Maths Day Out
Last week, 12 of our Year 12 students attended the University of Leeds KS5 Maths Day which gave the students an insight into studying maths at university. They enjoyed a campus tour, a talk on studying maths at Leeds, some hands on maths activities and a W. P. Milne lecture entitled "How often do curves meet?". It was a thoroughly enjoyable day, and hopefully we have some more

Tech Club is Back
We are so glad to welcome Mr Sunley, our new Performing Arts Technician, who has already re-launched Junior and Senior Tech Club with great success! Earlier last week, Senior Tech Club were mastering new lighting techniques in The McCarthy Theatre. Junior Tech Club were perfecting their prop design skills - making and then painting the roses red in preparation for our outdoor production of Alice in Wonderland, later this term. We look forward to seeing what these budding technicians will create next!
We had a visit from Chris Towlson, nephew of former HM Clifford Towlson this week. Chris was evacuated to WGS to avoid the Blitz in London from 1943-44 and hadn't been back since. He remembered the driveway past the HM house as well as the mound and the cricket pitch. He had an older sister who forbade him from climbing trees, but he remembers doing so! He said that he learned to play cricket here with the pupils - it was wonderful to have him with us. The photo below shows him with members of Towlson House.

Individual Sport Success
Well done to Rafe McCormack, Year 9, who recently played for the England U15’s football team on their recent trip to Spain. It was a fantastic experience, the team managed a draw against the US, a win against Japan and a 2-1 loss against the eventual winners Spain. He was also part of the U15 Manchester United team who won their match against Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 last Saturday.

Congratulations to Kira Grahamslaw, Year 11, who recently competed in the British Fencing Youth Championships. She received a bronze medal in Epee and finished 7th in her second weapon. These two top 8 finishes means Kira will automatically qualifyfor next year’s event.

Eco Committee’s Wild Garlic Find

The Eco Committee ventured out to the Mound to collect wild garlic, which was then delivered to the catering team, who used it to make garlic-infused olive oil. Some teaching staff also benefited from the Committee's foraging, taking leaves home to make pesto. The Eco Committee hopes to complete more projects with a focus on sustainability in the coming months.
Biology Olympiad
Before Easter, two of our Year 13s took part in the Royal Society of Biology Olympiad. Lizzie, achieved a gold award which means that she came in the top 5% of the 13,000 entrants who were the most able of their cohorts. They have both shown a breadth of biology knowledge and skill.

Dina Nayeri Visits WGS
Last week we were privileged to welcome Dina Nayeri, a former refugee and now award-winning author, to the Grove. She engaged students in Years 7 to 12 with her amazing story of survival, determination, and happiness. Dina was forced to flee Iran with her mother and younger brother and eventually made it to Oklahoma. Students heard how as a scared 10-year-old she adapted to her new life and ended up graduating from Princeton, a top University in the US. Each student was given a copy of her book ‘The Waiting Place’, funded by the University of St Andrew's project. If you want to know more please contact Mr Lambert or searchonline for Dina Nayeri.
Sixth Form Mentors
The younger students interviewed Sixth Form students about their experiences in Sixth Form and their time at the Grove. There were some excellent discussions, and it was great to see the engagement between the students.

Green Grove Update
“The 600 tree saplings of different varieties planted on the riverbank are doing well, we are pleased to report. The recently established willow copse near the cricket pavilion has so far shown a 98.5% success rate! And to date there is no sign of the Himalayan Balsam on the riverbank. Our riverbank and school need your help with this brilliant project. If you can assist, please speak to Mr Lambert.” Update written by Grace Huntington and Adam Bashir, Year 10.
