I

t’s impossible not to fall in love with our cover star, Liz McClarnon. Maybe it’s the Northerner in her. Or her self deprecation and need to please. Or maybe it’s just that she’s a thoroughly nice girl who doesn’t take herself too seriously and is utterly charming. Whatever it is, we’re hooked. And you will be too. This issue we’ve also met some charming characters

from the Tees Valley business community. We caught up with Mike Matthews - as HRH Prince Andrew officially opened the new Nifco UK plant in Teesside - to discover how he makes it work (p28), and Simon Turner, president of Huntsman’s Pigments Division to find out how the company is settling in to its new home at Wynyard Park (p24). Over lunch at Rockliffe Hall, Nicola Short the newly appointed executive director of The Entrepreneurs’ Forum told us of her vision to support businesses in the Tees Valley (p34) and we met neW talent, Bryan Bunn, to talk about life as a fledgling entrepreneur (p15). W BRINGS YOU THE NEWS FROM THE NORTH’S LEADING BUSINESS VILLAGE, WYNYARD PARK Offices snapped up on booming business park

Royal opening of £8.5m car factory

Nifco UK to Expand its Workforce After Move is Complete Car parts manufacturer, Nifco UK, has been given the royal seal of approval after the Duke of York opened its new £8.5m factory. The business, which has an annual turnover of £38m, has been based at its Yarm Road factory since 1967 but has now begun a phased move into the new state-of-the-art Stockton plant after Prince Andrew officially opened the new facility. The Duke of York, who supports UK businesses in the changing economic environment, was taken on a tour of the current factory, before travelling to the new Eaglescliffe plant to see the 130,000 sq ft premises. The relocation will allow the company to fulfil significant new contracts secured within the last year with Honda, Nissan and Jaguar Landrover, as well as exploring new markets. It is expected that Nifco UK will build upon the recruitment drive it started in 2011, taking its team to 300 from the 158 it employed this time last year. Mike Matthews, managing director, Nifco UK, said: “We were absolutely delighted to have the Duke of York officially open our Eaglescliffe factory. The new factory will allow the company to realise its potential and reach even greater heights over the coming months and years.” The factory, at Durham Lane Industrial Estate, was funded by the firm’s Japanese parent company Nifco Inc, and by £1.65m of Regional Growth Fund cash, which last month completed due diligence. 8

The development was then managed by Wynyard Management Consultants. Masaru Onodera, president of Nifco Inc, said: “It is a tremendous honour to see our fantastic new factory officially opened by Prince Andrew. Nifco UK continues to go from strength to strength and the move to Eaglescliffe represents a really exciting step forward for the business. We are sure the relocation to a state-of-the-art factory will allow the team here in the North East to achieve great things in the future.” Nifco UK uses plastic injection mouldings to produce more than 250,000 parts a day, supplying car brands including Nissan, Ford Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Honda and Toyota. The move to the new factory will help Nifco UK to increase its production capacity and tap into the electric vehicles market, producing parts that are suitable for the engines of green vehicles. Stockton Borough Council has worked closely with Nifco UK throughout the planning stages, and helped the business to secure funding. Councillor Bob Cook, leader of Stockton Council, said:

We are delighted to see Nifco UK receive a royal visit to mark the official opening of its new factory. Our work with Nifco demonstrates that the public sector in this region is committed to working alongside the private sector to boost our economy and shows Stockton is a great place for businesses to grow and flourish.

IN BRIEF

Wynyard Park is:

THE NORTH EAST’S PREMIER BUSINESS PARK

It is home to:

OVER 70 BUSINESSES

OVER 1,500 EMPLOYEES

It is currently:

EXPANDING ITS SERVICED OFFICE FACILITIES TO ACCOMMODATE DEMAND

A high quality office complex on Teesside’s leading business park is proving so popular with small firms that it is struggling to keep pace with demand – despite undergoing an expansion. The original 10,000 sq ft serviced office scheme at Wynyard Park is fully let and five of the first six units created as part of its 5,000 sq ft expansion were snapped up in days. More space is now being made available and units can be designed to companies’ own individual specifications. Paul Barber, managing director, Wynyard Park, said: “Following the success of the original serviced office scheme which is full with 12 tenants, it is a fantastic achievement to have let these latest five units so quickly given the state of the economy. “It shows how Wynyard Park has a clear understanding of the region’s current business needs and is able to tailor packages to meet those needs. Further space is coming on stream soon and we would invite companies to get in touch to find out more about how they can benefit.” Companies signing up to the serviced office scheme within Wynyard Park House benefit from a fully inclusive package of support on flexible easy in, easy out terms. Packages comprise all rent, rates, services charges, reception support, furniture, telephone lines and internet connection, and companies have access to a conference area. They can also choose from a service menu that includes administration and concierge services.

Howards bags another award For the third year running, Howards in Stokesley has been included in the new edition of one of the UK’s most important restaurant guides.
Howards is one of the only restaurants in Teesside and North Yorkshire to be recommended by Harden’s 2012 guide. Howards is singled out alongside big names such as London restaurants Scott’s, The Wolseley and J Sheekey and famous chefs including Heston Blumenthal, Michel Roux Jr.

Wynyard Park gets all charged up for Electric Vehicles

neWs in brief.

Tees Valley Now has 76 Quick Charging Points

Wynyard Park is all geared up to welcome electric vehicles after installing a quick charging point, marking another milestone in the North East’s Charge your Car programme. The new charging point is at the entrance to the 700-acre site and is easily accessible from the A19 and A689. It brings the number of quick charging points in Tees Valley to 76. Matt Johnson, development manager, Wynyard Park, said: “This will be of benefit to both site tenants and visitors, whilst also a massive boost for our long-term development plans. Our vision for the site is to create a high-class mixed use sustainable community that includes a hospital, homes and leisure facilities. Environmentally friendly amenities such as this charging point reflect that vision and we are delighted with its installation.” Josey Wardle, project manager for Charge your Car, said: “Wynyard Park is one of the North East’s leading business locations and

is well positioned close to all of the region’s major road links. Additionally, Stockton Council has been a real advocate of Charge your Car since the programme launched, so we were really keen to see a quick charger installed in the south of the region, which will help to plug a gap in the network. “Quick charging points are vital to ensure that EV drivers can make longer journeys around the region and beyond as they charge an EV in under 30 minutes. Charge your Car has therefore placed these points at strategic locations across the North East and has a number of others in the pipeline.” As a result of Charge your Car, the region now boasts the UK’s most comprehensive EV charging point network. The Wynyard Park quick charger can be accessed by Charge your Car members for free and will also be available to visitors to the region as part of the new Pay as you Go network at £5 per charge.

Council unveils blueprint for the future of Hartlepool Document Will Shape the Future of the Town

Hartlepool Council has published the final draft of a major blueprint, which will shape the future of the town. Called the Core Strategy, it sets out the main planning framework for the borough for the next 15 years and has been drawn up following extensive public consultation. The main elements include an allowance for up to 5,400 new homes to be built over the next 15 years; achieving this growth within the existing urban area as well as through a major new residential development to the southwest of the town and a smaller, limited area of new housing at Upper Warren. Also Wynyard has been earmarked for further executive housing and prestigious business developments and Elwick and Hart for small scale housing schemes. In addition, the strategy highlights the need to create green spaces across the borough, including Golden Flatts and in the new residential development in the south west

and the retention of the green areas, which provide a strategic gap between the town and Hart and Greatham; to promote tourism and leisure developments; to develop policies to protect and enhance the town centre area and to support the creation of an innovation and skills quarter; and to promote the port, Oakesway Industrial Estate and the Southern Business Zone, recognising the town’s new Enterprise Zones and safeguarding land for a new nuclear power station. Hartlepool Mayor Stuart Drummond said: “The Core Strategy will play a key role in how our town grows and develops over the next 15 years, so I am delighted that we had such an excellent response from local people to the various rounds of consultation which we held. It is vital to plan properly and thoroughly for the future and we have developed a detailed planning framework, which is both practical and aspires to the very best for our town in the years ahead.”

North East firms urged to think Indian A high profile delegation from the UKIndia Business Council (UKIBC) visited the region recently to urge companies to explore business opportunities on the sub-continent. The UKIBC is the premier business-led organisation supporting the Government in the promotion of trade and investment between the two countries. The aim is to increase trade between the UK and India through business-to-business dialogue and create and sustain an environment in which free trade and investment flourishes. India is a key emerging market for the North East and since the beginning of 2008, there has been a 40 per cent increase in exports to Asia and Oceana from regional firms.

Semta success from UK Employer Investment Fund Skills council Semta, has won all three bids it made to the UK Employer Investment Fund. The funding will be used to kick-start sustainable skills improvements in the strategically vital science, engineering and manufacturing sectors. The three work streams will focus on supply chain companies and SMEs to increase and improve investment in their existing workforce skills and in new talent through the recruitment of apprentices and graduates. Semta research shows the need to recruit and train 96,300 engineers, scientists and technologists by 2016 and to enhance the skills of 363,000 technicians who are currently qualified below world-class standards. The first pot of funding will be used to improve the productivity and competitiveness of supply chain companies; the second will increase the number of SMEs who recruit an apprentice from 11 per cent to 20 per cent by 2016; and the third will increase the number of SMEs who recruit a science, technology, engineering and mathematics graduate by improving employer-university links.

