INSPIRING BNEI & BNOT TORAH TO THRIVE IN THE MODERN WORLD

REFLECTIONS FROM 2016-17 If last year was the year of newness, transition and potential, this year was the year of actualization – as our new building in Skokie truly became home for students and staff alike. It was a full year of learning where students and faculty maximized the potential of our new space, with learning happening all day long in classrooms, the commons area and throughout the hallways. Teachers, who once had no meeting space or personal desks, this year experienced an academic year where colleagues sat next to one another in teacher workrooms. Collaboration became as simple as a swivel of a chair in their shared offices. As always, this year included tremendous growth for our students on individual levels and our school on a communal level. This report highlights many of the most noteworthy accomplishments over this past school year, including students’ accomplishments that rival or exceed those of any top-tier college-preparatory school in the nation:

5% of seniors were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program

33% of seniors were Illinois State Scholars 55% of seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society, Torah Chapter

21% of seniors devoted over 250 hours of chesed to be inducted into the Deborah Katzin z”l Chesed Society

80% of seniors are spending a gap year in Israel Top 8 Out of nearly 400 schools, Charlotte’s Web, ICJA’s Literary

Magazine was recognized by the National Council of Teachers of English as one of the top high school literary magazines

14 juniors were either finalists or semifinalists in the state-wide writing

contest, Letters About Literature, sponsored by The Library of Congress Center for the Book

Our seniors were accomplished in Torah learning, derech eretz, in acts of chesed and academics. We wish our graduates mazal and hatzlacha as they head to Israel and to university. This year, as every year, our students left their mark locally and nationally in academics, athletics, advocacy and student clubs. Faced with reports of terror in Israel, our students responded in the only way they know how–with love, chesed, tzedakah, tefillah and learning. In addition, students learned crucial Israel advocacy and leadership skills both in and out of the classroom, joining national programs like AIPAC and Yeshiva University National Model UN program. Teachers incorporated more STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) into the classroom experience, and four courses were devoted to STEM. In their quest to give back to the community, our students dedicated countless hours to chesed by raising tzedakah, working with Keshet peer buddies during school hours, peer tutoring and even tutoring at the neighboring public elementary school. In athletics, our teams excelled locally and nationally as formidable competitors. Most importantly, whether in a local or national interscholastic program, our students were recognized for their talent, character and commitment to the community.

MESSAGE FROM OUR DEAN Dear Academy Family, This past November, my classmates and I celebrated our 40th ICJA reunion at a Shabbaton in Israel, only to be followed by another reunion a few months later in Chicago. Both were wonderful events, opportunities to reconnect with people and reflect on the amazing impact the four years we spent together in the Academy had on our lives. After teaching at the Academy for 36 years, it’s an impact that I sometimes take for granted. And yet, at those events I was able to see the Academy from a new perspective and appreciate all over again how our school has shaped the lives of thousands of young men and women who have passed through its doors. Seventy-five years ago a group of men and women had a dream, to create a new kind of Jewish educational institution that would combine the finest Jewish education with the finest general education. Under the auspices of both the Associated Talmud Torahs and the Hebrew Theological College, they created what was then called the Chicago Jewish Academy and what, since 1968, we have called Ida Crown Jewish Academy. Most importantly, they created a place where students have thrived socially, academically and religiously. With your support, we continue that tradition and work to find new ways to engage our students intellectually, emotionally and communally. Whether through partnerships with youth groups such as NCSY, Bnei

Akiva or CTeen, our work with Northwestern University’s Office of STEM Education, or our award-winning advocacy work via AIPAC – Ida Crown Jewish Academy continues to lead the way toward preparing students for lives of commitment and engagement. Please take a few moments to read our accomplishments of the past year, and then commit to helping us make a difference in the lives of some of the best and brightest young men and women in America. No doubt, in 40 years from now, your efforts and the talents of our educational staff may be the subject of fond memories of alumni as they look back and appreciate all the Academy has done for them! With G-d’s help, may we together, inspire bnei and bnot Torah to thrive in the modern world! B’vracha,

