Inspiring bnei & bnot Torah to thrive in the modern world

A

Dear Academy Friends and Supporters: Seventy years ago, the Academy opened its doors for the very first time with just 42 students in grades 7, 8 and 9. Since then, more than 4000 students have graduated from our school—recipients of an outstanding Jewish and general education. We were then, and we continue to be today, dedicated to preparing young men and women for a life of Torah and contribution to society as our vision statement heralds: “Inspiring bnei and bnot Torah to thrive in the modern world.” Yet, as we remain true to the vision of our founders, we continue to innovate and find ways to be more effective and more inspiring. It is therefore my pleasure to present you with our first annual report, highlighting many of the milestones of this past school year. Join us in the nachas of knowing that our students are prepared for the next stage of life—scoring on par or above some of the most competitive schools in the areas of math, science, English and history. Learn about the accomplishments of our students in Judaic studies, of the more than 80 percent who are

continuing their studies in Israel, and those who have won major academic competitions, from Talmud to the Intel Science Talent Search. Our teachers continue to find news ways to touch the hearts, minds and souls of our children. We are so proud of the work they have done to revise the Tanach, math and science curriculum and look forward to their continued experimentation with “blended learning,” differentiated instruction and research-based teaching. They are the finest faculty in Chicago, and it is my privilege to work alongside them. Behind so much that is important and influential in our school, is our strategic plan. Developed in partnership with our lay leadership, this plan has helped us set our sights high and plan for the future. Whether in the areas of professional faculty, student achievement, curriculum or development, the Academy is recognized nationally for our commitment to excellence and growth. Thank you for partnering with us as we educate the next generation of Jewish leaders. Your continued support is not only gratifying, but has been essential to the success of our school and the education of our children. B’virkat HaTorah,

Rabbi Leonard A. Matanky, Ph.D. (ICJA class of ‘76)

From athletics to academics, this past year at Ida Crown Jewish Academy was one of astounding growth and achievement.

Reflections from 2011-2012 In academics, our students’ accomplishments rival or exceed those of any college-preparatory school in the nation. To name just a few notable achievements:

• 6 students were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program: 1 national merit scholar, 2 finalists, 3 commended • 21 seniors were Illinois State Scholars • 26 students passed the Jerusalem Exam, an advanced test of Hebrew and Jewish knowledge

• 1 senior was a semi-finalist in The Intel Science Talent Search, the nation’s most prestigious pre-college science competition

• 1student took second place in the international Ulpaniada girls math competition in Jerusalem

• 40 candidates from Illinois in the 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program

• 7 students in Honors’ Talmud placed in the top 10 spots in Yeshiva University’s national girls’ Bekiut competition, with 2 tying for 1st

In athletics, our teams were recognized locally and nationally as formidable competitors. Against all odds, the varsity boys’ wrestling team and the varsity girls’ basketball team became Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Regional Champions in the same week. This is the first time in the school’s history that any team won the regional championship game and likely the first time that any Jewish day school took that title twice in the same season (Read more about athletics on page 6). And nationally—whether through AIPAC, Panim el Panim, Write On For Israel or Model UN—our students were recognized for their character and commitment to community. Add to these accomplishments all the personal achievements attained by every student at ICJA throughout the year: the first moment that a student from a public school understands a Rashi; an “A” on a math test from a student in our peer mentoring program; a solo in the girls’ choir from a student who never sang in public; a few words coaxed from the mouth a Keshet buddy; and the first goal from a freshman on the girls’ soccer team.

While the challenge of creating an outstanding dual curriculum is great, the success of our graduates proves that our faculty and administration have been more than successful. Countless alumni both in our formal alumni survey and informally have noted that heading to college after four years of rigorous academics from early in the morning

Students prepared for college until nearly 6PM at night has made them uniquely prepared to manage their time and courses in university. More than that, among a national movement of concern over whether high school students are prepared for college, Ida Crown Jewish Academy is ahead of the curve in ensuring that our students leave with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed. Over the last four years, our math department has implemented the ACT’s QualityCore instructional improvement program, designed to ensure that the outcomes of math courses are aligned with essential postsecondary skills. QualityCore provides research-based educational resources to shape rigorous course content and improve outcomes.

