Die Schwierigkeit liegt darin, sie zu finden, sie dort aufzuspüren, wo sie sich verbirgt, und zu erkennen, welche Elemente sie bedingen. Dies ist schlussendlich das Ziel von Wolfgang Zingerles Suche, einer unerschöpflichen und fruchtbaren Suche, die kontinuierlich neue Möglichkeiten produziert, neue Ressourcen; genauso wie das Delta des Flusses, das sich zu immer neuen und unentdeckten Kanälen hin verzweigt.

Natürlich ist nicht jede Form Träger von Bedeutung: Die einfache Form, wie sie bereits in der Natur besteht, kann nur – da sie bereits in sich selbst vollendet ist – repliziert, wiederholt oder imitiert werden. Für Zingerle jedoch, und das gilt auch für einen großen Teil der Künstler der Moderne, liegt das Interesse nicht in der Mimesis und noch weniger in der Zurschaustellung seiner künstlerischen Fertigkeiten. Etwas anderes ist zentrales Moment: eine Form, die in bestimmter Hinsicht nicht komplett ist, partiell, empfänglich für Transformation, Beigabe und Eingriff. Eine Form, angesiedelt an der Kreuzung von Natur und Geschichte, von Raum und Zeit, von spontaner, fast mechanischer Evolution und Kultur.

Form cannot be created, as it already exists. The actual problem consists instead in the search for form, the discovery of where it is hidden, and why, the defining of which elements have determined it. This is the aim of Wolfgang Zingerle’s research: his endless though constantly fruitful quest always leads him to new openings and new resources.

Like a river delta, his art always opens into new and sometimes unexpected branches.

Of course, not all forms convey meaning. A simple shape which already exists in nature is resolved within itself. As such it can be only replicated, repeated or imitated. But for Zingerle, as for most contemporary artists, the focus is not placed on mimesis, and even less on the display of artistic ability. Something different is therefore required: a somehow incomplete and partial form, susceptible to transformation, to addition and intervention; in particular a type of form that can be located

in the intersection between history and nature, of space and time, of spontaneous — or also mechanical — evolution and culture.

La forma non si crea: esiste già. Il problema è piuttosto trovarla, andare a scoprire dove si annida, perché, quali elementi l’hanno determinata. Questo, in fondo, è l’obbiettivo della ricerca di Wolfgang Zingerle, ricerca inesauribile ma continuamente feconda e tale da produrre continuamente nuove aperture, nuove risorse: come il delta di un fiume, che si ramifica a ogni passo in nuovi e inattesi canali.

Naturalmente, non tutte le forme sono portatrici di senso: la forma semplice, che esiste già in natura ed è risolta in se stessa, potrebbe soltanto essere replicata, ripetuta o imitata. Ma per Zingerle, come per gran parte dell’arte moderna, l’interesse non sta nella mimesis e ancor meno nello sfoggio di abilità. Quindi è necessario qualcosa d’altro, una forma in qualche misura incompleta, parziale, suscettibile di trasformazione, addizione, intervento. Una forma, in particolare, posta proprio all’incrocio di natura e di storia, di spazio e di tempo, di evoluzione spontanea, o meglio meccanica, e di cultura.

With a view of this promised land, the work of art can nestle and find the perfect circumstances in order to grow and develop, each time in a different, sometimes impetuous way, other times slowly, immediately, or over a prolonged period of time.

The South Tyrolean artist does not set any limits in regard to techniques. He started as an abstract gestural painter, maybe as a reaction to the atmosphere he found in Bologna, where he lived, studied and made his first steps as painter. At that time the city was still strongly characterized by the culture of Art Informel as well as a long-lasting discussion about semiotic and gestural painting, ranging from action painting to Color Field painting and to the more recent Naturalism.

After he returned to his home in Val Pusteria in South Tyrol — a long natural corridor surrounded by mountains between Bressanone (Brixen) and the Austrian border — Zingerle’s languages multiplied, and thus

he enriched his technique, his skills becoming subtle and differentiated. Today, his work spans painting and writing, and installation as well as land art.

Hier, angesichts dieses gelobten Landes, kann sich das Kunstwerk verbergen und trifft auf die passenden Umstände für seine Entstehung und Entwicklung; diese sind manchmal heftig, reißend und unmittelbar und manchmal langsam, dem Fluss der Zeit folgend.

Der Südtiroler Künstler hält sich nicht an Grenzen, Moden oder Techniken: Sein Debüt gab er im Bereich der informellen Malerei, vielleicht auf das Klima in Bologna reagierend, der Stadt, in der er die ersten autonomen Schritte als Künstler machte; dieses Klima ist noch heute stark von der informellen Kunst sowie einer langen Reflexion bezüglich der Malerei der Zeichen und Gesten geprägt, von Action Painting bis hin zum Colorfield des letzten Naturalismus.

Später aber, als Zingerle wieder in seinen Heimatort, in das Pustertal, ein lang hingezogenes Tal, von Bergen umgeben, zurückkehrte, haben sich seine Ausdrucksformen noch einmal multipliziert, seine künstlerischen Fähigkeiten ausdifferenziert und seine Techniken vervielfältigt: Heute steht in seinem Schaffen die Malerei neben der Skulptur, die Installation neben der Land Art. Doch diese Etikettierungen müssen in diesem Fall genau geprüft und auch wieder korrigiert werden. Seine Malerei, genauso wie seine Skulptur und Installation, sind nicht von jener Art, an die wir uns gewöhnt haben oder die wir zu kennen glauben.

Denn geblieben ist nur der Rahmen, geblieben sind nur die fundamentalen Bezeichnungen: Zingerle hat die Substanz modifiziert und sein Schaffen, und das gilt für jedes seiner Werke, in unmittelbare Nähe dieses heiklen und auserlesenen und vor allem ausschlaggebenden Kreuzungspunktes zwischen Natur und Geschichte, zwischen Tautologie und Entdeckung positioniert.

Sich dem Werk Zingerles anzunähern ist keine leichte Aufgabe: Auf den ersten Blick scheint er ein eklektischer Künstler zu sein, bereit, seine Wahl des Ausdrucks an jede Gelegenheit, an jede neue Auseinandersetzung anzupassen und der internen Kohärenz, die, wie einige meinen, den unverwechselbaren und wichtigsten Aspekt der Arbeit des Künstlers darstellt, den Rücken zu kehren.

But in applying them to his art, all of these labels need be modified and corrected. His painting does not correspond to what we are used to seeing or what we believe we know, and the same is true of his sculptures and installations. Apparently there are no major differences, but appearances can be deceiving. In keeping the frame as the fundamental denomination (and thus saving appearances), Zingerle has modified the substance and located his work, every one of his works, close to that fragile and crucial intersection between nature and history, of tautology and discovery.

Qui, in vista di questa terra promessa, può annidarsi l’opera d’arte e trovare le circostanze giuste per la propria genesi e il proprio sviluppo, di volta in volta impetuoso o lentissimo, immediato o protratto nel tempo.

L’artista altoatesino non si pone limiti quanto a modi e tecniche: ha esordito come pittore astratto, gestuale, reagendo forse al “clima” incontrato a Bologna, la città dove si è formato e ha mosso i primi passi autonomi da pittore: un clima ancora fortemente segnato dalla cultura dell’informale e da una riflessione lungamente protratta a proposito della pittura di segno e di gesto, dall’action painting al colorfield all’ultimo naturalismo.

Poi però, ritornato a far base nel suo luogo d’origine, la Val Pusteria, un lungo corridoio naturale aperto da Bressanone all’Austria e avvolto dalle montagne, i linguaggi di Zingerle si sono moltiplicati, le sue abilità differenziate e le sue tecniche arricchite: oggi padroneggia la pittura come la scultura, l’installazione come la land art. Ma, nel suo caso, ognuna di queste “etichette” deve essere perlomeno riveduta e corretta. La sua non è la pittura cui siamo abituati o che pensiamo di conoscere, così come non lo è la scultura e neppure l’installazione. In apparenza, non cambia molto ma l’apparenza inganna: conservando la cornice, la denominazione fondamentale (salvando, dunque, le apparenze), Zingerle ha modificato la sostanza e posizionato il suo lavoro, ogni suo lavoro, in prossimità di quell’incrocio, così delicato e cruciale, di natura e di storia, di tautologia e di scoperta.

Loving Nature

Getting close to the work of Zingerle is not easy. At a first sight he could be perceived as an eclectic artist, able to modify his expressive strategies for every occasion and at each new approach, neglecting in this way the internal coherence and formal consistence that according to many represent the most important and meaningful part of an artist’s work. Moreover, his works are demanding to the observer: they require prolonged attention as well as concentration, interpretative intelligence and in some cases even physical effort to reach the inaccessible places where the artworks are situated.

Zingerle represents the polar opposite of the communicative, eager, self-promoting artist, who are also the managers and leading salespersons of themselves. It is therefore necessary to overcome certain hurdles, to try to develop a different point of view, adapting oneself to apparently useless,

but in fact indispensable complications. Nature, for example.

Außerdem fordern seine Werke einiges von jenen, die sie betrachten: Eine tiefe und andauernde Aufmerksamkeit, Konzentration, interpretative Intelligenz und selbst, zumindest in einigen Fällen, physische Kraft (um sie in ihrer alpinen Umgebung zu erreichen). Zingerle hat sich auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite jenes Künstler-Kommunikators, Werbefachmanns, Managers und ersten Verkäufers seiner selbst positioniert, auf die man in der heutigen Kunstwelt so häufig trifft. Es ist nötig, diese Felsen zu umschiffen, einen anderen Blickwinkel einzunehmen, die Komplexität der kleinen Dinge anzunehmen, will man zum Kern der Arbeiten vordringen. Beispiel hierfür ist die Natur, die der Künstler bestaunt und bewundert. Die Form eines Steines zum Beispiel, modelliert von den Jahrhunderten, von der Eiszeit und vom Lauf eines Flusses geglättet; ein Stein scheint unabhängig von allen äußeren Einflüssen und doch fügt auch er sich ein in die Geschichte, einer Geschichte von Transformationen und eklatanten, wenn auch langsamen, Metamorphosen.

Eine der wichtigsten plastischen Arbeiten des Künstlers (Wir sehen mit anderen Augen) nimmt seinen Anfang in genau solch einer Beobachtung der Form: Ein Stein, ein ungewöhnlich geformter Teil eines Felsens, Teil der afrikanischen Platte, bleibt eingesperrt in einem Bachbett zwischen den Bergen; ein Fragment, verloren im ewigen tektonischen Prozess. Liebkost von tausenden Jahren der Erosion, vom Wasser und der Erde, hat der Stein schon fast eine in sich bedeutende Form erreicht.

Der Künstler nimmt es wahr, nimmt es auf: ein erstes Moment. Auch Joan Mirò sammelte das vom Meer an den Strand gespülte Treibgut. Ebenfalls ähnlich ging Alberto Giacometti vor, der auf der anderen Seite der Berge, in Val Bregaglia, Steine aus dem Flussbett löste. Im Grunde sind diese gesammelten natürlichen Objekte Ready-mades, auf deren Schultern noch nicht, oder nicht mehr,1 eine Zivilisation der Maschinen, eine industrielle Kultur, ruht.

Anstelle dessen steht der natürliche Prozess, die Geologie mit ihrem langsameren, tieferen Rhythmus.

Steht diese erste Verbindung, diese Verbindung mit dem Unbewussten des Planeten Erde, greift Zingerle ein, weil das Gefundene sich in einer Form manifestiert, aber noch kein Werk darstellt: shape, hätte Ansel Adams gesagt, aber nicht form. Im Atelier unterstreicht er die Wellen, das in Stein gehauene Relief, preist die Maserung, präzisiert deren Verlauf. Wenige Eingriffe, wenige Gesten, aber genug für eine Interpretation, einen Ausdruck, eine Sprache.

A m a r e l a n a t u r a Accostarsi a Zingerle non è semplice: a prima vista potrebbe sembrare un artista eclettico, pronto a modificare le proprie strategie espressive ad ogni occasione, ogni nuovo incontro, rinunciando a quella coerenza interna, a quel formulario che, secondo alcuni, è l’aspetto più imprescindibile e significativo del lavoro di un artista. Inoltre, le sue opere chiedono molto a chi le osserva: un’attenzione protratta, concentrazione, intelligenza interpretativa, addirittura, in alcuni casi, uno sforzo fisico notevole (per raggiungerle nelle impervie contrade dove stanno). Zingerle si è posizionato all’estremo opposto rispetto all’artista comunicatore, sollecito, pubblicitario, manager e primo mercante di sé stesso.

Bisogna pertanto superare questi scogli, cercare di adottare un punto di vista differente, adattarsi a complicazioni apparentemente inutili ma in verità indispensabili. La natura, per esempio. Wolfgang Zingerle ama la natura, il che, dal suo punto di vista, significa innanzi tutto che egli ama osservare, aderire, accogliere. Per esempio la forma di un sasso, modellato dalle ere glaciali e levigato dal corso di un fiume; un sasso apparentemente immutabile e invece immerso, anch’esso, nella storia, in una storia di trasformazioni e metamorfosi eclatanti, benché lentissime.

Uno dei lavori plastici più interessanti e significativi dell’artista (Wir sehen mit anderen Augen) nasce appunto dall’osservazione di una forma così: nel letto di un torrente di montagna, un masso formato da un tipo di roccia anomala, un frammento di placca africana rimasto incastonato nelle montagne, un frammento perduto nei processi della tettonica a zolle. Accarezzato per decine di migliaia di anni dall’erosione, dall’acqua e dalla terra, il masso ha assunto una forma propria e quasi significativa in se stessa. L’artista la coglie, la nota: ecco un primo momento. Come Joan Mirò, che raccoglieva reperti gettati dal mare sulla spiaggia, o Alberto Giacometti che, dall’altra parte delle montagne, in Val Bregaglia, estraeva sassi dai torrenti. Ready-mades, insomma, alle cui spalle non c’è ancora, o non c’è più,1 una civiltà delle macchine, una società industriale, c’è il processo naturale, la geologia con il suo ritmo più lento e più profondo.

