THE HEART OF THE HOME, ONCE AGAIN

ook back to the cookery shows of the late 1990s and early 2000s and you can see exactly where our kitchen inspiration came from the anodyne, sleek, chrome-clad kitchens of professional chefs such as Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver and Heston Blumenthal.

All of a sudden the warm, cosy kitchens of our parents, the kind of kitchen which Grand Dame of home cookery Delia Smith would have prepared a roast chicken dinner in - wooden cabinets, tiled floors and floral curtains - were out. Instead, we were pouring concrete, installing stainless steel ranges and finding new and ingenious ways to open cupboards without using anything as unsightly as handles. The home kitchen became as close to the galley of a top London restaurant’s backroom as it was possible to get: a functional space in which to create corden-bleu spagbol and show off our collection of vintage Burgandies in the sleek built-in wine rack. But unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past few years you can’t have failed to notice a change. Yes, many of us are still looking to Poggenpohl and Tecnocucina for sleek lines and white, white, white, but even more are putting the heart back in to the kitchen. It’s been happening for a while. Cath Kidston and Emma Bridgewater have been tempting us with spotty egg cups and cutesy 1950s inspired cutlery, Nigella Lawson has been extolling

the virtues of her Kitchen Aid mixer as she licks yet another mixing bowl clean and Nigel Slater has made the move from print to television, picking ingredients from his allotment garden to make cosy suppers in his homely TV kitchen which might have the limited colour palette of the 1990s cookery show kitchen but which exudes welcoming warmth with bare wood and earth tones. It’s a fair bet to make that even Heston Blumenthal might have been swayed to adding a little splash of colour back at his home where nobody can see it. Once again an Aga is the top of the kitchen wishlist. In every colour going it’s almost a shame not to buy one in bright red or retro yellow - even Ms Bridgewater has designed one in her trademark country kitchen-esque primary colour spot. A cast iron range is undoubtedly the central feature in any family kitchen worth its salt, but if you can’t afford one (and they are ludicrously expensive) adding heartfelt character to your kitchen is simple. Patterns such as spots, stripes, hearts and stars are cute and colourful whether on crockery, cutlery or just your tea towels. Attaching a devil-may-care attitude to tidiness is a must too, within reason, open shelving filled with colourful bits and bobs, pretty bottles, cookbooks and retro finds look great while hanging your utensils above the stove or even pans from a ceiling rack has an olde worlde vibe and makes everything easy to find. There are endless ways to bring your kitchen in to the 2010s but the most important thing is to make it a living space once again.

Tile with Style York Ltd

arren and Caren Emmerson formed Tile with Style York Ltd in May 2003. Having been in the tile industry for 11 years Darren felt he had a lot more to offer. After much deliberation and looking for premises he opened his showroom on Shipton Road York. Darren told P&P “This was a stressful time, Caren and I put our lives on hold and everything into our new venture, but we knew if we concentrated on customer satisfaction it may take time, but the business would hopefully flourish”. The next 5 years saw Tile with Style grow from strength to strength with word of mouth spreading and a customer base producing regular repeat business. Darren went on to say “We have had some worrying times in 2008 the recession hit resulting in a lot of businesses closing their doors, but through hard work and sheer determination we saw our customer base continue to grow which helped pull us through some a very tough period”. 15 years on Tile with Style prides itself on being a family run business with Jake, Darren and Caren’s eldest son joining the business from leaving school. Andrew Darren’s cousin oversees the warehouse and every now and again is let loose in the delivery van, Darren smiled and said, “We also have Richard who was a regular customer here being a tiler himself joined the team 5 years ago”. Darren’s focus is making sure that every customer visiting the showroom feels welcome and is given all the help they may need when choosing tiles and materials for their project. Caren told P&P “Darren works tirelessly to ensure that the showroom is kept up to date with the latest new tiles and designs giving our customers plenty of choice. He imports from the best factories in Europe with most ranges kept in stock at our holding warehouse in Poppleton”. When you enter the showroom you see the array of tile ranges on offer they have, ceramic, porcelain, mosaic and natural stone for walls and floors, Darren explained “We have both large and small 6 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE

