Safer Internet Day

An assembly from Mrs Ellershaw and our Online Safety Ambassadors kick-started Internet Safety Week. The theme this year is ’making space for conversations about children's life online’. The children also completed some activities in ICT lessons.

Our Year 6 ambassadors also talked to our Reception pupils about internet safety and made sure they know to tell adults what they are using the internet for.

We would like to share a few tips and resources that you may find useful when having conversations about online safety:

1. Start early - Ideally, start talking to your child about online safety as soon as they are accessing internet-enabled devices - it’s never too early! This will normalise such conversations as well as reinforce important messages.

2. Be open and interested - Ask your child to show and tell you what they do online. What apps, games and sites do they access? How do they use these e.g. do they speak/ interact with others? Appreciate the opportunities and benefits, as well as help your child to understand any risks. This will create a positive and open climate so that your child is more likely to talk to you if something goes wrong.

3. Make it regular - Create regular opportunities for conversation so that you keep up to date with your child’s online activity, perhaps during a short car journey or on a walk.

4. Be a good role model - Remember that your child will see you using devices and so it's important that we try to practice what we preach!

5. Seek help - If during a conversation your child tells you something of concern, stay calm and reassure them. Speak to any of the safeguarding team for advice or use the resources below for support.

National Online Safety – the school has a subscription to National Online Safety. Their service has a huge array of resources to help parents understand many aspects of online safety. Please find below the URL you need to visit to register your account. You will need to complete your details and select “I am a: Parent/Carer” from the dropdown:

Nursery had a very exciting visit from the fire service! They learned all about what firefighters do, tried on some uniform and even used the equipment!

Year 1 have been busy planning their story in preparation for independent writing. They have been inspired by our class story, The Lion Inside, and chose their own small animal who befriends a large African animal.

Reception have been weaving animals. They used strips of paper and an animal template to create their weaving work.

Year 1 enjoyed carrying out scientific tests on different materials. They were testing whether they were transparent, absorbent, bendy or waterproof. The children made lots of interesting predictions and were fascinated that paper was actually absorbent but not as absorbent as a paper towel.

KS1 Sign Language Club

the British Sign Language alphabet. They had to sign a word to each other and try and guess the word. They were not allowed to speak though so they had to work out how to indicate which word they thought was being signed.

Last week Year 2 were investigating 3D shapes. They have been looking at the faces, edges and vertices.

Year 2 enjoyed their Florence Nightingale workshop at the Thackray Medical Museum. They went back in time to be nurses and porters at Scutari hospital and explored a Victorian street.

Art Spotlight

In Year 4 Art, the children explored the Indian block-printing technique and made block prints using cardboard and string to print colourful patterns onto fabric.

In Year 6 Art and Design, the children have been studying the work of Japanese painter and printmaker 'Hokusai'. They designed and made their own wave prints taking inspiration from his most famous work 'The Great Wave Off Kanagawa'.

In Geography Year 3 have been learning about human geography. Each group was tasked to make a presentation on the human geography of a different Italian city, which was then presented to the class.

A protractor, a sharp pencil and a good deal of concentration was needed in Year 4 this week to draw a variety of different angles. We are pleased to report a great DEGREE of success!
