Ways to Build Gender Equity at Work

06 / WOMEN THRIVE
"When companies commit themselves to diverse leadership, they are more successful."
SPECIAL
Lydia Rueger Shoaf

Equity, in its simplest terms, means meeting communities where they are and allocating resources and opportunities as needed to create equal outcomes for all community members, according to an article from The United Way Building gender equity specifically in a workplace is essential so that employees with a diverse range of experiences can contribute their unique gifts to company outcomes And research from McKinsey & Company shows that when companies commit themselves to diverse leadership, they are more successful

Leaders at Friendship Bridge, a Colorado-based nonprofit that helps impoverished women in Guatemala grow their businesses, understand this need They’ve also faced unique challenges in building gender equity for their Guatemalan staff, given the country’s rating as the most genderunequal country in Latin America, according to the Global Gender Gap Report 2022

Hire employees that reflect who you serve. Regardless of the population your company serves, hiring for cultural fit is known to improve employee satisfaction, engagement, productivity, and retention, according to Business News Daily

One way Friendship Bridge does this is by intentionally hiring employees who have similar backgrounds as its clients - in this case, indigenous Maya women from rural, impoverished areas - which has yielded “increased empathy, increased cultural competency, and the ability to leverage our networks to make our services more impactful for both clients and employees,” says Chief Strategy Officer Caitlin Scott “In order to serve [clients] well, [build] a workforce that reflects your population ”

To show they are serious about this, Friendship Bridge offers an extensive, twomonth employee training program that goes beyond job responsibilities New employees are also taught how to interact professionally, trained in the technology needed for the job (rather than expecting them to already know it), then given time to practice what they’ve learned in the field. Friendship Bridge also partners with the MAIA Impact School, which exclusively educates rural, indigenous young women, to apply for internships and, afterward, full-time jobs.

Think of how you can take this example and implement it in your own business. Are there ways you can offer a training program or help develop your team? Maybe there are strategic collaborations you can adopt so that you can further the relationship you have with your team as well as with other organizations. >>

WOMEN THRIVE / 07
"Hiring for cultural fit is known to improve employee satisfaction, engagement, productivity and retention."

Enact company benefits that encourage gender equity.

Think about what might hinder both women and men to apply for certain positions in equal numbers. What policy or employee benefit might help change that? Friendship Bridge did this by offering motorcycle loans and motorcycle driving lessons to women. Since the ability to ride a motorcycle was a job requirement for certain positions - in order to reach clients living on unpaved roads with challenging terrain - few women applied. Adding these benefits allowed more women to feel comfortable riding in rural areas, and thus feel comfortable applying for such jobs. Reflect on any company policies you currently have that may hinder someone from applying These can range from what the example showed, but really consider who you want to be in your workforce and how you can ease their access

Encourage participation in decisionmaking.

When employees are given opportunities to participate in decision-making, self-confidence increases as they gain mastery in their jobs

Employees begin to participate more in projects outside of their departments, which often translates to becoming leaders, as well as being more receptive to ways they might improve

One way to do this is to standardize participation through performance evaluations, which are filled out not only by managers but also by colleagues In addition, include participation as one of your company’s corporate values so it continues to be practiced; allow employees to decide how they will achieve their performance objectives

Be aware of employees’ personal needs. When employees know that you care about their personal life and institute work policies that can help them be more productive, increased trust and more open communication soon follow By showing employees that you are actively aware of their needs, you will help build an environment of trust and loyalty

When you show your team that you care, they will take that to heart and want to stay with the team longer, advance into new opportunities, and may become your next business partner

Think of how you can become more aware of your team’s needs and how you can implement a system to care for those needs Of course, there are boundaries that should be set up, but there are many ways you can create incentives around personal needs For example, paying for a commuting pass, gym membership, meal planning service, etc These are incentives as well as showing concern for their personal wellbeing

SPECIAL FEATURE 08 / WOMEN THRIVE
"By showingemployees that you are actively aware of their needs, you will help build an environment of trust and loyalty."

Give employees opportunities for advancement.

A healthy organizational culture of gender equity develops when managers point out employees’ capabilities and encourage them to apply for new roles, even when they don’t yet see those capabilities themselves

Carmen G , a Friendship Bridge employee for 15 years and current branch manager, said she wasn’t necessarily looking for leadership opportunities when she started Managers noticed her skills and encouraged her to apply f or promotions, but she was reluctant to say “yes” due to family commitments

Her managers persisted anyway, and that has made all the difference “I was afraid to take on such a big challenge I doubted it so many times,”

Carmen remembers She now reports experiencing personal and professional growth, she just needed a nudge to get there: “All the knowledge I’ve acquired has allowed me to be a very empowered woman so I can empower more women in Guatemala ”

My colleague in Guatemala, Indira M, is an inspiration to me and shows that, when given the opportunity, women can do amazing things. At age 25, Indira is the first person in her family to go to college, and is the primary income contributor in her household, supporting her mother and two teenage brothers She works as the communications and visual design coordinator with the Handmade by Friendship Bridge® program, the division that supports Friendship Bridge's artisan clients I see how much pride she takes in her daily work and she is full of innovative ideas In addition, I am inspired by how much she cares for our clients She not only works hard to help them build their businesses, she cares about them deeply on a personal level and considers them friends

From my own experience, Friendship Bridge offered me an opportunity to advance in my career at a time when, to some employers, I looked like a risky hire Though I’d worked parttime for many years as a freelance writer while also working as the primary caregiver for my children, when I began applying for full-time work again, I was repeatedly passed over Friendship Bridge managers saw past my resume gaps and recognized the value I could bring And while learning certain business automation tools continues to have a steeper learning curve for me, my managers show patience while I learn Today, I believe I bring a unique perspective in helping the organization communicate its mission to the general public, not in spite of my less-consistent work history, but because of it

