velle Belgin enjoys embellishing sweatshirts and denim with her colorful machine embroidery. At the Hidden Talent Display, July 9, Yvelle displayed a sweatshirt on which she embroidered a peacock. Upon completion of the embroidery, Yvelle snipped threads in the peacock’s tail feathers to give it a three-dimensional appearance, then added rhinestones for a pop of bling.

The fourth Artists and Crafters’ work retreat and display of hidden talents, organized by Betty Grandt, showcased the creativity of many resident artists and crafters. Held in the Lakeview Clubhouse Multipurpose Room, the event drew many curious residents and family members. Unique items were displayed and fascinating demonstrations were conducted throughout the room. Although items were not for sale, participants made their contact information available for future sales.

WOA Update

18-hole Putting Course At our board of directors meeting July 6, the board approved the putting green proposal. The project will take place August 8 through 12. The project will focus on the refurbishment of base material and the artificial putting green’s surfaces. Our in-house staff will supervise the project, along with resident volunteer John Peterson who will be an extra set of eyes to ensure the quality of the work. John has extensive experience with this type of work. We look forward to the start and completion of this project.

Fitness Studio The Fitness Studio flooring recommendation was also approved at the July 6 board meeting. The carpet flooring will be removed and replaced with interlocking rubber tile flooring. This type of flooring is more conducive to a fitness center and will allow for improved maintenance and sanitation. The flooring is on order and we will communicate a start date for this project soon.

Interior Painting of Clubhouse The interior painting of the Clubhouse will begin August 29. The WOA will close the west end of the building for a seven-day period to allow the work to be completed in an efficient and timely manner. The west end includes the Multipurpose, Westport and Oxford Rooms. The WOA will notify all groups, clubs and instructors of the closure. The WOA will do the same with the east end during the week of September 59. Closures will include the Fitness Studio, locker rooms and Indoor Pool.

New Signage New signage has been posted throughout the parks in Woodbridge.

The signs will serve as reminders for two rules that are of high concern.

The first sign is to remind everyone that dogs must be leashed at all times and the second is to remind everyone that no golf carts are allowed on any walkways.

August? Is it really August? Well, yes it is, friends. Back in the day, the month of August was the tipping point of the summer before school reopened after the Labor Day weekend. Not so any longer. Our lives are ever changing. And for us, summer will not end in August but will continue until late October, early November.

For those who were not in attendance at the July 6 board of directors meeting, the Architectural Review Committee wants you to know that the proposed Design Guidelines 30-day comment period was approved.

Our committee hopes you all had an opportunity to review the proposed amended guidelines; they are clearly an improvement. The intent is to enhance the clarity of rules and guidelines already in place. The amended document will be an asset to all of us in the community.

Woodbridge Fine Art Show

ll are invited to the Annual Fine Art Show to enjoy beautiful works of art created by residents in Clubhouse arts and crafts classes.

The show will be held Saturday, August 6, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. in

the Multipurpose Room. A special table will honor past and present teachers. Artwork will not be for sale but arrangements may be made with an artist to purchase his/her work at a later date. Light refreshments will be served.

SPECIAL NOTE TO ARTISTS: All interested Woodbridge artists are invited to participate in the Fine Art Show. Artists are encouraged to display an early art project done at Woodbridge along with more recent pieces. You may set up your space between 9 and 10 a.m. Bring your own easel(s) to display your work.

Dear Panicked, Rest assured. You have longer than three months to install rearyard landscaping. According to the Design Guidelines, Section II.B.3, a homeowner must submit plans for the area that is enclosed by a Pulte-installed fence, which would include side and rear yards, within 120 days of closing escrow. Such plans should be submitted to the ARC; forms and instructions are available on the Woodbridge portal and at the Clubhouse front desk. Application requests are to be submitted to the front desk the Friday before the ARC meeting. The ARC meets at the Clubhouse on alternating Tuesdays at 9 a.m.; the inspection tours are conducted on the other Tuesdays. The actual schedule is printed in Woodbridge LIFE. According to the CC&R’s, Article V, Section 5.7.3, the landscaping must be completed per the submitted plan within 180 days of closing escrow. Once the work is finished, you will need to contact the ARC for an inspection. After the committee members sign off on it, you will receive a letter of completion from the management company to keep with your house records.

The Pulte salesperson should have reviewed this timeline with you, but all the information is available in the documents you were given before signing the contract. It might be worthwhile to review the requirements before drawing up your plans.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Liberty Park Grand Opening. The board of directors thanks everyone who helped make this event glorious. It’s a large, spectacular park with several outstanding amenities. Thank you for attending this wonderful event.