format to suit any job but we have noticed that patterned floor tiles are becoming very popular for walls too”. Every project requires other elements such as Adhesives, grouts, silicones and trims of which we offer some of the best available giving our customer a huge range of colours to match their choice of tile. We also like to offer customers free delivery in the local area. Tile with Style also has a clearance warehouse next to the showroom on Shipton Road, Darren told P&P “The clearance warehouse allows me to sell discontinued lines at less than half price which helps people to keep the cost down. If you are working on a tight budget there is always a great deal to be had with some prices as low as £2.50 + VAT per square metre”. There is currently Carrara Brick Marble on offer now for a fantastic low price of only £14.95 per metre + VAT. The main showroom always carries an abundance of offers to suit all our customers’ needs so it is worth popping in before you start any project. ENGLAND’S CITY BREAK GEMS Planning a short city break usually involves a look at foreign destinations served by low cost air carriers, which is strange when you consider the number of cities England boosts that are more than worthy of spending a day or two exploring.

BATH: The entire city has been designated a World Heritage Site and features the world-famous baths and temple, remarkably preserved. Complete with their 2,000-year-old plumbing, the hot water spring still flows through the remains.

Be a little patriotic this year and organise a city break in one of England’s famous city centres. Here are six of our greatest, according to Enjoy England (www.enjoyengland.com).

CHESTER: This Roman heritage city boasts the most complete city walls of any British city; Eastgate Clock, the most photographed clock in the world after Big Ben; and the largest stone-built Roman amphitheatre in the UK.

LONDON: Our capital is a huge melting pot of 500,000 years of history and modern culture. You can follow the well-trodden tourist paths to shopping heaven, ancient historic sites, world renowned galleries and museums, West End theatres and celeb hang outs. YORK: Few British cities offer such magical charm and beauty. Outstanding architecture and 2,000 years of history combine with quaint shopping streets. Its number one attraction is beautiful York Minister. MANCHESTER: From its proud industrial heritage to its newfound fame as a centre of class-leading sports facilities, Manchester is regarded as Britain’s coolest modern city. Visit the Museum of Science and Industry, The Lowry gallery or Manchester United’s home ground.

STRATFORD-UPON-AVON: Shakespeare’s home town offers a customary blend of heritage and drama. You can visit Shakespeare’s birth place, take in a show at the Royal Shakespeare Company Theatre, The Swan Theatre or The Waterside Theatre, take a boat trip down Shakespeare’s “sweet Avon” or explore the city’s many preserved Tudor buildings.

SHINING A LIGHT ON WOMEN’S SHOPPING SECRETS reciting their justifications aloud to themselves, ready for a grilling on their purchases. The researchers also found that half the women questioned confessed to hiding their buys and on average have stashed three big purchases in the last six months to avoid being caught out on their spending habits. The bottom of the wardrobe was the most popular hiding place, although four in 10 use a drawer they know their partner will never look in. A fifth of shopaholics stash their guilty buys under the bed, while kitchen cupboards and the bathroom were also popular spots. More than a quarter of women admit to lying to their partner’s face about their bills, while the fibs stretch to parents, friends and other family for a sneaky 30%. A bare-faced one in five said they’ve worn a brand new item and pretended it was old while 20% buy clothes and accessories in the supermarket because they know their partners will think the cash was spent on food. And a manipulative one in 10 make sure they buy their partner a present when shopping, purely to soften him up so they can spend more on themselves.

T

he deceitful depths to which women stoop to conceal their spending from their partners have been laid bare in a new study.

