Festive Finances Unwrapped

Mastering Your Holiday Money Game

You blinked and summer was over. And now we move into leaves changing, cooler weather, and the kids back in school. And just like that, we move from one thing to the next: The upcoming holiday season! But amidst all the tidings of comfort and joy, there's one thing that can cast a shadow over all of the festivities: financial stress and playing the money game.

The word “budget” never felt good to me.
06 / WOMEN THRIVE SPECIAL FEATURE

With the doom and gloom of the economy, inflation rising, and interest rates at an all-time high – many people are thinking about the holidays differently, at least from a financial standpoint I don’t want your holiday spirit to be dampened by money woes and worries! And I don’t want you to think you can’t live your best life during the holiday season because cash flow looks a little different

So, with a dash of strategic planning, a sprinkle of savvy saving, and a generous helping of mindful spending, I want to help you navigate the holiday season without breaking the bank and learning how to play the money game along the way So, here are 8 tips to help you unwrap the secrets to a joyful and financially responsible holiday season!

1. Jingle All the Way, but with a Budget:

I will be honest The word “budget” never felt good to me It's not quite as exciting as unwrapping all those holiday gifts As a Money Mindset Coach, the word budget feels like a limit. But that’s just perspective. If you don’t like the word budget, let’s think of this as an allotted amount you are setting aside for a purpose because this is going to be a foundational piece of a financially stress-free pie.

Start by listing all your anticipated holiday expenses –gifts, decorations, travel, parties, and add in a little extra for contingency. Assign a realistic dollar amount to each category and stick to it! This will be your north star, helping you prioritize spending while preventing impulse buys that can haunt your bank account long after the tinsel is packed away. You can jingle all the way while playing the festive money game. >>

With a dash of strategic planning, a sprinkle of savvy saving, and a generous helping of mindful spending, you can navigate the holiday season without breaking the bank

2. Deck the Halls with DIY

Festive decorations are wonderful, but they don't have to drain your bank account Embrace your creative side and craft your own decorations! Gather pinecones, create paper snowflakes, or repurpose items from around your home And if you’re unsure about how to play this aspect of the money game, there are so many YouTube Videos, Pinterest Pins, and DIY Bloggers who have generously shared their how-tos You can find a tutorial for anything these days

Not only will you save money, but you'll also infuse your space with a unique, personal touch that store-bought decor can't replicate You can make it even more fun by inviting friends and family to join in on the DIY Décor!

3. Santa's Little Saver Elves

One of my favorite things to do is save for the holidays well in advance, so the money game isn’t too overwhelming Christmas in July is a real thing to me in that regard There are plenty of holidays that take place well in advance of December And with those holidays come holiday sales If you happen to find a good deal early, snag it and save it until gift-giving time

And remember, online shopping makes it easier than ever to find the best deals but don't stop at the first digital storefront you visit Use comparison websites and apps to scout out the best prices before making a purchase

Remember, a few minutes of research can lead to substantial savings – and those savings can fund other aspects of your holiday plans.

If buying all those gifts in advance and storing them in your hall closet isn’t an option, try this:

Set up a dedicated savings account specifically for holiday expenses and contribute to it regularly throughout the year if that makes it a little easier. Even if you must start now, it’s never too late to save for the money game. A little bit each week can add up to a sleigh-load of financial peace by the time the holiday season arrives. It's like giving yourself a gift of financial foresight!

4. Pot-Luck Partying

Holiday parties and gatherings are a hallmark of the season, but it's easy to get carried away with excessive spending on menu items and ingredients Plan your dishes in advance, make a shopping list, and stick to it Avoid overbuying perishable items that might go to waste and consider opting for store-brand products, which can be just as delicious as the name brands

An even better idea? Host a potluck Have your guests RSVP with a dish or drink to share The more, the merrier! And you won’t have to do all of the cooking It’s a win/win for all! YES! You can plan a holiday gathering and not break the bank in the process

5. A Wreath of Resourcefulness

Gift giving is fun But it doesn’t always have to be something store-bought For the people in your life who seem to have everything, buying them another knick-knack just seems unnecessary. Perhaps giving personalized gifts, creating homemade treats, or offering the gift of quality time together may be better! Remember, it's the thought that counts –and a thoughtful gesture doesn't have to come with a hefty price tag.

Another way to get resourceful, and one of my personal favorite holiday gifting hacks, is to use all of those Credit Card Points you have racked up over the year. You can buy gift cards and give them as gifts or use the gift cards yourself to stores where you would make purchases for others. You’d be surprised at just how much this keeps your holiday cash spending to a minimum, and this will really help you unlock the money game.

6. Give Yourself Gifts too, Responsibly

It's tempting to treat yourself during the holiday season, and you absolutely should! You deserve it! But consider doing so, in moderation. And whatever you plan to spend on your gifts to yourself should go into the budget as well.

Whether it's a spa day, a new book, or that gadget you've had your eye on – you are allowed to have nice things. By planning and budgeting for these treats in advance, you can avoid post-holiday regret when your bank statement arrives >>

WOMEN THRIVE / 09

7. Happy Holiday Travels

Traveling to see loved ones is a non-negotiable for many We can find ways to save here too First, flexibility is your friend Consider adjusting your travel dates, as flights and accommodations tend to be more affordable during off-peak times

Compare prices diligently using travel websites and apps You want to make sure you are getting the best deals on flights and lodging

If you are bringing presents with you, consider shipping them directly to your location when possible It will save on packing costs Packing light not only simplifies your journey but also helps you avoid hefty holiday baggage fees and the airport money game Additionally, plan your activities in advance, taking advantage of discounted online tickets and bundled attraction passes Lastly, make the most of travel rewards and loyalty programs If you have them, it’s a great time to use them.

8. Spread the Financial Love

As you bask in the warmth of the holiday spirit, remember that giving extends beyond material gifts. Consider donating to charitable causes that are near and dear to your heart. Maybe volunteering at a local organization that needs some help during the holiday season would be more up your alley. Either way, acts of kindness and giving back can bring a sense of fulfillment that transcends any amount of money spent. You will feel good to know you have helped make someone’s holiday a little better. Tis the season of giving after all.

The holiday season doesn't have to be synonymous with financial stress. With a sprinkle of strategic planning, a dash of mindful spending, and a generous helping of creativity, you can navigate the festivities with financial ease. Prepping in advance helps a great deal. It allows you to wrap up those worries and embrace the joy of the season, knowing that your holiday memories will be even more magical when you've also unwrapped the gift of financial peace.

Cheers to a happy, stress-free, and budget-friendly holiday season!

