A MESSAGE FROM J.J. HOLLIE

We are in the midst of a digital revolution that is drastically transforming the way we live, work and interact with the world around us – and it’s changing the way we do business, too. As the digital shift continues to unfold, creativity, innovation and new technologies will be essential to maintaining Greater Houston’s position as an economic leader. The Chamber will continue to bring together a wide variety of voices across industries, promote dialogue between them, and advance policies that support innovation, technological advances, job creation and growth in every industry. At this year’s Economic Outlook Conference on February 21 at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel & Convention Center, four Houston area CEOs will discuss how technology-based industries and businesses can create tremendous growth and opportunity for the region’s economy beyond oil and gas and health care.

As an organization whose mission is to advocate for business and economic development, The Chamber has a keen interest in knowing what is happening in government. But it goes deeper. The Chamber is made up of folks who live and work in the area. This is home; our members want to know who their elected officials are and where they stand on issues that affect us all. Ahead of the March Primary Election, The Chamber will host the 2020 Whistle Stop Tour on February 26 at The Lone Star College System Office to give community members a chance to hear directly from candidates running for office in Montgomery County. While The Chamber is not a political action committee, we sponsor candidate forums because we believe people have a right to know what their candidates for public office say about issues that affect our communities. We provide the forums as a public service, and we are privileged and proud to play a role in the democratic process. Learn more about The Whistle Stop Tour on page 9 and view the 2020 election calendar on pages 10-11.

Read more about the Economic Outlook Conference and the Innovation Panel on page 6.

30th Anniversary SCI://TECH Exposition ach summer, Education for Tomorrow Alliance partners with area businesses to offer local students career exploration opportunities. The Student Internship Program (SIP) provides two-week internships to more than 150 motivated 12th grade students each summer. Each student learns about the day-to-day experiences of a profession that interests him or her. Host companies offer career mentoring that help shape students’ career paths. Here is a sampling of what 2019 participants said about their internship experiences.

“Learning from the very people that I hope to be like one day left a big impression on me.” “I was interested in software engineering before, and now I am sure that I want to do it because of this experience!” “My capacity for compassion was broadened by a mile, as it was necessary to step into a child’s shoes in order to make a lesson plan that could truly fit their needs.” “My biggest takeaway would have to make the effort to establish a relationship with people. I did not want this internship to end because by the second week, I felt like a valuable employee going to work with people who love what they do.” Internships in a wide range of fields are needed, including business, law, marketing, and more. The greatest demand is for STEM internships. The program kicks off in June and can run for any two consecutive weeks until the end of July. To learn more or to sign up to host an intern, visit efta-us.org > Programs.