A simple, apparently immutable rock is in fact immersed in history, a history of striking

(even though very slow) transformation and metamorphosis.

One of the most interesting and meaningful plastic works of the artist (Wir sehen mit anderen Augen) in fact originates with the observation of a natural shape: a stone made of an anomalous type of rock in the bed of a mountain stream, a fragment of the African Plate stuck in the mountains, lost during the plate tectonic process.

The stone was then caressed for ten thousands of years by erosion, by water and land, developing over time a singular shape, almost significant in itself. The artist was aware of this element and perceived it. This was in fact the first moment of his artistic process.

Just like Joan Mirò, who collected what the sea left on the beach, or Alberto Giacometti, who, on the other side of the mountains, used to collect rocks from the rivers.

Behind these ready-mades there is not yet or no longer 1 a civilization of machines, there is no industrial society, but only a natural

process, geology with its slow and profound rhythm.

Once he has established this contact to the unconscious mind of the Earth, Zingerle intervenes, because — as Ansel Adams would have argued — what he has found is a shape, but not yet a form. In his studio he enhances the waves, the relief that the rock received from nature, bringing out its veins, making its waves more perfect. Few things, small gestures, although enough to represent an interpretation and a language. It is all about that very old, human action of turning a scratch into a sign, an accident into will and nature into culture. It is the coming together, the dialectics of finding and creating. In this resides the work of art, and Zingerle has found the ideal field for his intervention and research.

At this point — in order to underline this expression of being “in between”, where his work locates itself — the artists raises the stone, installing it into a light metal structure that elevates it in

midair in an unnatural way. The rock in its new position in the air is somehow temporarily and wisely correcting gravity. We are forced to look at it with different eyes (with those same different eyes the name of the work refers to) and to look at it in a very different way. Faithful and visionary, Wolfgang Zingerle loves nature, in the same way Joseph Beuys did. He works to extol its intrinsic possibilities (and to render them visible, as Klee wanted), especially those possibilities that others do not see. But there is more to it than that. The final result obtained in the process of creating the work of art is actually a magnificent starting point for further and following elaborations. Why would it be considered a good idea to stop?

Hierbei handelt es sich um eine historische Tradition, die sehr alt und sehr menschlich ist, jene, die den Kratzer in ein Zeichen verwandelt, den Zufall in Willen, die Natur in Kultur. Die Begegnung, die Dialektik zwischen dem Finden und dem Machen, ist der Ort, an dem Zingerle seinen eigenen, idealen Boden für die Suche und den Eingriff gefunden hat. Dieses „Dazwischen“, in dem sich die Arbeit des Künstlers anbringt, wird im weiteren Verlauf der Schaffung von Wir sehen mit anderen Augen sichtbar. Der Stein wird angehoben und auf einer leichten metallischen Struktur befestigt, fast so, als sei die Luft sein Element. Eine virtuose, weise, provisorische Korrektur der Gravitation, die uns das Gestein anders, neu betrachten lässt (an dieser Stelle erfüllt sich der Titel des Werks).

Visionär und treu liebt Zingerle die Natur, genauso wie sie Joseph Beuys liebte; er arbeitet daran, die ihr innewohnenden Möglichkeiten herauszuschälen, sie sichtbar zu machen (genauso wie Klee), vor allem jene, die den anderen verborgen bleiben. Doch damit nicht genug: Das Erreichte bietet eine optimale Voraussetzung für eine weitergehende Ausarbeitung und Gestaltung.

Warum hier halt machen?

Stabilito questo rapporto, rapporto con l’inconscio, se vogliamo, del pianeta Terra, Zingerle interviene perché quella che ha trovato è una forma ma non ancora un’opera: shape, avrebbe detto Ansel Adams, ma non form. In studio, egli sottolinea le onde, il rilievo acquisito dalla pietra, esalta la venatura, precisa l’andamento. Poche cose, per così dire, pochi gesti, ma abbastanza per presentarsi come interpretazione, linguaggio. Si tratta, insomma, di quell’azione antica, tanto antica e tanto umana, che trasforma il graffio in segno, l’accidente in volontà e la natura in cultura. È l’incontro, la dialettica fra il trovare e il fare, in cui abita l’opera d’arte e in cui Zingerle ha individuato il proprio terreno ideale di intervento e di ricerca.

A questo punto, e per sottolineare il termine medio, questo “stare fra” in cui il suo lavoro si colloca, l’artista solleva il masso e lo sospende a una struttura metallica leggera, che la trattiene, innaturalmente, a mezz’aria.

La pietra, a questo punto, è sopra l’aria, nell’aria, in una sorta di virtuosistica, sapiente e provvisoria correzione alla gravità che ci consente di guardarla con altri occhi (appunto quegli occhi diversi cui fa riferimento il titolo dell’opera), di vederla in tutt’altro modo. Visionario e fedele, Zingerle ama la natura come l’amava Joseph Beuys e lavora per esaltarne (renderne visibili, come voleva Klee) le possibilità intrinseche, soprattutto quelle che gli altri non vedono. Ma non è finita qui: il risultato già ottenuto offre, a questo punto, un’ottima premessa per elaborazioni ulteriori e successive.

Perché fermarsi?

Zingerle believes that art is itself a life force, in constant dialogue with other life forces at play in the universe. For this reason the work of art is not something complete but more of a preamble, a first stage, a gradum susceptible to further elaboration and to new meanings. This is possible only if every subsequent step in the process is in line with the initial dialectic, respecting the natural shape and its origin.

Wolfgang Zingerle gives art back its marvellous power: to enrich the world with new forms without imposing itself on the natural processes, without forcing the materials into development that differs from those which are possible and implied by themselves; on the contrary he reveals and expresses the entire aesthetic potential of the material.

Nach Zingerle ist die Kunst eine lebendige Kraft, die mit anderen lebendigen Kräften im Dialog und im Austausch mit dem Universum steht. Deshalb ist das Werk ein vollendeter Akt, in sich geschlossen, aber auch Prämisse, Stadium, gradum, empfänglich für weitere Gestaltung und Bedeutung: Jeder nachträgliche Schritt wirkt in Zusammenhang und Ergebenheit vor dieser anfänglichen Dialektik, vor der Form und seiner Ursprünglichkeit.

Wolfgang Zingerle gibt der Kunst ihre wunderbare Kraft zurück, die Welt mit neuen Formen anzureichern, ohne sich die natürlichen Prozesse zu unterwerfen, ohne die Materialien zu Entwicklungen zu zwingen, die nicht bereits in ihnen selbst vorhanden und möglich wären.

Um auf dem Weg fortzuschreiten, braucht es also etwas, das Ausdrucksmittel ist, aber auch Natur, gleichzeitig spontan und „künstlich“, gleichzeitig tautologisch und erfunden: der Abdruck, die Ähnlichkeit durch Kontakt.

Erst kürzlich hat Georges Didi-Huberman2 die Bedeutung der Prägung, des Stempels für die Kunst gewürdigt und in seiner epistemologischen und philosophischen Breite analysiert. Dank ihm haben wir erfahren, dass die angestammte Art und Weise wie Form stattfindet, die Valenz des perfekten dialektischen Abbildes ist: Sie erzählt vom Kontakt (der Fuß versinkt im Sand) wie auch vom Loslösen (das Fehlen des Fußes); sie transformiert die essentiellen Bedingungen der Ähnlichkeit und der Darstellung; sie nimmt die Frage des Verhältnisses zwischen Technik und Zeit, zwischen Erinnerung und Gegenwart auf.3 Alle jene oben beschriebenen sind grundlegende Verbindungen in Zingerles Werk, das sich dem Stempel, dem Abdruck bedient um den Stein neu aufzunehmen, ihn in Zement zu verdoppeln und dann noch in einer nächsten Version in Bronze zu erschaffen. Heraus kommt dabei eine kleine Serie von „analogen“ Werken (die eine reziproke Relation von Ähnlichkeit unterhalten) die aber, was Referenz und Implikationen betrifft, doch wieder verschieden sind (der Stein verweist auf die Natur; der Zement, unter anderem, auf die Arbeit, die Konstruktion, die Bronze nimmt Bezug auf die Schönen Künste, die Erhabenheit der Skulptur). Dies sind Schritte einer stringenten Logik, die die Autonomie der Ready-mades nicht bricht und einschränkt, sondern das Auge und den Blick auf andere Art beschäftigt und fordert. Die Objekte sind, will man eine syntaktische Metapher heranziehen, Synonyme der sehr unterschiedlichen stilistischen Implikationen. Trotzdem sind sie alle dasselbe Objekt, dieselbe von der Form besetzte Portion von Raum.

In order to proceed we need an element which can combine language and nature, the spontaneous and the “artistic”, tautological and at the same time invented: the imprint, the “resemblance by contact” recently revealed by Georges DidiHuberman2 in his recent and most important epistemological and philosophical writings. Thanks to him we have discovered how the most ancestral way of shaping a form — to impress onto a type of material support a sign which is able to endure for much longer than a trace, to obtain a pure copy of an object before every other creative invention — has revealed since prehistoric times various different aspects of its own anachronism of a perfectly dialectical image. One can speak of both the contact (e.g. a foot sinking into sand) and the loss (absence of the foot); this transforms the essential conditions of resemblance and representation, it raises questions about the relationship between technique

and time, between memory and present.3

These are all essential aspects within Zingerle’s work, as he uses imprints to reproduce the stone, to develop it firstly into a cement “double” version of itself and then into a further variation, in gold-plated bronze. At this point we have a small series of analogue elements (in a mutual resemblance relation to one another). Nonetheless these elements differ in their references and implications (rock recalls nature, cements recalls, among other things, construction sites, while bronze recalls the fine arts and the nobility of sculpture).

As stringent logical thoughts, these do not infringe on the autonomy of the ready-made, while still capturing the eye and the gaze in different ways. We could define them, using a semantic metaphor, as synonyms of completely different stylistic implications.

Secondo Zingerle, l’arte è una forza viva, che va posta a dialogare insieme ad altre forze vive, in atto nell’universo.

Per questo l’opera è atto compiuto, cosa in sé, ma insieme premessa, stadio, gradum suscettibile di altre elaborazioni e significati: purché, naturalmente, ogni passaggio ulteriore continui ad avvenire in ossequio a quella dialettica iniziale, nel rispetto della forma e della sua origine.

Wolfgang Zingerle restituisce all’arte il suo meraviglioso potere di arricchire il mondo di nuove forme senza “imporsi” sui processi naturali, senza pretendere di forzare i materiali a sviluppi diversi a quelli già impliciti e già possibili in essi, ma anzi rivelandone e lasciandone esprimere tutto il potenziale estetico.

Per “progredire” (avanzare, andare avanti), ci vuole dunque qualcosa che sia linguaggio ma anche natura, spontaneo e insieme “artistico”, tautologico e insieme inventato: il calco, quella “somiglianza per contatto” recentemente svelata nei suoi recessi epistemologici e filosofici e valorizzata nella sua notevole importanza artistica da Georges Didi-Huberman.2 Grazie a lui abbiamo scoperto come il modo più ancestrale di dar luogo a una forma — imprimere su un supporto materiale un segno più duraturo di una traccia, ottenere il puro calco di un oggetto, prima di ogni invenzione creativa — dispieghi sin dalla preistoria le densissime valenze del suo anacronismo di perfetta immagine dialettica: parli sia del contatto (il piede che sprofonda nella sabbia) sia della perdita (l’assenza del piede); trasformi le condizioni essenziali della somiglianza e della rappresentazione; sollevi la questione del rapporto fra la tecnica e il tempo, fra la memoria e il presente.3 Tutte relazioni essenziali nel lavoro di Zingerle, che infatti si serve del calco per “riprendere” la pietra, svilupparla in un “doppio” di cemento e poi in un’ulteriore versione in bronzo dorato. Abbiamo, a questo punto, una piccola serie di cose “analoghe” (che intrattengono una reciproca relazione di somiglianza) eppure grandemente diverse per riferimenti e implicazioni (la pietra rimanda alla natura; il cemento, fra l’altro, al lavoro, alla costruzione; il bronzo alle belle arti, alla nobiltà della scultura). Passaggi di una logica stringente, che non infrangono l’autonomia del ready-made eppure impegnano l’occhio e lo sguardo in maniera tutt’affatto diversa. Sinonimi, potremmo dire per usare una metafora semantica, dalle implicazioni stilistiche completamente differenti. Eppure sono lo stesso oggetto, la stessa porzione di spazio occupato dalla forma.

Eine analoge Reflexion betrifft auch die anderen Skulpturen, wenn wir sie so bezeichnen möchten; zum Beispiel Inflated Mirroring. Dieses große Werk aus „geblasenem“ Aluminium erwächst aus einer einfachen Spur, einem Fleck, einer mehr oder minder zufälligen graphischen Intervention und verdoppelt sich entlang der symmetrischen Achse. Der Künstler meint dazu: „Ausgangspunkt war eine Zeichnung, Tintenkleckse auf Papier. Dann mittig gefaltet und die bemalte Seite verdoppelt sich auf der anderen. Die Zeichnung wurde daraufhin digitalisiert und mit Laser ausgeschnitten.

Nachdem ich die Form geschweißt und das Objekt mit Pressluft aufgeblasen hatte, wurde die Zeichnung zur Skulptur“.

