Football supports Heads Up campaign Football is coming together this weekend with the ambition to kick off biggest ever conversation around mental health, as new research shows just 1 in 3 football fans regularly talk about mental health with their friends.

For two weekends in February, every football team from across the Premier League, English Football League, The National League, The Barclays FA Women’s Super League, The FA Women’s Championship, The FA Women’s National League will dedicate their matches to Heads Up, a partnership between The FA and Heads Together.

Spearheaded by HRH The Duke of Cambridge, the season-long Heads Up campaign aims to harness the influence and popularity of football to normalise the conversation around mental health, working closely with charity partners Mind, CALM and Sporting Chance.

The ‘Heads Up Weekends’ will highlight the power of talking as a way to support one another and dispel stigma, with activity planned at fixtures across the men’s and women’s football calendar.

Over 8th - 9th February and 14th - 17th February, clubs of all levels will feature Heads Up branding across stadiums, programmes and player kit, in a major unifying moment that aims to get the nation talking about mental health. Over the weekends, clubs will also be releasing their own short films featuring players talking about mental health and showcasing the work they do to improve mental health in their communities. Meanwhile, the Scottish FA are also supporting Heads Up over the 8th – 9th February, with activity planned at eight Scottish Cup Fifth Round fixtures.

To officially kick off the Heads Up Weekends, and marking Time To Talk Day on Thursday 6th February, the Duke of Cambridge joined players, managers, representatives and fans from the men’s and women’s game to take part in a table football tournament and a mental health conversation at Heist Bank in London.

It comes as a new Heads Up survey of 2,014 football fans, carried out by Censuswide, showed: • Football is the number one topic of conversation (75%) between fans and their friends • However, only 1 in 3 (34%) football fans regularly talk about mental health with their friends – with male fans much less likely to do so (27% of male respondents, compared to 47% of women). Overall, male football fans were over three times more likely to talk about football than mental health with their friends (83%, compared with 27%).

• Meanwhile, 40% of football fans find it easiest to talk about their mental health while busy with other activities – such as while walking or running, driving, going to the pub, or watching sports with a friend.

Meanwhile 32% would find it easiest to have a face to face conversation at home with no distractions.

Men’s and women’s football is now coming together to call on everyone to talk more about mental health in order to normalise the subject and help remove the stigma that prevents many – particularly men - from speaking out.

In a message included in every matchday programme over the Heads Up Weekends, HRH The Duke of Cambridge wrote: “Imagine if we talked about mental health as much as we talk about football…. Many of us won’t go a day without talking about it. And whatever team we support, every single fan, player and manager has one thing in common – we all have mental health, in the same way that we all have physical health. And we will all face ups and downs in life which will affect it. It’s time we start taking our mental fitness as seriously as we do our physical fitness, and that starts with talking.”

Kelly Simmons, the FA’s Director of the Women’s Professional Game said: “It’s significant that clubs across the men’s and women’s football pyramid are uniting together around such an important societal issue. Over recent years the women’s game has been home to inspirational role models who have spoken with courage about their mental wellbeing and now because of the Heads Up campaign and the excellent work conducted by the leagues and clubs, we hope that these individuals are no longer the lone voices but part of a societal change for us all to speak more openly about mental health. “”We’re grateful to all our clubs in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League, FA Women’s Championship and FA Women’s National Leagues for their unequivocal support and look forward to the positive change that this weekend will have.”

The Women’s FA Cup and replayed their Fourth Round tie on Sunday after their previous meeting was forced to be abandoned with twelve minutes remaining, due to a waterlogged pitch.

Palace had been leading 3-0 at the time of the abandonment and it was the Championship side who opened the scoring through Amber Stobbs, ten minutes before half time. After the break, Charlie Goad doubled Palace’s advantage with her first goal for the club and Stobbs then netted her second with a superb strike from outside the area. Magda Mosengo rounded off the scoring, shortly after coming on as a substitute, to seal a 4-0 victory for Palace and a home tie against in the last sixteen.

Mel and Aaron rewarded Sunderland manager Melanie Reay is the winner of the January Premier Division Manager of the Month award for the FA Women’s National League.

The award comes after the Wearsiders won all of the ir games during the month, including strengthening their position at the top of the Northern Premier Division and going through to the last sixteen of the Women’s FA Cup. Meanwhile, the Division One award went to Southampton Women boss Aaron Smith.

