It’s no secret the media world is growing increasingly fragmented and that the public can choose among a dizzying array of information sources.

As we sort out the impact of all of this, it is important to remember our core duty - compiling the community record, connecting community members with each other, informing and entertaining still matters.

GEORGE RODRIGUE has experience in journalism as impressive as it is wide ranging. He is editor of The Plain Dealer in Cleveland, Ohio. Before taking the helm in Cleveland, he was assistant news director of WFAA-TV in Dallas, the ABC affiliate in the nation’s fifth-largest television market.

He spent much of his career at the Dallas Morning News, where he won the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for stories that exposed segregation and discrimination in federally subsidized housing programs. And he was one of eight reporters who won the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting for a series about violence against women.

He served as a Washington correspondent and chief of the paper’s European Bureau. In 1998 he became managing editor and then executive editor of the Press-Enterprise, in Riverside, California. In 2001 he moved to Washington, DC, as Vice President and Bureau Chief for Belo Corp. to supervise print and broadcast journalists serving three newspapers, 17 television news operations and some 20 websites.

He returned to the Dallas Morning News as Vice President and Managing Editor and his staff’s coverage of Hurricane Katrina won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography

STEVEN A . SMITH is clinical assistant professor in the University of Idaho School of Journalism and Mass Media. He teaches mass media ethics, his primary area of interest, as well as media and society, advanced reporting, and media management and entrepreneurship.

Steve is a veteran news professional who last served as editor of The Spokesman-Review in Spokane.

In a 38-year professional career, he was editor of papers in Salem, Oregon, and Colorado Springs, Colorado and worked two years as assistant to the vice presidents/news at Knight-Ridder Inc. in Miami, Florida.

Steve has been a frequent lecturer on civic journalism and newsroom change for the Pew Center on Civic Journalism, the Poynter Institute for Media Studies and the American Press Institute and has lectured on newsroom training issues for the Freedom Forum. Steve has lectured on newspaper transparency and has trained journalists in Sweden, Norway and Ukraine.

PUBLISHERS A D M A N AG E R S PETER LAMB was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa and today is a Strategic Marketing Consultant, based in Miami, Fla., with a specialty in media organizations.

“The goal of my consulting practice is to utilize the sophisticated strategic marketing principles and techniques, learned while doing my MBA at Harvard Business School, and meshing them with a hands-on sales approach, by getting the entire sales organization to buy into a single idea: ‘Think like the customer.’”

Lamb will lead participants through a energizing process for sales managers and others to generate new revenue streams, both print and online.

Lamb has lent his expertise to many media organizations, including Time-Inc, UK; Metroland Media, Canada; El Clasificado, Los Angeles, California; The Flyer Media Group, Tampa, Florida; Media24, South Africa; Black Press, Canada; Sound Publishing, Seattle; Russ Media, Hungary and Austria.

He is also a regular speaker at International Media conferences, most recently in Hong Kong, Berlin, Dubai, Toronto and Whistler, BC.

MIKE FANCHER currently is interim director for the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communications Turnbull Center in Portland, as well as the Agora Journalism Center, which focuses on journalism innovation and civic engagement.

He is the former executive editor of The Seattle Times, where he worked for 30 years. He is a member of the Washington Coalition for Open Government and co-chair of the diversity committee of the American Society of News Editors. Mike also was a 2008-2009 Donald W. Reynolds Fellow in the Missouri School of Journalism and the 20112012 Visiting Chair in journalism ethics at the University of Nevada.

Come learn photography and documentary photojournalism basics from a pro. Wenatchee World photo editor Don Seabrook also will talk about how to cover a tragedy through the lens of a camera. Seabrook documented both the Carlton Complex Fires of 2014 and the Sleepy Hollow Fire of 2015.

DON SEABROOK, a graduate of the University of Washington, began his professional career in 1982 as a summer intern at The Wenatchee World. He was hired a year later by The World and moved into a photo editor position 10 years later. He has won numerous awards, including those from the Associated Press, Society of Professional Journalism, Society for News Design and the University of Missouri POYi. Has been in the top five of the National Press Photographers Association Regional Photographer of the Year award many times, winning that award in 2010.