Auch in diesem Fall geht es um Interpretation, um nicht-arbiträre Entwicklung. Die Form existierte bereits vorher, sie hätte so bleiben können: Doch der Künstler möchte sie in den Kreislauf einfügen, in einen Prozess; er möchte das Werk, in sich selbst verankert und definitiv, in Phänomen, Fließendes, Metamorphose, im Grunde in Leben verwandeln.

Der Abdruck, oder besser dieser spezielle Prozess des virtuellen Abdrucks, den man Fotografie nennt, stellt die Basis für das Selbstporträt Projection of Thoughts und den Objekten The Crazy Game with Thoughts I & II dar. Im ersten Fall handelt es sich um ein Bildnis des Künstlers im Profil, gereinigt von allem Beiwerk, in einen veralteten, fast pathetischen ovalen Rahmen gespannt, gemalt in einem platten hellblau, beinahe in einen Klein-Blau.

Das Ergebnis ist eine umwerfende Präsenz, unverkennbar der Künstler selbst, aber auch unverkennbar mehr als er selbst. Auch in diesem Fall hat Zingerle ein Bild in einen Prozess geworfen um es dann einer Weiterverarbeitung zu unterziehen. Er hat, immer der klaren Linie des Profils folgend, eine Art Hologramm daraus entnommen um dann zu einer dreidimensionalen Plastik des Selbst zu gelangen. Daraufhin hat er in einem, offensichtlich surrealistisch geprägten Anfall von Grausamkeit, noch Abdrücke seiner Hände gefertigt und sie eingespannt in einer Art unheimlichen Reliquien-Tisch (Selbstportrait-Tisch), Reflection, der von einem formalen Blickwinkel aus betrachtet stark an Giacometti erinnert, vor allem wenn es um den Künstler als Köper geht, als Objekt. Von diesem Standpunkt aus erinnert der Tisch an das Schaffen einer anderen Persönlichkeit, die mit Zingerle einige profunde Gemeinsamkeiten zu haben scheint: Piero Manzoni.

Manzoni war der erste, der radikalste Beschwörer des Künstlers nicht als Genius sondern als Körper: Als Körper-Produzent von Objekten und Sinn, im Hinblick auf der von Deleuze und Guattari einige Jahre nach dessen Tod herausgearbeiteten Bedeutung.4

Yet they are the same object, the same proportion of space occupied by the same shape.

A similar reflection is also valid for the other “sculptures” by the artist, if we even want to call them sculptures. For example Inflated Mirroring is a large-scale work in “blown” aluminium that has been created starting from a very simple trace, a stain, a more or less casual graphic intervention, doubled around the axis of symmetry. To express this using the words of the artist: “The starting point was a drawing, some India ink spots on a piece of paper folded together, with the drawn part being reflected in the other.

The drawing was then digitized and laser-cut. Finally I welded the shape and inflated it with compressed air. The drawing became a sculpture…”

Here again, it is all about interpretation, a development that is not arbitrary, but also not necessary — not something

Una riflessione analoga scaturisce a proposito di altre “sculture” dell’artista, se così vogliamo chiamarle, a cominciare da Inflated Mirroring un grande lavoro in alluminio “soffiato”, che nasce da un semplice tratto, o macchia, o intervento grafico più o meno casuale, raddoppiato intorno all’asse di simmetria. Scrive l’artista “Punto di partenza era un disegno, macchie di china su carta, piegata poi a metà, e la parte pitturata si rispecchia sull’altra parte. Il disegno è stato poi digitalizzato e tagliato a laser. Dopo di che ho saldato la forma e l’ho gonfiata con l’aria compressa. Il disegno si è fatto scultura...”.

Anche in questo caso si tratta di un’interpretazione, uno sviluppo non arbitrario (non deciso dal capriccio dell’artista ma in base a un’elaborazione in qualche misura meccanica, cioè esterna) ma non necessario. La forma c’era già, avrebbe potuto restare così: l’artista invece la vuole “rimettere in circolo”, inserire in una processualità, trasformare l’“opera”, in se stessa “fissata” perenne e definitiva, in fenomeno, fluido, provvisorio, metamorfico, insomma vivo.

Il calco, o meglio quello specialissimo procedimento di calco virtuale che è la fotografia, è stato alla base anche dell’Autoritratto Projection of Thoughts, degli Oggetti The Crazy Game with Thoughts I & II, e dell’Oggettotavolo Reflection, che ne è stato successivamente elaborato.

Si tratta, nel primo caso, di un’immagine dell’artista di profilo, a mezzo busto, depurata da tutti gli accidenti, inserita in una cornicetta ovale, desueta e quasi patetica nella sua funzione nobilitante e dipinta di un azzurro piatto, quasi un blu-Klein.

Il risultato è un’immagine di fissità sconvolgente, inequivocabilmente lui, l’artista, ma anche, altrettanto inequivocabilmente, altro – da – sé. Anche in questo caso, poi, Zingerle ha inserito l’immagine in un processo per sottoporla a un’elaborazione ulteriore, e ne ha ricavato una specie di ologramma, dando spessore, per così dire, alla linea pura del profilo, in modo da ottenere un corpo plastico a tre dimensioni. Poi, in un impeto di crudeltà di stampo apertamente surrealista, ha aggiunto a questo elaborato alcuni calchi della propria mano e li ha incastrati in una sorta di inquietante tavolo-reliquiario, o “tavolo-autoritratto” che, dal punto di vista formale, ricorda fortemente quello celeberrimo di Giacometti (1933) e che però, a mio parere, consiste piuttosto in una collezione di dati significativi sul sé, sull’artista, quell’artista come corpo, dunque come cosa. Da questo punto di vista, il tavolo va associato allora, piuttosto, alle operazioni di un altro personaggio con cui Zingerle presenta non poche affinità profonde, cioè Piero Manzoni. È Manzoni il primo, e più radicale, fautore dell’artista non come genio ma come corpo: corpo produttore di cose, di detriti e di senso, nell’accezione elaborata da Deleuze e Guattari alcuni anni dopo la sua morte.4

created according to the caprice of the artist, but rather the result of a mechanical addition to an already extent external processing.

The shape already existed and could have remained the way it was. However, the artist wanted to “put the shape back into the circle”, to allow a new process to begin, to transform a “work” that was fixed, perpetual and definitive in itself into a fluid, temporary and metamorphic, i.e. alive phenomenon.

The imprint, or better yet the highly special processing of the virtual imprint represented by photography, was the starting point for the self-portrait Projection of Thoughts, the objects The Crazy Game with Thoughts I & II, and the table-object Reflection as a result of further elaboration of the former. In the first case, the work of art is an image of the artist’s half-length profile, cleansed of all imperfections and inserted into an oval out-dated frame — which looks almost pathetic in its aristocratic

function — painted in a flat light blue, almost a Klein-blue. The result is an image characterized by an upsetting fixity. It unmistakably represents the artist, but at the same time something unmistakably other-than-the-self.

Zingerle has inserted the image into a process in this case too, running it through further processing and creating an hologram.

He gave thickness to the pure line of the profile in order to obtain a three-dimensional plastic body.

And then, in an outburst of cruelty, typical of Surrealist art, he added some casts of his hand to this work, setting them in a disturbing table-reliquary or “table-self portrait” which is informally reminiscent of the famous work by Giacometti (1933). This work of art consists, according to me, rather of a collection of significant data regarding the self, the artist, the artist as body, and there-

fore the artist as object. From this point of view the table should be associated with the works of another artist whom Zingerle has a profound affinity with: Piero Manzoni. Manzoni was the first and most radical proponent of the artist not as genie but as body: the body as a producer of things, of detritus and of meaning, as Deleuze and Guattari said, some years after Manzoni’s death.4

Born of Movement is also the result of processing, not strictly of copying, but nonetheless still an imprint. In this work, liquid cement was drained into a crate, crossed inside by a web of metal threads in order to interrupt the continuity of the empty.

Zingerle wanted, as he explained, to retain some “freedom” in the sculpture, avoiding both the necessity of modelling and the problems posed by traditional sculpture, which interprets a shape “by removing” — as Michelangelo wanted — or by atelier practices, which define sculpture as working

Das Werk Born of Movement (das man mit „Geburt der Bewegungen“ übersetzen könnte, also von neuem „Stempel“ der Bewegung) ist nicht aus einem Prozess des Abgusses heraus entstanden, sondern aus einem des Abdruckes: Der Künstler gießt flüssigen Zement in eine Schalung, die mit einer Art Netz metallischer Fäden durchfurcht ist, sodass die Kontinuität der Leere unterbrochen wird.

Zingerle versucht, so sagt er selbst, eine gewisse Freiheit der Skulptur zu erhalten. Er vermeidet die enge Dichotomie der traditionellen Plastik die nur das Abnehmen (Michelangelo) oder das Hinzufügen kennt.

Der Künstler hingegen versucht anderes: Er geht von einer freien Bewegung des Körpers und der Hand aus, einem graphischen Zeichen, lässt die Erinnerung an ein großes Fossil durchscheinen, mit einem Kern, einem Stamm, einem flossenähnlichen Fortsatz. Es gibt keine Präzision, keinen Halt für den Betrachter, nur einen leisen Widerhall. Von dem ersten Schritt geht es dann zur Ausgestaltung der Form (Negativ), das heißt zur Vorbereitung der Behälter um dann schlussendlich, über den Abguss zu der Skulptur zu gelangen. Diese erinnert den Betrachter an einen Totem, an archaische Meere, an Fossile und Sediment.

Anche Born of Movement (che potrei provare a tradurre come “nato dal movimento”, quindi di nuovo impronta del movimento) è elaborata nuovamente a partire da un processo, non strettamente di calco, ma comunque di impronta: colando cemento liquido in una cassa forma solcata all’interno da una specie di rete di fili metallici, in modo da interrompere la continuità del vuoto.

Zingerle, stando a quanto lui stesso afferma, cercava di mantenere una certa “libertà” nella scultura, evitando la strettoia posta dalla tradizione plastica che la interpreta o “per via di levare”, come voleva Michelangelo, o “per via di aggiungere”, come suggeriscono le pratiche d’atelier e la necessità del modellato. L’artista ha cercato invece di fare un’altra cosa, partendo da un libero movimento del corpo e della mano, da un segno grafico che in qualche modo accarezza, cioè lascia risuonare, la memoria di una specie di grande fossile, con un nucleo, un tronco (colonna vertebrale), un’appendice pinnata. Non è nulla di preciso e definibile, soltanto un’eco. Da questo si passa alla messa in forma (negativo), cioè alla preparazione del contenitore e poi, finalmente, attraverso la colata (né aggiunger né levare), l’artista perviene alla scultura, “sua” ma “non sua”, forma-base anch’essa, di grandi dimensioni, che si erge come una specie di primitivo totem, memore di mari arcaici, di fossili e di depositi sedimentari.

“by adding”. The artist attempted to create something else, starting from a free movement of the body and the hand, from a graphic sign which somehow resembles a kind of oversized fossil with a core, a trunk (vertebrate spine) and a flipper-like appendix. The shape is neither precise nor definable, but rather an echo. Starting from this, Zingerle proceeded to create a shape (negative), i.e. the preparation of the crate and eventually the draining of the cement (neither removing nor adding anything) creating “his”, though “not his”, sculpture.

The resultant sculpture is a basis-shape of large dimensions, standing like a kind of primitive totem, reminding one of ancient seas, of fossils and sediments.

It is not by chance that this shape, so elaborated and complex, has become a prototype for later processing, namely those subsequent steps made in the glassworks of Adriano Berengo in Murano, one of the most openminded workshops for the innovative and creative use of glass.

Es ist wohl kein Zufall dass auch diese Form, so komplex wie sie sich präsentiert, zu einem Prototyp für nachfolgende Arbeiten geworden ist. Bei dem Prozess war dieses Mal eine große Glaswerkstätte beteiligt, jene von Adriano Berengo in Murano, die sich der innovativen und kreativen Verwendung von Glas verschrieben hat. Der Künstler nutzt hier die Möglichkeit, ein weiteres Mal das gradum zu erklimmen und nimmt mit Bedacht die Matrix der Form über das fragile und kostbare Material Glas auf.

Daraus schöpft er einen Reichtum an möglichen Ausdrucksformen und chromatischen Effekten für die es kaum Vorbilder in der Geschichte der Kunst gibt; am ehesten erinnern seine Skulpturen an die Präsenz und gleichzeitige Schwerelosigkeit der Totem von Antony Cragg. Doch im Gegensatz zum englischen Künstler, dessen vorrangiges Ziel es ist, die Transformation vom „Flüssigem zum Festen“ sichtbar zu machen, wie auch der Titel einer seiner Ausstellungen suggeriert, ist Zingerle vor allem an der Farbe interessiert, an diesem unerschöpflichen Reichtum von Übergängen und Nuancen die nur das Glas ermöglicht, die nur aus seiner Beschaffenheit und seiner transparenten Konsistenz hervorgehen können.

Die in den Werkstätten von Murano entstandenen großen vertikalen Farbexplosionen präsentieren sich punktiert, gestreift, vom Winde verweht, von Maserungen durchzogen, fuchsia und kobaltblau und scheinen die letzten ungeahnten und virtuosen Früchte der Gesetze der Biologie zu sein, die die spontane Entstehung von noch unbekannten natürlichen Organismen regeln.

Sie haben einen Stamm, ohne Pflanzen zu sein, sie haben Flossen, ohne Fische zu sein und Flügel, ohne Vögel zu sein.

Die Farbe ist nicht auf dem sondern im Glas, ist integrierter Teil der Form und der Materie: Diese eigentümliche Charakteristik hat es Zingerle erlaubt die Tyrannei der Oberfläche zu durchbrechen.

Here Zingerle had the possibility to reach a higher gradum, by reconsidering the matrix through glass — a valuable and fragile material, both sumptuous and versatile. He gained new and richer expression possibilities as well, as further chromatic effects.