Stockton Council backs apprenticeships drive Stockton Council has pledged to increase the number of apprenticeship opportunities it offers. The local authority already provides apprenticeship placements in areas such as civil engineering, business administration, human resources, catering and horticulture. The council is also exploring the possibility of introducing apprenticeships in ICT, marketing, youth work, teaching assistants and care work. W Spring 2012

Wynyard welcomes Elliott Group

Evolution called in to help with revolutionary tax system changes

Company Plans to Double the Size of its Business

An international company which provides support to the oil, gas, refining and petrochemicals industries has moved to Wynyard Park as part of a strategy to double the size of its business. Elliott Group has vacated premises in Stockton and re-located to a high quality 1,200 sq ft office within the Teesside business park’s Evolution complex. From there, four members of staff co-ordinate the work of a team of field service engineers. The company, which has its headquarters in Pennsylvania in the United States, designs, manufactures and services a range of turbo machinery and is renowned for its quality, efficiency and reliability. Its team of Teesside-based engineers serves a range of customers locally and in Aberdeen, including high profile

companies such as BP, Shell, Nexon Oil, Marathon Oil and Talisman Energy. The company also has premises in Reading, Berkshire. Matt Johnson, development manager, Wynyard Park, said: “I am delighted to be able to welcome an international company of Elliott Group’s stature. It further demonstrates how a combination of high quality premises and support services allied to our great location close to the A19 and A1 is enabling us to continue attracting new businesses despite the tough economic times.

Ahead of sweeping changes to the tax system, a North East accountancy firm has been called in by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to help lay the foundations for the impending introduction of new legislation. Under the new Real Time Information (RTI) PAYE system, employers could soon face financial penalties if they do not comply with strict new guidelines on submitting PAYE and NIC information to HMRC. Business and tax advisory firm Evolution LLP, which is located at Wynyard Park, has been enlisted by HMRC as one of just 100 medium-sized employers in the UK to take part in a pilot of the scheme before it is launched nationally. It is expected that, from April 2013, it will be mandatory for all employers to submit their PAYE and NIC information online to HMRC for every pay period, whether that is weekly, fortnightly or monthly. This will signal an end to manual submissions of information to HMRC. As well as assisting with the pilot, Evolution LLP has also adapted its services to help clients of all sizes to comply with the RTI system when it comes into play, allowing them to sidestep the threat of potential fines.

We would invite other companies that might be considering re-location or expansion to get in touch with our team to find out how we can help.

HSBC supports growth of Fine Organics Business Turned Around with Support from Bank

A manufacturing company based on Teesside is targeting further expansion thanks to the financial backing of HSBC. Fine Organics at Seal Sands in Billingham has grown year on year since it was the subject of a management buy-out led by managing director, Keith Hanson, in 2008. At that time the business, which manufactures fine chemicals for the pharmaceutical, crop protection and speciality chemicals sectors, was loss making but Keith believed with an ambitious team in place it could be turned around. Key to that was having the right financial support in place and after a thorough process to appoint a bank, which, as Keith says, “could think outside of the box as we wanted to”, HSBC was brought on board. Keith said: “When we undertook the management buy-out we effectively lost our bank, which was our parent company and also had to spend a considerable period stabilising the business. We knew we wanted to grow so we had a bit of a beauty parade with the banks to see who could support our ambitious plans and who reflected our vision and values and could fully support our strategic approach. HSBC was by far the best and since we made the appointment nine months ago they’ve been fantastic. They are helping us turn the business 10

around and now we’re looking at plans for growth in the future, which include taking Fine Organics from a current £28m turnover business to £70m within the next five years.” Since the management buy-out, Fine Organics has generated profits of £1.6m and has also been restructured creating a new holding company, Fine Industries Limited. Grahame Maddison is area commercial director for HSBC and is based in the bank’s Middlesbrough office. He said:

We are committed to supporting regional businesses with their growth plans by essentially helping them access the financial assistance they need. We remove the obstacles which are often in the way and we’re really pleased to have been able to help Keith and his team turn Fine Organics around to the successful business it is today. “While many businesses believe that access to lending is currently restricted we would like to reassure the business community that we are open for business and our lending figures in the region are strong. We’d encourage anyone looking for a progressive and strategic banking partner to get in touch with our team.”

John Warren ABP expansion plans unveiled The North East’s leading animal byproduct and food waste collection and disposal service provider has announced expansion plans after a successful 2011. John Warren ABP has worked with agricultural clients across the region for over three generations and is now seeking to establish a major presence in North Yorkshire and Lancashire. The move into new markets comes after a successful 12 months, which saw the company increase its client base by six per cent.. Antony Warren, director, John Warren ABP, said: “We had a successful 2011 which saw us expand into new key markets and our client base increase significantly. The challenge for us now is to ensure we build on that and that’s why we are working towards growing the business across North Yorkshire and Lancashire. We believe the quality and cost of services we offer to our current clients will appeal to farmers further afield and are excited at the opportunities this presents to us.”

J & B waste deal has impact Partnership Formed to Reduce Landfill Waste

A partnership with a North East recycling firm is helping one of the world’s leading software companies in its aim to achieve zero waste to landfill. J & B Recycling has been awarded the contract to manage all waste from Sage UK’s headquarters at North Park in Newcastle. The deal was struck after staff at Sage UK inquired about better ways to recycle thousands of disposable drinking cups used at the premises. J & B Recycling, based in Hartlepool, now operates weekly collections of a variety of waste streams including comingled recyclables and general waste from Sage UK for processing, recovery and recycling at its Material Recycling Facility (MRF). Vikki Jackson-Smith, managing director, J & B Recycling, said: “We are delighted to be working with Sage UK because they are such

a respected company across the world. They have a clear commitment to reducing landfill and our processes ensure that target is met.” J & B Recycling recycles approximately 100,000 tonnes of waste each year from household, commercial, industrial and construction sources. Jane Pettitt, Property and Service Contracts coordinator at Sage UK, said:

J&B Recycling was a refreshing change from our other waste contractors, as they came in with not only money saving ideas but they also re-energised us to think more widely on the approach to general waste and recycling. We have also reduced costs dramatically and that’s no mean feat when you consider we have over 1,600 people working here.

Wynyard Park Welcomes Driver Global Company the Latest to Move onto Business Park

Global construction consultancy, Driver Group plc, is the latest company to move onto Teesside’s leading business park. It has taken a 2,500 sq ft office suite within Wynyard Park’s Evolution complex after vacating premises in Yarm. Martin Woodall, managing director, project services, said: “We really only started developing our Teesside operation around two years ago and since then we have gone from a standing start with two or three people to employing over 25 people out of the office.” Driver uses its extensive in-house technical knowledge and wealth of experience in planning and project management to provide a comprehensive integrated service to a wide range of clients in the construction and engineering sectors. Mr Woodall added: “Wynyard Park is considered to be a regional

business park, as opposed to a local business park so that was an obvious appeal. It is right on the A19 and very close to the A1 so that means we have got a North East office just 35 miles from Newcastle. Our new premises also bring us closer to potential customers on Wynyard Park. The office is very modern which supports our aim of creating a pleasant workplace for all who are based here and the support facilities are also second to none.” Chris Musgrave, chief executive, Wynyard Park, said: “We are delighted to welcome a company of Driver’s stature. It’s a real vote of confidence when companies recognise what we are trying to achieve at Wynyard Park. The site is much more than just a business park – we want people who work here to feel like they belong to a community and are part of something special.”

Tees Valley will receive £5.6m of Government funding to fuel local infrastructure projects. The Growing Places fund has been allocated through Local Enterprise Partnerships to ensure the one-off capital investment is sustainable and delivers projects that will generate further re-investment down the line. Linda Edworthy, director of Policy and Strategy at Tees Valley Unlimited, said: “This is a significant cash injection for the area and we are delighted that it has been made available to help realise several exciting projects under discussion. Establishing successful infrastructure is key to unlocking strong economic growth. It attracts private investment, opens up new markets and creates further job opportunities for people in the area.”

Shopper numbers rocket at Middleton Grange A North East shopping centre is enjoying renewed success after a flagship store opened its doors. Customer footfall rocketed by 15 per cent at Middleton Grange Shopping Centre in Hartlepool after BHS launched its flagship 35,000 sq ft department store at the end of January. The arrival of BHS follows a £3m programme of improvements made by Middleton Grange’s owners, The Premium Property Group Limited (PPG), which has included improvements to car parks, signage, the new glazed shop-front for BHS and refurbishment of the centre’s toilets. Further internal improvements are planned for later this year.

