DEPARTMENTAL OUTCOMES The Art/Photo Department is a college-prep program rooted in the Professional Standards of Art and Design. By the midpoint of a Moeller art students’ senior year, they will have produced a portfolio that will help ensure they are admitted to the most challenging visual arts programs in the country and enable them to be competitive for scholarships. We achieve this through the following outcomes:
1. Verbal Communication: Students have the opportunity to create and present their work every five class periods. Students develop a mastery and become conversant about their own art and the visual art of others. They are able to effectively communicate their idea and defend their work. This is achieved mainly through critique sessions held at the end of each lesson where students are required to give thoughtful explanations (presentations) of their work as was as relevant and constructive feedback and reactions to the work of others. In most cases students will develop skills beyond their peers from other schools.
2. Work Ethic: Students will become self-disciplined through the
creation of art and study. Students will develop into a disciplined artist who creates works of art that clearly and effectively reflect their thoughts, feelings and intentions. Creative work and studio thinking is first and foremost a discipline. An artist’s style is the result of discipline.

Non-Profit Business Management (Honors) offers students first-hand, resume building experience in the world of non-profit organizations. In conjunction with the school Unified for UNIFAT chapter, the students are Interns for the chapter gaining exposure to all aspects of running a non-profit from fundraising to marketing and event planning. Each year, incoming students receive a state-of-the art tablet computer to use throughout their years at Moeller. The school’s commitment to technology can be traced to its Marianist mission to “educate for adaptation and change.” Since opening in 1960, Moeller has used leadingedge technology tools to enhance student learning. In 1995 Moeller began pioneering its One-to-One Laptop Program. Shortly afterward, IBM honored Moeller as a model in technology education.

ENGINEERING PROGRAM A College Credit Plus Program with the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering
ENGINEERING-WHAT IS IT? Many college engineering programs have an introductory engineering course where students learn about engineering. At Moeller we have a college level introductory courses that junior and senior students may take to learn about engineering and earn college credit.
WHAT IS ENGINEERING? Engineering, defined by Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology “is the profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences, gained by study, experience, and practice, is applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of [hu]mankind.”
WHY ENGINEERING IN HIGH SCHOOL? Engineering programs are taught at colleges, but students at Moeller are given the opportunity to learn about engineering in high school. Often students don’t understand what engineering is and what careers are available to engineers. By taking an engineering course, students learn about engineering and earn college credit. Engineering at Moeller is available to Juniors and Seniors.
HOW DO I PREPARE TO ENTER INTO ENGINEERING? Engineering is a course of study at the college level that is based upon mathematics. Students need to take as much math as possible at as high of level to be best prepared for engineering. When selecting students for Engineering, math achievement is a factor for consideration.
WHO TEACHES ENGINEERING AT MOELLER? Mr. Russell Pinkerton is the Engineering teacher at Moeller. Mr. Pinkerton has degrees in chemical and mechanical engineering and has worked 20 years as an engineer. Earlier in his career he was licensed as a professional engineer. He has also taught an Introductory to Engineering Concepts course at a university for three years. Mr. Pinkerton is certified to teach Chemistry, Physics, and Physical Science in high school. He has also taught high school science for eight years including Chemistry, Physics, AP Physics, and Physical Science.
ENGINEERING IS A DUAL CREDIT COURSE… WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Engineering at Moeller is designed to meet the University of Cincinnati (UC) requirements for ENED-1020, Engineering Foundations. ENED-1020 is a required course for UC engineering students. The credit hours are applied to all UC engineering majors and also will be applied to students with any non-engineering major at UC. The two semester credit hours are transferable to all Ohio public colleges/ universities and to most private schools in Ohio as well as most public or private colleges & universities outside of Ohio. Students are advised to contact schools that they want to transfer credit. Moeller offers the following University of Cincinnati Engineering College Credit Plus courses: UC ENED 1020-Engineering Foundations (2 credits) UC ENED 1090-Engineering Models I (2 credits)
WHAT TOPICS ARE COVERED IN ENGINEERING? Engineering Foundations is focused on helping students learn about engineering and engineering careers. Specific goals in the course include: 1. Learning about the engineering design process. 2. Working in small groups solving engineering design problems. 3. Learning about engineering disciplines (civil, electrical, mechanical, chemical, etc.) including working on problems in a variety of disciplines. 4. Learning about the variety of engineering functions/careers that engineers work in (consulting, design, management, manufacturing, research, sales, etc.).
Engineering Models I is a basic MATLAB program which continue in Engineering Models II with more advanced MATLAB topics. Students perform