Rabbi Dr. Leonard A. Matanky

EPIC OPEN HOUSE FOR A LEGENDARY GAME When the Cubs were set to make history on the same night as Ida Crown Jewish Academy’s biggest recruitment event, rather than cancel the program, staff scrambled to put together an amazing World Series Open House. Last year when ICJA staff scheduled the launch of the recruitment season for November 2, 2016, no one would have guessed that it would coincide with the Cubs’ World Series game 7. Even just prior to the annual open house when the Cubs clinched the National League pennant, the admissions team hoped for a Championship win before game 7. But, once the Cubs opened game 6 with a solo home run, followed by a two-run double, the ICJA staff huddled together to put “Plan B” into action. Emails went out to prospective parents and students the minute the Cubs won game 6, inviting everyone to watch the game from ICJA’s bleachers on one of the largest screens in town. By the morning of the World Series game, the ICJA staff had no idea if they should order 25 hot dogs or 250. They decided to plan big and then were blown away by the over 200 people who joined what turned out to be an incredible World Series party. Prospective students were greeted at the door with a Cubs National League Championship hat, custom embroidered for the event. The mood was festive, as senior leaders served as vendors, passing out ball game food in the gym bleachers. For the pre-game show, the students and parents heard from ICJA Dean Rabbi Dr. Leonard Matanky, and then the group cheered for the Cubs from opening pitch on. During every commercial, the volume was muted, and students and staff presented their own “commercials” marketing ICJA to the crowd.

A 1:1 TECHNOLOGY SCHOOL Technology and specifically, iPads, have become so ubiquitous in the ICJA classroom that it’s hard to imagine the school day without them. Since 2015 when ICJA became a 1:1 technology school, where every student receives a tablet beginning in ninth grade, students and teachers have adapted academically in ways big and small. ON ANY GIVEN DAY THIS PAST YEAR, STUDENTS AND TEACHERS USE TECHNOLOGY FOR: • Assignments • Assessments • Text books • Communication between students and staff • Video creation • Computer programming and more Next year, 2017-18, will be the first year that all four high school grades will have a device, thanks to Natalie Schleifer, president and director of the Jack P. Schleifer Foundation, who has underwritten the iPads. The Foundation was set up by Natalie’s father, who was committed to Jewish education and Religious Zionism. Technology in the classroom, from iPads to SmartBoards, can be a tool or just a digital substitute for teaching in the same traditional way. At ICJA, the goal is for technology to enhance the curriculum and classroom experience—keeping students more engaged, providing them with the 21st Century STEM skills (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) they need for the future and meeting them in the native space where this generation of students is most comfortable. To achieve that goal requires constant learning, evaluating and adjusting. This past school year, early technology adopters from every department met weekly to assess our technology goals and create a vision of where we are headed in technology and STEM. These groups are headed by chairs Mrs. Olivia Friedman and Rabbi Binyomin Segal. Members focused on three goals: 1. Digital Citizenship: Developing robust curriculum training for staff to support International Society for Technology in Education student standards and digital age learning. These skills are embedded in the classroom throughout the four-year curriculum. 2. Embedded Technology Skills: Identify which skills—everything from how to use Google Drive on an iPad to how to make a movie—should be taught within the regular ICJA curriculum and then determine which courses and instructors should cover them. 3. New STEM Courses: Develop one additional STEM class (See sidebar). Members of this group attend ISTE conferences, reach out to other Jewish schools around the country and visit local schools using technology well—including Lane Tech, with one of the best MakerLabs in Chicago. Teaching technology and STEM skills is a challenge because it is so fluid, says Olivia Friedman. “Research shows we want students with more flexibility of thought and creativity and yet, we still need to make sure students are meeting all the standard college requirements.” As we rise to the challenge of meeting our students’ needs in the dynamic digital age, we are grateful to have the support of our board and donors like the Natalie Schleifer and Jack P. Schleifer Foundation’s philanthropy to ensure our school is a model of teaching STEM both among Jewish day schools and college preparatory high schools.

HOW TECHNOLOGY HAS TRANSFORMED THE CLASSROOM To understand how iPads have transformed the educational experience at ICJA, look no further than Mrs. Chavee Gottlieb’s junior year chemistry courses. In her paperless classroom, students find their pre-lab prep work in their online learning management program, Haiku. From there the students complete the work and submit it online the day of the lab. In the classroom, as Mrs. Gottlieb presents the material on Nearpod, the students follow along with her slides on their own devices. “I can see if their name goes red, they’re not on the right slide,” says Mrs. Gottlieb (so much for day dreaming!). After a few slides, there is an exercise to apply the lesson. Once the students press “submit,” Mrs. Gottlieb gets immediate feedback for the lesson. She can then either explain the material in another way or move on. Students now have all the slides and classroom material to take home and study. They can even log in to follow the lecture if they are at home sick or out of town. Following are some of the many advantages of technology that Mrs. Gottlieb says she sees in the chemistry classroom: • Students are more engaged. • Grades are improving. • Collaboration has become easier. • She doesn’t start class by asking, “What was on the board yesterday?” and then put it up all over again. • The class covers material faster. • She no longer photocopies papers and keeps track of who missed a lab • There’s a record of every student who turns in homework. “Digitizing” her curriculum has taken a tremendous amount of upfront work for Mrs. Gottlieb, but the results, she says, have been worthwhile.