During the latest board meeting, the directors approved an update to the Rules and Regulation document that had been posted for a 30-day review and comment period. The content of the changes all centered on fishing rules for Lake Rockwell. An updated copy of the entire document is available on the Portal in the Resource Center under Governing Documents. If you have any difficulty finding it, please contact a staff member at the Clubhouse front desk.

The Design Guidelines is having a major re-write. This is the document describing landscape standards. It is now available for your review and the window for submitting comments will close August 12.

The window of time for self-nomination to the one position on the board of directors that will soon be voted upon is now closed. Thank you to those who have a desire to serve at this time.

Wednesday, August 24, at 6 p.m., there will be an informal “Meet the Candidates” night. All the candidates will be invited to attend and be available to talk with residents. Each candidate will have his or her own table to use for handouts and/or flyers that may help to garner a vote. This event is informal and very much one-on-one.

Candidates will be invited to participate in a formal, moderated Q&A “Candidate Forum,” Wednesday, September 7, at 6 p.m. This session will be structured and residents will merely listen to the candidates answer prepared questions that they had not known of before the forum. This should be enlightening and help determine how you will eventually cast your ballot.

STREET TREES Dear ARChie, I recently heard lots of chatter regarding “street trees” and whether they can be removed. Will you shed some light on this subject? Can they be removed without approval? I see this as a gray area that needs further clarification. ~ Chatter Dear Chatter, Glad to hear it was just chatter and not something more. “Street trees,” those planted between the sidewalk and the curb (boulevard strip), are actually “city trees.” If you wish to remove one of those trees, due to its death or disease, it must be replaced with the same tree. ARC approval is required. There is one neighborhood where the trees originally planted had invasive roots. The city approved removal of those trees and replacement with a different tree, but they required all replacement trees in that neighborhood to be the same. This replacement was at the discretion of the homeowner at his own cost.

Good Neighbor Notification Dear ARChie, I’m troubled and concerned about the “Good Neighbor Notification” form I found in my ARC application. Why do I need to have my neighbors approve my architectural and/or landscaping plans, and what if they don’t approve or don’t agree with what I’m proposing?

~ Want to be a Good Neighbor Dear Want to Be, Ahhh, this is actually an easy question for ARChie. The form you have noted is a “Good Neighbor Notification,” not “Good Neighbor Approval.” NOTIFICATION is the key word. I, too, was confused with this form when I first moved into our community. When approaching your neighbor, you need only to ask that they sign the form so that the ARC will have record that your neighbor is aware of the changes you propose. Neighbor “approval” is not required; however, in the best interest of the good of the community, the ARC asks that you be a good neighbor and share your plans. And be sure to share the hard copy of your plan when meeting with neighbors. This process often brings good conversation and the making of good friends.

Fabric Arts: Thursday afternoons are reserved for classes or free sewing time. Unless noted in this newspaper or on the calendar found in the Arts & Crafts Room, this is open sewing time. Bring your machine and your project and have at it. Most find this a good time to bring quilts that need to be laid out. Tables may be pushed together to create a large flat surface. Most classes are scheduled for Thursday afternoons, so watch the calendar.

t’s August and school will be starting soon. For some the first weeks of school will be a review, for others it’s “back to basics.”

This seems like a good time for us to review the basics - the who, what, why, where and when.

• The who… Artists and Crafters of Woodbridge • The what…Classes and workshops • The why… To learn new skills and share the skills we already possess • The where… Westport Room in the Clubhouse • The when… Read on China Painting: Under the guidance of Nancy Myatt, this group of experienced painters meets every Monday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. Each painter brings her own project and supplies. The class fee is $40.

Oil Painting: Patti Barnhart is the coordinator for this group of artists.

Beginner or advanced, all are welcome. Meeting time is each Tuesday at 9 a.m. Bring your own project and materials. A guest artist is brought in quarterly to teach new techniques. Tuesday class/ workshop is free although a fee is charged when a guest artist leads the class. The Westport Room is also reserved Wednesday afternoons for open painting. Just bring your project and paint.

Paper Crafting: If you love to play with scissors and glue, this is the workshop for you. Every Wednesday morning beginning at 9 a.m., you can cut, glue, fold and stamp to your heart’s content. Betty Grandt oversees a group of ladies who, novice or experienced, get together and create. There are scrapbookers and cardmakers in this group.

