neWs... NEW CHIEF FOR WYNYARD PARK LTD Paul Barber announced as Park’s new Managing Director

The region’s leading business park has appointed a new Managing Director, as it prepares to enter an exciting new phase of growth. Wynyard Park has appointed Paul Barber to lead the implementation of its ambitious Masterplan for the site. He will work alongside Chief Executive, Chris Musgrave, and Chairman, Trevor Cartner. The Masterplan will create a highclass mixed-use sustainable community including a new hospital, designed to attract the world’s leading medical science companies, as well as offices, homes, shops and leisure facilities. Paul, who has held previous positions with English Partnerships and Yorkshire Forward, is currently Chief Executive of Strategic Sites the commercial property development company and wholly owned subsidiary of Wynyard Park. He said: “I am delighted to be taking up this new post at such an exciting time. Wynyard Park is currently more than 85 per cent let – a tremendous achievement given the economic climate that we are operating in – but the Masterplan gives us an opportunity to move on to a whole new level and create a flagship

8

development, not only for this region but the whole of the UK.” Wynyard Park Chief Executive Chris Musgrave added: “We have come a long way since we started out in 2005. Since then, we have brought more than £250 million of private investment into Wynyard Park and attracted around 60 companies employing in excess of 1,500 people.

We are now entering a new and exciting phase of growth and I believe that Paul is the ideal person to take us forward, given his extensive experience at a senior level in both the public and private sectors. Paul will also be responsible for developments outside of Wynyard Park, including a proposed Advanced Manufacturing Park on the South-West Iron Masters site in Middlesbrough which it is intended will focus on the future energy sector.

Evolution LLP is celebrating becoming part of a prestigious worldwide network that has the potential to attract international business to the North East. The firm, which has its head office at Wynyard Park is one of only five UK companies to become part of HLB International’s fast growing, dynamic network of independent professional accounting firms and business advisers. The practice will now be the point of contact for all incoming international business covering the North East of England. Evolution LLP underwent rigorous assessments regarding the business culture, quality of work, competence of employees, policies and procedures to join the four other UK firms in the UK federation. Joanne Regan FCA, client partner and head of audit was responsible for this nine-month application to become part of the network. She said: “This is very exciting news for both us and the North East, as we will now be representing the region on a global scale. “HLB International is a network of independent accounting professionals which is represented in over 100 countries. This is a huge benefit when advising our clients as any international interests, currently and in the future, can be catered for in house. If someone needs tax advice about a project in the Middle East or Australia, we can do that. Equally we can advise on incoming business, for example a Russian company looking to set-up in the North East.” Managing Partner of Evolution LLP, Martin Barber, added: “We are delighted to be part of the network. This is an excellent opportunity for us and our clients to grow, and we believe it will give us an edge when offering advice. We are also looking forward to working with the other firms within the network, sharing knowledge and ideas.”

HUNTSMAN SET UP GLOBAL BASE AT WYNYARD Chemical manufacturer to create new global business centre

Chemical company, Huntsman, has moved into new offices and laboratory buildings at Wynyard Pak, where it will create a new global business centre. The Pigments Division of the company has relocated to a 54,000 sq ft high quality building that includes purpose-built offices, creating 31,000 sq ft of innovative new labarotory space for approximately 290 staff previously based at Haverton Hill and Wilton. Huntsman Pigments’ President, Simon Turner, said: “We have a world-class workforce here in the North East that is passionate about our business. The move enables the business to benefit from having our teams in one place so that we can better service our customers, be more effective and efficient and continue to grow. This re-location demonstrates our

continued commitment to the North East where we have operated for many years.” Chris Musgrave, Wynyard Park Chief Executive, added: “We are proud that one of the world’s leading chemical companies has chosen us as the base for the new business centre of its pigments division. “The decision by Huntsman to choose Wynyard Park is further endorsement of our ongoing commitment to provide the perfect environment for businesses of all types and sizes to flourish. Coming on the back of other recent big industrial announcements, including SSI and the former Corus plant at Redcar, Hitachi in Newton Aycliffe and Nifco UK in Stockton, this is further evidence of how the region is spearheading the economic recovery.”

ENGINEERING COMPANY LAUNCHES IN THE NORTH EAST Nortech Solutions aims to create jobs at Wynyard Park Nortech Solutions, an engineering design and project management company has ambitious plans to generate jobs and bring prestige projects to the area. Bryan Bunn, an engineer with extensive experience in the oil and gas, petrochemical, chemical, energy and iron, and steel sectors, founded the company. Nortech Solutions has the necessary level of expertise to secure contracts within the energy, oil and gas, and

iron and steel sectors and is well placed to compete on a global-scale.” He added: “The North East has been chosen as the location for Nortech Solutions’ head office because the energy, steel and process industries form the region’s industrial backbone, allied with the availability of highly skilled and experienced engineers.” Based at Wynyard Park, Nortech Solutions has the capabilities to provide a fully integrated technical service through the life cycle of a project from concept through to completion.

TBI LAUNCH ONLINE WYNYARD PARK BUSINESS DIRECTORY New service aims to promote local businesses

Tilly Bailey & Irvine Solicitors has helped launch an online directory, which brings all its neighbouring businesses together. Working together with the Wynyard Park management team, the leading regional law firm has created the online business directory, wynyardonline.co.uk, giving everyone on site the opportunity to promote their products and services, and identify key local contacts. Martin Levinson, Partner with Tilly Bailey & Irvine Solicitors and head of the Wynyard office, said: “We’ve all chosen to locate here at Wynyard Park because it’s ideal for our business. However, we don’t necessarily know about the other businesses on the site, the products and services they offer, or if there is any potential to work together. “This new directory enables us to find out about the other companies around us and to establish relationships with them. “Online business networking will lead

to the development of personal business relationships, and hopefully develop to the benefit of all.” Matt Johnson, Development Manager, Wynyard Park, added:

Wynyard Park is home to a diverse range of businesses and this new online directory will enable all organisations to connect and engage more effectively. “That Tilly Bailey & Irvine has developed this facility, in partnership with Wynyard Park, which raises the profiles of our tenants, opens doors and makes introductions is testament to the sense of community that we have created here at the Park and we’d like to thank them for their support.”

BUSINESS PARK’S ICONIC BUILDING SET FOR SIGNIFICANT EXPANSION

PROFILE

Wynyard Park House fully let after 12 new companies move in Wynyard Park’s iconic building, Wynyard Park House, is set for further expansion after becoming fully let in just over a year. The expansion is due to the number of new start up and small firms relocating to the site to benefit from the wide range of high specification serviced office space, which is available on flexible easy in/easy out terms. Anna Stone, Wynyard Park Ltd’s Facilities Coordinator, said: “In just over a year, we have attracted 12 companies which have taken a total of around 10,000 sq ft of space. “Given the level of demand we have decided to free up another 5,000 sq ft of space.” She added: “To become fully let and then expanding in such a short space of time is an amazing achievement,

particularly given the challenging economic climate we’ve been operating in. We believe that it is the combination of on-going business support and highclass facilities all delivered in the iconic setting of Wynyard Park House that has contributed to the stunning success of this scheme.” Bob Jefferson of MNI, based within Wynyard Park House, said: “When looking to move into a new commercial workspace, there was only one option I considered in the Tees Valley and that was Wynyard Park. Aside from the fact that it has an ideal central location with easy access to the A1 and A19, the quality of the office accommodation can’t be beaten. There is a real sense of community here and the bespoke serviced office packages offered were ideal for our growing business.”