STEM COURSES AT ICJA Now in our third year of offering courses exclusively devoted to teaching 21st Century STEM skills, we continue to plan additional courses to meet our students’ interests and needs. Courses are under the auspices of Dr. Rochelle Green, director of 21st Century teaching and learning.

Next year our digital committee is creating the first ICJA MakerSpace lab, which will include opportunities for students to use digital creativity to teach skills, including: 3D printing, digital artwork and design. We are also offering our first STEM course for freshmen with a strong engineering focus.

FINE ARTS AT THE ACADEMY The arts program at ICJA has grown and thrived since moving into our Skokie building. Both the art and music rooms’ central location in the building (as opposed to the basement!) means that art and music students spend free periods perfecting art projects or practicing instruments. During any given period throughout the afternoon, students and staff can hear piano or guitar in the lunchroom or nearby. The school band, led by professional musicians, performed numerous times this year, including at the scholarship dinner and the pep rally. Advanced art students this year competed in the annual Bonnie Dayan Visual Art Competition. The award is provided by Harvey and Etta Saltzman in memory of their daughter, Bonnie Dayan a”h, parent of ICJA alumni. There were 22 pieces submitted in the running for the monetary awards, and incredible artists Mendy Zucker and Oriya Falk both took first place.

FIRST ARTWORK PERMANENTLY DISPLAYED IN THE NEW IDA CROWN JEWISH ACADEMY MATH SCIENCE MOSAIC MURAL PROJECT ICJA geometry and art students completed an incredible mosaic first semester that is now displayed permanently in the math and science commons area. The project is the first of its kind for our school, reflecting our educational push to work more collaboratively between subjects and incorporate project based learning (PBL) into the curriculum. Sophomores in Mrs. Pederson’s, Mr. Keller’s and Ms. Kelly’s classes worked collaboratively throughout the first semester with Chicago mosaic artist Chris Zonta to create the school’s first work of art to be hung at the new campus.

The project was spearheaded by Mrs. Pederson, who thought creating a mosaic project would help her students understand how concepts and practices in art and math are integrated in the real world. It was designed to include art as part of ICJA’s push to integrate STEM learning into our curriculum and is one of many STEM courses and opportunities at ICJA. Chris Zonta and Ms. Kelly worked together to teach students how to develop and draw an intricate symmetrical design using math formulas while considering specific mosaic art elements.

“Origins” is an 8-ft. diameter mosaic mural medallion and represents in visual form the major sciences and a variety of math concepts, while also highlighting the Jewish roots and contemporary approach of this Modern Orthodox Jewish high school. Simply put, it’s Torah u’Maddah represented in art. The colorful mosaic is made of approximately 4000 ceramic, glass, porcelain and handmade tiles. Students learned tile laying techniques, design elements for mosaic and how to use tile nippers. The basic mural design was created by the artist and evolved over time as both students and teachers added their ideas. During the project, students enjoyed immersing themselves in creating their own individual 8 x 8-sq.-in. mosaic pieces.

Chris Zonta has facilitated large scale mosaic projects through her Mural Residency Program to 25 schools in Northern Illinois area since 2004.

ICJA parents of alumni, Barbara Geller, Debbi Geller and Phyllis Muller, were so excited about the project that they actively participated with the students throughout the semester. Often, they stayed with Chris Zonta to work the whole afternoon at ICJA on Tuesdays. ICJA faculty were excited to take the opportunity to glue a piece of tile in the mural as well.

8

“Showing students how the mandala was mathematically constructed and drawn on our substrate was the perfect way to illuminate how math is used in the creation of mosaic art,” says Zonta. “I am thrilled to see these 32 students and some dedicated adult volunteers invest themselves in this very special project. The students gained a solid understanding of the art of mosaic. The mural is colorful, bold and a great reminder of how important math and science are in our world today. I am happy to have worked with all the enthusiastic Ida Crown students and staff,” remarked Zonta. The mosaic project began in September and was installed at the end of the school year. The math/science mosaic mural is a beautiful, bold, artistic and energizing enhancement to Ida Crown Jewish Academy.