The result is a work with few precedents in contemporary art, perhaps similar to the powerful though very light totem of Antony Cragg.

Zingerle’s interest — differing from the case of the English sculptor, who tried to monitor and make the passage “from flow to stability” visible, as stated in the title of one exhibition dedicated to these works of art — focuses much more on colour, and thus on the endless richness in passages and shades that only glass makes possible. These are not superimposed to the material but are rather generated by its own body, by its own transparent consistency.

were produced during those months in the workshop. They are illuminated by red wine-coloured fuchsia and cobalt blue streaks, and recall the last unforeseen and virtuous results of those biological laws which govern the spontaneous growth of natural, although still unknown, organisms. They have a trunk, but are not vegetables, flippers without being fish, wings but are not birds.

The colour in the glass is not added onto the material but is an integral part of both the shape and the material. In this way Zingerle could overcome the tyranny of the surface — which is both a resource and a difficulty — and could go beyond those elements characterizing sculpture until then. On the other hand, how could it be another way?

Sculpture is, in its nature, ideally divisible into “body” and “surface”.

E non è un caso che anche questa forma, così elaborata e complessa, sia diventata un prototipo per elaborazioni successive, intendo, questa volta, quelle compiute grazie alla complicità di una grande officina del vetro, quella di Adriano Berengo a Murano, fra gli studi più aperti all’utilizzo innovativo cioè creativo del vetro.

Qui, Zingerle ha avuto modo di salire un’altra volta di gradum, riprendendo in considerazione la matrice della forma attraverso a quel materiale prezioso e fragile, sontuoso e versatile che è il vetro: e ne ha ottenuto una ricchezza di possibilità espressive e di effetti cromatici che ha pochi precedenti nell’arte contemporanea e che riporta ai possenti ma leggerissimi totem di Antony Cragg.

Però, a differenza dello scultore inglese la cui esigenza è soprattutto quella di monitorare e di rendere visibile il passaggio “dal fluire alla stabilità”, come recita il titolo di una sua mostra dedicata a queste opere, Wolfgang Zingerle è intimamente interessato al colore, a quell’illimitata ricchezza di passaggi e di sfumature che solo il vetro rende possibile e che non sono super-imposte alla materia ma scaturiscono dal suo stesso corpo, dalla sua consistenza trasparente.

Le grandi costruzioni verticali prodotte in questi ultimi mesi nel laboratorio muranese, striate, puntinate, abitate dall’aria, accese da venature vinaccia, fucsia, blu cobalto, sembrano l’ultimo, imprevisto e virtuoso frutto delle leggi biologiche che regolano la crescita spontanea di organismi naturali ancora sconosciuti. Hanno un tronco, senza essere vegetali, delle pinne, senza essere pesci, e delle ali, senza essere uccelli.

Il colore, nel vetro, non è sopra ma “dentro” l’impasto, è parte integrante della forma e della materia: questa peculiare caratteristica ha permesso a Zingerle di superare la tirannia della superficie, risorsa ma anche impasse, che ha caratterizzato la sua ricerca plastica fino a quel momento.

I believe that a great part of modern sculpture has been trying for this reason to break and jeopardize this dichotomy.

Henry Moore, for example, tried in some crucial works from the series Mother and Child, to re-verse the interior to the exterior. Before him Brancusi: his reflection about the surface goes so far, that he damages the existence of the body, contrasting appearance and substance, letting the former prevail (The Beginning of the World). Zingerle is part of this sequence because he shares the same passionate interest or the need to think about this unavoidable element. “What is surface? Where does it start and where does it finish? What is this thing creating the shape?” These are all questions the artist poses himself, concluding: “In the end, what we see is only light. All and only light.”

Die Skulptur ist ihrem Wesen nach konzeptuell, aufteilbar in „Körper“ und „Oberfläche“ und ein bedeutender Teil der Erfahrung der modernen Plastik kreist um den Versuch, diese Dichotomie zu durchbrechen und sie bloßzulegen: Henry Moore zum Beispiel versuchte dies in seiner grausamen Werkserie Mother and Child, indem er das Innerste nach Außen kehrte; vor ihm war es Brancusi, dessen Reflexion über die Oberfläche die Konsistenz des Körper augenscheinlich machte, der das Äußere der Materie gegenüberstellte und dem ersteren den Vorzug gab (Der Weltanfang). Zingerles Schaffen fügt sich ein in diese Serie von Auseinandersetzungen. Der Künstler teilt das leidenschaftliche Interesse daran und hat die Notwendigkeit der Reflexion über das Verhältnis beider Elemente erkannt. „Was ist Oberfläche? Wo beginnt sie, wo hört sie auf? Was macht die Form zur Form?“ fragt sich der Künstler und meint: „Am Ende, am Ende ist alles was wir sehen Licht. Alles ist nur Licht.“

Zingerles Arbeiten an der Oberfläche, die von ähnlichen Prämissen geprägt sind wie jene der Avantgarde, haben gegensätzliche, aber dialektische Wirkung.

Die Oberfläche aus Glas ist das Gegenteil der spiegelnden Oberfläche, der Oberfläche aus polierter Bronze, von Brancusi bis hin zur Obsession geglättet und poliert.

Während Letztere die Welt des Beginns symbolisieren (Einschnitte die zwischen den Formen gezeichnet sind, zwischen dem Vollem und dem Leeren) versinkt bei Zingerle die Oberfläche in der Materie bis sie selbst zur Materie wird; oder, anders ausgedrückt, die Oberfläche besetzt alles und nur die Farbe scheint zu vibrieren, irgendwo im Inneren, darunter, an einem unbestimmten Ort. In beiden Fällen werden die Oberfläche sowie ihre definitive, konstante Bedeutung in Frage gestellt.

Dies scheint eine der bedeutendsten Richtungen zu sein, die die zeitgenössische Skulptur einschlägt; eine Richtung, die sich den der Skulptur eigenen Problematiken nicht a priori verweigert. Doch scheint dies hinsichtlich Zingerles Schaffen, noch nicht alles zu sein.

In his case we can say that the work on the surface, starting from a similar basis as the avantgardes, has led in this case to opposite though dialectical results. The surface of glass is the opposite to the mirror-like obsessively polished bronze surfaces of Brancusi.

D’altra parte, come potrebbe essere diversamente? la scultura è, per sua natura, divisibile concettualmente, ma solo così, in “corpo” e “superficie” e, io credo per questo, una parte significativa dell’esperienza plastica moderna, si è rivolta al tentativo di infrangere, di compromettere questa dicotomia: Henry Moore, per esempio, in alcune opere cruciali della serie Mother and Child, ribaltando o meglio estroflettendo l’interno all’esterno; prima di lui Brancusi, la cui riflessione sulla superficie arriva al punto da compromettere la consistenza del corpo, da contrapporre, se vogliamo, l’apparenza alla sostanza e far prevalere la prima (L’inizio del mondo). Zingerle si inserisce in questa sequenza perché condivide l’appassionato interesse o, per meglio dire, il bisogno di riflettere su questo elemento imprescindibile. “Che cos’è la superficie? dove comincia e dove finisce? che cos’è questa cosa che fa la forma?”, si domanda l’artista “Infine, è tutta luce quel che noi vediamo. Tutta e soltanto luce.”

Nel suo caso dunque, si può dire che il lavoro sulla superficie, partito da premesse simili a quelle delle avanguardie, ha prodotto risultati opposti ma dialettici.

La superficie del vetro è l’opposto delle superfici specchianti, di bronzo polito e levigato fino all’ossessione da Brancusi.

Queste ultime riflettevano il mondo nel simbolico uovo dell’inizio (e quindi scomparivano in quanto divisioni, solchi tracciati fra le forme, fra il pieno e il vuoto), mentre, nel primo caso, la superficie affonda nella massa fino a dissolversi in essa; o, alternativamente, a occuparla tutta, lasciando vibrare da qualche parte, dentro, sotto, in un luogo indefinibile, solo il colore. In entrambi i casi, comunque, la superficie è messa in questione e il suo valore definitorio, stabile, compromesso irrimediabilmente.

Sembra questa una delle strade maestre della scultura contemporanea, quella perlomeno, non troppo abbondante, che non ha rinunciato a-priori a occuparsi dei problemi propri della scultura. Ma, nel caso di Zingerle, questo non è tutto.

The latter reflected the world in the symbolic primordial egg — and therefore vanishes in the functions of divisions, furrows among the shapes, between full and empty. In the former the surface sinks into the mass disappearing in it or alternatively occupying it all, letting only colour vibrate somewhere inside, underneath or in some indefinable place.

In both cases, however, doubts are cast upon the surface, its defining, stable and irreparably compromised value.

This could be seen as one of the main avenues of contemporary sculpture. One at least that has not a priori stopped to care about the actual problems of sculpture.

But, as far as Zingerle is concerned, this is not everything.

Traps for the Eyes

Observing Wolfgang Zingerle’s oeuvre from an ideal theoretic distance we notice that on the one hand, his research proceeds contemporaneously along parallel binaries. Superficially, we could call them paintings, sculptures, or installations. On the other hand, time does not count for much within the organisation of this productive stream.

It is a rare occurrence, and therefore quite difficult to identify a language “evolution”, a progress or regress in the work of this South Tyrolean artist.

On the contrary, and despite appearances, his work seems to be “born adult” and maintains, from one technique to the other, an admirable internal coherence, a remarkable capacity of constantly renewed words and approaches to modalities, without neglecting the underlying issues.

Wenn wir von einer theoretischen Distanz aus über die Werke und das Schaffen von Wolfgang Zingerle nachsinnen, erkennen wir einerseits, dass seine Suche stets auf parallelen Geleisen verläuft (eine grobe Einteilung wäre Bilder, Skulptur und Installation) und andererseits, dass die Zeit als Faktor in der Ausführung der produktiven Strömungen nur wenig zählt.

Es ist schwierig, in dem Schaffen des Südtiroler Künstlers eine richtige Evolution des Ausdrucks, ein Fort- oder Rückschritt auszumachen. Sein Werk scheint „Erwachsen geboren“ und beinhaltet, ob jetzt die eine oder andere Technik verwendet wurde, eine bewundernswerte interne Kohärenz, die Fähigkeit, die Sprache, die Modalitäten der Annährung immer wieder neu zu erfinden, ohne die tiefgreifenden Fragen aus den Augen zu verlieren.

Nehmen wir zum Beispiel die Malerei und die sogenannten Bilder. Zingerle hat seine ersten Schritte, es wurde bereits erwähnt, in dem Kontext der informellen Malerei getan um sich dann plötzlich bewusst zu werden, dass die Bekundungen von Subjektivität, die erregten, sensiblen, solipsistischen, wenn auch ästhetisch ausgereiften Expression des Ichs ihn nicht interessieren.

Also begann er sich dem Studium der antiken Präparation, der traditionellen Techniken von Holz und Leinwand aus Mittelalter und Renaissance zu widmen. Einmal diese Vertiefung durchlebt, war Oberfläche nicht mehr notwendig und der Künstler hat selbst die Reaktionen der Oxydation und die natürliche Evolution der Farben aufgenommen und studiert. Es macht also Sinn, weniger von Materialien als mehr von Reagenzien und weniger von Malerei als von einem kontrollierten Experiment, von einem beherrschten chemischen Prozess zu sprechen.

Auch ein anderes Mal wird das Werk eingefügt in eine Atmosphäre der Relation zwischen den Dingen; trotzdem führt das Werk eine ästhetische Erfahrung herbei, nicht nur die Erfahrung der Farbe, sondern auch der Landschaft, hervorgerufen durch Werknamen wie The Sea and the Sky are Divided (2001) oder I Was on the Lunar Surface (2011).

tableaux. Zingerle has taken the gesture, as mentioned above, of the late informal painting of Abstract Expressionism. Only then did he find out, almost immediately, that the formulation of subjectivity, the sensible, solipsistic but aesthetically repaying craving, as various expressions of the “self ”, did not interest him. Therefore the artist started to dedicate himself to the study of ancient preparations, to traditional medieval and Renaissance techniques, for wooden but also for canvas-based works. At the end, as the physical and metaphorical “deepening” became exhausted, for once there was no more need of the surface, since the artist was already below it. The surface had already begun to well up on its own, due to the reactions of oxidation and the natural evolution of the patina.

Thus, it makes sense to speak not so much of materials as of reagents, to speak not so much of painting but instead of a controlled experiment employing

Caso raro, è difficile, nel lavoro dell’artista altoatesino, individuare una vera “evoluzione” del linguaggio, un progresso, o regresso. Anzi, a dispetto delle apparenze, il suo lavoro sembra “nato adulto” e mantiene, da una tecnica all’altra, un’ammirevole coerenza interna, una capacità notevole di rinnovare continuamente le parole, le modalità di approccio ma di non perdere di vista le questioni di fondo. Prendiamo, per esempio, la pittura, i cosiddetti quadri. Zingerle ha preso le mosse, lo si è detto, dal tardoinformale per poi accorgersi, quasi immediatamente, che le enunciazioni di soggettività, le frementi, sensibili, solipsistiche, benché esteticamente appaganti, espressioni dell’io non lo interessavano. Allora ha cominciato a dedicarsi allo studio delle preparazioni antiche, delle tecniche tradizionali, medioevali e rinascimentali, tanto per il legno quanto per la tela. Alla fine, una volta, esaurito questo “approfondimento”, fisico e metaforico, non c’era più bisogno della superficie (l’artista era già sotto), che infatti ha incominciato a scaturire da sola dalle reazioni di ossidazione e di evoluzione naturale delle patine. Ha senso, dunque, parlare non tanto di materiali quanto di reagenti e non tanto di pittura quanto di esperimento controllato di un processo chimico.