COACHING 16 / WOMEN THRIVE
"Making an impact in the world that lights me up. "

Abundance Coaching with by

Hey sister, I am so excited to be a part of this business edition of Women Thrive I was sitting outside in the morning under the trees, enjoying the cool breeze and my morning coffee, and I started remembering when I first started growing my wellness + coaching business. I have a lot of clients and Facebook messages asking how long it took me to hit 6 figures. (By the way, I'm at high multi 6-figures now, and we crossed the 1 M mark in November 2021). So, I decided to just recap what it looked like for me and when things began to shift quickly I hope these will serve you, too

Igraduated from NTA as a functional nutritional therapy practitioner in 2015 In that entire year after I graduated, I had one client, and we worked together for about 3 months I made a whopping $1,000 that year with my FNTP practice To pay the bills, I did massage therapy and, after expenses, brought home about 20K for the entire year.

In 2016, I decided to go back to school and learn more about the transformational coaching method, so I invested 5K in the basic training program and another 10K in the master program Those investments totaled almost my entire year's wages from the previous year I graduated at the end of 2017 and remember feeling like, "When am I going start to bring in some income to this business?" I have the training, took all the classes, and have had some success hitting a few 10K in 10-week challenges but was nowhere near creating a consistent stream of income As a matter of fact, I was 20K in debt on credit cards alone That didn't count the car, the house, or the biz expenses So here's where things got real I realized that I was trying to piece together all the things I learned on my own. I was getting some results but still didn't feel like I knew what I was doing to grow a business and bring in consistent income and clients and step out of debt and into a thriving practice >>

WOMEN THRIVE / 17

"Success leaves clues."

COACHING 18 / WOMEN THRIVE

While I saw those 3 pieces over and over again, It was actually quite scary when it came time for me to invest in support. But I had to make a decision, and lone wolfing it and piecing it together on my own wasn't working I was scared I only had $100 in my account to give to my coach to say yes, I'm in, and we will figure out the how as we go to come up with the monthly payments. But here is the magic. Once you commit, the show opens.

When I allowed myself to stop lone wolfing it and get into coaching, I created 100K in sales in the first 6 months of working with her I finished out the year at multi 6 figures in sales 2020 1:1 client spaces were completely booked out, and I was actually out of time to take on any new clients.

That's how important having professional support is. It collapses the timeline. It closes the back door on excuses. It gives you a greater vision than you thought possible, and you realize that you're only limiting yourself by your own beliefs

I remember when hitting 100K seemed impossible. I actually thought people were lying about what they were making and what was possible. 10K months were my big money goals. And I look back and see now how easy it was to actually hit consistent 10k months with a proven roadmap, a community, and support

I will NEVER be without a coach As a matter of fact, I value coaching so much that I have hired 3 A mindset coach, a strategy coach and mastermind with a community of women, and a book coach. They keep me playing my A-game, showing up for myself, and staying happy, healthy, and aligned So what's the answer to how long did it take me to hit 6 figures? Honestly, it doesn't happen overnight It happened quickly once I got out of my own way and said yes to the three things I mentioned above.

So, in reality, give yourself a good 1-2 years of committed, focused, simple strategy and inspired action Can it happen quicker? Absolutely Especially when you give up the excuses and go all in So before you join another course or program, ask yourself if you will learn a proven road map, be supported in the community, and have live access to the coach.

I offer surround sound support to my clients, even in my group programs They get LIVE access to me in 3 group calls a month, Live personal 1:1 calls to keep them focused and on track each month, and DAILY access to me via Voxer, email, and FB messenger

Why so much support? Because I know it's needed, and I know the pitfalls we fall into when we just throw money at a course but never really implement the pieces. The clients that work with me implement. They show up for themselves. They commit even if they don't know how, and they keep it simple I don't teach a course I teach a 12-month business accelerator program I also teach a high-level, year-long mastermind where these women are surrounded by other women and have the mindset to hit multi 6-figures. >>

"Money gives you freedom."

It matters who supports you and who you surround yourself with And just in case you're thinking, Chris, money is great, but it doesn't make you happy And I don't want to work so hard to get it. You're right! What it gives you is freedom.

Here's what Financial Freedom looks like for me.

Paying off ALL debt I have zero credit card debt

Paying off my car - done - no car payments

Paying for not one but two kids to go to college I just got to write the checks. Paying for a 10-day trip to Iceland with my 3 boys, in cash.

Donating $20,000 in cash, to causes that matter to me including giving cash to other women wellness entrepreneurs who need support growing their practice Giving away programs and scholarships to women wellness entrepreneurs Supporting my friend's GoFundMe page, raising support with their preemie baby. Contributing to food banks to help feed my community.

Making an impact in the world that lights me up

See you on the inside soon, sister You can do this

To your ultimate Abundance, Chris

Resilience is Your Superpower

Harnessing Inner Strength in the Face of Adversity

Life is a beautiful journey, filled with unexpected twists and turns. We all face challenges and setbacks along the way, but it is our ability to bounce back that defines us. Resilience, the capacity to overcome difficulties and adapt to change, is a superpower that lies within every woman. It is a force that can transform our lives, empower us, and lead us to greatness. In this article, we explore the essence of resilience and how we can harness it to overcome obstacles and achieve our dreams.