On March 26 at the opening of the AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington, D.C., AIPAC recognized one high school – ICJA – for its students’ and advisor’s dedication to Israel advocacy. We are so proud to have been selected as AIPAC’s high school of the year, chosen out of all high schools across the U.S. Congrats to all our student Israel advocates, our alumni–who in their day helped make our Israel advocacy program so strong–and to Ms. Susan Sennett, who has led dozens of students to AIPAC conferences for many years. We are so proud! Eight of our students attended the policy conference with Ms. Sennett and Rabbi Matanky as part of our school’s official delegation. Other students attended the conference with their families as well. The policy conference was the second trip for ICJA students to AIPAC in Washington, D.C. this year. Students joined the Schusterman High School Summit earlier in the year. ICJA students were also invited to a symposium for Midwestern college students at Northwestern. ICJA was the only high school invited to that program. As AIPAC delegates, our students had the opportunity to hear from American, Israeli and Jewish leaders on the current state of American-Israel affairs. They also spent time touring the capitol and meeting with lawmakers to ensure that their voices are heard. Senior Avital Raff says, “It was a really valuable experience to hear from lawmakers about issues that matter to our community.” Senior Ariella Zwelling, who attended the conference for the first time, says, “AIPAC was an amazing experience in which I was able to learn more about Israel and its strong relationship with America. After attending AIPAC, I truly feel more connected to the proIsrael community.”

efforts in memory of their father and grandfather, Sam Gorenstein, a”h. Teaching our students to be passionate and educated Israel advocates is fundamental to our mission. Six ICJA students Three ICJA students attended The AIPAC Midwest College Caucus as the joined the AIPAC only high school invited to attend. Avital Raff, Raphi Chernoff and Schusterman High Akiva Goldberger all joined at Northwestern University with college School Summit, leaders from schools like, Illinois, Indiana, Northwestern, and Ohio State to meet with AIPAC outreach leaders who answered questions concerning a program that the current political environment in the United States and Israel, along with prepares high school students related issues seen on college campuses. to advocate and lobby for Israel in college. In the summit, students learned about the importance of the U.S.-Israel alliance and why it is necessary and beneficial, not only for Israel’s existence, but for America as well. Students also learned how to advocate for Israel on campus and in politics. Senior Roni Bell says, “AIPAC was a really wonderful experience where I got to meet people from across the U.S. who care about the American-Israel alliance and want to help enhance and protect the relationship. We learned how to effectively advocate for Israel through dialogue, debate and engagement and how to be proactive rather than reactive. The convention really opened my eyes to the things that are happening between Israel and the Palestinians, as well as Israel and Iran. In all, this was a very informative and amazing experience.”

We are especially grateful to the Gorenstein family, who support our Israel advocacy

ICJA HONORS HOLOCAUST VICTIMS WITH TEREZIN TREE In honor of Yom HaShoah and Skokie’s celebration of Arbor Day, the Village of Skokie joined ICJA to plant a sapling tree with roots in the Nazi concentration camp, Terezin. The original tree was smuggled into the Czechoslovakia camp in 1943 by a sympathetic guard and then planted on Tu B’Shvat by teacher Irma Lauscher, who held secret classes for her imprisoned students. The group managed to water the tree from their meager rations until it reached 5-ft. at the time of liberation. Today, 600 saplings of that maple tree have been replanted.

It was nurtured by the Chicago Botanic Garden until the Illinois Holocaust Memorial Museum & Education Center was ready to plant it on their new campus. This year, three saplings from that tree were planted on the grounds of Skokie’s three high schools: Niles North, Niles West and ICJA. Attending the ICJA ceremony were Skokie’s Mayor George Van Dusen and Michael Lorge, Skokie Corporation Council. Dede Harris, a docent and board member of the Illinois Holocaust Museum, spoke about the Terezin tree and presented her newly released children’s book on the tree’s story. The book is available at the Museum book store.

One of those saplings was brought to Chicago as a gift for JUF from the Terezin Memorial.

ACES SCOREBOARD

Underdogs Win Tier II The Aces entered the YU Sarachek

basketball tournament like a storm this winter, winning four straight games and earning the Tier II Championship Title. Ranked #16 at the start of the North American day school basketball tournament, the Aces were driven by their sheer determination to win and the support of their incredible fans, including many alumni Aces who came out to support our players.

Lady Aces Last winter, the Lady Aces were selected as WNBA Chicago Sky

2017 “High School Team of the Week.” The Lady Aces received this honor after being nominated for their accomplishments on the court, in the classroom and in the community. The Aces finished second place in the IHSA State Tournament regionals and second place in the Chicagoland Prep Conference tournament. The Varsity Lady Aces have the great privilege of having WNBA experienced player Brittany Peters as an assistant coach. Peters joined the Lady Aces when secondyear coach Burt Levy (‘76) reached out to her in the fall. When Peters heard the coaching offer, she was immediately interested since she wanted to be able to coach a girls’ varsity basketball team, but had not yet found an opportunity that worked. “Having played at such a high level in college and in the WNBA, and under some of the best coaches, I feel like I have so much knowledge and skills to share. I am eager to pass that on to others who enjoy playing the game as much as I did,” she says.