Allora, un’altra volta l’opera finisce immersa in un’atmosfera di relazione fra le cose, anche se essa non manca di provocare, alla fine, un’esperienza estetica, non solo di colore (bel colore e bei colori, godibili nelle nuances e negli accostamenti) ma addirittura di paesaggio, evocato, talvolta, anche da titoli come The Sea and the Sky are Divided, oppure I Was on the Lunar Surface, eseguito esattamente dieci anni dopo.

a chemical process. In this way, the work ends up again immersed in an atmosphere of relations between things, even if it finally evokes an aesthetic experience, not only of colours (as there are beautiful colours, nuances and compositions to experience) but also of landscape. Sometimes this is evoked by titles like The Sea and the Sky are Divided (2001), or I Was on the Lunar Surface, developed exactly ten years after the first named.

In other words, the landscape is not there: it has not been painted but only suggested, for example by streams of colours that remind one of cascades, or by a horizontal line that suggests the horizon to our eye, which looks for certainties and guarantees.

They are indeed “tableaux”, their configurations only apparently “abstract” or distant memories of far-away landscapes. In reality, they are the result of the accurate observation of the artist, and the controlled manifestation of those substances or, if one prefers,

“reagents” that the artist has utilized in that circumstance in his work.

Thus, at times the discourse enters deeper areas and even questions the vocation of painting, intended as an intervention on a bi-dimensional surface: in his inexhaustible exploration of reagents and unusual materials, the artist has in fact found a soft and versatile template, able to respond to the taste for imprints and finger marks mentioned earlier. This is how works such as The Beast are born, or also Wigetdes (a wordplay, i.e. “how does this work” in colloquial German), or Die Täuschung der ungeachteten Kinder.

In anderen Worten: Die Landschaft ist nicht auf der Leinwand (sie ist nicht gemalt), doch wir erahnen sie, sie wird uns suggeriert durch Ströme von Farben, die an Wasserfälle erinnern oder durch eine Linie, die unser Auge und unser Gehirn auf der Suche nach Halt und Garantien als Horizont interpretiert. Es sind im Grunde Bilder, deren figurative Manifestationen nur zum Teil abstrakt sind; deren hervorgerufene Erinnerungen an versunkene, entfernte Orte das Resultat von Aufmerksamkeit, von genauer Beobachtung des Künstlers sind. Sie sind auch Ergebnis der kontrollierten Manifestation der Substanzen, oder, wenn man so will, der „Reagenzien“ die sich in diesem Umfeld zu einem Werk fügen.

Bisweilen wird die Malerei bis hin zum Möglichen ausgereizt, sie wird zur Intervention auf einer zweidimensionalen Fläche: Der Künstler trifft auf seiner unermüdlichen Exploration von Reagenzien und ungewöhnlichen Materialen auf ein weiches und geschmeidiges Gummi, das sich erneut einfügt in den Diskurs um Abdruck und Spur, der bereits angeschnitten wurde. So entstehen Werke wie The Beast oder Wigetdes (ein Wortspiel aus dem deutschen Dialekt: „Wie geht das?“) und Die Täuschung der ungeachteten Kinder.

In altre parole: il paesaggio non è lì (non è stato dipinto) ma è suggerito, per esempio da rivoli di colore che ricordano cascate, oppure da una linea orizzontale che al nostro occhio in cerca di certezze e garanzie suggerisce appunto l’orizzonte. Sono, insomma, “quadri” le cui configurazioni, solo apparentemente “astratte” o, invece, memori di lontani paesaggi, sono in realtà il risultato dell’attenzione, dell’osservazione accurata da parte dell’artista, e della manifestazione controllata delle sostanze, o se si preferisce dei “reagenti” che in quella circostanza egli ha messo in opera.

Talora poi, il discorso si approfondisce ulteriormente e mette in gioco la stessa vocazione della pittura, intesa come intervento su una superficie bidimensionale: l’artista infatti, nella sua inesausta esplorazione di reagenti e materiali inusuali, ha incontrato una gomma morbida e versatile, capace di rispondere al gusto per il calco e l’impronta di cui si è già parlato. Nascono così lavori come The Beast, o Wigetdes (sorta di gioco di parole in dialettale tedesco che si potrebbe approssimativamente tradurre: “Come funziona questo?”) e Die Täuschung der ungeachteten Kinder.

Once these paintings have abandoned the two-dimensional notion, i.e. that of the virtual plateau, they become reliefs, works that are situated half-way between surface and space, between picture and object. Thus they continue to evoke and to act as a response to the traditional languages, which are precisely denied from the inside: for example, observing Wigetdes Red, one automatically thinks of Pollock. But in this case, the work has ceased for quite some time to be the “arena” of “dance” for the artist, and therefore the work became a soft body with double skin, upsetting the spontaneous narration of the colour lines.

In another example, The Beast, the work is created by using a ready-made, Black Experience, which is a composition of half-burned wooden tables that have been deeply inscribed by fire and have thus become “completed” (Zingerle is always looking for the unfinished shape) by little acrylic interventions.

Diese Bilder sind Reliefs, Werke, die zwischen der Fläche und dem Raum, zwischen Malerei und Skulptur situiert sind. Sie beschwören die traditionellen Ausdrucksmittel und verweisen auf sie; gleichzeitig werden sie vom Inneren heraus widerrufen: Wie könnte man, Wigetdes Rot betrachtend, nicht an Pollock denken? Doch das Werk ist nicht „Arena“ für den „Tanz“ des Künstlers, sondern wird zum weichen Körper seiner zweiten Haut, die die spontane Narration der Farblinien in Erregung bringt. In einem anderen Fall, The Beast, entsteht das Werk aus einem Ready-made, Black Experience, einer Komposition aus Holzbrettern, die tief vom Feuer verkohlt sind (die Form, nach der Zingerle sucht ist die partielle), vervollständigt von kleinen Eingriffen mit Acryl.

Dieses Werk, das an den Grundriss eines Ortes erinnert, das aber keinen Grundriss darstellt, wurde wiederum dem bevorzugten Prozess des Künstlers unterworfen und wurde zur Matrix für einen Abdruck in erstaunlichem bonbonrosa. Durchzogen von fortschreitenden Reliefs die unterschiedliche Höhenabstufungen hervorrufen, an Deskription und Kartographie erinnern, hart und stabil erscheinen, wird der Betrachter überrascht, wenn er das Werk berührt: Es ist weich, gibt der Berührung nach, es verführt und führt in die Irre.

Dieses Werk steht in Folge einer weiteren traditionellen Praktik der Kunst, jener des trompe l’œil, die vor allem für das Bühnenbild und die Architektur der Renaissance von Bedeutung war und hier als maieutisches Mittel verwendet wird. Das Werk Die Täuschung der ungeachteten Kinder berührt zusätzlich einen neuen Bereich, jenen des sozialen Engagements.

In den zahlreichen stechenden Auswüchsen, in den Nägeln und Spitzen die aggressiv aus der Oberfläche in unser Auge dringen, können wir möglicherweise eine Metapher erkennen: das soziale Risiko das die Schar der Kinder, die ohne liebende Fürsorge aufwachsen, in sich birgt; der Kinder, die in Erziehungsheimen landen, an jenem mineralischen Ort aus Granit und ohne Farbe, die dieses seltsame und einnehmende Werk darstellt.

Von neuem ist es eine Frage des Blickwinkels: Es gibt jene, die sich dem Werk über die Idee annähern, dem Schein der Oberfläche und jene, die darüber hinausgehen, die Grenze überschreiten, darauf zugehen, es… berühren und so von der weichen Konsistenz dieser so kalt, hart und gefährlich scheinenden Spitzen überrascht werden. Auch Kunstwerke brauchen Fürsorge und Mut zum Kontakt. Wolfgang Zingerle hat diesen Prozess, der von einer Emotion, einer didaktischen Erfahrung initiiert wurde, herausgearbeitet, und so die Bedürfnisse der Jugendlichen sichtbar gemacht.

This work calls to mind a landscape as viewed on a map, but it is not: it has in turn been immersed in the stream of processes favoured by the artist, it has become the “matrix” for an astonishing pink imprint. Its progressive reliefs evoke once again altimetries or level curves, something descriptive and cartographic or at most hard and natural, whereas if one touches the work he will find it on the contrary to be soft and sensitive to pressure, seductive and elusive.

Let us re-exhume here another traditional artistic practice, the trompe l’œil as the arrival point of scenography and of a certain type of Renaissance architecture, suggested here as a Maieutic instrument — maieutics that in the work Die Täuschung der ungeachteten Kinder acquire further nuance, i.e. that of social engagement. In fact within the numerous acute protuberances, almost like spikes and spines that aggressively project out from the surface and menace the eye, we

can perhaps recognize a metaphor for social risk, of “children without care” who live in neglect and thus become wild and unruly and end in a reformatory, within the kind of mineral, colourless, granite landscape that this weird and surprising work manages to evoke. But once again, it is a question of approach: there are those who renounce and are content with appearances and superficial ideas (speaking of surfaces).

In contrast, there are those who go beyond this, come closer and… touch the surface. Only then, they will found out that these hostile and dangerous-looking spines are made of a soft texture. There is the need to take care also in terms of regarding an art work.

Wolfgang Zingerle has elaborated this process and developed this research on the base of an emotion and a didactic experience that has helped him to better comprehend some of the often unfulfilled requirements of the youth of his region, and in fact not only the youth.

Abbandonata la nozione di pellicola, piano virtuale, questi quadri diventano rilievi, opere situate a metà strada fra la superficie e lo spazio, la pittura e la scultura. Essi però continuano a evocare, ad agire di rimando nei confronti dei linguaggi tradizionali che, proprio per questo, vengono smentiti dall’interno: guardando Wigetdes Rosso per esempio, come si fa a non pensare a Pollock? ma qui, il lavoro ha cessato da tempo di essere “arena” della “danza” dell’artista ed è diventato morbido corpo dalla doppia pelle, che scompagina la narrativa spontanea delle linee di colore.

In un altro caso, The Beast, l’opera nasce da un ready-made, Black Experience, una composizione di tavole di legno semicombuste, profondamente incise dal fuoco, “completate” (la forma di cui Zingerle va in cerca è in sé imperfetta, incompiuta) da piccoli interventi ad acrilico. Questo lavoro, che ricorda un paesaggio visto in pianta, ma non lo è, a sua volta è stato immerso nel flusso processuale prediletto dall’artista, ed è diventato “matrice” per un calco dal sorprendente rosa confetto, i cui rilievi progressivi evocano, di nuovo, altimetrie o curve di livello, qualche cosa di descrittivo e di cartografico, o al massimo di duro e di naturale, mentre chi si avventura a toccare l’opera la scopre morbida e cedevole al tatto, seduttiva e ingannevole.

Si riesuma qui un’altra pratica tradizionale dell’arte, quella del trompe l’œil, punto d’arrivo della scenografia e di una certa architettura rinascimentale e suggerito qui come strumento maieutico. Maieutica che, in Die Täuschung der ungeachteten Kinder acquista una sfumatura nuova, quella dell’impegno sociale. Infatti nelle numerose protuberanze acute, quasi chiodi o spine che si protendono aggressivamente al di fuori della superficie, minacciando l’occhio, riconosciamo, forse, una metafora del rischio sociale, dei “bambini senza cura”, cioè vissuti nell’incuria e pertanto divenuti selvaggi, sfrenati e finiti in riformatorio, in quella specie di paesaggio minerale, granitico e senza colore che questo strano e sorprendente lavoro ugualmente evoca. Ma, di nuovo, è una questione d’approccio: c’è chi rinuncia e si accontenta delle apparenze, delle idee che si è fatto superficialmente (a proposito della superficie).

C’è chi, invece, va oltre, si avvicina e… tocca, scoprendo così la consistenza morbida di queste punte dall’aspetto tanto ostile e pericoloso. C’è bisogno di cure, anche per l’opera d’arte.

Wolfgang Zingerle ha elaborato questo processo e sviluppato questa ricerca sulla base di un’emozione e un’esperienza didattica, che l’hanno portato a comprendere meglio alcune esigenze, tanto spesso disattese, dei giovani della sua regione. E non solo.

The Gold of our Mountains

“I took the theme of the rock dragged by the glaciers: in some way it shares a lot with us, e.g. the matter which surrounds us everywhere, the rocks. And the rock… transforms itself through time, times much longer than ours, but also we as human beings transform ourselves, though in a shorter time. Thus, the rock stone shows us the flow of time and our own existence.”

These words, written by Zingerle some years ago to introduce a particular work made on erratic rocks and stones, are originated by a series of experiences lived in the mountains, one could perhaps say, during regular periods, as if this profound and ancient need would emerge from time to time: to confront and test the solemn and severe language of nature.

Das Gold unserer B e r g e „Ich habe das Thema der von den Gletschern geformten Steine aufgenommen: Wir haben etwas mit ihnen gemeinsam. Steine umgeben uns überall. Die Steine wandeln sich mit der Zeit, durch Zeiten, die unendlich länger dauern als unsere Existenz. Doch auch die Menschen verwandeln, verändern sich. Der Stein lässt uns den unaufhaltsamen Fluss der Zeit erkennen und unsere eigene Existenz betrachten.“

Diese Worte schrieb Zingerle als Einleitung zu einem Kunstwerk, das Felsen und erratische Massen zum Thema macht. Seine Sätze entstammen einer Serie von Erfahrungen am Berg, die der Künstler in regelmäßigen Abständen macht, so als ob immer wieder diese alte und tiefe Notwendigkeit aufblüht: Die Sprache, den Ausdruck auf den Prüfstand zu legen, mit der Natur zu konfrontieren. Zingerle sucht hier natürlich nicht nach romantischer Läuterung, es geht nicht um Flucht oder um „schöne“, pittoreske Objekte; er sucht, wie bereits vorhergehend im Zuge anderer Serien erwähnt, nach möglichen Formen und dem Modus der Relation zwischen den Dingen (Zwischen dem Menschen und der Natur, zwischen der Geschichte und der Natur, zwischen dem Neuen und dem Alten…).

