Summary: This is collaborative effort between the classroom teacher and the art teacher.

Creating of NeoPopRealist Hedgehog would be not only the way of student's self expression, challenging his/her imagination and sense of harmony, but also a studying of NeoPopRealist art and its philosophy for happier life. The following art lesson plan breaks down complications of the professional artist's creative process to the level, when NeoPopRealism concept could be understood by the beginners children.

2. Learn new ink pen/pen pattern drawing technique, experiment with drawing.

3. Learn about hedgehog.

3. Create artwork Hedgehog inspired by the artworks of Nadia Russ, who used ink pen and white paper. No eraser should be used (important).

Materials: - ink pen black 0.7mm Rolleball, Sharpie Ultra Fine or similar - 8.5"x11" white papers cardstock (cut 1/2) - a book "How to Draw Without Eraser: Children's Guide to the World of NeoPopRealism", ISBN: 9780615521824 Day 1: Students have previously read book "How to Draw Without Eraser: Children's Guide to the World of NeoPopRealism", ISBN: 9780615521824 with the classroom teacher. They learned about hedgehog and NeoPopRealism drawing style concept and artist Nadia Russ who created this style (or see Resources). The art teacher prepares ink pen and papers for all the students.

The art teacher demonstrates the drawing process.

Teacher creates the hedgehog's shape (see below).

repetitive patterns, such as circles, dots, lines... It can be any imaginative patterns. Teacher explains why he/she needs no eraser: if a "mistake" made, it visually disappears because the following patterns makes the whole composition balanced and a 'mistake' invisible.

Students use imagination to create the repetitive patterns' gallery. A book "How to Draw Without Eraser: Children's Guide to the World of NeoPopRealism" contains a special chapter with pages, which students must fill with different imaginative patterns. Students use their imagination and create variety of patterns: big and small circles, triangles, whirles, squares, lines, waves, zigzags, their combinations and variations. As an option (if they do not have the books), teachers can give students a piece of paper 8.5"x11" divided into 1.5 inch squares, each square-section students must fill with different imaginative repetitive pattern.

Day 2: Remind students the NeoPopRealism ink pen pattern drawing concept and that eraser is never used. The drawing of patterns is intuitive and meditative process.

After practicing with the repetitive patterns, students create artwork "Hedgehog" from beginning to end, on 5.5"x8" paper, using different imaginative patterns: simple or more complicated, such as circles, dots, and paralleled lines, their variations and different combinations.

After their drawings are completed, students compare the results, discuss their work and NeoPopRealism art drawing style. Artworks can be laminated by art teacher and exhibited or scanned and posted online.

Nadia RUSS is a Ukrainian-born Russian painter/ graphic artist living in the USA, she is famous for innovative NeoPopRealism art and ink pen pattern drawing, the meditative style that she created in 1989.

Instead of careful copying reality - wild life or human figure, Nadia RUSS creates her artwork using imagination. As Nadia RUSS experimented and developed her distinctive techniques, her drawings became more symbolic. For her drawings she uses white paper and black ink pen. However, sometimes, she uses blue ink on white paper and gold/silver ink on black paper.

How did Nadia RUSS develop her unique and original style NeoPopRealism? RUSS had studied classical drawing and composition since she was a child, but as she studied she found herself drawn to produce less realistic, more imaginative artwork. In 1989, she created NeoPopRealism art style and ink pattern drawing concept: line creates sections; then, these section filled with different repetitive patterns, some section should be left blank. If artwork made on canvas using color paints and a brush, then, it would be a combination of sections filled with hot and cold color paint, partly with patterns. In 1990, RUSS exhibited her first ink/ pattern drawings in a group exhibition in Moscow’s famous Manege. Later, she was exhibiting her artwork in art galleries. In 1996, she moved to the Freeport, Bahamas, where her artwork gained special brightness. In 2000, she came to the USA where she lives till present. Nadia Russ create a term “NeoPopRealism” January 4, 2003.

Same year, she manifested her new style of visual arts NeoPopRealism internationally. In 2004, she created NeoPopRealism 10 canons for happier life. In 2006-2007, several US and European museums collected Nadia Russ’ paintings and drawings and now, these artworks are in the permanent collections of these museums.

About hedgehog: Hedgehogs are found through parts of Europe, Asia, Africa and New Zealand. The name hedgehog came into use around the year 1450, derived from the Middle English heyghoge, from heyg, hegge ("hedge"), because it frequents hedgerows, and hoge, hogge ("hog"), from its piglike snout. Other names include urchin, hedgepig and furze-pig.

Hedgehogs are easily recognized by their spines, which are hollow hairs made stiff with keratin. the hedgehog. However, spines normally come out when a hedgehog sheds baby spines and replaces them with adult spines. This is called "quilling". When under extreme stress or during sickness, a hedgehog can also lose spines.

A defense that all species of hedgehogs possess is the ability to roll into a tight ball, causing all of the spines to point outwards. However, its effectiveness depends on the number of spines, and since some of the desert hedgehogs evolved to carry less weight, they are much more likely to try to run away and sometimes even attack the intruder, trying to ram into the intruder with its spines, and rolling as a last resort.

This results in a different number of predators for different species: while forest hedgehogs have relatively few, primarily birds (especially owls) and ferrets, smaller species like the long-eared hedgehog are preyed on by foxes, wolves and mongooses.

The hedgehog's back is made up of two large muscles, which control the positioning of its quills.

There are about 5,000 to 6,500 quills on the average hedgehog, and these are durable on the outside, while being filled with air pockets on the inside. The hedgehog uses its quills to protect itself from predators, using muscles which draw their quilled skin to cover their full body, and pulling in the parts of their bodies not covered, such as their head, feet, and belly. This form of defense is the hedgehog's most successful, but is usually their last resort.

Hedgehogs are fairly vocal and communicate through a combination of grunts, snuffles and/or squeals, depending on species. Self-anointing Hedgehogs occasionally perform a ritual called anointing. When the animal encounters a new scent, it will lick and bite the source, then form a scented froth in its mouth and paste it on its spines with its tongue. The specific purpose of this ritual is unknown, but some experts believe anointing camouflages the hedgehog with the new scent of the area and provides a possible poison or source of infection to predators poked by their spines. Anointing is sometimes also called anting because of a similar behavior in birds.

The hedgehog sleeps for a large portion of the daytime either under cover of bush, grass, rock or in a hole in the ground.

Hedgehogs feed on insects, snails, frogs and toads, snakes, bird eggs, carrion, mushrooms, grass roots, berries, melons and watermelons.