Aces Wrestling In this year’s Wittenberg National Invitational Wrestling

Tournament, the Aces finished in fifth place out of 15 teams. As the team that has won the most times in the long history of the Wittenberg Tournament, ICJA entered the competition with a strong squad. However, ICJA was unable to field a full squad and had no one to compete at four weight classes. Nevertheless, the Aces made their mark on the tournament and reminded all of the other teams in the field that wrestlers from ICJA can never be taken for granted. The Aces wrestlers took fourth place in the IHSA Class A Regional Wrestling Tournament.

Aces Baseball The Aces had a great season and then took third, in the Columbus Baseball

Invitational, remaining the only team in Jewish World Series history to finish in the top three every year. They finished the season 10-6, and over the last nine years, have a record of 84 wins and 35 losses.

Lady Aces Soccer In spite of a cold, rainy spring, the soccer team took second place in the Chicago Prep Conference Tournament, tying Cristo Rey Jesuit High School 2-2, and

then losing in in the penalty kick shootout. Nechama Braun and Lior Pinchot were named to the 1st All-Conference Team, and Marli Gutman and Tova Oliff were selected for the 2nd All-Conference Team.

Aces Cross Country The Aces cross country teams completed an

outstanding season last fall at the Conference meet, hosted by ICJA. The girls’ varsity took first place overall, with Adina Trubnick finishing in first place. The boys varsity finished in second place overall, with Ezra Perlow finishing in first place. In the boys open race, ICJA came in second and in the girls open, ICJA came in first. There were eight schools from the Chicago Prep Conference at the Conference Championship, and 117 total runners ran on our home course at Pooch Park. Most impressively, out of 35 runners, 29 Aces ran a personal record or ran for the first time at this distance. Every girl on varsity set a PR or first at this distance, and six out of seven boys on varsity set a PR or first at this distance!

Best Year Yet for Fencing WITH 21 STUDENTS FIELDING ALL SIX WEAPON SQUADS (MEN’S AND WOMEN’S FOIL, MEN’S AND WOMEN’S EPEE, AND MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SABER), THIS YEAR’S SQUAD WAS THE BIGGEST AND BEST FENCING SQUAD IN IDA CROWN HISTORY. MEETS INCLUDED OPPONENTS LIKE DEERFIELD, HIGHLAND PARK AND NEW TRIER.

The JV Lady Aces basketball team won its impressive fourth consecutive Chicago Prep Conference Title.

YEAR IN REVIEW 2016-17 JERUSALEM SCIENCE CONTEST

Junior Tamar Dallal was one of only five winners of this year’s Jerusalem Science Contest. Some 95 students from across the country participated in the prestigious contest. Tamar visited Israel with the other winners in May as part of the program. The topic for this school year was astronomy.

YEHUDI HATOV AWARD DOZENS OF STUDENTS WERE RECOGNIZED AT THIS SPRING’S TORAH AWARDS, INCLUDING SENIOR SARAH RUSSMAN, RECIPIENT OF THE JASON LERNER A”H MEMORIAL YEHUDI HATOV AWARD. THE YEHUDI HATOV IS AWARDED TO ONE SENIOR WHO IS DEDICATED TO TORAH EXCELLENCE, MIDDOT AND CHESED AND IS SELECTED BY HIS OR HER PEERS AND STAFF.

CHARLOTTE’S WEB RANKED IN TOP 8 IN STATE Charlotte’s Web, ICJA’s

Literary Magazine 2016 has placed in the top eight among high school literary magazines in Illinois! Recommended for the Highest Award, a category second only to the top award, which went to only two winners, our school’s literary magazine competed in a field of almost 400 other schools of all sizes. Congratulations to last year’s editors Shoham Benmelech, Tamara Soleymani, and Brocha Shanes and all who worked so hard to produce our outstanding magazine! Congrats to faculty advisor, Mrs. Arons. Many thanks to the Susan and Joseph Ament Endowment Foundation that annually supports the Charlotte’s Web publication. Read the magazine online at icja.org (see QR code). What’s perhaps most astounding about the high rank of our literary magazine is that the contest is not divided by school size, which means that our small student body competed with some of the largest schools in the nation. Congrats to everyone involved, including the writers, poets, artists, photographers and graphic designers. No doubt this year’s issue of Charlotte’s Web will rank in the competition as well.

