How to choose where to live What to base your decision on varies from person to person. Each hall has different amenities and special features, so some things to consider are: • Proximity to class, computer lab, recreational facilities and food • House, suite-style or traditional community with shared bath • Learning communities • Hall amenities Most residence halls are “doubles” with two people sharing a room.

Other rooms types are: Triples: Burnhams, Draper, Davis, French, Henry, Siedschlag, Zimmerman. Quads: Burnhams, Draper, Siedschlag. Quads have two double rooms connected by a common living room.

Furniture Each residence hall comes with the basics. You are encouraged to make your room your own, adding personal items or carpeting to decorate it. Most halls have loftable furniture, which means that the beds can be raised or lowered to create alternate furniture layouts to better utilize space.

Eicher/LeFevre is a hall full of busy students on the go.

Residents frequently use the hall’s fitness room, which is equipped with treadmills, spin bikes, elliptical machines and weight equipment. The hall hosts the Health Professionals Community and Wellness House.

Harrison/Stinson residents frequently use the hall’s fitness room and game room for a little fun and relaxation. The hall’s kitchen makes it easy to prepare meals for students with a roomonly contract. Home of the Business Learning Community, Harrison/Stinson is located close to the Haworth College of Business and intramural fields.

Eicher/LeFevre

There is always someone around to study or hang out with in Britton/Hadley. Those interested in grabbing a quick cup of java or relaxing during a local band night can head down to Mug Shots, the campus coffeehouse. The building hosts the Education Community, is located near Sindecuse Health Center and is the Valley hall closest to main campus.

Garneau/Harvey is a great place for students who want to get involved and have a successful first year. The hall hosts Science Scholars and Magellan House, a community for students who want to explore everything WMU has to offer. Exploratory advising has an office in the hall, and ample parking is right outside.

Eldridge Hall is the home of the Engineering House and includes academic supports like a Student Success Center and computer lab. Fox Hall is tailored to the needs and experiences of transfer students and all transfer residents live in single rooms provided at a discounted rate during their first academic year at WMU. Transfer students eligible for Fox Hall must have sophomore standing. Both halls emphasize students being able to connect with each other and create strong networks.

Western Heights is an innovative residence hall complex for firstyear students. The first building of its kind in Michigan, the hall is designed to provide privacy options while encouraging socialization. Each living area houses 30-35 students and has its own kitchen, study area and centrally private bathroom.

Henry Hall is a distinct environment that blends tradition and spontaneity. Ample parking is nearby, which is perfect for aviation students who opt to live in the Aviation House. Students can choose a room-only option, and the hall’s kitchen makes it easy to prepare your own food.

For those with a meal plan, an enclosed walkway connects Henry to a dining hall and the Bernhard Center.

Although set up as two single sex buildings, Draper and Siedschlag connect on the upper floors and students frequently intermix.

An active building in the South neighborhood, Draper/Siedschlag is home to the Fine Arts House.

The hall has practice rooms and studio space for Fine Arts students. The hall has a Carryout dining service, and students walk to one of the nearby halls for fullservice dining.

Students in the Burnhams are a diverse mix of first-year and returning students. Residents include student athletes, so there is a constant hub of activity

WMU’s two transfer communities focus on easing your transition to campus with 15 activities to connect you with other students and the university. Since each community is in a different hall, you can mix and match building styles and amenities to find the place that’s right for you.

There are a lot of opportunities in the residence halls to meet others and make a difference. It’s up to you to choose what to do and how much you want to participate.

Activities are planned weekly in each hall. Whether you want something informational or are in the mood for some fun, it’s not too hard to find things to do right in your building. There are also several leadership opportunities including attending conferences, involvement in hall organizations and staff positions.

An outstanding team of professionals and students staff our residence halls. Your primary staff connection will be the resident assistant, or RA, on your floor. As undergraduate students, RAs are selected for their skills in reaching out to peers, listening to concerns and knowledge of campus. They help build social connections in the hall and serve as a personal resource for you.

A full-time professional hall director supervises each building and lives in the hall. The hall director is responsible for creating a learning environment by working with students, hall staff, the facilities, crisis intervention and academic support. Assisting the hall director is a graduate student who also lives in the building. The graduate assistant hall director works with hall activities and promoting student involvement.

**Rates are for the 2014-15 academic year. Rates for 2015-16 will be set in spring 2015 by the WMU Board of Trustees. The residence hall contract is for a full academic year unless the resident is transferring, studying abroad, withdrawing or graduating.

Roommates Having a roommate is a chance to learn about someone new. He or she may be from out of state, a different country or just down the road. Most importantly, your roommate is someone you can share your WMU experience with. If you want to meet someone new, we will place you with someone who shares similar habits and interests. If you already know someone you want to live with, you can request each other as roommates. If requesting a roommate, both signed contracts must be received by May 15.

Eating on campus What are the meal plans options?

If you live in the residence halls, you are required to have a meal plan unless you choose a “room-only” housing plan in Henry or Harrison/Stinson halls.

All meal plans give you access to any residence hall dining room.

Each plan comes with Dining Dollars which can be used at the campus cafés. A meal plan week is Monday breakfast through Sunday Late-night services.

A meal equivalency option available at Parkview Café allows students to use one meal from their meal plan for breakfast, lunch or dinner while at the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The meal equivalency is a defined dollar amount used to purchase a meal at the Parkview campus.

Sometimes you have a crazy day without much time to stop and eat. When that happens, you can order a Carryout sack lunch and pick it up at your dining hall Monday through Friday.

What are Dining Dollars?

What’s next The next big step for your student is signing up for a residence hall. Review this guide with your student and discuss his or her ideas about next year. We recommend that students complete the online sign up process independently to become familiar with the system. However, we know that sometimes a little help and reminding from mom or dad is needed. If you are signing up your student, talk first about his or her preferences so you know what to select when signing up.

Roommates

Sign up starts at noon February 3, 2015.

Assignments are done in the order contracts are received, so signing up early is always better. If you have a roommate request or want a learning community, contracts should be received by May 15.

If you have a roommate preference, provide the name and Bronco NetID of the individual. Both roommates must request each other, and both contracts must be received by May 15.

Hall choice Pick six different buildings so we have a good idea of where you want to live on campus if your first choice hall is unavailable.

How to submit your housing and dining contract Apply early. You will increase your chances of being assigned the hall of your choice and being paired with your preferred roommate, if applicable. Assignments are done in the order signed contracts are received, so if you’re ready to go, just log on. If you prefer not to register online, let us know and we will mail you a contract.

1. Go to the GoWMU portal housing channel or wmich.edu/housing and select the “Sign Up” button. You will need your Bronco NetID and password.

We are unable to accommodate suitemate requests or roommate requests for threeperson rooms and quads.

2. Answer a series of questions, including ranking your residence hall preferences, giving us roommate information and selecting a meal plan.

3. Once you complete your preferences, print a copy of the 2015-16 Residence Life and Dining Services Contract.

Learning community Learning communities are floors within buildings, so picking the hall hosting the community does not mean you’ll live there.

Be sure to select the learning community you want from the drop-down menu in addition to selecting the hall where it’s housed.

If you are considering an academic learning community and want to live with a friend who is not majoring in that college, you may still request each other as roommates.