FA Women’s National League League Cup continued their excellent season by winning 4-0 against , in order to book their place in the last four of a competition they last won in 2012. The sides went into the game occupying the top two places in the Northern Premier Division, with Derby in good form in recent weeks, and after a goalless first half, Jessica Brown opened the scoring for the Wearsiders six minutes after the restart. Keira Ramshaw increased their lead with sixteen minutes remaining and after Maria Farrugia made it three, Ramshaw rounded off the scoring with her second goal. are also through to the semi finals after a fine 3-1 victory away to . Natasha Baptiste gave Stoke a first half lead which was cancelled out by Lucy Sowerby and after the break, Amy Hughes put the visitors back in front and Baptiste sealed the win with her second.

On Wednesday night, completed the quarter final line up with a 2-0 success at local rivals . Division One Midlands now head the table by ten points after a fifteen-goal blast against . Jade Cross led the scoring for Wolves with a four-goal haul and Billie Haynes bagged a hat-trick, whilst Courtney Jones and Alice Keitley each netted twice. Lowri Walker, Jamilla Palmer and Natalie Widdal all added one apiece, with an own goal completing the total. won a hard fought 1-0 victory away to and this takes them back into second place, ahead of whose match was postponed. Division One South East returned to league action following their Women's FA Cup heroics last week and have reclaimed the leadership straight away, thanks to . The visitors a 4-0 victory over had not played a league match since 8th December, Ipswich playing only once in the not playing, meantime, but with goals from Zoe Cossey, Anna Grey, Eloise King and Blue Wilson saw Ipswich home. meanwhile kept up their challenge by beating 2-0.

The two Reserve League Cup semi finals yielded a total of fourteen goals and Mia Lockett was the heroine for as they won 5-3 away to . Elisabeth Heyndrickx and Ronnell Homes added Palace's other goals, whilst MK's markswomen were Mollie Coupar (2) and Amy McLean. will play Palace in the Final after on a penalty shootout, after the teams had shared a getting the better of 3-3 draw. Dons reach last four Chesham Utd 0 Milton Keynes Dons 2 Milton Keynes Dons secured a semi final spot in the FAWNL League Cup with a 2-0 away win over Chesham United at a windy Amy Lane.

Two second half strikes were enough to seal the deal for the Southern Premier Division club against hard working opposition from Division One South West.

With the two sides having met in a high scoring Berks & Bucks FA Senior Cup semi final just last week, this encounter was unsurprisingly a more tight and cagey affair in the opening stages.

Gemma Fraser tested visiting keeper Emma Kirby with a low shot from distance on six minutes whilst Lucia Delves, in the home goal, Jacqui Hanson battles for the ball with Jade Bell (www.jamesprickett.co.uk). moved quickly to hold a Jess Driscoll free kick midway through the half.

Dons fashioned a couple more good openings around the half hour with good work by Jade Bell setting up Molly Lemon for a shot inches wide, then Bell herself having a shot well saved.

Playing with the gusty breeze and the slope in their favour, MK started the second half strongly and it was Bell, a danger throughout the match, who opened the scoring, getting free on the left edge of the area to drive a powerful low shot past Lucia Delves.

A second goal arrived on the hour from a right side corner, Driscoll getting in bravely to power home a header from twelve yards out.

The hosts reshuffled with skipper Dawne Campbell moving into attack and managed to exert greater pressure on the Dons defence. One lovely flowing move saw Fraser hit a first time effort which was inches wide of the upright on 78 minutes, but that was as near as Chesham came to reducing the deficit.

A final piece of clever play by Bell took her past two defenders late on before cutting back for Lemon to shoot inches wide from ten yards and MK saw out the match in some comfort to add a FAWNL League Cup semi final tie to the County Cup final spot earned last week.

On a day when numerous matches in the region were victims of the weather, the Amy Lane pitch was in fine shape and, as always, this excellent venue welcomed a good crowd to support the match.

Opener to be shown live Celtic will kick off their 2020 SWPL1 campaign under the flood and camera lights with their meeting with Glasgow City set to be aired live on BBC Alba. New Celts manager Fran Alonso’s first taste of Scotland’s top tier will come in Friday night football action as champions Glasgow City come to town for another competitive affair between the two.

The fixture will be rescheduled from the original date of Sunday 23rd February, to Friday, 21st February, with a 7.30pm kick off at K-Park in East Kilbride, with the Celts looking for a strong home backing as the new era at the club gets well and truly underway.

Celtic came out on top the last time the two met, with the Hoops running out 4-1 winners at K-Park, as goals from Natalie Ross, Josephine Giard and Sarah Ewens put the league leaders to the sword, ending their 72-game unbeaten run in the SWPL and a 32-match league winning streak.