Die Steine also, sind nur dann Träger von Bedeutung, wenn sie im adäquaten Kontext positioniert und von einem bestimmten Blickwinkel aus betrachtet werden. Deshalb ist einer der signifikantesten Aspekte genau jener der Prüfung des Gesichtspunktes, der Konstruktion eines strategischen Settings, das diesen sichtbar, wahrnehmbar und zugänglich macht.

Ein Beispiel hierfür ist das Setting von Der unbeugsame Wille, eine Installation, die der Künstler vor einigen Jahren schuf: In einem geschlossenen Ambiente findet sich der Betrachter einer Art von Wald aus Schilfrohr gegenüber. Sie sind akkurat zugeschnitten, an einem metallischen Gitter befestigt und hängen umgekehrt von der Decke herab. Die Schilfrohre sind für sich alleine gewachsen, basierend auf einer mechanischen Grundlage, einem stetigen Fortschreiten, ihrer eigene Form und Zeit folgend, die kaum oder gar nicht vom menschlichen Willen beeinflussbar sind.

“Ho preso il tema del sasso trascinato dai ghiacciai: in qualche modo, esso ha molto in comune con noi. La materia che ci circonda dappertutto, i sassi. E il sasso… si trasforma col tempo, tempi più lunghi dei nostri ma anche noi uomini ci trasformiamo in un tempo più breve. La pietra ci mostra il flusso del tempo, e l’esistenza di noi stessi.”

Queste parole che Zingerle ha scritto qualche anno fa per introdurre un particolare lavoro fatto su rocce e massi erratici, derivano da una serie di esperienze compiute in montagna, si potrebbe dire a intervalli regolari, come se di tanto in tanto affiorasse sempre di nuovo questa antica e profonda necessità: quella di andare a confrontare il linguaggio sul banco di prova, solenne e severo, sempre quello, della natura.

In esperienze come queste, naturalmente, Zingerle non cerca purificazione romantica, non cerca evasione e neppure soggetti “belli”, pittoreschi; cerca, come si è già detto a proposito di serie diverse, possibili forme e modalità della relazione fra le cose (e fra l’uomo e la natura, la storia e la natura, l’indotto e l’innato, il nuovo e il vecchio….).

I sassi, dunque, sono portatori di senso se, e soltanto se, vengono posizionati nel contesto adeguato, colti dal punto di vista giusto. Per questo, il lavoro dell’artista, o uno degli aspetti più determinanti e significativi di tale lavoro, sta proprio nell’esame del punto di vista, nella costruzione di un setting strategico che lo renda visibile e percepibile.

Il setting, per esempio, di Der unbeugsame Wille (La forza indomabile), un’installazione di alcuni anni fa: in un ambiente chiuso, i visitatori si trovavano posti di fronte ad una specie di bosco di canne accuratamente tagliate e appese al contrario da una griglia metallica parallela al soffitto. Le canne, evidentemente, erano cresciute per conto loro, in base a una meccanica, a un andamento, a una forma e a un tempo loro caratteristico e poco, o niente affatto alterabile, dalla volontà umana.

In such experiences, of course, Zingerle is not looking for a romantic purification, for entertainment or “beautiful” and picturesque subjects. As has been mentioned already about different series, he is looking for possible forms and modalities

of relationships between things (man and nature, history and nature, the induced and the innate, the new and the old…).

The stones are thus vehicles of sensibility, if and only if they are set in the appropriate context, perceived from the right point of view. For this reason the work of the artist, or one of the most characteristic and significant aspects of such work, is the analysis of the point of view, the construction of a strategic setting, which could make it visible and perceivable.

So is the setting, for instance, of Der unbeugsame Wille (The Untameable Force), an installation realized a few years ago: the visitors find themselves in a closed environment, facing a sort of reed field, carefully cropped and hung upside down from a metallic grid, in parallel to the ceiling.

The reeds, evidently, have grown independently, dependent on their characteristic pattern, form and time, unalterable by human will. An artist cannot stop, slow down or impede the coming of spring — as the artist comments — as he cannot force reeds to grow differently from their own way. But he can — and moreover, must — intervene alongside, without trying to emulate nature (which would be ridiculous) but by posing tenaciously and firmly an idea, on its own, as his contribution to the World.

“How could one stop spring… it is impossible. Nature is untameable!” says Zingerle.

But “the artist explains the core of an idea. An idea is the strongest thing that a man possesses. The artist, therefore, is untameable when he creates his works, which nature could not produce.” So he fastens the single reeds, collected on the given territory, and installs them upside down, one after the other.

Here is the point of view, constrained but winning: whatsoever natural element has become language, an unrepeatable word but without losing its “prompt ready” reference, its ready-made, also nature.

Ein Künstler kann den Einzug des Frühlings nicht aufhalten, verlangsamen oder beeinflussen, meint Zingerle, genau so wenig, wie er die Schilfrohre zwingen kann, auf eine differente Art als jene ihre eigene zu wachsen. Aber er kann, oder muss, auf seine Art und Weise eingreifen, ohne der Natur nachzueifern (das wäre lächerlich), aber mit Überzeugung und Durchhaltevermögen seine Idee, seinen Beitrag, der Welt hinzugeben.

„Wie könnte man den Frühling aufhalten…das ist unmöglich. Die Natur ist unbezähmbar“ kommentiert Zingerle. Aber „Der Künstler entfaltet den Kern der Idee.

Die Idee ist das stärkste was der Mensch besitzt. Der Künstler ist dann unbezähmbar, wenn er Werke schafft, die die Natur niemals erschaffen könnte.“ So befestigte er die einzelnen Schilfrohre, die er am Land gesammelt hatte und installierte sie kopfüber, eine nach der anderen.

Hier also wieder der Gesichtspunkt: Ein beliebiges Element der Natur wird zum künstlerischen Ausdruck, zur unnachahmlichen Sprache, ohne jedoch die bereits innewohnende Referenz, sein natürliches Ready-madeWesen, zu verlieren. Für Zingerle ist diese Dialektik von solch einer Wichtigkeit, dass er bereit ist, fast alles dafür zu tun, um sie zu erhalten; selbst dann, wenn dies bedeutet, dass seine Werke deshalb an einem nur schwer zugänglichen Ort positioniert werden, der für ein Publikum von Laien (in diesem Fall nicht jene der Kunst, sondern des Trekkings) nicht einfach zu erreichen ist.

Diese Praktik ist bekannt und schlängelt sich einer illustren Geschichte entlang: von Heizer und Smithson bis hin zu Richard Long; die Notwendigkeit, aus den Ateliers und Galerien auszubrechen, hat ein ganzes künstlerisches Genre geschaffen.

Un’artista non può fermare, o rallentare o impedire, l’arrivo della primavera, commenta l’artista, come non può costringere le canne a crescere in un modo diverso da quello loro proprio. Però può, anzi deve, intervenire a sua volta, non cercare di emulare la natura (ridicolo) ma porre con tenacia e convinzione un’idea, la sua, il suo contributo al mondo.

“come si può fermare la primavera,...è impossibile. La natura e indomabile!....”, asserisce Zingerle. Però “L’artista spiega il nucleo di un’idea. Un’idea è la cosa più forte che possiede l’uomo. L’artista quindi è indomabile quando crea opere, che la natura non mai potrebbe fare.” Così egli attacca le singole canne, raccolte sul territorio, e le installa capovolte, una dopo l’altra. Ecco quindi il punto di vista, forzato ma vincente: un elemento naturale qualunque è diventato linguaggio, parola irripetibile senza però perdere il suo riferimento “già pronto”, il suo essere anche ready–made, anche natura. Per Zingerle, questa dialettica è così importante che egli è disposto a quasi tutto pur di ottenerla: anche a posizionare il proprio lavoro in un luogo quasi inaccessibile, difficile da condividere con un pubblico di non esperti (in questo caso però non d’arte ma di trekking).

La pratica è nota ed ha una storia illustre: da Heizer a Smithson fino, soprattutto, a Richard Long, la necessità di “uscire” dagli studi e dalle gallerie ha dato vita a un intero genere artistico.

For Zingerle this dialectic is so important, that he is ready to do everything to obtain it, even placing his works in an almost inaccessible locations, rendering them difficult to share with a public of non-experts (in this case it is not about art but about trekking). This practice is already known and has a long history: from Heizer to Smithson and in particular Richard Long. The need to “escape” from the ateliers gave life to an entire artistic genre.

Hier liegt der Akzent auf der Zartheit der Aktion, auf der provisorischen Präsenz des Künstlers der, anstatt in die übliche Arroganz der „Vaterschaft“ eines Werkes zu verfallen, das Territorium mit seinen Schritten kennzeichnet, mit seinen einfachen, abgestimmten Akten, low impact und ökologisch. Für Zingerle liegt der Punkt wie immer in der Dialektik von einem als künstlich deklarierten Zeichen, der geraden Linie und den bewegten Umrissen der Berge, auf die keine gerade Linie hinaufführt. Man trifft auf einen Felsen, ein Schlucht oder sonst etwas und muss abbiegen, Umwege machen.

„In der Natur existiert die gerade Linie nicht, je mehr man in die Berge geht, umso absurder wird es, an gerade Linien zu denken. Ich habe eine Gegenlinie geschaffen, dort wo es keine gibt“, erklärt der Künstler.

So entstand Zip Line, eine 1.700 Meter lange Spur, die sich über einen Gletscher ausdehnt, in 3.000 Metern Höhe. Eine „Verschlusslinie“ sagt der Titel, zwischen Gestein und Eis, aber auch von Neuem zwischen Mensch und Natur, und, genauer, zwischen Orientierungssystemen; zwischen der „Zartheit“ der Beobachtung, des Blickes der den Falten der Erde nachspürt und der gleichgültigen „Gewalt“ gegenüber des Einschnitts, der die Kontinuität der Dinge durchbricht. Die Dialektik ist in diesem Fall eine ökologische und steht nicht nur in Zusammenhang mit dem Ort, sondern auch mit Orientierungssystemen die im Gegensatz zu der Geometrie (griechisch: Maß der Erde) stehen, mit antiken Gewohnheiten der Orientierung, die auf der Rekonstruktion der Umrisse der Berge mit Stäbchen und Knochenstücken basieren. Diese alten Methoden teilen sich Bergvölker und Eskimos, Völker die es gewohnt sind, von der Natur umgeben zu leben, ohne gerade Linien, ohne sich am geraden und flachen Horizont orientieren zu können.5

Dies ist das erste Werk Zingerles das, nebenbei auf die charakteristische Dialektik näher eingehend, fast beiläufig, quasi als kollateralen Effekt, die Ästhetik des Sublimen aus der klassischen Antike (PseudoLonginos), später wiederaufgenommen von Burke und Kant, theoretisiert.

It should be underlined, by the way, that the emphasis is on the softness of the action, on the provisional presence of the artist, which, without claiming a phallic “paternity” of the work, makes something different: he signs the territory with his steps, with his low impact and ecologist measuring.

For Zingerle, the point is instead as usual the dialectic between a sign which is clearly artificial and incongruous, the straight line, and the irregular profile of the mountains, where not only are no straight lines present, but where it is impossible to even walk on a straight path. One finds on the way a rock or a canyon and must change route.

“The straight line does not exist in nature. The more one travels in the mountains, the more it become absurd to think in terms of a straight line. I made, then, a contrasted line, there where no straight line exists.

Thus was created Zip Line, a red track 1700 meters long, laid through a glacier at an altitude of more than 3000 meters above sea level. It is a zipper-line, as the title says, between rocks and glacier, but also, again, between man and nature and, more specifically, between orientation systems, between the “softness” of the attention to the profile, of the sight adherence to the earth’s folds and the indifferent “violence” of the cut, of the line breaking the continuity of all things. The dialectic, in this case, is on an environmental scale and exists in relationship to the landscape and to orientation systems, to the juxtaposition of “geometry” (from the Greek: “measure of the earth”) and primitive orientation habits, based on the reconstruction of the mountain profiles with sticks and bone pieces, shared by both Alpine and Eskimo civilizations, those who are used to living within natural landscapes, without straight lines, without being able to count on a plain and straight horizon.5

Va sottolineato però che l’accento qui è posto sulla delicatezza dell’azione, sulla presenza provvisoria dell’artista che, invece di arrogarsi la fallica “paternità” dell’opera, fa un’altra cosa, segna il territorio con i suoi passi, con i suoi semplici atti di misura, low impact e ecologici.

Per Zingerle, invece, il punto è come sempre, la dialettica fra un segno dichiaratamente artificiale e incongruo, la linea retta, e il profilo mosso delle montagne, dove non solo non ci sono rette ma non si può neppure camminare secondo un tracciato troppo dritto. Si incontra un masso, poi un burrone, poi qualcos’altro e bisogna deviare.

“In natura non esiste una linea retta, più si va in montagna più pare assurdo pensare a una retta. Ho fatto allora una linea a contrasto, laddove non esiste una retta”, spiega. È nata così Zip Line, una traccia rossa lunga 1700 metri, distesa attraverso un ghiacciaio, a oltre 3000 metri d’altezza. Una linea-cerniera, dice il titolo, fra rocce e ghiacciaio ma anche, di nuovo, fra uomo e natura e, più specificamente, fra sistemi d’orientamento, fra la “delicatezza” dell’attenzione al profilo, dello sguardo che aderisce alle pieghe della terra, e la “violenza” indifferente a tutto del taglio, del solco che spezza la continuità delle cose. La dialettica, in questo caso, è su scala ambientale, ed è in relazione non solo al paesaggio ma ai sistemi di orientamento, alla contrapposizione di “geometria” (dal greco: “misura della terra”) e delle antiche consuetudini di orientamento basate sulla ricostruzione dei profili delle montagne con bastoncini e pezzi di osso, condivise da popoli alpini ed eschimesi, popoli abituati a vivere in paesaggi naturali, senza linee rette, senza poter mai contare su un orizzonte piano e diritto.5

È questo il primo lavoro di Zingerle che, approfondendo e affondando nella dialettica che gli è caratteristica, sfiora quasi incidentalmente, come effetto collaterale, l’estetica del sublime teorizzata nell’antichità classica (pseudo-Longino) e poi ripresa, fra gli altri da Burke e da Kant.