TREKKING EQUIPMENT BOSS WALKS THE WALK Ultralight Director gives advice to customers in California

Ultralight Outdoor Gear Director, Mark Richardson, has proved he knows what he’s talking about when giving advice to customers, by trekking through the Californian Sierra Nevada mountain range in the US. His company supplies clothing and equipment for backpacking, mountain treks and adventure racing. Mark headed to California in August to tackle the three-week hike, the John Muir Trail and said: “The trek was a huge step as the route lasts 21 days,

covers 200 miles in a very remote area and with only one re-supply point at the nine day mark you need to be incredibly self sufficient. The consolation though, is virtually guaranteed wall to wall sunshine and some of the best mountain scenery in the world. If you’re going to give advice it’s important to know how the kit responds in action and there’s no substitute for personal experience. I can tell people how kit performs in various conditions, what I thought was the best and any limitations.”

Already running in Stockholm and Härnösand, the third of the centres went live on September 24 in Gothenburg. Company Director Nick Drew commented: “We are delighted to see the project in Gothenburg go live. Having successfully installed NTS in the first two locations, we were confident this one would go smoothly, and it did.” Buoyed by its success in Sweden, Nicander is aggressively seeking new business. Drew commented: “The rollout in Sweden has confirmed our belief that we can develop mission critical complex applications. We are actively seeking new business opportunities in a number of new markets.”

According to the findings, the North East has the fewest number of business start-ups per 1,000 of the population only 5.7 compared to London, which has the highest at 11. In response, the region’s leading advisory and support service, Business Link, is working hard to redress the balance and is urging individuals hoping to start their own business to

270,000 NEW businesses are started in the UK every year.

A RECENT REPORT by RSM Tenon shows many entrepreneurs are unsure where to seek funding, support & advice.

THE NORTH EAST FINANCE for Business fund has £125m and aims to support 850 businesses.

After identifying a niche opportunity in the marketplace, a North East company has launched a new electrical safety training course designed for engineers, technicians and operators working with wind turbines. Complying with UK and EU Health & Safety legislation is a requirement for all operators working in the power and electrical industries, or those sectors that use high voltage equipment and the new Wind Turbine High Voltage Training Course designed by The Faraday Centre, meets all such regulations and directives. Suhail Mitoubsi, Group General Manager at The Faraday Centre, says: “As the renewable energy sector continues to grow apace, particularly across North East England, we recognised a real market demand for electrical high voltage training designed specifically for this burgeoning industry. We are currently scoping out a bespoke programme for a leading global energy provider and believe the course will appeal to large organisations, as well as individuals wishing to diversify and enhance their skill-set.”

LUXURY FASHION RETAILER TRIPLES ORDERS AFTER RECORD SALES

TOWN’S BUSINESSES BENEFIT FROM RENT-FREE BOOST

Stockton Enterprise Arcade supports five new business start-ups Earlier this year, Stockton Council launched Enterprise Arcade, which was designed to provide six month’s rentfree accommodation on the town’s High Street for five new businesses, as well as individual business coaching, marketing advice and training. The short-term project was hailed a success with three of the businesses establishing themselves permanently in Stockton town centre. Hobbies R Uz, a family business selling remote control and modelling crafts and Embellish, which sells jewellery and hair accessories, are both now trading in the Shambles. Meanwhile, Chocs Away, which offers handmade chocolates and sweets, has relocated to 4 Silver Street. The remaining two businesses 12

are also continuing to flourish with Victoria Jackson Renovated Furniture moving to premises at Nature’s World in Middlesbrough and DW Clothing looking to take on premises in Darlington. The Enterprise Arcade was funded by the Tees Valley Industrial Programme and Stockton Council is now conducting a comprehensive evaluation to explore the possibility of continuing the initiative. Furthermore, in addition to the success of the pilot scheme, the town centre has experienced a recent influx of businesses establishing themselves in the town centre. Earlier this month the travel agents Dawson & Sanderson opened its new flagship store on Stockton High Street and Asda has opened in the former Netto store.

Premier designer clothing store, Joseph M, has tripled its orders with North East based clothing manufacturer, Barbour, following record sales of the now cult jackets and coats. Sales of the legendary heritage brand have also contributed to the 70 per cent increase in online sales that the team at Joseph M has experienced in the last twelve months. Pat Copeland, owner of Joseph M, says: “We’ve always had a strong online presence but this year in particular we’re experienced a surge in orders and from outside of the region too. I think our diverse range of designers is the main appeal, as we’re one of the region’s only stockists of Matthew Williamson, See by Chloe, Issa, the label adored by Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge and of course Barbour. This year Barbour has teamed up with British designer Alice Temperley to create a glamorous collection called Barbour Gold Label by Temperley, which features leathers, outerwear and chunky Arran knitwear, which we’re predicting will be one of our best selling collections.”

BIGGEST NEW BUILD SINCE 1995

TEESSIDE ENTERPRISE ZONE GIVEN THE GREEN LIGHT The new network will create 3,000 new jobs by 2015

The Government has approved the first phase of a proposal for a £4 billion multi-location enterprise zone across the Tees Valley, which will significantly support the continued regeneration of the area. Earlier this year the local enterprise partnership mapped out the most ambitious economic blueprint Teesside has seen in years: a 24-zone network that would create 43,000 jobs over the next quarter of a century. Following a review by Central Government, a revised plan that will take the enterprise zone network forward over the next four years has now been agreed. As a result of the revisions, the 24-strong network will be reduced to 12, with businesses benefiting from tax breaks and fast-track planning rules and eight zones will qualify for business rate relief, as detailed in the original proposal. It is hoped that the initiative will attract 1,250 new businesses and generate more than 40,000 jobs over the course of the next 25 years. Encompassing 12 individual sites across the five Tees Valley boroughs, the Enterprise Zone will offer stimulating financial incentives to help attract real investment and growth while generating job opportunities by 2015 and beyond. One of four key sites set to benefit from the Enterprise Zone includes South West Iron Masters in Middlesbrough, which is to be developed by Strategic Sites Middlesbrough Limited. Benefits to companies locating to the site include business rate discounts worth up to £55,000 per year up to March 2016. In addition, the sites will have the advantage of simplified planning regimes to help attract and support

the growth and development of other small and medium enterprises. Stephen Catchpole, Managing Director at Tees Valley Unlimited, who led the application, said: “TVU, our partners and stakeholders have received strong commendation for the long-term plan that we presented as it demonstrated an appreciation of our industrial heritage and identified sectors in which we can and should be growing, including the new and exciting digital sector. The Government’s priority is to achieve delivery within a shorter timescale up to 2015 and therefore we have worked together to agree a plan that will both achieve results and give us the foundation on which to build our long-term transformation of the Tees Valley. He adds:

I am delighted with the announcement and should like to pay tribute particularly to our local authority partners and the business representative organisations, whose effort and support have secured this achievement. “I believe the Tees Valley Enterprise Zone will be a great success and look forward to the hard work ahead to ensure its delivery.” In July, the Government also announced enterprise zones would be created in Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds and Sheffield, and in addition to the creation of Teesside’s zone, applications for Tyneside and County Durham are currently being considered.

IN BRIEF

Enterprise Zones

PM, DAVID CAMERON, announced the first enterprise zones in spring 2011.

THE SECOND wave was announced in August 2011.