Championship line up confirmed The 26 sides that will enter the 2020 SWF Championship have been confirmed. Both the SWF Championship North & South Leagues will feature 13 teams each.

The SWF Championship was created off the back of the 2019 Senior Consultation Process. These new leagues will sit under the Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL) and are part of the senior performance pathway.

The two divisions will line up as follows: Buchan Ladies, Cove Rangers, Dryburgh Athletic, Dundee West, Dunfermline Athletic, East Fife, Grampian Ladies, Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Kelty Hearts, Montrose, Stenhousemuir, Stonehaven, Westdyke.

Airdrie, Ayr United, BSC Glasgow, Clyde, Edinburgh Caledonia, Edinburgh City, Falkirk, Galtcairn, Livingston, Morton, Renfrew, St Mirren, United Glasgow.

The league season gets underway this coming Sunday (9th February) with a full set of fixtures in each division. The teams will also compete in a League Cup competition, which commences next Sunday.

Scotland Under-17 squad Pauline Hamill has named her Scotland Under-17 squad for a friendly tournament in Pinatar, Spain, next week. Scotland open up against Poland on Tuesday 11 February and then take on Sweden two days later.

A final game, against opponents to be confirmed, will be played on Saturday 15 February.

London Football Awards nominees The London Football Awards, one of the most prestigious charity events in the footballing calendar, has revealed the nominations for this year’s awards.

Within the Women’s Player of the Year category, Chelsea take on Arsenal with three nominations against Arsenal’s two. Vivianne Miedema and Beth Mead are up against Chelsea trio Beth England, Erin Cuthbert and Magdalena Eriksson.

The Manager of the Year award sees Chelsea’s Emma Hayes up against her male counterpart Frank Lampard, with Arsenal’s title winning boss Joe Montemurro also on the list.

The London Football Awards was set up to support Willow, the national charity set up by Bob Wilson and his wife Megs, to support seriously ill 16-40-year-olds to fulfil uplifting and unforgettable Special Days.

The event celebrates the very best of London’s football and honours all aspects of the game, from Manager of the Year and Young Player of the Year, through to Women’s Player of the Year, and many more.

Bexhill lift Sussex Trophy Bexhill United Ladies have won the Sussex Women’s Challenge Trophy for the first time in their history with a 2-0 victory over Oakwood Ladies at Culver Road on Thursday night.

‘Semper Paratus’ meaning ‘Always Ready’ is the slogan that is embroidered on the Bexhill badge and that seemed very much the case when United came flying out the starting blocks from the first whistle. Bexhill pressed Oakwood high and didn’t allow them to play the possession football that United manager, Katie Wilde, had spoke so highly of them doing in the build-up.

It was Oakwood however that forced the game’s first big chance when Chloe Higham spotted Keila Tucker off her line and went for an audacious lobbed effort that just clipped the post and went wide. From then, Oakwood began to build in confidence and came close once more when Jade Page leaped highest from a corner to head agonisingly over the bar.

However, for all the pressure Oakwood put on, Bexhill always seemed to have an answer and their back-line looked determined not to leak any goals.

Higham came close again with a curled effort just wide of the mark but it was Bexhill who managed to strike first right on the stroke of half-time. Knight, in lots of space out wide, decided she was going to give Hope Laker her first real test and struck from range looping over the Oakwood ‘keeper, into the back of the net.

As you would expect, Bexhill got the second-half underway in plenty of confidence and they almost doubled their lead straight away when Michaela Bryant dragged a shot ever so slightly wide of Laker’s far post.

Oakwood were determined to show the cup tie wasn’t over and when Lauren Tyler decided to test Tucker from distance with a free-kick, her parried save looked destined to fall to an Oakwood attacker, but Bexhill survived and cleared.

For all the efforts Oakwood put in, the defence was starting to look shaky and when Lauren Swarbrooke was allowed through on goal, one-on-one with Laker, she wasn’t able to capitalise and struck wide. This was followed by another long range effort from Knight who, with confidence from her earlier goal, forced Laker into a full stretch fingertip save. From the resulting in swinging corner, Killick-Bird headed off her own goal-line for Oakwood but only into the path of Pier who was there to poach the ball home and ensure a less nervy end for United.

As the game drifted into injury time, it looked as though Oakwood might snatch some late salvation when Ioana Vilciu was played through one-on-one with Tucker, however, the Bexhill stopper leaped to the ground brilliantly to ensure her clean-sheet was to be kept intact.

Female Game group launched Following the announcement at the end of 2019 that Plymouth Marjon had successfully become a Women’s High Performance Football Centre, Cornwall FA was thrilled to see the first event take place on Thursday 30th January.

