Good Evening!
Welcome, to the Women in Focus 37th Annual Dream Ball Celebration, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr! This year marks our thirty-seventh year of awarding WIF scholarships, a total of 397 scholarships for over $500,000 since 1986! This amazing work is not possible without each of you!
This year’s theme is perseverance. Merriam Webster defines perseverance as, “the quality that allows someone to continue trying to do something even though it is difficult.” As we still navigate our new normal living with Covid, we must acknowledge that Covid is not the only pandemic our nation has faced. We have been living through the pandemic of racism for more than 400 years; perseverance has been necessary to continue moving forward.
Our members were inspired by hearing the words of our nation’s first Black woman Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, back in March of 2022. On the third day of confirmation hearings for her nomination, she told this story about how she felt as she walked through the courtyards as an undergrad at Harvard University in 1988. She told viewers that during her first semester she felt out of place, as though she didn’t belong. As she walked through the yard, a stranger passing by leaned over and had one word of advice: “Persevere.” This shifted her mindset; she went on to complete both her undergraduate and her law degree at Harvard.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy speaks of perseverance. He withstood the most difficult of times; he did not lose focus of his goal. He rejected hate and instead chose to spread love. As supporters of our mission and through your donations, you are keeping his vision alive and also ours! WIF continues to support the educational successes of our youth and encourage their continued perseverance! Your donations allow us to continue to encourage and support them on their journeys.
We are excited to host you in-person this evening! Please enjoy, peruse the auction, and bid on an item or two! You can also visit our website, womeninfocusmadison.org, to donate in any amount to fund WIF scholarships this spring. We hope you end the evening on the dance floor, by joining WIF members in dancing the Cupid’s Shuffle. It is great to be in community with you again! Save the date for next year, Saturday, January 13, 2024. We look forward to seeing you then!
In community!

Outstanding Dedication Award
The Women In Focus Outstanding Dedication Award is presented
to member Sally A. Hestad
Sally A. Hestad has been a WIF member since 2005. She has demonstrated her commitment to WIF’s mission of encouraging education of students of color through scholarships.

Sally can best be described as a dedicated worker bee!
In one of her first WIF meetings, Sally mentioned that she tried searching for WIF online and found nothing because WIF had no web presence.
“Sally Hestad has been a member of WIF since 2005 and she is our constant worker bee. She has served as president, secretary, treasurer, ball chair and currently serves as Development Chair. Sally steps up to serve where needed often without being asked.”
– Verona Morgan,WIF Secretary
The response from the WIF President was: “So you think WIF needs a website? We think so too, please go ahead and create us a website!” So, Sally began her WIF membership searching for a web designer, learning about web design, creating copy and securing photographs for the very first WIF website. She is instrumental in creating the WIF Ball invitations, Ball program book, and the Scholarship Endowment Fund. More recently, Sally has learned how to write, and design emailed newsletters.
Sally has also found creative ways to personally generate donations for WIF. She asks her family members to give donations to WIF for her birthday and she organizes Facebook fundraisers on her birthday and other giving occasions. She uses Amazon Smile when she orders through Amazon, and then Amazon gives a percentage to Women In Focus.
Sally has served as WIF Secretary, Ball Chair, Vice President and President. She now serves as Development Chair where she works on corporate sponsorships and the Scholarship Endowment fund. Her firm Hestad Law Office has been a consistent advertiser and more recently a major sponsor of the Dream Ball.
“Sally has been a stellar member of WIF for 15 years. Her dedication, commitment and passion for our group is unwavering. She is a calm spirit spreading JOY and PEACE in her unique way. I value her motivation and source of inspiration in moving WIF forward. When it comes to raising awareness for our mission Sally is limitless. Thank you Sally for continuing to be a treasured member of WIF.”
“Sally is a dedicated connector in Women In Focus. Her passion for this organization radiates from her, and she is always one of the first people to reach out to new members to tell our story and get them involved. Thank you Sally, for all that you do/have done for Women In Focus!”