Tees Valley is one of the first centres for offshore renewable engineering Tees Valley has been named as one of the first five Centres for Offshore Renewable Engineering (COREs), partnerships between central and local government and Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs). The COREs are part of the Government’s plan to attract major new private sector investment into the country and ensure businesses looking to invest in manufacturing for the offshore renewables industry receive the most comprehensive support possible. Tees Valley has several sites offering ideal space and facilities for the offshore wind industry. Two are designated Enterprise Zone sites, which benefit from a range of incentives including Enhanced Capital Allowances, Business Rate Relief and a simplified planning regime. W Spring 2012

Q

“How has the rise of mobile devices and operating systems affected companies’ IT philosophies in the last three years?” C Ridley, business owner

OUR PANEL

NFU Mutual Claire Sedgewick Agent, Sedgefield

Little Red Door Paul Morris Lead Developer

Sandler Training Andy McLaughlin Managing Director

Paul Morris: Hardware devices such as the BlackBerry, iPhone and iPad have made working anywhere, at any time, a real option, and coupled with operating systems including iOS and Android there are real benefits in information sharing and availability. IT departments have found themselves able to furnish staff, especially those based in the field, with devices such as Smartphones and tablets that show a real increase in productivity, whilst reducing capital outlay on static hardware such as desk based PCs. Besides the improvements in IT hardware and software management, mobile devices and operating systems have also proved to be advantageous in certain areas, offering an entirely new channel of marketing and revenue for businesses. An often-overlooked advantage of the rise in popularity of these devices is the ready built delivery and payment infrastructure put in place by organisations such as Apple and Google. The App Store and Android Marketplace have a global reach of millions of users, most of whom have their personal payment details on record. This means that consumers have placed their trust in the system and are willing to spend, especially on low value impulse buy transactions. Small to medium businesses are already starting to realise how having a presence in these marketplaces can help them to advertise, increase brand awareness, connect them more personally to their customers, and provide a direct revenue stream with payment handling already taken care of. Q

“A recent survey showed that the number of SMEs trading without insurance rose from eight per cent in June 2011 to 20 per cent in December 2011. As a new business that subcontracts elements of our work what insurances am I legally required to hold?”

L Cook, new business owner Claire Sedgewick: Rather than just looking at what is legally required, you should look at which insurance policies best suit the risks of your business. Subcontracting work to others is just one example where it can pay to look beyond just what is legally necessary. Some insurances are compulsory. For instance, there’s a hefty fine for any business without an employers’ liability policy. This insurance will enable you to meet the cost of compensation for your employees’ injuries or illness in the course of the business whether they are caused on or off site.

W brings you the sharpest advice for all the latest burning issues. Investment, legal, corporate, financial and commercial... we’ve got it covered...

Public liability insurance is different. It covers you for claims made against you by members of the public or other businesses, but not for claims by employees. Subcontracting work to others who have insufficient insurance can have a significant impact on your business. If a contractor does the work and a loss occurs, you and your insurer may have to pay for the loss. For this reason, you should always request a certificate of insurance from every subcontractor you hire prior to each project. Once you’ve taken advice as to which policies provide the most suitable cover for your business, you should turn your attention to those who are subcontracted. A subcontractor with inadequate insurance could cost you your business, your reputation, or both. For advice: nfumutual.co.uk/sedgefield

Q

“We are looking at launching a formal training programme across our business and I am considering a series of MBA scholarships. What other training and support should we be looking to provide. We have approximately 100 staff working in a professional industry.”

J Wilson, accountant Andy McLaughlin: You may want to consider the additional benefits during training and development. Whatever we do, whenever we interact with the world, we do so through our attitude, behaviour and technique. As managers, we must get to know our people well enough to be conscious of how these three dimensions work and how they may affect the performance of our people. Attitude can often be controlled and directed, but that requires people to explore the roots of their attitudes, and then take positive steps to banish negative feelings by focusing on the positive. Attitude towards our self, the company and the marketplace influences behaviour and productivity. A positive attitude moves us towards positive results. Attitude therefore affects our behaviour. Behaviour is developed through our goals, plans and actions. We need to master our behaviour by being consistent in our approach. Encourage your people to repeat positive behaviour until it becomes habit. Technique can be mastered more easily than behaviour, through training, observation, practice and mentoring. Moreover it can compensate for poor attitude, but only to a very minor degree. A bad attitude and inconsistent behaviour will torpedo even the most polished technique. If you focus on attaining a positive attitude, repeatable, systematic behaviour; and consistent, professional technique, then over time you can ensure success. A

local law firm which has been based in the Tees Valley for more than 170 years has launched a service support programme to strengthen its links with the region’s business community. Tilly Bailey & Irvine Solicitors has offices at Wynyard Park, Stockton, Hartlepool and Barnard Castle and currently employs almost 200 people. Eleven specialist partners and a large team of solicitors and administrative staff support managing partner, John Hall. They provide a wide range of services to business clients in areas such as corporate law, commercial property law, commercial disputes and intellectual property law, and to private clients for matters concerning clinical negligence, family law and personal injury. Now the firm, which can trace its roots back to 1841 and was formed from the amalgamation of Webb, Bailey and Irvine and Temperley, Tilly and Hayward, is offering businesses across the Tees Valley a 10 per cent discount on its probate, family and conveyancing services in a bid to strengthen relationships. Victoria Moreton, a partner with the firm who heads up Tilly Bailey & Irvine’s family department based at Wynyard’s Evolution offices, said: “We are really keen to build on the relationships we’ve formed with the local business community and at a recent networking event we held with key players from a variety of sectors, the feedback we got was that a discount scheme for 14

employees would be a popular addition to our portfolio. “From that, we visited a number of businesses in the area to see if they’d support us by promoting the discount to their staff and the response has been really positive. “We appreciate that the current economy is still going through a tough time and remains challenging and unpredictable, so incentives such as this are great, both for the businesses and their employees. For Tilly bailey & Irvine it means we’re able to strengthen our links with the business community whilst for their workers they get access to our services but at a considerably discounted rate.” The discount scheme is open to any business and already a number of Hartlepool firms have signed up. Victoria, who has worked for the firm for over 10 years and lives in Tees Valley, added: “It’s so important for us as an employer with our roots firmly in the region to support our business base. So we’re hoping this discount scheme proves popular and if it does we’d be really keen to look at other ways in which we can strengthen relationships with the business community.” Tilly Bailey & Irvine are recent winners of the One North East award for Business in Sport presented at The Northern Echo’s Local Heroes awards at Hardwick Hall. The award recognised the firm’s commitment to supporting grass roots sport and businesses in local communities. The firm also supports the regional business community through its sponsorship of the prize for the service sector at the annual Hartlepool Business Awards and regularly fundraises for local charities.

Who was your inspiration? My inspiration has definitely been the mentors I’ve worked with over the years. They saw things in me that I didn’t, which helped me grow in confidence so I was able to continuously progress. They showed me that I was capable of doing what they were doing and as a result I succeeded.

Bryan Bunn, managing director, Nortech Solutions.

E

ntrepreneur Bryan Bunn, launched engineering design and management support company Nortech Solutions 12 months ago after becoming disillusioned with his senior role at one of the region’s leading engineering firms. Based at Wynyard Park, the business employs 18 people and has a turnover of around £1m. The 49-year-old married father of three, who lives in Wolviston Village, chats to W about the challenges of being his own boss and his plans for the future. Tell us about your business? We provide professional engineering design and project management services to clients in the oil and gas, chemicals and petrochemicals, energy, iron and steel industries. There are 18 members of staff – we started with four a year ago – including engineering designers, technical engineers, civil and structural engineers and administration staff, and we are currently recruiting to expand the team further. What are your long-term plans as the business grows? The first 12 months have been successful for us, so for me it’s about building on that to really establish ourselves in the marketplace. I want us to be respected in the region for the quality service and personal touch we provide to our customers. That is so important for me, as in my last job I really stopped believing and if I didn’t believe, how could I expect my customers to? What was the driving force behind you starting your own business? All my life I’ve worked in the engineering industry, both at home and overseas, and from starting out at the bottom at the age of 16, I worked my way up to general manager with the company I was employed by before I started Nortech Solutions. By that point I really did live and breathe the big company philosophy, but I gradually became disillusioned and felt like I didn’t buy into what I was offering. I’m a man who stands by his word; if I say I’m going to do something I want to be able to see it through. I was aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the region’s engineering base and felt there was a gap in the market for a genuine SME, an independent company that could provide a personalised and tailored service, and so I started looking into the possibility of launching my own business.