The networks are designed to:

KICK-START the British economy.

CUT business taxes.

REDUCE planning restrictions.

Leading car parts manufacturer Nifco UK has announced that its revenues have increased from £22 million to £22.8 million over the course of the last year. The company is also forecasting sales will double within the next three years following its expansion into a new purpose built facility on Durham Lane, Eaglescliffe, in the first quarter of 2012. Nifco UKs new commercial base is set to be the largest new-build facility across the Tees Valley region in the last 16 years.

HARTLEPOOL SCHOOL SHOWCASES £1.37M INVESTMENT Rossmere Primary School in Hartlepool has officially unveiled its new £1.37 million Early Years Learning Space, which was funded by a grant from the Government’s Primary Capital Fund. The new facility aims to make the transition from nursery and reception to Key Stage 1 as seamless as possible for the school’s youngsters by integrating the classes into the main school building. A stimulating high tech learning environment has been created, featuring the latest teaching equipment and a central ‘hub’ allow both the nursery and reception children to play and learn together.

HOUSEHOLD WASTE GENERATES ELECTRICITY AND JOBS Planning permission has been granted for a new facility in Billingham, which will be capable of generating power for up to 50,000 homes in the North East by converting household and commercial waste into electricity. Air Products is one of the largest advanced gasification projects planned for the UK and would create up to 700 jobs during a three year construction period, as well as up to 50 jobs once the facility was built. Subject to financing and securing permission from the Environment Agency, work is expected to commence next year with commercial operations beginning in 2014. W Autumn 2011

marketWise. THE AGE OF THE APPRENTICE

A

s businesses across the region and indeed the UK, continue to operate against a challenging economic backdrop, unemployment figures remain resolutely bleak, especially among 16-25 year olds. Add to the mix the soaring costs of higher education University fees are largely unrealistic and an unviable option for many ‘would be’ students - and we are potentially looking at the evolution of an unskilled generation, supported by the ‘Nanny State’. WHILE GOVERNMENT CUTBACKS have also impacted heavily upon the business community, it is working hard to implement new support measures in the hope of kick-starting the regeneration of the British economy. In January 2008 the Government published World Class Apprenticeships: Unlocking Talent, Building Skills for All, which set out ambitious plans for one in five young people aged 16 to 18 to be apprentices by 2020 and to guarantee an apprenticeship to all those suitably qualified by 2013. The plans have since been adopted by the new Coalition, which has committed to spending £250 million by 2014-15 to create an extra 75,000 adult apprenticeships, and welcomed by councils and further education colleges. “Hartlepool Council wholeheartedly supports apprenticeships,” says Councillor Pamela Hargreaves, Hartlepool Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, “They are an excellent way for young people to get onto the employment ladder, learn new skills and develop their confidence.” However, implementing the plans is proving challenging, as there are many misconceptions regarding apprenticeships and apprentices. Male dominated and geared towards manual labour, immature and an increased risk

to the employer, that they involve too much effort for too little return and have a lower status than college-based learning. Sound familiar? Well, times have changed, but it seems the mindset and many of the myths still remain. “Businesses big and small do recognise the potential for apprentices, they just need to realise the vast options available and the potential talent pool that is out there” according to Steven Wallis, Assistant Principal, Hartlepool College of Further Education. Originally, apprenticeships were focused upon trades such as plumbing, carpentry and hairdressing. Now, traditional courses sit alongside those in Sport, Technical Design, Retail, Process Engineering and IT among others. The scope reflects the changing face of business and apprenticeships are increasingly designed to meet current market demands. “As the largest training provider in the Tees Valley and Durham we offer a diverse range of programmes for industry and business including higher education, work based learning and bespoke courses” says Steven, “We understand how important the programmes are for not only those entering work, but also the business providing the training.” BUT WHAT ABOUT THE BARRIERS for businesses and the benefits? Statistics show with guidance and relevant qualifications, apprentices can be moulded into invaluable members of the team and, as apprenticeships aren’t permanent, the pressure of a long-term investment is also removed, though many businesses retain the individual once training is complete. “Apprenticeships enable businesses to ensure that young people are employment-ready by the time they become permanent employees, which in turn ensures that firms have the right workforce they need to grow and develop” adds Councillor Hargreaves. And, it isn’t just the employer who benefits. The apprentice is given the opportunity to learn a new skill or

The government is funding up to

trade that directly relates to the career path they have chosen to follow, leaving them with a meaningful qualification and, more importantly, the potential of a permanent position. In addition, they possess a better understanding of the reality of working life. The initial placement can also be a route to higher education according to Karen Race of Teesside University, “…we have a number of Foundation degrees which enable apprentices to continue their learning beyond Level 3, many of which are delivered at local Further Education colleges.”

NEETS - 18 to 24-year-olds not in employment, education or training - has risen to more than 18% across England.

The government is providing 1,000 scholarships every year worth £1,000 to encourage apprentices to go into higher education.

IF THERE ARE SO MANY CLEAR advantages, then why are we not seeing businesses across the spectrum introducing apprenticeships? While there is an obvious need to increase desirability and demand, to promote the business rationale to a wider range of potential employers and to streamline the process, the biggest focus should be placed simply upon raising the status of apprenticeships. But how? Recently the North East business community was tasked with recruiting 100 apprentices in 100 days and more radically, Shadow Business Secretary, John Denham, announced Labour’s plans to ensure any business looking to win public sector contracts must have an apprentice scheme in place. Clearly then, the message is beginning to be spread. But unfortunately, regardless of the benefits, there are currently only 11 apprenticeships for every 1,000 employees. However with the myths fully exposed, the challenge lies firmly with the business community to introduce apprentices into their organisations and to take responsibility for the regeneration of the regional and indeed national economy. “The New Bribery Act is already making headlines, but how can it directly affect my business?” K Donnelly, Offshore Engineering Company

JOHN WALTERS Partner, Corporate, TBI Solicitors

MARTIN BARBER Managing Partner and Tax Advisor, Evolution LLP

MARTIN BARBER: SINCE COMING INTO FORCE on 1 July 2011, the Act is being described as ‘one of the most sweeping anti corruption measures in British history’ - bribery is now deemed a criminal offence and covers corporate entities failing to prevent bribery by a person acting on its behalf. It’s important that whatever the size and nature of your business, you act early and understand the responsibilities in respect of the Act. If you operate overseas the risk may be higher and while the Act is not designed to prevent corporate hospitality you must also be aware of the restrictions and guidelines. In short, you must have adequate procedures in place to prevent anyone connected with your business giving or receiving bribes for the benefit of the company. Start by carrying out a risk assessment to identify possible areas of exposure and then determine a policy with support from your accountant and tax advisor. Once your procedure and policy is set, all staff should be trained and a compliance officer appointed to continue to monitor and review policies and procedures. It’s not as confusing as it may first appear but it is vital that you are aware of it and the impact it could have upon your business. For advice: 01642 221331 / evolutionllp.com

overhaul of the UK’s IP laws and systems, which the government is committed to implementing during the lifetime of the present parliament. The report’s basic premise is that existing laws originally created to protect authors and their publishers are obstructing innovation and economic growth in the digital age. It sets out a clear strategic argument supported by just ten recommendations, rather than going into great detail about particular issues. The law-making process is underway and there is much consultation and debate to look forward to. We must watch this process unfold before we can determine precisely which laws will control the forthcoming IP landscape. There is no doubt that in the future IP owners and users will be playing in a whole new ball game. In particular, the report’s recommendations champion the cause of the SME sector’s contribution to the UK economy and promise that SMEs will benefit from, among other things, the single European patent, easier copyright licensing, a better rights framework for designs and making it easier to obtain patents. WORLD...