Sally Hestad we honor you and your amazing dedication to Women In Focus!

Remembering Jan Studesville

wif M e MB er 1984-2013
It has been almost nine years since WIF member Jan Studesville and her husband Al died tragically as a result of a motorcycle accident in Texas. Their loss was shocking and terribly sad, both for their families and the entire Madison community. We miss them both so much!
We felt Jan’s loss acutely in Women In Focus. Jan Barry Studesville was energetic, passionate, and lived her life with fashionable style, grace and attitude. She was a giving person who wholeheartedly believed in the mission of Women In Focus. She was a member since the very early days of Women In Focus. She was very busy with her nail salon Just Nails, and spending time with their son Eric, his wife Staci and their children Sydni and Eric Jr., other family members and many friends. Nevertheless, she faithfully attended WIF meetings and events, and she made time to chair the WIF Scholarship Reception Committee for many years. She and Al graciously opened their home to WIF
members and spouses for holiday parties and summer gatherings around their grill. After a trip to Sam’s Club, Jan and Al seemed to effortlessly create great parties.

One of Jan’s greatest contributions to WIF was her advocacy for a WIF scholarship endowment at Madison Community Foundation. Endowments are permanent investments which can fund scholarships in perpetuity. As a result of Jan’s efforts and the efforts of others in WIF, our Endowment Fund was created in 2011, and thereafter Jan contributed her birthday money and special occasion gifts to the Endowment Fund to grow the fund.
Since Jan and Al’s untimely death, Eric, Staci, and other members of the family have continued to support WIF and the Endowment in Jan’s honor. We thank the Studesville family and the Barry family. We especially want to recognize Jan’s father Dr. George Barry who donated to WIF every year. George Barry was a retired physician who passed at age 103 in 2021. We received a very generous
I remember my friend Jan Studesville and her contributions to racial equity and entrepreneurship in our community. I knew Jan, her husband Al and their son Eric, for most of my life, having grown up down the street from them on Madison’s South Side. Jan, along with Edith Hilliard, recruited me for membership in Women In Focus and I’m forever grateful for their leadership and vision. Jan’s love of family and empowering women and youth, drew me into her friendship. My husband Don and I often traveled with Jan and Al to surrounding areas to listen to jazz and blues bands. They were always up to take in good music and good food! Jan was a spirited “cheerleader” for raising scholarship funds for our area youth and she lived for the “I Have A Dream” Ball! We dearly miss you, Jan and Al!
– Michelle Heitzinger, WIF member
contribution to the Women In Focus Endowment Fund from Dr. Barry’s estate.

Over the years the Endowment fund has grown and it is now large enough to fund one and a half WIF $2500 scholarships per year on an on-going basis. Women in Focus thanks the Studesvilles and the Barrys for their generosity. The Endowment Fund was Jan’s dream and is definitely a legacy for Jan, all WIF members and all our donors and sponsors, a legacy which will continue to provide much needed college scholarships for deserving Dane County students of color now and in the future. May you rest in peace, Jan, Al and Dr. Barry.
Jan loved WIF. Her dream was to have an a scholarship fund for students of Color forever. She was instrumental in starting the WIF Scholarship Endowment Fund. Her dedication to our children of Color and desire to continue this fund flowed like a river thru everything she touched. Jan & her husband Al have been gone for 9 years and still her dream reaches out with a substantial donation from Jan’s father, Dr. Barry, whose passion for WIF was injected into his life by Jan. We love you, Jan, and will be forever grateful to you and your beloved father Dr. Barry. Your gifts to WIF will last in perpetuity. Love & blessings forever.

If you would like to donate to the WIF Endowment Fund or make a bequest to WIF in your will, please contact Sally Hestad, sallyhestad@gmail.com or visit www.womeninfocusmadison.org for information about all the ways to donate.

