WKU loses CUSA win streak, splits series with UTEP

The Hilltoppers, with their 100-game regular-season conference win streak on the line, were defeated on Friday by UTEP in a sweep.

WKU answered back on Saturday, sweeping UTEP to split the weekend series. The weekend leaves WKU second place in Conference USA, with a conference record of 9-1 and an overall record of 18-5, behind UTEP.

“We have a new headline, Western Kentucky has a streak of one in a row,” Head Coach Travis Hudson said.

Hundreds of families filled Fountain Square Saturday afternoon for this year’s Scare on the Square.

Costumed kids and adults lined the streets to trick-ortreat at booths provided by local businesses and community members.

Justine Hester, a 17-year-old senior at Greenwood High School, ran a booth to give out candy and collect children’s books as a part of her Eagle Scout project. She said the project was her way to pass on her own love of reading.

BGPD provides spooks, scares at annual Trunk or Treat

The Bowling Green Police Department transformed the back lot of Gary A. Raymer Police Headquarters into an interwinding path for its sixth annual “Trunk or Treat” event.

Attendees lined up along East Main Avenue near the police headquarters. The street was filled with kids anxiously waiting to enter. Shouts accompanied games of tag in a patch of grass nearby as kids occupied themselves during the wait.

“We want everyone to have a safe place to come and get candy,” Ronnie Ward, BGPD public information officer, said. “All they have to do is come through.”

Women in ancient societies discussed at annual luncheon

WKU faculty, staff and students gathered Friday afternoon to learn about women in ancient history.

The annual Genderations Luncheon series, sponsored by the Gail Martin Faculty Development and Lecture Fund, was held at the Mahurin Honors College and International Center.

After lunch, Kathryn Reetzke, history instructor, gave a presentation titled “Teaching Women and Agency in Ancient World History.” Her discussion was on the primary sources she collected for teaching World History from the perspective of women, where restrictions, laws and cultural norms often attempted to negate women’s power.

WKU Soccer claimed the Conference USA regular season title with a 1-0 victory against Jacksonville State on Sunday.

The Hilltoppers went undefeated through their conference slate with six wins and two ties to claim the number one spot. Last season, the Hilltoppers ended third-to-last in CUSA, winning just one conference game.

WKU Football took down LA Tech on the road in overtime, keeping them afloat in the conference race.

With quarterback Maverick McIvor sidelined, redshirt freshman Rodney Tisdale Jr. stepped in to help the Hilltoppers earn win number six on the year. The win makes them bowl eligible for the seventh consecutive season.
