Publisher’s Notes

Trust the Squirrels! Happy November! As I am writing this, it’s 76 degrees outside and sunny. Absolutely a beautiful autumn Nebraska day. Because Women’s Edition is a print magazine, our deadlines are well in advance of the publication date. It’s not like the internet, where you can write something and have it show up immediately. So even though this is our November issue, I am writing this in the first week of October. Now, the reason I’m sharing this with all of you is that I have been hearing from LOTS of people about what a tough winter this is going to be. I’m not sure where everyone is getting their information, but they are saying lots of cold, lots of snow. My question is: How can they predict an entire season when they can’t predict the weekend weather? Is it coming from the Farmer’s Almanac? Tea leaves? Scientists? Who knows? As for me, I’m watching the squirrels. They are very, very busy. They are also getting very fat! Roxy Orr, my Operations Manager, also gives me the play-by-play on the squirrels in her backyard. Those critters have become very proficient at stealing food from her bird feeder. She has one squirrel who has learned how to hang upside down in order to get the morsels he’s after. She concurs that they are burying lots of nuts and are plumping up. Let’s hope they are wrong…but just in case, put those scrapers and blankets in your car, make sure your snow blower has been serviced, and dig out the long underwear. Yikes! The great news about November is that it also brings us Thanksgiving, which may be my very favorite holiday. Family time. Reconnecting with friends. A break in our routine. Ever since I started Women’s Edition in 1986, we have closed the office for a four-day weekend over the Thanksgiving holiday. I remember “back in the day,” at other office jobs I had, the staff was expected to show up for work the Friday after the holiday. I always felt it was silly. No one could get anything accomplished because of the food coma from the day before. But we came in, pretended like we were working, and got out of there as soon as we could. I didn’t want to play that game at my company. Though it’s never been an “official” day off, we have never unlocked the doors the day after Thanksgiving. I hope everyone has a fantastic holiday. Happy Thanksgiving to my entire family and all of you, dear readers! We’ll talk next month.

Classic Pumpkin Pie Blend together one 15-ounce can of pumpkin puree, 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon of real maple syrup, 1 can of evaporated milk, 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/4 cup of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/4 teaspoon of cloves, and 1/2 teaspoon of all spice or pumpkin pie spice. Pour into an unbaked prepared pie shell. Bake on a cookie sheet for 15 minutes at 425 degrees. Turn the oven down to 350 degrees and bake for another 40–45 minutes. Cool. Refrigerate. Pass the whipped cream. Glazed Carrots Peel and chunk cut 6 carrots and 3 yams. Put 1 stick of butter and 1 cup of brown sugar in a baking dish. Add the veggies. Cover. Bake at 350 degrees for 40–50 minutes. Roasted Cranberry Sauce Mix together 1 bag of rinsed cranberries and 1 cup of sugar. Pour onto a foil-lined cookie sheet. Roast at 375 degrees for 30–40 minutes, stirring several times, until the berries begin bursting. Let cool. Pour into a bowl and add 1–2 Tablespoons of brandy or orange juice. Mix well. Cover and refrigerate. Oven-Baked Turkey Mix 1 Tablespoon of paprika with 1/4 cup of oil or melted butter. Slather the bird with this mixture. Stuff the cavity with sliced lemon, onion, celery, and sage leaves (or make a bed of these veggies and put the turkey on top). Roast at 350 degrees until the internal temperature is 165 degrees—use a meat thermometer to check! Let the turkey rest for 20 minutes while you use the pan juices to make gravy. Place the juices in a saucepan, adding pepper and salt to taste. Mix 1/4 cup of flour with 3 cups of water or milk. Add to the saucepan and stir until thickened. Pumpkin Cake Mix one 15-ounce can of pumpkin puree with one 12-ounce

can of evaporated milk, 4 eggs, 1 and 1/2 cups of sugar, 2 teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Pour into a greased 9x13-inch cake pan. Sprinkle 1 cup of chopped pecans over the mixture, then pour in 1 box of yellow cake mix (plain, no pudding). Drizzle 1 stick of melted butter over everything. Bake at 350 degrees for 60–80 minutes (start testing with a toothpick at 60 minutes). Cool. Serve with whipped cream.

Supreme Apple Cake Plump 1/2 cup of raisins or currants in hot water for 5 minutes. Drain and pat dry. Set aside. Peel, core, and grate 2 apples (Granny, Gala, Jonathan—your choice); set aside. In a large bowl, mix 2 cups of flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon of dry ginger, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. In a mixing bowl, combine 10 Tablespoons of soft butter with 1 and 1/2 cups of sugar, 2 eggs, 1 cup of apple butter, and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla. Mix on low speed. Gradually add in the flour mix. Stir in the raisins and apples. Add 1 cup of chopped nuts, if you like. Pour into a well-greased Bundt-style pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 50–55 minutes (check for doneness with a toothpick). Cool for 5 minutes, then invert onto a serving platter. Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with a bit of confectioner’s sugar icing (1 cup of powdered sugar mixed with 1–3 teaspoons of milk or apple cider). Sweet Potato Pie Bake 2 sweet potatoes in the oven at 350 degrees for an hour. Cool. Scoop out the potato (you should have 2 cups) and mash. Add 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of ginger, 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg, a pinch of salt, 2 eggs, and 1 cup of heavy whipping cream (unwhipped). Pour into a prepared unbaked pie crust. Bake on a cookie sheet at 375 degrees for 20 minutes. Turn the heat down to 350 degrees and bake for another 30 minutes or until the center is set.

Warm Up to the Winter Fashion Forecast Everything Old Looks New Again

By Holly Bell

The coldest of seasons has its pros and cons, but I prefer to think positive thoughts about winter. We get to enjoy beautifully snow-laden trees and serene landscapes, along with cozy fires and yummy comfort food. There is no better feeling than wrapping up in a soft blanket and sipping hot cocoa or a special tea or coffee. Also, the importance of“dressing for the weather”gives us a bonus reason to pick up a few new warm wardrobe essentials.

This year, perhaps more than any other, we don’t have to sacrifice being cozy for the sake of fashion. Designers have found a way to meet the demand for both style and warmth. Puffer jackets have become a winter staple because of their unique ability to remain lightweight but incredibly warm. Even though I had doubts about this style when it was first introduced to the fashion scene a few years ago, I have now become a convert. There is a style of puffer coat for everyone—you just need to try them on. (Not everything that looks great also looks great on the hanger.) This year, puffers are arriving in stores in a gorgeous, bold rainbow of saturated colors and exciting prints. Power-print coats and jackets will be the focus for this year’s new coat trend. What do you wear with your new outerwear? Under your casual puffer coat, you can be sophisticated yet traditional by giving a nod to plaid skirts, turtlenecks, cable knit cardigans, and fitted blazers. What’s old is new again, and everything looks so fresh in new fabrications. Leggings have been around for ages but take on a new look with groundbreaking fabrics and fit options. Among the newest kitschy leggings to crave are faux leather leggings, stretch jersey flare leggings, and stirrup leggings to get a smooth tuck in those tall boots. Also looking great with boots and leggings will be long knit dresses. These are so comfortable, warm, and flattering. For a more 10

forgiving silhouette, choose a pull-on knit dress in an A-line cut. For a more daring look, choose a bodycon cut. Whatever style you choose, this soft and versatile dress Apparel = Jewelry is sure to be your new favorite. Polish Pottery Knitwear is always a winter staple, but this year’s cable knitwear seems to be U… the top choice for bundling up. For dresses, matching sets, crop sweaters, and fy YO i t u cardigans, cable knit is the look to shop for. To get the look, let’s pretend we are Bea going for a ski weekend in Aspen. First, we will need to purchase the very on-trend Après-Ski sweater. Then, make your choice from a wide selection of punchy shades and stripes. This will completely top off our winter sweater needs! Sometimes, your amazing puffer coat is simply not formal enough. For these cases, designers have reverted to the “tailored on tailored” style with a menswear-inspired long wool coat. Try a matching dress underneath or loose pant and vest. Yes, a vest! Vests are an important look again. Wear it alone or with a blouse, a nd y o u or incorporate that sweater we were just talking about. Knit vests are also enjoying r surroundings at… some popularity. When it comes to outerwear, why not enjoy even more variety? A favorite option for this winter will be a luxe version of faux fur. You will find chunky coats and jackets in a range of fun-to-wear colors and styles that you will want to sink into. The boot trend this winter, even if you never see snow, is the lug-soled boot. Done in ankle, mid-calf, and knee lengths, this sturdy boot leaves you on point and ready for any type of weather. This boot looks cool with just about everything, even skirts and dresses with leggings. For a more conservative boot, choose the always-stylish, slim and sleek knee-high boot with a chunky heel. Whether you are attending intimate at-home celebrations or enjoying the company of more than a few guests, holiday looks are sure to put you in a good mood this year. You want to shimmer elegantly without showing too much skin—this is not club dressing! Think long trousers and higher necks with sequins and glimmerStop in today! ing fabrics. Beautiful jackets with beading and sequined trim are timeless and look Hilltop Plaza—2947 S 108th Street glamorous on everyone. 402-301-7103 Let’s think positive thoughts about the upcoming winter. Slow down and give yourself time to appreciate each of the beautiful seasons we have the good fortune to enjoy in the Midwest. Get cozy with your loved ones and treasure the special BeauJoyau.indd 1 10/7/21 moments of joy that only winter can bring. Deka Lash Extend Your Look

By Angella A. Arndt

Are your eyelashes thin or short? Do they refuse to stay curled? Would you love to find a solution that will give you lush, beautiful lashes? The Deka Lash team specializes in eyelash extensions and enhancements. They can transform your eyelashes to achieve your best look. Owner Moriah Brookshier grew up in Elgin, Nebraska. After attending Wayne State College and the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Moriah spent the first part of her career working in health care, as a cardiac floor nurse, as a Six Sigma quality-control specialist, and as a consultant. After years in health care, Moriah was ready for a career change. She had always been interested in opening a business, discovered the Deka Lash franchise, and decided it was the right fit. She opened her first location in 2019, at 145th Street and West Maple Road. This year, she was delighted to open a second location, at 169th Street and Wright Plaza. “Our product isn’t just eyelashes,” Moriah says. “It’s about building self-confidence for women when they feel and look their best.” Moriah embraces a philosophy of empowering women. “As a woman leading a small business, I take pride in spreading the same message to our employees that we share with our customers. I believe in supporting women through professional and personal growth. Our culture centers around support and positivity.” What, exactly, are eyelash extensions? Unlike false eyelashes, which come on a strip and are applied on or near the lash line, eyelash extensions are applied to individual natural lashes using a medical-grade adhesive. These extensions are high-quality synthetic fibers that are available as a single lash or a fan of lashes. Deka Lash offers four types of extensions: Classic, TrueVolume, Hybrid, and TrueXpress. Clients may opt for lash styles such as natural, wispy, cat eye, and doll eye. Each type may be customized for density, length, and curl to achieve the desired lash look. Classic lash extensions provide length and curl to natural lashes without extra volume to achieve a mascara look without mascara. TrueVolume lash extensions offer a customized dramatic look, using a wide variety of multi-lash fan options to achieve the desired fullness, length, and curl. Hybrid lash extensions offer an option between Classic and TrueVolume. This option provides both length and dense volume. TrueXpress lash extensions provide a natural, full look and take half the time of a standard full-set appointment. These extensions are fuller but lighter than the Classic and less dramatic than TrueVolume. This option is excellent for people with busy schedules. In November 2021, Deka Lash will offer a new service: MegaVolume. This option will provide the boldest look, using multi-fans for clients who have very sparse natural 12