The late Jan Studesville was a founding member of Women In Focus. She and her late husband Al were active participants in all WIF activities and in the community until their tragic passing in 2013. The Studesville and Barry families have generously contributed to the WIF Scholarship Endowment Fund in memory of Jan and Al. The first Jan and Al Studesville Scholarship was awarded in 2014 and we will continue to award the Studesville scholarship to a deserving continuing education student each year.

He was nominated for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Outstanding Young Person Award. Amir is attending the University of Minnesota and studying psychology. One of Amir’s references said: As a teaching assistant in the AVID program and as a tutorial leader, Amir facilitated groups to present topics, ask questions, and problem-solve. If you could see him in action, you would witness quite a powerful presence. He speaks his truth and is encouraging while standing firm that he believes, leading with confidence. This is why he is so well respected.

Julius Morgan
M e M orial S cholar S hipThis memorial scholarship honors the inspiring life and accomplishments of the late Julius Morgan who passed on December 27, 2019. Julius believed that education is the foundation for everything in life. After his death, his wife, WIF Founding Member Verona Morgan, and the Morgan family established a permanent Endowment Fund at the Madison Community Foundation to honor Julius and they requested that Women In Focus select the scholar.

Inspiring Founders Scholarship
In 2021, Women In Focus, Inc. realized a dream of funding a four-year scholarship for one scholar, to be paid at the start of each academic year of his or her four-year college degree. The funds we received in 2021 allowed us to put aside $10,000 for this special scholarship. We named it the Inspiring Founders Scholarship, because WIF members are inspired every day by the vision and tenacity of our Founding Members as they worked to advance WIF's mission to encourage students of color to further their education.
ANTONIO THOMAS graduated from James Madison Memorial High school with excellent grades. In high school, he was in National Honor Society and received an Outstanding Young Persons Award. Antonio currently attends UW Madison and plans to study engineering where he feels he can make a difference. One of Antonio’s references stated: Antonio’s curiosity, discipline, willingness to challenge himself, and the leadership he exhibits make Antonio a positive force in our school community. Further, his ambitious goals, drive, preparedness, and reliability convince me that Antonio Thomas will be an extremely successful college student and a great addition to his college campus.
ISAIAH MIELKE graduated from Sun Prairie High School in 2021. He is the inaugural recipient of the four-year Women In Focus’ Inspiring Founders Scholarship. Isaiah will receive $2,500 each August, totaling $10,000. He is scheduled to receive the third scholarship payment in 2023. Isaiah has used the WIF scholarship for books and to upgrade his computer. Now a successful sophomore at Edgewood College, the inspiring young man is determined to finish his business degree. “My goal is to open a health care business to help those with disabilities, along with the elderly,” Isaiah said. “My business will provide quality care with nurses with top training and certifications.” Isaiah’s business goal came from the difficulty his family experienced when they tried to find home care for Isaiah’s father after a serious accident. Isaiah feels honored to be recognized during the Dr. King holiday weekend. “Hearing Dr. King’s story while I was growing up was inspirational for me,” Isaiah said. “He’s a role model for our Black community, proving that Black people can succeed in America, no matter what happens.”

About Women In Focus, Inc.
Formed in 1983 Women In Focus, Inc. (WIF) is a group of about 30 energetic professional women in Madison, Wisconsin. For over thirty-nine years our members have been dedicated to the mission of creating a community in which dreams are fulfilled through a worldwide partnership where all barriers to education are erased for students of color. Every year we raise funds to provide college scholarships to both high school students and non-traditional students by hosting our annual Scholarship Dream Ball, honoring the vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. To date we have granted over 397 scholarships for a total in excess of $500,000.00. Women In Focus, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

In 2011, WIF opened its Scholarship Endowment Fund at the Madison Community Foundation. We are now focused on growing this permanent fund so that we can continue to provide scholarships for students of color into the future.
Through our Literacy Project, WIF members encourage families to read and we distribute books to children in the community. We currently are helping families at the Third Street program at the YWCA and families at the Salvation Army with books and activities. Our literacy program is supported through donations, grants and partnerships with other community organizations.