Hosted at Cornwall FA’s offices, this event launched the ‘Female Game L1-L2’ coaches group, with eight coaches currently involved with the women and girls’ game considering how they work with their players, linking to the FA Four Corner model.

The event enabled coaches who work in different clubs and with different age groups to come together to share their successes, challenges and support each other as a group moving forwards.

Vicky Fisher, Women and Girls Football Development Officer at Cornwall FA, said: “We’ve had great success over the past year with engaging and supporting our volunteer workforce in the women and girls’ game and it’s fantastic to be able to link with Plymouth Marjons FA WHPFC to offer a high quality programme of support for these coaches.”

Natasha Mills, Coach Development Officer, added: “It was fantastic to see the coaches engaging with the workshop, all of whom have a thirst for developing and learning. They are brilliant advocates for female player development in Cornwall and I am excited to continue the work with these coaches.”

Moving forwards the group will support each other with guidance and help from the FA coach mentor team through 1:1 support sessions, group sessions and workshops. With the energy, excitement and enthusiasm on display within the first session it’ll be fantastic to see the group develop and progress throughout the season.

We talk to…..

Adele Hooper (Larkhall Athletic)

Larkhall Athletic moved themselves up the FAWNL Division One South West table on Sunday with a 2-0 win away to Maidenhead United.

We talked to Larkhall striker Adele Hooper, who scored one of the goals in their win over Maidenhead, and whilst admitting that the team was not quite up to full match sharpness after a lack of games in recent weeks, overall she is very happy with the way the season has gone so far for the Larks following a number of changes over the summer: AH: Thank you, we played well in areas. But as you can imagine with this being our second game back since Christmas and not playing for seven weeks, we were not at our best. We got the three points and that’s the main thing.

AH: Yeah, I must admit it feels good to be back on the scoresheet as I have not had the best of starts to the season. Hopefully it will continue through to the end of the season.

AH: It was good! A long time coming, credit to Maidenhead, they gave us a much better game than the start of the season and made us work hard.

AH: It is always going to be a hard game against Cheltenham. I think both teams always want to beat each other. We as a team will be up for the game and we know it will be a battle for 90 minutes.

AH: The next two weeks are most certainly going to be tough, five games when you have not been playing regularly will challenge us as a team. I think it will give us a very good idea of how the season will go. However, the league is the most important to us and we aim to finish top three. The County Ccup game against Yeovil again will be a challenge for us and hopefully a game where we can prove ourselves as a team what we are capable of.

AH: Hmmmm, good question! To be honest, Southampton are a very good team who are most likely looking for promotion and to work their way up to the Women’s Super League. However, we have played Southampton twice now, once at home in the cup where we lost 3-1 and away in the league. However, the away game where we lost did not reflect well on us as a team. We had the bare eleven along with key players missing, I think we will give them a better game at home again in the return fixture. Having said this, I personally think Southampton will most likely win the league this year if they maintain their performances.

AH: Yes, I think it has been a real positive with Jay [Powell] coming in and coaching us. We had a massive squad at the start, but as you know, players leave. We had a great bunch of girls and all fighting for our positions.

l really rate our new players that have come in and especially Katie, our youngest member in our team. She has showed her skills, strength and quality when she has played. I think in time she will be regularly starting player and is definitely one who can make impact on the pitch.

Cumberland FA Women’s League The 2020 season is almost upon us, and entries are now open for Women’s 9v9 Teams to enter the Cumberland FA Women’s League ahead of fhe AGM in February.

The Cumberland FA are inviting teams, existing and new to enter the 2020 midweek season which is due to begin in April.

Paul Carrigan commented: “We have already had some interest from new teams across Cumberland and we’re looking forward to seeing the league grow offering more women the chance to play football within the county.”

This year, clubs are asked to complete an online registration system for league entries via the Cumberland FA website. Please note the entry should be completed by the main contact no later than Friday 14th February 2020.

We are also asking for existing member clubs to give us some feedback on the 2019 season as well as proposals or rule changes for the new season.

