Women of the Future: 50 Rising Stars in ESG, celebrates the talented female trailblazers and role models aged 35 and under from around the world who are at the forefront of ESG. Our campaign showcases 50 brilliant leaders working across different aspects of ESG who have made a lasting and positive impact on their organisations, environment and wider society. We share their stories, inspiring other women to be a force for good, and shed light on the positive examples of innovation, creativity and talent.
ESG is a wide-ranging and fast-moving field, which stands for Environmental, Social and Governance. It provides a framework for assessing how a company is performing against its commitments to shape a better world. This campaign will help to demystify ESG, translate it to a wider audience and celebrate the women who are driving progress. Within each theme, we will focus on key global issues that have been exacerbated by the pandemic and that need to be addressed urgently.
WHAT IS ESG IN THE EYES OF THE WOMEN OF THE FUTURE PROGRAMME?

The Women of the Future Programme is a movement focused on collaboration and kindness in the workplace, galvanising a community of women to work together as a new generation of talent across multiple sectors and industries.
To provide a platform for the progression of women across diverse sectors and countries. To enable future leaders to identify opportunities, build careeradvancing networks, be inspired and gain cutting-edge insights.
“ Through the programme, I obtained a great mentor and great advice. She also introduced me to other senior people within my industry.
“ A fantastic programme that has supported me and that I plan to keep supporting for many years to come.
“
I have LOVED being part of this network. For me, the most rewarding thing has been meeting accomplished and inspiring women outside my field of work.
We are delighted to announce the inaugural 50 Rising Stars in ESG list, in partnership with Tesco.
There are so many brilliant women working across the world in ESG, all determined to make a real and tangible difference. This 50 Rising Stars in ESG list acknowledges the innovative and tireless work of these phenomenal leaders, who are leading the way globally in Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG). From women working to protect human rights and combat gender-based violence to innovators seeking ways to eliminate plastic waste or drive key reforms in education, energy and infrastructure, this list celebrates the courage and commitment of female leaders who are taking action and changing the world.
Our hope is that by honouring these 50 trailblazers in ESG, the Women of the Future Programme can help build a community that collaborates across borders and springboards talent. We want to highlight the important work of these determined leaders, all of whom are committed to transformative change that will leave a legacy for future generations. We want to amplify their voices and help grow their impact, whilst also kickstarting important conversations across the world and industries.
It is an honour to introduce our 50 Rising Stars in ESG, in partnership with Tesco. A huge congratulations to you all.
We’re creating an inclusive workplace that celebrates the cultures, personalities and preferences of all our colleagues. It’s a place where everyone is treated fairly and with respect.
Embracing ESG thinking is essential for the future of our planet, and we celebrate the women who help drive positive actions and change. At Tesco, much of the important work we’re doing on ESG is being led by women across our business, in roles that are central to the way we operate.
We have a responsibility to address and rebalance ESG issues affecting our industry, and keep them at the forefront of both our agenda and the stakeholders we work with. We want to lead the way by taking action in our own supply chain and across the wider industry, and our commitments to this include working to halve the environmental impact of the average UK shopping basket, and committing to net zero emissions across the Tesco Group by 2035 and our entire value chain by 2050. Our customers know that whatever their budget, they can shop great quality, sustainable and responsibly-sourced products at Tesco.

Melissa has worked across private and non-profit sectors for 10 years, driving social impact and innovation, and championing financial inclusion and women’s economic empowerment. She leads the Financial Inclusion and Resilience vertical at Ownership Works, an NPO that helps companies and investors implement broad-based ownership programmes that allow employees to share in the wealth that they create. Melissa believes that young people, especially in growing economies, are the greatest resource we have to drive positive change.
I have no doubt that Melissa is a future trailblazer in the ESG space. Her ability to connect the pieces that need to come together to get the ‘S’ in ‘ESG’ is unique – for example, she has recently pivoted to work in the US, after many years in developing countries. She is leaning on her deep experience in financial inclusion in emerging markets to develop financial inclusion programmes for workers in the US.