Knitters & Crocheters: If you knit or crochet, join the group Thursday

Attendees at the July Artists and Crafters General Meeting celebrated dear friend Kathy Dezotte, one of the two original organizers of the Woodbridge Artists and Crafters group, on the completion of 38 radiation treatments for breast cancer. Kathy is devoted to the community as evidenced by managing the Snack Shack, serving on the Lifestyle Committee, making event/activity posters, assembling raffle baskets and harvesting fruit from her yard to make jams to share with friends and neighbors. We are glad to see Kathy back, helping others through her many artistic talents. We are thankful for all she has done for Woodbridge and wish her a complete recovery .

Watercolor Class: Margo Flanagan teaches watercolors on the second Friday of each month at 12 p.m. An example of the project can be found in the window of the Arts and Crafts Room and sign-up sheets are on the yellow communications board. Again, beginners to experienced students are welcome.

UFO: The third Friday of each month from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. is our “unfinished objects” (UFO) day. Doesn’t matter what it is, if you want to get out of the house and spend time with other crafters working on projects, come on by. Depending on the project, we have been known to bring lunch and spend the day. Make use of the room; we have it for the entire day.

Philanthropic endeavors Prayer Bears: We get together the second Monday at 9 a.m. every other month to work on Prayer Bears. These fleece bears are donated to children in need at local hospitals and shelters. No experience is necessary, only a willing heart and hands. Contact Margo Flanagan or Andi Hyden if you have questions on the workshop or on fabric donations.

Pediatric Comfort Dolls: Kaiser Hospital contributes 100 percent of the material needed for this project. Pediatric comfort dolls are given to small children at all three local Kaiser hospitals. Geri Rogers leads a group of dedicated women on the third Monday of each month beginning at 10 a.m.

Willing hands are all that is needed for this workshop.

Dog Beds and Cat Mats: Not to be forgotten are our four-legged friends.

The third Thursday every other month is reserved for them. With donated fabric from residents, we make beds for the animal shelters in Manteca and Ripon. Ellen Wootton can give you any details that you might need.

Hopefully, this might give you a better understanding of what happens each day in the Westport Room and you might feel like dropping by one day.

At a recent dinner for Central Valley Kaiser volunteers, Del Webb women received a certificate of appreciation for making 1,189 cancer pillows for Kaiser Hospital. There are over 324 caring and compassionate volunteers in the Central Valley. Geri Rogers received her 1,500-hour pin and Warren Rogers received his 200-hour pin for years of service. Congratulations to all honored as well as volunteers not present at the dinner. You are all amazing! Your dedication to this worthwhile project is a blessing to many.

ey, ladies, it’s time for the Women of Woodbridge (WOW) meetings to start up again. Mark your calendars for next month to meet September 21.

We meet on the third Wednesday of the month, except for December and the summer months. We women are busy during these breaks with vacations, grandchildren, softball games and any number of outings that suit our fancies.

The September WOW meeting will be all about the October 18 and 19 “1920s Speakeasy” production and event. I say production because it is a big undertaking for WOW. The event has a catered “sit down” dinner complete with real plates, silverware, goblets and beautifully adorned tables. The entertainment is going to be extraordinarily fun and engaging.

This affair will be top notch, just what you’d expect from WOW. Hopefully, the two-night affair will have many guests come in costume of

On September 22 at 2 p.m., two San Joaquin County League of Women Voters members will present nonpartisan pros and cons on the ballot measures for the November election as part of the continuing Speaker Series. Measures which will be on the ballot had not been completely decided at publication deadline time.

The League has two main missions across the country: voter service/education and advocacy.

During national, state and local election periods, voter service becomes the dominant activity. The League is a nonpartisan political organization and never supports nor opposes any candidate or party.

The League members do support or oppose legislation or ballot measures when they have sufficiently studied the issue to come to consensus. However, during voter

service presentations on ballot measures, only fact-based pros and cons are presented. Members consider voter service an educational and informational forum, not a political platform.

The League also sponsors other resources for voters. These resources will be presented as well September 22. The League encourages all voters to be informed and educated.

As always, there is no fee for this presentation; however, please RSVP to the front desk in the Lakeview Clubhouse, as a count is needed for setup and preparation of materials.

I

began submitting “Day Trippin’” articles approximately three years ago but haven’t written one for almost a year, until now.