How did you take the business from concept stage to launch? Once I’d given some thought to launching my own business, I started working on a strategy, which eventually became my business plan. For me, to really make the planning process work, I had to detach myself from the process and treat it as an individual project so that’s exactly what I did. Over the years I’d built up some really good relationships with key players in the sector so I called on their help to develop the business plan, helping me identify what grant assistance was available and where I could locate the business. Once the plan was fully developed and I found our premises here at Wynyard Park, Nortech Solutions officially launched and we’re now at the end of our first full year of trading. What about the help and support you received? One of the key challenges for any business is cash flow and that’s why it’s so important to have the backing of a bank that has the vision to support growth. I was lucky enough to meet Peter Harvey from HSBC through my role with the Tees Valley Engineering Partnership and we started talking about my plans. He offered me advice and I was really impressed with what I heard and found his support so invaluable. Unfortunately because of the timing of launching my business, other than a contribution towards my legal fees I really struggled to get any real public sector support because there just wasn’t the money available. But actually, now I’m a year down the line and after such a successful start, it’s good to know we didn’t need it. What challenges or issues have you faced since launching the business? Strange as this sounds our biggest challenge has been dealing with how quickly the business has grown. When I launched Nortech Solutions I had a three year business plan but the goals I set in that time have already been reached. Obviously that’s great – it just means I need to re-assess where we need to be and how we get there. Do you have any regrets or is there anything you would have done differently? No not really, as the first year has gone so well. I suppose if I could say anything it would be that if I’d known our growth would be so rapid I’d have revised my goals somewhat. But generally I’m really happy with how everything has gone and am excited about the future. What advice would you give to people thinking of becoming an entrepreneur? I would recommend to anyone thinking of going it alone to go for it. Have confidence and self-belief that you can do it. I would always rather be able to look back and know I gave something a go and it failed, rather than not being brave enough to try it in the first place. Being brave has got me to where I am today and thankfully things have gone well. I’d also say that perseverance is equally important. I left school with no real qualifications but hard work saw me progress, and 10 years ago I decided to complete an MBA degree part time while I was working. It was hard as my son Josef was still a baby, but it just felt like the right time for me. Overall I’d say if you don’t get what you want first time around, try again. W Spring 2012

A Winning

They say a smile is worth a thousand words, but for the three partners at Teesside’s Queensway Dental Clinic a smile has been worth so much more, providing them with a winning formula for success. Partners Paul Averley, Ian Lane and Uzma Olbrich talk to Jennifer Tate about their achievements and dedication to the industry.

P

ioneering is a word often over used, but seldom is the term as justified as when referring to Queensway Dental Clinic and the accomplishments of the three partners and their 100-strong team. Queensway has helped revolutionise the dental industry, and all from its sprawling practice in the heart of Billingham. Dr. Paul Averley took over Queensway, a small clinic in 1994, just four years after gaining his qualification. Now 18 years on, Paul has taken on two partners, Ian Lane and Uzma Olbrich, to form a team that is both passionate and joyful about their work, yet unassuming when it comes to their significant accomplishments. “Our success is never something we have shouted about, for us it is all about the patients and making sure their needs are met to the highest standard,” Paul says. And the patients have always been at the heart of Queensway since senior partner, Paul, took over the practice. For him people will always come first, whilst the business success is merely a by-product. “The secret to our success is simple; we have always focussed on patients, putting them at the heart of health related decisions and ensuring they get the best service possible. The clinic and our team have been put together to ensure we have the facilities and expertise to deliver a full range of dental services. We have a strong prevention agenda. Through careful assessment, planning and shared decisions with our patients we are able to provide care that is both needed and desired. From the simplest procedure to the most complex problems we are able to bring together the right team to deliver the right dental care.” THIS ETHOS HAS ENSURED THAT MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC are keen to become a Queensway patient. Unfortunately Queensway is presently unable to accept any more NHS patients, except via referral from other dentists, however patients can still join privately. With 30,000 of their own patients, in addition to the 18,000 referred from other dentists, it is a wonder they can manage the ever increasing demand. “There aren’t many dental clinics in the UK, 18

Paul Averley never mind in the region, doing what we do at this level,” Uzma stresses. “We are one of the largest one-site facilities for dental care in the UK, and that takes some doing. We’ve always ensured we’ve stayed ahead of the curve by introducing a range of skills to support and improve oral health, and managing those who need extra or more complex care all under one roof.”A strong forward thinking strategic approach has helped the clinic grow exponentially. Employing only the best staff and specialists in the industry to ensure they continue to provide the best services. “The clinic has grown organically as we’ve added additional services and recognised a need to strengthen other areas. In 2011 alone we invested

making it Work. £200,000 into a new laboratory, as well as the introduction of new treatments including periodontics, endodontics, facial aesthetics and same day dental implants, among others. And this year we’ve already officially opened our new Education Centre, which is designed to cater for a range of lectures and courses which will run throughout the year,” Ian notes. It is this vigorous work ethic and desire to continually learn and expand that has led the team to develop their private offerings, which include cosmetic and specialist dental services not readily available on the NHS. As the private arm of the clinic has grown 30 per cent year on year, it is further proof that Queensway has recognised what the public needs and met those requirements. Ian explains, “the private side of the business is necessary for the clinic’s growth. Unfortunately our contract with the NHS is fixed and therefore a limited resource, so we require a steady stream of private clients to help the business grow, as well as removing an element of uncertainty, which exists with NHS contracts. People will always want healthier, better looking mouths. And for those who can’t achieve it through visiting their regular dentist and the services offered by the NHS through our referral scheme, they can opt for private treatment. It is about the patient choosing how they would like Queensway to look after them. Individuals are treated as such, and their needs are dealt with on a case-by-case basis.” The business has developed somewhat from its humble beginnings as a four-surgery practice in Billingham. Now with a staff of over 100 and occupying various buildings, Queensway has helped regenerate Billingham substantially, bringing in over 150,000 visitors each year to the town centre. “My goal was always to open my own practice in an area that had a high dental need and Teesside overall was in dire need of a good resource to help improve oral health for both children and adults. Although there is a long way to go I’m pleased with the way Billingham Town Centre has developed since we first moved here. Along with the Forum we have helped regenerate the area and make it a more appealing place to visit” Paul says. Queensway’s mark on the region is well documented. At the time of the clinic’s revitalisation in 1994, Teesside had a record for seven times the national average of general anaesthetics for dental treatments a year. Now almost two decades on and not only has this figure been significantly reduced, it’s now a quarter under the national average. This dedication to their patients, the people of the North East and the industry in general has not only helped cement their success, but also had a direct affect upon the medical industry as a whole. Uzma explains, “if we weren’t here the hospitals in the region would struggle hugely to keep up with the demand and would need to find a resource for general anaesthesia for approximately 3,000 more patients across Teesside and County Durham. This would ultimately cost the taxpayer a lot more. We’re proud to be able to reduce the dependency on general anaesthesia, as well as helping patients who are anxious.”

Paul and his team’s commitment to sedation and reducing the country’s dependency on general anaesthesia began when he first took over the practice and noticed a high demand for children requiring anxiety management, which then led him and his team to try and change the way services were being delivered. Since 1997, Paul has been involved in establishing conscious sedation services in primary care so that the dependency on general anaesthesia in hospitals is reduced.

How Queensway make it Work… How do you relax?

How did you meet?

Paul: My antidote to work is sailing. I have been doing it for eight years and have sailed around the world, as well as qualifying for the Great Britain Sailing Team. It is my passion. Uzma: I have a three-month old baby so I am currently on maternity, though relaxation is still something that is hard to come by. But when I can I enjoy travelling, cooking and keeping fit. Ian: Balancing home and work life can be tough, but I always make sure I keep up with my exercise. I am taking part in the amateur stage of the Tour De France later in the year so need to keep my fitness levels up by exercising when my children go to bed.

Uzma: Both Ian and myself separately took a General Professional Training Course with Paul and met him there. Ian: Paul had great vision and was genuinely interested in patients and their needs so it wasn’t a difficult decision to follow him.

How do you divide business responsibilities?

How would you describe your style and work ethic?

Ian: We’re very positive about what we do and genuinely really enjoy our work. But really, our ethic is very much focussed on patient centred care and ensuring the patient is involved in shared decision making so we can ultimately make the right decision for them.

Ian: Both Paul and myself are managing partners so have an overseeing role, working with Uzma and the management team to delegate tasks. More specifically I oversee the training, Paul manages the contracting, while Uzma takes care of staff management, appointments and marketing. The roles are shared according to our individual skills sets, it’s very organic. For more information on Queensway Dental Clinic visit queensway.co.uk or call 01642 554667 20

Business editor, Leanne English, talks to Simon Turner, president of Huntsman Pigments, about the challenges of heading up a division of one of the world’s leading chemical companies and how a chance opportunity helped shape his career.

However, he quickly points out his relaxed manner is owing to the fact he’s enjoying a couple of weeks on the ground in the UK, after a planned business trip to New York was cancelled at short notice.

It was on the back of his success in the platinum industry that led to London-born Simon joining Huntsman as a project engineer based in Durban – a role he remembers starting in the same month Nelson Mandela was freed from prison. This was followed by the pivotal period in his life, when he met his wife-to-be Heidi while studying in Cape Town, voted in the first South African elections, became a father to Liam and was offered the chance to move back to the UK in a commercial role with Huntsman. HIGHS and lows AS THE MAN BEHIND NIFCO UK, MIKE MATTHEWS HAS EVERY REASON TO SMILE. BUT AS BUSINESS EDITOR LEANNE ENGLISH FINDS OUT, THE HIGHS OF TODAY COME WITH THEIR FAIR SHARE OF HISTORICAL LOWS.