“WHERE EVERYBODY KNOWS YOUR NAME. AND YOU’RE ALWAYS GLAD YOU CAME” Famous lyrics they may be, but this is a work ideal we’d all like to enjoy. Community, a sense of belonging and an environment that happily marries work and lifestyle as one. It’s something we’d all like to experience, but just how many of us are that lucky?

I

N THE U.S., A POSITIVE WORK LIFE BALANCE IS VIEWED VERY differently to the way in which many businesses in the UK and Europe perceive it. Lifestyle is woven into the work culture in America, and achieving a work life balance is as much about the social responsibility on the part of the business for the employee, as it is about the business gaining a competitive advantage. And, it’s not just about flexible working either. Employees are increasingly looking to get more out of their working day. They want to build their health and fitness routine around work, enjoy green spaces and factor their day to day activities into their schedule. Childcare is another key element in achieving the perfect work life balance, as working parents want to know their children are close by and receiving the best possible care and attention in order to relax and perform at the office. In the UK, research has also shown that 92 per cent of workers believe that they work to their best possible standards when they can comfortably balance their work commitments with their equally demanding lifestyles.

BENEFITS SUCH AS THESE ARE MUCH NEEDED WHEN YOU CONSIDER the latest statistics from the TUC, which show that people are spending more time than ever at work and Britons continue to work the longest hours in Europe. In fact, more than four million full-time employees in the UK work more than 48 hours each week, a staggering 700,000 more than during the 1990s, while one in six workers regularly clock up more than 60 hours across their working week. And the reason we’re working harder than every before? Well, work has always been about earning money to live. But for a growing number of professionals, the recession has focused the average working mindset upon simple income survival. It’s no surprise then that personal and professional identities are blurring into one, making it much harder to segregate the work self from the non-work self and lifestyles fall by the wayside. IF WE’RE SPENDING SO MUCH OF OUR TIME WORKING TO LIVE, MATT believes it’s vital to make the most of your time at the office. “To help our tenants achieve the ideal work life balance, our concierge services help make everyday tasks that bit easier, whether it’s taking delivery of their online shopping, making travel arrangements or collecting their dry cleaning, we can step in and manage the process. We even have an on site beauty salon – in the guise of an iconic American Airstream Classic trailer – where our tenants can enjoy being pampered during a coffee or lunch break. We all have busy lives and if we can make the time our tenants spend working on site, go that little bit further and work that little bit harder for them, then we’ll have achieved our vision.”

A WORK ENVIRONMENT THAT’S AS MUCH ABOUT LIFESTYLE AS IT IS about the day job? It all makes for a great vision. Now, one business park in the region wants this vision to become a reality. And not just for the big players, but for businesses of all shapes and sizes. “It’s not enough to simply have a luxury office in a great location. You need to look at the bigger picture” says Matt Johnson, Development Manager at Wynyard Park. “We truly believe lifestyle plays an essential role in creating the ideal work environment. We want our tenants to feel safe, secure and valued, that they belong to a community and are part of something special. In addition to our many on-site facilities and services, we have created a number of bespoke benefits such as reWards, our tenant benefits scheme, which enables everyone on site to enjoy a host of exclusive discounts and offers from forty With a range of unique workspaces to accommodate two to three of the most recognisable brands hundred people, Wynyard Park has a truly flexible approach and is proud to say that it works with all types of companies, with all types and organisations in the region of budgets. While it’s almost 90% let, there are still some great spaces and across the UK, as well as our available and ready to enjoy straight away. intranet and networking events.”

SO, IF THE AVERAGE PERSON IS destined to spend 100,000 hours of their lives pursuing a career, it’s no surprise that this same career will inevitably define who they are and impact upon the life they lead outside the office and away from work. However, the promise of the work life balance is not entirely lost. It just seems that to achieve this elusive ideal you need to make sure you’re working in the right environment. W Autumn 2011

ACED WITH NEUTRAL WALLS AND MONOcoloured carpet tiles, putting your individual stamp on your office space can be challenging, especially if it’s rented. However with smart planning and careful investment it is possible to create a unique yet practical space. Furniture is the foundation of any office and while there are great standard options available, bespoke, ergonomic pieces are more affordable than you may believe and can also be a sound investment. Awkward columns in the centre of floor spaces shouldn’t pose a problem. Companies such as Pendock Profiles can supply casings that can quickly transform an obstruction into a feature. With the casings in place you can simply install up-lighters to create unique lighting variations or add suspended shelving between columns to divide the space and create additional display space. Flooring can be used to determine different zones within the office such as walkways and reception spaces, and these can be enhanced by targeted spot lighting. Floorink has created a series of bespoke floor coverings and there are unlimited luxury design options; choose from thousands of specially selected images in the library or for that added personal touch you can design your own floor. Like flooring, partitioning can completely change the flow and feel of the space. Working with companies such as Komfort you can divide and manipulate an office in unique ways using demountable partitions, integral blinds, manifestation and moveable walls. Partitioned glass walls are also available, which, at the flick of a switch become opaque, offering privacy within. Graphics or a frosted etched film effect can also be added to the glazing. For the walls, look at bespoke printed wallpaper from a company like Tektura. They can take any design you give them and print it onto wall coverings. This could include company branding and colours or take an element of what your company does and use this as a theme throughout the office space. Above all, remember the office space may be rented, but there are always options to put your company stamp on it.

VENTUALLY EVERYDAY DRIVING WILL mean electric cars. But not right now. For now, we’ve got the hybrid. And, when you think hybrid, you think Toyota. But when you think luxury hybrid, there’s only one choice; Lexus. Toyota’s premium brand offers a build quality and comfort far superior to any other model on the market. WHILE THE GS 450H HAS LEAD THE HYBRID drive and is ranked in the top five luxury large cars, Lexus has added new models to its range at each end of the spectrum. The RX450h is standing its ground against the ever popular X5, Q5 and Range Rover Sport from BMW, Audi and Land Rover respectively, but perhaps the biggest evolution has come in the decidedly bijou shape of the CT200h, the world’s first full luxury compact car. If you’re buying into Kylie’s silent revolution then you may be a little disappointed as you can drive it in electric mode, but only for a couple of miles. But that’s not really the point of the CT200h. Here comes the science. Are you ready? The purpose of the electric

motor is to share the driving load with the car’s four-cylinder engine, making it much more efficient and ideally saving you money. While the current perception that hybrids are a drain on the wallet still remains, it’s worth remembering that with petrol priced £1.40 a litre and rising, they really are an attractive and viable proposition. Designed to appeal to drivers looking at the Audi A3 or a BMW 1 series and wanting something a little more sporty too, the CT200h starts at £23,000 and achieves around 69 miles-to-the-gallon, but the premium model complete with sat-nav, cruise control and a parking camera will set you back £30,000. So does this luxury compact live up to expectation and is it worthy of its price tag? Well it’s small yet beautifully finished, with a spacious cabin and most importantly, a comfortable driving position. While there’s less