SPECIAL GEMARA SHIUR Rabbi Robinson’s honors Gemara shiur is always a highlight of his students’ high school experience; this year, however, that course was significantly more meaningful. As Rabbi Robinson spent much of second semester recuperating from medical procedures, the Torah learning with his talmidim never waivered. The boys traveled to wherever their Rebbe was, holding shiur in the hospital, in a rehab center and in Rabbi Robinson’s home. No doubt his students gained the real meaning of dedication to Torah study. Senior Sam Bellows says, “Learning with Rabbi Robinson this year really showed me the importance of Torah learning and emunah in Hashem no matter what the circumstances.” When we posted a photo to Facebook of one shiur in the hospital, one alum, Rabbi Gidon Shoshan commented: I’ll never forget our visits with Mori v’Rabi, Rabbi Juzint ztz”l when he was in the hospital. The nurses at Evanston Hospital were so moved by the outpouring of love and respect that Academy students showed our Rebbe, and the sheer numbers that came to a Melave Malka at his bedside. Thank you to the Academy past and present for its outstanding rabbeim. Our lives are forever impacted by their Torah, guidance and love.

NIGHT SEDER

ICJA students this year joined a night seder that took place monthly at school in the evenings throughout the year. Speakers included Rabbi Reiss, Av Beit Din, Rabbi Karesh, from NCSY, and Mrs. Wolkenfeld from ICJA, who offered students extra Talmud and Jewish studies learning, especially in preparation for holidays. Dozens of students joined each session, and alumni even joined one with Rabbi Matanky.

SENIOR FEATURED FOR GLASS BLOWING

ICJA senior Joey Silverstein was featured in the Chicago Tribune both as a wrestler and as an incredibly talented glass blower. He manages to link the two talents, saying, “I see parallels in that both (wrestling and glassblowing) involve (proper) technique. In wrestling, my coaches always stress technique and there are so many intricacies people don’t see. In glassblowing, it’s definitely about technique. You can be artistic and have a great idea, but if you don’t (use the right technique), it can be destroyed in half a second and you can be left with nothing.”

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TUTORING In our first full school year at our new Skokie location, ICJA students reached out to our next door neighbor to the north, the Middleton Elementary School, to tutor students on a weekly basis. The student-led initiative began when ICJA senior Ethan Lewis wanted to take advantage of ICJA’s proximity to the Skokie public school by launching a tutoring system between the two schools. Twenty ICJA students spent Thursday lunch periods tutoring children at Middleton, focusing on a wide variety of subjects for students up to fifth grade. Some students helped out with math and science homework while others joined a drama class to assist the teacher. Two to three ICJA students were assigned to one classroom, and each week they returned to that same room so that the Middleton students got to know their ICJA tutors.

RAISING TZEDEKAH

WHEN WILDFIRES IN ISRAEL DESTROYED HOMES IN NEVE TZUF, ICJA STUDENTS CAME TOGETHER WITH BNEI AKIVA TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THE COMMUNITY. STUDENTS ARRANGED FOR THE MILT’S TRUCK TO VISIT ICJA DURING LUNCH ONE DAY AND AGAIN TO DELIVER SHABBAT PACKAGES. WHETHER IT’S NCSY, BNEI AKIVA OR C-TEEN, ICJA STUDENTS ARE ACTIVE LEADERS THROUGHOUT ALL THE YOUTH GROUPS.

COACH SAVES OPPONENT’S LIFE The Aces JV basketball team enjoyed

LITERATURE AWARD FOURTEEN JUNIORS IN MRS. KAHAN’S CLASS WERE SELECTED AS FINALISTS, SEMIFINALISTS OR HONORABLE MENTION IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE CONTEST. THE READING AND WRITING CONTEST FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 4-12, ASKS STUDENTS TO WRITE TO AN AUTHOR ABOUT HOW A BOOK AFFECTED THEM PERSONALLY. LETTERS ARE JUDGED ON STATE AND NATIONAL LEVELS. ICJA STUDENTS IN MRS. KAHAN’S CLASS ARE RECOGNIZED EACH YEAR.

LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE Seven sophomore students from the Academy were selected to join the Illinois Holocaust Museum’s Leadership Day Conference. ICJA students represented the only Jewish day school present at the conference for high schools from all over Chicago and the suburbs to learn about the Holocaust and social justice. Miki Schreiber, ICJA parent and board member and a docent at the museum who was at the program, says, “It is very important for a Jewish high school to participate in these types of programs. In 1948, post Holocaust, when the UN declared and promised “never again” the intention was to protect all humanity from genocide...It is important to show that as a Jewish school we take that promise seriously and we will join in to preserve rights for all humanity.”

