Year 12 Activity Day

Last Friday, Year 12 braved the rainy weather for their Activity Day. They took part in many different team activities from tug of war to 'who can build the most useful object out of Lego'. It was a really fun day for everyone involved and it was great to see all of the groups getting stuck into the games and activities.

Sixth Form Talks

Last Tuesday, Old Grovian Josh Binns came into school to talk to the current Sixth Form physicists about his engineering course, time at university and work experience. Last Thursday, our business and economics students were invited to join a live and interactive webinar in which the critical issue of Food Supply & Inflation was discussed. This was a great opportunity for our students to experience how academics think about and debate pressing and complex issues.

Library Inductions

Year 7 have been getting to grips with the Library through induction sessions with Librarian Mrs Pinkney.

Alton Towers Boarding Trip

PSHEE Towers

Year 9 have been building communication towers out of marshmallows and spaghetti in PSHEE.

Last Saturday The boarding community visited Alton Towers with 6 members of staff. It was an early 6.45am wake up, but definitely worth it as they all loved the activities and rides at the park!

STEM Club

Students in STEM club engineered a game to test their hand eye coordination, it required a knowledge of circuits and team work! They also had to create a name for their game, examples included 'EGFA', and 'cool course'.

Poetry By Heart Competition

After being awarded the title of staff National Champion in the summer, Mrs Sharpe was invited to perform at The Globe theatre to launch next year's Poetry By Heart competition. It was a fabulous experience which included reciting her winning poem, 'Passing the Time' by, Caroline Bird, being interviewed for the competition's promotional video and meeting the poet Daljit Nagra. It was a joyous day of celebrating poetry.

Biology Trip

Year 13 biologists had a great 3 days on their field trip to Cranedale over the weekend. They spent time taking samples of Becks as well as Filey Brigg and humanely caught animals such as moths, bugs and rodents. It was a wonderful 3 days with lots of field work accomplished.

DT Lessons

Year 12 D&T students visited chapel yesterday, where we currently have the art pieces 'Stations of the Cross' by Frank Roper on loan. Students have been looking at the sand casting process and it was great to be able to discuss how the Roper used this method in his work.

National Poetry Day

Thursday was National Poetry Day. This poem was written for the day by Lily Edwards, the Grove Poet Laureate. The competition to become the 22/23 Grove Poet Laureate is now underway. To find out more about it, please click HERE.

MFL Club

Year 8 Pupils researched artists from France, Germany and Spain this week in MFL club. They delivered confident and engaging presentations on Goya and Frida Kahlo.

Fencing

Year 9 and 10 fencers competed at the Northern Youth League Fencing Tournament, Harrogate, last Sunday. All 11 athletes fenced really well, with some winning medals. The next tournament is in November, where they hope to take some of our new Year 7 and Sixth Form fencers.

Triathlon Trials

Congratulations to Oliver Goodison Y10 and Eilidh Molloy Y11 who both tried out for the Yorkshire Triathlon Academy. Oliver is now on the British Triathlon performance pathway and Eilidh has moved up into the next stage of the pathway, the Academy.

Netball

Badminton Trials

Following the recent Yorkshire badminton team trial weekends, congratulations to Alex Steel Year 8, for being chosen for the U14 Yorkshire 1st team and Thomas Steel Year 12, for being selected for the U18 2nd team. Thomas had his first U18 training session last week and Alex had his first U14 match last weekend vs Yorkshire 2.

Cross Country

Last Saturday was the first round of the Leeds Schools Cross Country League over at Middleton Park, South Leeds. A massive well done to Charley Clark Taylor Year 9, who won her race and Jacob Best Year 10, who came second in his. It was great to have both Brontë House and Woodhouse Grove all together, cheering each other on.

Well done to Jessica Strudwick Y11 who was successful at gaining a place in the U17 Welsh National Academy last weekend. She will attend monthly training in Cardiff with the hope of making the squad for the U17 Netball Europe Competition in February. Congratulations to the following Y8 netballers who have successfully gained a spot in the U13 West Yorkshire County Performance Squad, Taylor Crowther, Georgie Cothliff, Bella Strudwick and Abi Stirk.

Mini Marathon

Congratulations to Archie Peaker Y10 and Maisey Bellwood Y10 on a great run in the London Mini Marathon. Maisey finished 17th in her race and a 31st place finish (1st home for the Yorkshire and Humberside team) for Archie hopefully means he has done enough to get invited back in April.

School Sustainability

We have donated approximately 30 bags of bed linens to Wharfedale Refugee Response; they will be handed out to asylum seeker families in Bradford.

Boarders were treated to an apple crumble pudding one evening last week from apples picked on the school grounds.

546 Solar panels have been installed on the sport hall roof. They will generate 184,809kWh of energy in the first year powering 10-15% of the school site. This will have a significant impact carbon footprint.
