The Women’s Philanthropy Board (WPB) was established in 2002 with the mission of inspiring, educating, and enabling individuals to: develop their full leadership potential; achieve independence as financial decision makers and donors; serve as mentors for future generations of philanthropists; and broaden the base of financial support for the College of Human Sciences. Today, it serves as the flagship division of the Cary Center for the Advancement of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies, an academic center in the Auburn University College of Human Sciences.

WPB achieves its mission by: hosting educational programs that focus on personal financial sustainability and philanthropic engagement; sponsoring mentoring initiatives for Auburn University students such as the WPB Mentee Program and Student Philanthropy Board; and, practicing collective philanthropy in support of the College of Human Sciences through the awarding of scholarships and philanthropic impact grants, including more than $637,000 to date.

The Women’s Philanthropy Board is funded through the generosity of more than 180 individuals and 25 Corporate and Business Partners. Funding from these donors supports the planning and implementation of WPB’s diverse educational programming; engaging and impacting Auburn students through WPB sponsored mentoring programs; passing through philanthropic giving to the College of Human Sciences; hosting opportunities for WPB members to network with like-minded individuals; recruiting individuals and businesses to join in financial support of WPB; and operating expenses of WPB. The 2016-2017 WPB Annual Report gives WPB Members, Corporate Partners, and Business Partners a snapshot of WPB’s activities during the past year. These programs would not be possible without the support of WPB donors. WPB’s Men’s Auxiliary, The Phils, celebrated its third anniversary with the publication of the 2017 Phils calendar. The newest edition featured the newest member’s of the organization and again provided an opportunity for the men featured to share why they were inspired by the Women’s Philanthropy Board and wanted to be a “Phil.”

Since inception, more than 50 men have joined in their support of WPB’s mission to educate and inspire individuals to be financially sustainable and philanthropically engaged. These men represent a variety of professional positions and are philanthropic leaders for Auburn University and their own communities and the world.

During the summer of 2017, the fourth edition, was in production and features an additional 12 men who share in their desire to support WPB, the College of Human Sciences, and Auburn University. The 2018 calendar will be debuted during the 4th Annual Burgers and Bowties party on Thursday, October 12, 2018.

The theme for WPB’s 2016-2017 educational programming was Enrich the World Through Service and this year’s keynote speakers personified that topic.

WPB’s programs kicked off with the 2016 WPB Fall Luncheon featuring Bruce Pearl, head coach of Auburn men's basketball. Coach Pearl inspired the audience with stories from his life, his career, and his personal philanthropic mission.

An avid supporter of children’s health causes, Coach Pearl has been an outstanding advocate for Children’s Harbor. His “Bruce Pearl Fore the Children Golf Classic” has raised almost three-quarters of a million dollars in its first three years in support of children with serious illnesses and their families.

As an ambassador for Auburn University, Pearl has lived by his personal mantra “You can’t served unless you are called upon.” Many nonprofit organizations have called on Coach Pearl to raise money or awareness in support of their missions and he has been selfless in his service to others at the University and in the area and beyond.

WPB’s 15th Annual Spring Symposium and Luncheon was held in April 2017 and featured Marlo Thomas as the luncheon keynote speaker. In addition to her work as an award-winning actress, author, and advocate, Thomas has carried on her father’s legacy of advocacy for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the organization he founded in 1962.

Thomas shared that “the idea of helping your neighbor is a very important belief system to give to your children and to use in your own life. And you can’t expect that other people are going to do it. Philanthropy is something that should really be in everybody’s home.”

The annual luncheon was preceded by the Spring Symposium featuring keynote speaker Paula Polito, of UBS Wealth Management Americas, who shared information on generational approaches to family finances and philanthropy.

Polito also moderated a multi-generation panel discussion featuring Janet Bodnar, editor of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine, Charles Pick, Auburn entrepreneur and philanthropist, and Whitney Griswold Califf, nonprofit professional and community advocate.

Each year, WPB hosts a series of smaller Roundtable sessions that focus on a specific educational topic and provide a networking opportunity for attendees. For 2017, WPB hosted three Roundtable sessions:

Does Your Insurance Have You Covered?

This session, led by WPB Benefactor member Kathy Powell, focused on the proper use of property and casualty insurance and also discussed why personal liability umbrella insurance is an important financial investment.

Cleaning Out Your Financial Attic This session, sponsored by The Phils and led

by WPB Phil Greg Doepke, provided insight on organizing and simplifying your financial life and how to avoid leaving a financial mess for your heirs.

Modern Manners This session, led by Nancy Bernard, provided a refresher course on professional and personal dining etiquette and included a modern take on polishing and perfecting dining manners.

www.carycenter.auburn.edu/wpb As part of Auburn University’s official commemoration of 125 years of Auburn Women, WPB is proud to feature alumna, Jeanne Robertson, an awardwinning professional speaker and author specializing in hilarious humor based on her life experiences. She utilizes her positively funny style to illustrate that a sense of humor is much more than a laughing matter. It is a strategy for success. As Miss North Carolina 1963, she competed in the Miss America Pageant where she was named Miss Congeniality. It was her participation in, and perhaps even her losing of the Miss America title, that turned Jeanne’s life into a succession of events which led her to be one of the funniest, busiest, and most popular professional speakers in America today.