November 2021

Moria Brookshier, eyelashes or who want to take TrueVolume to Owner the next level. Deka Lash also offers lash lifts for people who are not good candidates for lash extensions because of allergies or medical concerns. Natural eyelashes are lifted and curled with a rod. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, individuals lose one to five eyelashes per day. Eyelashes have a growth cycle of six to 10 weeks, during which lashes grow, fall out, and replace themselves. Eyelash extensions shed along with the natural lash to which they have adhered. Therefore, Deka Lash recommends that clients return every two to three weeks for a refill. After three weeks, clients will need to receive another full set. Lash lifts last approximately four weeks. Membership plans are available as a cost-efficient method of paying for lash refills. Regular maintenance will ensure that your eyelashes continue to look their best. What should you look for when choosing eyelash extension services? “Quality of work and experience of employees is crucial,” Moriah advises. “We provide consistency of experience to ensure that our clients come out looking and feeling great.” Clients should inquire about education and licensing requirements for employees. “Our lash artists are required to have an active cosmetology or aesthetician license in the state of Nebraska,” Moriah notes. “Our artists also complete an intensive training program before providing services.” Client training is also essential to good outcomes. “We educate our clients so they understand what it means to have eyelash extensions. A Woman’s Work

Mama’s Melancholy Thanksgiving Counting Our Blessings

By Sharon Knierim

Although Thanksgiving is regarded as a day of feasting and counting our many blessings, occasionally we find ourselves introduced to challenges in the very midst of merrymaking or daily life. Fate steps in, daring us to be brave and keep on smiling. So it was on Thanksgiving Day, 1965. A large family like ours always had many blessings to count and, of course, there were always large quantities of food involved. Like any other cook, Mama took a great deal of pride in planning, preparing, and serving the annual Thanksgiving dinner to family members and a few friends who did not already have holiday plans. Preparing a Thanksgiving dinner is no easy task. Planning this meal involves the number of guests, seating arrangements, traditional foods to serve, and a host of other chores to be addressed. For one reason or another, it seemed that Thanksgiving dinner always happened at our house, and I am sure that Mama took this occasion (as all cooks do) as an opportunity to display her culinary expertise. As always, everything was delicious, guests were happily filled to the brim, and the entire event went off without a hitch. In the fall of 1965, however, one of our brothers had received his notice to report for military duty on Thanksgiving night. Although we were not unpatriotic, military service was not the norm for our farming community. Please remember that 1965 was

full of dark days during the Vietnam Conflict, which caused a high degree of uncertainty among many Americans. Despite this, our brother, being a healthy young man, was willing to serve his country and did not shirk his responsibility. He was proud, I am sure. Mama was ambivalent. One day, she, too, was filled with pride; the next day, she faced the dread of uncertainty. Four years was a long time for a son to be away from home, and all mothers want their children to remain close at hand. Courageously, Mama baked the pumpkin pies and whipped the heavy cream for toppings. She peeled the potatoes and tried to keep on smiling, knowing that on that very evening, her son would be leaving for places unknown. Mothers of grown children love to see them and enjoy their day to day accomplishments and assist with any problems. Did her uncertainty place a cloud over the festivities? No,

not at all. There were still plenty of blessings to count. We were all healthy. The crops had been excellent and the markets had been generous. We were warm. Family and friends were all around us to lend support and care. We treasured that. I suppose the show must go on; and go on it did. It seems that there was more food on that dining room table on that Thanksgiving day than I had ever seen before. Everything tasted absolutely wonderful. Compliments for Mama’s cooking were heard all day long. Accolades began with everyone enjoying the aroma of roasting turkey. At the table itself, there were enough oohs and ahs to make any hostess pledge to repeat that very same meal next Thanksgiving. Of course, after dessert and coffee, there were oaths pledging to not eat another crumb for days, letting Mama know that she had fed her guests well. That Thanksgiving, Mama had pulled out all the stops! When Mama was preoccupied or worried, she would purse her mouth, which was already small. Her eyes were twinkly that day, but her tiny pursed mouth nearly betrayed her. She was thinking about her second-born son going so far from home. Her first-born son had served in the military, but it had been during peacetime service. This was different. Hours later, after all the fattened up, sated guests had retreated to their own homes and our brother had left to begin his military service, Mama went upstairs to his bedroom. There, on the floor beside his bed, were his denims, just as he had stepped out of them. Mama sat down on the edge of the bed and sobbed. “Just like a boy,” Mama murmured. That was her release. She began laughing, picked up those bunched-up denims and put them in the laundry (after checking the pockets). Four years later, Mama’s son had seen the world, been honorably discharged, and brought his fiancée to the Thanksgiving table. What joy! We loved the feeling, we loved having our brother home, we loved his fiancée, and everything seemed right with the world once again. There was so much to be thankful for at that table, making it nearly impossible to stop smiling long enough to chew Mama’s delicious food. If you are thankful for someone’s love, be sure to tell them on Thanksgiving. Have a wonderful holiday. WE Go Red - Make It Your Mission.indd 1

Chastain Otis Insurance & Financial Services Personal Protection, Peace of Mind

By Linda Sutherland

There’s no denying that price is one of the factors you need to keep in mind when you’re looking for the right insurance coverage. However, for true peace of mind, don’t forget to consider the value of high-quality customer service—a company that treats you like a person, not an account number, a company that will help you find the best coverage at the best price without forgetting the importance of greeting you with a smile at the door. You’ll find all this and more at Chastain Otis Insurance & Financial Services. Here, you can take care of all your insurance needs. Even filing claims can be a pleasant experience if you have the right guide. Lydia Sichmeller is a customer service agent and claims specialist at Chastain Otis. During her 30 years in the industry, Lydia has amassed a great deal of practical knowledge and experience, and she brings it all to the table when you come to see her. Insurance is complicated, and Lydia understands how it can be confusing to people who don’t have the years of experience that she has. She works diligently to make sure that her clients fully understand their coverage. “I walk my clients through their claims with compassion and empathy,” Lydia says. “I take pride in being the voice of calm during the turbulence of an accident or claim.” “When people endure a car accident, home fire, health issues, or whatever the case may be, I want to help them through the turmoil from start to finish. Without exception, people in peril are in shock. They need someone to help them through all the ups and downs of a claim.” That is Lydia’s mission—to take good care of those who need her assistance. In today’s market, many insurance agencies have switched to automated systems, which can make it difficult to reach an actual person to discuss a claim. That is not the case with Lydia. She is there, in person, to be your advocate and walk you through the process. Lydia’s advice will be specific to you and your personal situation, but she does offer more general advice that is good for everyone. For example, a car accident is an unfortunately common insurance issue. When you’re in an accident, panic can set in, making it hard to remember what to do first. Of course, if anyone is injured, call 911 immediately. In a safe area, check for damage to both vehicles, call the police, exchange information with the other driver, and—of course—call your insurance agent. Your agent will help you stay calm in this stressful moment and will tell you how to proceed. 18

Workers’ compensation can also be a confusing and Lydia Sichmeller, frustrating issue. This type of coverage is held Customer Service Agentby the employer to pay for expenses incurred Claims Specialist by workers who suffer an injury or illness that occurs as a direct result of doing their job. If you find yourself injured or ill from work, the most important thing is to get prompt medical treatment, whether it is emergency care or not. Another critical part of the process is to make sure you have medical records that document all the treatments and care regarding that injury. Be aware that some employees have a limited window in which to report a workplace injury (laws vary by state). Lydia has vast experience in workers’ compensation claims and can help you navigate a workers’ compensation claim journey. Lydia is a native of Orange County, California. She met her husband while he was living in California. They eventually moved to his home state of Nebraska because it was the place they wanted to raise their children. That positive family feel is also something that Lydia loves about her job. “Chastain Otis is a family-run business, and it truly feels like a family environment.” Outside of work, Lydia and her husband are involved in several community organizations. They believe in giving back and get a great deal of satisfaction from working with others who share common goals. Chastain Otis Insurance & Financial Services offers personal insurance, business insurance, auto insurance, home insurance, property insurance, and so much more. These independent insurance agents and claim specialists will meet your insurance needs and strive to settle your claims as efficiently as possible. The agency has been around for more than 80 years, so you can be confident that they’ll be here when you need them. Chastain Otis Insurance Agency & Financial Services is located at 10822 Old Mill Road, Suite 2, in Omaha. For more information, please call 402-3972500 or visit chastainotis.com.

The Journey Through Hormones A Woman’s Life Cycle

By Janette Calabro

We’ve all heard the menopause jokes—the funny and not-so-funny quips about hot flashes, short memories, and mood swings. It’s good to keep a sense of humor, but it’s also good to arm yourself with the facts about hormones during all stages of a woman’s life. From adolescence into adulthood, hormones can blindside us with physical and emotional symptoms, starting with the first menstrual cycle and ending with menopause. If you find yourself experiencing emotions that seem out of proportion to what’s actually happening, like crying at a commercial for puppy food or lashing out with a flash of anger about a minor infraction, it may be your hormones at work. Hormones affect activities of the physical and mental self, acting as messengers throughout the body. Though this is natural, it can also get out of hand. Not to worry—there are ways to tame those annoying little messengers. Let’s start from the beginning. Puberty is the first time we notice our hormones going wild. A girl’s brain releases hormones from the pituitary gland (a pea-sized gland perched right under the brain), pushing the ovaries to produce estrogen and progesterone. These hormones prepare a girl’s body for pregnancy. The child starts to turn into an adult, approaching sexual and reproductive maturity. When does it happen? It’s different for everyone. The hormonal changes of puberty often begin around age eight for girls, and changes may continue until approximately age 16. Girls can expect hair growth, increased acne, a growth spurt, the beginning of menstrual periods, and an increase in body fat mass. Girls don’t just get taller and curvier during puberty—there are emotional changes, too. Puberty is a time of uncertainty, and many adolescents feel overly sensitive and self-conscious. Peer pressure can create conflicting thoughts in teens as they search for identity—a place where they fit in the world. By the time a girl reaches puberty, her ovaries still contain around 300,000 eggs (down from the 1 million she was likely born with). During the menstrual cycle, one of those eggs begins a voyage through the fallopian tube and ends the journey in the uterus, where it waits to be fertilized. This process is called ovulation. If the egg is not fertilized, the uterus sheds unneeded blood and tissue. Bingo! There is the start of a woman’s menstrual cycle. It lasts for an average of five days every month, though the number of days varies from person to person. Symptoms during this time can include bloating, cramping, tenderness throughout the body, lack of energy, headaches, and mood swings. This pattern repeats itself until a woman’s hormones start to taper off into pre-menopause, menopause, and post-menopause. Every coin has two sides, right? That means that there are benefits that come from your hormones during the menstrual cycle, too. It’s not all bad! Overall, hormones actually help you age slower and lower your risk of heart disease, stroke, and other ailments that tend to show up after menopause. Hormones can help to time pregnancy opportunities during 20