This is the first Zingerle work which, by investigating and rooting itself in the dialectic that is so typical for him, touches almost incidentally, as a collateral effect, on the aesthetic of the sublime, theorized in the classical age (pseudo-Longino) and then reprised by Burke and Kant among

The matter, I would like to say, at least concerning Zingerle, is about not being satisfied with the pleasure of the mimesis and of aesthetic fulfilment as art as consumerism, but about insisting, searching for the right conditions for the “future”, of a phenomenon that manifests itself. Something in which consciousness can move, even if just a little: to move itself in the astonishment of the “terror”, as the ancients used to say, at least of a durable impression or trace.

The most remarkable result (it is appropriate in this case to use the attribute “extraordinary”, at least in its etymological sense), in this sense and until now, has been obtained by Zingerle with Gold Target, elaborated as a collateral event during Manifesta7 in 2008. This work is about the recovery of an old pylon of the Austrian railway crossing the Val Pusteria Valley, on which entire and extremely difficult chapters of

Der Punkt dabei ist, dass nicht es nicht darum geht, sich dem Gefallen hinzugeben, der Mimesis, oder der ästhetischen Befriedigung (im Sinne der Kunst als Konsum), sondern die richtigen Konditionen für das Eintreten eines Phänomens (für das, das sich manifestiert) herzustellen.

Infolgedessen kann sich das Bewusstsein verändern, auch wenn es nur marginal ist: Es verschiebt sich hin zur Befremdung, zum Schrecken, in eine dauernde „Impression“(Abdruck), wie die Menschen in der Antike sagten.

Das wichtigste Ergebnis in diesem Sinne hat Zingerle ohne Zweifel mit dem für die Manifesta 2008 geschaffenem Werk Gold Target erreicht. Hierbei handelt es sich um die Wiedergewinnung eines alten Bahnpfeilers der ehemaligen Eisenbahn der k. u. k. Monarchie, die durch das Pustertal führte und auf der sich, vor allem um die Jahrhundertwende und während des ersten Weltkriegs, ganze Kapitel der europäischen Geschichte abgespielt haben. Während des zweiten Weltkrieges war die Bahnlinie als strategische Verbindung zwischen Italien und Kärnten wichtig und wurde 1944 und 1945 Ziel mehrerer Bombardements um den Deutschen den Rückzugsweg abzuschneiden. 1975 wurde eine neue Bahntrasse eingeweiht, die neben der alten Linie verläuft, und die Geleise wurden mitsamt der Brücke, die der Pfeiler stützte, entfernt. Der Pfeiler hingegen blieb dort wo er war: Ein Monolith aus Granit in einem Wäldchen. Zu teuer, um ihn zu entfernen, dem Vergessen anheimgegeben.

Der Künstler suchte und fand eine Möglichkeit, ihn aus seinem Nicht-Sein, zu der ihn die abhanden gekommene Funktion verurteilte, zu befreien und verwandelte ihn in ein immenses, goldenes Idol ohne Nutzen, von der Erinnerung an sich selbst und von einer puren Hypothese von Schönheit gehalten, so unermesslich wie schwierig zu erreichen, da er sich einfügt in die schöne, pittoreske Natur dieses Alpentals, weit weg von den strategischen Epizentren der Kunstwelt.

European history passed, at the end of the Nineteenth Century and during the First World War, when the zone was an area of resistance to the Empire. Then again during the Second World War, when due to its strategic relevance as a connection line between Italy and Carinthia, it was senselessly

Il punto, vorrei dire, almeno per quel che riguarda Zingerle, è di non accontentarsi del piacere, della mimesis e dell’appagamento estetico (arte come consumo) ma di insistere a creare le condizioni giuste per “l’avvenire” di un fenomeno (ciò che si manifesta), attraverso cui la coscienza si sposti, anche se di pochissimo: si sposti da sé nello sconcerto o nel “terrore”, come dicevano gli antichi, comunque in un’impressione (impronta) durevole.

Il risultato più notevole (vale la pena di spendere proprio in questo caso l’aggettivo “straordinario” almeno in senso etimologico) in questo senso, e fino ad oggi, Zingerle l’ha ottenuto senz’altro con Gold Target, elaborato come evento collaterale in occasione di Manifesta 7 nel 2008.

Si tratta del recupero di un vecchio pilone della ferrovia austriaca che attraversava la Val Pusteria e sul quale hanno transitato interi, difficilissimi capitoli della storia d’Europa, alla fine dell’800 e durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale, quando la zona fu un’area di resistenza dell’Impero. Poi, durante la Seconda Guerra e per la sua importanza strategica di collegamento fra Italia e Carizia, esso fu inutilmente preso di mira dai bombardamenti alleati del 1944-45, che cercavano di tagliare le vie di fuga ai tedeschi in ritirata (e forse anche a qualche treno lager diretto a nord). Infine, nel 1975, con l’inaugurazione del nuovo viadotto che gli passa proprio accanto, i binari e le traversine furono rimosse insieme al ponte sovrastante il pilone, che fu abbandonato così come stava: un monolite di granito in una boscaglia, che sarebbe stato semplicemente troppo costoso distruggere.

L’artista ha trovato il modo di riscattarlo dall’atavico abbandono cui l’aveva consegnato il disuso e di trasformarlo in un immenso ed inutile idolo dorato, innalzato alla memoria di se stesso e di una pura ipotesi di bellezza, tanto più incommensurabile quanto più difficile da raggiungere e immerso nella deliziosa, “pittoresca” natura di questa valle alpina, lontano da qualunque location strategica del mondo dell’arte.

bombed by the Allies between 1944 and 1945 in the effort to cut the lines of retreat (and maybe also pave the way to some deportation convoy). Finally, in 1975, after the inauguration of the new adjacent viaduct, the binaries and the sleepers were removed, together with the bridge over the pylon, which was abandoned just as it was: a granite monolith in the woods, which was simply too expensive to be demolished.

The artist found a way to redeem it from the old dereliction of its abandonment. He transformed it into an immense and useless golden idol, erected in memory of itself and with a pure hypothesis of beauty, even more immeasurable since it is difficult to reach and is immersed in the sweet and “picturesque” nature of this alpine valley, far away from any strategic location of the artistic milieu. On the other hand, it is precisely the total gratuitousness and the total necessity of this intervention which makes Gold Target a

masterpiece, a work mirroring one of the most vital and productive ways of conceiving art: of redeeming the ruins of the past, revitalizing it while also “betraying” it, in the perspective of offering a new creation, a new possibility.

And art, all art of all times, is mostly about this: it jumps over existence, over the immanence of daily habits, towards a continent of possibilities always unknown and never completely knowable.

At least until living sparks will exist, worth entering God’s heaven, as Bettina Brentano once wrote to Goethe.

Auf der anderen Seite ist es genau jene Einheit von Unbegründetheit und absoluter Notwendigkeit des Eingriffs, die Gold Target zu einem Meisterwerk macht; dieses Werk spiegelt wider, was stets der produktivste und vitalste Modus der Kunst war: Die Vergangenheit vom Geröll befreien und sie gleichzeitig mit neuer Bedeutung erfüllen, mit neuen Möglichkeiten der Welterfahrung aufladen.

Die Kunst, die gesamte Kunst jeder Ära, war im Grunde immer vor allem eines: Der Blick hinter den Vorhang des Existierenden, hinter die dingliche Realität des Alltäglichen, hin zu einem Kontinent voller unbekannter Möglichkeiten, die sich von uns nie ganz fassen lassen werden. Zumindest solange noch, schrieb Bettina Brentano an Goethe, lebendige Funken existieren, sind unsere Werke würdig, in das Reich Gottes einzugehen.

Ei n m a h n e n d e r zeitzeuge Die Geometrie seit Euklid hat uns gelehrt, reduzierten Raum mit an den Menschen angepassten Maßstäben zu ermitteln. Später, mit Bolyai, Lobatschewskij und Riemann lernten wir, ausgedehnte Räume zu vermessen.

Die Arithmetik hat uns, dank Peano und seinem ersten Axiom, zu verstehen gegeben, dass auch die Null eine Zahl ist und hat damit unseren geistigen Horizont entschieden erweitert.

Galileo und Newton haben uns gelehrt, dass die Erde nicht flach ist und die Sonne nicht um sie herum kreist; dass auf den Polen der Mensch nicht mit dem Kopf nach unten spaziert. Die Chemie hat die Zusammensetzung der Materie erhellt und die Physik ihr Verhalten beschrieben.

Die einzige „Disziplin“, die uns nie etwas gelehrt hat, ist die Geschichte. Seitdem die Welt existiert, hat die Menschheit die Fehler der Vergangenheit in fast obsessiver Manier wiederholt. Wir sehen zerstörte Städte, massakrierte Völker, bombardierte Brücken. Im Falle von Percha jedoch, war das Resultat nicht gänzlich Zerstörung. Vielleicht aber das nächste Mal, wenn die neue Brücke zum Ziel wird. Vielleicht ist es aber auch so, dass das Vergolden der Geschichte in künstlerischer Form die Menschen etwas lehrt, um die Fehler der Vergangenheit zu vermeiden. Das ist die Botschaft, die uns Zingerle durch seine goldene Installation vermittelt: Auch die Geschichte kann Lehrmeisterin sein, wenn sie ästhetisch versüßt wird.

Und das, wir wissen es bereits, ist die Aufgabe der Kunst: Unser Leben zu versüßen und uns zum Nachsinnen zu bringen. Einen Dank an Wolfgang Zingerle, der uns daran erinnert.

anybody is history. As long as anyone can remember, mankind has always repeated, in a clearly obsessive manner, the same mistakes made in the past. We see yet again devastated cities, massacred people and bombed bridges. At least sometimes, as is the case with Percha, there is a result.

Perhaps people, by gilding history in an artistic way, will finally learn something and avoid the mistakes of the past. This is the message that Wolfgang Zingerle wants to convey with his gilded installation: that even history can teach us something, if aesthetically softened.

Moreover, and as we already know, this is in fact the assignment of art: to soften up life and to make us contemplate.

Hats off to Wolfgang Zingerle, who is always keen to remind us of this.

Un testimone monitorio La geometria, fin dai tempi di Euclide ci ha insegnato a misurare spazi ridotti, spazi “a misura d’uomo”.

Più tardi, con Bolyai e Lobatschewskij e Riemann, a misurare spazi più vasti. L’aritmetica, grazie a Peano ed al suo primo assioma, ci ha fatto capire che persino zero è un numero, ampliando in questo modo i nostri orrizzonti mentali.

Galileo e Newton ci hanno spiegato che la terra non è piatta e che il sole non le gira intorno e che agli antipodi la gente non cammina a testa in giù. La chimica ci ha chiarito la composizione della materia e la fisica ce ne ha descritto il comportamento.

L’unica “disciplina”, che non ha mai insegnato nulla a nessuno è la storia. Da quando mondo è mondo l’umanità ha sempre ripetuto, in maniera certo ossessiva, gli stessi errori commessi nel passato. Vediamo città devastate, popoli massacrati, ponti bombardati, anche se non sempre, come nel caso di Perca, c’è stato un risultato. Ma forse la prossima volta andrà meglio un futuro bombardamento con il nuovo ponte.

Ma forse, indorando la storia in forma artistica, la gente se ne lascerà insegnare qualche cosa, evitando in tal modo gli errori del passato. È questo il messaggio che Wolfgang Zingerle ci vuole trasmettere con questa sua dorata installazione: anche la storia può diventarci maestra, se esteticamente addolcita.

Del resto, già lo sappiamo, è proprio questo il compito dell’arte: di addolcirci la vita e di farci meditare.

Im Ambiente der Berengo Studios von Murano, einem der innovativsten im Zusammenhang mit zeitgenössischer Kunst aus Glas, hat der Künstler Wolfgang Zingerle eine natürliche Synergie mit dem Material geschaffen; es ist ihm gelungen, mit dem Material Glas Gedanken, die sich in Farben und Formen ausdrücken, zu reflektieren.

Die Erfahrung der Malerei, transformiert in Glas, erschafft pure Vibrationen aus Farbe, die sich mit Licht füllen. So definiert Adriano Berengo den Künstler als „großen Koloristen, der imstande ist, die Materie so zu gestalten, dass sie über das figurative Schema hinausreicht. Dies erreicht er durch die Verwendung von Glas als reine Farbe.“

Die Form erscheint, dank der ihr verliehenen Bewegung, dynamisch und frei. Vor allem diese Dynamik ist es, die die gläsernen Figuren von Zingerle zu raren und preziösen Objekten macht. Die Bewegung entstammt auch der Aneignung aller das Objekt umgebender Energien vom Moment der Konzeption bis hin zur Realisation: Die Farbe, die Anwendung mathematischer Aspekte, die Entwicklungsstufen, die Dynamik und physische sowie mentale Energie des Glasmeisters interagieren mit der Kreativität des Künstlers, der das Objekt und seine Materialität in ein Kunstwerk verwandelt.

Rigide Konstruktionsschemen genauso vermeidend wie sich von rigiden Schemen der Ausführung lösend, erreicht er seine Darstellung des Werks ohne sich von traditionellen, konstruktiven Überschreitungen abhängig zu machen und schafft es so, die Distanz, die das fertige Objekt von der Zeichnung trennt, zu überbrücken.