Excuses, secretly stashing away purchases and downright lies are a regular ritual for a shocking amount of women throughout the UK. Researchers quizzed 2,000 women and found two thirds of them relied on excuses to feel better about spending money on themselves. “I haven’t bought anything for ages” and “I deserve this” are the most popular pleas trotted out by women after a shopping spree, while a third use a pre-prepared list to justify their spending to their partners - “It’s a bargain”, “I need this to cheer me up” and “It was on sale” completing the top five. The research, commissioned by money-saving website LoveFashionSales.com, found “I’ll get my money’s worth’” or “I really need this” were regularly used, while many are convinced they have nothing to wear. “I’ve wanted one for ages” and “I’ll wear it all the time” rounded off the top 10 excuses for shoppers - a third of whom admitted to

16 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE

Three quarters genuinely believe in the power of retail therapy, with the buzz of a bargain proving the strongest high - 70% say they love saving money on new clothes, while half feel justified buying something if they can get it at a discount. Almost 50% say internet shopping, with payment taken at the touch of a button, doesn’t feel like spending. A third told researchers they don’t feel as guilty about shopping online and find it the best way to bag a bargain. Interestingly the research revealed that when it comes to indulging themselves, women prefer to spend money on clothes, shoes and handbags instead of holidays, spa treatments, hair appointments or food. Company founder Rob Gorton says: “It’s amusing to think of women hiding their purchases and the lengths they will go to avoid being confronted on their spending. “Finding something at a bargain price while still getting that new purchase feeling is the best way to ensure women get the treats they work hard to afford, without having to break the bank. “Many women pride themselves on their ability to know a bargain when they see one and in these tougher financial times it’s more important than ever to know where to look.”

HOBBIES KEEP WORK-LIFE BALANCE IN CHECK CAVE CASTLE HOTEL & COUNTRY CLUB

S

cheduled as a building of historical and architectural interest the precise date of Cave Castle cannot be accurately established, although from the thickness of the walls and the structure of the foundation together with the subsequent discovery of an underground passage from the castle to the church it would appear that it is certainly of ‘ancient origin’.

W

e’ve all heard the old adage “all work and no play make Jack a dull boy”, which is why so many of us take up a hobby. However, with less free time to spend on hobbies and more time spent in the office, it seems Britain’s work-life balance has fallen seriously out of kilter.

There are references to the manor of South Cave in the Domesday Book dating it back to the 11th century although little is known of the appearance of the original medieval buildings. The landowners listed were the Archbishop of York and Earl Hugh but the manor along with the townships of Broomfleet and Flaxfleet were granted to Robert Mallet by William the Conqueror. In a Charter dated 1314 the estate had passed to the Deyvill family and then to Sir Thomas Danby of Leeds with whose family it remained until the 17th century.

If you find yourself too tired to go to that yoga class you’ve been meaning to join or long office hours prevent you from indulging in after-work activities, you are not alone.

It is said that John Washington the Great Grandfather of George Washington (first President of the United States) lived in the Cave Castle Estate prior to immigrating to America (1631-1677.)

The independently commissioned survey delves into perceptions regarding the UK’s work-life balance and the amount of time and money the British public invests in a hobby or pastime.

It was under the ownership of the Boldero Barnard family who purchased the manor in 1748 that the most significant alterations were made. Between 1791 and 1804 the house was largely re-built in a Gothic style and the parkland re-designed to create a large fishpond (the current lake) created near the medieval well of St Helen. The appearance of the building today owes much to the renovations carried out after a serious fire in 1875 which destroyed the west wing of the house.

Unsurprisingly, due to increased office hours, the study shows that the British don’t have enough time to do the things they enjoy doing - with 87 per cent wishing they had more free time for a hobby or pastime. Only five per cent said they have ample free time to themselves.

The estate passed out of the Barnard family in the early 20th century when it was purchased by Mr J W Carmichael who modernised and reduced the size of the castle, saving it from dereliction after it lay empty between 1925-938. Towards the end of the Second World War Cave Castle became a headquarters and officers’ mess and was sold again before it became a hotel. Very little is known of the original building but the cellars and an escape tunnel linking to South Cave Church date back from before 1791 when Henry Hakewill, architect was commissioned to renovate and extend the East Hall, which by then was known locally as Cave Castle. In recent years Cave Castle has seen further refurbishment and extensions, growing significantly in size from a 25-bedroom hotel with a new golf course in the early 1990’s. Two further bedroom wings have been added creating a total of 71 bedrooms, the excellent 18-hole course is maturing year on year and a state of the art Health Club & Spa now make it a unique contender in the hotel and leisure market. The delightful setting makes it a speciality wedding venue and the extensive facilities available are suitable for every type of corporate and private event. Our Windsor Restaurant gives a truly exceptional dining experience whilst the Courtyard Bistro offers a more modern and contemporary choice of menu. All in all an experience not to be missed ..... ! 18 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE

As many as nine out of 10 of us would like more free time to spend on our hobbies, according to a study by leisure information website realbuzz.com.