Empowering Black Women and Youth

The Key to Economic Progress in Thriving Communities

In the heart of every thriving black community lies an often underappreciated force that fuels progress and success: black women With a steadfast determination to break barriers and shatter stereotypes, black women are rising to prominence in various fields However, financial empowerment remains a crucial aspect in ensuring the sustainability and growth of their communities This article digs into the significance of generational wealth and growth for black women and explores how educating the youth on finances can pave the way for a prosperous future

ECONOMIC 12 / WOMEN THRIVE

It is time for the black community to attain financial independence, knowledge, and generational wealth Unfortunately, many in the community struggle to make ends meet and lack awareness of financial tools such as High Yield Savings Accounts and investments, as well as the importance of having a Will & Trust These crucial topics were not adequately covered in schools, but it's important to understand that the blame does not solely rest with our parents, who couldn't teach what they were never taught themselves Many were raised with an emphasis on hard work, education, and securing stable jobs As adults, we should take the initiative to educate ourselves about finances and take responsibility for building upon the foundation given to us by our parents

It’s disheartening to see how frequently members of the black community, including black women, face challenges when dealing with funeral expenses and asset division after a loved one’s passing. That's why I've collaborated with a fantastic company that offers assistance to families, providing easy access and guidance in creating Wills and Trusts, helping them ensure their affairs are in order.

It is important to prepare our youth for financial resilience, which refers to the ability to withstand and recover from financial setbacks, such as unexpected expenses, job losses, or economic downturns Building this resilience is essential for economic progress and empowerment and can serve as a shield against cycles of poverty and inequality

In the modern world, we have no real excuse for lacking financial education since information is readily available at our fingertips. Social media, with its rapid growth, offers a wealth of learning opportunities just by scrolling through various content. However, it's unfortunate that many people predominantly use social media for entertainment rather than education. Just imagine the possibilities if we dedicated even just one hour a day to learning and improving our financial knowledge.>>

WOMEN THRIVE / 13
" It is important to prepare our youth for financial resilience."

Generational wealth refers to assets, resources, and knowledge that pass down through family lines, providing a solid foundation for future generations For black women, historically marginalized and oppressed, creating and preserving generational wealth has been an uphill battle Today, though, they are increasingly assuming key roles in the workforce, entrepreneurship, and education, with the potential to make a significant impact on their community’s financial prosperity

According to research conducted by the McKinsey Global Institute, empowering black women financially could potentially add up to $500 billion to the US economy, annually. This highlights the transformative power that lies within the hands of black women, and underscores the importance of fostering an environment that encourages economic progress and financial education.

As we celebrate the accomplishments of black women, it is equally essential to focus on the future: the youth. Cultivating a financially literate generation is essential to break the cycle of economic inequality.

By providing the youth with financial education early on, we can equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed decisions about money, investments, and savings. Which is why I love YFL Family Mint. Mint is online money management and goalsetting application for 5th-9th graders, that offers an engaging way for kids to learn financial responsibility.

To effectively educate the youth on finances, we must prioritize the integration of financial literacy into school curriculums By teaching the principles of budgeting, saving, and investing, we can empower the next generation to build and manage their wealth successfully Moreover, workshops and seminars can be organized to provide practical guidance on financial planning, debt management, and building credit

Beyond classroom education, mentorship and representation play crucial roles in shaping the financial aspirations of young black women Establishing mentorship programs that connect successful black women with young girls can provide invaluable insights and guidance. These mentorship relationships can serve as sources of inspiration, motivating young minds to pursue their financial goals fearlessly.

Entrepreneurship offers a promising path to financial independence and growth. Encouraging and supporting black women entrepreneurs can significantly impact the community’s economic landscape. Providing access to funding, resources, and mentorship can help uplift the next generation of business leaders.

In conclusion, the economic progress of a thriving black community depends on the empowerment of its women and the financial literacy of its youth. Generational wealth and growth serve as the pillars of sustainable development, offering a brighter future for the generations to come. By prioritizing financial education, supporting black women entrepreneurs, and encouraging financial institutions to be more inclusive, we can create a community that thrives economically and uplifts every member within it.

As an Entrepreneur of 10 years, I can tell you I kept myself small for far too long. You know why? Because I felt HUGE shame around the fact that I wanted more. I wasn't content with what I had, felt a pull for bigger and better things, and knew I was here to create a BIG impact in the World. Therefore, I didn't allow myself to manifest them.

As much as I thought I was doing all the right things in my business - implementing new strategies, hiring business mentors, taking on more clients - it always led me straight back to the same thing.

You AreWorthy of Wealth TheChange

It was only when I had my spiritual awakening and started to heal my traumas of my 15-year abusive relationship that I began to find my self-worth. I was able to re-build my self confidence and start stepping into my powerunapologetically.

I realized that if I wanted change, I had to change. I had to think different, feel different, BE different

None of it worked because I was focusing on the wrong things. My attention was on my business, not on myself. I did not identify as a Thought Leader. I did not feel like a successful entrepreneur. I did not feel worthy of the wealth I truly desired or capable of the impact I really wanted to make

The version of me I was then was not able to manifest the life I desired, otherwise I would have had it! I needed to become a new me, a higher version of me, a me who was not scared to shine her light

It was only then I was able to go from a 'struggling entrepreneur' on £50-£60K PA to a 'successful entrepreneur' on £350K PA, with 2 x 6 figure businesses!

SocietalShame

Society has shamed women for far too long. Ask yourself, how do you truly feel about being wealthy? Being rich? Being a Millionaire?

Does it make you cringe just even reading those words? It did me! Even though I knew I wanted those things, it was impossible to materialise them when I had deep limiting, subconscious beliefs around what those words actually meant

That I was:

a bad person superficial materialistic a snob someone who thinks they are better than

everyone else

You get the gist! I never chose these beliefs, I didn't even realize I had them, or that they were blocking me, until I started to question why I couldn't achieve the goals and dreams I had

These beliefs are formed from a poverty mindsetwhich has been passed down for generations If we want to change poverty, if we want more women to feel empowered, if we want to raise the vibration of the planet, we have to change our relationship with money

Why? Because money is a tool, money is an amplifier Money is not the enemy Money is not the root of all evil Money is not bad!

Wanting to be rich does not make you a bad person! In fact, it does the opposite - it allows you to spread your gifts further To amplify the good in your heart Good people do good things with money!

Strategies for Business Success

1. Embrace Technology

Technology has become an integral part of modern business operations, offering numerous cost-effective solutions. Invest in software and tools that streamline your processes, such as project management platforms, customer relationship management (CRM) systems, and accounting software. Automating repetitive tasks not only saves time but also reduces the risk of errors, allowing your team to focus on more valueadded activities.

3. Implement Lean Manufacturing or Operations

Adopting lean principles can lead to significant cost savings and improved efficiency. Review your production processes and identify areas where waste can be minimized, such as excess inventory, inefficient workflows, or unnecessary steps. Encourage employees to contribute ideas for process improvement and involve them in finding cost-saving measures. Lean methodologies can help streamline operations, increase productivity, and reduce expenses.