In science, students in biology, chemistry and physics have followed a QualityCore curriculum for the past three years. Both the math and science spring final exams are QualityCore exams. “We have synced our instruction with what colleges say a rigorous college-prep education should be,” says Dr. Jeremy Kahan, assistant principal of curriculum and instruction. The new curriculum allows faculty and administration to track overall student improvement each year. The final exam scores in both math and the sciences have improved from year to year among ICJA students. Additionally, the administration tracks each individual student’s progress through the standardized Explore, PLAN and ACT exams. Results from those exams have repeatedly shown that ICJA Phenomenal AP Results students are improving their scores Academy students took 116 Advanced individually, while students who Placement tests in 11 different subjects this enter high school behind grade level past spring. Their results were on par with the in college preparedness are able to top high schools in the nation. professional faculty

Academy faculty have always participated in professional development programming, but through On the Mark!, the I C JA S t rat eg i c P l a n fo r 2 1 C e n t u r y L e a r n i n g programming is more standardized and focused than ever. Newer While every institution proudly touts its successes, at Ida Crown Jewish Academy we teachers, who have worked at the Academy for five years or less have the data to signify our achievements and inform us of areas of concern. have an assigned mentor who collaborates with them. More experienced teachers On the Mark! ICJA’s Strategic Plan for 21st Century Learning, now in its third year, has develop specific, attainable goals for each school year with their department chair, made an impact in every facet of school life--from curriculum to finances. Following and periodic meetings ensure that these goals are met. Teachers also meet in teams to are some of the areas we have focused on for the 2011-2012 school year. pursue professional growth together. st

Student Achievement

This year graduating seniors participated in a thorough exit interview with Rabbi Louis Fliegelman, director of guidance. Students gave feedback on the guidance program and insights on college readiness in order to identify key strengths and areas of improvement for future students. Rabbi Fliegelman has also developed a matrix of Jewish life at colleges to which our students apply, informing parents of programs, davening and kosher food service available. Over 80 percent of our seniors chose schools that meet our benchmarks of having a strong Jewish life. Additionally, Rabbi Matanky was a key leader in an initiative between North American Jewish high schools and schools in Israel (pictured above). This year, dozens of representatives from American high schools and Israel programs met in Israel for a conference focusing on improving communication between the schools and increasing enrollment of American high school students in Israel programs. (Read more about how we are better preparing students for college on page 4-5.)

curriculum

Each year On the Mark! focuses on two subjects for curriculum development. We have partnered with outside consultants and faculty leaders to improve subjects areas based on field standards. Past subjects have included math, tefillah, Tanach and science. We will further develop the science curriculum and also focus on the Nach curriculum during the upcoming year. Last year after three years of aligning the ICJA math curriculum with the ACT Quality Core standards, math department faculty condensed course levels to assure that more Academy students are on track for college math. We are pleaseed to announce that the Quality Core test results, taken at the end of the 2011-2012 school year as the final exam, show significant gains in the number of students who are at or above national standards for college readiness. 100

stakeholder surveys

As part of On the Mark!, we regularly survey our stakeholders, using both Measuring Success, LLC, an independent company who administers the survey to day schools participating in a PEJE (Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education) initiative and Yeshiva University. Surveys this past year included: Our second parent survey A faculty survey An alumni survey of graduates from 1999-2009 A student survey Some results from the parent survey are at right. (Peer school statistics are provided by Measuring Success. From finances to curriculum, the On the Mark! ICJA’s Strategic Plan for 21st Century Learning is guiding ICJA’s community to further the mission of academic excellence for all students. Consulting funding for the plan is provided by a joint grant from the Institute for University School Partnership of the Center for the Jewish Future of Yeshiva University and PEJE (Partner for Excellence in Jewish Education). This year in sports was unprecedented for ICJA! Two varsity athletic teams, the wrestling team and the varsity girls’ basketball team, both won the regional championship title. Both teams’ achievement is especially impressive, considering the rigorous double curriculum the athletes complete, limiting the amount of time they spend training. The wrestling win comes five years after IHSA officials agreed to schedule the regional competition on Saturday night so that the Academy could compete. The varsity wrestlers also won the YU Henry Wittenberg Wrestling Invitational for the 8th time, scoring more points than any team in tournament history. Adding to these accomplishments were other exciting seasons among numerous Aces athletic teams. Tennis and fencing were added to our already impressive roster of teams, and nascent teams like soccer, cross country and baseball all continued to strengthen the Aces’ reputation in the Chicago-area high school sports arena.

