Battlefields Trip
Author, Dina Nayeri Visits WGS
We welcomed Dina Nayeri, a former refugee and now award-winning author, to the Grove. She gave students in Years 7 to 12 an insight into her amazing story of survival, determination, and eventually, happiness when she was forced to flee Iran with her mother aged only 10 years old. Students heard how she adapted to her new life in the United States and ended up graduating from Princeton University.
Some of our boarders enjoyed the Year 9 school trip to World War 1 Battlefield sites in Northern France and Belgium over the Easter break. They encountered thought provoking visits to cemeteries, trenches and museums, as well as visit to Bruges and, of course, the chocolate shop in Ypres! Two of our students laid a wreath on behalf of the school at the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate.

Maths Day Out
12 of our Year 12 students attended the University of Leeds KS5 Maths Day which gave the students an insight into studying maths at university. They enjoyed a campus tour, a talk on studying maths at Leeds, some hands on maths activities and a W. P. Milne lecture entitled "How often do curves

The nephew of former Headmaster, Clifford Towlson, visited the Grove this term. Chris Towlson was evacuated to Woodhouse Grove to avoid the Blitz in London from 1943-44. He fondly remembered the long driveway as well as the mound and the cricket pitch where he learned to play cricket. It was wonderful for him to share these memories with current members of Towlson House.

Barcelona Football Tour
During the Easter break, 43 students from Years 9 and 10, including three boarders, travelled to Spain for the junior football tour. The group was split into 3 teams, with each team playing two fixtures against local Spanish opposition, as well as playing in a tournament against other UK touring schools. The touring party also spent time in Barcelona, had a tour of the Nou Camp and spent a day at a theme park.

13. Ned was awarded England Man of the Match for his performance against France in the U18 Six Nations rugby festival. He also scored a try against Ireland and has just signed a professional contract to play rugby league for Leeds Rhinos.
Post-18 Careers Evening
It was fantastic to see so many of our Year 12 students and their families at our Post-18 launch event on Tuesday night. A combination of talks and exhibitor stalls allowed them to explore their choices post Woodhouse Grove, and to make more informed decisions regarding their future. Thank you to all our exhibitors for attending. It was particularly pleasing to speak to Old Grovians who have been through a range of different routes and shared their experiences with our current students.
LEAP Student Business Awards
At the LEAP Annual Awards Ceremony in April, The Canine Confectionery Company (our student team made up of students from years 10, 11 and 12) won 2nd prize for the Award for Innovation. A great effort that demonstrated good business skills and excellent teamwork.