In the competitive landscape of business, it's crucial to find ways to maximize efficiency and productivity while minimizing costs As an entrepreneur or business owner, optimizing your operations on a budget becomes even more critical Fortunately, with strategic planning and smart decision-making, it is possible to achieve significant improvements without breaking the bank In this article, we will explore some key strategies for optimizing your business on a budget

2. Outsource Non-Core Functions

Consider outsourcing non-core functions of your business to specialized service providers. By doing so, you can tap into expertise and resources without the overhead costs of hiring and training additional staff. Areas like accounting / bookkeeping, IT support, marketing, and customer service can often be outsourced to external agencies or freelancers, freeing up your internal team to concentrate on core business activities.

4. Negotiate Supplier Contracts

Regularly review your supplier contracts and negotiate better terms. Consolidate your purchasing power and seek discounts or volumebased pricing. Building strong relationships with suppliers can lead to better deals and flexible payment terms. Additionally, explore alternative suppliers to ensure you're getting the best value for your money without compromising on quality.

18 / WOMEN THRIVE BUDGET
"It's crucial to find ways to maximize efficiency and productivity."

5. Optimize Marketing Efforts

Marketing is essential for business growth, but it can also be a significant expense To optimize your marketing budget, focus on targeted campaigns that reach your ideal customer base Leverage digital marketing channels like social media, search engine optimization (SEO), and content marketing, which often offer cost-effective methods to reach a broader audience Analyze the performance of your marketing campaigns to identify the most successful channels and allocate your resources accordingly

6. Prioritize Employee Development

7. Monitor and Analyze Key Metrics

Regularly track and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify areas of improvement Use data-driven insights to make informed decisions and streamline processes By closely monitoring your financials, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction, you can identify bottlenecks, cost overruns, or areas where resources can be optimized

Investing in your employee's professional growth not only enhances their skills but also boosts overall business performance However, employee development doesn't have to be expensive. Look for cost-effective training options, such as online courses, webinars, or workshops offered by industry associations. Encourage knowledge sharing within your organization by organizing lunch-and-learn sessions or cross-departmental training opportunities. By nurturing your employees' talents, you can enhance productivity and reduce turnover.

In conclusion, optimizing your business on a budget requires a strategic approach and a willingness to embrace change By leveraging technology, outsourcing non-core functions, implementing lean methodologies, negotiating supplier contracts, optimizing marketing efforts, prioritizing employee development, and monitoring key metrics, you can drive significant improvements in efficiency, productivity, and cost-effectiveness. Remember, success is not solely determined by the size of your budget but by the smart and strategic choices you make along the way.

Business Finances and Digital Marketing Strategies for Women-Led Enterprises

In today's rapidly-evolving business landscape, staying ahead of the curve is essential for success As a business owner, entrepreneur, or marketer, it's vital to keep up with effective tips, tricks, and strategies in finance and digital marketing. In this article, I will share valuable insights to help you optimize your business growth.

FINANCE
20 / WOMEN THRIVE
"As a business owner, effective budgeting is fundamental to managing your finances "

Mastering Digital Marketing Strategies

Digital marketing success relies on identifying and understanding your target audience. I suggest conducting thorough market research to develop buyer personas that represent your ideal customers. By gaining insights into their demographics, preferences, and pain points, you can tailor your marketing messages to resonate with your audience and drive engagement.

Content marketing plays a pivotal role in building brand awareness and establishing credibility. I advise you to create high-quality, valuable content that educates and entertains your target audience. By consistently producing relevant blog posts, videos, infographics, and social media content, you can position yourself as an industry authority and attract a loyal following.

Social media platforms offer a powerful medium for businesses to connect and engage with their target audience. I want to emphasize the importance of identifying the platforms where your audience is most active and tailoring your content accordingly. By sharing compelling stories, fostering conversations, and leveraging the interactive nature of social media, you can strengthen your brand presence and drive customer loyalty.

Email marketing remains a highly effective strategy for nurturing leads and driving conversions I advise you to build a permissionbased email list and craft personalized, engaging emails By delivering valuable content, exclusive offers, and timely updates, you can foster long-term relationships with your subscribers and convert them into loyal customers

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is crucial for increasing your online visibility and driving organic traffic to your website. I want to highlight the significance of optimizing your website and content for relevant keywords, improving site speed, and earning quality backlinks. By investing in SEO best practices, you can enhance your search engine rankings and attract valuable organic traffic

While organic strategies are important, paid advertising channels can provide an additional boost to your digital marketing efforts I recommend exploring platforms such as Google Ads, Facebook Ads, and LinkedIn Ads to reach a wider audience and generate leads However, I want to stress the importance of setting clear goals, monitoring campaign performance, and optimizing ad spending to maximize returns

Cultivating strong customer relationships is essential for long-term business success I encourage you to prioritize customer satisfaction and engagement By providing exceptional customer service, actively seeking feedback, and personalizing interactions, you can create a loyal customer base that advocates for your brand and drives repeat business

To continuously improve your marketing efforts, data analysis is crucial I advise you to implement robust analytics tools to track key metrics and derive actionable insights

By monitoring website traffic, conversion rates, engagement metrics, and customer behaviour, you can make data-driven decisions, refine your strategies, and optimize your marketing campaigns >>

WOMEN THRIVE / 22
" Digital marketing success relies on identifying and understanding your target audience."

Maximising Financial Returns through Digital Marketing

Digital marketing initiatives should be evaluated based on their return on investment I suggest conducting an ROI analysis to measure the effectiveness of different marketing channels and campaigns By identifying the strategies that generate the highest returns, you can allocate your resources wisely and maximize your financial outcomes

While digital marketing offers a wide array of channels, not all are equally cost-effective for every business. I advise you to conduct a cost analysis to identify the channels that yield the best results within your budget. By focusing on the most cost-effective strategies, you can optimize your marketing spend and achieve greater financial efficiency.

As your business grows, it's important to have scalable marketing strategies in place. I recommend assessing your current marketing initiatives and identifying opportunities for scalability. By leveraging automation tools, outsourcing certain tasks, and implementing processes that can accommodate growth, you can ensure that your marketing efforts align with your business expansion.

Nurturing a Growth Mindset

In the ever-changing business landscape, embracing challenges and failures is crucial for growth I encourage you to adopt a growth mindset, viewing obstacles as opportunities for learning and improvement By reframing setbacks as valuable lessons and persistently pursuing your goals, you can overcome adversity and drive long-term success

The digital marketing industry is constantly evolving, and staying updated is essential I want to emphasize the importance of continuous learning and skill development. By attending industry conferences, participating in webinars, and engaging in online courses, you can stay abreast of the latest trends, tactics, and tools in digital marketing.

Networking and collaboration play a significant role in business growth. The one thing that people will pay you thousands for Your leadership is honestly the one thing that people will pay you thousands for

Why? Because you are unique, you have a voice worth listening to, and your expertise, experiences and knowledge will change people’s lives! But you can only do this if you lead! Too many people are copying and doing the same thing as everyone else in their niche or business focus Therefore, start leading more with your voice, your vision, your values and your opinions Once you start to do that, people’s heads will turn and they will start to notice you, engage with you - and pay you!

