remembering. Our beloved program's name sake, fierce advocate, champion, and icon, Dr. John Seita, passed away on June 11, 2023 at the age of 67. Sadly, student's new to the program will never have the chance to meet him as so many Seita Scholars who came before did; but his name and legacy live on in each Seita Scholar. They carry with them the character of a man, who as a youth experienced foster care and came to WMU, earned his bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and PhD, all while dealing with intermittent homelessness, a lack of a supportive networks, and financial challenges inherent in that status. He faced and overcame many of the same obstacles that Seita Scholars encounter today, and he persevered to earn his degrees and successfully transition to professional achievement, serving for many many years until his retirement as a professor of social work at Michigan State University.

Dr. Seita is survived by his wife, Lori, his daughter, Anorah, 236 graduates of the Seita Scholars Program to date, and many more to come. His legacy lives on through his family and the Seita Scholars, as well as through all who embrace and support the mission of the Seita Scholars Program on the campus of WMU and throughout the community.

Dr. Seita’s life is inspirational and represents hope to face what lies ahead for every Seita Scholar. Through the Seita Scholars Program, every Seita Scholar has the opportunity to change the paradigm of their own experience through the transformative power of education. In turn, every Seita Scholar who changes the trajectory of their life by earning their degree and transitioning to professional achievement transforms not only their own life, but the lives of those in their family and interpersonal networks. Over sixteen years ago, Dr. Seita gave a presentation at a conference that inspired a WMU faculty member and two senior administrative staff to advocate for the development of a support program at WMU for youth with lived experience in foster care. They quickly gained the support of the University president, and the Seita Scholars Program began serving students in 2008. Dr. Seita’s legacy also includes the Fostering Success Coaching Institute, which evolved from the Seita Scholars Program at WMU. Today, professionals who work with youth from foster care in higher education all over the nation benefit from the training of this coaching model. The Seita Scholars Program is named after him not because he was a wealthy donor or the founder of the program, but because of the example of his life and his work to improve outcomes of youth who have experienced foster care. He authored and co-authored more than 8 books, telling his story and sharing his trauma as a vehicle to create understanding of the lived experience of youth from care.

Dr. Seita (far right) with Seita Scholars and Dr. John Dunn at WMU’s 2008 campus classic event.

Dr. John Seita was a reluctant celebrity whenever he came to visit the Seita Scholars. He was always warm, soft-spoken and quick to deflect the success of the program onto the University, the program staff, and of course the students themselves. He came to campus for events, donated meals over the holiday breaks, and made generous financial donations to the program that bears his name, always quietly, without fanfare. Students were often awed when meeting him for the first time in person, and they had plenty of opportunities to do so. They carried the identity of “Seita Scholars,” and this was John Seita in person!

Dr. John Seita 1956 - 2023 For the inspiration of your personal experience that led to the creation of the Seita Scholars Program; for your ongoing support and engagement with the program; and for lending your name to represent the program, which is at the core of our identity and our justifiable pride in that identity—we are forever gratful may you rest in peace.

greetings. Colleagues, Friends, and Supporters of the Seita Scholars Program, As we come to the close of another academic year, I find myself reflecting on the myriad of emotions, challenges, changes, and many moments of growth we’ve experienced. It is with a deep sense of sorrow that we remember Dr. John Seita, whose untimely passing has left an irreplaceable void in our hearts. Dr. Seita’s unwavering commitment to our shared vision, and his fierce advocacy for students with experience in foster care have left an indelible mark that will forever resonate in our hearts. Despite the shadow of this loss, there have been rays of light and hope, none brighter than the achievements of our Study Abroad students. I am pleased to share that our inaugural Seita study abroad program successfully launched in May 2023. Fourteen students participated overcoming challenges that come with adjusting to a new culture, and returned with enriching experiences, stories of perseverance and personal growth, and enhanced global perspectives. From establishing academic collaborations in the Dominican Republic to participating in community projects overseas, their journeys have been nothing short of inspiring. I am also proud to spotlight a few of our Seita Scholars who have demonstrated academic excellence and community engagement. With open arms and immense joy, we welcomed our 2022-23 cohort of Seita Scholars. Their energy, passion, and fresh insights promise to add another vibrant chapter to our ever-evolving story. We pledge our unwavering support and resources to aid in their journey of discovery and growth. Our achievements, initiatives, and vision wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of our donors. Your faith in our mission and your financial contributions have been instrumental in shaping countless success stories and propelling us towards our goals. We are profoundly grateful for your continued investment and belief in Seita Scholars and the work we do. This year serves as a testament to our community's ability to find strength in adversity, joy in shared successes, and unity in purpose. As we forge ahead, let us carry forward Dr. Seita’s legacy, have enthusiasm for the present, and an unyielding hope for the future. Thank you for being an invaluable part of our journey.