A few weeks ago, I revisited Pleasanton, California, my hometown for nearly 35 years, and I realized I had neglected to write an article about one of my favorite towns in this area. Only 45 minutes from Manteca, off Highway 580 at the Santa Rita Road Exit, Pleasanton is a very fun town to visit.

This cozy, upscale, rural town was rated #4 out of America’s 50 best cities to live in by “USA Today.” With its tree-lined streets and colorful planter boxes on almost every corner, downtown Main Street is one of Pleasanton’s most popular strolling streets. You can dine in one of over 200 restaurants in and near downtown. The historic “Gay Nineties Pizza” has the best pizza and pasta in town, and is the oldest restaurant in town. Dean’s Café has the best breakfast of all, with over 260 omelets to choose from, along with an extensive lunch menu. You will love the outside fine-dining establishments available all along Main Street, with American, Italian and Mexican restaurants topping the list.

Some of the many interesting places to visit are the Pleasanton Historical Museum, the Victorian-looking Pleasanton Hotel, the classy Rose Hotel, the Classic Car Sales Exhibit (for you vintage car buffs), Castlewood Country Club, Ruby Hill Winery (for you wine-tasting enthusiasts) and the

any of us grew up in the greater San Francisco Bay Area and remember the Presidio as an army base. It is much more accessible than it was in that era and some trails pass through old gun emplacements – reminders of the long military history of the Bay Area. This is really a jewel of a park with spectacular views of the bay, Golden Gate Bridge, Fort Point, Marin County, Alcatraz, etc., plus hiking/ walking trails, museums, National Cemetery, clean invigorating air and so much more.

For you shopping hounds, there are lots of interesting shops to browse in and spend your hard-earned retirement dollars.

“Google” Pleasanton, CA, then choose a day soon and “trip” into this very special town.

In general, this park is dog friendly but dogs are not allowed in the National Cemetery, located just west and behind the museums. For more information, go to www.nps.gov/prs/index.htm. I recommend that you visit this website where you will find pictures, information for the handicapped and how to fully enjoy the park. In general, the trails are unpaved but you can also enjoy the tremendous views from the sidewalks that run through much of the park or ride the free PresidiGo Around the Park Shuttle.

Taking BART, disembark at the first station, Embarcadero, and walk up to Market Street. The free shuttle stops just north of the BART station at the corner of Drumm and Market Streets. Walk along Drumm (on the northeast side of Market) and look for the PresidiGo bus sign (just steps from the corner), which will be marked and has the schedule: weekdays 9:15 a.m. to 4 p.m.; weekends are 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The bus will let you off across the street from the big parking lot and the brick buildings containing museums, the Park Service Office (where you may obtain trail maps and other information) and restaurant; you may bring a bag lunch or eat at the restaurant. I have not been to all the museums but I understand they are quite interesting and that one is a Disney Museum – there are fees.

If you are going to walk or bike, the trails to the south are easy and form loops so you do not have to retrace your steps. They go past a picnic area and playground with the all-important public restrooms. There are many trails to choose from and each has something to recommend it. The atmosphere is lovely with huge stands of trees where once there were just windy sand dunes. The trails along the bay from the Marina to the Golden Gate Bridge and beyond will be the subject of another column for another day.

After you return downtown, if you want to eat, the Ferry Building has several good restaurants, both in and behind the building. China Town is within walking distance and you can easily get to Fisherman’s Wharf by taking one of the colorful trolleys (Clippercard) from the trolley stops in front of the Ferry Building or, if you aren’t “walked out” by now, you can walk by going to the Ferry Building and turning left. It is about a mile of great views and interesting restaurants.

Cautionary advice: DO NOT TAKE BART during commute time.

Esther Mack enjoys the outdoor pool almost every morning. After her husband passed away about a year ago, Esther had to make a 360-degree change in her life. Wanting to do something different from what she did at work, Esther now keeps busy by volunteering for SHARPs four hours a day or longer, checking doors for people on vacation, painting over graffiti, and performing whatever other duties are needed. She also volunteers at Manteca Senior Center where she helps with trips and tours, signing people up, taking deposits and answering the phone.

Esther would like residents to use the pools more and she encourages everyone to come down.

Serpa said the workouts increase neuro-muscular mapping which helps prevent Alzheimer’s and have enabled Edmund to get on and off Fitness Center machines more quickly.

Garden Tasks for Garden Tasks June for August

I

f you’ve gone into your garden in the 6DQGL /DUVRQ last few weeks, you’re probably a little disgusted with what the heat has done to our yards.

