Candlelighters Fundraising

A Candlelighters representative came into school last week to thank us for raising over £5000 during the summer term with our combined school marathon. We couldn't have done it without the unwavering support of families and friends.

Pre Nursery have been enjoying the garden and outdoor play. They have been playing with the parachute, colouring pictures and turning cardboards boxes into cars!

Reception have been learning about Chinese New Year. They watched a clip of a dragon dance and then created their own. They played some Chinese music and moved

Year 1 have started their new ICT unit 'Lego Builders'. They thought about the importance of following instructions and learnt a new word, algorithm. They partnered up, back to-back, and gave instructions to each other to build a lego model - some explanations were very clear resulting in identical models, whilst some were less clear!

Year 2 have been shopping and learning how to total money by putting the largest value coins first. In Science they have been investigating the properties of materials. Two experiments were conducted, with methods and results to find out which ball is the bounciest and which fabric is the stretchiest.

Year 1 enjoyed their trip to Cartwright Hall this week. They have been learning about L.S.Lowry and saw one of his paintings, built their own 3D model, looked at artefacts from the past and created a Lowry inspired picture.

Year 2’s art topic introduced them to the artist Claude Monet and Impressionism. They used acrylic paints and their fingers to create paintings of Monet's garden.

Year 2 were given a challenge to learn the first 2 verses of the poem 'The Owl and the Pussycat' by Edward Lear as part of their PSHEE unit 'Dreams and Goals'. They had to think about the ladder of success, what steps to take to achieve their goal. They then worked together to learn the poem and perform it to the class. Year 2 have been carefully studying their reading text The Dragonsitter to look for and highlight evidence of how the characters are feeling in the story. Mum is not too happy with the naughty dragon!

In art, Year 3 have been busy designing mosaics on squared paper and digital software in preparation for making a stone mosaic coaster linking with their topic ‘The Romans’.

In PSHEE, Year 3 are developing teamwork skills. They solved a jigsaw puzzle to make a team of four and then started work on designing a garden. They agreed and assigned roles, created a unique design and planned out the steps to achieve their goal.

In Year 4 Art and Design, the children have been studying the fascinating art and culture of India by exploring and recreating beautiful Mehndi Designs, with sparkling results.

Year 3 and 4 rehearsals have begun for their upcoming performance of 'What's the Crime Mr. Wolf?'

The story is set in Fabletown's Forest Courtroom. Mr Wolf has been arrested to answer charges of impersonating an old lady, terrorising Red Riding Hood and vandalising the houses of the three pigs. The prosecutors, call a range of characters to give evidence, but are the well-known characters of fairy-tale just what they seem?

Year 4 constructed a series of electrical circuits this week. They thoroughly enjoyed making a lot of noise when they all managed to make their buzzers work simultaneously.

This week in Year 5 RE, the children have been learning about famous saints and researching interesting facts about the Patron Saint of Ireland 'Saint Patrick'. They learned about the symbols and traditions associated with him.

This week, year 4 tackled division with and without a remainder, using the bus stop method, which is the formal method of dividing numbers. The children used lots of maths equipment to help them work out the answers. Even though some found it quite challenging, they were committed and resilient. True Grovians!

Year 5 had great fun working against the clock in the ‘Escape Room’ challenge. They searched for hidden clues around the classroom to solve puzzles based on the materials topic they have been studying in science. You’ll be reassured to know that they all managed to escape and no one was locked in!

Mathematicians in Year 5 have been using ICT to help them work out where six-digit and decimal numbers are located on number lines and grids.

In maths, Year 6 used the Seesaw tools to demonstrate their understanding of 7-digit numbers. In science, they put their electrical circuit knowledge to the test. Some of the staff and children were invited to answer a variety of quiz questions ranging from super