Resilience is not just about being tough or unyielding; it is about embracing our vulnerabilities and finding strength within them It is a quality that enables us to face adversity head-on, rise above it, and emerge stronger than ever before Resilience empowers us to turn setbacks into stepping stones, failures into opportunities, and pain into personal growth

The journey toward resilience begins with self-awareness and acceptance Acknowledge your emotions, fears, and doubts without judgment It is okay to feel vulnerable; it is a natural part of the human experience By recognizing and embracing our vulnerabilities, we unlock the power to transform them into sources of strength Remember, it is not what happens to us that defines us - but how we respond to it

Building resilience requires developing a growth mindset Cultivate an attitude of optimism and view challenges as opportunities for growth and learning Embrace failures as valuable lessons that propel you forward Every setback is a chance to discover new strengths and refine your skills By reframing your perspective, you can harness the power of resilience to overcome even the most daunting obstacles

SELF AWARENESS 24 / WOMEN THRIVE

A crucial aspect of resilience is nurturing a support system Surround yourself with positive influences and people who believe in you Seek out mentors and role models who inspire and motivate you These connections can provide guidance, encouragement, and a listening ear during difficult times Remember, resilience is not a solitary journey; it thrives in the presence of a strong community

Self-care plays a vital role in maintaining resilience Engage in activities that replenish your energy and restore your wellbeing Pray and journal, listen to your favorite music, read a good book, or exercise to reduce stress and enhance mental clarity Take time for yourself, to reflect, rejuvenate, and recalibrate

Remember, you cannot pour from an empty cup Prioritizing self-care enables you to navigate challenges with grace and strength Resilience is closely intertwined with perseverance It is the unwavering commitment to keep going despite setbacks The path to success is rarely linear; it is paved with detours and roadblocks But by staying focused on your goals, adapting to change, and persisting through hardships, you cultivate resilience that propels you forward Embrace each challenge as an opportunity to test your determination and expand your capabilities

Embracing resilience means stepping out of your comfort zone Growth and transformation occur when we push beyond our boundaries Embrace uncertainty and take calculated risks Allow yourself to explore new avenues and embrace change The more you challenge yourself, the more resilient you become Remember, the magic happens outside your comfort zone

Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small Recognize the progress you have made and the obstacles you have overcome Each milestone is a testament to your resilience and inner strength By acknowledging your successes, you reinforce your belief in your ability to overcome challenges and inspire others to do the same

Resilience is a superpower that lies within every woman. It is the force that enables us to navigate life's challenges with grace and strength. By embracing our vulnerabilities, cultivating a growth mindset, nurturing a support system, practicing self-care, and persevering through setbacks, we harness the power of resilience. It empowers us to overcome adversity, transform setbacks into opportunities, and achieve our dreams. Remember, resilience is not about being unyielding; it is about embracing our vulnerabilities and finding strength within them.

With resilience as our superpower, we can face any obstacle with courage, determination, and a belief in our own abilities. So, let us harness our inner strength and unleash the power of resilience to create a life filled with growth, purpose, and fulfillment.

8 Ways to Become a Leader in Your Organization

Many people believe that they need to be given a leadership role, accept a new title, or be given a position in the C-suite in order to be a leader This couldn’t be further from the truth Leadership is an opportunity and a responsibility (albeit a rewarding one) and one that I guarantee is available to you right now no matter where you work Here are 8 proven ways to immediately become a leader at work:

Seek opportunities to learn and grow

Ask your supervisor for opportunities to learn within the organization and volunteer to participate in any meetings or brainstorming sessions that are available If this isn’t possible, consider researching certifications or training programs outside of work to learn new skills and connect with new experts in your industry I recommend LinkedIn learning as a good place to start for tech skills and, for improving your leadership and soft skills, Dale Carnegie has many opportunities.

Introduce a new idea or innovation

Don’t assume that this is only for higher-ups I’m an organization with a healthy culture, leadership will welcome your ideas and input. When done correctly, this can be a powerful tool for obtaining a leadership role now or in the future. Offering suggestions for improvement or ideas to help with strategy shows that you care about the growth of the organization and take an interest in where it’s heading. Invest time in learning who does what and how everyone’s roles contribute to the overall mission and then look for efficiencies and enhancements to improve it. If you present an idea, be open to feedback and critique and use it to continue innovating and thinking of even more ideas. Just because something has never been done before in an organization doesn’t mean it can’t be. If you present a new idea, make sure it’s practical and realistic and come prepared with ways to begin implementing it.

Stop waiting for leadership to hit you on the head. 2

Connect with your colleagues

Don’t underestimate the learning and friendship opportunities within your own team. Sometimes spending time and building friendships with the people you work with is the best way to grow and learn more about the culture and community within your organization Seek out coworkers who have been in the organization for a long period of time, or those in a position that you’d like to one day be in, and ask them to share their experiences Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to higher-ups and, when appropriate, ask them for mentorship or advice See if there are ways you can help them (even if it’s just bringing them coffee in the morning), so there’s a give and take and you’re also offering something

Mentor a new employee

Some organizations have a program where you can sign up to mentor a new employee. Do it! Even if there is no program like this, you can ‘unofficially’ mentor a new employee by introducing yourself on their first day, checking in on them, and asking if there’s anything you could do to support their move. Being a new employee is hard (we’ve all been there) and having a friendly face to talk to or ask for help when you’re adjusting to a new role and/ or company can make an enormous difference.

Build relationships with everyone you interact with

This can be clients, partners, colleagues, and even leadership Every relationship is valuable and meaningful and should be treated as such Look out for others, however you can I know it’s not easy but if someone else is promoted to a role that you were hoping for or wanted, perhaps it’s time to look for a new job but in the meantime work on being happy for them instead of negative, and offer your support and best wishes where possible Harboring ill-will will only serve to hurt you in the long run.

