Christmas Charity Giving
We are thrilled that the 2022 Christmas Eve Christingle raised over £200 for this year’s school charities, EduKid and Candlelighters. Thank you to everyone who donated, it was a lovely evening service. Thank you to all involved as well as everyone that came to the numerous other services over the Christmas period.
Getting Down to Business
There were high levels of concentration as students were 'learning by doing' in business studies yesterday. They are learning how to calculate costs, revenues and profit! A great way to apply maths in a practical way, developing skills for the future.
Breaktime Concert
There were many staff and pupils watching this week’s Breaktime Concert, which takes place on Wednesday in the Recital Room. The audience were treated to some lovely piano recitals, including an impressive off the cuff performance by Seth Bird, Y7.
Biology Lessons
In biology, Year 9 have been using modelling clay to show the effect of high temperatures on enzymes, leading to the enzymes becoming denatured and no longer able to work.
Charlie Waller Trust Talk
Philosophy Club
In Junior philosophy club this week they discussed the idea of a soul. Debates centered around if humans and animals indeed have souls and if so what would this mean for animal rights.
Philosophy club is an opportunity for Year 7 and 8 students to be introduced to and discuss a wide range of philosophical ideas. It takes place every Thursday lunchtime.
On the 25th and 26th of January the Charlie Waller Trust is coming to school. They focus their talks on mental health for children and young people. On the 25th there will be an evening session for parents. If you would like to come along to this free session please reserve a place on TicketSource by clicking HERE. The following day Years 10-13 will have talks from the Trust, with the aim of giving students the confidence and skills to look after their mental health.

Rugby Academy Representation
Congratulations to Alfie Longstaff, Ned McCormack, Louis Worrall, Archie Hurford and Will Wood (Years 11 and 12) who represented Yorkshire Academy in a friendly against Bristol Bears at Loughborough University recently. Some of the boys will be playing again against Leicester Tigers this Saturday.
Rhinos
Netball Representation
Well done to Summer Anderson, Y12, and Grace Ross, Y11, who both represented Leeds Rhinos U17s at the weekend in a match against Surrey Storm. Both girls turned out a great performance and the match resulted in Rhinos winning 48-45. Grace was player of the match.
Fencing News
Cross Country Success
Congratulations to Archie Peaker, Y10, who has become the U15 Boys Champion and Maisey Bellwood, Y10, who took U15 Girls Silver in the Yorkshire cross-country club Championships. Maisey and Archie also picked up the Gold and Silver team medals respectively. Seven pupils competed for their local clubs in a typically muddy course with stream crossings at Lightwater Valley. Simeon Tedd 17th and Macie Donaldson 19th were the next best positions on a tough day of high-class racing.
Last week Kira Grahamslaw, Y11, competed in a British Ranking Fencing Competition. Kira came third - her first ever podium position at a cadet ranking competition. This has pushed her GB ranking up to 13. What a great achievement, well done, Kira!
This week there was a great turnout at Year 7 fencing training. Many thanks to the kind Year 10s who came along to help as part of their DoE award.
Football Festival
On Saturday WGS hosted the inaugural Woodhouse Grove 6-a-side festival. Thank you to all the schools who made it a fantastic day, and in particular well done to both WGS teams that played. A great way to kick off the football season.
Badminton Win
Alex Steel, Year 8, and the Yorkshire U14 1st team had another successful county badminton match last Sunday, beating Lancashire 19 games to 1. This latest win puts Yorkshire at the top of the English county rankings with one match left in February against Cheshire before the county finals weekend in May.

Performing Arts Calendar

Visitor in Chapel
This Thursday we had a visitor from the Methodist Independent Schools Trust in school for the day. Our visitor and the Headmaster joined the Year 7 and 8’s in their Chapel assembly. All year groups attend Chapel once a week for a 'thought of the day', Bible reading, a prayer and a song led by Rev. Drost.
Junior Librarian Duties
This year’s new Junior librarians have been hard at work recently learning all there is to know about correct library management. There is also a new display of dyslexia friendly books in the Library that students can check out.

Child Safety and the Metaverse
To help you understand this new, fast changing issue the NSPCC has published a guide to both the Metaverse and Virtual Reality headsets. Understanding the Playground - Fortnite Fortnite remains a popular game and there are a number of risks associated with it. Internetmatters.org has published a guide to understanding the game, safety issues and the terms used.

The SWGfL has published a pamphlet on how to best keep safe whilst using online software and games.
Riverbank Project Update
Student after school sessions are planned to start after half term, when we will look at controlling weeds generally, and more specifically around each sapling to give them the best chance to grow and flourish.
We will be asking for further community help on selected Sunday afternoons between now and the end of the Spring Term.
There is also the potential for an exciting follow-on green project.