November 2021

the fertile time of ovulation. Blood pressure goes down, and it’s a great time for bonding, connecting, and reflecting, not to mention better sexual relations. Women’s hormones serve important functions in reproducing and then feeding our babies through nursing. Progesterone plays a vital role in regulating the menstrual cycle. This hormone’s main job is to get the uterus ready for pregnancy. After ovulation each month, the lining of the uterus thickens in preparation for a fertilized egg. Hormone levels drop if the egg isn’t fertilized, and that’s when menstruation begins. Estrogen also helps regulate the menstrual cycle, monitoring how much the uterine lining grows. If there’s no fertilized egg, estrogen levels greatly decline; this, too, brings on your menstrual cycle. Clearly, you need both hormones to keep the cycle healthy. The physical and emotional impacts of hormones don’t end after puberty. During pregnancy, estrogen and progesterone are prominent. One reason for an estrogen increase is that the uterus and placenta create more blood vessels. In fact, a woman will produce more estrogen during her pregnancy than during the rest of life while not pregnant. Several years before menopause, women may experience a transition called perimenopause, when the ovaries start to make less estrogen. Perimenopause continues until menstruation stops completely. How long this process takes varies widely from person to person. For some women, perimenopause lasts a few months; for others, it could be a decade. During this phase of hormonal decline, periods become irregular, hot flashes set in, and breast tenderness is common, as are fatigue and irritability. Sleep disorders start to become more common, urinary frequency or leakage is often recurrent, and those dreaded night sweats (hot flashes in your sleep) may ensue. These symptoms can also carry over into menopause itself. Women are considered to be menopausal when they have gone 12 months without a menstrual period—after the irregular periods of perimenopause have ceased completely. This change is gradual, marking the milestone that is the end of fertility, often around the age of 50, though different for everyone. As hormones fluctuate, women notice differences in their bodies and emotions. Some women float through these changes with little problem, but most need a little help along the way. The classic sign that you may be on your way to menopause is unpredictability. In other words, periods

www.womensedition.com

may be heavier or lighter, they may come more often or less frequently, and the duration may be longer or shorter than usual. Some women enjoy sex more because they aren’t concerned about getting pregnant, while others feel less excited about sex. Weight gain that’s hard to lose, achy joints, memory loss, and depression and anxiety may also be part of the journey. This is a good time to visit your physician with specific questions about treatment options, if you haven’t done so already. Uterine fibroids, birth control pills, and hormone issues can cause abnormal bleeding, so it’s good to get an expert opinion. One of the most common doctor-ordered menopausal treatments is hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Replacing estrogen can ameliorate symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness, but, like any medical treatment, it comes with risks. Side effects of estrogen replacement can be mild and may include bloating, headaches, indigestion, leg cramps, vaginal bleeding, and breast tenderness. Extended HRT use has been associated with the risk of more serious issues, like blood clots or certain cancers; you should discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Systemic estrogen therapy comes in pill form, skin patches, cream, gel, or even as a skin spray. Low-dose vaginal rings or tablets are less risky, relieving dryness and hot flashes. Progesterone is often combined with estrogen to help with menopause symptoms, especially for women who still have a uterus. Progesterone thins out the lining of the uterus, which helps reduce chances of endometrial cancer. Even after menopause, hot flashes and vaginal dryness can stick

around for a few years. A combination HRT can balance out the hormone levels, helping with sleep, mood and temperature swings, memory, and bone loss prevention. There are different sources of progesterone, including a synthetic brand called progestin. Delivery methods include pill form, a cream absorbed through the skin, implanted pellets (the size of a grain of rice), and injectables. Talk with your doctor to find the best plan. No matter where you are in life—puberty, perimenopause, menopause, or post menopause—healthy lifestyle choices are a precursor to a healthy life. Though you’ve heard it before, it’s worth saying again: Eat a healthy diet, exercise, watch your stress levels, and don’t smoke. Limiting alcohol and caffeine or practicing deep breathing and meditation might help, along with a fan for night sweats. There are non-hormone prescriptions or natural remedies that you and your doctor can work into your health plan, too, such as black cohosh, CBD, red clover, ginseng, evening primrose, and pollen extract, to name a few. Be aware that not all herbal extracts or natural remedies are FDA-approved, and research may be limited. That’s why it’s important to consult with a professional, even for over-the-counter treatments. Whether you are waxing or waning in your hormonal journey, live your life as though each day is more important than the last. Healthy habits, healthy life! Stark Media Films Stark Media was born out of a six-year stint as IT/desktop support for a large credit card processing company. I then stumbled onto an opportunity to make “videos” for that same company. I said yes. My role was to produce in-house corporate marketing videos. Having no real experience as a videographer, I had to adopt the “fake it ‘til you make it” mentality...and it worked. Fast forward three years. The excitement was missing, I was yearning for more meaningful projects. I became complacent and uninspired. Although it did put food on the table, I yearned to produce something with more impact and meaning. Then along came another opportunity to help produce a short film about Alzheimers. That changed the game for me. This is what I was reaching for. Real stories, real people who inspire and provoke viewers. It was the most challenging endeavor I had done at the time. Understanding how to tell a strong story in the least amount of time, and how to engage the viewer for the duration of the piece, is not easy. Our purpose is to make something powerful, moving, and memorable. Recently, we produced a “Memory” video for a retired couple. Their story was captivating and powerful. Everybody has a story just waiting to be told. What’s your story?

“I have turned my passion into my profession and that is helping people live longer lives without pain and suffering.” NUCCA is a gentle, specific correction in the upper neck that takes the pressure off of the brainstem so that it and the entire nervous system can function properly.

Custom Gems Feel the Lure of Gemstones

By Linda Sutherland

Precious stones, semi-precious stones, crystals, geodes, fossils, minerals, silver, gold, rocks, carvings, cabochons—you’ll find it all at Custom Gems, Omaha’s most fascinating gemstone store. I have always been drawn to rocks and stones and gems. I’ve spent many wondrous times combing beaches and searching for glittering stones, and I have quite the collection to prove it, but to say that I was filled with awe and wonder upon first walking into this gorgeous shop is an understatement! Tim Kautsch, the proud owner and truly knowledgeable proprietor of Custom Gems, gave me a tour. There is so much here to take in! It will surely take several visits to get the full effect and absorb all that resides within the walls of this quality shop. When I say “quality,” I mean museum-quality pieces that are tucked in and around this treasure chest of a store. Tim is a Gemologist who purchased Custom Gems in 2009. He had previously been the manager of the store, so he knew his stuff long before he took the reins. Originally, the store was owned by Ed and Erma Pharoah, who shared a passion for rocks and minerals. Ed was an earth science teacher whose hobby of rock collecting and love of minerals led them to open the store in 1975. Erma taught silversmithing classes at the store and Ed taught lapidary classes. What is lapidary, you ask? It is the art and process involved in cutting, polishing, grinding, and engraving gems. The word comes from “lapis,” which is Latin for “stone,” and the earliest roots of lapidary may date back as far as a million years. Some people have long believed that certain precious stones could possess powers of healing and health benefits. Regardless of what you believe, there is no denying that few of us can resist the lure of precious stones. When the Pharoahs retired from Custom Gems, a “rockhound” by the name of Chuck Swanson became the next owner, making beautiful custom jewelry. Now, Tim works side-by-side with his brother, Kevin. Along with the craftsmen on their team, they have created a magical place. At first glance, you would never know how many services they provide at Custom Gems. Absolute Perfection Electrolysis Empowering You!

By Maria Harding

“I like giving people back their confidence,” says Mary Brennan, owner of Absolute Perfection Electrolysis. She knows how important it is to give clients control over their own body and appearance. Electrolysis is the only permanent hair removal method for every color and type of hair on all skin types, and Mary is a master practitioner. Mary has been a professional electrologist for 25 years. Her technical experience is unparalleled; in fact, her colleagues in the industry have elected her President of the Nebraska Electrology Association. Her educational background is in science and nursing, which helps inform her initial assessments. “We go over a little of their health and hormone history, to see if there may be a cause or a trigger” for the excess hair, she explains. Some chronic conditions, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome or a pituitary imbalance, can lead to excess hair growth. Mary asks about her clients’ stress levels and (for her female clients) whether they continue to menstruate. She asks how clients are currently removing hair and with what frequency, as well as whether they’re taking any prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal medications. “We talk for at least half an hour,” she shares. “If clients are comfortable with me, then they’ll be comfortable getting their treatments done.” Mary wants Absolute Perfection to be a sanctuary. With total confidentiality and empathy, she meets the cosmetic and emotional needs of women with hirsutism (male-pattern hair growth), men with excessively hairy backs or ears, and transgender women. “In fact, I’ve helped so many transgender women that I know how long it’s going to take and which hair is the most important to do first,” she relates. “I’ve also had people come to me who aren’t already connected with a good doctor or therapist, and I’m able to give referrals or more information.” There are three modalities that can be used to perform electrolysis—thermolysis, galvanic, and blend. Thermolysis uses quick bursts of heat, galvanic creates a chemical reaction through an electric current, and blend uses a combination of thermolysis and galvanic. “For body hair, I usually go with straight galvanic,” Mary says, “though blend is my primary choice; I think it’s a little gentler on the skin.” With a determined smile, she adds, “If I’m not getting the ‘kill rate’ I want with one modality, I’ll switch.” Does it hurt? “It’s warm, with a bit of a sting,” Mary says. “You could take Tylenol or ibuprofen before treatment, if you want to. If you’ve been a constant tweezer, the sensation isn’t that big a deal.” The desire to be rid of unwanted body hair often outweighs any discomfort. “I can guarantee that I can kill every hair,” promises Mary, but it’s not a one-and-done process. Because a hair can only be permanently eliminated while it is active-

ly growing, it will take several visits to Absolute Perfection before each follicle is caught at the optimal point in its cycle. For this reason, “I would say the minimum for any area is probably eight months,” says Mary. “When you start Mary Brennan, BSN,CPE, LE, Owner treatments, you may come once a week for 30 minutes. As you go along, appointments get farther apart and appointment time shortens.” She adds that the end result can be delayed by what clients do between appointments. “If you’re tweezing or waxing in between, I may have to wait for that hair to come up again,” she explains. Electrolysis is safe; there really are no health exclusions. Some sources advise that individuals with pacemakers use caution, but Mary has worked with clients with these devices without incident. “If you have any implanted device, I need an okay from your doctor,” she clarifies. Though studies indicate it is harmless for pregnant women to undergo electrolysis, Mary opts for heat-only modalities, rather than galvanic, as an extra degree of caution with her pregnant patients. Clients should look for an electrologist who is licensed in their state by the American Electrology Association (AEA), and they should expect a clean and sterile environment. Mary explains that all the needles she uses are disposable, and tweezers and other tools have been sterilized in an autoclave. “I also wear gloves and a mask, and I wipe down all surfaces between each person,” she says. Individuals who go through this journey find that their outward appearance more confidently reflects their inner beauty. “They find that their skin is even better, because they’re not picking at it anymore to tweeze the hair out!” shares Mary. Contact her for a free consultation, even if you’re not sure whether electrolysis is right for you. Mary will arm you with information and put you in control. Absolute Perfection Electrolysis is located at 7810 Dodge Street, Suite 4. Reach Mary at 402-398-3300 or omahaelectrolysis.net. November 2021