Learn about the organization’s history and vision

Sometimes you need to look back in order to move forward Ask your leadership how the organization was formed, and what circumstances occurred that led them to believe there was a need No different than learning about your own ancestry or family history, sometimes, understanding the origins of a business helps give it context and sheds light on where they’re heading and why it’s important in the grand scheme of things

Be an ambassador for the organization’s mission

Every employee has the potential to help or hinder an organization’s mission Make sure you know what the organization is working to accomplish and that you’re doing everything in your power to help them fulfill it. As an employee, you make a difference and your buyin is essential for this achievement. Ask yourself, is this a company and culture that I’m proud to work for? Would I recommend it to my best friend and am I glad to represent this mission? If you answered 'no' to any of these questions, perhaps it’s time to make a change. (Let’s have a conversation.)

Focus on the positive

Every organization has strengths and areas for improvement Make gratitude a daily practice Try to look for the good in your organization and be grateful for it One thing I like to do is to find one new thing every day to be grateful for at work and spend time reflecting on it This is one way to truly become a leader that people want to follow

In our organization, we have a practice in our weekly company-wide meeting, where every employee publicly shares one thing they’re grateful for in another employee or in the company This promotes a spirit of winning and camaraderie within the team and organization

Triumphing Against the Odds

InspiringStoriesofWomen OvercomingPersonal Challenges

Life is a journey filled with unexpected twists and turns, and for women, this journey often comes with its own set of unique challenges From battling illness and coping with loss, to managing difficult circumstances, women around the world have demonstrated remarkable resilience and strength in the face of adversity In this article, we will delve into the inspiring stories of women who have triumphed over personal challenges, offering insights, lessons, and advice for women everywhere who may be navigating their own difficult paths

Conquering Illness and Rediscovering Strength

Illness can be a daunting obstacle that tests one's physical and emotional resilience. However, there are numerous women who have faced illness head-on and emerged stronger than ever. These stories of women inspire us to believe in the power of the human spirit and the capacity for personal growth in the face of adversity.

One such woman is Sarah, who was diagnosed with a chronic autoimmune condition at a young age. Despite the debilitating effects of her illness, she refused to let it define her. Through perseverance and determination, she sought the best medical care, adjusted her lifestyle, and adopted a positive mindset. Sarah not only managed her condition but also became an advocate for others facing similar challenges, raising awareness and providing support to those in need

If you are facing a health challenge, remember to prioritise self-care and seek professional guidance Surround yourself with a support network of friends, family, and healthcare professionals who can offer guidance, encouragement, and emotional support

Turning Loss into Resilience

Grief and loss can be overwhelming, testing one's emotional strength and leaving an indelible mark on the journey of life. However, many women have faced unimaginable loss and transformed their pain into a driving force for personal growth and resilience.

Take the story of Emma, a widow who tragically lost her husband in a car accident. In the face of her deep sorrow, Emma found solace in supporting others who had experienced similar losses. She co-founded a grief support group, offering a safe space for individuals to share their stories, find comfort, and rebuild their lives. Emma's journey reminds us that while loss can be devastating, it can also provide an opportunity for personal transformation and the ability to uplift others

If you have experienced loss, reach out to support groups or counselling services that can provide guidance and comfort during your healing process Expressing your emotions and seeking support from others who have gone through similar experiences can be incredibly healing

The power of the human spirit.

Overcoming Adversity through Resilience

Life often presents us with unexpected challenges that test our resilience and determination Women who have overcome adversity, such as poverty, abuse, or trauma, inspire us with their unwavering spirit and ability to rise above their circumstances These women prove that resilience is not only a response to hardship but also a catalyst for personal growth and empowerment

Consider the story of Maya, who grew up in a disadvantaged neighbourhood plagued by violence and limited opportunities Despite the odds stacked against her, Maya refused to let her circumstances define her future She sought education as her way out, working multiple jobs to support herself while pursuing her studies Maya's perseverance paid off when she secured a scholarship to a prestigious university, ultimately graduating with honours and becoming a successful advocate for underprivileged communities

If you are facing adversity, remember that resilience resides within you Seek out resources and support systems that can assist you in overcoming challenges Connect with organisations or mentors who specialise in empowering individuals in similar situations

Embracing Change and Transforming Lives

Change can be daunting, particularly when it requires stepping out of one's comfort zone. However, countless women have embraced change as an opportunity for personal growth and transformation, positively impacting their own lives and the lives of others

Consider the story of Maria, who left her stable but unfulfilling corporate job to pursue her passion for social entrepreneurship She founded a nonprofit organization that empowers marginalised women through skill development and entrepreneurship training Maria's courage to follow her heart not only transformed her own life but also uplifted an entire community, providing opportunities for women to break free from the cycle of poverty

If you feel trapped in a situation that is not aligned with your passions and aspirations, take a leap of faith and embrace change Seek guidance from mentors or career coaches who can help you navigate the transition Remember that transformation often begins outside of your comfort zone

The inspiring stories of women triumphing over personal challenges teach us valuable lessons about resilience, strength, and the indomitable human spirit. By sharing their journeys, we honor their determination and offer hope and guidance to women facing their own adversities. Remember, you are not alone in your struggles, and within you lies the power to overcome any challenge. Embrace your own unique journey, seek support when needed, and trust in your ability to transform adversity into triumph.

One thing all businesses need is people. No matter how good the service or product. Sometimes it is not what we say, it is our delivery to potential customers or clients that makes all the difference Networking can be in-person or virtual or both and still benefit your business Some may ask what are the benefits of networking with others while I build or grow my business?