Warm regards, Ronicka D. Hamilton, MA, LLPC, ACC Director

Yodit Fitsum Cohort: Fall 2020 Expected Graduation: Spring 2024 Major: Supply Chain Management Minor: General Business, Business Analytics Career Goals: First of all, I plan to graduate with a good GPA and gain valuable experience in the supply chain industry. I am currently interning as a Supply Chain intern at Graphic Packaging International (GPI). My post-graduation plan involves relocating to Texas to work as a main buyer at a new GPI plant. Following a year of work, I intend to pursue an MBA in Finance from one of the Ivy League universities. I also have a plan to start a company in one of the central African countries that will help the electric vehicle industry focus on recycling batteries. While advancing in my career over the next couple of years, I plan to expand my network to support my professional growth and personal development. WMU Favorites: There are many things that I really like about WMU. I appreciate the diverse communities, and I also appreciate the fact that they provide a lot of resources for students. For instance, in the business college, we have numerous resources to ensure that students are successful. I also really like that WMU offers so many study-abroad opportunities for students to enhance their college experience. The Seita Scholars Program Means: The Seita Scholars Program is not just a program for me; it is a community that I can call home and family. Since the day I visited WMU in 2019, they have made me feel welcome and that this is a safe place

to call home. I went through so much during the last three years of my time at the university, but I had my coach, Tim, who I could rely on. They have helped me financially so much. I was able to focus more on my schooling and even study abroad in Germany this last summer because they were there to support me financially, and they also believed in me. There aren’t enough words to describe how much they mean to me. I can only say I am grateful for them believing in me and supporting me to go above and beyond in my college experience. I am also grateful for creating a place that I can call my community. Message to Program Supporters: First of all, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for your hard work and financial contributions. I also want to extend my appreciation for believing in and supporting me. Your support has allowed me to focus more on my studies and worry less about finances. I was also fortunate enough to study abroad in Germany, and I am excited to announce that I will be embarking on another study abroad journey in India in December 2023 for two weeks, all made possible because of your generosity.

I promise you that I will work diligently and, in the future, find ways to give back to others, both as a Supply Chain Manager and potentially by offering scholarships to future students like myself.

about. For the past 15 years, the program has been transformational in the lives of over 550 former foster youth. Our Seita Scholars Program, which includes a scholarship, an on-campus home and campus coaching, is the nation’s most comprehensive collegiate program for enabling foster care alumni to realize their potential. In Michigan alone, over 1,200 young people age out of the state foster care system annually. With limited resources, 33% become homeless and 50% are unemployed at age 21. Estimates show just 20% of foster youth enroll in college compared to 60% of non-foster youth, and they are up to eight times less likely to earn a degree. Three WMU colleagues – Yvonne Unrau, Penny Bundy, and Mark Delorey – conceived the program following a talk by Dr. John Seita. A product of Michigan’s foster care system himself, Dr. Seita earned three degrees from WMU and was a champion for former foster care youth.

The Seita Scholars Program is designed to address the academic gaps and needs that many youth who experienced foster care encounter. Included in these program supports are: . Scholarships (for cost of attendance, emergencies, and study abroad) . Campus Coaches (24 hour on call support, meeting student needs at locations and times convenient to the student) . Year-round campus housing . Academic assessment, support, and monitoring …and much more

The Seita Scholars Program is the place I can always go to for advice, help, and feedback that informs my way of thinking. The program and my campus coach are my constants, as professors, peers, curriculum, and routines change with each semester.

Career Goals: My career goals include writing a book about my life and following that up with a children’s series, akin to the style of Clifford or Arthur, about my favorite stuffed animal, who is in foster care to normalize foster care in young children so they can grow up with compassion and acceptance of each other no matter where they come from. I also hope to keep working with CASA more in the future.

To Program Supporters: I want to thank you for all that you do in support of the Seita Scholars Program. The Seita Scholars Program has afforded me the opportunity to prioritize my education. Whenever I come into the office the staff with their kindness and compassion make me feel safe and valued. Despite the statistics of foster youth even graduating from high school, this program has made my graduating from college a reality. So many positive trajectories have taken place in so many lives, and so many dreams come true, so thank you!

WMU Favorites: I enjoy the landscape architecture and plant life on campus. It feels like I am riding around a park whenever I bike to the library or to my classes because it is so open and full of beautiful colors. Campus also has many benches, shaded tables, and other areas to sit which encourages students to spend more time outside. I also enjoy how easy it is to get around the main campus so I am never late for my classes. The Seita Scholars Program Means: Financial support which alleviates stress on my mental health. Thanks to this wonderful program I’ve been able to make my higher education my number one job.

Despite the statistics of foster youth even graduating from high school, this program has made my graduating from college a reality.

Staff celebrating graduating Seita Scholars.