I was feeling great about my potted plants the last two months -- just thinking that I’ve been paying a lot of attention to the water this year so the whiteflies didn’t take over. Slowly over a couple of weeks, the minor chewing on my potted plants became a major invasion in about every pot. I guess it’s the geranium budworms or tobacco budworms. The treatment isn’t quick or guaranteed. I did my first spraying of an insecticide two days ago and it’s really hard to spray on the bottom and top of the leaves. The instructions say repeat every 5-7 days. Everything I’ve read seems to indicate it’s a lost cause, likely because I was lulled into thinking all was good and not paying attention to insects or disease on my plants. I’ve read that if you go out after dusk, you can search through your plants looking for the caterpillars but that’s not anything I’m personally comfortable with.

Does anyone else think we’ve had a lot of flies this summer? I don’t remember seeing so many before but I’m thinking one of the reasons might be that my neighbors have a couple of outdoor animals and maybe the flies are attracted to the stuff in the backyard. That’s a new addition to our neighborhood and we didn’t have them this bad last year so I’m not sure what the real reason is. Flies are attracted to animal waste because it’s a good place to lay their eggs. Maybe a word to animal owners is to try to pick up your animal’s waste as frequently as you can, especially during hotter weather.

If you have vegetables in your garden, they should be at about their peak this month. Your peppers have had plenty of heat to ripen and I’m sure if you’ve got zucchini, you’re probably giving them away to your neighbors by now!

Now is a good time to go to your local nursery to pick up spring bulbs.

There’s still time to put in shade-loving plants in your yard for enjoyment into the fall.

Continue feeding your citrus plants monthly for best results at harvest +\GUDQJHDV FRPH LQWR EORRP IURP 0D\ WR -XQH DQG DUH JUHDW IRU GULHG time. Also continue feeding your acid-loving plants like azaleas, camellias, à RZHUV LQWR WKH IDOO rhododendrons and gardenias into mid-September. You can also divide plants this month if they’re looking crowded, dying in the middle or not performing as well as when first planted. You can collect seeds from plants such as nasturtium.

Keep an eye out for slugs and snails and bait when you can or pick up because now they are laying eggs for the winter. The fewer snails now, the fewer during wet months.

Roses can be trimmed back a little further each month and continue watching for aphids. Give roses a feeding now and in October to continue to get blooms into November.

I recently did some research for one of our residents who was complaining about little black dots all over her fence. I believe what she has is possibly a

fungus that grows in mulch and bark and it’s called Artillery Fungus or Shotgun Fungus. I’d never heard of it but I believe it’s what this owner has on her fence. It’s a fungus that shoots out spores.

It’s common when the mulch is overly damp. The black spots can be seen on white fences, siding and even on white cars.

It’s difficult to get the spots off the fence. An article by Dr. Donald D. Davis of Penn State (personal. psu.edu/faculty/d/d/ddd2/) addresses many questions about this fungus.

The experts recommend, if you have the fungus, to pick up your old mulch, then lay down plastic and only use mulch-like rocks or gravel. It’s less common to find the fungus on tree-type bark. The article has several suggestions for removing the fungus from your fence and car. We actually had a couple of spots from parking next to bark and after going through the car wash, the spots were 'RXEOH 'HOLJKW D K\EULG WHD URVH LV D IUDJUDQW IDYRULWH ,W still there. I took a towel and rubbed them off. The article states that the newer or shinier the fence or car, the better chance to get the spots off.

Any new transplants you put in the ground right now are going to require extra water and possibly shade until they adjust to their new surroundings.

Pick up fallen fruit from trees as this attracts wasps and critters. Stake overly tall perennials and annuals with wire supports. Continue deadheading flowers for more blooms into the fall.

In bloom in August are crape myrtle, impatiens, marigold, petunia, fuchsia, clematis, begonias and hibiscus, to name a few.

August is a good month to go up into the foothills to visit Apple Hill or the Plymouth wine country region. Butch and I took a ride up to Greenhorn Golf Course for a nice lunch one day with our little convertible and enjoyed (not really!) the 102 degree weather as we wound our way up through sloppy, choppy Copperopolis. The restaurant wasn’t overly busy but is a nice place to grab a relaxing lunch and a view of the surrounding golf course and foothills. I always recommend Amador Flower Farms in Plymouth as a destination and a nice drive for a summer or fall day!