What an absolute powerhouse! Philippa presented at one of my chapter events, and our venue was a sell-out. Phil shares her trials and triumphs, no holds barred, and has been a source of inspiration to me personally, as well as to many of our female entrepreneurs, supporters of the Future Females movement and just lovers of life in general. Her accomplishments so far are both impressive and numerous, and I am certain there will be many more to come.
TOVE KINOOKA Director & Co-founder, Global Perspectives K.K.
From an early age, Maly wanted to work with women and children, as she saw them as the most disadvantaged members of Lao society. She qualified as a nurse in 2009, spent five years working for healthcare NGOs and projects in rural areas, and is now the first Lao director of the NGO-run Lao Friends Hospital for Children. Maly’s role is central to the hospital's goal of merging with the local government institution to provide world-class paediatric care, becoming the only paediatric hospital in northern Laos that provides healthcare free of charge.
Maly has been a great leader for Lao Friends Hospital for Children. She embraces our principles of ‘treat every child as if they were your own’ and ‘compassionate care’, and this applies not only to her patients, but she also shows a great deal of compassion to her fellow staff. She has a strong and determined work ethic and demands high standards from the rest of the nursing team and those around her. She is firm but fair and, over several years, has had a positive impact upon both staff and patients. She is a credit to the hospital and the community.

Her multiple groundbreaking engineering solutions – including world-first tunnel engineering technologies and Malaysia's first digital industrialised building system – have not just advanced the industry, but also broken gender taboos; furthered diversity and inclusion; led to training and employment opportunities through knowledge-sharing and academic collaboration; and yielded unprecedented, award-winning green construction innovations.
Hui Yan Lim is hands-on on the job and appreciates issues on the ground. She works on over 13 tunnelling projects worldwide...it is not easy to find anyone like her, not least because engineers are required to work in such a harsh en vironment underground. Despite the challenges she has overcome, she insists on dedicating extra working hours to developing training modules for local young adults.
CHRISTOPHER HULL Plant Manager, Penta-Ocean Construction Company
Faryal started her gender rights and consent education NPO, The Mirror, when she was just 17 years old, growing it into an internationally-funded national network of 300 volunteers. After mentoring five South Asian girls in a DE&I-focused leadership development programme, she was hired to develop its proceeding cohort, leading 30 girls from five countries. Faryal has also coached nearly 100 disadvantaged first-year students, and recently launched Blue Rose – a startup that supports students struggling with mental health issues.
Faryal’s on-the-ground work tackles some of the most controversial and taboo aspects of cultural life, as she has organised workshops, spearheaded awareness campaigns, and designed curricula around sex education and gender rights at different levels of the education system. Faryal remains phenomenally positive despite resistance to social change from many sectors of Pakistani society.

Lim En is an inspiring and self-motivated person who gives her utmost in all her endeavours. I admire Lim En for her strong values, as well as her strong conviction and beliefs in doing what is right. She is driven to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others and often develops bold ideas to make the world a better place. I find it amazing how she balances her work as a leader in her field, while helping other female soldiers to succeed.