N

IFCO UK AND THE WORDS “PRIME candidate for closure” certainly don’t go hand in hand. After all, this is the company whose growth has been so significant that it picked up the top two prizes – North East Company of the Year and North East Manufacturer of the Year - at the nebusiness awards, held annually to celebrate the cream of the crop of regional industry. But that’s exactly how the company’s managing director describes it when he talks about the transformation of the Stockton car parts manufacturer. “When I was working as general manager around 10 years ago, the company was in real distress. It was operating at a loss, struggling to retain clients and was a prime candidate for closure. We were in meltdown and had to face the fact that some big decisions needed to be made to try and turn things around. “Our senior management team left and we were forced to lose around 100 members of staff. But in some ways that’s what saved the business. A new Japanese managing director was appointed and I was promoted as his deputy. One of my first jobs was to develop a strategy for the business, which would get us back into the black. I had a massive job on my hands, we all did, but I really believed the business could be successful.” Within six months Mike and the team of around 250 employees had completely turned things around. The business began operating successfully though things were to take another turn for the worse when the country was hit by the global credit crunch. Mike, who is 47 and lives in Darlington with his wife Alison, daughters Amy, 15, and Lucy, 13, and Lakeland terriers, Daisy and Barney remembers “when the credit crunch hit, we saw a 75 per cent reduction in orders and once again we were forced to reduce our workforce. But rather than dwell on the negatives, I felt this gave the sales team the ideal opportunity to get out there to visit existing and potential customers. By the end of 2008 Nifco UK had enjoyed its best year ever in terms of new

I never thought I’d end up here when I started out all those years ago and that’s what employers need to think about. There are talented people in this region who are moving elsewhere because there aren’t sufficient employment opportunities for them here and I want to and believe we can, change that.”

business development. So you could say that by reducing aspects of the business, we actually grew it.” NIFCO UK, WHICH MAKES INJECTION MOULDING PLASTIC parts for some of the world’s leading automotive specialists including Nissan, Honda, Toyota and Ford, is in the process of moving into a new £8.5m factory in Eaglecliffe after outgrowing its Yarm Road facility, which was home for more than 50 years. The move comes as Nifco UK was announced as one of the winning entries in the Government’s Regional Growth Fund, having secured a £1.65m grant to create up to 130 new jobs. So, from loss making to recording sales of £18m and overall turnover in excess of £30m in 2011, it seems the transformation for Nifco UK is complete. While Mike isn’t one to rest on his laurels and continues to target growth for the business, including operating in a greener, more energy efficient manner and pursuing opportunities within the electric vehicle sector, he believes there are are two major challenges to be tackled regionally which would help businesses like Nifco UK become greater competitors nationally and internationally. The first is geographical. “It’s the three rivers problem isn’t it. This region is so segmented because rivers separate it. You have Teesside, Wearside and Tyneside rather than one larger area. And when you think of how small the North East is, we’re making the fight to be heard that much harder than it needs to be. We’ve got to be joined up in our approach and pull together to attract the big investment and projects.

“Just take Hitachi for example. This is a massive opportunity for our region and its supply chain and we have to approach it in that way. Rather than thinking it’s something for one individual area in the North East, which we have been guilty of doing in the past. Collectively we are stronger and I’d really like to see us to tackle opportunities in this way. “The second key challenge I believe needs addressing is the North East’s skills shortage and the lack of opportunities within growing businesses for apprentices. Unfortunately this is backed up by quite startling statistics, which show 85 per cent of regional employers don’t take on apprentices or graduates. But it’s these people who really can make a difference. Just look at me. I started out as an apprentice with Elta Plastics, which was bought by Nifco UK, and now I’m the company’s managing director. “I never thought I’d end up here when I started out all those years ago and that’s what employers need to think about. There are talented people in this region who are moving elsewhere because there aren’t sufficient employment opportunities for them here and I want to and believe we can, change that.” THERE’S NO DOUBT MIKE CARES PASSIONATELY ABOUT NIFCO UK and the North East. His priority now is to ensure his counterparts; organisations like Tees Valley Unlimited, the North East Local Enterprise Partnership and the North East Chamber of Commerce; and politicians who can influence on the national stage share that passion to bring long-term benefits to our region and in particular the Tees Vally. CAN THE AUDI A5 CABRIOLET COMPETE WITH ITS SLEEK COUNTERPART, THE A5 Coupé? ELIZABETH EDDY PUTS IT THROUGH ITS PACES.

T

here’s nothing like the first rays of soft spring sunshine after a typically bleak British winter. We Brits crave the start of the new season, which ultimately heralds high hopes for the thoughts of breaking the garden furniture out, barbecues… and for those lucky enough, roof-down motoring. The UK remains the second largest market for convertibles in Europe, which is ironic given we’re one of the most sun-starved countries across the continent. However, as we head into spring and the skies are seemingly clear and pretty bright we decided to try our luck and took the Audi A5 Cabriolet S Line SE for a spin. The 2.0 TDI engine is standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, while the turbo-charged 3.2 gets a continuously variable multitronic transmission and there’s also a diesel seven-speed auto option. As a devoted Audi driver, I found the driving experience easy and the ride is fantastic - it really is as smooth as butter - with virtually no wobble to suggest you are effectively sat in a moving box without a lid. To say the handling is all that we have come to expect from Audi: assured and direct, is an understatement and as the model has evolved since its launch in 2009, the steering, throttle and brakes have become more responsive creating a greater connection between the driver and the road. If you want a truly inspired drive though you’ll need to find an additional £12,000 for the S5 Cabriolet, which is a beast with its 2,995cc V6 full of attitude. It keeps its head when you throw it into a corner, has four-wheel drive as standard and a new optional sports differential, which redirects power to the outer rear wheel as you power through a corner. Yet while the model was specified to the hilt 32

with the latest gadgets including real time cameras, bluetooth and built-in sat nav, the technology was at times a little bewildering. But it’s largely the aesthetics of the A5 that appeals to the classic convertible market. That said, the stylish A5 Coupé – which I love – remains the more attractive option as its presence, sleek roofline and strong, chiseled C-pillars have all but disappeared in the creation of the cabriolet. Although the fabric roof of the cabriolet is lighter than a folding hardtop, less complicated to maintain, provides further noise insulation and has more boot space when it’s down you can’t help but wonder if it looks like a slightly heavier A4 Cabriolet. I can’t help thinking that it’s the Keira Knightley of the convertible world: attractive, but not quite the shape you think it should be. However, the fact that you can open or close the roof at speeds of up to 30mph, is worth doing if only to see the look of surprise on the driver’s face behind you, as he watches half the car apparently lifting off in front of him. Inside, the switchgear, materials and basic layout are all familiar and the shoulder-level seat belt mounts, which spring towards you on a lever, as though proffered by a butler remain a nice touch. Once you have taken and secured it, the clasp retracts into the side panel. There’s also an optional hot-air vent by your neck for those typically British cool spring days. Overall, the Audi A5 Cabriolet is a solid offering and a great executive convertible, with many neat touches and only a couple of very minor disappointments. If you are already in love with Audi then it’s definitely worth a look, but don’t be surprised if its sexier sibling the A5 Coupé tempts you first.

Working lunch.

INSPIRING

GROWTH in the North East...

NICOLA SHORT IS CONFIDENT, PASSIONATE AND DRIVEN - IT’S EASY TO SEE WHY SHE WAS THE NUMBER ONE CHOICE FOR THE ROLE OF EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR WITH THE ENTREPRENEURS’ FORUM. LEANNE ENGLISH MET WITH THE HUGELY SUCCESSFUL MARKETING PROFESSIONAL OVER LUNCH TO FIND OUT ABOUT HER RISE THROUGH THE RANKS AND WHY SHEER DETERMINATION AND SELF-BELIEF HAVE HELPED HER ACHIEVE HER AMBITIONS.

I

’D ARRANGED TO MEET NICOLA AT KENNY ATKINSON’S NEW relaxed restaurant, The Brasserie at Rockliffe Hall, on what turned out to be a fairly damp and dreary day. Although the winter conditions we’d experienced in the days leading up to our lunch had passed, the air was still cold and the skies grey. But once inside the luxury hotel, set within a beautiful 18th century estate on the outskirts of Darlington, all thoughts of the Great British weather were soon forgotten. After meeting in the hotel’s reception, we were escorted through to the sumptuous spa and upstairs to the Brasserie, the less formal offering to Kenny Aktinson at the Orangery. After ordering a selection of the kitchen’s freshly baked bread, we settled back into one of the soft leather booths to talk about Nicola’s new role, a position she says is “the right job for me and is shaping up to be one of the best of my career.”