LIKE NEARLY ALL HYBRIDS THOUGH THIS is an automatic and you only use the gear selector for moving between EV, Eco, Normal or Sport. EV is electric mode, which is a little limiting, as it soon runs out of power after a mile or two. However, the car comes into its own in Eco, and most drivers would permanently have the car in this mode given that it’s one of the key reasons for buying the car originally. Put simply, driving in Eco softens the throttle response, which in turns saves petrol and the dashboard informs you of how ‘green’ your driving is, which is reassuring if not at times distracting. Luckily though, when

THE BEST OF THE LUXURY HYBRID RANGE…

Remember, you’re paying for luxury and efficiency combined... you hit Sport mode, the revs do increase and the electric motor boosts power. However, it just doesn’t feel sporty and I’m not too sure why it’s being sub-branded in this way. There’s no doubt in my mind that it’s in town or over local and short distances that the hybrid system works best, and in traffic jams the CT200h runs far more silently than any diesel. It’s these qualities that define the car. When driving, there was no sense of the extra weight of the battery, the acceleration and braking, although much softer than I’m used to, were excellent and the suspension was tight. Like any good hatchback it’s responsive and handles well when cornering and cruises effortlessly. And the fuel efficiency? Well, a full tank will give you around 680 miles in Eco. Remember, you’re paying for luxury and efficiency

combined. Most of all, the thing I did ‘buy’ into was the quiet. Yes, the electric mode was always going to be silent, but I was surprised at just how peaceful driving in Eco mode was. It was so quiet that I found myself more aware than ever before of my driving, which is no bad thing and I felt relaxed and calmer during and post drive. Again, no bad thing for commuters or those driving regularly. SO, WHAT ELSE IS THERE TO SAY? IT’S THE only Premium automatic to receive Greener Vehicle discount to the London Congestion charge and doesn’t require taxing, which will appeal to fleets and it’s just the right side of luxury to ensure employees look the part without appearing too flash. For everyone else, it’s an entry into the luxury and executive car market and like it or not, driving is on the road to becoming ‘greener’ and the CT200h is the hybrid model that everyone’s talking about. Not so quiet a revolution after all then.

ON THE GREEN

F

orget Facebook. By all means give Twitter a twirl. But, if social networking is your thing then the best site is still the green. The glorious game has long since replaced the boardroom as the alternative, informal environment to meet and do business. If you haven’t tried it then now is definitely the time and there’s nothing to fear, as due to the handicap system, golf is one of the few sports where skill is irrelevant. As long as you can at least swing a club, you’re in. While you may know business is all about people, how well do you really know the people you are doing, or about to start doing, business with? Meeting over 18 holes gives colleagues, peers and clients a chance to showcase other talents, such as sportsmanship, patience and good social skills, giving you an insight into their real character. Four hours of sporting fun on the green offers an opportunity to pitch proposals and make lasting relationships outside the sometimes limiting constraints of the office. Instead, you can indulge clients and contacts while making an impression and networking in a relaxed setting. That said it’s vital to remember that you’re still at work and corporate

image and company values have to translate to your behaviour and attitude on the course. So, whether it’s a relaxed four-ball or a full-on corporate golf day, the green and boardroom have a synergy that can’t be ignored. Balls may be lost, but sound relationships will be forged. What are you waiting for?

THREE OF THE BEST greens for business...

WHAT THE EXPERT SAYS: Before teeing off, it’s important to remember the following rules when using the green for business: 1. Gauge fellow golfers’ competitiveness and play accordingly. 2. Follow golf etiquette at all times. 3. Don’t start discussing business at the first hole, slowly lead into it. 4. Keep your temper in check – stay professional. 5. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, it’s how you play the game. W

hy is the nation’s favourite dancer kicking off her dancing shoes and treading the boards in an altogether Northern production? STRICTLY COME DANCING CHAMPION AND I’M A CELEBRITY SURVIVOR, CAMILLA DALLERUP, SPEAKS TO JENNIFER TATE ABOUT HER DETERMINATION, MOTIVATION AND NEW FOUND PASSION FOR THE THEATRE.

W Autumn 2011

I

Darlington was one of my favourite places to perform; I’ll never forget that. There aren’t many old theatres like that left...

T’S 9AM ON A SUNNY MORNING IN SHEFFIELD AND I’m eagerly awaiting the arrival of Camilla Dallerup, the inaugural cover star in this first issue of W. Camilla’s spent the last four months unlocking the thespian within, as she makes her acting debut for Tim Firth’s Calendar Girls Tour, working alongside some of the country’s top actresses, including Lesley Joseph, Kacey Ainsworth, Rula Lenska and Lynda Bellingham, to name but a few. As she enters through the stage doors a little past 9am, fresh-faced and energised by the brisk 20-minute walk from the house she is renting with her husband, Kevin, and dog, Sven, I instantly warm to her relaxed Danish charm... CAMILLA HAS MADE A NAME FOR HERSELF AS THE DARLING OF primetime television over the past nine years, finding fame on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, before moving on to a host of presenting roles and featuring in a number of reality shows including I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here and Underdog, where she met her husband, the former Hollyoaks actor, Kevin Sacre. It seemed inevitable then that Camilla would eventually turn her hand to acting, and earlier this year she landed her dream first role in the Calendar Girls Tour, alongside her husband. Sticking closely to the film’s much-loved plot, the record-breaking theatre production of Calendar Girls portrays the real life story of a group of women who pose for a risqué WI calendar, in the hope of raising money for Leukaemia Research following the loss of one of their husbands. Camilla plays the part of Elaine, a foolhardy makeup artist who seduces one of the women’s husbands. ‘Sadly most people have been touched by cancer in some way and because we can all relate to the story, it’s so much more powerful. It’s an honour to be part of it and I feel lucky to have this opportunity, especially as it’s my first acting role; I’ve always dreamt of doing theatre. “I play such a silly girl, which I love too. Elaine is someone who never thinks of the consequences of her own actions and I think we all know that type of girl. She’s a joy and playing her has taught me not to take things so seriously, to simply enjoy the now.” Her Danish charm creeps back in as she talks fondly about the places she’s been fortunate to visit while on tour, and how each venue is different, “Darlington was one of my favourite places to perform; I’ll never forget that. The audience was so interactive, just how the theatre should be. All of the crew said the same; it was such an amazing week. There aren’t many old theatres like that left.” WITH HER DANCER’S PHYSIQUE, YOU HAVE THE IMPRESSION THAT her fragility could cause her to break at any moment. When in reality, she is one of the strongest willed, and most motivated women I’ve met. Though her confidence is apparent, I was curious to learn how she’s found the transition from entertainer to actor, something that is completely new to her, “As I have danced for so many years I didn’t ever feel nervous. But, I have never felt as exposed as I am every night when I’m acting. I am completely out of my comfort zone. “Performing has always been part of my life and nothing quite beats

52

Camilla is pictured in Halston Heritage, on stage at the Lyceum Theatre, Sheffield, where she recently played with the cast of Calendar Girls.

that immediate feeling and buzz of a live audience. But unlike dancing, the audience is much more involved in the performance. It took me by surprise the first time the audience laughed at one of my lines.” As we start to discuss how she overcomes her nerves, I can sense that Camilla has never been one to suffer from crippling self-doubt. Dancing from the age of two and competing at six, she describes how she has always known that dance was what she wanted to do. “While living in Denmark dancing became my outlet and fed my need to perform, though I never necessarily wanted to be famous. I just loved reaching the audience.” Leaving Denmark and her home at 16, Camilla stayed true to her roots, competing and slowly making her way to the top. In 2004 she was invited to join BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing. Laughing, she recalls “It took me twenty years to become an overnight success and people often forget the effort I have put in to be where I am now. I’m proof that if you want something and work hard, you will achieve it.” Many were shocked in 2008, when after six years she left the show that made her a household name, but not before being crowned champion with her partner, Tom Chambers. “I was happy with what I’d achieved and I’ve always wanted to do different things in my life. The time felt right for something new.”