• Our 35th Anniversary Ball in 2021 and our 36th Annual Ball in 2022 were held virtually. Our wonderful family of WIF sponsors and donors continued to support WIF as we ventured into virtual programming land in 2021 and 2022. Thank you so much!
• Beginning in 2021, we added our online Silent Auction. The auction has been successful and added to our scholarship revenues. Thank you to those who donated items and to all those who bid! The auction is open until 9:30pM on January 14, and we welcome your bids!
• Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, guests and auction bidders, we have been able to increase the number of scholarships awarded from 12 scholars in 2019 to 16 scholars in 2020, then 18 scholars in 2021 and 22 scholars in 2022. Total scholarships awarded to date is 397.
• In April 2022 WIF awarded college scholarships to 22 students of color. We celebrated the students’ accomplishments at a lovely scholarship reception for family and friends at the Goodman Community Center. Thank you to Goodman Community Center for this great venue! The scholars each gave a two-minute speech about their journeys. This event is the culmination of our efforts, and it is very heartwarming to meet and hear from the WIF scholars!
• Planning and committee work for the 2023 Dream Ball began in the spring of 2022 and continued through our gala event of January 14, 2023. Our sincere gratitude goes out to all our sponsors, guests and donors who continue to make this event a success!
• WIF welcomed new members in the past two years and celebrated their arrival into our sisterhood with lovely new member events. We now have about 30 members. We are so excited to have the passion and dedication to our mission of all WIF members!
• Throughout the year, the Women in Focus Literacy Committee worked with the staff at the YWCA to bring literacy activities and books to the mothers and children of the YWCA’s 3rd Street Program. Recently we also began working with the families at the Salvation Army. Books for community distribution were purchased through grant funds provided by the Capital Times Kids’ Fund and from a generous grant from Madison Rotary.
• Members joined in the 2022 Juneteenth celebration at Penn Park by hosting our annual book booth for children and youth. We distributed hundreds of books to area children.
• In 2011, Women in Focus, Inc. proudly partnered with the Madison Community Foundation to establish a scholarship endowment fund. This fund continues to grow and now it is funding one and a half $2500 scholarships in perpetuity. Gifts to the WIF Scholarship Endowment will continue to advance us toward the goal of guaranteeing that multiple WIF Scholarships will be awarded each year in perpetuity.
With the wonderful community support that our guests, grantors, sponsors, auction bidders and donors have shown, Women in Focus, Inc. is empowered to continue our work in 2023 and beyond.
Thank you! Your help makes a crucial difference for students of color in Madison!

WOMEN IN FOCUS
Literacy Program
Women in Focus (WIF) members believe the ability to read is fundamental to future success. Since 2001, WIF has worked to promote reading and early childhood education in the greater Madison community. WIF strives to reach families of color and children with limited access to books. The WIF Literacy program’s purpose is to promote reading as a positive activity and experience for young children: to support and encourage parents to read and learn together: support school readiness and to provide age-appropriate and interesting books to families.
Beginning in 2008, Women in Focus has been partnering with the YWCA Madison Third Street program and families at the YWCA to provide programing and books. WIF also partners with community events and organizations such as Juneteenth, the Madison Children’s Museum, FOSTER’s Soul Santa Dinner, Mt. Zion Church, and others to share new books with children throughout the greater Madison community. WIF has recently started a new partnership with the Salvation Army of Dane County providing books and literacy programs to families staying in the family shelter.

The Women in Focus’ Literacy program is made possible by grants from the Madison, Rotary Foundation, the Capital Times Kids Fund and others.

We thank our grantors! We would also like to thank Cards for a Cause and Books 4 School for supporting us in getting books into the hands of children.

“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.”