a happy ending to an emergency incident in January when a player from an opposing team had to be revived on the court. ICJA parent and coach Steven Greenberg was able to resuscitate Lutheran North College Prep player, Maleek Allen. The incident was reported in USA Today, the Forward, CBS and on NBC Chicago news. We are incredibly grateful that Coach Greenberg was present at the game and knew what to do at the right time. With the assistance of ICJA parent, Elisha Rosenblum who ran to get the AED, Coach Greenberg was able to use the training he received as an ICJA coach to successfully resuscitate the young man. Students and staff dedicated learning to the player’s refuah shleimah after the incident. We purchased two more AED machines for the building, and staff and coaches participated in a life-saving seminar so that more people are trained in CPR and the AED machine. We hope that the news of what happened at ICJA encourages more schools and institutions to be prepared for an emergency, and we hope to never have to use our training again. Once he recovered, Luther North College Prep player Maleek Allen visited ICJA, along with his mother, to meet with the JV team. Steven Greenberg and Elisha Rosenblum were there to greet Maleek, along with the ICJA boys. Maleek even took a moment to pose with Greenberg, Rosenblum, Rabbi Matanky and Mr. Harris in front of the AED machine that saved his life. Coach Greenberg was recognized by Governor Rauner just prior to Pesach, when he joined the Governor at a model seder.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Alumni in Israel Every year we are proud to send over 80 percent of our senior class to spend a gap year (or two!) in Israel.

Many of these alumni go on to join the IDF, attend college in Israel or make aliyah. Some ICJA alumni classes have so many alumni in Israel, that class reunions are held there in addition to in Chicago! So often, we hear from these alumni that their Academy education was pivotal in deepening their love for Israel. We are proud to raise generations of Modern Orthodox Zionist alumni. We take great pride in our alumni who make the brave and selfless choice of serving in the IDF. Congrats to alum Maxwel Brasch (‘15, pictured at top right), who was inducted into the IDF this year, with his Academy family by his side to celebrate. Naomi Greenberg (‘13, pictured at middle right) was among 300 rescuers, assisted by dogs from the “Oketz” Unit, who worked at the scene of a parking garage that collapsed in Tel Aviv in search for three missing people. Pictured is Naomi with Prime Minister Netanyahu. On the day of her release from army service in Israel, alum Rachel Russman (‘13, pictured at right) posted an incredible message on Facebook. She says, “I learned how to keep going when everything was going against me, how to stay true to myself when the system forces you to be become like everyone else, that sometimes you only realize what’s really important to you once it’s being taken away and that I really am mizrachit on the inside.”

Class of 1976 reunion in Israel

Class of 1978 reunion in Israel Siyum for a classmate

Over 60 friends of Batsheva Stadlan a”h (‘16) joined a siyum in Israel, hosted by the Academy. Rabbi Matanky began with words of comfort to the students, and praise for their efforts to remember Batsheva through Torah. Ben Kaplan (‘16) led the siyum followed by Rabbi Engel of Or Torah, who also addressed the students.

Class of 2006 reunion at ICJA 16

The event was held in the historic Weizmann Hall of the Jewish Agency Buildng in Jerusalem.

From Secondary School to Primary Sources

ICJA alum and historian Rabbi Dr. Zev Eleff (‘03) released his fifth and sixth books last summer: a revised form of his dissertation published by Oxford University Press, Who Rules the Synagogue? Religious Authority and the Formation of American Judaism, and an anthology, Modern Orthodox Judaism: A Documentary History. The latter was released by the Jewish Publication Society. If that sounds prolific for a young alum, that’s because it is. For Eleff, who now serves as chief academic officer of Hebrew Theological College, he credits his success to teachers, beginning in high school and until now, as well as his ability to seek guidance. “I’ve always been ambitious, but I have always known when and how to ask for help from mentors, family and friends.” Rabbi Dr. Eleff gave a guest lecture to students of Ms. Beth Kirshner this year at ICJA about his book on Modern Orthodoxy. He provided additional fascinating insights about his compilation and writing of the text before introducing the course’s final chapter of study. Rabbi Eleff gave each student a copy of the book to keep for themselves, and he charged them to continue thinking about, and take an active part in, the future of Modern Orthodoxy.

Finding That First Job Alum Eliana Block (‘12, pictured at right) is working as a researcher in

the investigative unit of Washington, D.C. ‘s local CBS-affiliate station, her first job after graduating from the University of Maryland. She wrote in a charming post on her blog, Collegedox, on the process of landing a first job--one that followed 72 rejection letters. She says, “I’m telling you everything Facebook users try to hide. Because after every rejection letter, or worse, no response, something died in me. Landing your first job is no small feat, it takes an encouraging support system, a tireless spirit, firm self conviction and a seven month supply of mint ice cream.”

