Year 4 Respect Assembly

We saw an AMAZING assembly from Year 4 this week, on the subject of respect, one of our Grovian values. Our superheroes, The Respectables, reminded us of the need for respect in all that we do. This fab rap was written by one of our fantastic Y4 staff.

HMC Sport

Our footballers and netballers were in action this week at the HMC competition. Our U11 football team won the HMC bowl trophy and our netball A team came 5th in the cup with the B team joint 2nd in the bowl. Well done everyone.

Sixth Form Visit to Ashdown Lodge

Woodhouse Grove Sixth Form students visited Pre-Nursery and Nursery pupils this week as part of their A-level studies work. The students observed and interacted with the children to enable them to evaluate different theories on language acquisition. Our Ashdowners certainly enjoyed the extra attention!

In RE, Year 1 learned the story of The Lost Son and the lesson Jesus was trying to teach through this story. They then worked in groups to retell the story with puppets.

Buried Treasure

Reception had a surprise this week when they returned to their classroom to find a map of the school grounds along with a treasure map. They followed the clues and found a treasure chest and their new pathways book ‘The pirates are coming’. They wrote sentences about what they had found and then made treasure boxes. went on a walk looking for signs of spring and using the ipads to take photos.

In science, Year 2 have been investigating what is inside a seed. They peeled off the seed coat and used a magnifying glass to find the baby plant and the food store inside. They also planted seeds in different pots and predicted they needed soil, water, light and the right temperature to grow.

Year 2 have started their new class reader Owen and the Soldier. They enjoyed finding out about Owen, the main Character.

Year 2 have been using different strategies to halve 2 digit numbers, including using ten frames and partitioning. They also learned about arrays and how they can create repeated addition sentences from the arrays.

In science, Year 4 have been exploring the use of classification keys to introduce their new unitLivingThingsandtheirHabitats. The children were provided with a selection of images of biscuits and then sweets and were asked to produce a simple branching key by asking Yes/No questions that could split these items into groups.

Year 6 have been investigating shadows in their new 'Let it shine!' They enjoyed using some Indonesian shadow puppets to make shadows.

Club News

Year 5 took inspiration from the story 'Oi Cat' by Kes Gray and worked in teams to allocate items for various animals to sit on - the challenge was...they had to rhyme! They suggested; 'alpacas could sit on maracas', 'dingos could sit on flamingos' and 'ducks could sit on hooks'!

KS1 Gardening Club braved the rain this week to sow some tomatoes. Mr Lambert taught them a clever trick; planting seeds onto toilet roll with compost below so the tiny seeds do not get lost and are easier to space out. The toilet roll will then decompose.

Year 3 and 4 are really enjoying their new Games Club . This club was requested by our School Councillors after speaking to their classmates.

Using their maths skills, both Year 5 and Year 6 attempted to solve the mystery of who put treacle on the Trunchbull's chair using a series of challenging maths clues to eliminate suspects.

In Textiles Club last term, Year 3 and 4 finished painting their material with batik ink and sewed up their designs to make a pretty cushion. They look great!