Dog Beds and Cat Mats. This caring group of seamstresses meets the third Thursday of each month from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Beds and mats are delivered to the Manteca Animal Shelter and each adopted dog or cat goes home with one. According to Ellen Wootton, group leader, since its inception in 2015, the group has sewn and donated 468 dog beds and 294 cat mats to the animal shelter. The next meeting will be Thursday, August 18, at 12:30. All are welcome!

Bring your sewing machine if you want to. Many people are needed to stuff and sew beds/mats.

Kathy Comden uses a large plastic needle to create “Aunt Philly’s Toothbrush Rugs” from bed sheets torn into strips. Quick and easy to make, these “rag rugs” require no sewing. Although she prefers to use a specialized needle purchased for this craft, Kathy occasionally uses a needle she made from a modified plastic toothbrush.

Pickleball Corner

By Marcia Umberger The opening day of summer found the pickleball group on the courts playing a round robin. The evening turned cool as the playing started.

What a great way to kick off summer! We had eight women and eight men playing against each other. After four games, the top two women joined up with the top two men for a mixed-doubles final match. Lori Meseke and Joe Victoria took on Susie Blair and Eddie Wilson. Both sides fought to the finish with Susie and Eddie being victorious. Our next round robin is scheduled for sometime in September.

Our long-awaited new courts officially opened July 23. The new schedule for playing is below: Mixed doubles:

Softball A Softball Contest

OK, Woodbridgians, you can get a free lunch at the Snack Shack by winning this contest. The object is to identify the pictures and then draw some kind of connection to our Woodbridge softball program. There will be two prizes (worth $6 each) awarded to the first two people who accurately identify the picture and connect it to some aspect of the softball game.

Brothers and Sisters Norman Rockwell’s painting “Family Tree” appeared on the cover of the October 24, 1959, edition of Saturday Evening Post. It seems fitting, in this Rockwell-inspired community, that a series featuring brothers, sisters, cousins and other family members who reside in Woodbridge be accompanied by Rockwell’s painting. At the inception of this project, we didn’t know how deep family ties go in Woodbridge and were thrilled with the overwhelming response to our idea. It will take several editions to include all participants.

E

ven though Kay Green lived in the Waterloo area outside of Stockton and Michelle Gernheuser lived in Manteca, Michelle wanted her mother “safer and closer” after her stepfather died.

Kay was ready for a change. She found it hard, both physically and mentally, to take care of her Waterloo home. When Michelle encouraged her mom to check out Woodbridge, Kay discovered “the community was a good fit” and the best part was when her daughter and sonin-law moved into Woodbridge two years ago.

Although Michelle and her husband loved living in their Manteca “dream home” for 10 years, they were ready to simplify their lives. When they visited Kay at her Woodbridge home, they were attracted to the beauty of the grounds (the lake, walkways and parks), the quietness and the amenities offered.

Moving into Woodbridge was an easy decision in the end. The first house they looked at had all of their “must haves” and Michelle and Ben put an offer in that day. Before they knew it, they were downsizing from a 3,200-square-foot home to one with 1,339 square feet. They never once regretted their decision.

Kay enjoys life at Woodbridge and especially enjoys dances and playing pinochle and poker when she isn’t traveling. Although she’s “cut back on traveling,” Kay spent February in Florida visiting family. April found her in Oregon and in May, she took a 12-day trip to Arizona /Grand Canyon with Liz, her friend of 40 years. Next month she and Liz will take a four-week travel trailer trip through Oregon and Washington, visiting both of their families along the way. Their final destination includes camping along the Icicle River in Leavenworth, Washington, for nine days and visiting Liz’s family. October’s trip to Virginia and Washington, D.C., with her two sisters-in-law is (might be) her last trip of the year.

Because Michelle is a sixth-seventh grade math/science teacher at New Haven Elementary School, her Woodbridge activities are mainly “involved in the outer fringes.” Ben, recently retired, serves the community as a block captain for Neighborhood Watch.

Kay remembers that Michelle, being the oldest, was the instigator in most of her fond (and occasionally, not so fond) memories. One incident that stands out is the Christmas Michelle convinced her sister “we wouldn’t notice if they sneaked downstairs after we had gone to bed and unwrapped and rewrapped all the presents Santa had left under the tree. They rewrapped them all as only a 6- and 4-year-old can wrap. My husband and I laughed until we cried.”

Michelle remembers her mom as being a typical mother with the strong Midwest values of the ’50s and ‘60s. “She was consistent: Yes was yes; no was no and there were very few maybes. Her philosophy of life was and is, “You play the hand you’re dealt – don’t wish for another hand.”

