The show must go on: Illinois Theater Shows its community spirit after roof collapse.
Pec Playhouse Theater is the 2024 Winnebago County Community Champion. It was one of four people or organizations recognized during the Excalibur & Excelsior Award Ceremony in December for giving back to their communities in Boone, Ogle, Stephenson and Winnebago counties.
The Pecatonica-based community theater company was founded in 1991. It was started by Pecatonica High School students and recent graduates who wanted to participate in theater even after their school cut its theater program. Since then, it has staged 155 productions featuring more than 1,400 performers. For 23 years it served as its high school's theater program. They’ve staged a high school production each year and exposed generations of students to the art form until the school finally reinstated its own theater program in 2014.
Today, the focus is on community theater with an effort to include all sorts of people. "Anybody of all ages can participate in the shows," , said Laurie Miller, who is leading a capital campaign to raise funds to construct a new theater inside a former industrial building.. "We try to pick shows that if we’re doing a big musical or something that there's roles for all ages."

The roof collapse on 02/24/2021 was due to heavy snowfall while the theater was empty and closed due to the pandemic. Pec Playhouse acquired the former Bennett Construction building, 202 W. 3rd St., in Pecatonica. Plans are for a $1.6 million renovation to turn the roughly 7,000-square-foot building into its new home. It will feature a 108-seat theater with wider seats for greater comfort, a large lobby, dressing rooms and a green room for hair and makeup. It will be paid for through a combination of insurance proceeds and donations.
A capital campaign started Dec. 1 has already collected $427,000 toward its goal of raising $950,000. Some funds have been raised through the sale of naming rights and seat sponsorships.

Bookworms to not Meet in February
Due to the few number of members expected to be available in February, the Bookworms will forego our normal meeting.
However, we hope that residents will start reading the March book, The Story of Arthur Trulove, by Elizabeth Berg. . .

Bookworms to Discuss TheStoryofArthurTruluvin March
Come to the Community Center at 2:00 pm on Thursday March 13 th When the Bookworms will be discussing The Story of Arthur Truluv, by Elizabeth Berg.

This is a moving novel about three people who find their way back from loss and loneliness to a different kind of happiness. Arthur, a widow, meets Maddy, a troubled teenage girl who is avoiding school by hiding out at the cemetery, where Arthur goes every day for lunch to have imaginary conversations with his late wife, and think about the lives of others. The two strike up a friendship that draws them out of isolation. Maddy gives Arthur the name Truluv, for his loving and positive responses to every outrageous thing she says or does. With Arthur’s nosy neighbor Lucille, they create a loving and unconventional family, proving that life’s most precious moments are sweeter when shared.
The Bookworms meet on the second Thursday of each month, at 2:00 pm at the Community Center. One member leads the discussion and brings a light snack. Each participant brings their own beverage. Everyone is welcome. Residents with questions can call Sharon Goldsand at 815 -997-2609.

HEART HEALTH MONTH
February is American Heart Health Month. It is the month in which we are reminded to take the time to focus on our Heart’s Health and Safety.
Get regular checkups to get to know your heart
Follow your Doctor’s advice on medications Example: Cholesterol or High Blood Pressure - if these conditions are present: Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, this applies to the whole family.
Exercise regularly, that physical activity, no matter how you get it, it will help you maintain a healthy heart.
If you knowingly have a risk factor, avoid cold extremes, and ask for help with clearing sidewalks and shoveling snow.

Don’t take a chance!
Extra tip: Invest in a home Blood Pressure Kit and Pulse Oximeter, know your numbers!
Stay Safe, Stay Healthy
