Trips and Tours Half Term

24 of our Sixth Form girls headed off to Barbados and St Lucia on Tuesday, arriving safely, before a great training session, a dip in the sea and some relaxation by the pool. Their first games were at sun set - 1st VII won 32-28 and the 2nds lost 25-20. Thanks to our kit sponsors jwhtanks.

47 students and 5 staff headed off to Iceland this morning on their 'Awe and Wonder' trip.

They'll be exploring the incredible physical and human geographical features while soaking in Icelandic culture. With the recent volcanic activity and a chance to see the Northern Lights, this trip is sure to be unforgettable!

We hope all our tourists enjoy their trip and make memories for life.

Youth Mental Health Training

Earlier in the week, 10 staff members, two governors and 19 volunteers, from Years 12 and 13, successfully completed their Youth Mental Health First Aid training. This training equips them with valuable skills to support the well-being of young people and shows our strong commitment to fostering a supportive and mentally healthy school environment. The session was expertly led by Debbie Spens from the Charlie Waller Foundation, an organisation dedicated to promoting mental health awareness and resilience.

ParentalSupervision - HowFarisTooFar?

Many parents will opt to use apps to track and monitor the location and online activities of their children. These apps can be really beneficial (e.g. physical safety) but as with nything there are drawbacks (e.g. invasion of privacy).

ForParents - CyberSecurity

From financial scams, identity theft, using public WiFi and much more, cyber security is fundamental to all of our lives. Internet Matters have put together a number of articles and resources for parents and their children which go into these topics including: creating secure accounts, digital piracy and phishing and ransomware. My Family's Digital Toolkit

There are many excellent resources for parents about how to help keeping children safe online.

Chicago—Senior Production

Tickets are now available for our Senior School production ‘Chicago - Teen Edition’ on Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 December.

Student Librarians

Our Student Librarians have been busy helping with organising shelves and making the library look a bit neater! Miss Winks is recruiting more Student Librarians from Years 7 and 8. Duties include shelving fiction & non-fiction books, helping with library displays, helping to issue and return resources…and you get yourself a Librarian badge to wear on your blazer!!

Sports’ Presenter Q&A

We were thrilled to welcome back former pupil Becky Ives, now a well-known face in sports media with TNT Sports. Becky shared her inspiring journey from Woodhouse Grove student to sports presenter, showing how diverse careers in sport can be. Our Sixth Formers and Year 10s were lucky to hear her insights and ask great questions. This is the first in anew initiative—bringing in guest speakers each term to broaden our students' horizons about careers in sport.

Grove Awards

Five students were awarded their Grove Awards for activities completed last year. Sam T, Darcey B and Ruby B received awards for their Year 7 challenges, whilst Gabriella H and Isabelle H got their awards for Year 8. Around the Classrooms

STEM Club & Science

Y8 & 9 STEM club have been busy. They made some chemistry lava lamps and investigated the effect of warming the oil up and cooling it down. Then they went outside to sample the worm population. Soapy water poured onto soil within a quadrat encouraged the worms underneath to come up to the surface so they could be counted and measured. Woodhouse Worm facts from the data:

Average number of worms per quadrat found was 23.75 worms and the average length was 7cm. If the school site is approximately 70acres, that makes approximately 27 million worms at Woodhouse Grove, with a total combined length of 1,890 Km!

Year 10 scientists have been making ionic lattice structure to help them to understand the properties of ionic compounds.

Year 8 Philosophy Club

Philosophers from Year 8 discussed wisdom; what it means to be wise, how we acquire wisdom and at what age we are at our most wise. Students were really interested on whether we are born with knowledge or is knowledge gained through experience.

D&T News

A busy term in D&T. Year 12 enjoyed an interesting visit to TF Automation as part of Bradford Manufacturing Week and made bottle rockets on their Sixth Form experience day.

Languages

Year 13 Spanish students took part in a Channel Talent super-curriculum event listening to presentations from university lecturers on the Argentine Dictatorship and on the music of resistance in Chile. Students experienced university-style presentations which are relevant to their A-level curriculum.

Meanwhile, Year 10 students are playing Pictionary in German to develop their speaking skills. Describing photos is an assessed part of their speaking exam.

Geography

Year 9 have been getting to grips with global atmospheric circulation as part of their ecosystems topic. They recreated what they could remember using whiteboard pens.

Sporting Success

Congratulations to Matthew R, Year 13 has qualified for the North East regional swimming competition in Sheffield next month, qualifiying for races in all 4 strokes. Noah S, Year 12, won the Precision Rifle Series U.K. Top Junior 2024 last weekend, and has been invited to a selection shooting for Team GB Juniors for the World PR22 Championships in 2025 this weekend.

and U13 boys will play Denstone College.

Swimming

Well done to all of the 35 swimmers who swam in the first gala of the year against Ripon Grammar, a close fixture resulting in a narrow loss.

U23 fencing team following a strong performance in Geneva recently.

Rugby Roundup

In a block fixture against GSAL we recorded wins for U15s and U14sA and B. A very tight game for our 1st XV resulted in a 31-33 loss.

Unfortunately our U15s lost to Hymers in their cup game but are looking forward to the Langley Rugby Festival this weekend.

6 convincing wins out of 6 in our recent fixtures against Harrogate Grammar School, and a further 5 out of 5 wins against Dame Allan’s for our U12 to U16 teams.

Cross Country

Congratulations to all 200 runners who took part in House Cross Country. Results; 1st Vinter, 2nd Atkinson and 3rd Findlay.

Boarding News

This half-term has certainly been an eventful one in boarding. Activities have included It’s a Knockout and Pumpkin Picking, bowling trips, Friday Night Lights, and forging new friendships while strengthening old ones.
