PRESS RELEASE

Woodbury University announces its 59th Annual Fashion Runway Benefit at the Alex Theatre in Burbank, CA May 6th , 2024

Woodbury University is thrilled to invite the public to its 59th Annual Fashion Runway Benefit, set to take place at the iconic Alex Theatre in Glendale, California, on May 9th at 7:00 PM. This highly anticipated event showcases our talented fashion design students as we present their creative and impressive collections, and witness the beginning of their professional careers. This year’s theme of Parallel Universes challenges these students to explore coexisting realms that mirror yet differ fundamentally from our own.

Tickets are $25 for General Admission and available for purchase on Ticketmaster, the Alex Theatre’s website, or on Woodbury University’s website. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Woodbury Fashion Design Program and student scholarships to enhance educational experiences for future fashion innovators.

Woodbury University will be honoring TJ Walker and Kevan Hall, two of the founders of The Black Design Collective. Black Design Collective is comprised of accomplished fashion industry professionals-of-color who seek to amplify the influence of and create opportunities for the community of Black apparel and accessory designers and costume designers within the US and abroad. The BDC mission is rooted in the promotion of Scholarship, Mentorship, and Entrepreneurship within emerging generations of Black fashion design talent. TJ Walker and Kevan Hall represent extraordinary careers and community outreach and are still involved in the fashion world with their own brand identities.

"Dear Senior Fashion Design Students: your creativity, devotion, and insights are all part of the Woodbury story that we have been writing since 1884," said Anna Leiker, Chair of the Fashion Design program at Woodbury University. "This event not only highlights their hard work and creativity but is also a celebration of the next generation of fashion leaders."

Woodbury University strives to bring the local community together by partnering with Nava College Preparatory Academy High School for this year’s runway benefit. The driving force behind this commitment makes a positive impact on students’ experience, supporting under-represented youth in the community.

Each Woodbury fashion design student partnered with two Nava students to create their prom wear, including a gown and a tuxedo look. Nava students will proudly wear their custom prom looks during this Fashion Runway event and to their high school prom the following week.

Founded in 1884, Woodbury University is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Southern California. “Fashion is an ever-changing medium. This year’s theme PARALLEL UNIVERSES, explores worlds conceived of as coexisting with and having certain similarities to the known world but different from it in some fundamental way. The creative act for fashion designers includes multiple approaches to any concept, always open to considering ideas that contradict each other a fundamental aspect of pure creativity. True creative success requires repetition, iteration, and critique, and this year’s theme reflects innovation and creativity in this way.

In search of words explaining the work of real talents and creative minds, you have inside access to where the designs speak for themselves. Enjoy learning who our students are, what inspires them and how they translate ideas of Parallel Universes into their wonderful designs. The fashion world has found a new orbit. We honor the work of our talented fashion design students, supported by our equally hardworking faculty and staff.

Thank you, our Fashion Design Faculty and the entire Woodbury community, for enabling students to continue their dreams of becoming the successful fashion designers of tomorrow. We salute the families for encouraging students to achieve their goals. Our sincere gratitude goes to our Fashion Show Committee for their enthusiastic participation and support. A heartfelt appreciation goes to the generous sponsors for making this event possible.

Dear senior fashion design students: your creativity, devotion and insights are all part of the Woodbury story that we have been writing since 1884. On behalf of Woodbury, I bid you farewell and wish you the best of luck. Always see yourself as good ambassadors of Woodbury. Incredible years are ahead!”