Good Looks

The Mane Attraction Hair Trends for Life

By Loretta McCollum

Any time is a great time to wow everyone with a new hairstyle or a new color. Today’s styles have something for everyone, from bobs, bangs, and braids to pixies and ponytails. To choose a flattering look, consider your face shape, body type, age, and hair texture. Faces come in lots of shapes, including long, round, heartshaped, square, and oval. To determine your face shape, stand in front of a mirror, pull your hair back, and trace the outline of your face on the mirror with an eye pencil. If you have a long face, consider a short style with volume or curls to make the face appear wider than it is. A simple blow-out can also add width. To elongate round faces, a high ponytail or a below-chin cut with a deep side part can trick the eye into thinking that the face is narrower than it really is. Bangs and side volume help diminish the heart-shaped face’s characteristic prominent forehead, and side volume creates the illusion of a wider jawline. A square face can be softened with wispy bangs, choppy ends, and textured curls. An oval face allows for the most versatility. Almost any style will flatter this classic shape. Choose from long, short, layered, bangs or no bangs, a pixie, or an updo. It’s hard to go wrong. Once you’ve ascertained your face shape, don’t forget to consider your body type. The slim and straight lady should avoid a style that’s too big or too long. She wants a cut with

long bangs, layers, and angles that add body. A woman proud of her curves should choose a layered, medium-length cut with a side part and bangs, for a soft look that complements her full figure. A short-to-medium cut with layers and angles that add volume and height is an excellent choice for a petite figure. A tall, athletic build works with most cuts and styles. These ladies can experiment to see what flatters their hair texture and face shape. Whether or not we want to admit it, that fab “do” we totally rocked in our 20s most likely won’t look as good at age 40 and beyond. As we mature, the texture of our hair changes, becoming drier and more wiry, forcing us to adapt. This doesn’t mean, however, that women “of a certain age” can’t achieve a contemporary look. The old rules, like no long hair after age 40, no longer apply, and gray is most certainly okay. Flattering styles for mature women avoid harsh lines and colors, focusing instead on warm, natural tones; layers that soften the face; wispy, feathery textures; and soft curls. Less frequent shampooing, as well as periodic deep

conditioning treatments, help keep your locks looking younger. Select a cut and style that complements your hair’s texture and choose your styling tools and products accordingly. Thick, wavy hair delivers a multitude of style options but also demands proper product choices to keep those tresses tamed. Loose waves and layers create balance and add dimension while avoiding too much volume. Your stylist can thin your hair with thinning shears, eliminating extra weight. A longer or curly pixie cut allows for simplified styling. Avoid over-shampooing thick hair. It takes longer for natural oils to travel from the scalp to the ends of the hair, so wash your hair only once every few days and don’t use a volumizing conditioner. When blow-drying thick hair, let it air-dry for a while first, then use a diffuser and a round, boar bristle brush to help control frizz and add shine. A good detangling brush, deep conditioners, and hot oil treatments are essential suburbanbridalomaha.com for very coarse and kinky hair. Fine hair is typically limp, calling for a style that adds volume and dimension. A blunt cut adds weight and bulk Suburban Bridal.indd 1 around the perimeter, and an asymmetrical cut provides an illusion of depth. A layered bob or a long pixie are good style choices. Use a heat protectant and a volumizer when styling fine hair. Avoid gels and opt for a mousse instead. A good wax spray will hold your style in place. The latest color trends feature iridescent and neon hues, deeper reds, and blacker blacks. For a sunlit look, the floodlight process applies highlights directly on top of a tint without rinsing in between. For an ombre effect, the balayage technique paints highlighter into the hair in an upward, sweeping motion, for gorgeous results. Hairstyle professionals know what cuts and styles will work with your hair type. There’s no point in insisting on a cut that won’t flatter! Have an open conversation with your stylist to select the right color, cut, and style for your new look. Sources for this article included: purewow.com, hairfinder.com, and shape.com. Fabulous Built-In Storage Ideas Making the Most of Your Space

By Robyn V. Powell

Nothing makes a house feel more like a home than beautiful built-in cabinetry. Quality built-ins exude a sense of luxury and a custom feel while maximizing every available inch of a home’s floor plan. Luckily, built-in cabinetry is not an out-of-reach luxury but an affordable option with endless possibilities for customization. Whether you’re building new or planning a remodel, check out a few of the reasons that built-ins should be next on your home renovation to-do list. Adding built-ins to an existing home begins with finding under-utilized space. You’d be surprised at the amount of unused space within most homes. Take a look around and you’ll likely discover a nook or an open space in every room. Why not transform dead zones found under a staircase or beneath a window into functional storage space? For a beautiful, cohesive look, draw upon other architectural elements in the room, such as crown molding and wainscoting, to complement the design of built-ins. Because it is a permanent structure, a built-in should be a well-considered decision. Begin by outlining the purpose your built-in will serve. Maybe you’ve been thinking about a family room makeover featuring a built-in entertainment area with bookshelves. Maybe your household would make better use of a mudroom with seating and personal cubby storage for each family member. Once you’ve decided on the purpose and desired location of a built-in, it’s time to bring in the professionals. Certified

kitchen and bath companies or independent cabinetmakers are a great place to start. Have a knowledgeable specialist come to your home to measure your space and discuss the various options to personalize and best suit your needs. Whether you’re sharing space with a growing family or your grown family members are returning to the nest, one thing is for certain—space is always in short supply. According to most homeowners, there just never seems to be enough! Before you build an addition to your home or rent a storage unit, consider space-saving furniture. Murphy beds, sometimes called wall beds, attach to the wall and are lowered by hinges. When not in use, these ingenious beds easily fold away into the wall. When hidden, a Murphy bed doubles as an attractive piece of furniture and can be built to accent any style of decor, thereby transitioning a stylish office by day into a cozy bedroom by night. Another space-saving type of furniture is a platform storage bed. Equipped with pull-out drawers for sheets, towels,

Erin listened, assessed my concerns/desires and was knowledgeable and responsive. So it made great sense for her to assist us in our future housing prospect—a downtown condo. Again, she listened, did her homework, and presented the best-matched properties to tour. She kept at it—in her words, “it’s a process.” Eventually we found the condo of our dreams—and then she REALLY went to work to buy us two more years in our home. We had three rental companies tell us we were doing the impossible yet Erin put her networking skills together and found an ideal tenant, willing to pay—cash up front! We highly recommend her to help you find the perfect match!” — Mary

clothes, and shoes, platform beds offer more than a good night’s sleep—they have space for all your belongings plus the added feature of never having to vacuum under the bed again! If you’re downsizing, finding enough storage space in a smaller home can be a challenge. It doesn’t have to be inconvenient! Nothing puts your square footage to better use than a built-in. Moving into a home with a smaller kitchen or fewer closets doesn’t mean you have to get rid of things you’d rather keep. Choose space-saving features that provide maximum efficiency for organizing your wardrobe or cookware. An elegant and practical built-in complete with shoe cubbies, drawers, and a hanging rod for wrinkle-free presentation squeezes every inch out of a small closet. That skinny space between your fridge and wall is prime real estate for a vertical slide-out pantry to house canned goods or spices. Transform an island to serve as an organized command center by going with an open concept. From the front, it’s a typical kitchen island. The back side is open and equipped with shelving for everything from cookbooks to cookware. Who says the garage is just for cars and tools? Turn your garage into the ultimate storage center with a garage makeover that adds order to your life and frees up living space. Choose from hundreds of options, including shelves and built-in cabinets, to keep items at hand but out of the way. Overhead storage solutions get seasonal items off the floor while sleek wall-mounted racks keep sports and gardening equipment organized. If you are motivated to optimize your storage space but feel overwhelmed, hiring a professional organizer is a great idea. A professional organizer acts as a coach to get you on track and break your project down into bite-sized, manageable pieces. A professional can help you identify what you really want to keep and where to best store items. Investing in custom built-ins adds to the quality of your life and the value of your home. By teaming up with the right professionals, you can customize your space to suit your specific wishes and enjoy the built-ins of your dreams! Eating Disorders Recognition is Key to Recovery

By Leslie Byrne

Eating disorders are serious conditions that negatively affect a person’s physical health and mental health. The long-term effects can include bone and dental problems, heart issues, digestive problems, and even death. Eating disorders can certainly be treated, but they often include an element of denial that makes diagnosis challenging. Treatment can’t even begin, much less succeed, until the disorder is recognized. An estimated 30 million Americans have struggled with an eating disorder at some point over their lifetime. Of those 30 million, 20 million are women and 10 million are men. Although we most commonly associate eating disorders with young women, men can have eating disorders, as well. In fact, it is believed that men’s numbers are under-reported, possibly because they often present as overly focused on getting muscular as opposed to getting thin. There are several types of eating disorders, and knowing the difference between them is vital to recognizing them in others or yourself. A binge eating disorder is when someone regularly eats very large amounts of food in a short amount of time and is subsequently distressed about this eating. Many people with binge eating disorders are overweight or obese. Bulimia nervosa also involves binge eating. People with this disorder have episodes of binge eating followed by purging the food from their bodies. Purging comes in many forms, including vomiting, frequent use of laxatives or diuretics, fasting, or excessive exercise.

Someone with anorexia nervosa intentionally and significantly reduces their food intake. Their body weight drops to levels far below the normal weight for someone of their age, sex, or build. People with bulimia and anorexia are characterized by a fear of gaining weight. They desperately want to lose weight, regardless of how much weight they have already lost. They may see themselves as overweight even when they are malnourished or starved. Eating disorders can develop at any age, but they are most common in young adults. The average age of onset of a binge eating disorder is 21 years old; for bulimia or anorexia, it’s 18 years. The exact cause of eating disorders is unknown. Some genes bring an increased risk of developing an eating disorder. Many people with eating disorders have accompanying psychological or emotional issues such as low self-esteem, need for perfection, or impulsive behavior. We tell them the truth: Match.com. “Online dating is just as murky as finding a used car. Once you learn the lingo, it’s easier to spot the models with no warranty.” —Laurie Perry I first got married when I was 20, and I stayed married for 33 years before I became a widow. Four years later, I decided to take the plunge into online dating. My niece, Kristina, encouraged me. She had met her husband, Roshan, on Match.com, and I loved him! It was a recommendation I trusted. I knew absolutely nothing about men, and I thought online dating would be a good way to take a crash course on the opposite sex! The truth? It’s a lot of work. Over the course of my experience on Match.com, I met more than 50 men in person. Women always ask…what were the men like? My answer? I met three good men, but Manny was the one! Seven years after the day that we met, Manny and I got married in Kauai…on the beach…at sunset. Yes, it can work. “There are much easier things in life than finding a good man. Like nailing Jell-O to a tree, for instance.” —Anonymous

By Janet Van deWalle

That got me thinking…what makes a good man? I believe that a good man is someone who treats you with respect. He values his relationship with you, as an equal partner. A good man makes you happy. A good man wants you to shine and succeed, and he does everything in his power to help you. He tells you the truth, even if it’s something you don’t want to hear, because he wants to protect you. “…Man is never so manly as when he feels deeply, acts boldly, and expresses himself with frankness and with fervor.” —Benjamin Disraeli Being married to Manny has been the best experience of my life. We have been mutual partners in learning together. Because I knew Manny for seven years before we married, I really got to know what kind of man he is. I know in every ounce of my being that he truly is a good man and I am one lucky woman! “Appreciate a good man! If you have a good man, respect him, honor him, and cherish him. You’ll know he’s a good man because he’s already doing those things for you. Don’t take him for granted.” —Tony Gaskins If you are looking, ladies, take the plunge. It’s worth all the effort and energy in order to finally have the love of your life! Just make sure you follow Match.com's rules for safety.