Pastimes play such a vital part in our lives, helping us to reduce stress, keep fit and meet new friends, that its hardly surprising we are beginning to harbour some resentment toward increased office hours. More than half of us believe work severely gets in the way of our social life at least once a week, while an additional quarter of the UK workforce think their career impacts on their hobbies at least twice a week. Cumulatively this shows that more than three-quarters of us feel that work has a noticeable, and ultimately negative, impact on the enjoyment of their free time. Work hours are not only curbing our free time but they are now curbing our spending on hobbies too. When asked how much money people spend on a hobby or pastime the results showed that 38 per cent - slightly more than one in three of us - do not actually spend any money on their hobby or pastime. This has triggered a resurgence of free pastimes such as, walking, cycling, reading and jogging and now more of us are beginning to indulge in a more physical pastime. Work is also impacting our choice of hobby, as one in four of us finds colleagues far more motivational than our own family and friends particularly in terms of getting us to do a more physically challenging activity. Going to the gym, walking and running are some of the more physical hobbies we are most likely to start because of our workmates. This growing level of resentment toward work from hobby-loving Britons surprises Fiona Gibbins, marketing director of realbuzz.com. “Our research has thrown up some interesting findings,” she says. “It’s staggering to see how strongly the British public feels about work impacting on their free time and ultimately getting in the way of them enjoying a pastime.”

SHOOTING SO, DO YOU THINK OF SHOOTING AS A SPORT?

W

Written by Sam Berridge ell many people don’t realise or choose the under subscribed discipline when looking for something to do on a weekend or when fancying a new challenge.

Shooting has been in the Olympics since 1896 and has historically been a taboo subject for various reasons, especially with parents getting their young prodigies into the sport. Shooting is in fact one of the safest sports with injury being 105 times more likely playing football. Surprising I know but why is this sport so safe. Well most reputable target shooting clubs now have robust safety procedures to follow. Speaking to Wolds Shooting Club, they told People & Places that for all new members, children and adults alike they run an accredited safety course where shooters are put through a series of tests before they are deemed competent to shoot. Not only this but one to one teaching and supervision is offered, they even go to the extent of offering a robust first aid course ran by a Paramedic. What governs the sport in the UK you may ask? Well there are a couple of organisations, these being the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the National Small bore rifle association. They ensure clubs are operating to the required standards both in safety and competence. With qualified NRA instructors and range officers scattered around clubs in the UK it makes it one of the safest sports there is. The type of shooting you can try your hand at varies greatly from

‘...if you fancy trying your hand at a new sport or fancy a challenge, shooting may just be right for you.’ disciplines suitable for a complete novice to expert marksmen. As a rule of thumb, to access this exclusive and exciting world you only need be a member of an accredited club and they will take care of the rest. Speaking to Wolds shooting club who operate from Cottondale shooting ground, they told us they regularly run trips to Scotland to shoot at a very exclusive 2-mile range. Not only this but trips to Europe to shoot different firearms and inter club competitions are all things you can be a part of for as little as £35 a year. In addition to the wild and wonderful opportunities you get from being a club member, you can even go on to apply to hold a firearm’s license yourself. The club says as a member, subject to the required police checks of course, you have access to shoot a range of firearms big and small in a safe and controlled environment. So, if you fancy trying your hand at a new sport or fancy a challenge, shooting may just be right for you. SEPTEMBER 2019 | 19

ood posture is about more than standing up straight so you can look your best. It is an important part of your long-term health. Making sure that you hold your body the right way, whether you are moving or still, can prevent pain, injuries, and other health problems.

WHAT IS POSTURE? Posture is how you hold your body. The key to good posture is the position of your spine. Your spine has three natural curves - at your neck, mid back, and low back. Correct posture should maintain these curves, but not increase them.

