The Women’s Theatre Festival was founded in 2016 to create, produce, and promote extraordinary theatre by women.

All WTF shows are written by women, directed by women, have a cast that’s 50% or more female or non-binary, and have as many women as technical workers and designers as possible.

Devised Works The Illuminated Dresses Conceived by local playwright Debra Kaufman, The Illuminated Dresses is a new piece in the earliest stages of production. It contains roughly a dozen monologues, each written by a different playwright. These monologues cover numerous and compelling scenarios of women from all of walks of life, yet each centers around a story or experience involving a dress.

Occhi Aperti (Eyes Open) Want to go on an adventure? Join director/deviser Rowen Haigh Mahoney for a no-holds-barred 24-hour devising process. Rowen will be creating a new show based on an experimental treatment for mental illness: a group of doctors in Italy are using a combination of light therapy and sleep deprivation to treat bipolar disorder and severe depression. Apparently, for some folks, it works miracles. For Rowen, it's a topic ripe with intrigue, imagination, and lots of questions: - Where is the line between treatment and torture?

- What's it like to be so afflicted by a mental illness that you put yourself through this treatment?

- How do we overcome the need to sleep–what actually works to keep us awake?

We will play, write, and improvise for a full 24 hours to explore these questions and to investigate the space between science, medicine, and the mystical nature of the wee hours. There will be a public showing of the devised vignettes at the end.

Unfolding Unfolding tells the story of a transwoman who is ready for the world to see her as she is.

Her wife, on the other hand, is not.

My Son My Son tells the story of two mothers whose sons, one autistic and one black, both struggle to survive in a world that fears them for being who they are.

The Violet Sisters The Violet Sisters depict two women who have come together for their father's funeral...after a hurricane. And that isn't the only storm in this family.

Craigslisted Craigslisted is a dark comedy about a college student who discovers that she can sell aspects of herself on Craigslist for money.

Pumped Pumped shows two women who meet to exchange breast milk, and what that precious commodity means to them and each other.

Reading Signs Reading Signs is a realistic and sometimes harsh window into the world of a woman who is slowly losing her mother to mental instability.

Hope Throws Her Heart Away Hope Throws Her Heart Away is three actresses who play one woman in different stages in her life, as she tries to figure out who she is. Like adulthood, it's difficult to describe.

Escape Velocity Escape Velocity is a stunning and visceral insight into how you must sometimes leave your family behind in order to save yourself.

The Third Act The Third Act is a comedy where Sue's daughter is getting married and wants her and her ex to reconcile for the wedding, but Sue isn't sure she's ready to recover.

Hearts of Stone Lydia Stokes is dreaming about dead psych patients... while she is awake. She believes they need her help: her husband believes that she is out of her mind.

Comb Your Hair Comb Your Hair is vignettes from the experience of Black women, particularly focusing on the challenging aspects of surviving in a white man's world.

Funeral Jane Funeral Jane is about a trans woman who works as a mortician. When her own father dies, she must battle her brother for her right to mourn her dad in her own way.

In The Fall In the Fall looks at both predator and prey in teacher-student relationships...but the story is not as simple as it sounds. Who's the real victim here?

Headline for a Hero Headline for a Hero is the real story of the meeting of Eleanor Roosevelt and Ludmila, a Russian sniper who surprised both Eleanor and the world.

Lady Scribblers Lady Scribblers depicts London in 1689, where Christopher Rich runs the only royally sanctioned theatre in London, but a group of female playwrights and actors aim to change that.

Dementia’s Daughter Dementia's Daughter is a poignant and lyrical take on a daughter's relationship with her mother, who is suffering from dementia.

Gel Us Gel Us is the comedic story of how some women will do anything for a friend...even run several miles on purpose.

The True Story of The Radium Girls.

It’s the 1920s, and Catherine and her friends work as radium dial painters—making watches glow in the dark. The girls think they’ve got it made with their high-paying, glamorous jobs. But when the company’s female workforce starts getting sick and dying from a mysterious illness, Catherine leads her friends in suing the company. Part play, part newsreel, and part poetry, These Shining Lives is based on the true story of the “Radium Girls," a landmark legal case for workers rights.