Networking WhileBuilding YourBusiness

EXPANDING YOUR NETWORK

The first benefit of networking is this helps you to get your services to people outside of your family and friends (although this is a great start) You may not know all your business needs to succeed Whether you are starting from scratch, in the middle needing new ways to attract clients, or a bit seasoned and you want to expand I see this as an opportunity to seek out people to give your business the advantage you are looking for You may not be an expert on everything, but there are some people you can connect with through networking who have been doing things a bit longer and can provide assistance

For example, your business is selling soap You have the technical details together, but the creative side to create content is not your thing Networking allows you to exchange your knowledge with the creator content expert, this can become a two-way street helping each other as you work together

NETWORKING
32 / WOMEN THRIVE
"This is an opportunity to seek out people to give your business the advantage you are looking for."

MEETING NEW PEOPLE

The second benefit is meeting new people Networking can be an amazing collaboration experience overall Everyone’s personality style is different If you are an introvert, this will help you break out of that shell, so your best self can shine bright On the other hand, if you are an extrovert your social butterfly skills shine bright too

Now some have both traits - you work it the best way you can The more events you attend, the sharper your skills become as a business person and leader of the team (even if the team is just you at the moment) You never know how a person's skillset or expertise or product can come together down the road For example, you can be the referral needed or vice versa

BUILDING YOUR TRIBE

The fourth benefit is building your tribe - your brand - while bringing in new clients or customers and referrals. The mindset to win and fill the need your business offers closes the void. Nobody does it like you, no matter what your business is.

SUPPORTING OTHERS

This brings me to the third benefit of supporting other businesses. You may not need the services offered but you know someone who does. The business could be a nonprofit organization for kids, education, or for Veterans. By networking, you could be a Power Partner to that organization, leading you to other nonprofit or profit organizations.

You never know what this can do for your business as you are continuing to build With your support, you can end up connecting with new clients or customers and increase your referral status

Having the mindset for growth in each stage is a building block. I believe we all have a purpose on this earth. At the end of the day, you have to decide: will you be the go-to person because of your expertise or be stagnant because you are not comfortable networking with others?

Looking over the benefits, there are various ways networking can help build your business whether in-person or virtually. All businesses move at different speeds to grow and expand You need to find out what is the most efficient and effective way this will support your business And remember as you evolve, so will your business

The Superpower of Success

It comes in an instant; an idea floods your mind like a strike of lightning. Your mind floods with excitement and possibilities. For a brief moment, you feel brilliant. But then, almost immediately, doubt creeps in. Questions come filing in like a high-school marching band. Is my idea good enough? Will clients want it? Will they buy it? Am I ready? Instead of taking action, you put a pin in it and move on. No harm, no foul, right? When self-doubt and self-protection win battle after battle, it erodes your personal authority.

Stories that Stall Success

Personal authority is the internal power, confidence, and influence that allows us to express ourselves authentically, make decisions aligned with our values, and take action toward our goals It forms the foundation for self-leadership, motivating us to turn our visions into reality and make a positive impact

As female entrepreneurs, we often center our businesses around making a positive impact We limit our capacity to create that impact by relinquishing our personal authority

Here are three common situations that challenge our conviction and may leave us unintentionally undermining our personal authority

Self-protective tendencies often arise when we embark on something new, bombarding us with doubts What are the stories you are telling yourself? They sound like this: "What if no one wants this offer?" "Are you ready?" "You're not an expert; who will want to listen to you?"

When you can feel yourself start to freeze, this is a time to challenge your thoughts with objective truth Ask yourself, what do you know and believe about yourself? Believe in your ability to figure things out and seek support from resources you know Let the memories of your past achievements shine through when fear takes hold Bestselling author of The Naked CEO, Alex Malley, shared this sentiment with Forbes: "The only way to build self-confidence is to take a risk and take action despite your fear of failure, messing up or embarrassment If things work out, then you now know you can do more than you think If things don't work out, you now know that you can handle more than you think Either way, you're better off "

our Results Are Not a Measure of Your Worth

hen we don't close a sales call, when a launch oesn't generate the results you hoped for, , even worst, when no one attends your free orkshop The automatic response is to take it be something about you I once knew a sales rector who admitted that he only hired a sales p once they were on their 2nd or 3rd sales

b Why? "Because Sales is hard! and it takes perience to be good at sales It's a ‘feel’ for atching the right client to the right solution the right time," he said, exasperated that I ould even need to ask

Poor results don't mean that you, your rvice, or your product is not good enough hat else could it be? Often a tweak is quired in our marketing, messaging, and sibility A good Root Cause Analysis amework with a mentor or a coach can be elpful in this situation and far more productive an the default negative self-talk.

When you can look at a situation objectively, ck out what worked and what didn't, and ake tweaks. You will naturally feel in ntrol and confident. Further, it's far less ork to adjust than to build something new om scratch.

By recognizing these signs and taking action to reclaim your personal authority, you empower yourself to overcome self-doubt and make a positive impact in your business and life. Remember, personal authority is not about being perfect or having all the answers; it's about embracing your strengths, owning your voice, and taking steps toward building confidence and reaching your goals.

Do you dream of making an impact?

Do you have a vision for your life? Not only for your family but also with your job or business?

But how does the reality of your life look? Are you tired and exhausted and often just manage to get through your day? Do you feel worn down by all the obligations in your life for your family, your job, your spouse, your community and taking care of your aging parents? And even though you sense that your energy is scattered between these obligations, you try to shine and make a difference?