34

Just six months into her role heading up The Entrepreneurs’ Forum in the North East, it’s clear Nicola is relishing it. The 42-year-old mum of four is tasked with growing wealth generation in the region and positioning the North East as the best area for nurturing and developing entrepreneurship. “This is going to be a great job and I’m definitely rising to the challenge of it. I get the best of both worlds as it feels like I’m running my own business, but I’m also part of a passionate, hard working team and exceptional board of directors who all want to do their best to support this region’s entrepreneurs. “The Forum was established because there was a real need to provide a platform for business leaders to come together and talk about the challenges and the opportunities they all faced. It was founded for the good of individuals, for businesses and for the North East. I really want to make a difference and I love the people who are involved in the Forum – there’s a terrific altruistic attitude amongst our members and it’s incredible to watch. “I want people to be inspired to grow their businesses and the Forum provides the ability to learn from the experiences of other entrepreneurs and business leaders. If we’re going to generate wealth in the North East and create more jobs and long-term sustainability, we need to create a thriving business base. To achieve that we need people to have confidence that they can succeed, enable them to create connections with like minded individuals, and provide them with a platform for sharing knowledge that leads to business growth.” It’s apparent that Nicola really believes in The Entrepreneurs’ Forum and the role it can play in the region’s growth. And it’s also clear to see why she was the number one choice for the board, headed up by chairman, Nigel Mills and vice chairman, Lorna Moran MBE. NICOLA’S CAREER SPANS 20 YEARS AND HAS SEEN HER RISE through the ranks in the marketing industry in various high profile regional roles. Smiling, she talks enthusiastically about working for destination marketing agency, NewcastleGateshead Initiative (NGI), which is when she says she became a real ambassador for the North East. “I was so privileged to be appointed into such a senior role with NGI, especially in my mid-30s. After working in the private sector for many years for large corporate companies, I relished the opportunity to join an organisation which was creative and dynamic and one that allowed me to become an ambassador for this region. I loved the five years I had with NGI. We were like one big family, though admittedly a very hard working one.” The job with NGI came about shortly after Nicola gave birth to her daughter. And while many mothers choose to take a career break, she was determined to manage both roles simultaneously. “I had so much ambition and whilst I was committed to being a mother, I was also hungry for a high level job. I wanted a ‘head of’ role and believed I could do it. I can remember thinking ‘I can be a mother and a career woman’. And, through sheer determination, I managed to do both.”

I knew I had another big job in me and I became so passionate about what the forum stood for‌ I really feel like I’ve found myself again.

woman’. And, through sheer determination, I managed to do both.” Nicola was then seconded across to NGI’s sister organisation, 1NG, as head of communications and was tasked with establishing a brand for the regeneration focused public private sector partnership. It was while at 1NG that Nicola met her current husband, Nick – who together with their children are affectionately known to friends and family Nick, Nic and the Nicettes. They married in 2010, the year she turned 40, and shortly after, she decided to take a break from work. NICOLA, WHO LIVES IN WHITLEY BAY WITH NICK, HER DAUGHTER, NICK’S three children and a fish called Boris, took some time out of work to focus on her ‘pet project’ – her house redevelopment – and to spend some time with her family and in the meantime took on ad hoc marketing roles. “It was a reflective time – it enabled me to understand my key strengths and figure our what I really wanted to do.” When Lorna Moran approached her about the executive director’s role with The Entrepreneurs’ Forum, Nicola found she couldn’t pass up the opportunity. “I just knew I had another big job in me and I became so passionate about what the Forum stood for. And here I am. I really feel like with this role I’ve found my own worth and myself again. In fact my husband said to me after I started that he felt like he had the real me back. This is definitely the job for me – I’m loving it.”

he sun is shining, the ground is dry and you’re raring to get back on the green. Yet after months of staring at cold, dank, dreary skies you may find that the spirit is willing, but the body is somewhat lacking. With the first signs of spring it can be tempting to rush back to your favourite course and set off with enthused gusto. But, whether you’re an intermediate or a professional you need to be realistic and accept that your game isn’t going to be the way it was the previous summer, so be prepared for a frustrating start. Instead, hit the driving range to perfect your swing and book a lesson to get a refresher course so you can start the season anew. Work with your instructor, who will help you to understand how to reach your goals, as well as giving you structured direction for improvement. Once you feel you’re ready then it is time to get back into it. The initial swing is always going to be the hardest, so ahead of your game get there earlier in order to warm up. Work slowly to find your rhythm, timing and an efficient rotation in your swing. Play a couple of rounds, evaluate and then develop a plan for improving and enhancing your game. Golf is a learning game, so patience is vital. You may blunder the first shot, but the beauty is

LIZ McCLARNON A Northern

After conquering the pop industry, making her mark on the small screen and charming theatre audiences across the UK, Jennifer Tate talks to Liz McClarnon about her future plans and why nice girls can sometimes finish first.

L

iz McClarnon was catapulted into stardom in 1998 as one third of precocious girl band Atomic Kitten. Almost two decades later and her glowing smile, striking looks and endearing personality have ensured longevity in a notoriously fickle industry. Today, as we meet in the historic Sunderland Empire and she settles into an oversized chair, wearing skinny jeans, minimal make-up, a stylish top and kneelength boots, displaying natural warmth, I can see why Adam Levine of Maroon Five said of her, “if all English girls are like her, we’re moving in.” At just 30 years old, Liz has accomplished what many can only dream of, conquering both the music and TV industry, as well as treading the boards in two high profile theatre productions. And, as an ‘Atomic Kitten’ she helped set the music world alight with the band’s unapologetic brand of pop. As a child of the 90’s I grew up listening to Liz and her fellow Kittens, with many an evening spent singing and dancing along to the catchy lyrics. So with news of a reunion breaking in the press I was keen to learn more about any impending announcement and to find out when to book my front row seat. “While it’s a nice idea, unfortunately the whisperings of an Atomic Kitten reunion are just 52

that, all rumours. We haven’t met to discuss it; the media have simply taken what we might have said the wrong way. Though I wouldn’t rule it out. Never say never.” Thankfully her future success isn’t dependant upon a revival, which so many other yesteryear bands have embarked on as of late. Currently taking a few months respite after a four-week stint over Christmas as Paulette in the stage version of Legally Blonde: The Musical at Sunderland, she has since been inundated with TV and film offers which she is carefully considering. “I have been offered some very interesting TV projects and I would really like to do a soap. I have also been offered a film role. I just love a new challenge, to try something different. I have so many various hats I can put on now.” Liz now finally seems to be shaking off the shackles of being solely known as a pop star, as rave reviews of her performance of Paulette in Legally Blonde: The Musical flood in from the regional press, with the Sunderland Echo saying, “Liz McClarnon was brilliant as down-on-her-luck Paulette, making the audience hold their sides as she delivered classic one-liners and stunning vocals” and the Newcastle Evening Chronicle adding, “her kooky character was a clear winner.”

Word. Performing alongside heavyweights including the legendary Matthew Kelly, Liz has firmly asserted herself as a force to be reckoned with in the theatre world. Playing the world-weary best friend of the show’s lead character, Elle, she had a chance to flex her comedic muscles as the beloved character. “Paulette is my favourite character and such a fun part to play. I really enjoy the comedy aspect; every line is either ditsy or profound, yet people still laugh. I like to describe her as a common version of Elle. To me, it’s not even a proper job, it’s great. People often ask me if I would like to be a chef and my reply is always ‘no, it’s too much like a real job.’” She speaks candidly about her love of her hometown and her Liverpudlian upbringing throughout the interview, and though she has spent the majority of her adult life living out of a suitcase travelling from city to city, her heart still lies with the North. But what of her experiences of the North East in particular? “I love the North East! I have family and friends in Gateshead, so it is very familiar to me. When I get here I tend to just party a lot. I’m from Liverpool so it’s what we do!” Liz explains. “North East crowds are the best, the further up North you go the better the crowds. They’re just more up for it, as my Mam says, ‘If I’m paying money to see something I’m damn well going to enjoy it.’” With someone as tenacious and adaptable as Liz, the next TV offer or theatre audition is always going to be just around the corner but with so much already conquered in her relatively short career, is there a new direction she would like to take or is the path she is currently on where her heart lies? “I forgot just how hard it could be working over Christmas so right now I’m enjoying the break at the moment. I loved every minute of Legally Blonde so I may do more musicals in the future. I definitely have the musical bug.” Her enthusiasm for the theatre is apparent, as her eyes sparkle with delight whilst regaling me with backstage stories and tales of the road. “I have always wanted to be on the stage,” says Liz. “I loved the whole pop career thing when I was younger, but I adore the theatrical element of being on the stage. The reaction is instant which is very important and there is a mutual admiration between the audience and performers. Pop was a lot tougher though, I’m not a fighter nor am I competitive and the media always tried to create a rivalry between us and other girl bands such as the Sugababes and I really didn’t like it.” Though she may not be competitive she is definitely up for a challenge, as she highlighted in 2008 when she swapped her microphone for a ladle as a contestant in the BBC’s Celebrity Masterchef. A self-confessed novice in the kitchen, she stepped out of her comfort zone and into an all-together new terrain. Eventually going on to win the show, she looks back at her time on the cult TV programme. “I didn’t even want to go on but my Mam made me! Eating food has always been a passion of mine, but I wasn’t interested in how the food came together or what ingredients were used, so I found the whole Masterchef experience really hard. I enjoyed it with hindsight, but I think that is only because I won so it was all worth it in the end; it was just a huge release and I think that’s why I cried so much.” It hasn’t always been an easy ride for Liz, with crippling nerves and an overwhelming shyness haunting her throughout her career. While still in secondary school, she was just a normal, shy teenager with a passion for performing. About to head off to study law, when an advert was placed for the latest girl band her singing teacher spotted an opportunity to give the talented Liz a platform to launch her into the public eye. “I was literally dragged to the meeting and I was so scared! But, straight after walking in the manager simply declared, ‘you look good, you’re definitely in the band...I just hope you can sing’. I later discovered Natasha and Kerry were already in the band and luckily it all just clicked. Atomic Kitten was formed, though I remained absolutely petrified.” Beneath the bubbly façade is clearly a driven woman battling against her own demons. “I have always struggled with my confidence. Even 14 years after I first took to the stage I still get