Word.

People need to be brave enough to change their way of thinking.

Photo: Jonathan Rose

BUT, THERE HAS ALWAYS BEEN ONE CONSTANT FOR CAMILLA, her desire to keep her body at its physical peak – she’s released two fitness DVDs and continues to dance with her professional partner, Ian Waite. As she tackles this new stage of her life in a role that isn’t as physically demanding, how does she continue to stay so lean and healthy? “I’m in a different place every week, so it’s difficult to stick to a defined fitness routine. One day I might be meditating on a beach and the next I am running across hills. I suppose my advice is pretty simple - walk or run whenever possible. If you’re out of your normal routine then just take a walk. Stay motivated.” And it’s clear to see that motivation is something this Danish beauty has in abundance. As a Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Master Practitioner – devotees actively use their mind, body and emotions to become more successful and happy - she has used NLP as a motivational tool in every aspect of her life, “It helped me banish limited beliefs and as I learnt more I wanted to help others to identify what was stopping them from reaching their goals. People need to be brave enough to change their way of thinking.” Speaking of her very public breakup with her fiancé and then professional dance partner Brendan Cole, following his alleged affair with Natasha Kaplinsky, his celebrity partner in the second series of Strictly, “NLP was so helpful in my private life to get me through the

LEADING LADY: With husband, the former Hollyoaks actor Kevin Sacre. The pair met whilst filming Underdog and currently star together in Calendar Girls.

painful situation with Brendan and even now, on a personal level I use it every day.” When I probe further about how NLP can be used to get results of any kind, personal or professional, she explains, “Essentially, the will has got to be bigger than the skill. You can be the best in the world at something, but unless you have a burning desire to truly do it, you won’t really succeed. Passion will always win out.” TALK INEVITABLY TURNS TO THE FUTURE AND CAMILLA’S PLANS, “This is one of the first times in my life when I haven’t thought about the future. It’s the longest, continuous job I’ve ever had and it’s nice not to simply work from performance to performance, as I did for so long when dancing. At the moment I’m just enjoying myself and this new professional experience. I certainly wouldn’t rule out more acting or theatrical work though, but for now I’m happy with where I’m at.” Who knows then what the future holds for Camilla once she has finished touring with Calendar Girls, but one thing is for sure, with her determination and motivation she is sure to achieve it. Camilla will be appearing in Calendar Girls at the Sunderland Empire from 12-17 September 2011. To book, please visit sunderlandempire.org.uk.

Turn of Mind by Alice LaPlante (Harvill Secker £12.99)

An accomplished surgeon and the stormy nature of her friendship with Amanda, makes Jennifer the prime suspect. However, even she cannot tell if she is responsible. The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes (Jonathan Cape £12.99)

Sex hungry and book hungry Tony and Adrian navigated the girl-less sixth form together and pledged to stay friends for life. Now middle aged, Tony has lived a pretty typical life and as far as he can remember not hurt anybody. But, as a lawyer’s letter is about to prove, memory is often imperfect and can throw up surprises. This story of one man coming to terms with a mutable past is laced with the trademark precision, dexterity and insight of one of the world’s most distinguished writers.

Professor Andersen’s Night by Dag Solstad (Harvill Secker £16.99)

It’s Christmas Eve and Professor Andersen is alone when he sees a man strangle a woman in the apartment across the street. But he fails to report the crime. Plagued by indecision he eventually comes face to face with the murderer. An unsettling yet entertaining novel of apathy, rebellion and morality, which poses the uncomfortable question: would you, like Professor Andersen, do nothing?

Drowning Rose by Marika Cobbold (Bloomsbury £11.99)

Eliza Cummings is leaving work when she receives a phone call, which draws her back 25 years to the death of her best friend. But why does Rose’s father want her to visit him? And why is he killing her with kindness when they both know he blames her for what happened? A stunning tale of friendship, generosity and secrets that can’t be kept hidden.

If you read only one thing... DAMNED by Chuck Palahniuk (Jonathan Cape £12.99) Welcome to The Inferno by way of The Breakfast Club from the mind of one of American fiction’s most notorious novelists. Thirteen-year-old Madison has problems: overweight, unloved by her movie star parents and in love with her adopted brother. She’s also dead. But not just dead. Madison is in Hell. With witty laugh out loud prose this dark comedic novel is one of Palahnuik’s best.

Whether you stay in or venture out, there’s plenty to watch this autumn... FILM

LOVES

TV Downton Abbey

On screens in autumn, ITV Continuing where we last left off, we return to Edwardian Downton Abbey in 1916 and in the midst of World War One. How will the battle affect the great house’s residents, the illustrious Grantham family and its servants, and will life ever be the same again? Fellowes himself hints ominously that “None of them are unaffected by the war. All of them change. And death doesn’t pass Downton Abbey by.” With new characters joining the original star studded cast, including outspoken housemaid Ethel Parks (Amy Nuttall) and Matthew’s new love interest Miss Lavinia Swire (Zoe Boyle), the new series looks set to remain a national fixation and a great source of drama as the nights start drawing in.

Fresh Meat

On screens in autumn, Channel 4 The award winning creators of Peep Show have once again produced a must see comedy. Starring comedy royalty Jack Whitehall and The Inbetweeners’ Joe Thomas, Fresh Meat follows six students as they head off for the biggest adventure of their lives so far…University. Away from home for the first time, the drama inevitably leads to appalling behaviour and terrible errors of judgement for the group of freshers.

An Idiot Abroad 2

On screens September, Sky One Last year we witnessed the birth of a reluctant star, as Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant sent their hapless friend, Karl Pilkington, on a journey to see the Seven Wonders of the World. This time, Karl has demanded more control and full disclosure before he goes anywhere. He’ll be swimming with dolphins and tackling Route 66, as he takes on the ‘Bucket List’ of things to do before you die.

FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS In Cinemas 9 September What happens when two friends decide that sex without the commitment of an emotional relationship is possible? Justin Timblerlake and Mila Kunis star in this mischievous RomCom that will have you laughing out loud.

FOOTLOOSE In Cinemas 14 October In a small town where rock music and dancing are forbidden, new kid on the block, Ren (Kenny Wormald), and the local preacher’s rebellious daughter Ariel (Julianne Hough), challenge the ban and all it represents. A fresh and fun remake of the 1984 cult movie.

If you watch only one thing... JANE EYRE In Cinemas 9 September Charlotte Bronte’s masterpiece is given yet another revamp, with this dark take on the story. Fleeing her isolated existence as Governess at Thornfield House and its owner, the aloof Edward Rochester (Michael Fassbender), Jane (Mia Wasikowska) embarks on a journey of self-reflection, which leads her back into the arms of Mr. Rochester – and the terrible secret he is hiding.

HERITAGE

haven.

MADELEINE GRIFFITH WAS INVITED TO TAKE A TOUR OF THE JEANES FAMILY HOME.