IMPORTANT NOTES: This event will have a later start than normal WPB Luncheons and will begin at 12:30 pm. Due to construction at The Hotel and Conference Center, on-site parking will be extremely limited. Please consider car-pooling and allow extra time for off-site parking.

2016-2017 MENTORING INITIATIVES

2016-2017 PHILANTHROPIC IMPACT

During the 2016-2017 year, WPB sponsored two primary mentoring opportunities for Auburn University students who are interested in learning more about philanthropy, financial sustainability, and nonprofit leaders.

The Student Philanthropy Board (SPB), in its third year, is a preprofessional student organization supporting students in the Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies minor and students who are interested in philanthropy and nonprofit leadership.

During the 2016-2017 year, SPB sponsored several awareness and community service projects and educational programs including: planning and hosting a National Philanthropy Day awareness event on campus; participated in community service projects such as volunteering at the AUMC food pantry; researching ,writing, and awarding grant proposals; and learning from guest speakers including: Jean Paul Bazansanga, a Rwandan national who established a nonprofit organization in Rwanda called Vision for Life ICYUSA with the mission to "drive sustainable development through youth empowerment," Daria Monroe, Executive Director of Women’s Hope Medical Clinic, who spoke about grant writing skills and processes, and Nonet Reese, co-owner and broker, Three Sixty Real Estate, who spoke about importance of business owners being involved in philanthropy and community service programs.

The WPB Mentee Program provides opportunities for Auburn University students to attend WPB educational programs. WPB seeks sponsorships for students from WPB members and other event attendees through the purchase of additional tickets or as part of a table purchase. The “mentee” and “sponsor” are matched

by WPB and they then have the opportunity to connect with one another by email prior to the event. WPB hopes that these mentees and mentors develop lasting friendships and mentoring opportunities.

During this academic year, more than 140 mentees attended WPB’s educational programs. More than 90 of these students were sponsored to attend the events by individual WPB members with the remaining sponsored by the general membership of WPB. "Having prior experience writing grants allowed not only my organization to have confidence in me, but gave me confidence in myself to write a grant asking for $100,000 within my first month on the job. Writing grants is vital to any organization and I'm so thankful I am able to contribute due to my past exposure as a Student Philanthropy Board member."

WPB Mentoring Initiatives were recipients of a $4,000 gift this year from a WPB member. This gift funded SPB’s activities and provided sponsorship opportunities for at least 20 students to attend this year’s WPB educational programs. It was part of a five year pledge of support for WPB’s Mentoring Initiatives.

Each year, as part of its mission to broaden the base of financial support to the College of Human Sciences, WPB demonstrates its commitment to practicing collective philanthropy through the awarding of student scholarships and philanthropic impact grants. In 2017, WPB crossed an impressive threshold by passing through $90,000 in scholarships and grants. This marked the largest single year commitment from WPB to students and programs in the College. In addition to its annual giving, WPB has been the inspiration for 10 College of Human Sciences endowments with the donors recognizing WPB in the title of the endowments. Since it’s inception in 2002, WPB has given almost $638,000 to the College, including the establishment of a $100,000 WPB Scholarship Endowment.

CHS Student Recruitment Receptions $1,000 This grant will support funding for hosting two CHS Student Recruitment Receptions to be hosted by local WPB members or CHS alumni in Birmingham, Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia. These two locations represent major feeder areas for students applying to and enrolling in the College of Human Sciences. The purpose of these receptions will be to recruit students to the College by sharing information about degree programs and career opportunities available through the College.

Potential students and parents will be invited to meet representatives from the College as well as learn about specialized program initiatives, study abroad opportunities and student services.. These events will be a part of the expanded recruitment efforts in the College, which is aimed at increasing the number and quality of students enrolled in the College of Human Sciences.

CHS Preview Days $4,000 This grant will support enhanced undergraduate recruitment efforts in the College of Human Sciences by introducing high school seniors to the degree programs in the College of Human Sciences. This goal will be accomplished by connecting prospective students and their parents with CHS student ambassadors, faculty, staff, and academic advisors in the College during a daylong on-campus event held two times during the fall semester. The target audience will be high school seniors who have applied to Auburn/CHS, been accepted, or paid their tuition deposit.

CHS Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program $10,000 The Auburn University Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program provides opportunities for talented students to become involved in faculty-guided research.

Specifically, this program is designed to facilitate and promote undergraduate student engagement in research and scholarship; provide professional development activities for undergraduate researchers; offer venues for showcasing the scholarly activities of undergraduate students; and provide financial support (stipends and project funds), for undergraduate students engaging in intensive research projects. Research is a fundamental component of undergraduate education, particularly for students whose career goals require advanced degrees. Participating students benefit greatly from the cognitive stimulation and career opportunities that result from working closely with a faculty mentor on a scholarly research project.

Mission Possible Fund $50,000 Grant will provide funds to continue support of the Mission Possible Fund, a fund for excellence in support of strategic priorities as determined by the dean. This fund will provide the dean with opportunities to address needs as they arise in the College such as technology, staffing, student support, alumni and development, communications and marketing, and faculty/staff development.
