Dear Friends, It’s no wonder that Valentine’s Day falls before the spring. First comes love, and then beautiful things bloom and are born from that love. This season is a time to celebrate that which connects us and binds us together. Our members know us best and are our most loyal friends, and in a spirit of love and gratitude for all of you, I’d like to share with you a little about what blooms, what’s born and what binds us at Woodland Park Zoo. When it comes to what’s born, it’s not just babies (although we do love our adorable zoo babies)! In our work for extraordinary animal wellness and wellbeing, ideas and innovation are born. From deep tissue massages for tapirs, to ultrasounds for pregnant gorillas and laser therapy to provide relief for an aging swan, we show we care by finding solutions to provide the best possible life to the animals at Woodland Park Zoo. With your support, we are also helping new generations of wildlife around the world through our investment in global conservation programs, like the penguins you’ll read about on page 10.

Then things bloom. For our beloved orangutans Batu and Godek, new affection is blooming. You can read more about that on page 20. Orangutans, like so many other species, rely on healthy habitats for their survival. The forests where they live have been largely destroyed for palm oil and other materials, but thanks to dedicated communities around the world who are planting trees and working tirelessly to bring back these vital ecosystems, new forests are blooming. Our hope for the future of orangutans blooms with it.

Finally, what binds us? We are bound together in our love for animals. In my experience, people who care about animals tend to also be people who are centered in empathy, and that empathy extends beyond animals to the greater world around us. We are bound in our shared commitment to uplifting our neighbors and community, to protecting and preserving our irreplaceable and incomparable Pacific Northwest and to creating a more sustainable earth for future generations.

We put our heart into all of the work described above, and your support is the heartbeat that helps it keep going. For 122 years, Woodland Park Zoo has loved being part of this community. ust in time for spring, our animal spotlight is shining on the zoo’s Savanna where we find a species known as the graceful “gymnasts” of east Africa’s grasslands: our Grant’s gazelles.

There are many species of small to medium-sized antelopes in Africa and Asia that are gazelles. Their lean and leggy stature makes them look a little like deer, but gazelles are actually bovines, which puts them in the same family as goats, cattle and sheep.

Grant’s gazelles and Thompson’s gazelles are among the most recognized of those that live in the grasslands of east Africa with the Grant’s being the larger of the two. They have great big lyre-shaped, ringed horns and a light brown coat that is white on the inside of their legs and on their belly. There is also a white stripe with a little black on their face and a white patch of fur on their rump. The biggest visual differences between the two species (other than size) are that the smaller Thompson’s have a very pronounced black stripe on their flanks (the area on their sides between the ribs and hips) and the white rump patch on the Thompson’s gazelle stops at the root of their tail. The Grant’s rump patch is larger and covers the region above their tail, too.

Gazelles are built for swiftness and agility. After all, they are on the menu for many carnivorous (meat-eating) predators that share their habitat, like

lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas—so that kind of speed is a survival strategy. Since many sets of eyes make for a better early warning system, Grant’s gazelles tend to migrate in herds that can range anywhere from 10 to 200 individuals. And in locations where their habitats overlap, they can sometimes be seen mixing with Thompson’s gazelles, zebras, giraffes and other herbivores (plant-eaters) of the grasslands.

Our herd of Grant’s gazelle at Woodland Park Zoo is made up of five leggy ladies—all of them related. Buttercup, Bubbles and Blossom are 2 years old—and yes indeed, they were named after the Powerpuff Girls. Older siblings Spirit and Hoser are 7. They all have their own preferences and mannerisms—but the one whose personality really shines is Buttercup. Her animal keepers say that she has a very bold and sassy temperament, and is the “social butterfly” of the group. When the animal keepers are out on the Savanna, Buttercup loves running around to get their attention.

Sometimes she does a kind of four-legged bounce or jump— called a pronk or a stot—alongside of them. Gazelles are known for this special kind of gait.

At mealtime our girls get to dine on a variety of hay, alfalfa, apples, carrots, romaine, beet pulp and a special kind of biscuit made for leaf-eaters. Buttercup particularly likes the biscuits and romaine, but her favorite treat (on the menu

when it’s in season) is roses! So next time you visit the zoo, if you see one of our gazelles out on the savanna nibbling on flowers, it might be her. She’s the one who knows that a rose by any other name is … delicious!

• Grant’s gazelles are more browsers than grazers, meaning they eat more leaves and stems than grasses—but given the opportunity they’ll do both.

• They can go for long periods without water. It’s a survival strategy for the dry savanna, plus it allows them to avoid predators that hunt at watering holes.

• That ability to go without water offers another advantage too. While Thompson’s gazelles, zebras and wildebeest leave dry areas to find water, Grant’s gazelles can migrate in the opposite direction, reducing competition for food.

FOCUS ON CONSERVATION

P

unta San Juan Program (PSJ) is one of Woodland Park Zoo’s wildlife conservation partners, Punta San Juan is a marine preserve located in the rugged cliffs on the southwest coast of Peru. This is where your membership helps to support a team of researchers who are securing a future for vulnerable Humboldt penguins—the species we care for at the zoo—and all the wildlife that share its ecosystem.