F

OR MORE THAN THREE CENTURIES, BARRINGTON Lodge has been nestled in charming Sedgefield. Home to the Jeanes family for the last forty years, the stunning four bedroom heritage property sits on peaceful Rectory Row, edging the village green. The Georgian property set in large mature gardens and woodland has an intriguing history. The grade II listed home was built by brothers Shute Barrington, a former Bishop of Durham, and Sir Samuel Barrington, an Admiral of the Fleet. A third brother within the illustrious family was Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1761. So, the property’s rather grand name is befitting of its historical pedigree. Yet it’s also apparent that Barrington Lodge has been devotedly cared for by many owners over the ages. Outside, a large ornate plaque with a Latin inscription which reads “This house was restored by the rector at his own expense in 1837” hangs on the wall. We visited on a beautiful day with sunlight flooding through the large sash windows. From the kitchen, the perfectly manicured garden looks the ideal setting for family and social gatherings, and I’m told 80 guests recently enjoyed a National Garden Society event here. Internally, the property retains many of its period features such as ornate ceiling roses, cornicing and friezes, and the character property’s architectural heritage is beautifully reflected in the furniture, which Anne and Tim have collected over the years from various antique shops and galleries. The wallpaper which covers the top half of the walls in the hallways features a striking peacock design. Picked up from a shop in America it has been a feature of the house for many years, as have the rich, gold velvet upholstered antique chairs in the downstairs hallway. These are part of a suite which Anne spotted in a gallery in the Lake District and took an instant shine to. On their return, Tim arranged for the suite to be shipped over as a birthday surprise. Another birthday present hangs in the dining room in the shape of a painting of ballet dancer, Marie-Anne St. Claire. Anne’s career in the performing arts inspired the portrait, which Tim painted for his wife’s 70th birthday. After spending the morning in this beautiful family home, it’s plain to see that Anne and Tim are going to struggle to leave it behind as they move on. Over the last four decades, they’ve honoured the building’s traditional period style and lovingly filled it with antique pieces and unique design touches and just hope that it continues to be treasured for the next forty years and beyond.

AUTUMNAL NIGHTS ARE MADE FOR COOKING, AND WITH THIS STUNNINGLY SIMPLE RECIPE USING LOCALLY SOURCED INGREDIENTS, YOU CAN WRAP-UP WARM AND INDULGE.

Monkfish wrapped in pancetta, with smoked salmon potato cake, leek sauce and poached egg Ingredients 1 x 170g monkfish fillet 3 x slices of pancetta 3 x slices of smoked salmon 2 x large leeks 160g mashed potato 1 x egg Breadcrumbs

Method Potato Cake: Gently warm the slices of smoked salmon under the grill with a little fresh garlic and some olive oil, for around 2 minutes. Add to a bowl and mix with the mashed potato and breadcrumbs and season well. Then, form into a patty shape and shallow fry in oil at 160 degrees until brown. For the Fish: Lay three slices of pancetta on a chopping board, then place the monkfish at the bottom and roll together, making sure to keep it tight. Cook in a hot pan for around 6 minutes. Finish off by placing the pan in the oven at 185 degrees for a further 6 minutes, making sure to keep turning it. For the Sauce: Heat some vegetable stock in a pan and once boiling, add the leeks. After around 5 minutes take the pan off the heat and blitz the leeks with a hand blender until smooth, then pass through a fine sieve and season to taste. To Serve: Pour the leek sauce into a large bowl. Then carefully place the hot potato cake on top. Slice the monkfish lengthways on an angle, before sitting on the potato cake with the poached egg on top.

WANT A CITY BREAK WITH A DIFFERENCE? WE’VE SHORTLISTED THE BEST ALTERNATIVE DESTINATIONS FOR YOUR PERFECT POST SUMMER TRIP.

REYKJAVIK Extreme Environments

P

ERCHED ON THE EDGE OF THE ARCTIC CIRCLE AND FRAMED BY A DRAMATIC backdrop of volcanoes and glaciers, Reykjavík is an idiosyncratic city. While the landscape may be largely frozen, the Icelandic capital boasts nightlife as hot as its geothermal lagoons and pools. If you’re looking for something a little different, then Reykjavík is most definitely it. While the city has an abundance of cool hotels, Hotel 101 is a hip harbourside bolthole in the old part of town. Housed between the opera house and Reykjavik’s official buildings this boutique hotel mixes classic Icelandic design with luxe metropolitan interiors. If extreme adventure is on your agenda then The Golden Circle tour takes you through Þingvellir National Park, along the mountain track toward the famous geothermal area of Geysir the spouting hot spring and then Gullfoss, the Golden Waterfall. Finally the action picks up a gear as you are taken on a snowmobiling and sledding tour across Langjökull, Iceland’s second largest glacier (natureexplorer.is). Alternatively, why not head out to Faxaflói Bay by catamaran to watch minke whales and the occasional humpback? The trip also takes in tiny Lundey Island, which is home to some 20,000 puffins. (Whale Watching Centre +354 533 2660 or whalewatching.is). After a day exploring it’s hard to resist the temptation of the hotel’s chic restaurant, which is filled with modern art, but for another unique experience the Perlan Restaurant offers authentic Icelandic cuisine in a spectacular setting, as diners are treated to a panoramic view of Reykjavik as the restaurant gently rotates every two hours. And finally no trip to the city would be complete without visiting the Blue Lagoon, Iceland’s stunning geo thermal pool. The warm, milky-blue water is said to have curative properties and as it’s located between Reykjavik and the airport it’s a great place to relax before your flight home (€30 admission and the Lagoon is open daily 10am-8pm from Sept-May. bluelagoon.com). Flights from £235 return with Iceland Air flying from London. Three nights accommodation in a double room at Hotel 101 in September from £642. For more information visit 101hotel.is.

Something for nothing: Reykjavík’s far-northerly location makes it the ideal place to see the Northern Lights. A crisp clear night is the perfect time to watch the ethereal swirls of red and green dance across the sky.

ISTANBUL East Meets West

I

STANBUL IS THE HISTORIC CROSSROADS BETWEEN EAST AND WEST, A CITY OF minarets and palaces looking resolutely to the future. Straddling Europe and Asia and with commanding views of the dazzling metropolis skyline at every turn, it is most deserved of its ‘City of the World’s Desire’ title, offering a treasure trove of sights, sounds and experiences. The city also boasts some of the coolest bars and clubs – whichever continent you’re standing in – as well as fashion-forward shops and delicious cuisine fit for a sultan himself. Upon arrival, check into The House Hotel Nisantasi, a Bosphorous-facing design dream. This seven-storey city terrace has been renovated to match the stylish district it inhabits – the smart black entrance sets the tone, and inside it just gets better with Autoban interiors, spacious suites and statement style pieces, such as chairs that look like birdcages. Once settled, it’s time to venture out to explore Istanbul’s veritable cultural feast of museums, art galleries and historic Ottomans. And no tour of the city would be complete without a visit to its most notable spots. First on any list should be the architectural masterpiece, Hagia Sophia, part Cathedral part mosque and totally breathtaking. Then visit the Tokapi Palace made famous by Sultans and their Harems before soaking up the sights and sounds in the Aladdin-style Grand Bazaar, where you can haggle for gold, jewellery, textiles, carpets and caviar. Then take some time for yourself at a hamam, the famous Turkish baths. Les Ottomans’ Caudalie Vinothérapie Spa on Muallim Naci Caddesi offers a luxurious, modern take on the Turkish bath, and has couples treatments too (esottomans. com). Cağaloğlu Hamam near the Grand Bazaar was built almost 300 years ago and is absolutely authentic (0212 522 2424 or cagalogluhamami.com.tr). If you’re so inclined, you can relax further with a hubbly-bubbly pipe at the cafés off Tophane Iskelesi near the Nusretiye mosque. After dark, the city takes on a new heady vibe and if you have a taste for the adventurous then head to a meyhane, where you can sample a host of authentic and wonderful tapas style meals, relax with a glass of raki (Turkey’s national drink) and tap your feet to the fasil folk music. And the exotic nightlife doesn’t stop there, as you take to the rooftops of the city’s hottest and most fashionable bars and clubs to drink in the sights. If you are looking for a venue to keep you entertained all night then make sure you go to Sortie (sortie.com.tr). Flights from £482 return with Turkish Airlines flying from Manchester. Three nights accommodation in a double room at The House Hotel Nisantasi in September start from £816.67. For more information visit thehousehotel.com.