Leadership

The One Thing People Will Pay You Thousands For

Take your own investments as an example Did you invest in a person or program because of the person, their energy and their leadership, or because of what the program included?

When I first started showing up online for my business, I was convinced that I would only be successful if I showed my face every day and followed the latest reel trends because that’s what I saw the majority of coaches and business owners doing

But here’s the thing I soon learned that copying what everyone else was doing wasn’t actually going to make me more successful nor get me clients or sales

It takes a lot of confidence and audacity to really stand up or show up and share with the world your values, beliefs and opinions But once you do, you can then start be seen as a leader! Authenticity is key in this game If you are not truly authentic to yourself, people will soon see right through you and will not be able to build authentic connections which will help you with signing more clients or making more sales

LEADERSHIP 24 / WOMEN THRIVE

What do you want to share with the world?

What value can you offer your audience to change their lives?

So how can you be seen or represented as a true leader? Firstly think about these questions: 1 2 3

How can you make a positive impact?

Once you have this clarity, it will soon make showing up authentically easier and you will soon start to attract your dream clients or customers because you are being ‘you’!

When you step into the version of yourself that is where you want to be, you start to act, talk and walk like a leader Have the audacity to show up as that leader! Be bold, confident and daring with your opinions and thoughts and share these with the world

Your ideal clients will resonate with what you say and will start to see you as a leader rather than just another coach or business owner in the online space.

Here are my 3 pieces of advice to be seen as a true leader and become a magnet to your dream clients or customers:

Become that 6-figure or 7-figure CEO that you truly desire to be. When you step into her shoes, you will move, act and talk like her which will support you with your confidence and attract your ideal clients or customers.

Create content focusing on leadership! Try to avoid the inspirational quotes and affirmations and really focus on content that is going to stop the scroll and stand out!

Lead your audience with a movement! Create something so iconic that people are obsessed with your branding, your content, your stories, and ‘you’.

Remember that there is a true leader inside of you, so let her out and share with the world what is possible because you are unstoppable!

Mastering the Art of Financial

Financial empowerment is a massive aspect of personal growth and well-being. It involves taking control of your finances, making informed decisions, and building a solid foundation to a secure future.

As a money strategist for female entrepreneurs, with 15 years’ worth of experience working in the financial industry, I know what you need to do to take your business and life to the next level, this being the level you want it to be, to live the life you really want to be living.

With 1 in 3 women still financially dependent, it is so important that, now more than ever before, we take the steps to really gain financial independence.

A recent article in the Rose Report, which you can see by clicking here, states that in the next few years, they believe 75% of businesses will be run by women-led businesses.

This is fantastic and yet we are still so far behind in achieving true financial equality. As stated in the United Nations article, which you can view here, it will actually take over 250 years to close the gender pay gap. As women, we need to change this, understand your finances, and take that control today

I’m going to discuss in this article, essential strategies to help you master the art of financial empowerment, helping you to achieve your own financial freedom

By implementing these strategies, you can gain control over your money, achieve financial stability, and create opportunities for long-term success

EMPOWERMENT 26 / WOMEN THRIVE

You need to start by setting clear financial goals, defining short and long-term goals A shortterm goal might be taking your family on a fancy holiday, whereas a long-term goal might be to buy a house or clear your mortgage These goals are individual and usually are not the same between two people – remember, we are all unique and have different goals in life!

Prioritise these goals on importance and how feasible they are Don’t set yourself unrealistic goals or you are setting yourself up for those mind monkeys to come knocking You need realistic timeframes, something that is achievable

You’ll then create the most important part of financial empowerment and gaining financial independence! A budget Yes, a budget is one of the most important steps in any plan No, it is not a diet – do not worry I am not going to tell you to cut out all those wonderful things you enjoy, that make life fun After all, we must enjoy life.

But your budget does need to be in alignment with your goals. Build it up around how you want life to look and make sure you know how your money is working for you, looking at it regularly to really stay in control. In my podcast, Financially Savvy, I go into depth about the importance of a budget. You can listen by clicking here.

Building strong financial foundations is another key aspect to financial empowerment You need an emergency fund to cover unexpected expenses

An emergency fund is a brilliant tool to create true financial freedom Having a pot of money there to enable you to make those choices you want to, without having to panic!

Want to leave an employed role? Get an emergency fund together to give you the means to live for a few months whilst you pursue your passion without the worry

Boiler needs replacing? Use your emergency fund to pay for this to prevent the use of a credit card or loan

Using your budget to plan paying off debt, creating strategies to be able to invest and create future wealth, enabling you to enjoy retirement and potentially create generational wealth.

On this journey you will need to dive into your money mindset. Really understanding your spending habits and where they start from.

The psychology of money is extremely fascinating and the way we treat our finances are a direct impact from childhood and growing up. Things we have learnt, heard, been told, and read, all influence the way we treat money.

Becoming financially empowered is a journey, one you can start today and a crucial step to gaining financial freedom.

It requires discipline, dedication, and continuous learning. But by setting clear goals, building a strong financial foundation, protecting your financial wellbeing, and cultivating healthy spending habits by diving into your money mindset, you really can take charge of your financial future.

The advice I give clients who are al Solopreneur busin mixture of servic product based, is Black Friday/Boxin a way to give back ‘thank you’ to your customers. These h are dominated by the big businesses such as Amazon, so rather than try and compete with crazy low prices, create an offer that serves as a ‘thank you’ to your current and previous customers; they already have trust in you and are more likely to buy again so curate a ‘sale’ offer that works for them and market the offer to them. You will naturally bring in new customers as your authentic intentions will shine through.

What

advice would you give a 2-5 year business owner regarding a Black Friday / Boxing Day promotion?

As a Business Coach for women wellness entrepreneurs, my advice around black Friday is to repurpose what you already you have in your wheel house into a bundle. People love bundles Especially when it is discounted by 50% or more So ask people in your community what they most want support with, then put together a bundle at an EASY YES price for them. It's proven that once someone buys from you, they are likely to buy again.

From a design and creative perspective, keep your branding visible at all times. When choosing templates on Canva, go for templates that align with your current branding. If you have had your templates designed for you and you edit them in Canva, also keep to the aesthetic your designer has created. For example using the same fonts, images, colors, patterns etc. Also, think about different mediums, such as video, animation, to get added attention. Again, Canva has some good options (free and paid for) Apps like CapCut for TikTok have really fun video templates. If you're lucky to have a designer on hand, get them to do animated ads. Don't forget your website and email marketing. Put banners usually within the header section, so it's the first thing buyers see. Pops ups with discounts etc Have a featured product above the fold of your website and an attentiongrabbing call to action. Packaging your products is also important for promotional 'holidays'. Think about creating 'Thank You' cards or an extra small gift. Or even reusable wrapping paper. Anything that connects your brand and its messaging.

