Flue gas analyser Be ready for Winter As an installer it’s essential that your flue gas analyser has a valid certificate of calibration to maintain safety standards and avoid potentially dangerous situations.

BS EN: 50379 for flue gas analysers defines that the equipment should be professionally calibrated, and those which are outside their calibration date must not be used.

Your customers should have their boiler serviced before the Winter really sets in and to reduce the risk of boiler breakdown, it is advised that they turn their central heating on for around 10 minutes each Summer month. Yet despite this awareness this often results in a huge increase in your workload.

So in order to stay ahead of the game we recommend having your analyser serviced in the Summer, ahead of the busy Autumn/Winter months.

The greenest of the green from Vaillant By 2025 the government aims to phase out the use of fossil fuel heating in new build homes. Vaillant has expanded their portfolio of renewable technologies with a new heat pump system to help support the UK’s decarbonisation journey. aroTHERM plus is Vaillant’s next generation heat pump developed in-house using the natural refrigerant R290, which allows you and your customers to be prepared for a sustainable future.

R290 is a natural refrigerant with a low Global Warming Potential of 3. Fulfilling the next nearly zero-energy buildings (NZEB) requirements and with an ErP rating of A+++, it is one of the greenest heat pumps on the market, helping your customers to reduce their carbon footprints.

By using R290 it enables aroTHERM plus to run at a higher flow temperature of 75°C, providing 25% more useable hot water than other heat pumps on the market.

Significant energy savings are also possible thanks to the efficiencies of the aroTHERM plus. Testing has seen a 10% hike in the potential energy savings compared to other heat pump solutions in new builds, and up to 43% when replacing

oil or LPG heaters in retrofit projects.

It is also one of the quietest heat pumps on the market with sound power as low as 54dBa. Launching alongside the aroTHERM plus is Vaillant’s brand new indoor unit, uniTOWER. Containing an integrated hot water cylinder and hydraulic components, it is pre-wired for fast and easy installation. With no refrigerant certification required, the connection of both the aroTHERM plus and uniTOWER modules can be completed in a single day.

Water Regulations Update

Did you know that non-compliant WC inlet valves can contaminate your customers drinking water?

As a result of this, the water regulations have been reviewed, clarified and an interim agreement has been put in place and agreed with DEFRA.

Definition of a Type AG air gap

» A non-mechanical backflow prevention arrangement of water

fittings with an air gap together with a circular overflow, the size of which is determined by measure or a vacuum test.

» The air gap being a visible, unobstructed and complete

physical air break between the lowest level of water discharge and the critical water level (CWL) within a cistern. It must not be less than 20mm or twice the inlet internal diameter ‘D’ of the inlet pipe whichever is the greater.

» The overflow must be circular and of a minimum size, 19mm providing this is capable of accommodating the maximum inlet flow.

Shower pumps Choosing the right pump for the job Shower pumps are suitable for boosting water in gravity fed plumbing systems, where there is usually a cold water storage tank in the loft and a hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard, but which type of pump is right for the job?

» Do I need a positive head pump or a universal (negative head) pump?

The gap between the bottom of the cold water storage tank and the highest point in your pipework or highest outlet determines whether your gravity fed system is positive or negative head. Positive head pumps will only work in positive head systems. Universal (negative head pumps) will work in both situations.

YOU HAVE A POSITIVE HEAD SYSTEM... If you have more than 600mm from the bottom of your cold water storage tank to the highest point in the system after the pump.

YOU HAVE A NEGATIVE HEAD SYSTEM... If your outlet or highest point in the pipework after the pump is above, or in line with, the 600mm point below the cold water storage tank.

» Do I need a shower pump or a whole house pump?

Choose Center brand if you are boosting to a conventional shower in a positive head installation. To boost to the shower and other whole house appliances such as a bath, kitchen tap or washing machine you need a whole house pump.

» Do I need a single pump or a twin pump?

Twin pumps are designed to supply both hot and cold water to showers, bathrooms and the whole house.

Single pumps are to supply hot or cold water, either to single or multiple outlets. This can often be when the cold water is mains fed and the hot needs boosting to match this pressure.

» What bar rating do I need?

For smaller individual shower heads choose 1.5 bar. For multiple outlets, medium sized bathrooms and shower heads choose 2.0 bar.

For multiple outlets and larger bathrooms with multifunction showers and body jets choose 3.0 bar.