Deep inside, you know that all these energy vampires are stealing your energy until nothing is left for yourself Yes, you read correctly: energy vampires We all know these people who are always whining about how bad things are for them that come by for a short chat and afterward you just feel drained Or these long meetings where nothing really happens and you just feel that you wasted your time Or long commutes or always being in a rush for dropping off and picking up the kids The list is endless, but all these activities have something in common: they drain your energy

Does this really have to be this way?

No, of course not! We are just so used to it that this is the way it needs to be But here comes the good news: You can change that any time! And I am not talking about you needing to change your mindset, or recommending that you meditate more or relax, which is all good, of course

No – I know that you are very busy! That’s why I am going to share a little secret with you Yes, a secret! Pssst Are you ready for me to share it with you? Sure, you are You want to get out of the situation and make an impact, right?

So, what is the secret I am talking about? You need to protect your energy! Now you might think: This should help? I hear you But yes, it is as simple as this If you keep your energy with you, you don’t need to worry where your energy always went It stays with you and you will feel much more productive and centered

Would you like to know more about it? Of course, I have a shortcut for you I am going to share a powerful Energy Tool with you, right now

SELFCARE 40 / WOMEN THRIVE

How a rose helps you to keep your energy with you.

The best thing would be that you use this Energy Tool right in the morning. You can even do it, when you are still in bed, waking up to get ready for the day. It is the Energetic Rose Exercise. A rose exercise? Yes, you read correctly. It is as simple as this.

The Energetic Rose is really phenomenal. It doesn’t only prevent your energy dispersing to all your different activities, but keeps it with you. This makes you feel more centered and balanced. It also supports you to pick up less external energy from other people and, hence, protects your energy. On top of that, it enables you to hold your own space which makes you feel much more comfortable.

In order to take advantage of this powerful exercise, just follow these three simple steps:

Visualise

1 2 3

Hold

When you start introducing your rose protection into your day, you will notice how much better you feel around others and in crowded places too. I am quite sure you will also notice that you can concentrate better and are more focused.

Every morning, you can have a short ‘check in’ with your rose. If the rose starts to wilt, you can always create a new one in its place. You can also experiment a little bit and choose different colors for the rose depending on your day and your plans. You will see that integrating the Energetic Rose Exercise in your day is really fun and makes such a difference.

Your energy is your most important currency

For many people, their time is their most important currency. However, what can you do with all the time in the world when you feel miserable and cannot enjoy it because you feel tired and exhausted? That’s why it is so important to protect your most valuable asset: Your energy!

Now you have a powerful, simple, and fun tool to keep your energy with you, and don’t give any energy vampires a chance anymore You definitely are going to feel the difference And not only you Also the people around you Now ask yourself this - which color are you picking for your rose?

Embracing Change

Cultivating Resilience to Step Out and Thrive

In the intricate tapestry of life, there often comes a point when we realize that the situation we find ourselves in no longer serves our deepest desires and aspirations Whether it's a job that leaves us feeling unfulfilled, a career that misaligns with our values, or an unquenchable longing to pursue our truest purpose, the need for change becomes undeniable Yet, stepping out of these situations is not without its struggles

Change brings uncertainty, fear of the unknown, and the need for confidence and resilience In this article, we will explore the transformative journey of stepping out of unfulfilling circumstances, highlighting the emotional challenges, and emphasizing the importance of physical, mental, and emotional resilience in creating a balanced and thriving life

Recognizing the Impact

Beyond the emotional struggles, it's important to acknowledge that remaining in an unfulfilling situation can have detrimental effects on our overall wellbeing The constant battle between our true desires and the reality we face can result in an imbalanced nervous system, leading to physical symptoms such as stress, fatigue, and even illness Recognizing the toll this takes on our mind, body, and soul, becomes a driving force to initiate change

The Fear of the Unknown

Fear often accompanies change like an unwelcome companion The fear of leaving behind the familiar, the fear of failure, and the fear of what lies ahead can be paralyzing. However, it is crucial to understand that the growth we seek lies on the other side of fear. By acknowledging our fears, leaning into them, and embracing the unknown, we open ourselves up to boundless opportunities for personal and professional growth.

42 / WOMEN THRIVE

MINDSET

Balancing Physical, Mental, and Emotional Resilience

Resilience is the cornerstone of navigating the challenges that come with change To cultivate resilience, it is essential to address and balance the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of our wellbeing Physical resilience involves nurturing our bodies through movement, nutrition, and rest, allowing us to withstand the demands of the journey Mental resilience entails developing a growth mindset, practicing positive self-talk, and seeking support when needed Emotional resilience involves understanding and processing our emotions, cultivating self-compassion, and nurturing healthy relationships Balancing these aspects creates a harmonious interplay between body, mind, and soul, forming the foundation for resilience

Cultivating Self-Compassion

Throughout the process of stepping out of an unfulfilling situation, it is crucial to practice self-compassion. Change is a journey, and there will be moments of setbacks, doubts, and vulnerability. By treating ourselves with kindness, understanding that growth takes time, and offering ourselves forgiveness, we foster resilience and the ability to bounce back stronger.

g p j y of change can bring about a range of emotions, from excitement and anticipation to doubt and anxiety. Embracing these emotions, rather than suppressing them, allows us to create an authentic connection with our inner selves. It is through this emotional connection that we find the courage to push through the challenges and move towards a more fulfilling future.

Stepping out of a situation that no longer serves us is an act of selfempowerment and a testament to our innate resilience The emotional struggles, the fears, and the imbalances caused by the unfulfilled present serve as catalysts for change By acknowledging the importance of physical, mental, and emotional resilience, and by fostering a balanced connection between body, mind, and soul, we can navigate the uncertainties with grace and confidence Embrace the transformative power of change, listen to your heart's calling, and watch as you rise above your fears, creating a life that aligns with your truest purpose

Are Triggers Actually a Growth Test?