nervous, like on the opening night of Legally Blonde. But, thankfully after I get over my nerves I can now just take it in my stride and enjoy it.” Though brimming with talent, she is modest about her success, instead putting it down to her amiable personality. “What’s my success down to? I just get on with everyone. I’m simply a nice person and that’s good for morale and as a result people like to work with me,” she says. This is a philosophy that she not only follows herself, but also one she encourages others to adopt. “People need to believe in themselves more, but in a positive way. Strive to be the best that you can be but not at the expense of others or hoping that others will fail. Manners are everything. Just look at the X Factor, there are some people who go on thinking they’re the best and are just full of themselves and don’t succeed as a result. Whereas someone like Leona Lewis is just really nice and has had worldwide success. If you can look in the mirror and believe you can do it then you will always succeed and learn in some way.” Liz is someone who bridges both genders and generations; from my male friend with a crush on her going back over a decade, to my Mother who rooted for her on Masterchef, she is both accessible and instantly likeable. And with such a happy-go-lucky attitude and so much already accomplished I wondered if Liz had any regrets, “I have no regrets in my career as there isn’t much I could control.” She laughs, “My only regrets in life are relationships and clothing choices.” And that pretty much sums Liz up. Her refreshingly upbeat take on the world and the obstacles thrown at her, combined with a ferocious tenacity, has confirmed her as a multi-talented star set to shine for a long time to come. You could say she’s literally the kitten that got the cream.

Liz has just completed a successful run playing Paulette in the award winning musical adaptation of Legally Blonde, receiving rave reviews for her performance while at The Sunderland Empire.

What’s hot. BOOKS | TV | FILM | MUSIC | THEATRE | ART

This spring settle down and soak up the season’s best new books... books Life! Death! Prizes! by Stephen May (£11.99) Billy’s mother is dead. He knows that people die every day in ways that are more tragic and random than hers, but for Billy and his younger brother, Oscar, her death in a bungled street robbery is the most random and tragic thing that could possibly have happened to them. The boys’ new world is built out of chaos and fierce love, but as Billy’s obsession with his mother’s missing killer grows he risks losing sight of the one thing that really matters. Poignant and funny, this is a story of grief, resilience and brotherly love.

Diving Belles by Lucy Wood (£11.99) Along Cornwall’s coast, from time to time, the flotsam and jetsam of the past catch in the cross-current of the present and a certain kind of magic floats to the surface. Straying husbands lured into the sea can be fetched back for a fee. Trees can make wishes come true if you know how to wish properly first. Houses creak, fill with water and keep a fretful watch on their inhabitants. Diving Belles is Lucy Wood’s debut collection of stories, hopes, regrets and memories.

Mrs Robinson’s Disgrace – The Private Diary of a Victorian Lady by Kate Summerscale (£16.99) On a winter’s evening in 1850, Isabella Robinson set out for a party in Edinburgh’s New Town at the home of rich widow, Lady Drysdale. Isabella was at once enchanted by Lady Drysdale’s handsome son-in-law, Edward Lane. In a compelling story of romance, fidelity, fantasy and the bounds of privacy, award winning author Kate Summerscale brings to life a frustrated Victorian wife’s longing for passion and learning, companionship and love, in a society clinging to rigid ideas about marriage and female sexuality.

Other People’s Money by Justin Cartwright (£7.99) The venerable private family owned bank of Tubal & Co. is in trouble. It’s not the first time in its three hundred year history but it may well be the last. A sale is under way, and a number of facts need to be hidden, not only from the public but from Tubal’s deeply traditional father, Sir Harry, who is incapacitated in the family villa in Antibes. Great families have all sorts of secrets and Justin Cartwright unwinds them beautifully in this gripping satirical and acutely observed story of class, relationships and the eccentricities and weaknesses of the human condition. 60

The Coincidence Engine by Sam Leith (£7.99) A hurricane sweeps off the Gulf of Mexico and, in Alabama, assembles a passenger jet out of old bean cans. An eccentric mathematician – last heard of investigating the physics of free will and ranting about the devil – vanishes in the French Pyrenees, and the thuggish operatives of a multinational arms conglomerate are closing in on Alex Smart, a harmless Cambridge postgraduate who just wants to propose to his American girlfriend. At the Directorate of the Extremely Improbable, the Red Queen begins to take an interest. What ensues is a chaotic chase across an imaginary America, haunted by madness, murder, mistaken identity and a very large number of unhealthy yet delicious snacks. In writer Leith’s latest offering, the coincidence exists. And it has started to work.

Invisible River by Helena McEwan (£7.99) Evie has left her father and her childhood life in Cornwall to begin a new life at Art School in London. At first the great city provides a world of inspiration and her paintings are filled with colour and fantasy as she begins to escape within it. But this new life is shattered when her alcoholic father arrives and pulls her back into her past. As Evie struggles to carry on, her dreams and nightmares come together on the canvas of her young life and it is her new friends, the city she has fallen in love with and most of all her growing friendship with a talented young sculptor that must hold her together. Helena McEwan’s novel is an evocative reminder of how it truly feels to be young.

If you read only one thing... Lucky Break by Esther Freud (£7.99) It is their first day at Drama Arts and the huddled circle of students – Dan, serious and driven, Nell already convinced that she is going to fail, well-meaning Hattie and careless, glamorous Charlie – is told in no uncertain terms that here, unlike at any other drama school, they will be taught to Act. They will be Trained, not to perform, but to truly Be. But what comes next? Through semi derelict homes, sleazy directors, desperate competition, dreary tours, unobtainable agents, rocky relationships and endless tempting jobs, Esther Freud’s dazzling new novel uncovers a world of ruthless ambition and uncertain alliances.

Transformation W TALKS TO AWARD-WINNING DESIGNER, KELLY HOPPEN MBE ABOUT HER TOP TIPS FOR THE SEASON AND HOW TO TRANSFORM YOUR HOME.

W

ith the housing market stagnating and the property ladder seemingly missing a few steps for those wanting to climb higher, when it comes to our homes many of us are instead looking at ways to re-invent rather than replace. “Although times have changed as people want sustainable and modern luxury, consumers are still holding on to classic and timeless pieces in order to feel a sense of comfort and meaning during these difficult times.” “If you feel you are in a style rut and you want to transform your home, there are ways to do this simply and yet still follow the latest trends whilst retaining your own individual style,” says Kelly. “Colour is so important to give a room a sense of balance and harmony, I would use neutral shades as the base colour on the walls and ceiling and add colour via accessories, curtains and wall art. Splashes of pastel pink, emerald green, Italian grey and burnt orange will be the shades of next season. By injecting layers and texture it will also change the style of the space and give it a more homely feel.” And with her own impressive Barker and Stonehouse range proving extremely popular, Kelly knows how important furniture can be, and how it can help evolve a property on to the next stage of its style reinvention. “I wanted to create a capsule collection that I felt anyone could incorporate into their homes so that every piece melts into the surroundings but at the same time stands out as a star piece. If you want to invest in some key pieces of furniture for the season that reflect the key trends then stylish luggage furniture is currently in, so leather trunks in lighter shades to brighten up rooms, as well as furniture made from reclaimed wood. If the property is a home that you want to keep in the long-term then it is a good idea to invest in some classic pieces and mix it up with modern accessories.” And when it comes to accessories it seems bigger is better, with Kelly predicting that tactile products and prints will have a huge platform this year. “Texture will be a big focus as people place more importance on comfort, so Hungarian and Swedish linen mixed in with silks and velvet, the materials being the complete antithesis of each other.” 70

hether it’s your first holiday as a couple, you’re just married or celebrating an anniversary, then Aitutaki in the Cook Islands is the ideal holiday destination if you’ve got romance on your mind. The island of Aitutaki, or Honeymoon Island, as it is often affectionately referred to, is just one of a number of remote pockets of heaven found at the Cook Islands - but is by far the most superior. An isolated paradise, its aesthetic beauty is awe-inspiring and gives the island a mysterious aura. The exclusive all-bungalow resort is truly unique in so many respects, as well as being the only private island resort on the Cook Islands. Loved up couples can spend hours whiling away their time holding hands watching the sun set each evening on their own desert island, or strolling along the finest white sand which leads to vast crystal clear lagoons. 80

Flights from London return with Air New Zealand from £1,658. A week stay in a Overwater Bungalow at Aitutaki Lagoon Resort & Spa in April starts from £6,052. For more information visit aitutakilagoonresort.com.

Something for nothing: Get up close and personal with the marine life, with a day snorkelling off the shore.