Night Blues Sunday

The ‘Dread’ Do you get that feeling in the pit of your stomach on a Sunday? Do you want the weekend to last forever?

Some people feel dread, and others try to avoid thinking about work by keeping very busy. It is different for everyone. It is not necessarily just the evening time either - The Sun-DAY Blues also exist for some.

What we know is that the Sunday Night Blues are very common, and it does impact mental health and well-being for many. If anything, the post-Covid era has encouraged organizations to seriously consider employee well-being - both from a legal and ethical perspective.

The hybrid model of working has also impacted The Sunday Night Blues, as the boundaries between work and home life have been blurred beyond recognition. The temptation to work over the weekend to prevent the Sunday anxiety can spiral into a cycle of safety behaviors (things we do to ease feelings of anxiety in the short term) which can then impact family life You may find it difficult to ‘switch off’ from work, check emails on your phone, and try to ‘catch up’ before Monday

There is currently some fascinating research being led by Ilke Inceoglu, Professor of Organisational Behaviour and HR Management at the University of Exeter Business School This study is also being conducted in conjunction with Channel 4 and Investors in People Read more here So now we know that the Sunday Night Blues exist, as backed by evidence, how do we manage them?

“Some people feel dread, and others try to avoid thinking about work by keeping very busy.”

1.) Acknowledge Your Feelings

For any stressful situation, we benefit from acknowledging our feelings, by noticing them and naming them When we try to ignore our feelings, they actually grow bigger no matter how we try to deny them See also the Beach Ball Analogy

You can acknowledge your feelings by:

Saying them to yourself - ‘I feel anxious’ or, ‘I feel worried about work tomorrow ’

You can write them down - this can be really powerful and help people to process their feelings You can use the notes section on your phone or grab a notebook

Tell a friend, loved one, or a colleague

Stress management techniques:

Diaphragmatic Breathing

This is scientifically proven to put the ‘brakes’ on the sympathetic nervous system and return our body to calm

1 )Take a deep breath in through your nose for 4 seconds and feel your abdomen expand as it fills with air

2.) Hold your breath for around 3 seconds.

2.) Responding to the Stress

Stress really impacts our body and mind Our innate stress response has evolved from thousands of years of trying to keep safe when living in the wilderness So, in our modern world, our response to anything we perceive as a threat can feel like an overreaction

When we feel threatened, our body has a strong physiological response, commonly known as ‘fight or flight’, though that theory has now been further developed to include ‘freeze and fawn’ in relation to trauma research This is when we have a surge of stress hormones (cortisol and adrenaline) that kickstart our sympathetic nervous system

Examples of common stress response symptoms:

Racing heart

Sweat

Racing thoughts

Needing the toilet

Tight muscles

Blood pressure rising

This list is not exhaustive.

3.) This part is KEY - breathe out SLOWLY over 6 seconds - you might make a ‘whoosh’ sound as you let the air out. This method is most effective when your exhale is longer than your inhale.

Progressive Muscle Relaxation

A technique that tenses and relaxes the muscles in your body from head to toe. There are many great videos and scripts available online.

Grounding Exercises

The classic 5,4,3,2,1 exercise can be really defective for people. I often encourage clients to create a grounding box for themselves at home. This exercise requires you to focus on:

5 things you can see

4 things you can touch

3 things you can hear

2 things you can smell

1 thing you can taste

Try these exercises out, and see what feels most effective for you. The key is to practice them when you feel RELAXED, so they are not only associated with stress and panic. For further tips on managing work anxiety, learn more here.

WOMEN THRIVE / 31
“When we feel threatened, our body has a strong physiological response, commonly known as ‘fight or flight’.”

3.) Practical Steps

The ongoing research by University of Exeter Business School has highlighted some recommendations so far:

Plan a nice activity for Sunday evening

Be disciplined about any work you do over the weekend

Plan a nice activity at work on Monday

There are also steps that organizations can take, such as asking their teams about how to best structure the week (meeting times etc), good wellbeing role modeling by managers, and investing in well-being training for managers

Your Plan

Now you know a little more about the Sunday Night Blues, you can take a few minutes to think about what you are going to do differently if you feel affected

How will you acknowledge your feelings?

How will you manage your stress?

What practical steps can you take toward the Sunday Night Blues?

Every step is important, and it can take time to work out what works best for you - and that is okay. Taking care of ourselves is key - and by reading this you are already on the right path.

Insights

This month’s theme is Planning Your Finances for the Holidays, but how do you go about creating a budget that you can stick to but is also realistic? Here are some essential budgeting tips that will help you take charge of your money and secure a stable financial future

Planning Your Finances

Track Your Expenses

Where is your money going? Do you have a clear picture of where your money is going and what your spending habits are? One way to start tracking is to categorize into essential expenses (rent, utilities, groceries) versus non-essential expenses (dining out, entertainment)

Set Financial Goals

Clearly define your short and long-term financial goals. Whether it’s paying off debt, saving for an investment, or planning for vacation, having specific goals will motivate you to stick to your budget. Consider using a budget app to help you track and manage your goals With discipline and determination, budgeting can pave the way for a brighter and more stable financial future

Create a Realistic Budget

Once you’ve categorized your expenses, start allocating funds for each category. For example, your rent is $800 a month, so you need at least $800 in income to cover that cost. See where you can start to cut costs with your non-essential expenses. If you’ve not watched a streaming platform in three months, do you still need to be paying for it? When your income comes in, aim to save at least 10-20% of your income regularly for your emergency fund, as well as ensuring you’ve met your financial goals and are able to live within your means.

Budget Example:

Monthly Income: $3,000 10% into Savings - $300

Essential Monthly Expenses - $2,060

Mortgage: $1,000

Utilities: $300

Groceries: $200

Cell Phone: $100

Insurance: $60

Car: $100

Clothing / Other Needs: $300

Income ($3,000) - 10% Savings ($300) - Essential Expenses ($2,060) = $640 for non-essential monthly expenses

"When your income comes in, aim to save at least 10-20% of your income regularly."

The Dance of Success

Choreographing with the OTP Framework

Picture a grand ballet performance - each dancer moving with grace and precision, a harmony of artistry and discipline A beautiful ballet doesn't just happen by chance; it’s the result of countless hours of rehearsal, careful choreography, and the guiding hand of a passionate ballet master Now, think of your business as this grand ballet, with you, the entrepreneur, as its master Your operational plan is the choreography that ensures each part of your business moves in sync to create a beautiful performance Tools like the Operational Tipping Point® (OTP) Framework can serve as your guiding notes in this dance

Understanding the Beauty and Complexity of Business Operations

Think of business operations as the heartbeat of your enterprise - steady, resilient, and vital. They are the day-to-day tasks and strategies that keep your business alive and thriving. When nurtured with care and precision, these operations can streamline efficiency, cut costs, and keep your customers coming back for more, much like an encore after an unforgettable performance. However, crafting this operational symphony isn't an effortless twirl. It calls for a careful composition of various melodiessetting the right goals, assembling a dedicated team, fostering strong leadership, and establishing meaningful performance metrics. It's about striking the perfect balance between the immediate and the future, the employees and the customers, and efficiency and cost.

