The Arts Portraits of Pastoralism Cat Urbigkit March 2014 Campbell County Rockpile Museum

Portraits of Pastoralism is a 20-image traveling public art exhibit of Cat Urbigkit’s black-and-white photographs of pastoralists around the globe, illuminating the challenges faced by people whose cultures involve the seasonal movement with livestock herds (transhumance). This educational art exhibit allows the public to see the faces of the pastoralists and their animals, from cattle and sheep producers on the public rangelands in the American West, to goat herders in Spain, and women milking their yaks in Mongolia. It will help the public to understand that a cowboy on horseback in Wyoming is conducting the same activity as the Lesotho cattle boy, and the same holds true for various people and cultures throughout the globe. The exhibit will help the American public understand the vital importance of these seasonal movements of people and livestock, and the threats to continuing this practice. Urbigkit’s goal is to promote public support for maintaining this sustainable use of natural resources, while recognizing and treasuring the human value of a close association with the land. Global transhumance is a constant thread of Urbigkit’s non-fiction nature book, Shepherds of Coyote Rocks: Public Lands, Private Herds and the Natural World, released in October 2012 by The Countryman Press, a division of W.W. Norton, and this exhibit provides a visual affirmation of the book’s theme. The exhibit features photos from four continents, and is set to include images of pastoralists from the American West, Africa, Nepal, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Spain, Bulgaria, and Turkey. The exhibit is a celebration of humanity, with diversity from around the globe.

Since 1984, Kevin and Cindy Spencer have been spreading the word about using magic tricks as a healing tool for the physically challenged through a special program called “Healing of Magic.” The Spencers don’t claim to have originated the idea to use magic as a tool in rehabilitation medicine, but they have greatly expanded upon the concept. And through their efforts, new treatment modalities are being explored and used to effectively improve the everyday skills of people who have experienced strokes, accidents, spinal cord or head injuries, learning or developmental disabilities, visual deficits, psycho-social disorders, those who have problems with alcohol or other drug abuse, and many other diagnoses. The Spencers continue to redefine “magic” for a new generation of spectators, delivering a larger-than-life sense of wonder to their audience! For more information, visit www.spencersmagic.com. http://www.alpinhong.com It’s a classical music versus rock-n-roll showdown. Classical pianist, Alpin Hong, plays technical sonatas like 300 year old rock and roll hits. He grabs a single note and thrusts it into hyper-drive. He is fluid. Impassioned. Tender. Electric. Poetic. Formally trained as a Master at the Julliard School of Music, Hong flaunts technical prowess on even the most strenuous pieces. Watch Alpin battle note for note with Crushed Out, an explosive hit of surf-garage momentum and rock and roll form Brooklyn, New York, consisting of Frank Hoier on guitar and vocals and Moselle Spiller on drums. Formally known as Boom Chick and local favorites at Donkey Creek Festival, Crushed Out is pure guitar-drum adrenalin rush- plenty of fuzz, tremolo, riffs, slide and Black Sabbath power chords.

TRIVIA QUESTION:

Wacky IRS Laws

When is the first day of Spring, and what is the other name for that day?

One: Under the right circumstances, clown suits, clarinet lessons, and appearance-enhancing oils & surgery can be deducted. Wayne Hauck Journeyman Lineman, Schulte, T.A.

“The first day of Spring is warm and another name for Spring is coil.”

Two: The IRS will accept taxes on products that aren’t exactly…eh-hem…legal.

Three: There is something known as the “Starving Artist” deduction, but many rules apply, of course.

Four: There is a tax on arrows that are longer than 18” and are used with a specific type of bow with a Deb Wigner League Manager, Black Hills Novelty

“Spring falls on April 21st and there is something about a Spring Equinox. Of course, Spring is later here in Wyoming.”

specific amount of draw. Children’s wooden arrows are exempt.

FIVE: If you loan money to someone (a legitimate loan) and they don’t pay you back, you may be able to write it off.

SIX: If you donate your home (and land) to a fire department to be burned down for training exercise, Buddy Langone Owner, Kustom Budz

you might be able to write off the loss.

“The First Day of Spring is on March 20th and it is also known as the Spring Equinox.”

LAST ISSUE’S TRIVIA Q & A:

Why is it said that men are from Mars and women are from Venus? And what is Cupid’s connection with this? In Greek mythology, the God of war was Ares (Roman name: Mars). The God of love was Aphrodite (Roman name: Venus). These two had several sons including Eros (Roman name: Cupid). Congratulations, Amy! You had the correct answer!