The Power of Positivity Good for Body, Mind, and Soul! Every once in a while, going through boxes in storage, I come across a gem. Mom kept stuff for all of us, saying, “It’s not mine; it’s yours. It’s up to you to decide whether to keep, toss, or give it away.” The most recent box of “stuff Mom saved for me” held papers I wrote in high school and college. In those days, I wrote them in long-hand and Mom typed them on her Remington Portable. One was about the power of positive thinking and how positivity can be healing to the mind, body, and soul. Norman Vincent Peale wrote about a man with a debilitating and painful disease. While bedridden, the man watched old comedies starring the Three Stooges or the Marx Brothers. “This man laughed so hard he forgot about his pain,” Peale wrote. “The body and mind took over. He’s now nearly pain-free.” I learned a lesson in positivity when the director of the preschool where I taught arranged a staff in-service led by the teacher of a positive parenting class. Our first task was to “write four positive things about the most troublesome child you have.” That was hard…we’d spent a lot of time complaining about our “problem children.” After we shared our lists, she instructed, “Now, write four negative things about that child.” It was more difficult to switch from positive to negative than vice versa. We all commented on how much better being positive felt. The director noted how our altered

By Marge Shoemaker

attitudes changed the way we reacted to the children… and made our jobs easier. The biggest change was in stating things in a positive rather than negative manner, saying, “Do this” instead of “Don’t do that.” We also urged the kids to say, “I’ll try” instead of “I can’t.” What works for kids also works for adults…especially those who ruminate about the past or feel overwhelmed by the bad things they see in the media. I once asked Mom what we kids were like growing up. “I don’t remember any of you being bad,” she recalled. “I just remember good things.” When I asked if it was difficult to relocate so often for Dad’s job, she replied, “Not especially. I did whatever had to be done.” Both Mom and my mother-in-law usually saw the silver lining in a situation. One gloomy, damp day, my MIL complained about no sunshine, then stopped and said, “The farmers need the rain, so I guess it’s a good thing!” Whenever we talked about the past, both of these ladies concentrated on positive reminiscing: pleasant memories of good things and fun times. They didn’t ignore the negative; they just didn’t dwell on it. As they aged and faced declining health, they did it with good humor. Mom’s attitude: Don’t worry about what you can’t change; just change what you can. I’ve been blessed with their examples of positive thinking.

Healthy Living

Central Plains ENT Hearing Loss Solutions

By Linda Sutherland

When good hearing comes naturally, it’s easy to take it for granted. Hearing is, by far, the most social of our senses. We use it to maintain relationships with coworkers, family, and friends. When hearing begins to falter, whether from injury, disease, or aging, it affects our quality of life and can lead to negative health outcomes. That is where the caring team at Central Plains ENT comes in. They are equipped to diagnose and manage all manner of hearing disorders, helping us participate fully in our lives. An audiologist is a healthcare professional who identifies, assesses, and manages disorders of hearing, balance, and other neural systems. Audiologists can treat tinnitus and balance disorders such as vertigo and other maladies that originate in the inner ear. Krissa Downey, Au.D., CCC-A, is an audiologist at Central Plains ENT. She has made it her life’s work to help people to hear and interact fully with the world around them. Dr. Downey grew up in North Platte, Nebraska. She earned her master’s degree at the University of Nebras-

ka–Lincoln in 2002 and l-r: Krissa Downey, moved to Kansas City to begin her career Au.D, CCC-A; in audiology. She returned to Omaha in Michael Grace, BC, HIS; 2005, doing clinical work with both adult Trish Morrow, AU.D; Gary Moore, MD, FACS; and pediatric patients. In 2009, she earned Iris Moore, MD, FACS; her doctorate in audiology from the Arizona and Taylor Hepp, PA-C School of Health Sciences. Since 2014, Dr. Downey has been a part of the team at Central Plains ENT, where she simply loves what she does. She enjoys the flexibility of working in a private

practice and appreciates the many and varied opportunities it brings for her to diagnose and treat patients on a daily basis, improving their lives. For the past 10 years, Central Plains ENT and Audiology have been involved as mentors and teachers for audiology students at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. They are very dedicated to these future audiologists and sometimes have an audiology student with them during an office visit at Central Plains ENT. When I visited Dr. Downey’s office, I saw many thank-you notes from grateful patients and students. It’s easy to see that she is a caring practitioner and teacher, appreciated by everyone whose life she touches. Of course, any type of patient care brings challenges, and audiology is no exception. Finding solutions to the most challenging problems is what Dr. Downey finds particularly rewarding. “My biggest challenge is helping people with hearing issues when they think there is no hope for them,” Dr. Downey shares. “They think treatment is too expensive or too much trouble, or they do not realize how much their hearing issues are affecting the quality of their life. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing the happiness in someone’s eyes after I’ve been able to help them hear clearly.” At Central Plains ENT, Dr. Downey works with a wonderful team that is dedicated to the highest standards in medical care. These board-certified surgeons and physicians work individually with each patient to find the best solutions. In addition to hearing disorders and hearing technology, the team can also handle balance disorders and dizziness. They also test and treat patients for allergies, helping patients find

relief through techniques like allergen avoidance, medication, and allergy shots. ENT stands for ear, nose, and throat, and you’ll find specialists in all these areas at Central Plains ENT. They can address many problems of the nose, like loss of smell, nosebleeds, sinusitis, breathing problems, and nose injuries. They also tackle problems of the throat, such as tonsillitis, laryngitis, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, salivary gland problems, tonsil infections, adenoid disease, and vocal cord issues. Dr. Downey knows that many people are getting less out of life because they’re enduring hearing loss but have not sought treatment. She wants those people to know that there is hope for them, even when they think there is not. “There is a lot to demystify in the field of hearing,” she points out, “but if people take the first step, we can almost always fine tune their hearing for all frequencies. Through a series of tests, we can find the root cause of the hearing loss and pinpoint the best medical approach.” Central Plains ENT and Audiology takes great pleasure in helping people retain or recapture their quality of life and providing them relief from chronic health conditions. Their goal is to help patients keep their independence and remain viable participants in life. If you have been having trouble with your ears, nose, or throat, the dedicated professionals at Central Plains ENT can help! You can reach Central Plains ENT and Audiology by phone at 402-502-6970. Central Plains ENT is open weekdays at 8005 Farnam Drive, Suite 204. To learn more or make an appointment, visit centralplainsent.com.

Mr. Market Is on Sale—Again Latest Chapter in the War on Fees By George Morgan

Over the summer, there was a flurry of announcements from the financial services industry concerning the fees they charge for trading and related investment services. While none of these announcements was a game changer on its own, they do highlight the ongoing competitive forces at work in the industry. These are developments that every serious investor needs to be aware of to investigate how they might apply them to their personal investment program. Several years ago, when fees were approaching zero, many of the pundits expected the fee war to come to a screeching halt. However, it has taken almost five decades to reach this point, and the end is not in sight. It began in 1975, when the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) dropped their mandated commission schedule and allowed brokers to negotiate their own fees. The next battle in the fee war came when Jack Bogle formed the Vanguard Group and began offering index funds with a maintenance fee of 0.5 percent. This was as much as 5 percent lower than the fees of competing actively managed funds. The initial response was tepid, at best, but Americans today have placed more dollars in low-cost index funds than in their more expensive, actively managed cousins. Bogle’s innovation was swiftly followed by a number of startup brokerage firms offering investors the ability to trade stocks over the phone, thus bypassing the broker and providing the same essential service at significantly lower prices than the Wall Street firms were offering. Over time, these firms dramatically enhanced their technology, enabling them to further reduce prices. In response to the pressure on commissions, the media began to refer to this type of broker as a discount broker. Until recently, the zero commission program applied mainly to stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Then, this August, TD Ameritrade announced that they were expanding the plan to include trades of actively managed mutual funds. However, they excluded those mutual fund families who were unwilling to pay TD Ameritrade for record-keeping and other administrative services. Those in this category are mainly the proprietary funds of the Wall Street firms such as Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch. The bottom line of this move is that those investors who manage their own accounts and prefer mutual funds can now enjoy the same cost-efficient features previously reserved for others. Fidelity Investments recently announced plans to add an additional 9,000 employees in order to deal with the increased trading volume and other online investment assistance that have grown over the course of the last year and a half. Fidelity is not alone in the discount brokerage space, as Vanguard and Schwab have experienced similar increases. One of the results of Fidelity’s hiring spree is to reduce 42

November 2021

costs. This reduction will be passed on to the customers, adding to the competitive pressure toward lower fees. Drawn to the market’s rally, individual investors have changed the fortunes of the brokerage industry. The no-commission stock trades and low-fee investment funds now offered by many firms have brought in plenty of new clients. They also have thinned money managers’ profit margins and forced them to compete on price. Pricing pressure is also coming from an unexpected source: one of the exchanges. Members Exchange, a startup exchange backed by many Wall Street brokerage firms, recently filed a petition with regulators, asking permission to trade stocks in increments of one half of a cent. Stocks are bought and sold with one price to the buyer and a lower price to the seller. The difference between the two prices goes to the exchange as a fee for their service. Thirty years ago, the difference between the two prices was a quarter. In 1999, the price spread changed to pennies, and the fees paid to exchanges dropped dramatically. If approved, the Member Exchange proposal would bring trading costs down even further. As always, I want to conclude this discussion with the caveat that investing is not a one-size-fits-all situation. The dramatic growth of deposits and trading volumes at the discount firms are indications of the growing number of American investors who desire to manage their own investment portfolios. There are also those who want the aid and assistance of full-service brokers and, following full disclosure, should be allowed to access them. It follows that the full-service brokers who provide these services should be appropriately compensated for their time and expertise. Bottom line: The American financial services industry provides an expansive menu of investments for investors to choose from—and the members of the industry are in stiff competition for investors’ business. Beyond the Vine Bringing Joy to Home and Business