HOW CAN POSTURE AFFECT MY HEALTH? Poor posture can be bad for your health. Slouching or slumping over can: • Misalign your musculoskeletal system • Wear away at your spine, making it more fragile and prone to injury • Cause neck, shoulder, and back pain • Decrease your flexibility • Affect how well your joints move • Affect your balance and increase your risk of falling • Make it harder to digest your food • Make it harder to breathe Your body becomes used to the posture it adopts. But this doesn’t make your bad posture ok. Typical examples of poor posture include, Forward Head Posture, (‘text neck’) and rounded shoulders, which I find with people who spend a lot of time at a desk or drive for a living. These postures frequently lead to muscle imbalance.

Looking from the side, a plumb line hung from the top of your head, should pass through your ear and stay in line with the middle of your shoulder, your elbow, middle of your pelvis, slightly to the front of your knee and down to the front of your heel. Standing with your back to a wall, your head should be near the wall or touching when you look straight ahead. Your shoulders should rest near the wall with your thumbs pointing forward. You should have a small arch in your lower back with your bottom touching the wall.

HOW DO YOU HELP CORRECT POOR POSTURE? Drivers: Assuming your seat is in the correct position; make sure your shoulder blades are touching the chair and the back of your head is touching the head rest (avoid text neck). Desk workers: At least every 45 minutes, stand up, draw your shoulder blades together then pull them down, as though you’re trying to put them in your back pockets, do this at least 4 or 5 times. Above all, make sure your workspace is ergonomically set up.

EYELASH EXTENSIONS FOR BEGINNERS EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW! Written by Catherine McClure

W

ho wouldn’t want to have gorgeous long thick eyelashes without using coats of mascara. If you would like to wake up with full long dark eyelashes then eyelash extensions could be for you.

Before you rush out to book a appointment here are a few things you need to educate yourself on. EYELASH EXTENSIONS ARE NOT THE SAME AS FALSE EYELASHES. Unlike gluing a strip of temporary fake eyelashes to your lash line, that can take time and skill and so often after all the effort can still end up falling off in the middle of your night out. Semi permanent lashes are applied by a skilled beauty technician who will glue individual lashes on top of your natural lashes. The glue that is used has been specially formulated so that it does not damage or irritate your eyes. The process of having semi permanent lashes applied is very intricate and labour intensive, in general it takes 90 – 120 minutes to complete a full set. After the initial application you need to factor in time for the glue to dry and fully set. Typically this can take 12-24 hours, depending on the glue used.

Synthetic lash extensions will last the same amount of time as a full growth cycle of real lashes, meaning your lashes will last roughly between 6 to 8 weeks. However you have to bare in mind that the lash circle can vary, light work may be done every 3 to 4 weeks if necessary. You can ensure that you get the most out of your lashes by.. Brush your lashes regularly , don’t be nervous about doing this, it is good practice to brush them morning and night. Sleep on your back. This might be a tall order for some of you but if you really want to get the most out of your lashes you need to avoid sleeping in anyway that your face is laid on a pillow or sheet. Top them up regularly. Even if you are incredibly careful with your lashes, some of them will fallout overtime. Ensure you keep up your glamorous look by making regular appointments for infill. Lastly do your research and get your lashes from a reputable salon with good reviews, remember you get what you pay for, cheap lashes may result in either poorly applied lashes or worse still infected lashes. Another warning, once you start you will find it hard to stop.

CAN WE HAVE HEALTH WITHOUT MENTAL HEALTH? By Karen Hayward

T

here are different ways of defining mental health and, in many ways, it can be said that there is no health without mental health. The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines health as ‘…a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’. WHO also said ‘Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community’.