East Midlands League closed the gap on the top three in the Premier Division with a 3-0 victory against . The visitors had gone into the game in improved form but went down to a Shoniqua Barnes double and Megan Howard. Meanwhile, a second half equaliser from a 1-1 draw against , Francesca Partridge earned who had earlier taken the lead through Meadow Barton. returned to action with another victory and this has taken them six points clear at the top of Division One North. Lauren Churcher bagged a hat-trick along with Amie Barnes-Ford, Elise Keyworth and Nadina Green as Hykeham won 6-1 against , who had taken an early lead through Natasha Leach. Natalie Aird, Laura Flecknor and Abby Westerman all scored as defeated 3-1 and scored eight times without reply past , Sophie Howe and Abbie Staples each hitting hat-tricks along with Ashleigh Davies-Lynch and Melissa East. hold onto the leadership of Division One South despite going down to a 5-0 defeat at the hands of . New optimism for Belles While mainstream media were concentrating on the end of an era at the top of the women’s game with Nick Cushing signing off at Manchester City, whose 2-1 home win over Arsenal kept City top of the FA Women’s Super League, there was a game of great contrast at Doncaster Rovers Belles for whom it was Andy Butler’s second league game in charge of a club whose fortunes (or lack of a fortune) have been much affected by WSL licensing criteria.

Belles lost their place in the top tier several years ago when usurped by City who submitted a much better bid when the WSL was expanded to two tiers. Then, more recently, finances proved the downfall of Belles who finished clear champions of WSL 2 in 2018, but were denied promotion and with much happening behind the scenes that summer, there was a mass exodus of players and Belles’ continuation on the fixture list remained in great doubt for some weeks.

Belles “dropped” from tier two into the FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division, but their squad consisted chiefly of players who had been playing in the WSL Development League along with the intake of those players who were stepping up to that level. The first part oblast season was not unexpectedly tough for what could politely be termed novices at that level. A much improved second half of the season saw a marked improvement in form which offered hope of a miracle escape, but in the end it was not quite enough to avoid relegation.

Life in the fourth tier has been quite similar. Having been placed in Division One Midlands, Belles lost several players for whom games in Division One North would have been more friendly travel-wise due to their home location. So, summer 2019 saw another huge turnover in the playing squad. On field results before Christmas were fairly similar to that of the previous season, one major difference being that Belles entered the new year just above the relegation places due to slightly better results than those of Burton Albion and Solihull Moors.

By a quirk of fate caused by postponements and fixture rescheduling etc, Belles’ first two league games of 2020 ended up being make or break one against the bottom pair and in some ways as kind a start as Butler could have hoped for.

A 2-0 home win over bottom team Burton lifted Belles seven points clear of Solihull who travelled to Doncaster knowing that an away win would have them breathing down Belles’ necks, especially if they could follow it up with a victory this weekend they, themselves, played Burton.

Solihull made a bright start. Eboni Fowkes got in a shot which was comfortably saved by home keeper Ellie Sharpe who shortly after had to be alert to keep out an inswinging corner at her near post.

Belles went ahead on 12 minutes when Hannah McWilliams fired home following an assist by Jasmine Saxton in the aftermath to an attack which saw Nadia Khan’s strike rebound off the woodwork.

There was a right scramble just past the midway point in the first half which ended with Solihull keeper Fran Vitale eventually claiming the ball with Khan the Belles player closest to getting contact for her team. Kathryn Pagan somehow failed to level several minutes later as she was unable to force the ball home following a shot by Fowkes which was going just wide and much to the relief of Belles, Sharpe was able to claim the ball virtually on the line.

For game of such importance, both teams were showing great willingness to attack. Eva Madarang fetched a fine save out of Vitale who turned the ball on to her left upright. Saxton made it 2-0 ten minutes before the interval when she sidestepped Vitale to slot home. There was further joy for Belles five minutes when Chloe Starling met Kirsty Smith’s right sided corner with a thumping header which hit the underside of the bar and bounced down with it being several seconds before the assistant referee signalled the ball had crossed the line. Pagan then fetched a save out of Sharpe and the interval arrived with Belles in a strong position, but mindful that they had enjoyed moments of good fortune in their own box.

The second half was much more one-sided in Belles’ favour, the hosts extending their advantage to four with a shot from Saxton on 50 minutes. Vitale had a busy second half and played her part in restricting Belles from recording a much higher score. The game’s fifth and final goal came a few minutes from time and was a deserved reward for substitute Emily Burgin who was lively after coming on and had twice forced saves before finally netting. Vitale had been rescued by the woodwork when Charlotte Gill’s shot hit the bar.

One of Solihull’s most probing moves of the second half came just past the hour when Fowkes broke and was brought down just inside the box by Tori Thomas, the referee initially pointing to the spot, but Belles’ then 4-0 lead was preserved thanks to a flag for offside.

So, Belles go into this Sunday’s game at Sporting Khalsa with both teams part of a quartet on 13 points, ten points clear of second bottom Solihull. While Belles are not yet mathematically safe from relegation, they have a welcome safety cushion and the mood in the camp is one of much optimism.