By Janette Calabro

The tagline at local flower shop Beyond the Vine is “we sell fun, happiness, and a great experience, all while inspiring the soul. ”Visit all 4,300 square feet of this beautiful store for an in-person glimpse of the florist’s indulgent, upscale flowers and home decor, and you’ll see why. If you can’t make a physical trip, browse color-popping photos on Pinterest, Instagram, and Facebook, or peruse the website at gobeyondthevine.com.You might just find yourself lingering there for much longer than you expected to. You can’t beat the human touch of a local boutique. “Our quality is much better than what you’ll find at box stores or large retail chains,” says Rose McCormick, the store’s owner. At a local florist, she continues, you get to come into the store to see and feel the actual flowers that you’re buying, “instead of ordering from a store where the picture looks good, but you have to send the arrangement back because it didn’t look as good as the picture.” Beyond the Vine offers fresh flowers and silk flowers for any occasion. You can buy green plants, blooming plants, tropical arrangements, prom corsages…and that’s just the half of it! The other half of the building is a home decor store. If you’re drawing a blank on how to decorate for the holidays this year, a trip to Beyond the Vine will surely inspire you. In fact, Rose says that she’s been gearing up for the holidays since June. “We do 75 to 100 different jobs between November 10th and December 10th,” says Rose. “When people are tired of decorating their tree or their house, we do it for them! Homes, businesses, churches, hotels— we run the gamut. After 37 years in the business, we just keep building.” Beyond the Vine is your interior and exterior holiday decorating specialist. Inside your home or business, the crew will set up trees and then light and decorate them. They can deck your mantels and stairways with beautiful garlands. Outdoors, consider fresh decorative pots or artificial arrangements with a festive vibe. Every job is customized, so you can dictate your preferences and let the pros get to work. They even have their own fleet of delivery vehicles, arriving as soon as a few hours after you make your order. “Decorating your house for Christmas is like getting a mani-pedi,” Rose points out. “You can do it yourself, but if you hire a professional to do the job, you can sit back, relax, and enjoy it! We can go as small as one little tree for an apartment and as big as the Champion’s Run Country Club or the Hilton

Hotel.” Gift certificates are popular, she notes. Decorating services can Rose McCormick, Owner be a great gift to give yourself…or whoever is tired of doing the decorating at your home. Rose is an advocate and mentor for women who want to start their own businesses. Rose started preparing for her dream job when she was 12 years old. She focused on her education and prepared piles of paperwork to get the loan she would need to start a shop. She opened up her first store fresh out of college. A firm believer in common sense in business, she listened to her clients, built relationships, and set out to lift her community with quality flowers and decor. Many studies have shown that flowers and green plants are mood lifters, Rose relates, livening up the mind, body, and soul. “Just having them in your office or home is so much better for your lungs and your health. They really do improve your mood and the environment that you live in. In Europe, having flowers daily is a way of life.” At Beyond the Vine, they get a steady stream of orders all year long for events like weddings, funerals, birthdays, anniversaries—you name it. Rose expects the usual jump in business around the end-of-year holidays, but she’s not intimidated by all the work. “I plan every day what I’m going to do, and I’m prepared for anything,” she asserts. “We are here to give recognition to the people who want to send flowers. We are here to bring joy to people’s lives, whatever the occasion is,” says Rose. “For me, it’s about serving others. If I can serve someone and bring them joy, it makes my day.” Speaking of making your day—Rose recommends stopping by the showroom “just to lose yourself in beautiful things! It’s a nice escape.” Who wouldn’t want to escape to beautiful things? Beyond the Vine is located at 13206 Grover Street, in Omaha. The Green Thumb

Dahlias Exquisite and Extraordinary

By Linda Sutherland

Whether you are a novice gardener or a seasoned one, you will love dahlias! Dahlias are a genus of tuberous plants that are members of the Asteraceae family. These beauties come from small tubers you plant in the spring. They bloom from mid-summer to autumn and will not disappoint. Dahlias can be any color of the rainbow, and the flowers on these gems can range from small pompoms to gigantic, 15-inch“dinner plate” blooms. They often grow up to four or five feet tall. These performers are considered a tender perennial in the colder regions of North America. Many gardeners choose to treat dahlias as annuals, but some hardy northern folks dig the tubers up and store them for winter. According to experts, dahlias are only winter hardy in USDA Planting Zones 8 to 11. However, as Mother Nature would have it, my dahlias have been reblooming every spring for three years now—and I live in Zone 5. These blooms brighten up a garden like almost nothing else. Their delicate petals are spectacular in an arrangement. Sometimes, when I look at the dahlias in my garden, I have to remind myself that they are real flowers. Their petals are flawless, seemingly devoid of imperfections, and I have to study them for a moment to decide again that they are, in fact, real. I have not always been so enamored with dahlias. One

year, my husband insisted on planting them. Actually, I was quite irritated with him when I discovered that he had planted some tubers where I was planning to grow something else entirely. As luck would have it, they forged ahead through the earth and, when they made their mid-summer appearance, you could have knocked me over with a petal. “Stunning” and “dramatic” are two of the words that came directly to mind. The colors are so vibrant and vivid that they look like works of art. I am not kidding! Some of the species look like an artist outlined each individual petal in a contrasting color. They are truly works of art. You’re probably convinced by now that dahlias belong in your garden, so let’s talk about the when and the where of planting these tuberous wonders. First note: Don’t be in too big of a hurry to plant these delightful dahlia tubers. Dahlias

will struggle in cold soil. Wait until the ground temperature reaches at least 60 degrees and all remnants of frost are behind you. (You may even wish to start them indoors in small containers first.) Dahlias love and need full sun. They require six to eight hours of sun every day and they will do well in a rich, well-drained soil. If you find that you have a more claylike soil, you will need to prepare the soil with some sand and peat moss. Choose tubers that look healthy and are not wrinkled in appearance. They should feel like they have retained some moisture—no driedout raisins here! You should space the tubers about nine to 12 inches apart. Dig your hole six to eight inches deep, set the tubers in the hole, and cover with soil. They do not need mulching. Now sit back and watch the magic happen. Dahlias should start blooming about eight weeks after planting. You will love them! The bees love them, too. Dahlias come in many gorgeous varieties, and I want to highlight a few of the most unusual. Let’s start with the most luxurious: Platinum Blonde. This is a very showy flower, with a yellow puff-ball center and white surrounding petals. It would be gorgeous in a bouquet or arrangement. A variety called Gitts Crazy is a very interesting and unusual dahlia. It is a taller variety and is a very strong and sturdy plant. The color is goldish bronze, with brush strokes of rose and purple on the back of each petal. Some people think it looks like a sunset. The Mikayla Miranda has gorgeous, delicate lavender and white blooms that are unstoppable. Cooper Blaine is a brightly hued red and orange beauty that can get to four feet tall. There are so many varieties and colors and sizes and textures! The dahlia originally comes from South America. It is believed that Aztecs used parts of the dahlia for food and medicine. Through the 1800s and 1900s, thousands of new forms were developed; in the past century, nearly 50,000 varieties have been listed. The dahlia is the national flower of Mexico, and today’s dahlia has more variation in form, color, and size than almost any other flower grown. You need these beauties in your life! Seasons of Life

Assisted Living Security, Freedom, Privacy

By Linda Barnes

Seniors today have abundant options for living arrangements in retirement. An assisted living community is an exceptional choice for retirees who no longer wish to maintain a house or require a bit of help with some of their daily activities. Assisted living provides a safe environment with services to meet health and social needs. An assisted living facility may stand alone or be part of a community that offers different levels of care, including independent living, memory care, or skilled nursing. Those who desire a high degree of independence but need some assistance with such things as bathing, dressing, managing meds, or toileting are great candidates for assisted living. Each facility may have slightly different requirements. For example, some facilities may not be able to assist with liquified food, feeding tubes, or IVs. Many only provide one-person transfers (that is, residents must be mobile enough that only one staff member is required to move them). Some allow two-person transfers, especially if it is temporary, like after surgery. Good food is always a high priority. At assisted living communities, meals are likely included in the monthly charge. Choices may be offered at mealtime, with an eye toward healthful selections. Residents are encouraged to take their meals in the dining room but may have meals brought to their apartment, if preferred. When touring a facility, ask for a current menu. Activities are an important component of senior living

46 1 Elder Law.indd

November 2021

arrangements. Games such as cards, bingo, or checkers are popular, as are movies and exercise classes. Speakers, musical performances, church services, and hobby opportunities are typically offered. Some offer a pub or saloon with regularly scheduled happy hours. Typically, a van is available for trips to appointments, shopping, or scheduled outings. Residents may have physical therapists or other health professionals come in, if needed. A fitness center may have instructors on duty to help with various machines and to assist with exercise programs. Individual apartments are designed with seniors in mind, so safety features abound. Mini kitchens might contain a microwave, sink, and fridge. Bathrooms will likely have convenient grab bars, walk-in showers, and raised commodes. A choice of layouts might include private studios, suites, or one-bedroom units. Roomy closets are a plus. Weekly housekeeping, linens, and utilities are generally included. A facility in my community allows pets, including dogs, in their independent living area but only cats or birds in the assisted living units. Other facilities may differ regarding pets.

Wellness is a top consideration. The best facilities have a nurse on duty 24/7. Emergency call systems help ensure safety, and meds are managed by trained personnel. A facility I’ve visited has a wonderful “Main Street” within the building. Their small shops include a hair salon, bank, gift shop, and ice cream parlor. Computer center and library are a plus. Look for larger spaces where residents can entertain family and friends. Attractive, accessible outdoor spaces contribute to a sense of well-being. Many cities have services that help seniors find the best fit for their wants and needs, often at no charge. They can simplify the process. They consider each senior’s needs and financial resources to help ensure a well-informed decision. Exploring options on your own will require some diligence. It is important to visit facilities in person. Look for cleanliness, cheerful staff, and happy residents. Many facilities will give a tour by appointment and answer any questions or concerns. Each state has its own requirements for licensing or accreditation, and it’s important to become familiar with those. The ratio of staff to residents is key, as is the training required for various staff positions. A community that includes both independent and assisted living will often give priority to current residents who need to transition to a higher level of care. Facilities that include memory care or skilled nursing wings offer smoother transitions to higher levels of care than moving to a different facility. Even with the most attractive and well-staffed senior community, some seniors will find it difficult to move away from home. Establish good communication with your loved one and list some reasons why a move might be good. Talk about the positive aspects without interjecting your opinion. Is there a friend or relative who could join the conversation with positive encouragement? Does your loved one know anyone who is already living in the facility you’re considering? Assisted living is a great option for seniors or younger people after surgery or with disabilities who need some support with daily activities. The focus is on meeting critical needs for health, safety, social interaction, and spiritual support, while providing as much independence and privacy as possible. Peak Performance

Have You Outgrown Your Insurance? Review Your Coverage

By Maria Harding

The years tend to pass quickly. While it is fairly easy to assess if our children’s clothes still fit or whether our roof is leaking, knowing if we have adequate insurance coverage takes a more concerted effort and the advice of experts. State laws mandate that drivers have minimum liability coverage to protect others in case of an accident. Banks and mortgage lenders require that borrowers have homeowners’ insurance that at least covers the lending company’s portion of the investment. However, these bare-minimum mandates are rarely sufficient to protect you from financial disaster, and wise investments like life insurance or an umbrella policy aren’t even required! Life insurance helps support your spouse and dependents if your earnings disappear when you pass away. Term life insurance pays only if your death occurs during the term of the contract, usually from 1 to 30 years. Whole Life insurance provides money to your beneficiaries no matter what your age of passing. Over the years, your needs may change as you have more children, incur more debt, or pay off loans. An insurance professional can explain Term and Whole Life options in detail and evaluate variables like how long your family would require assistance, whether a family member has special needs, your debt-to-savings ratio, and so on.