Alum Works to Bring Filtered Water in Uganda

When we claim our alumni are making an impact all around the world, we mean it. Michale Goldberger (’11) wrote to us from Uganda this year, where she is working as the marketing manager for a social enterprise called SPOUTS. SPOUTS was founded by two Harvard grads in 2011 to help bring clean water to the Ugandan population. In Uganda, even the richest people in the country do not have clean piped water to their houses, as there is contamination in the piping. Most people simply drink water out of the sewers or from contaminated bodies of water. About 60 percent of Ugandans boil this water to purify it, which is a costly and time-consuming process. SPOUTS manufactures and distributes ceramic water filters, which is a simple and cheap technology that can help households clean their water. Goldberger says, “We currently work with many partners across Uganda, including UNHCR, Save the Children, BRAC, and FINCA, with over 200 retail locations. My role is to strengthen our relationship with our partners to support them in making sales. I mostly work directly with our partners, helping troubleshoot problems they are experiencing. These can range from lack of product knowledge to difficulty in transporting the product to customer distrust of the filter. I am also formalizing our company’s training program and working on other marketing campaigns, such as a campaign to encourage everyone at our partner organizations to personally purchase a filter. It has been an incredible experience to live in and learn from a different society. In addition to working at SPOUTS, I’ve been very involved in the local Jewish community, the Abayudaya tribe. While most of the Jews live in Eastern Uganda, there is a small population of students and young workers living near me. I have had the opportunity to share much of my Jewish knowledge with the shul, and I even teach Hebrew 1-2 times each week.” So many Academy graduates are working to enrich their communities, near and far, and we are so grateful when we get to hear about it. We are collecting Academy stories for our 75 years of Academy HiSTORY. If you have an Academy Story to share, please email icjanews@icja.org.

WE SURPASSED OUR GOAL!

The development team and lay leadership set out to achieve an unprecedented campaign goal in the same year as our capital campaign dedication. Thanks to a dedicated group effort, we are thrilled to have surpassed that goal, just prior to the annual campaign close on June 30. In total, the Academy family raised $1,187,356 for the ICJA Scholarship Fund – the second time the campaign has ever topped $1 million. Scholarship Funds assist more than 66 percent of our student body, ensuring the continuation of our founders’ mission that no Jewish child should be denied a Jewish education. As we work tirelessly to prepare our students to thrive in the modern world, both as Jews and as contributing members of society, we are so grateful to the many donors who enable us to accomplish that mission. The highlight of our fundraising efforts was, of course, our annual dinner in March, where nearly 400 Academy supporters joined us to pay tribute to our esteemed honorees (at right).

DR. EDWARD A. CROWN SCHOLARSHIP DINNER More than 400 alumni, community members, staff and parents joined our annual Dr. Edward A. Crown Scholarship Dinner on Feb. 22 at our new building in Skokie. We are so grateful to the support of the Academy family for placing ads, purchasing raffle tickets and auction prizes, and for coming to support ICJA at our beautiful dinner.

Rabbi Menachem Goldberger ( ‘76) presented the Alumni of the Year Award to good friends and classmates Julie (‘76) and George Lennon (‘76).

We depend on the participation and support of parents, alumni and friends in our effort to provide the best possible opportunities for our students. We thank all those contributors who helped us reach our annual campaign goal.

Alison Molotsky (‘76) presented an award to Dr. Ed Kaplan and family, establishing the Dr. Tammy Kaplan College Guidance Program. Dr. Tammy Kaplan a”h, a class of ‘76 alum was deeply missed at the dinner she attended every year as an ICJA parent and board member. Julie and Steve Grant (pictured at right) were presented with the Parents of the Year Award. Danielle Gershon (‘04) and Alyssa Appel (‘04) presented the Educator of the Year Award to Ms. Susan Sennett.

YOU ARE ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL EDUCATORS I HAVE HAD AT ICJA AND BEYOND. THANK YOU FOR PASSING ALONG YOUR PASSION FOR EUROPEAN HISTORY AND ART HISTORY TO ME, FOR ALWAYS BEING AVAILABLE TO YOUR STUDENTS AND FOR TEACHING ME HOW TO THINK CRITICALLY. YOU HAVE LEFT A LASTING IMPRESSION.

HEEREY SCHOLARSHIPS

Middle class families with multiple children in day school in some ways feel the “financial squeeze” of day school tuition more than any other group. These families often do not qualify for tuition scholarships yet struggle to meet their financial obligation. The Bernard Heerey Family Foundation Scholarship was established to meet the needs of these middle income families. Scholarships can finance as much as full tuition for families who meet these requirements.

There is no doubt that the lessons our grandparents teach their children and grandchildren form the foundation of their lives as Jewish teenagers. It is thanks to their dedication to their families that our students are able to thrive as committed Jewish young adults. We pay tribute to our grandparents annually at our Grandparents Day, when we invite them to join us at the Academy for one morning that includes a student and staff presentation, a panel discussion, a tour and refreshments. We are so grateful to the grandparents who joined us for this year’s event and are especially grateful to those who contributed to our Grandparents Giving Circle by making a gift to our annual campaign.