Academy Alumni

Reunions More than 50 people gathered at Shallots Bistro for the ICJA Class of 2002 reunion in June. The alumni had a chance to catch up with friends from around the country and ICJA staff. Thanks to chairs Michael Shiner and Tamara Ashman for a great program. Every year ICJA organizes a 10 year and 25 year reunion for our alumni. We’re looking forward to next year’s class of 2003 and class of 1987 reunions, with dates to be determined. For information about class reunions, contact Jane Best at jbest@icja.org.

This year, through the efforts of our board and parent leadership teams, we’re proud to report we exceeded our campaign goal of $836,000. In addition, in 2011 we began to review all areas of fiscal responsibility in the Yeshiva University Benchmarking and Financial Reengineering Project, which is in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago. We were pleased to discover that we meet or surpass nearly all national benchmarks for school expenses. However both our annual and alumni campaigns still have room to improve. As a result, we are working with experts in the field and are in the final stages of developing a three-year plan for increased revenue growth.

program and extracurricular opportunities. ICJA depends upon the participation and support of parents, alumni and friends in our effort to provide the best possible opportunities for our students. Your participation in our ICJA@70 annual campaign enables us to continue to provide direct scholarship assistance to families who cannot afford full tuition and fulfilling our mission that no Jewish child should be denied the opportunity to receive a Jewish education. This year over 50 percent of our students are receiving assistance. Donations received from July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013 will count toward our goal of $878,500 for the annual campaign. We are striving towards 100 percent parent participation for the 2012-2013 annual campaign, demonstrating that ICJA is supported by a strong, unified and committed parent body. With your support, we can reach this goal. Gifts of any size make an impact.

IDA CROWN JEWISH ACADEMY

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN Building

for Excellence

Seven decades ago, the Chicago Jewish Academy—as ICJA was then called—became the first day school west of the Hudson River, combining Jewish and general studies curriculum. Today, moving our school to Skokie to a much-needed state-ofthe-art facility, requires the same vision and commitment from the Jewish community as it did 70 years ago. Since our founding, we have provided our students with the tools for success in a rigorous college preparatory environment, with access to a full range of academic, religious, athletic and social activities, all within a warm and nurturing community. With a new facility, we will be able to better meet the needs of our modern education program by providing more classrooms, cutting-edge science and technology facilities and expanded amenities for extracurricular activities. The new campus will include outdoor space, sports facilities, space for cultural arts, expanded library and technology resources, study halls, expanded kollel and chavruta learning spaces, an auditorium, workout facilities, student and faculty lounges, a central Beit Knesset that can accommodate the entire school and an enhanced facility for Keshet. We have raised $22 million to date and are continuing to progress with our campaign. Although our ultimate goal is $31 million, we can break ground once we reach the $28 million mark. We are closer than ever to realizing the dream of a new state-of-the-art facility for our students.

We thank you for being among the visionaries of our community’s future by contributing to ICJA’s Building Campaign. Your gift helps us achieve a once-in-ageneration goal of building a contemporary high school for our community and strengthens ICJA’s endowment to guaranty the scholarship and financial needs of future generations. This dream would not be a reality without the help of the Jewish Federation and our lead donor, the Crown/Goodman Family. Many thanks to all of those involved in this tremendous effort.