We recognize the resilience and potential of all Seita Scholars. While we are proud of the strides we have made to date, we are consistently evaluating and refining our approach, intentionally remaining responsive to the evolving needs of our students. Ensuring that students not only enroll at Western Michigan University, but also graduate is vital for their future success and the well-being of our community at large. At the conclusion of the Summer 2023 semester, the Seita Scholars Program has 236 graduates from Western Michigan University. This brings the graduation rate of Seita Scholars far above the national average for youth who experienced foster care.

Cultural Connections Day Celebration This day recognizes the richness that our unique and diverse student body bring to our program, each other and the community.

study abroad. We are thrilled to share the successful completion of our inaugural Seita Study Abroad Program. Research has highlighted a positive correlation between study abroad experiences and higher graduation rates. With this compelling evidence as our guide, we launched our program, confident that it would provide invaluable global exposure to Seita Scholars and bolster our graduation outcomes. The feedback and results from this first endeavor have been exceedingly encouraging. Our students returned with enriched perspectives, broader worldviews, and an even more profound commitment to their academic pursuits. While the initial success of the program has been promising, our vision extends beyond the immediate. We eagerly anticipate assessing the impact of the study abroad program over an extended period, with a keen eye on the 5-year outcomes. Given our encouraging start, we remain optimistic about the lasting benefits our students will reap from this transformative experience. To all who played a role in making our first study abroad program a resounding success, we extend our deepest gratitude. Together, we are forging a brighter, globally-informed future for Seita Scholars.

My study abroad experience with Seita taught me that my world is not the only world out there and inspired me to keep learning and exploring! Studying abroad also helped me realize there are many different struggles in life. So I am determined to keep putting one foot in front of the other each day to make my world better! Dallas Mate 2nd year Seita Scholar, Computer Science Major

The Seita Study Abroad Program, a journey to graduation success designed specifically for Seita Scholars, is a short-term, faculty-led study abroad course that explores education and social service sectors in the Dominican Republic. The course places special emphasis on the Seita Scholars 7 Life Domains framework, specifically, personal and cultural identity, social relationships, and life skills. The course included in-person class sessions, an 8-night/9-day travel itinerary in the greater Santo Domingo area comprised of visits to government, educational and social service agencies, opportunities for service, as well as reflective and scholarly assignments.

The study abroad trip led by the Seita Scholars Program to the Dominican Republic was an invaluable experience. Every discussion held and all the places we visited introduced me to new perspectives on concepts I’ve been studying such as social justice and global politics. Since the study abroad program my academic and professional goals have become clearer to me. I’ve begun to focus on macro social work and a career path in global politics. I left the D.R. with bigger aspirations and more than enough motivation to make it all happen. Deborah Williams 3rd year Seita Scholar, Social Work Major

The 2024 Program will include 12 Seita Scholars selected through application process. Coordinating are Dr. Ramona Lewis, faculty director, and Seita coaches Peter Thompson and Tim Liggins with consultation from Ronicka Hamilton, director. In country academic host is two-time WMU alumna Ms. Angela Liriano.

gratitude. The Seita Scholars Program has numerous opportunities for community members to get involved—one of which is the Welcome Pack Donations. Many Seita Scholars arrive at Western Michigan University without basic household items. To help students fill this gap, we seek groups and individuals who are willing to sponsor one or more welcome packs and fill it with supplies for an incoming Seita Scholar. Our goal is to give every new Seita Scholar a full welcome pack and have modified packs for returning Seita Scholars. As we reflect on the past year, we are filled with immense gratitude for the unwavering support and commitment our donors have shown to Seita Scholars. Your generous contributions have played a pivotal role in ensuring that Seita Scholars continue their education endeavors unhindered, and access resources and experiences that enrich their academic journey. Because of you, each incoming Seita Scholar received a Welcome Pack, fourteen Seita Scholars were able to study abroad, and you filled numerous gaps of unmet need for several Seita Scholars.

coaching. We believe in the power of interdependent relationships and how those relationships can shape the academic and personal growth of Seita Scholars. This belief is personified in the dedicated individuals we proudly refer to as Campus Coaches. The Seita Scholars Program has five master’s level professionals who serve as Campus Coaches that hold degrees in counseling, education, student affairs and social work. Each Campus Coach also completes Fostering Success Coach Training, particularly focusing on working with students who have experienced foster care. Coaches participate in continuing professional development on topics such as mental health, trauma, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Campus Coaches embody our five core values which are compassion, service, transformation, vulnerability and community. Our Campus Coaches serve as the backbone of our program, guiding Seita Scholars through the nuances of college life, academic challenges & successes, and personal development. Recognizing that each student’s journey is unique, our Campus Coaches provide tailored support partnering with Seita Scholars as they navigate their academic paths with increased confidence. Through regular interactions, they forge bonds of trust, becoming a go-to source of encouragement, wisdom, and constructive solutions. Campus Coaches play a critical role in cultivating a sense of belonging, bridging gaps, and fostering a vibrant, inclusive community. Coaching is a demanding role but seeing students succeed, holistically, is an incredible reward!