“My mother also is a terrific cook and hostess,” said Michelle. “Although she would deny it, I could show up at her door unannounced with 10 friends and she would figure out a way to feed us, and to feed us well.”

Kay shared that Michelle and Ben are “truly a couple to be proud of and it always makes me smile to say I’m their mom and they live in Woodbridge, too.”

Although both mother and daughter have busy lives, Michelle likes to pop in for short visits and gets comfort knowing “Woodbridge is a safe, secure place for her mother to live, as well as giving her the opportunity to make new friends.”

B

etty Grandt and Sheila Zaballos are not only sisters but best friends who truly enjoy each other’s company.

Betty, who will have lived in Woodbridge eight years in November, had never entertained thoughts of moving from her townhouse in Union City. She did, however, commute to Lake Comanche via the Altamont several times a week to help her dad care for her mother who had Alzheimer’s.

Two months after her father died (Mom, 2002; Dad, 2009), Betty, Debbie Cosetto and Kenita Ferguson visited Marcia Umberger in Woodbridge. The foursome had worked together in the front office of Logan High School (Union City) for many years.

Betty remembers even though that first visit was in 105 degree heat, she was impressed. After watching her mom, dad and mother-in-law struggle the last parts of their lives, she appreciated how handicap accessible the homes were and that one “could age easier in the homes and facilities in Woodbridge.”

It was only a month later that her husband Robert, after hearing the girls’ talking, asked to see the community. He, too, was impressed enough to say, “OK, let’s move.”

Just two years ago, Sheila moved from Livermore to Woodbridge. “I had fallen in love with the community when visiting my sister. The people were so friendly; there were so many activities and the nice single story homes were enticing (I had a townhouse). However, the most important reason was to live close by my sister.”

“We do things together on the spur of the moment and then have lunch or dinner together.” Favorite restaurants include eating Chinese at Dave Wong’s in Stockton and baby back ribs at Famous Dave’s in Tracy.

Betty’s interests include quilting, paper crafting and stamping – she started the stamping class, “but it’s everybody’s thing.” Betty was chair of the July 9 Art Show where Woodbridge’s “Hidden Talent” was showcased.

Sheila’s pastimes include golf, reading and scrapbooking – she’s organizing pictures of her family by year and putting them in photo albums that eventually her son and daughter will be given to enjoy. Clubhouse activities include playing 5Deck Canasta and the morning Walking class.

Both sisters share a favorite childhood memory. Sheila would be put to bed in her crib and would awaken in Betty’s bed. Said six-year-older Betty, “We could be fighting like cats and dogs during the day, but at night I wanted Sheila in my bed.”

October plans include a three-week vacation to the Northeast. The sisters will fly into Washington, D.C., tour for a couple of days and then rent a car to drive to Niagara Falls. From there, it’s into Pennsylvania to visit the QVC studio, Amish country and to see the fall colors in Vermont and New Hampshire (Sheila’s “bucket list”) before returning to Washington, D.C., for the flight home. Since Betty has visited the Northeast several times, her “bucket list” includes seeing the fall colors and visiting quilting and rubber stamping shops.

Betty knows their parents are “looking down and smiling” at the loving bond they instilled in the sisters. Sheila reinforced their closeness with “My sister has always been there for me.”

H

istory was made Thursday, June 30, at the United States Olympic swimming trials held in Omaha, Nebraska. That’s when a California swimmer finished the 200-meter breaststroke in 2 minutes 7.17 seconds, thus setting the American record. That young man was Josh Prenot, a graduate of U.C. Berkeley’s class of 2016. Josh’s many fans will be cheering him on at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, only a few weeks away.

Prenot’s win at Omaha’s Century Link Center was the second-fastest time in history for the 200-meter breaststroke. It’s only a tenth of a second off the world record set in 2012 by Akihiro Yamaguchi of Japan.

Winning events is nothing new to Josh, who turned 23 on July 28. During his four years at Berkeley, he broke records and won several titles for his team, the California Golden Bears.

Even in his freshman season, Josh won accolades for his swimming. He was named “Newcomer of the Year” by the Pac-12, an athletic conference consisting of 12 universities that operate in the western United States.

prize. (IM stands for individual medley, in which someone swims all four strokes -butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle, in that order.)

This goodlooking young man has even traveled internationally to participate in swimming competitions.

After his junior year at Berkeley, for example, he was selected to compete at the 2015 World University Games, which took place in South Korea. There he earned three medals, one silver and two golds.