Romantic hideaway Aitutaki

If cabin fever takes hold then escape for a couple of hours by taking the Bishop’s Cruise. A fabulous day can be spent in the waters, listening to the Aitutakians as they regale you with great tales and show their love of song and dance, or simply take in the views as you cast your eyes across the beautiful array of technicolour fish at home in the deep ocean. The Market at Orongo Centre on Saturday is also something that shouldn’t be missed. A hive of activity, with tourists and locals alike battling to find the best deals on sarongs, hats, bags and fresh produce of every variety. You’re sure to be able to find the perfect keepsake and memory here. Come Sunday night there is only one place to go, and that’s the high spirited village of Vaipae, nicknamed Hollywood, where the vibrant performances of the drummers and dancers will have you shimmying in your seats or throwing shapes in the street. And keep a special eye out for the fire dancers, who will set your heart all a-flutter with their logic-defying moves.

ong-haul breaks can be a strain with a family, but choosing the right location can make it all worthwhile, as your children frolic in the warm waters and build budding holiday friendships. Mexico is mostly known for its popular party cities and busy streets, but venturing away from the flashing lights and bars, you come across the picturesque resort of Riviera Maya. Ideal for families, the city is safe and secure with plenty to keep the little ones entertained whilst giving you the perfect opportunity to completely embrace the Mexican way of life and relax for the duration of your stay. To ensure you get the most out of your holiday and this lovely part of the world, you need to book your family into somewhere that can keep everyone in the party entertained. The 5 Diamond Fairmont Mayakoba resort is one of the best resorts in Riviera Maya. The hotel offers a unique travel experience as you can enjoy five different ecosystems; mangrove, tropical forest, lagoons, water canals and coastal dunes, as well as a full-service kids club, which adds more family fun to this luxury resort. For the more adventurous families, the huge cave systems and underground rivers provide a chance to explore and literally get to the heart of Mexico. Try the jet skis or banana boat rides on the ocean, or get your children involved - over 12s are able to learn how to dive too. Get well acquainted with the wildlife and introduce your children to a whole new world at the Sian Ka’an biosphere; a huge nature reserve that was founded to protect the unique wildlife in the area. The flora and fauna is stunning, and includes over 100 species of interesting marine life, as well as deer, possum and jaguars, all interspersed among lagoons, sand dunes and wetland. Mexico is just as beautiful from the sea as it is from the land, and there are plenty of opportunities for you to rent a fishing boat at Puerto Aventuras from the marina, or go to Yal Ku lagoon to swim among the fishes. A Handpicked W’s Elizabeth Eddy retreated to Yorkshire’s Wood Hall Hotel for some R&R not too far away from home.

P

art of the Handpicked group of luxury hotels, Wood Hall is an elegant, hotel nestled into the Yorkshire countryside, yet not half an hour from Leeds. Perched aloft a hill in the pretty village of Linton it has an almost regal aura and its long, winding drive creates a sense of the remote. After a particularly long week, the overnight break was much needed and as the hotel was less than an hour’s drive from Wynyard we were able to check in straight from work just after 6pm. Taking inspiration from the woodland, the rooms and suites are aptly named and we were shown to the sumptuous Oak suite – one of the deluxe rooms - where we were greeted with homemade Parkin and chilled Yorkshire apple juice. While Wood Hall describes itself as a country house hotel, the elegant and rich furnishings in battleship grey, pewter and aubergine sit comfortably with the most modern of touches and latest technology, including oversized flat screen TVs and iPods. Following a walk through the pretty village of Linton and a soak in the tub, it was time for dinner and drinks. We enjoyed our aperitifs in the drawing room, which is at the heart of the building and one of the most beautiful rooms

in Wood Hall with high ceilings and stunning views across the estate. Dinner was served in the Georgian Restaurant, which was intimate and opulent. An amuse bouche of game terrine with a celeriac foam awaited us before we both enjoyed a starter of scallops, cauliflower panna cotta and wild garlic. I then indulged in the halibut with grapefruit and pumpkin tortellini - a quirky yet delicious combination - and my husband sampled the sirloin of local Dexter beef with breaded bone marrow and hand cut chips, which were the best he had eaten in some time. There was no room for dessert but coffee and petit fours rounded the evening off perfectly. While we didn’t have time to indulge in the spa it was tempting and had we not had to head off so early we would have happily. experienced the facilities, which include a pool, spa pool, steam room, gym and a wide range of treatments. I am pleased we didn’t skip breakfast however, as it was a triumph. What made our stay great though was the staff. David in particular was warm, welcoming and exceptionally knowledgeable, making recommendations and catering for dietary requirements discreetly. Even a problem with our hot water was dealt with

Turn Back the Clock

ecapture your youth with the latest in non-surgical facelifts from A Vita Medi-Spa in Yarm. W Magazine reader, 30-year-old Heather Johnson, tries out the treatment and gives us her verdict. “Having two small children my skincare regime is not as thorough as it once was, and the lack of sleep has certainly started to take its toll. So, when W Magazine offered me the opportunity to test out the CACI (Computer Aided Cosmetology Instrument) treatment at A Vita in Yarm, I spotted my chance to refresh and revitalise and took it. As a relatively new procedure in the salon industry my knowledge of it was sparse, and as a result I was a little apprehensive. But, ten minutes in and the soft mood lighting and soothing music left me completely at ease, and after being talked through the treatment in depth I felt my anxiety wane. The procedure took an hour and a half in total and was surprisingly pleasant. The electrical probes at the start were strange but in no way uncomfortable, as it massaged my face paying particular attention to the areas that needed to be targeted more than others. The facemask followed, which felt beautiful and completely hydrated my skin. None of the four steps caused me any discomfort. At the end of the procedure I was handed a mirror and nervously took a glance. I was delighted with the results staring back at me. My forehead was smoother, the area around my mouth tighter and my cheeks lifter and more plump. At the beginning of the treatment I was more than a little dubious about how well it would work and whether the results would be visible. But by the end I was a complete convert, my face looks years younger and I would recommend it to anyone; even my husband couldn’t believe the results!”

The Science Bit… The CACI Ultimate provides four stages to combat ageing and contribute towards a remarkable improvement of the facial contours and complexion: •

BOOTH I get inspired every day. If I don’t, something is usually very wrong...

THE LAST ALBUM YOU LISTENED TO: ‘Off the Wall’ by Michael Jackson on the way home tonight. THE LAST DISH YOU COOKED: Pan fried sirloin steak with garlic and crushed black pepper served with raw spinach. Yum. THE LAST PLACE YOU WENT ON HOLIDAY: A holiday? Wow that’s been a while! But it would be St. Ives a couple of summers ago. We got the last of the blisteringly hot weather in Cornwall and enjoyed every second of it. Something was in the air. THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED: Christmas Day. It was the first one without my mum and when my little girl asked where Granny Mi-Mi was that was it. THE LAST TIME YOU LAUGHED OUT LOUD: When I realised that I was singing along to Michael Jackson on the way home tonight, out loud on the train, and was quite possibly sounding awful. THE LAST TIME YOU INDULGED: Indulged in a naughty way? Whenever I can get away with it! THE LAST PERSON YOU SPOKE TO: Strangely enough I just went for a nice quiet pint with Frank Gardner. THE LAST FILM YOU WATCHED: ‘My Week with Marilyn’. If you haven’t seen it make sure you do. They’re all fabulous in it. THE LAST ADVICE YOU LISTENED TO: Today, getting notes from the choreographer Gary Chryst, whilst rehearsing for my role as Billy Flynn. He asked for a bit more fire! And he’ll get it! THE LAST TIME YOU TOOK TIME FOR YOURSELF: Any time I have spare I spend it with my family. I am about to go away for a year so that’s all I can think about when I get five minutes. I’m going to miss my gorgeous wife and my two little peaches. THE LAST TIME YOU WERE INSPIRED: I get inspired every day. If I don’t something is usually very wrong. I’m grateful to be working as an actor, and playing Billy Flynn in Chicago is a dream job. I am working with some very talented people and watching them on a daily basis inspires me.

‘FABULOUS’: Michelle Williams in ‘My Week With Marilyn’: “If you haven’t seen it make sure you do.”

‘SOMETHING IN THE AIR’: St. Ives: “We got the last of the blisteringly hot weather in Cornwall and enjoyed every second of it.”

Stefan Booth first burst onto our screens as serial heartbreaker, Jamie Nash, in Hollyoaks. He later joined The Bill and Eastenders, as well as reaching the final in the first series of Dancing on Ice. Currently treading the boards as Billy Flynn in Chicago, Stefan looks back at his last moments with Jennifer Tate.

THE LAST THREE PURCHASES YOU MADE: I can quite safely say it would have been food. Come on, I’m a man and we’ve got to eat! THE LAST TIME YOU WERE BACK IN THE NORTH: We were touring with the Dancing on Ice arena tour. What a hoot. I made some real friends for life. W interviewed Stefan while he was performing in Sunderland as part of the nationwide tour of Chicago.

Stefan’s World. ‘LAST DISH YOU COOKED?’: “Pan fried sirloin steak with garlic and crushed black pepper served with raw spinach.”