Konstantina is leading work on the financialisation of nature, ecosystem services, valuation and natural capital markets. She currently works on TreesAI, an independent initiative within Dark Matter Labs to create a digital platform enabling investments in urban nature – funded by Google.org and Morgan Stanley Sustainable Solutions Collaborative. She is also completing a strategic study for the European Environment Agency. With her vast expertise, Konstantina is a guest lecturer, speaker and mentor.
Konstantina believes that environmental risk is truly financial risk. Correlating climate change and financial risks is a construct to create incentives for supporting particular environmental strategies. These incentives take the form of a monetary appreciation of nature. This fabricated economic value motivates beneficiaries of nature’s services to invest in order to reduce their exposure, transforming environmental uncertainties into financial risk, to create more resilient organisations that are ready to deal with ongoing and future climate change volatilities.
RAJ KALIA Global Director, Capital & Investments, Dark Matter Labs
Eleni’s career is founded on the belief that sustainability and business can go hand in hand. In 2020, she founded Sintali, an environmental verification body and global certification partner for EDGE (a green building certification standard developed by the International Finance Corporation). Sintali focuses on verifying the environmental impact of the built environment and driving the sustainability agenda, and Eleni leads its commercial division, building strategic partnerships with banks and developing the international marketing strategy and new business streams.
We have had the pleasure of working with Eleni developing the investment ecosystem focused on green building projects – throughout the EDGE certification – as an international effort to achieve the sustainable development goals in Bolivia. Eleni is a motivational leader who has provided significant support to the local team, bringing strategic guidelines to achieve the correct quantification of active and passive actions in energy efficiency, water consumption and decarbonisation throughout the EDGE certification standard – a clear framework to mitigate climate change in the construction industry.
DANIEL MONTENEGRO Executive Director, Mesa de Infraestructura Sostenible MIS
Barbara swiftly progressed from Associate to Executive Director at Morgan Stanley, where she played a key role in building the firm’s ESG capabilities and reputation. She now heads up a dedicated Fixed Income Sustainable Investing team, where she is responsible for leading their ESG integration and for launching the division’s first suite of sustainable fixed income funds. She previously worked for the International Labour Organisation and the World Bank, where she succeeded in delivering an $80m policy lending project to the Tanzanian government to promote job creation and a transparent business environment.
Barbara has been pivotal in mainstreaming the role of engagement on ESG issues across the Fixed Income investment business, establishing a robust strategy with clearly defined thematic priorities, and almost quadrupling the number of dialogues in a year. This has contributed to exercising MSIM’s influence as a top 10 investor in support of positive sustainability outcomes, and breaking the legacy misconception that engagement is an exclusive remit of listed equity investors.
Carlotta is the Nature-based Solutions Mission Holder at Dark Matter Labs and leads the climate Fintech venture, TreesAI, an open-source platform harnessing the power of data and remote sensing technologies to collectively value and invest in urban nature. Passionate and multi-skilled, Carlotta's journey pivots around the use of design and cross-disciplinary approaches to tackle society’s systemic problems. Over the years, she has developed skills in strategic, urban, and systems design, focusing on the development and financing of digital and green infrastructure.
Carlotta is an amazing leader who has designed and built an incredible team, which is going after one of the complex problems of our age – how we understand value in the 21st century – a value which sits outside externalities and brings things that are outside our theory of accounting and value into material transformation. This isn’t just a conversation about value as an accounting idea, Carlotta is manifesting this in real-world transformation, which is absolutely necessary if we are going to deal with a climate crisis.
INDY JOHAR Executive Director, Dark Matter LabsIn her current role, as a Research Fellow in Climate and Minerals Finance at University College London, Francesca focuses on how investments and capital can support a just and fair energy transition, touching upon some of the most pressing issues and supporting scientific progress around decarbonisation, sustainability and climate-smart economies. Francesca is also an affiliated researcher at the Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change and has a solid track record of publications on climate innovations.
Climate change is one of the greatest societal challenges of our time. The contribution of academics and research is essential to design and implement the solutions we need to pursue a sustainable future. Francesca is contributing to the timely debate about the role of economics and financial capital in supporting the transition towards more just societies in harmony with planetary boundaries… What makes Francesca special is her ability to translate science-based concepts and results into policy and society-relevant actions.
Kornelia is an Assistant Professor of Finance at the University of Bern. Her research is focused on corporate finance and corporate governance, especially on insider ownership, CEO incentives, and environmental, social, and governance projects. She is a recipient of the 2021 Lamfalussy Research Fellowship from the European Central Bank as well as a Research Affiliate at the Centre for Economic Policy Research. Her research has been published in top peer-reviewed journals and presented at global conferences.
"It is not easy to summarise Kornelia's performance in the field of ESG. Here and beyond, her extensive knowledge, ability to identify new fields and then tackle the issues practically and selflessly is unique. Straightforward and extremely committed, Kornelia supports the development of StePs –the International Association of Stewardship Professionals. With practical contributions, she not only helps to define various topics and course content, but also to fill them with life through her own modules. Without Kornelia's help, it would be far more difficult for StePs to map the topics appropriately and bring the association forward."