The Power of the Choreography: Strategic Planning

Just as a ballet evolves with every performance, your business also grows and changes over time. The steps that were perfect at the start may not serve your dance as it grows more complex and layered. It's critical to reassess and redesign your choreography continually, to align with your evolving vision. This, dear entrepreneur, is where the beauty of strategic planning shines. Strategic planning empowers you to look ahead, to anticipate the moves before you make them. It helps you spot areas that need improvement, identify risks, and seize opportunities. More importantly, it provides a choreographed sequence that aligns your operational dance with your business's vision and goals.

The Magic of the Operational Tipping Point® Framework

A shining example of strategic planning in the entrepreneurial world is the Operational Tipping Point® (OTP) Framework This framework, designed by the consulting agency Jane de Vos Latchgate Services Ltd , is a valuable tool that can guide businesses through their growth journey and optimize their operational choreography

The OTP Framework gracefully leads businesses through four crucial stages: Start-Up, Scale, Sustain, and Strategic Exit Each stage represents a different part of your business ballet, each with its unique challenges and opportunities This framework serves as your choreographer, helping you overcome hurdles and stay aligned with your strategic vision

However, the potency of the OTP Framework, or any strategic planning tool, lies in its application. As a passionate entrepreneur, it's essential to embody these strategies within your operations, fostering a culture of continual learning and improvement.

Facing the Future with Grace: Planning for 2024

As we twirl towards 2024, it's more critical than ever to have solid operational choreography in place The world of business is a constantly changing stage, and only those dancers with a well-practiced plan can navigate these changes and deliver a standout performance

In this context, working with an Operations Expert can be a game-changer While you focus on passionately leading your business, an Operations Expert fine-tunes your choreography, ensuring that every step, every leap, and every twirl contributes to your success

The Encore

The journey to success isn't merely about having a great product or service It's about the intricate ballet of operations performed behind the scenes. It's about how well you, the entrepreneur, can choreograph your daily tasks to resonate with your long-term vision. With astute strategic planning and operational optimization, your business can leap toward growth and profitability. Tools like the OTP Framework serve as your dance guide, providing you with a roadmap to navigate your operational challenges. Remember, the magic of success is woven behind the scenes. It's created in the careful dance of operations. So, my dear entrepreneur, make every step, every decision, and every strategy count in your business journey success.

The Catalyst for Authenticity in Your Career

Creating a Safe Place

How many times have you been told you’re too much? Been talked over in a meeting? Or outright passed over for a career move that you were 1000% qualified for, because you were born a woman?

If you are like me, it happened more times than you would like to remember or admit. I started my career in corporate healthcare. It had so many policies, rules, and guidelines for how I could show up at work. I was told I could only have 1 ear piercing. I was instructed to keep a makeup bag and blazer at my desk because I was not allowed to walk into a conference room without a full face of makeup on. I was expected to leave my personal life at the door. And when passed up for well-deserved promotions, I was “mentored” to leave the company to get additional experience and then

try and come back later after already giving them 6 years of my life

My professional career was built on showing up inauthentically That was ingrained in me And the people pleaser in me accepted all of it because I knew I was destined to make an impact, so I was willing to listen to how to play the game It wasn’t until my life took a drastic turn after my son’s passing that I decided no more! Life is way too short to go through it, day in and day out, not being myself This is when I learned about psychological safety as my tool to show up authentically As shared by Harvard Business Review, “Team psychological safety is a shared belief held by members of a team that it’s OK to take risks, to express their ideas and concerns, to speak up with questions, and to admit mistakes all without fear of

negative consequences ” That sounded exactly like what I was desperate for.

I needed work to be a safe place more than ever after my leave. I needed it to be my escape from home. I needed to be able to show up raw, unfiltered, and not have it all together. So I decided to really dive deeper into psychological safety. I found myself in a position where I led a team that I did not directly manage, and it was the perfect place to try.

I have since followed these 4 steps with most of my clients and teams. It has drastically changed the way we show up and work together. I now show up unapologetically as myself, and I wouldn’t have it any other way! If you still haven’t found your safe place in your career, model these 5 steps and magically watch your work environment transform in front of you.

CAREER 36 / WOMEN THRIVE
"My professional career was built on showing up inauthentically."

1 / Set the tone for yourself

The way you “should be” acting in a professional capacity is all made up in your own head It is likely created from past experiences, what mentors have told you, or how you have seen behavior modeled in professional settings Take the self-reflection time to decide how you want to show up in your professional setting and begin modeling that behavior This allows the change to be progressive versus a jarring all-or-nothing feeling And as you continue to model that behavior, your team will pick that up and begin to feel safe to do the same

3 / Openly talk about what your dream team dynamics are

Continuing the “this is how we do it here” mentality. Who decided that was how it was done in the past? Why did they decide that? When was that last revisited? Spoiler alert - for the majority of my clients they can hardly even answer those questions because they likely weren’t even a part of those decisions.

There is a place for tradition! For instance, our family does trips instead of presents That is a tradition I hope to see continue for as long as I am a part of the family leadership team But when I pass off my seat at the table, my kids will need to make their own traditions that are in better alignment with the life they are actively building But you know how that tradition came to be? We sat down and talked about what everyone enjoys, dislikes, or is passionate about It was a team decision on how we were going to work together

So I supercharged this for my work team by creating a new ceremony, called a Futurespective (Learn the details here) Since watching repeated positive changes happen, Futurespectives rose to the top of my tools for teams And it creates such positive change, that I encourage them to revisit anytime team dynamics change We openly talk about how each person gets their best work done, what level of support is important to them, how they want to be communicated with, etc

2 / Accept who people are, for who they really are

I never understood the common practice of new team members having to mold themselves into the current dynamic of the team. That’s like saying you are going to bring a new puppy or baby into your family team and expect that nothing changes. I don’t know about you but, as a mom of 4, I have yet to experience bringing home a new baby, telling them the schedule of the house, and finding that they fall right in line without any disruption. Now as adults, we hopefully have more self-control, but each person on the team brings a new perspective, personality, and past experiences. Appreciate that. Celebrate that. Be proud that you all collectively are different and make a more well-rounded team!