Karen Hayward is a Mental Health First Aid Instructor with MHFA England and also runs private therapy clinics in Ryedale, specialising in traumabased anxiety www.karenhayward.co.uk

It is estimated that there are 676 million people worldwide affected by mental health issues. 676 million! That’s a huge number of people that are suffering, often in silence. The actual figure could be higher than this. The reason? People often delay getting the help they need due to the stigma and discrimination often associated with poor mental health or, help is not always readily available to them. They may also not realise that their mental health has declined so might not seek help until someone close to them suggests it. As a society, we tend to view people with mental illness as weak or dangerous, selfish or malingering, but this is not the case. If we take a person with anxiety as an example and look at some symptoms; palpitations, chest pain, dizziness, headache, sweating, nausea, diarrhoea, muscles aches and pains, excessive fear or worry, difficulty making decisions. The list goes on and on. They are not weak or lazy. Every day is a struggle, a battle to get through. We have a wide range of negative words and phrases available to us to describe someone with mental ill health but almost no positive words. By talking about mental ill health, being open about how we are feeling and reducing or eliminating the stigma, we can facilitate earlier interventions and help those that need it most. Study after study has shown that the earlier someone receives help, the more likelihood there is of a positive, successful outcome. Over the next few months, I will be discussing a range of mental health conditions and giving you hints and tips on how you can help to improve your own mental health and the mental health of those around you. Until next time, wishing you good mental health. Karen

CHEMO2CARDIO MY ROAD TO IRONMAN AND BEYOND

I

By Eddy Clarkson

magine being 20 years old and finding out you have leukaemia. This was the reality I was faced with when I was diagnosed with AML (Acute Myeloid Leukaemia) on the 5th May 2015. This was a huge shock for my family and I. At the time my girlfriend and probably everyone else if I am honest, thought I had “man flu”. When I was diagnosed, I had no idea what was in store for me and for that, I am glad. What followed was over 7 months of intense treatment. Amongst other things it involved four cycles of chemotherapy, stays of over 6 weeks in hospital, a trip to HDU (high dependency unit) and a very drugged up 21st birthday in isolation. By the end I was cancer free, but mentally and physically I was broken. I have spent the majority of my life planning everyday around sport. I started swimming when I was 3 years old and over time my commitment and passion paid off. I competed in my county final; I was national biathlon and three-time schools national biathlon champion. Whilst I was at school, I also played rugby, tennis, football, hockey...you name the sport, I have done it. More recently, I have been playing for York city’s water polo team helping them enter and progress through the national league. Whilst I was at university I played for Sheffield Hallam and went to the gym practically every day. So, in short, I was health and fitness mad. By the end of my treatment I could barely recognise myself. I had gone from being a confident young man to a germaphobe avoiding any form of social interaction. I had gone from weighing 95kgs to around 70kgs. Bearing in mind I am 6ft 6, I looked like a twig. At 24 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE

this point doing the smallest of tasks such as walking up and down stairs or getting dressed made me out of breath and lightheaded. I never thought I would get my fitness back. Since being in remission from Leukaemia I have ran my first Marathon in Paris, I have completed IRONMAN UK, and have raised over £11,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust on the way. I have also created a blog online to inspire people that there is life after cancer and to create awareness of what having cancer entails. This is just from my experience; everyone’s journey is different but if I can just help one person see that there is light at the end of the horrible journey, I will have done my job. DO YOU SUFFER FROM A RESPIRATORY OR SKIN CONDITION?

D

o you, your children or someone you know suffer from a respiratory or skin condition such as COPD, asthma, psoriasis or eczema? What about coughs, colds, hay fever, issues with sleeping or stress and anxiety? I bet the answer is most definitely yes!

We have a children’s room (which has toys, books and a TV to keep the little ones entertained) and a separate adult’s room which is softly lit, has candles and relaxing music playing.

Chances are that we could help you. Salt therapy has been around for centuries when the ancient Greeks used it. Remember in ‘the olden days’ when we used to get sent to the seaside if we were ill? Well, salt therapy is exactly the same concept, it’s just more concentrated in our rooms. We grind down pharmaceutical rock salt and disperse this into our specialist salt rooms. All you have to do is sit back, relax, breathe deeply and benefit from the 100% natural, drug free treatment. So how does it work? Salt is naturally anti-bacterial and antiinflammatory so during your treatment you breathe in the tiny micro-particles which travel deep into your respiratory tract and skin. The salt can then help to breakdown any nasty bacteria or blockages that might be in your lungs and airways, helping you to breathe easier. With skin conditions, the salt can counteract any bacteria which may be causing dryness and itching in the top layers of skin and can also help to reduce any inflammation.