Most people try to avoid triggers at all cost Why? Because nobody likes to remember a traumatic experience, let alone feel the emotions associated with said event such as fear, upset, or anger I’m right there with you, and yet lately I’ve found myself being triggered quite a lot.

For those of you who don’t know me, I have lived a rollercoaster life underpinned by codependent, toxic relationships that affected my health on every level emotionally, mentally, and physically. At my lowest point I wanted to die, because living had become unbearable to me. Instead I chose to live, but that meant changing. And so my healing journey began…

So back to the triggers…Of course, triggers have been present throughout my years of healing, but this is the first time they have surfaced in the form of a romantic relationship. Whilst incredibly frustrating because, after all, I have spent years working through my trauma and feel confident in all the changes I have made in my life due to this healing work, as I move through this relatively new relationship, l am also realising how much of a growth opportunity these triggers are for me. Am I truly able to make the unfamiliar familiar when it comes to matters of the heart?

I’ll share an example with you. To some, this may seem silly, but in my experience, triggers are rarely rational…

One night when my boyfriend stayed over, his snoring woke me up I turned his head as this often solves the problem Yet a little while later, it happened again By the third time his snoring woke me up it was 4:00 in the morning and I was exhausted My reaction was to go to my guest room in an attempt to get at least some sleep.

Alas, a mere two hours later my dog woke up and started barking like crazy because I wasn’t where I was supposed to be. As soon as he found me he calmed down, but I had to get up to take him out. All in all, I didn’t get more than a few hours of sleep the entire night.

That morning I felt angry, even bitter. Angry because I was exhausted and cranky, bitter because I had chosen to sacrifice my needs and comfort for someone else again.

Upon being woken up the first time, I could have simply woken my boyfriend and asked him to go to the other room. Instead, my default was to prioritise his need for sleep over mine, his comfort over mine (it’s my bed after all), and his overall wellbeing over mine. TRIGGER!

Even though he of course did not snore or wake me up on purpose, I felt anger towards him. But more than that, I felt angry at myself for falling back into old, destructive and selfsacrificing patterns.

RELATIONSHIP 44 / WOMEN THRIVE
"I felt angry, even bitter. "

Fortunately today, I not only have an acute awareness of what’s happening within myself and, more importantly, why, I also have an enti toolbox of coping mechanisms

In my past I would have suppressed the emotions, convinced myself that it wasn’t a big deal because it wasn’t his fault, and moved on Yet that approach led me to exhaustion, resentment, and always feeling ‘less than’

Fortunately, I was able to approach the situation very differently now using techniques such as self-parenting, mindfulness, meditation and most importantly, having the clarity and confidence to address the issue with my partner from a place of care as well as boundary setting

Moreover, it was another opportunity for me to see how he would respond Would he tell me to stop fussing over nothing? Would he ignore the issue completely? Would he tell me it’s my own fault for not waking him? All of which would have been major red flags

In case you’re wondering, he did not do any of those things He expressed empathy, he showed affection, he apologised, and he said to absolutely wake him up if it ever happens again In other words, definitely a green flag for proceeding with the relationship Yay for growth!

If your relationships have left you unfulfilled to date and you’re keen to understand your why, learn how to recognise red flags, acquire a multitude of coping mechanisms when you are triggered, and feel seen and supported throughout the process, then consider joining my 8 week Make Your Body Your Boss program Wherever you are on your journey, always remember that YOU ARE ENOUGH

There is an old saying“work smarter not harder” - and as a woman, this phrase takes on an entirely new meaning. Many women are working hard to prove they can do everything their male counterparts can do. While we are capable of doing everything a man can dothe key to our success is doing it at our own energetic pace.

One of the biggest reasons we have period problems is we are ‘trying to work like men’ when our hormones are very different. This doesn’t change our capability, just the rhythm with which we plan our work and our lives.

Men experience hormone fluctuations over 24 hours. Women experience them over 28-30 days This means that there are days you have lots of energy and feel like you can multi-task like a champion and there are days you want to curl up with a good book and not interact with others

or Period Problems?

These changes are normal. Let me say this again - what you are feeling is normal.

We generally spend the majority of our time working against our natural body rhythms because our culture favors productivity all the time. If you look outside the window at nature - nature doesn’t stay in a flowering and fruit-producing state all the time and neither do we

When we work against these natural rhythms in our body we see period problems arise Cramps, bloating, headaches, brown blood, irregular cycles, PMS/PMDD and so much more are symptoms of disharmony in our body that result from pushing too hard when we should be pulling back

The key to reducing period problems and increasing our productivity is the knowledge of our cycle

When we learn the phases of our cycle and the gifts each phase gives us, we are able to plan our work in a way where we get to be the best version of ourselves in everything we do and reduce period symptoms at the same time

There are two phases to your menstrual month with two smaller events nested inside of them. The follicular phase is the first half of your cycle and it begins on the first day of fresh red blood flow and ends at ovulation. Menstruation is the smaller event nested within the follicular phase. The luteal phase is the second half of your cycle and it kicks off with the smaller event of ovulation and continues until your bleeding begins again

The follicular phase is all about substance You lose substance for the first 4-6 days during your bleed then you build substance preparing the endometrial lining and egg for the month

The luteal phase is about energy and heat It is signaled by a rise in basal body temperature which confirms ovulation has taken place The egg is released, and if fertilized, there is a lot of energy that goes into the early stage of development of the fetus Even when pregnancy isn’t the goal, the basal body temperature rises and remains elevated for the rest of the cycle until it drops and the bleed arrives

"The key to reducing period problems and increasing our productivity is the knowledge of our cycle."