Sometimes the answers are as silly as “I am not a fully functioning human being before 10am” to as personal as “I need to take the week off during my son’s birthday because I take sabbatical time to grieve” And though we don’t have policies and procedures to write up from these answers, we know a lot

1 - Team Member 1 - We are not getting value from this person when we keep scheduling 7:30am meetings In fact, we’re doing the opposite and driving them to hate showing up for this place every day So let’s allow them to block their calendar in the morning and work flex hours

2 - Team Member 2 - The PTO request here is of course a yes because we know that allows them to show up fully any other time, and we as a team should help make sure their plate is light enough leading up to that week so they can actually take a sabbatical without worrying about here. >>

WOMEN THRIVE / 37

4 / Operate by the definition of agile

Now if I only had a $1 from every one of you who just rolled your eyes at the word Agile because you have seen it butchered and abused and know it hasn’t really made an impact, I would be in Greece already! But hang in there with me (or email me and we can chat all day about it because as a Product Process Improvement Specialist, I am with ya and try to help teams break free of that every day ) I don’t mean be Agile in the way your company has adapted to its own version of it I mean by the definition of the word agile: able to move quickly and easily Meaning the team has a shared mindset of being open to each other and continually improving, so that there is no idea immediately off the table This really means never be so married to how it has always been done that you judge any chance of change before you have even considered it

I would be remiss for sharing these steps with you knowing there are some career environments that are not willing to transition into a safe place There were environments I have chosen to remove myself from because I so deeply believe in the power of psychological safety If you are not given that safe place, it’s time for some self-reflection to find out if where you are is in alignment with where (and who) you want to be.

I will leave you with the most tactical way I can tell you to implement this in your world, with my favorite quote from my business partner, Jackie Flake: “Be okay with failure. From failure comes learnings. From learnings comes change.”

Sexual Harassment Training is Failing Women

As professional women, we hear the same workplace statistics regularly. While the numbers vary slightly, the conclusions are consistent: women make 83% of what our male peers make, we don’t negotiate enough, and 1 out of 3 of us will experience sexual harassment at work. There is continued discussion on how we can be a part of closing the wage gap and how we can adopt improved negotiation tactics. However, conversations on sexual harassment at work are generally ostracized to an organization's HR portal or in venting sessions over drinks with our girlfriends.

While most organizations require employees to “attend,” (often virtually), annual sexual harassment training, their effectiveness leaves something to be desired Employers are measuring the impact of these trainings using organizationally-important benchmarks, instead of ones that matter to employees According to glaxdiversitycouncil com, employers measure effectiveness in categories like, “Trainee reactions, increased motivation and learning outcomes, the transfer of knowledge and skills to the workplace, return on the investment (ROI) in training, and its impact on organizational performance ”

Based on this list, there is a gaping hole in the system Employers are not considering how to equip women for the eventuality that many of us will experience sexual harassment at work, despite mandatory training

Status Quo Shortcomings

Here are some ways sexual harassment training needs to level up for women:

Preparation over prevention

If we step outside the context of a workplace, we think of the word “training” as another word for practice But most workplace sexual harassment training does not include practicing how we might react if we’ve been verbally or physically harassed You may argue that we can never truly be ready to be propositioned with sex or touched inappropriately at work I agree, practice won’t make perfect, but it can make progress Role-playing in safe, intentional spaces can strengthen and develop our ability to react in a way we find ideal for our personalities and comfort zones

If sexual harassment training asks women the difficult and uncomfortable question of, “What would you do if [situation x] happened to you?” we can thoughtfully address our options for in-the-moment reactions Of course, there is no correct response or reaction to sexual harassment, but there is a right reaction for you Often survivors aren’t able to access that right response in the moment harassment occurs, due to shock and intimidation. Actual practice for moments of sexual harassment won’t prevent it, but it can most definitely help us to align our immediate responses with our values, which will improve mental health outcomes for survivors.

Address mental-health challenges

Survivors of workplace sexual harassment often experience a predictable range of emotions directly after an event, and standard workplace training rarely addresses it The cycle often begins with shock Next can come embarrassment and shame, especially if the event happened in front of your peers As time goes on, anger and sadness can show up That anger can range from misplaced anger at ourselves, to anger at your harasser, and even macro-anger at the systems that allow these issues to continue Current training methods do nothing to acknowledge or prepare women for these strong feelings

Tackle tough choices

As mentioned in the Many Things Blog article, Impossible Choices, when women experience sexual harassment at work, they can be faced with several lose-lose decisions, including whether to disclose, to whom to disclose, and whether they seek assistance from the employer or private therapy resources. One of the toughest choices survivors can encounter, however inappropriate it may be, is how or if the coworker who harassed her will be punished.

Smaller, less experienced organizations often fall into the awkward and excruciating practice of asking the survivor how they want to “handle the situation”. This type of perceived flexibility and compassion may seem like a kind thing to offer the survivor. However, the pressure of deciding the fate of their harasser’s job or other workrelated factors is an unfair one to put on someone going through this type of trauma… and it is trauma.

Offer trigger warnings for survivors

Common workplace training courses can depict experiences that hit too close to home for those of us who have been involved in sexual harassment. Preparing staff, before the training, to handle triggers is important. Overall, a trauma-informed approach will allow employers to fully understand the impact of their training on survivors.

Non-traditional alternatives

Given the legal and cultural consequences employers may face if they were to adjust their training formats to include harassment preparedness, chances seem low they would make a shift in that direction So how do women provide each other with the groundwork for a healthier response to potential sexual harassment?

First, we must demand our own education Start a conversation with leaders in your organization about what you think is missing from your company’s training, especially from a mental health perspective

Next, we may need to look to alternative sources to provide solutions Instead of depending on employers who may not have a stake in pivoting, ask women’s associations and professional development groups to take on the task of preparedness training Vulnerability and outside-the-box conversations are generally more accepted in these spaces

Lastly, workplaces need to transition away from pretending we’re training each other to not harass, and move towards admitting sexual harassment has remained a problem at work and begin to prepare women for when (most likely, not if) it happens to them

In a world where analytical thinking and logic often take center stage, the innate power of intuition often gets overlooked But for women, intuition is a formidable force, a deep well of wisdom and insight, that can guide them towards success and fulfillment By tapping into their intuition, women can step out with confidence, trusting their instincts to make empowered decisions In this article, we will explore the significance of intuition, and its unique connection to women, and provide practical tips on how to cultivate and trust your intuition to thrive in all aspects of life

EmbraceYourIntuition

Keys to Step Out with Confidence, Women!

Key 1 - Honor the Power of Your Intuition Intuition is the profound ability to understand or know something without conscious reasoning. It is an inner knowing that transcends logical analysis, drawing upon our accumulated experiences, emotions, and unconscious awareness.

Bruce Kasanoff calls it the highest form of intelligence. In an article about Gerd Gigerenzera, director at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, talks about using his intuition and his intellect to create a higher form of intelligence. This is what I refer to as our intuitive genius. It’s about tapping into our intuitive insights and then making them real with our intellect, experiences, and emotions.

As women, we have a unique connection to this powerful intuitive faculty, which is often referred to as our "women's intuition" or "gut feeling" It is a gift that has been passed down through generations, allowing us to navigate the world with a heightened sense of empathy, sensitivity, and perception

Key 2 - Cultivate Your Intuition

Nurturing your intuition is crucial to unlocking its full potential. Start by creating space for quiet reflection and self-awareness. Engage in practices such as meditation, journaling, or mindfulness to deepen your connection with your inner self. You can check out this article by Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health for more mindful strategies to being more in tune with your Intuition.

