Spanish Board: AQA What will I study?

How will I be assessed?

The A‐level course aims to develop the ability to use Spanish for the pur‐ pose of prac cal communica on, whether in speech or in wri ng. It also provides an insight into the structure of the language and into the culture of the Spanish‐speaking world.

Paper 1: 2 hours 30 minutes: Exam tes ng listening, reading and transla on skills. 40% of the A‐level grade.

Students will study a wide variety of material in Spanish, including magazine ar cles, television programmes, songs, films and literature.

How does it work? Lessons are delivered as much as possible in Spanish, but not exclusively. Discussion, individual research, film and literature, gramma cal exercises, listening, transla on and essay work are all undertaken and students work regularly either individually, in pairs or in small groups with the Spanish assistant. Students have regular access to the language lab and to digi‐ tal online resources. A visit to a Spanish‐speaking country is advisable but not compulsory. We are happy to help to arrange such visits if needed.

Paper 2: 2 hours: Exam. 2 essays in Spanish, on books/films studied during the course. 30% of the A‐level grade. Paper 3: 16‐18 minutes: A speaking test, comprising discussion of a s mulus card and of an individual research project carried out by the student. 30% of the A‐level grade. Students will have the op on of taking AS Spanish at the end of the two year course as an alterna ve to the full A‐level.

Why Spanish? Spanish links well with other languages, English, history, poli cs, business studies and economics. It is useful for students wishing to study law and business‐ orientated subjects (e.g. marke ng/ events, management, tourism, economics), European history and English. Spanish can be studied on its own at university or with other languages. Increasing numbers of our students are choosing to combine their language with another subject on a combined degree course. A degree in Spanish can lead to a wide variety of careers, including interna onal business, marke ng, interpre ng and teaching. 33