Why is this important?

When we learn to work with the natural energy that fluctuates during our cycle we are no longer ‘swimming upstream against the current’, making ourselves more tired We go further faster and with less effort allowing the current to carry us When you use less energy working against your hormone changes, your period symptoms go down

Menstruation is for less strenuous tasksmentally and physically

Things like:

Filing

Writing

Self-paced work

Introverted tasks like bookkeeping, statement reconciliation, and any other tasks where you need people to leave you alone and allow you to focus your full attention on a task

Late Follicular phase is when our energy grows as we get closer to ovulation. We are able to increase the demands on our bodies.

Things like:

Group work

Networking

More verbal communication-focused work

Longer work days as we get closer to ovulation

Ovulation is the highest point for our energy (or it should be - if it's not and you have symptoms during this time, your body is asking for support ) This is where we flourish on all fronts

The optimal time for social activities - podcasts, live recordings, interviews, networking, presentations, hanging out with friends

The optimal time for headshots (yes - your face is more symmetrical and has a natural glow during this phase!)

The peak time for athletic endeavors

Late Luteal phase is when we start to pull inward as we make our way through the rest of this phase towards the period beginning again

Until the week before our period, we are still very verbal and more extroverted in our energy so networking and social requirements are best planned here

Planning tasks are optimal - strategic planning, trip planning, organizing, project management Mindful movement helps prepare the body for fewer cramps and clots during the period as this phase progresses. You are more susceptible to injury in the week before your period, so plan accordingly and take the intensity back.

When we learn to plan our workflow around our strengths, instead of the inner critic shaming us for not keeping up, we are able to optimize our productivity and at the same time reduce our period problems.

Are You Good Enough for a Healthy Relationship?

And

that is what I help women do.

The thing is toxic relationships, whether romantically, professionally or familiar, drag our mental and physical health within an inch of its life. They keep us in a state of activation within our nervous system which you might have called fight or flight which has huge impacts on our health.

This is quite a confronting question, right? This was the exact question my own therapist asked me whilst I was healing from a toxic relationship.

Initially, it triggered me. I was in a low place emotionally and thought she was questioning my worth and understandably this made me defensive. If that triggered you too, there’s a high chance you should read on.

This was not her questioning my worth but her prompting me to question what I thought of my own worth and from that start to really sit with myself and rebuild my shattered self-esteem, value, self-worth, and self-trust

Whilst we’re in these relationships and environments, it is extremely hard to really see our self I know that sounds silly, and you’re probably thinking I live with myself - of course I see myself But the reality is you are so consumed in the emotional cocktail of chemicals that are released in these trauma-bonded relationships you fall between people-pleasing or over-functioning to get your needs met What's more, you don’t even have the emotional bandwidth to see how detrimental the effects are to your health

That IBS flare up – probably just due to something you ate That chronic illness – probably just unlucky The sleepless nights due to worrying, crying or arguing are fine, you’ll just grab an extra strong coffee on the way to work, oh, and whilst we’re on the subject those small mistakes you keep making at work and can’t figure out ‘what is wrong with you’ is due to being emotionally exhausted

Now we can sit here and blame the other person and think of 100 ways in which they could change or 100 reasons why they should but whilst we do that, we are still giving away our power And when we give away our power, we become even more vulnerable to jump back into another toxic relationship and the cycle starts again

SELF AWARENESS 48 / WOMEN THRIVE

But it does not have to be. What if I told you that a safe and healthy relationship is available to you and is completely within your reach as long as you are willing to give your heart a break from relationships externally and really focus on the relationship you have with yourself?

Doesn’t seem too bad does it? However, the vast majority won’t because it means sitting with yourself with some uncomfortable feelings for a while but with the reward of a healthy self-concept, being able to assert your boundaries, phenomenal self-worth, confidence and with an inherent knowingness of your worth so you can say no to anything less than you deserve

The thing is everything starts and ends with us and that is a tricky thing to acknowledge and admit I know I’ve been there

Now whilst I am not saying you deserved or chose a toxic relationship, you did play a part in the dynamic which whilst being problematic until this point also means you have a choice to make a change from this point forward. You have a choice to commit to yourself and take the steps necessary to ensure that you will not settle for the bare minimum, rejection or betrayal again because the truth is you don't have to!

Studies have shown that our brain only cares about keeping us safe It does not want you to be happy, it wants safety For example, if you had a caregiver abandon you - you are more likely to choose the same dynamic in a healthy relationship as an adult thanks to a psychological phenomenon of repetitive compulsion first coined by Sigmund Freud It does this because the traumatic event is familiar and our brain sees it as an attempt to change the ending However, this rarely works and, in fact, keeps us stuck reliving the same traumatic experiences

When our own self-worth, self-respect and selftrust is on the floor, we aren’t operating from the best version of ourself; we are making choices from our wounds which may have occurred from as early as childhood but up to as recent as yesterday. When we do the inner work around those and raise our awareness of them, we unlock the secret decision-making parts of us that have been working to protect us rather than in our best interests.

This logically makes sense as a primal animal However, things have evolved as have we and we no longer need to choose people, situations or environments that are unsafe just because they are familiar.

So, if you take nothing else away from this article, see it as your reminder that you are worthy even when you don’t feel like it, simply because you exist. You can change your relationships and you are more than good enough for a healthy relationship but the key to this starts with focusing and changing the relationship with yourself, first and foremost.