Trusting your intuition requires tuning into the subtle signals and sensations that arise within you. By learning to recognise and honor these sensations, you can cultivate a stronger sense of intuition over time.

Key 3 - Listen to Your Intuition

In today’s busy environment, one of the key ingredients for cultivating your intuition is to slow down and become aware of the present moment This is when we create the conditions to receive the intuitive insight Trusting your intuition requires developing the ability to listen and act upon its guidance Often, we secondguess ourselves or dismiss our intuitive insights due to societal conditioning, or fear of being perceived as irrational However, by embracing our intuition, we can make better decisions aligned with our true selves

Practice active listening to your intuition pay attention to the physical sensations, emotions, and subtle nudges that arise when faced with choices Your intuition will guide you towards the path that resonates with your authentic desires and values We always suggest starting small Experiment with the little nudges and build your confidence to recognise your intuition in the moments that are life-changing.

Key 5 - Celebrating Intuitive Success Stories

Throughout history, numerous successful women have relied on their intuition to achieve remarkable feats. From groundbreaking scientists to visionary artists, many trailblazers credit their intuition as a guiding force in their achievements. Hortense le Gentil says the best leaders use the power of their intuition. Seek inspiration from these stories and understand that your intuition is an inherent part of who you are. By celebrating the successes of women who have trusted their intuition, you empower yourself to do the same. Take a moment to celebrate the success of trusting your own intuition, no matter how big or small the outcomes are

Key 4 - Embrace the Risk of the Unknown and Move Though Self Doubt

Stepping out with confidence means embracing risks and moving through self-doubt Your intuition can be your greatest ally in these moments of uncertainty It sees beyond the limitations of the rational mind and offers unique perspectives and insights When faced with challenges or decisions, ask yourself: "What does my intuition tell me?”

This is when slowing down and becoming present at the moment is crucial Allow your intuitive wisdom to guide you, even if it means taking a leap into the unknown Remember, intuition does not mean everything will always be rosy, in fact, we need to come to the place where we embrace the challenges, and what they ultimately bring to us Our intuition often leads us to opportunities for growth and transformation

In conclusion, let me say to all the incredible women out there, your intuition is a powerful tool that can guide you toward a life of confidence and fulfillment. By embracing and trusting your intuition, you tap into a wellspring of wisdom and insight that is uniquely yours. Cultivate your intuition, listen to its whispers, and have faith in its guidance. Step out with confidence, knowing that your intuition is a beacon of light that will lead you toward your truest, most authentic self.

Iwas sitting at my mentor’s home one evening, sobbing over the latest happenings in my abusive relationship, when she said something to me that changed my life forever.

“I’m about to say something that you’re not going to like,” she started. “But, it’s not for now. Tuck it away and bring it back out when you’re ready, because it’s vitally important to your future. You’ve been in several abusive relationships and YOU are the common denominator. You need to figure out why, learn from these relationships, and avoid them in the future. Then you need to share what you learn with the world.”

I felt hurt, offended, confused, even a little angry. But I trusted her. If she gave me this advice, it was because she knew that only by being brutally honest could she help me in the long run.

Fast forward a few years and I did revisit this advice, taking the time I needed to grapple with the answers and implications. What I discovered allowed me to find mental and emotional healing. Now, it’s time to share what I learned with the world so here are the 6 things I learned from my abusive relationships.

6ThingsI Learnedfrom MyAbusive Relationships

1 / It’s not your fault but you’re the common denominator

If you’ve found yourself in multiple abusive relationships, the cycle can seem endless. This isn’t your fault!! You didn’t make anyone abuse you. But it's important to understand why it keeps happening. Take time to dig in and reflect on your past experiences, choices, and traumas. The choices that may seem stupid were not for naught if you choose to learn and grow from them. And don’t feel ashamed, guilty or weak if you need to seek professional help to work through these difficult things. Sometimes it’s the best way to navigate challenging situations.

2 / Abusers gonna abuse

After experiencing several abusive relationships I was shocked to realize that abusers have a pattern of abusive behaviorit’s what they do. They often don't even realize they're being abusive; they see it as normal and may even blame you. While this doesn't excuse their behavior, it highlights their refusal to acknowledge their actions whether that be by choice or by ignorance.

3 / Your life will not improve until you get out and break the cycle

You may not see a way out of your situation right now But there is always a way Understand that your life will not improve if you stay in abusive relationships You must take action and break the cycle How this happens depends on the nature of the relationship and the level and extent of the abuse Again, don’t be afraid to seek help If the relationship doesn’t change, your life will not improve And you deserve a life of happiness and freedom from abuse, not misery and fear

4 / To avoid a return, upgrade your relationship with yourself

In case no one has told you - YOU are important YOU matter YOU deserve to be happy and have a wonderful, fulfilled life, despite what your abuser(s) may have told you Once you realize this, you’ve taken the first step toward freedom and recovery! Take the time to work on yourself and process your own trauma

Learn to love yourself and, when you do, you’ll be able to establish boundaries and standards that will protect you from entering future abusive relationships Your relationship with yourself is the single most important relationship you will ever have! Nurture it!

WOMEN THRIVE / 49
" If the relationship doesn’t change, your life will not improve. And you deserve a life of happiness."

5 / Abuse comes in many forms

When we hear the word “abuse”, our minds seem to automatically think sexual or physical But we mustn’t forget mental, emotional, verbal, and even spiritual abuse These are detrimental and destructive in their own ways and they can also be a lot more covert What starts out as a snide remark can quickly turn into gaslighting, and a complete tearing down of who you are as a person If someone repeatedly tells you how stupid you are, do NOT convince yourself that’s ok It’s abuse!

6 / Their unresolved childhood trauma is not your fault or your problem

Childhood trauma can impact people in different ways throughout their lives. It can affect their physical health, leading to various health issues, or manifest as chronic anxiety and depression, impacting their mental well-being. Additionally, some individuals who have been abused may exhibit abusive behavior themselves because this is what they consider "normal"

It's important to recognize that their past trauma is not your responsibility or burden to carry As adults, ultimately, we are responsible for our own behavior While understanding their past may provide context, you cannot change someone who is unwilling to acknowledge their behavior It's crucial to remember that their behavior is not acceptable, even if they’ve experienced difficult circumstances

It’s been said that hurt people hurt people People can get stuck in their hurt If they don’t process or heal from it, they can stay frozen in that moment in time when they were hurt and they react to others the way they would have liked to react in that abusive situation

While we want to have empathy and compassion for people with traumatic pasts, you deserve better than to tolerate abuse from anyone I hope these 6 lessons I learned help you to recognize and remove yourself from abusive relationships, or steer you away from potentially bad situations - because it’s vitally important to your future