Her current role at London Stock Exchange includes leading the proactive development of their Sustainable Bond Market – the LSE’s sustainable debt finance offering. A trained mental health first aider and qualified counsellor, she also volunteers at a suicide prevention charity.
Elena’s work and leadership at the London Stock Exchange, coordinating the LSE Sustainable Bond Market Advisory Group has made an important contribution to the UK’s overall ESG development… The LSE plays a pivotal role in the UK, where the rapid growth in the sustainable, ‘green’ bond market with a burgeoning volume of listings, is evidence of the success of Elena’s and the LSE team’s work.
TIM SKEET UK Regional Chair, Bank of ChinaSinead has campaigned for diversity and inclusion since her youth: co-founding Google’s AfroGoogle Network, launching a social enterprise to support the LGBTQ community, and founding the charity, We Are We to combat discrimination against women and to end period poverty in the UK. Outside of the charity, she is also a powerhouse consultant, having worked with over 80 multi-million dollar companies listed on the London, Euronext and New York stock exchanges. Her 10 year experience expands across world-leading companies such as Google, Shopify Plus, SocialTalent and Salesforce where she travels the world engaging in consultative relationships focused on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategies focused on changing mindsets, breaking biases and removing barriers to create a truly inclusive and psychologically safe environment for all.
It was when I ran out of my savings and could not afford basic hygiene items that I was introduced to We Are We and met Sinead. I was so ashamed and felt like a failure having to depend on food banks and donations to stay alive. In my community and age group there tends to be a lot of taboos and stigmas associated with having to use a food bank and then, even worse, having to deal with the subject of periods and not having the right products. Sinead really supported me during this tough time. If it was not for her charity and the work she does within the community I don't know how I would cope. CHLOE BOUSQUET-CHAVANNE Co-founder & Chief Product Officer, GoodstedAlly founded The Starving Artist as an art initiative that researches eating disorders; presenting publications, exhibitions, workshops and artist talks to educate people about the illness and promote prevention. Using the proceeds from these publications and events, Ally also created The Starving Artist Scholarship to provide financial assistance to individuals needing medical treatment for eating disorders. She has worked with prestigious institutions including the British Museum, the Smithsonian Museum and Art House Holland.
I commend Ally for all she has faced in her own struggles to make such a large contribution to the current discourse. Often institutions stray away from subjects such as this since it is a highly sensitive subject. Ally believes that is exactly why we need to address it. The beneficiaries of her work are both those who have lived-in experience of eating disorders and those external to the illness. It gives them a glimpse into what their loved ones have undergone and broadens their perspective. Ally’s work has helped redefine our understanding of eating disorders and explore how we can utilise the artistic and scientific voice to effect positive change.

Anna is an inspiring thought leader for women in technology. Her consistent support for women in STEM, her incredible work with WomenTech Network and her contributions to the tech industry are incredible. The quality of the events she hosts is second to none, and I count myself extremely lucky to have been a part of her incredible contribution to support more women in technology and to support more diversity in general.

Skye seeks to address health inequality through her clinical work as a doctor in the field of mental health, and through extensive charity work and public advocacy. Skye is a prolific writer, speaker and respected rural health commentator. Skye was named Victoria’s Junior Doctor of the Year in 2017; Young Victorian of the Year, and Young Australian of the Year in 2019. She has also been recognised by the Australian Financial Review as one of the country's top 100 Women of Influence and honoured in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list.
Skye’s continued commitment to improving access to healthcare services for people who live in rural and remote Australia will ensure that governments at state and federal level will be held to account to address the inequity of the issues. I personally think one of her major contributions (and likely a legacy for the future) has been to inspire the next generation of doctors to get involved and have a loud voice on shaping the future of rural health services.