Josh hails from Central California, where he swam for several years at the Santa Maria Swim Club. His dad, retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Bill Prenot, was stationed other places over the years, so the family didn’t always live in this state. You can be sure that wherever they lived, Josh located a good swimming pool where he could practice his strokes. Bill and his wife, Tammy, currently live near Santa Maria.

Carol and Ed Prenot are Josh’s proud grandparents, and we at Woodbridge are fortunate that they chose to live here. “Josh has been a good swimmer ever since early childhood,” says Carol. From her I learned about other gifts with which Josh is blessed.

“He has always been a bright student and chose physics as his major at Berkeley.” Carol adds that Josh plays the piano well and is very considerate of his family and friends.

Drawn by the good reputation of Del Webb, Carol and Ed looked at a few of its retirement communities before moving from Danville to Woodbridge. They have been here three years, and they are quite happy with their choice. “We are impressed with how neat and tidy it is in this community, and how friendly and helpful people are.” They enjoy many activities, such as cribbage, bunco, trivia and chair volleyball. They especially like playing bocce ball with other dedicated players, for whom they bring refreshments to share before or after the game.

In addition to their son Bill, Carol and Ed raised five other children, who are now scattered around the country. All of the siblings were glued to their television screens when Josh competed in Omaha, and they excitedly exchanged pictures of his big win with each other.

If we can’t be at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, I’m sure many of us Woodbridge residents plan to watch the summer games on our television sets. I know I will. I especially look forward to August 9, when semifinals for the 200-meter breaststroke are scheduled. The final will follow on August 10.

The whole idea is to introduce you to more information about the producers, the varietals, the growers, the retailers, and any other aspect of the wine business I can think of. Our classes are comprised of people interested in wine and socializing. Our presentations are short and our parties afterward are wonderful. I frequently have participants with a lot of knowledge about wine tell me they have learned something new. If you leave the class with just one new tidbit about wine that you didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know before and if you had a great time socializing with your friends and neighbors, then the evening was a success.

All classes, except in December, start at 6 p.m. and run until 8:30 p.m.

Keeping Our Pets and the Woodbridge Community Safe

ell, what can one say about “Animal Solid Waste?”

All pet owners should be responsible owners and are reminded to be aware of where their dogs and cats do their business. Fines can be levied.

As pet owners, we are responsible for picking up our pet’s solid waste in all areas of our community. Recently an increase of solid waste from our pets is being seen throughout our community. To those who are not picking up after their pets, shame on you.

We all enjoy living in a clean and beautiful neighborhood and it is disrespectful to NOT clean up after our pets. Our residents walk along these areas and grandchildren run through the grass, so I’m sure no one wants to step in your pet’s business.

There are many pet waste receptacles throughout our community and it only takes a few seconds to pick up your pet’s business and do the right thing!

• Pet owners who are seen not picking up their pet’s waste should be reported to the

Clubhouse.

• Pet owners must comply with the Woodbridge Rules and Regulations.

• Visiting family members of Woodbridge residents may bring their pets but must also comply with our rules and be in compliance with the ordinance of the City of Manteca (Leash Law 6.08.010 Running at Large Prohibited) and Woodbridge Rules and Regulations.

As you may have determined from my articles, I am a very passionate pet owner and my girls have trained me well. I believe my girls are no more spoiled or loved than other Woodbridge pets and their owners. I have met many responsible pet owners at Woodbridge and we all strive for the same things. We live in a beautiful community and we owe it to ourselves to keep it clean.

In regard to the recent Pet Registration form, filling out this form is voluntary. All pet owners are encouraged to complete the new form and update their pet’s information.

Be considerate, be kind and be the person your pet thinks you are!

with angel hair pasta. The clams and mussels were done extremely well and the broth had just the right amount of acidity and flavor served on al dente pasta.

Ciao Bella has several entrees including filet mignon, steak, veal, chicken, prawns, salmon and calamari served with different sauces. Their menu also includes pasta dishes served with different meats and sauces including meat lasagna and four vegetarian entrees including eggplant Parmesan. Additionally, they serve different raviolis with three choices of sauce.

The dessert menu included cakes and ice cream. We shared a dish of spumoni that tasted refreshing and flavorful.

The few Italian scenery pictures hanging on the walls, gentle music and the right lighting made Ciao Bella a great dining atmosphere. Combined with the fine wine, the luscious food and great service, we had a wonderful dining experience that evening and I strongly recommend Ciao Bella.