This has been a year of record rainfall in many parts of the country. Climate change has precipitated extreme weather conditions that cause an overflow of inland waters and flooding in nearby communities. Fracking activity and two sizeable fault zones in the Midwest make this area surprisingly vulnerable to earthquakes. Is your home covered in case of flood or earthquake damage? You may think so, but it’s best to know for sure. As a renter, you aren’t responsible for the structure, but consider all of your possessions inside. Could you truly afford to replace every furniture item and stitch of clothing in the event of a loss? Your agent can help determine if special items like art, musical instruments, and jewelry need special riders. Condo owners may have some coverage through their homeowners’ association (HOA), but those policies often have omissions that leave residents vulnerable. Many HOA policies are meant to safeguard common areas, but homeowners might need additional coverage, sometimes called “Gap” or “HO-6” policies, to protect their possessions. Some renters’ and HO-6

policies also cover loss of use (if you lose access to the building and need temporary lodgings). Whether you buy or rent, it may be tempting to choose the policy with the smallest monthly premium. Before you do so, carefully evaluate whether you could comfortably pay the deductible in the event of a loss. Whether you use your home exclusively for personal use or you also use your dwelling for business, it is your responsibility to insure against injury and accidents that may occur on your property. Be very specific with your agent about all the ways you use your home to make sure that a claim would never be denied. Umbrella policies can save you from financial disaster, but many policyholders don’t even know about this kind of coverage! If you or your family members were ever deemed at fault for a devastating injury or loss and were sued, an umbrella policy covers what may be in excess of your regular auto, watercraft, or homeowners’ policy. Umbrella policies also go beyond the scope of what is covered under those kinds of policies, supporting you in case you face charges of libel, slander, or invasion of privacy. This extra level of protection is quite affordable and certainly worth discussing with your insurance agent. When you purchase insurance, you are essentially entrusting your family’s security to a company. It is therefore important that you find that company to be reliable, fair, and clear in its communication. Going directly to a single-company agent gives you the benefit of a specialist who knows the subtleties within the different policies and has the experience of witnessing how effectively the policies are paid out in claims. If you choose to work with an independent insurance agent, you benefit from that agent’s access to policies from several different carriers. They can help you review which policies are best for you and your needs. Each has its advantages. What is important is that you meet with your insurance specialist regularly to review your needs. These pros are trained to help you find holes in your coverage that you may not have considered, at a cost that you and your family can afford. As you build a relationship, your agent will take the time to get to know you and make sure your insurance coverage evolves with you through the years. Gift Ideas for Vehicle Lovers Get Your Shopping Started!

By Linda Sutherland

Yes, it is that time of year again—time to start making a list and checking it twice. Many of us have at least one car enthusiast on our list. If cars are your passion, too, you probably find this person great fun to shop for. If cars aren’t really your thing, you might struggle to find a gift that suits your particular car lover. Well, start your engines, because we’ve got the gifts right here—things your aficionado might not even know they want yet. They’ll know soon enough, and they’ll have you to thank! Let’s start with some cool new gadgets for the car. First up is the Innova CarScan Advisor 5210 Code Reader Tool. This unique device provides easy-to-read information on a vehicle in distress. It even indicates the level of urgency you should feel about getting your vehicle repaired! It offers live data, battery tests, and even an emission test scan tool. This device will really empower home mechanics with professional functionality, and any car enthusiast will love the ease of operation. If your recipient loves having Alexa at home, consider an Echo Auto so they can bring their virtual assistant on the road! Echo Auto connects to the Alexa smartphone app and car speakers. This dandy device has eight microphones and is designed to be heard over music and general road noise. Before buying, check on Amazon to see if your recipient’s car is compatible with the app. Car buffs who think of their cars as family members may want to monitor their vehicle’s location. The Zeerkeer GPS tracker gives real-time updates on the location of a vehicle with a positioning accuracy as close as five meters. It’s compatible with both Android and iOS and gives the owner complete peace of mind. This waterproof, dustproof, and shockproof device is magnetic, so you simply attach it to any iron surface on the vehicle—no installation is required. Owners who want to monitor how fast their vehicle is being driven by other parties (parents of teen drivers, perhaps?) will appreciate the over-speed alarm function, triggered whenever the tracked vehicle goes faster than 70 mph. Let’s explore some less expensive but equally thoughtful gadgets for drivers with different needs. A Tile Mate keychain is a great solution for keeping track of keys. It attaches to your key ring, syncs to your smartphone via Bluetooth, and can be tracked down using GPS on the Tile App. A map shows where that specific Tile Mate is so you can locate it. These devices even work in wallets! Another device that recently caught my eye is the Avid Power Cordless Air Compressor. Its cordless design makes inflating tires easier than you 52

November 2021

ever imagined. It has a convenient auto-off feature, so you never have to worry about over-inflating. Let’s move on to apparel that can crank up the driving experience a few notches. Everyone needs a good pair of driving gloves in the fall and winter to best maintain a solid grip on the steering wheel. For your enthusiast, a pair of genuine leather, full-finger gloves will feel luxurious. To pair nicely with those gloves, how about driving loafers? That’s right, I’m talking about shoes. The Wolf & Shepherd Gunner Drivers are handcrafted with waterproof suede and are extremely comfortable. It’s almost like wearing slippers…but nicer. It’s the perfect shoe for cruising. Of course, anyone who cares about their car wants it to be clean, inside and out. A gift certificate to an auto detailer is a wonderful gift for drivers—especially if they would normally consider professional detailing to be an extravagance. You might also consider a membership to a high-end car wash. For those who love taking care of their vehicles at home, a hand vacuum like the Black & Decker Lithium Cordless is a great choice. It fully charges in six hours and comes with a flip-up brush head for dusting and cleaning upholstery. If you’re the type who enjoys creating gift baskets, a whole basket (or bucket?) of car cleaning implements will be as much fun to give as it is to receive. You know what car lovers enjoy, besides maintaining and driving their cars? Looking at beautiful photos of beautiful cars. Some of the loveliest coffee table books I have ever seen featured different models of cars. Whether you choose a book about the car they have or about the car they have their eye on, your car buff is sure to get a kick out of a book on their favorite subject. The season of holiday gift-giving is upon us. Let’s get started on some great shopping! Sources for this article included: familyhandyman.com, interestingengineering.com, and caranddriver.com

Enterprising Ideas

Roeder Mortuaries Proud to Serve Your Family

By Maria Harding

Brian Roeder, the president and owner of Roeder Mortuaries, describes himself as outgoing and detail-oriented.“I just tighten my belt and get ready for anything,”he says. He believes these strengths were fostered during his service in the United States Navy. This fall, between the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and Veterans Day on November 11, Brian is particularly mindful of his experience in the military and of the many ways those skills continue to shape his life and career. Brian recently took over leadership at Roeder Mortuaries from his father, and he is not the first in his family to do so. In fact, the legacy extends back four generations, passing knowledge and experience from fathers to sons. Those on his staff at the three Omaha-area locations are trusted colleagues whose dedication reflects what it means to be a business that is truly family-owned. “Our newer team members have been here for well over 10 years,” Brian says. “When you’re part of a family-owned business, you’re valued. You have to wear more hats, but you’re not dealing with corporate structure. He draws a parallel with his Navy experience. “It’s not an easy industry to be in,” he says of both professions. “Like in the military, you have a camaraderie. You tend to bond really quickly.” Since he took over leadership of Roeder Mortuaries in 2019, Brian’s adaptability has been put to the test. During the pandemic, the company quickly ramped up their live streaming. “We used to do it a couple times a year, for a military member who was overseas. Now, it’s almost every service,” he marvels. “I had the forethought to order a couple of cameras right away. It was a good thing I did. I went back to order a third one, and they were out!” The whole system is now extremely mobile; equipment can be taken to churches or even to graveside services. Over the years, Brian has seen other changes in the way families choose to honor loved ones. Information that Brian gathered at a recent seminar for the National Funeral Directors Association confirms the growing trend to offer “green” burial, of which cremation is a part. “Green options have been steadily growing on the coasts and are making their way to the Midwest,” Brian asserts. “When I joined the industry, cremation was at about 25 percent here in Nebraska. Now, we’re at 50–60 percent.” Families might schedule memorial services several months after a loved one passes. This option may allow more relatives to join together in support, but Brian offers sage advice that they might not have considered. “It’s not wrong, but is the family okay with grieving twice?” he posits. Many families put off making pre-need funeral plans because they fear that the conversation will be awkward.

That may be true, Brian concedes, but consider how helpful it will Brian Roeder, be to have it squared away. “A lot of the President-Owner awkwardness comes from the kids,” says Brian. “Mom and Dad are the ones who know they need to get this done. For them, it’s about how they can best serve their kids.” When families take the time to make preparations together, they find that they are able to be with each other more fully at the time of their loved one’s passing and grieve without distraction. During pre-need planning, Brian leads conversations that can actually promote closeness within the family, things that they might not talk about on a regular basis. For some individuals, sharing memories of life experiences may feel self-indulgent or even traumatic. The framework of pre-need planning encourages families to start sharing. From that, Brian says, other conversations can build. At any time of year, Roeder Mortuaries offers military discounts. Brian is familiar with military protocol and can explain options for paying tribute that the family may not have considered. Because he is a veteran, Brian admits, “that can be a little more emotional for me. It hits close to home.” “Every family is unique, and that’s what makes my job so interesting,” Brian says sincerely. Though he has been connected to the family business for his entire life, it has never become rote or clinical. His natural sense of empathy helps him connect with families and serve as a stabilizing presence. Come start the conversation with Brian at Roeder Mortuaries. It’s an opportunity to grow closer as a family and will give the gift of assurance when the need arises. “We all like to think that there’s always a tomorrow,” says Brian. He encourages us to embrace today. Roeder Mortuaries serves the Omaha area from three locations: Ames Avenue Chapel (402-453-5600), 108th Street Chapel (402-496-9000), and Gretna Chapel (402332-0090). Fashion for Fido Dressing Your Dog

By Jackie Byers

January 14th is National Dress Up Your Dog Day, but you don’t need to wait till 2022 to start building a wardrobe for your favorite furry friend. It’s best to start with sensible protective gear before branching out into fashion that’s just for fun. It’s also a good idea to talk to your veterinarian about dressing your dog. A vet can advise you about how to get your dog accustomed to clothing in small steps over time. Taking a daily walk with a dog lowers your blood pressure and increases the bond between you and the dog. These walks are important for your pet’s health, too. In most climates, harsh weather can adversely impact those walks. You probably protect yourself with different kinds of outdoor gear. Great minds have created some canine solutions, too. The first thing to consider is a set of dog boots. The sets of four come in a wide range of sizes, and they will serve your dog well all year. In winter, they prevent ice from collecting around the dog’s paw pads. In

summer, they protect those same tender paw pads from scorching sidewalks. Keep in mind that your dog may require some time to get accustomed to them. When rains come, you break out your umbrella, but a single umbrella is likely not enough to keep both you and your pooch dry. Now available is a dog harness that comes complete with the dog’s very own umbrella. You can also

past, present, and future. You don’t have to go far to find someone with a family member in the military or one who has served themselves. We appreciate the sacrifices they have made and continue to make for our great country.