Something for nothing: For 20 days from September through to October the city becomes a muse for jazz impresarios, at the Arkbank International Jazz Festival, offering free workshops on projects such as jazz photography.

LISBON

Lively luminescence

T

Something for nothing: ‘Feira da Ladra’ in Alfama is Lisbon’s legendary f lea market. Go early and keep your wits about you to ensure you snag a bargain.

HIS HISTORIC HILLSIDE CITY HAS CULTURE, COBBLES, CAFÉS, CABLE CARS AND COD aplenty. Discover Alfama’s medieval Moorish charm, Baixa’s bustle and chic Chiado; every district boasts character, calm and cool in abundance. First stop on your weekend adventure should be a tram ride - shabby chic style - on Lisbon’s classic yellow trams, winding your way through the streets and up to the highest points of the city for the best views. Then take a late lunch and sample the country’s national dish of bacalhau, dried and salted cod, or if you have a sweet-tooth, try Portugal’s legendary cinnamon-dusted custard tarts – the district of Belém boasts the best pastries, cooked to a secret recipe. Once refreshed, make sure you dedicate some time to visit the Gothic cathedrals, majestic churches and restored palaces that are in abundance. Top of your list should be a trip to the Belem Tower and Jeronimos Monastry, one of the most beautiful churches in Europe. For the more adventurous, leave your map behind and wind through the meandering streets of Alfama and its medieval alleys and precipitous staircases. Every twist and turn has its own story to tell, and you will find yourself lost among weather worn houses and buildings for hours. When the sun goes down there is no other place to be seen than at the all night street party at Bairro Alto. Spilling onto the Portuguese streets, the bars and restaurants throb with the mournful passion of Fado, Portugal’s traditional music. Here, you will find yourself partying until the early hours in unlikely locations, be it a riverside dock or an eighteenth century mansion. Once the party stops and it’s time to rest your head, then the Palacete Chafariz d’El Rei offers a retro regal experience. Channelling the spirit of it’s setting – the arty, medieval Alfama district – this former palace offers treat after visual treat: palatial suites, stately salons, pastel-painted walls and acid-bright antiques and artworks as well as leafy, green terraces with Tagus river views. Flights from £158 return with TAP Air Portugal from Manchester. Three nights accommodation in a double room at Palacete Chafariz d’El Rei in September start from £580. W’S JENNIFER TATE SPENDS THE NIGHT AT THE LUXURY FIVE STAR ROCKLIFFE HALL, HURWORTH, DARLINGTON.

N

ESTLED IN THE PRETTY VILLAGE OF Hurworth, Rockliffe Hall is an idyllic getaway bringing 19th Century high living bang up to date. A relatively new hotel for the region, Rockliffe has quickly made its mark, with celebrities and the country’s elite flocking to experience its five star luxury. Boasting one of Europe’s longest and most challenging golf courses, its own Michelin star chef and first class spa, the hotel is the perfect weekend retreat. Successfully marrying the old with new, each section of the hotel has its own carefully crafted personality. The Old Hall subtly hints at the venue’s history and prosperity with stained glass windows, marble pillars and ornate ceilings, while the New Hall is chic, contemporary and understated. Staying in a Rowan Room, complete with stunning

panoramic views of the woodland and golfing greens I immediately felt a world away from home. After settling in, I headed down to the spa for a Hot Oil Massage. I was led through opulent purple and blue lined corridors to my treatment room and an hour later emerged energised and relaxed. Pampering complete, I retreated to the hydrotherapy pool and happily whiled away an hour in the Spa rooms and bubbling waters before getting ready for dinner. The evening was spent in The Orangery, where we sampled the culinary delights of the Great British Menu-winning, Michelin star chef, Kenny Atkinson. From the locally sourced scallops and lamb, to the sinful custard tarts for dessert, the dinner was everything we had been led to believe it would be. Simply outstanding. The atmosphere was electric yet mellow and

while the setting is formal, the service is friendly and warm. It’s no wonder the restaurant is booked weeks in advance. The next morning after a restful night, the front desk informed me that Hurworth’s residents frequently stay. And after an evening spent enjoying all Rockliffe Hall has to offer, I can see why. It provided us with the chance to ‘get away from it all’ without actually getting away and we’ll be heading back soon. want to workout your body & mind?

THEN TURN ON TO THE POWER OF PILATES.

F

orever associated with the world of celebrity, Pilates is credited with creating long, lean limbs, a strong abdominal core and perfect posture. Loved by famous advocates including Jennifer Anniston, Sarah Jessica Parker, Victoria Beckham and Liv Tyler, Pilates is the exercise staple of some of the most recognisable women in the world. But the trend has shifted of late, as more and more men are recognising the wider benefits of the exercise. David Beckham, Hugh Grant and Rio Ferdinand are just some of the male celebrities who are known to have taken up the core strengthening workout. Gender aside though, the beauty of Pilates is that everyone can give it a go. In fact, beginners through to athletes, along with those suffering from back, neck or hip pain, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis or pregnant women can all benefit from classes. So how does it work? Pilates works your whole being to rebalance the mind and body to make you look and feel better. It is based on eight key elements of relaxation, co-ordination, alignment, stamina, concentration, centring, breathing and flowing movements.

Through a series of controlled exercise sequences, it strengthens the core muscles, including those in your abdominals, back, pelvic floor and diaphragm. And the result? A flatter stomach, lean arms and legs, firmer buttocks, improved posture, not to mention relief from stress and tension, and improved sleep.

WHAT THE EXPERT SAYS:

WORKOUT GEAR 1. The Anatomy of Pilates: ‘If you’re new to Pilates, this is a great read complete with 150 illustrations.’ (£14.99, yogamatters.com). 2. Pilates for Men with Lindsey Jackson: ‘One of only two men’s DVD’s on the market, this workout will stretch you in every way.’ (£14.99, amazon.co.uk). 3. Exer-Soft Ball: ‘Available in two sizes it helps develop strength and endurance - perfect for pelvic floor exercises.’ (£5.25, yogamatters.com) 4. eKO Lite Mat: ‘High-performance and environmentally friendly with acomfortable sea-grass texture.’ (£45.00, sukasport.com)

Pilates is great for both men and women in terms of improving body awareness, overall flexibility, coordination, balance, mobility and what is commonly referred to as core strength. The foundations of good Pilates practice lie in concentration and control of movement, which in turn teaches the client more about their own body. It truly is the ideal workout for both body and mind.