OCEANIAAn influential leader in the Australian beef industry, Shannon started out as a cattle vet before turning her focus to research and genomics. After recognising a gap and crucial need in the livestock market for data transparency and supply chain cooperation, she co-founded Black Box Co, which uses animal data to shed light on how the livestock industry can positively influence the environment and move towards carbon neutrality and sustainability. Hers is a track record of pushing innovation, sustainability and community.
Shannon has a strong moral compass and clear strategic vision. This allows her to focus on one of the key goals of the company, which is ensuring the meat industry can meet the needs of a growing world population whilst operating sustainably and having minimal impact on the environment. Shannon believes the livestock industry in Australia has a great sense of community and passion and that, as a net exporter of red meat, it is Australia's responsibility to consider the sustainability, traceability and provenance of that meat, ensuring that it stands up on a world stage.
For over a decade, Yolanda has championed climate action and a sustainable blue economy, via education programmes and community action plans. In her current position with Blue Prosperity Micronesia, she leads the nation’s efforts to protect 30% of its ocean, covering over 900,000 km2. In addition, she founded the grassroots NPO, Island PRIDE, to empower women and youth fighting for climate and social justice. Yolanda was named the first-ever President’s Advocate on Climate Change and has spoken at prestigious global events.
Yolanda's entire career has been dedicated to environmental guardianship and building inherent resilience to climate change. This work has been twofold, leading action on the ground here at home since their islands are on the forefront of climate change, and secondly, advocating for climate action in the international community. Her work with Blue Prosperity Micronesia is submitting legislation to protect 30% of the Federated States of Micronesia's EEZ, one of the largest EEZs in the world. This is a significant step towards climate action and protecting biodiversity and vital ecosystems in the ocean.
ALEX OTUBANJO Community Manager, One Young WorldAn environmental scientist, climate change activist and acclaimed speaker, Nasha co-founded Sustentabilidad Sin Fronteras (Sustainability Without Borders), a rapidly growing team dedicated to campaigning and raising awareness about carbon footprint measurement and climate change. She has consulted on climate action and youth engagement to international organisations, including the United Nations Development Programme and UNICEF, and has for many years headed up the Regional Conference of Youth for Latin America and the Caribbean.
Together with Nasha, we founded an NGO in Argentina because we knew that we had to work on the issue of climate change, and we did not see anyone doing it. Being leaders of the third sector in the Third World has many challenges, mainly the lack of resources. This never discourages Nasha, who continues to get hands, volunteers, funds, places and materials so that we can always carry out our activities. Without a doubt, Nasha has helped accelerate the transition towards a fairer and more equitable planet.
DR MARIANO VILLARES Co-founder, Sustentabilidad Sin FronterasMaría is Argentina’s first woman to hold the state position of Minister of Mines, a major achievement in a male-dominated culture and industry. Adept at conflict resolution and communication, her goal is to empower sustainable development by generating greater transparency within the mining industry, so that all provinces, communities and stakeholders can access knowledge about the management of non-renewable resources. Her significant accomplishments – despite her gender, age and non-technical background –have made María an inspiration to women throughout the country.
Minister Ávila has clearly made a difference in the effort to attract sustainable mining to Argentina. She has established a process to bring mining investment to the country, at the same time as taking precautions that protect the sustainability of these projects. We have worked with her during her tenure in Catamarca and now in the federal government. Considering the new face of mining – where diversity is key for its success – Minister Ávila and her accomplishments have been a role model for girls and women in Catamarca and Argentina.
PAUL GRAVES President & Chief Executive Officer, Livent SOUTH AMERICAAnna is a scientist, biotechnologist and social entrepreneur, who works to democratise access to water and sanitation in Brazil and throughout the world. At the age of 15, she started developing Aqualuz, an affordable device with a 20-year lifespan, and the only technology in the world to treat rainwater harvesting systems using only sunlight. She has since founded Sustainable Development & Water For All to develop and launch tech that ensures access to clean water is a universal right. To date, Anna’s work has impacted more than 15,000 people.
Anna idealised the Aqualuz project… Her idea is founded on solar water disinfection and is an ideal way to meet the needs of communities who use rainwater harvesting systems. In Brazil, this represents one million people, especially in the rural semi-arid Northwest, where her firm has its headquarters. So far, the Aqualuz project has almost 1,000 units installed serving approximately 5,000 low-income people in the north-eastern region of Brazil.
ELISA SOHLMAN CEO, Brazilian Chamber of Commerce in SwedenMariana is responsible for leading the implementation and coordination of ESG strategies at the largest retail company in the western Amazon. In addition, she serves as a professor of ESG at higher education institutions, acts as an ESG consultant to other local companies, and manages one of the largest solar power plants in the Amazon. Mariana has also founded two volunteer organisations, including Tchibum, a volunteer organisation focused on increasing social activity for hospitalised children, young people and the elderly.
We live in the north of Brazil, in the heart of the Amazon. The whole world has its eyes on the largest tropical forest in the world, but the companies and people who live here know little about ESG and about how to leverage business towards strategies that bring the results that we need. Mariana is one of the people who is giving their strength and energy to this purpose. I believe she will be a significant and transforming voice, because that’s how she gives meaning to her own life.
DIEGO SIQUEIRA Agile Consultant, ObjectiveAfter completing her master’s degree in biotechnology applied to crop science, Kamila was selected for the trainee programme at BRF, one of the world’s largest global food companies. Initially focused on commodity procurement, she rose through the ranks swiftly and was promoted to Senior Analyst the following year – a role in which she headed up an initiative committed to achieving 100% traceability of all grains sourced from the Amazon and Cerrado biomes in Brazil. Kamila now leads on sustainability in agricultural commodities sourcing, including traceability, green financial strategies and emissions estimation.
I have been working with Kamila since day one of this incredible journey to develop a grain traceability process. I am really proud of the outcomes we have achieved so far. Throughout the process we have faced many challenges, but with a lot of hard work and resilience we have been very successful. I am really proud to work with this incredible professional and friend who has a bright future ahead of her!