get a separate dog umbrella—it looks like an umbrella that has blown inside out, but Fido gets to walk under it, clipped to it by his leash. Canine raincoats are readily available (and undeniably adorable), but beware of coats with hoods. Head coverings of any kind are a dangerous idea for a dog. Anything that even partially blocks hearing or sight is likely to frighten your dog, which can lead to unpredictable or even dangerous behavior. Dog sweaters offer weather protection in chilly climates, especially for short-haired dogs…and they are really cute. You can choose from cable knits, argyle patterns, bright colors— the selection is basically as large as it is for human sweaters. Of course, if you like to knit, you can create whatever design you desire for your dog. Tee shirts that strap on under the belly can be an easy beginning step into dog fashion, since they’re easy to get on and off. Be careful to avoid items that might interfere with a dog doing its outdoor business. Dog fashion is a popular trend that is growing every year. It is somewhat self-sustaining, since most dogs love the kind attention of people, and what gets more attention than an adorable dog in an adorable sweater? Some clothing designers are creating lines of attire for dogs. Valentino, Susan Lanci, and Ultra Paws are a few. If you and your pet are into high fashion, fancy dresses and puppy tuxedos are available. Again, be sure whatever you try does not cover your dog’s ears or eyes. With the right wardrobe, your dog can be a star in any setting. Whether you’re at a cocktail party, a birthday gathering, or an outdoor wedding, a

tastefully and delightfully attired dog is sure to bring lots of oohs and ahhs. Any holiday on which humans tend to dress a certain way can also be a dress-up holiday for dogs, including New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day, and St. Patrick’s Day. Of course, Halloween is the crown jewel of costuming. From a simple pirate scarf to an eight-legged spider get-up, there are endless costume choices for dogs to get in on the spooky fun. Many pet owners consider the Fourth of July to be a challenging holiday for dogs, who have sharp hearing and are often frightened by the sounds of fireworks. For dogs who need comfort from anxiety that is brought on by fireworks, thunderstorms, separation from owners, or visits to the vet, consider a ThunderShirt. This comforting wrap helps frightened dogs relax. ThunderShirts are also available for cats who get anxious. Some cat owners dress their cats for fashion, but let’s be honest—this has a lower success rate than dressing dogs. Don’t forget grooming! Fashion is not just about what you wear. Talk to your groomer about what would look good on your dog, keeping in mind the time you want to dedicate to daily upkeep and how often grooming appointments will need to be. If your dog digs it, dressing up can be fun! It can promote safety and comfort in times of stress and severe weather. Talk to your vet about how to introduce your dog to the idea of clothing. Specializing in Positive Reinforcement Training Positive reinforcement training uses a reward (treats, praise, toys, anything the dog finds rewarding) for desired behaviors. Because the reward makes them more likely to repeat the behavior, positive reinforcement is one of your most powerful tools for shaping or changing your dog’s behavior. At Bonafide Dog Academy we strive to meet our client’s needs and expectations through positive reward based training methods.

In-Home Water Systems Optimize Your Water and Your Health

By Anne Yankus

We all know that having a ready source of clean, plentiful water is vital to maintaining good health. Can you guarantee that the water coming from your tap is really clean and healthy? In the past, folks just had to take what they could get. Fortunately, we live in a technological age when you can install water and filtration systems to ensure your home tap water is the best it can be. A water system can remove harmful contaminants such as lead, arsenic, nitrates, pesticides, radium, radon, and bacteria and viruses. Reducing the number of minerals and contaminants in your water isn’t just beneficial for the water you drink, either. Having a water filtration system can also help soothe sensitive skin by reducing the number of irritants and chemicals in your washing water. Having regularly filtered water can help you keep clothes and dishes cleaner by reducing minerals in the water, making each ounce of soap and detergent you use more effective. Water systems aren’t a one-size-fits-all solution. There are several different types of water systems on the market, and each one is slightly different. Some of the most popular models are reverse osmosis (RO), conventional water filtration, water softeners, Kangen water, and hydroponics. Reverse osmosis water systems are some of the most comprehensive filtration systems currently on the market. Often working in conjunction with conventional sediment

and carbon filtration systems to remove larger particles and organic compounds, RO uses a semi-permeable membrane to filter out 98 percent of total dissolved solids from your water. Some volumes of salt water put through an RO system can even be converted to fresh water. In fact, the only contaminants an RO system can’t remove are the viruses and bacteria that can only be removed through a municipal treatment plant or UV disinfection. Conventional water filtration systems are basically the first few steps of a reverse osmosis system without the final semi-permeable membrane filter. They’re most like a largescale version of refrigerator or pitcher filters and usually function using sediment filters, carbon filters, or both. Simple water filtration is great for getting dirt, dust, rust, organic compounds, chlorine, and the like out of your water. Water softeners are great for anyone living in a part of the country that has naturally “hard” water (meaning that it has a lot of dissolved minerals in it). If your taps and shower

There are two types of water softening systems available: those that remove the minerals from your tap water using salt and those that use less abrasive, salt-free alternatives. A huge asset to gardeners living in crowded cities, apartments, or homes with small yards, hydroponics is a way to grow plants without using soil. Hydroponic systems are designed to tailor the supply water and nutrients and control the temperature and pH balance to suit a particular plant’s needs. There are six main types of hydroponic systems: deep water culture systems, wick systems, nutrient film technique systems, ebb and flow systems, drip systems, and aeroponics. When it’s time to shop for a water system, you’ll want to identify what water issues you have in your home, how much water you need to have filtered, and which type of system will best address your issues. Make sure the type of filtration you are buying removes all contaminants you’re concerned about and check that the filter is NSF-certified. Don’t assume that one system will fix all problems, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. You deserve the best water and filtration for your home. Sunridge Village It’s Where the Guys Are

By Marge Shoemaker

There are many points in life when we have to make a decision about what to do next. As we age, that“what”often entails whether we leave our family home and go live somewhere else. The subject may arise because our kids think caring for a house and the accompanying property is too much for us. In other cases, we may come to the decision that we should move because of health changes and challenges. Sometimes, the damaging results of wind storms, torrential rains, freezing temperatures, and all the other hardships nature throws at us, make us feel sick and tired of dealing with home ownership. Whatever the reason (or reasons) we decide to relocate, the next decision is where to go. How do we find the right home for us? Michale Kavan, the marketing director at Sunridge Village 55+ Retirement Community, could talk about this subject all day. Instead, she arranged an opportunity for me to meet with four of Sunridge’s gentleman residents. “We always seem to get the women’s point of view,” she comments. “I think it’s time we hear from the men who live here!” Gene is already there when I walk into the room. “Sorry I’m early,” he comments. “I wanted to be sure and get the best seat.” Shortly following my arrival, Walter comes in. “I thought I was going to be late,” he says. “The bus just got back from our excursion to Greenwood. We had lunch at a barbecue place and visited a candy factory.” Dennis is the next to arrive. He is just settling in when Vern appears at the door. Gene and his wife have lived at Sunridge for one year. Gene was a history teacher, and he’s used to investigating things. “I think my wife and I visited every community in town,” he recalls. “We talked to residents when we could and asked a lot of questions. Sunridge stood out as a nice place to call home…plus, my wife really liked the kitchens.” Walter spent some time in rehab after he broke his leg last year. “When I was ready to go home, my daughter came up from Arizona. We talked and decided I’d need more help with the house,” he says. “She looked around for places. We came out here and knew right away that Sunridge was it!” Dennis has been at Sunridge since 2016. “I’d just had a knee replaced and suffered a stroke. I loved working on projects around the house, but I knew I shouldn’t be living alone…there were too many things I couldn’t do anymore. I contacted an agency that helps people find placement. I told them I wanted to stay west and needed a place with a walk-in shower. Sunridge was the first place we looked at, and I knew it was the one.” 62

Vern, on the other hand, looked for three years before he found Sunridge. “So many places are run by corporations that seem so big and Residents-Vern Langel (standing), impersonal. It seems the staff Walter Kunold (left), and Dennis Musgrove (right) changes too often,” he points out. “Here, the staff has stability. Sunridge was just the right size and being family-owned was a definite plus!” That family is the Anzalone family, headed up by Richard Anzalone. “You know, the community was started because of his grandmother. It’s no wonder they respect the residents so much! They really care about the residents here…you can tell we’re more than just an income source. If something needs to be done, you know it will be taken care of right away. Whether it’s food, activities, or personal requests, they’re there.” These men have so much to praise about Sunridge! They love the relaxing courtyard (complete with putting green), the convenient underground parking, and the well-balanced and delicious meals. The wide variety of activities offered is also an asset. It’s more than just bingo at Sunridge! Thursday night poker is a favorite, and everyone is hoping the annual Casino Night activities can get back on the schedule this year. Sunridge held a classic car show, and special events like Hollywood Night and tailgating are always popular. The monthly Men’s Luncheon is a great time, as are various excursions. The gentlemen of Sunridge want this message to get out: Why sit around complaining that there’s nothing to do? Why wait until the decision to go someplace is made for you? Make relocation your choice. Come join us now! Sunridge Village 55+ Retirement Community is located at 13410 Blondo Street, in Omaha. For more information or to arrange a visit, call 402-496-0116. Positive Perspective

Self-Reflection Go to the Library

By Janet Van deWalle

I admit it. I used to be one of those people who rarely looked back to reflect on my day, my week, my month…my life. I remember thinking: It’s over and done with. What is the point? “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” —George Santayana Then I met my husband, Manny, and he and I began to talk. Manny is a thinker. A deep thinker. He is constantly reflecting, growing, and learning from his past. I was intrigued! Soon, I found myself reflecting. How did my day go? What went right? What was my high? What was my low? What could I have done differently? Better? What did I learn? “Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death.” —Albert Einstein Before I knew what happened, I realized that reflection had become a habit that helped me to become better at my business. Great! I liked this. Then Manny and I began to share our pasts with one another. We had long conversations about our parents, our kids, our siblings, and our former spouses. We reflected on the pluses and the minuses. We discussed what we did right and what we would do differently, knowing what we know now. It was…and has become…a great learning tool in my life.

“Our past is simply a library of memories to learn from.” —Manny Chavez Learning from my past…going into that library…has helped me more than I ever thought was possible. I think the biggest benefit is that it has helped me change, learn, and grow. Think about it: We go through our lives, live day by day. Some days are good, some not so good. If we don’t stop and reflect, we will keep doing the same thing over and over. Like the movie Groundhog Day! “Don’t get so stuck in your ways that you can’t change.” —Sam Walton That was me. I didn’t want to change…in fact, I frequently would tell whoever would listen that I hated change. I would tell others that I liked myself “just the way I was!” No wonder—I had been stuck so long that I didn’t know about the wonderful experiences I was missing!

“We are products of our past, but we do not have to be prisoners of it.” —Rick Warren Reflecting on my life is something that has taught me so much about myself, other people, and even the society we live in. I reflect after meetings. I reflect after social events. Every day, I go to the “library” and see how I have changed or how I can change. It’s exciting. I love it! Give it a try!