We have many fantastic reviews on Facebook from our lovely customers, telling how we’ve helped them to feel so much better so you can see for yourself exactly how we have helped others. Pop in for a nosy round or call us today for your free consultation to see if the only salt therapy centre in Yorkshire could help you.

THE SCRAPBOX!

SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST ANOTHER CHIPPY. You would be forgiven for driving by the little white understated building perched at the side of the layby on the A1079 at Dunnington and not giving it a second glance.

T

hree years ago, brothers Aman and Gavin saw the potential in what was at the time a disused truckers café, they set about renovating the building and turning it into a trendy modern fish & chip cafe and takeaway and named it The Scrapbox. Aman told People & Places that their original plan was to service the local surrounding villages and perhaps also pick up some of the passing trade on the A1079. He said, “We wanted to provide the area with good quality hearty food prepared traditionally with beef dripping using the finest produce and ingredients available”. Word of mouth very quickly grew and along with Facebook and of course Trip Advisor boasting a 5 star rating and comments such as “The best Fish & chip shop in York 5*****” , “don’t judge a book by its cover 5*****” The Scrapbox very quickly became the place

to stop off for either a treat or to feed the family. Aman said “We are now a multi award winning fish & chip shop open 7 days a week serving up Britain’s favourite dish at its highest quality. We have been open for 3 years and our reputation has been growing ever since, we have a loyal customer base and will continue to produce the best food at the highest standards” Since opening The Scrapbox has been voted the Best Fish & Chip Shop in York by the readers of York press, proud holders of the National Fryers Quality Award and named twice in the top 50 UK fish & chip shops by Fry Magazine. The Scrapbox is open 7 days a week from 11am to 8pm and situated just before Dunnington village on the A1079, YO19 5LF for sat nav, Tel 01904 489 392.

COOKING SKILLS GO OFF THE BOIL

W

hile celebrity chefs across Britain have spent years on a mission to make cooking more accessible, it appears youngsters still have a way to go when it comes to the basics.

sharply with the know-how of Britain’s older generation. Just nine per cent of over-65s admit they find it hard to cook rice compared with 37% of 16-24s. And over-55s are the least likely age group to admit pasta is difficult to cook, with just four per cent of fans falling at the culinary hurdle as opposed to 22% of 16-24s.

Indeed, according to latest research from Mintel, nearly a quarter of 16-24 year olds confess to having problems cooking pasta correctly.

Alex adds: “Britain’s more mature generations appear to be the most confident in the kitchen, suggesting our growing reliance on quick-fix foods is to the detriment of basic cooking skills.

And more than one in five adults, rising to two fifths of young cooks, admit making rice gives them the noodle.

“Television networks are crammed with cookery shows but their main aim is to entertain rather than educate.”

Some 34% of men agree that fresh pasta is easier to prepare than dry pasta - rising to 39% of 16-24s. By contrast, women, are more confident cooking dry pasta with only 28% agreeing fresh is easier to prepare.

Pasta’s place as a staple of the nation is reflected in the fact that nearly a third of Brits eat it two or three times a week - rising to 38% of 16-24 year olds. But while instant packet pasta may be perceived to be the domain of younger consumers, researchers found that of the 26% who pig out eat on packet pasta - this rises to 33% of 25-44 year olds, compared to just 28% of 16-24s.

Regionally it’s Londoners who have the most problems with 18% failing to capture that al dente texture, compared with just eight per cent in the north east and Scotland. However, when it comes to rice it’s all change - as 35% in the east and west Midlands have difficulty with the dish, falling to 20% in London and 17% in the south east and east Anglia.

The pasta and rice markets have benefited since recession as being an affordable meal solution - with 49% sales growth recorded for pasta and 26% in 2006-11. Despite some price rises, a massive 86% of those polled agree pasta is still a cheap meal solution, rising to 89% of 16-24 and 45-54 year olds.

Alex Beckett, Mintel’s senior food analyst, says: “It appears that the efforts of some of Britain’s best loved chefs to make cooking easier and more accessible have gone rather off the boil.