Wolfgang Zingerle is one of the most innovative artists at Studio Berengo in Murano when it comes to expressing contemporary artistic positions through the medium of glass. Zingerle has found a natural synergy with matter, able to let the material reflect a thought, expressed through colour and form.

The experience of painting, transferred to glass, produces pure colour vibrations that charge themselves with light. Adriano Berengo himself defines the artist as “a great colour painter able to mould matter and to exceed the figurative scheme, by using glass as pure colour.”

The form manifests itself as dynamic and free, thanks to the movement conferred to it. This sense of dynamism is what makes the glass sculptures of Zingerle even more unique and precious, as it derives from the absorption

of surrounding energies, from the moment of conception to the eventual realization: the colour, the application of mathematical aspects, the parable, the dynamism, the physical and mental energy of the artist all interact with the sense of creativity that is able to transform the object and its materiality into art.

FORME IN DI V ENIRE Nel contesto dello Studio Berengo di Murano, uno dei più innovativi nell’esprimere le istanze artistiche della contemporaneità tramite il vetro, l’artista Wolfgang Zingerle ha trovato una naturale sinergia con la materia riuscendo a farle riflettere un pensiero che si esprime in colori e forme.

L’esperienza della pittura, trasferita nel vetro, produce vibrazioni pure di colore che si caricano di luce. Lo stesso Adriano Berengo lo definisce “un grande colorista in grado di plasmare la materia e andare oltre lo schema figurativo, utilizzando il vetro come colore puro”.

La forma si manifesta dinamica e libera grazie al movimento conferitole. La dinamicità è ciò che rende le sculture vitree di Zingerle ancor più rare e preziose poiché deriva dall’assorbimento delle energie circostanti, dal momento del concepimento alla realizzazione. Il colore, l’applicazione di aspetti matematici e geometrici, come la parabola, l’energia fisica e mentale del maestro interagiscono con la creatività dell’artista che riesce a trasformare l’oggetto e la sua materialità in opera d’arte.

Evitando sistemi di costruzione rigidi e sviando schemi esecutivi, egli giunge alla rappresentazione dell’opera senza farsi condizionare da passaggi costruttivi tradizionali così da colmare la distanza che divide il pezzo finito dal disegno esecutivo.

Warum gerade Glas? „Mir wurde klar, dass Glas wie flüssige Farbe verwendet werden kann, das war eine Offenbarung“ sagt Zingerle, der fasziniert ist von der Wiederentdeckung produktiver Prozesse und von allem, was Technik ist, gepaart mit der absoluten Freiheit der Kreativität. Er selbst definiert sich als ein Techniker, unterstreicht aber: „Wenn wir etwas „Schönes“ erlangen, ist es deshalb, weil wir Künstler die Fähigkeit haben, pure Kreation zu nutzen. Auch wenn es abgedroschen klingt, dies ist fundamental.“

Die sich im Werden befindlichen Formen von Zingerle schließen das Thema des Experiments mit ein, das eine Charakteristik im Schaffen des Künstlers darstellt. Der Prozess der Transformation vom Glas hin zum flüssigen Zustand scheint gefroren: Die Metamorphose von Farbe hin zu Substanz ist unvorhersehbar, die Skulptur wählt selbst ob sie nun pflanzlich, tierisch oder menschlich wird… der Betrachter wartet auf das Ergebnis eines Experiments.

Fasziniert auch vom philosophischen Hintergrund der Arbeiten Jan Fabres, spiegeln die Werke Wolfgang Zingerles eine starke Spiritualität wider; sie stehen in Verbindung mit der Realität, mit der Erde, sie sind nahe bei uns und schöpfen aus der Energie die der Skulptur selbst innewohnt.

Es überwiegt das ästhetische Ziel: Sich von politischen, sozialen und örtlichen Konditionen lösend, strebt Zingerle hin zu einer universellen Botschaft der Schönheit, die, um verstanden zu werden, nicht nach Rationalität, sondern nach großer Sensibilität verlangt.

La trasformazione che subisce il vetro allo stato fluido è come congelata nel suo processo in fieri: la metamorfosi che da colore si fa sostanza potrebbe essere quindi imprevedibile, la scultura sceglierà se divenire vegetale, animale o umana… lo spettatore si trova in attesa del risultato di un esperimento.

Affascinato dal senso filosofico delle opere di Jan Fabre, riflette una forte spiritualità nelle sue sculture che sono comunque legate alla realtà, a questa terra, sono vicine a noi e si caricano di tutta l’energia circostante che fa parte della scultura stessa.

Il fine estetico è prevalente e predominante: slegandosi da connotazioni politiche, sociali e di luogo, Wolfgang Zingerle mira ad un messaggio universale che comunichi bellezza senza richiedere comprensione razionale, ma grande sensibilità.

The hand, as the most important symbolic representation of the human being and therefore a common allegory for evolution and development, is the basic motif of this installation held at the Vocational School in Bruneck.

Thus, the hands of children, adolescents and adults have been, so to speak, “frozen“ for the work — special procedures and the material utilized have enabled the artist to render exactly and with no parting line each subtle variation of the skin’s surface.

On three polished and circular stainless steel plates, the visitor recognizes in the hands, made from transparent synthetic resin as well as silvered and gilded bronze, the three stages of development: childhood, youth and adulthood. Reflection on the objects turns the perception of the corporeal into an event, which then leads to discernment and to physical thought.

Die Hand, das wohl wichtigste körperliche Abbild des Menschen, Sinnbild für Evolution und Entwicklung, ist das Grundmotiv der Installation an der Landesberufsschule in Bruneck. Die Hände von Kindern, Jugendlichen und Erwachsenen wurden für das Kunstwerk sozusagen „eingefroren“ — spezielle Verfahren und die verwendeten Materialien ermöglichten es, ohne Trennfuge jede Feinheit der Hautoberfläche exakt wiederzugeben.

Auf drei polierten, kreisförmigen Edelstahlplatten erkennt der Besucher in den Händen, realisiert in transparenten Kunstharz, vergoldeter und versilberter Bronze, drei Stadien der Entwicklung: Kindheit, Jugend und Alter. Die Spiegelung der Objekte macht die Wahrnehmung des Leiblichen zum Ereignis, das zur Einsicht und zu einem leiblichen Denken führt.

Hier wird die alte Idee des Gegensatzes von Geist und Materie durchbrochen, die Aufspaltung aufgehoben; man kann sich mit dem Mysterium aussöhnen, dass die Seele das innerlich angeschaute Leben des Körpers und der Körper das äußerlich offenbarte Leben der Seele ist.

Dass die beiden nicht zwei, sondern eins sind. Der Körper wird Schauplatz einer zarten Regie. Die Kunst wird mit Körperlichkeit verbunden und kulminiert in einer Neuerfindung, geschaffen aus verschiedenen Materialien, in der sich eine antike Matrize ausstreut.

Man tauft den Körper um die Seele zu taufen. Aber wer kann sagen, was Seele ist? Vielleicht niemand so klar und körperlich wie diese Installation. Dort begegnet man ihr.

Here, the old notion of the opposition of the spiritual and material is discarded, the rupture suspended; it is possible to reconcile with the mysterious; to conceive of the soul as the existence of the body perceived from the inside, and the body as the externally revealed existence of the soul; to think that they are in fact not two but one. Here, the body becomes the venue of a tender mise-en-scène. The work of art becomes associated with corporeality and culminates in a new invention, created from different materials, in which an ancient matrix becomes disseminated — i.e. that the body is baptized in order to redeem the soul. But who can tell what in fact the soul is? Perhaps nobody has presented it so clearly and physically as in this installation.

There, one will meet it.

La mano, in quanto rappresentazione simbolica e al contempo fisica più importante dell’essere umano, allegoria dell’evoluzione e dello sviluppo, è il motivo base dell’installazione nella scuola professionale di Brunico.

Per l’opera d’arte sono state per così dire “congelate” le mani di bambini, giovani e adulti. I materiali utilizzati e i particolari processi impiegati hanno permesso all’artista di restituire con esattezza e senza fratture ogni particolare della pelle. I visitatori si trovano davanti a mani realizzate in resina artificiale trasparente, in bronzo d’orato e bronzo argentato poste su tre lucide piastre circolari d’acciaio inossidabile, nelle quali si riconoscono i tre stadi della crescita: infanzia, giovinezza e vecchiaia. La riflessione degli oggetti rende la percezione del corpo un evento che a sua volta diviene comprensione e pensiero corporeo.

Qui viene superata la vecchia nozione dell’opposizione tra spirito e materia, mentre questa scissione viene sospesa; è possibile conciliarsi con il mistero; pensare che l’anima sia la vita del corpo percepito dall’interno e che il corpo sia la vita dell’anima rivelata all’esterno; che queste due espressioni vitali siano in effetti una sola.

Qui, il corpo diventa il palcoscenico di un’aggraziata regia. L’arte viene annessa alla corporalità facendosi invenzione creata con diversi materiali.

In essa però si esplicita una matrice antica che consiste nel battezzare il corpo per battezzare l’anima.

Ma chi può dire che cosa sia l’anima? Forse niente esprime ciò così chiaramente e con tale fisicità come questa installazione. Qui la si trova.

Wolfgang Zingerle Wir stehen vor einer großen gelben Leinwand, schwerfällig in ihrer Materialität, die an alte, fast vergessene Techniken erinnert, an Inifintesimal-Rechnungen von nicht wiederholbaren Momenten voller Gleichgewicht.

Dieselbe Philosophie wie in Myrons Discobolos: Den Augenblick präzise festhalten, und wenn er von noch so kurzer Dauer ist. Unmittelbar vor dem Big Bang, dem Urknall. Die Materie verdichtet sich bis hin zum Limit, während der Ausbruch beginnt.

Raum und Zeit in Harmonie: Die vier Dimensionen von Albert Einstein. In anderen Gemälden nehmen wir andere Momente, die eigentlich keine Momente sind, wahr: Es sind Millionen über Millionen von Lichtjahren.

Es handelt sich um Raum- und Zeitmaße, deren Zahlen mithilfe 10ⁿ ausgedrückt werden. Doch die Farbe kann die Zeit und den Raum ausdrücken, sie kann eine Skulptur daraus schaffen. Sicher ist es nicht einfach, Zeit und Raum zu meißeln, genauso wie es schwierig ist, Werke zu schaffen, die den Wind einfangen. Doch den Wind gibt es hier nicht und unter dem Titel Calma apparente bricht die vom Big Bang ausgelöste Bewegung durch.

Es überkommt uns beklemmender Zweifel: Können wir auf das dritte Prinzip der Thermodynamik vertrauen, der Unendlichkeit von Raum und Zeit und also der Materie, oder müssen wir mit dem zweiten Prinzip rechnen, der Zunahme der Entropie, die auf das Ende der Welt, des Universums, der Universen, verweist?

Wir könnten Wolfgang Zingerle fragen, doch wir ahnen, dass auch er uns keine Antwort geben kann.

Schließlich ist er Künstler und kein Astrophysiker.

There is a large-format yellow canvas, heavy in its material dimension, that seems to recall ancient, almost forgotten techniques regarding infinitesimal calculations of unrepeatable moments of balance; a philosophy close to that of Myron’s discusthrower: taking a photograph of a precise and fleeting instant!

The immediate moment prior to the Big Bang, the explosion at the origin of the universe. The matter has been condensed, pushed towards the margins, as the deflagration begins.

Space and time are in harmonious accordance: the four dimensions of Albert Einstein.

Within the other canvas we discern other moments, which are not instants but millions and millions of light years. It is all about spatial and temporal dimensions, the numbers expressing themselves followed by 10n, because it is not possible to write them down otherwise.

Colour knows how to express time and space. It knows how to make a sculpture out of this. It is certainly not easy to sculpt space and time, and it may be as difficult as the art of sculpturing the wind. Here, there is no wind, and in the midst of an apparent quiescence (Calma apparente) we can perceive the movement provoked by the Big Bang.

We are assaulted by an anxious doubt: can trust be the third principle of thermodynamics, the infinity of space and time and thus of matter, or

Wolfgang Zingerle C’è una grande tela gialla, pesantemente materica, che fa venire tecniche antiche, quasi scordate, di calcoli infinitesimali di momenti d’equilibrio irripetibili. La stessa filosofia di Mirone, nel discobolo: fotografare l’istante preciso, e quanto breve! Immediatamente precedente il big bang, la deflagrazione (detonazione, esplosione, conflagrazione) ai primordi (alba infanzia inizio) dell’universo. La materia si è addensata verso il margine, mentre inizia la deflagrazione.

Spazio e tempo in armonico accordo: le quattro dimensioni di Albert Einstein. Nelle altre tele avvertiamo altri istanti, che istanti non sono: son milioni e milioni di anni luce. Si tratta di misure, spaziali e temporali, i cui numeri si esprimono seguiti da un 10n, perché non é possibile scriverli quali sono. Ed il colore sa esprimere il tempo e lo spazio, ne sa fare una scultura. E certo non è semplice scolpire lo spazio ed il tempo, come altrettanto è difficile quell’arte che ci sa scolpire il vento. Ma il vento qui non c’è, e sotto una Calma apparente avvertiamo il movimento provocato dal big bang.

E siamo assaliti da un dubbio angosciante: possiamo noi confidare nel terzo principio della termodinamica, l’infinità dello spazio e del tempo, e quindi della materia, o ci troviamo a dover fare conti con il secondo principio, l’aumento dell’entropia che conduce alla fine del mondo, dell’universo, degli universi?

Dovremmo chiedere a Wolfgang Zingerle, ma pure lui, siamo convinti, non é in grado di darci risposte.

Wolfgang Zingerle è un artista, non è un astrofisico.