Their educational activities have reached more than 20,000 youths… I can attest to Xiomara’s character both personally and professionally; I have constantly been impressed with her drive, positive energy and ceaseless focus on her mission.
ALEX OTUBANJO Community Manager, One Young WorldA social entrepreneur, Maria is tireless in her pursuit of sustainable solutions for issues in mental health, education and peace building. To this end, she founded Life Academy, an NGO focused on suicide prevention among young people between the ages of 14 and 28. To date, Life Academy has reached 2,000 students through school and higher education programmes across Colombia, Bolivia, Mexico, the UK and China. An influential voice for change, Maria is also a World Economic Forum Global Shaper and a One Young World Ambassador.
Maria and her team give workshops at high schools about psychosocial skills in order to decrease suicide rates among young people. Due to the difficult social situation in Colombia, many teenagers feel alone and hopeless. The methodology of Life Academy aims to prevent suicide attempts by identifying vulnerable people and providing the appropriate help. The students are shown that they are not alone and that it is OK to look for help.

LUCÍA ACURIO JARAMILLO President of Grupo Edutec and Propósito PerúDaniela’s vision is to build a more sustainable chemical industry and democratise the use of AI with a disruptive approach that leverages small datasets for the first time. To this end, she co-founded Sunthetics, a groundbreaking machine-learning platform enabling up to five times faster development of new chemicals, materials and processes, which significantly reduces waste and emissions. Daniela holds multiple patents on sustainable chemical technologies and was named on Forbes 30 Under 30 (North America) Energy list.
Daniela’s combination of talents – high drive, strong technical foundation, ability to engage relevant society stakeholders, and extreme creativity – is only found in innovators that have changed our world through technology. At a time when sustainability and AI is changing most sectors of society, it is important that the chemical industry embraces clean and smart technological breakthroughs. To do that, the chemical industry will need a champion like Daniela who can lead the development of AI-driven, scalable and sustainable chemical processes to change chemical manufacturing one chemical reaction at a time.