Humboldt penguins are currently listed as a Threatened Species, vulnerable to extinction. They are one of the four species of “banded” penguins—so called for the horseshoe shaped black band or stripe that runs around the front of their bodies and across their chest. And unlike the cold-weather Antarctic penguins that many people are familiar with, banded penguins like the Humboldt are adapted to life in more temperate climates.

Nearly half of Peru’s entire Humboldt penguin population calls PSJ home. This unique ecosystem—where the continental shelf meets the coastline—creates an upswelling of cold nutrient-rich waters, known as the Humboldt current, where fish species such as sardines and anchovies can thrive. This fertile environment makes PSJ an important breeding site for many birds like cormorants, terns, pelicans and boobies. The excrement from all these birds— known as guano—provides a soft substrate that the penguins use to dig their nesting burrows and raise their chicks. The reserve is home to large populations of marine mammals too, like South American fur seals and sea lions.

THE WHY

The delicate balance of this PSJ ecosystem is under threat by land and by sea. On land, the guano that Humboldt penguins need for nesting is also a resource for agriculture. It is a highly sought-after form of crop fertilizer and is being harvested at unsustainable rates.

There are threats in the sea too.

Peru’s fishing industry is largely unregulated, so overfishing has decimated populations of anchovies and sardines— staples of the Humboldt penguins’ diet.

Penguins, other sea birds, and marine mammals are also at risk of entanglement in discarded fishing nets and plastic waste.

Climate change is also affecting the Humboldt current that gives life to PSJ. This entire ecosystem is susceptible to the influences of El Niño events, which can cause extreme food shortages for all the wildlife there. That can lead to starvation for Humboldt penguins and other marine animals.

GUINS UNTA SAN JUAN THE HOW and recent highlights

Researchers and rangers at PSJ are working hard to lessen the severity of these threats, even though Covid pandemic-related setbacks have limited their access to the marine reserve. The team maintains and repairs the wall surrounding the reserve that protects it from illegal hunting and guano harvesting and keeps out predators, like the Andean fox. The team also catches and removes smaller predators like rats, which are a big threat to protected seabird eggs and chicks.

PSJ staff monitor the health of the penguins as well as the environmental variables— like temperatures and water currents—that affect the ecosystem. The most recent data shows that population declines for Humboldt penguins and Peruvian fur seals were slowing—a sign that their 2020 numbers were stable.

The results of ongoing PSJ research were published in four different scientific journals in 2020—and there are more being prepared for future publication.

The PSJ team works with local communities too, to win support for and create positive feelings about conservation. When Covid prevented in-person meetings this past year, the PSJ staff found creative ways to continue their outreach by hosting live talks via Facebook.

ooking into the eyes of a tiger reminds us of our very humanity. For most of us, seeing a big cat this close is best done via the lens of a camera of course. What emotions and feelings this image stirs in you probably depends on your mood, but very likely you are reminded that the world is full of creatures who see the world from a different perspective than your own. When you boil it down, the practice of empathy is love—a behavior we learn from an early age to better connect with those around us. Woodland Park Zoo is excited to announce a new partnership program, Building Conservation Identity through Youth Mentoring, in collaboration with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound!

Made possible in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Woodland Park Zoo and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound will join efforts to engage King County youth in conservation action and environmental learning.

competitions on conservation themes, this dynamic programming will help foster lifelong connections to the environment. Every step of the way, adult mentors will help support and reinforce youths’ learning and personal growth.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound creates and supports one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

Over the next two years, up to 75 mentor and mentee pairs of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound will participate in monthly opportunities developed in partnership with Woodland Park Zoo that strengthen their relationships to each other, to the local environment and to their own conservation identity. From “EnvironMentoring” lessons covering topics such as native species and conservation-related careers, to service events restoring local green spaces, to friendly

Younger generations represent our future scientists, stewards, and policymakers and play a critical role in creating positive social and environmental change.

By merging Woodland Park Zoo’s expertise in conservation education with Big Brothers Big Sisters' expertise in supportive, caring, one-to-one mentoring relationships, Building Conservation Identity through Youth Mentoring will encourage youth to get outdoors, interact with nature and take conservation action. This exciting new program is just one of many ways that Woodland Park Zoo is living our mission to save wildlife and inspire everyone to make conversation a priority in their lives.

ave you seen Godek and Batu on the Trail of Vines? The young orangutans are now living together after being introduced earlier in summer 2021.

The Orangutan Species Survival Plan identified Batu as a future breeding mate for Godek, our 12-year-old, male Sumatran orangutan who has lived at the zoo since 2017. Batu, also 12, arrived in May from Philadelphia Zoo. Species Survival Plans are conservation breeding programs across accredited zoos to help ensure healthy, self-sustaining populations of threatened and endangered species.

While Godek showed interest in Batu, she was tentative at first.

After thoughtful introductions, animal keepers looked to Batu to tell them when she was ready for more time with Godek; the two are now quite smitten. Batu is described by her animal keepers as confident, inquisitive and playful. “Batu means ‘rock’ in Malay, and she is going to be that to us here at Woodland Park Zoo as we begin our new foundation of a Sumatran breeding program for future generations,” says orangutan keeper Carolyn Sellar.