Meanwhile, rice is deemed a healthy and nutritious meal by eight in 10 people, but only 30% are convinced it’s healthier than pasta and potatoes.

“Indeed, it seems that this lack of confidence in being able to cook has resulted in an added cost being passed on, as consumers stump up for pricier chilled pasta as an easier option.

Reflecting Britain’s curry culture, Basmati tops the list of favourites with 69% tucking into the tasty accompaniment while 63% prefer long grain, 40% opt for microwavable, 28% select savoury and 27% enjoy wholegrain or brown. Thai or Jasmine at 13% and Arborio or risotto 17% are lower down the shopping list.

“That one in four rice users find it difficult to prepare rice properly is a likely barrier to more frequent usage of cheaper, dry rice. Knowing the basics of cooking from scratch rather than tearing open a pre-prepared packet could help young people improve their health as well as their bank balance.” The lack of culinary skills among younger shoppers contrasts 30 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE

Finally the fail safe companion of the lazy cook - instant noodles have certainly been capitalising on demand with a 10% increase in sales last year.

SLOE GIN MARTINI INGREDIENTS • 50ml Gin • 15ml Sloe Gin • 15ml Fresh lemon juice • 1tsp Cranberry juice

METHOD

1. Combine all the ingredients in an ice filled shaker and shake well until cold. 2. Serve in a martini glass with a slice of lemon for garnish.

HOW TO MAKE SLOE GIN

This is the best time of year to forage for sloes, although they can be brought on line.

• 500g ripe sloes

INGREDIENTS • 250g golden caster sugar

Look in the hedgerows to find blackthorn bushes (also known as prunus spinosa).

• 1 litre gin

Be careful though as they do have long thorns.

1. Rinse the sloes under cold water, then pat dry with a clean tea towel. 2. Using a fork, prick the sloes and tip into a 2-litre Kilner jar. 3. Add the sugar and gin, seal the jar and shake well. Store the jar in a cool dark place and leave for two to three months. 4. Line a plastic Sieve with muslin set over a bowl and strain. Decant 5. Into clean, dry bottles, then seal and label. Your slow gin is now ready to drink.

For the best flavour wait until the berries are ripe before picking. They should be a rich dark purple and should squash easily between your fingertips. It is a good sign if they have already started to drop naturally to the ground.

GARDENING: SMALL GARDEN, BIG IMPRESSION

A

lthough there are convincing statistics that show the majority of Britons have access to some sort of outdoor space- even with the ‘steep’ decline since 1990, 90% of households have some Photo: Fuzzy Images greenery- this doesn’t necessarily mean we all have decent sized gardens.

COMPACT FURNITURE We all want one of those massive swinging benches, a beautiful weather-treated natural wood table, and a padded recliner, but these things may not be practical. We do want something to sit on regardless, though, so look for furniture that saves on space. DECLUTTER Over the years, our outdoor space can become cluttered with unused plant pots, watering cans, old footballs, beheaded gnomes from that time someone tripped over at the BBQ party, etcetera etcetera. Getting rid of all this needs to be a priority to free up room.

From terrace rows to new build estates, space suitable for building is at a premium in the United Kingdom, and this means that often gardens come secondary in the list of priorities. Don’t think that just because you have a small garden it doesn’t mean you can’t still make a very big impression, though. Here are five key things to consider when looking at a redesign, all of which guarantee to maximise what’s there for maximum impact.

THINK IN CIRCLES If you try to make any central space circular- whether it’s a lawn or a paved area- then you will notice that the whole garden or yard begins to feel like it has been opened up. Yes, it’s nothing but an optical illusion, but it’s a very effective (albeit labour intensive) one.

PAINT YOUR WALLS (AND FENCES) This is one of the easiest things to do, and has a dramatic effect. White washed walls will automatically feel more open than pretty much any other colour, but providing you opt for any light colour you should find the same is true.

INTELLIGENT LIGHTING No, this isn’t the latest device to hit the Internet of Thing, and we understand that lighting isn’t something everyone is in a position to introduce. Nevertheless, if you are using lighting position sources in a way that creates depth in shallow spaces.