THE HOUSE SYSTEM THE MOELLER STUDENT GOVERNANCE SYSTEM: Implemented in 2005, the House System has

Three Primary Objectives:

1. To increase pastoral care to each student, 2. To allow students opportunities to build strong personal and collegial relationships, and 3. To encourage every student to develop as a leader. The House System is an alternative form of student governance where students from all grades are divided into separate groups called “Houses” that contain approximately 145 students. Moeller’s six Houses are overseen by a “House Dean” who helps to establish smaller communities of students within the school. Within each House are “Mentor Groups” that consist of approximately 20 students. Each Mentor Group is staffed by a faculty/ staff member, and these groups remain together throughout the students school years. In addition to its primary objectives to enhance pastoral care, encourage interpersonal relationships, and develop leadership skills, the House System increases school spirit.
The Moeller Student Governance System is represented by 6 houses.

THE MARIANIST CUP: All six Houses compete for the Marianist Cup Award annually. This award is given to the House that accumulates the most points in various events and competitions that are academic, athletic, community service, leadership, and school-spirit oriented. Throughout the year, the Houses earn points for a variety of school-spirit activities (i.e., placing the most students on Honor Roll, having the least number of school detentions, attending specific school events, leadership activities, and the annual spring Crusader Games). The goal of the Marianist Cup is to promote healthy competition that encourages academic success, boosts spirit, and enhances school pride.

DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS The Moeller Band program offers students the opportunity to participate in Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band and Pit Orchestra. The Band takes a trip to a major city every two years, to perform, attend workshops, and enjoy cultural highlights. The most recent trip was to Chicago in the spring of 2015. Past trips include several visits to New York City, Boston, and Washington, D.C.

The Moeller Band has produced numerous college music majors and professional musicians over the years, who are now performing in symphony orchestras, Broadway shows, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools, and even college.
The Fine Arts Survey is for students who elect not to participate in a performing group. This course offers the students an overview of the various fine & performing arts. Most students are enrolled in some type of arts class their freshman year.
The Moeller Men’s Chorus is an ethusiastic group of multi-talented students, seniors through freshmen. The Vocal Ensemble is a select group of juniors and seniors who are active in many school and community performances.
Juniors and seniors with significant musical experience may elect to take Music Theory (Honors).
The Chorus has hosted several concerts and workshops with the Kent State and Ohio Nothern University choruses at Moeller, and has traveled to Los Angeles and St. Louis to give perfomances and participate in cultural avctivities, service projects, and sightseeing.
DEPARTMENTAL OUTCOMES The purposes of the Music programs at Moeller High Schools: 1. To develop the musical abilities and provide musical knowledge that will enable each individual to enjoy a lifetime of musical participation. 2. To instill in each student an awareness of the importance of music in the development of the human spirit. 3. To develop in each individual the habits of responsibility and preparation, in an atmosphere of cooperation and teamwork. 4. To develop the leadership potential of each student.
PROJECTS The Moeller Men’s Chorus performs at all the school liturgies during the school year, and present a full concert at the end of each quarter. Many chorus members are also involved in the spring musical theater production. Moeller Band members take private lessons from the best are musicians, and all participate in the OMEA Solo and Ensemble Contest. In recent years approximately 70% have achieved the “Superior” rating, with almost all the rest earning the second rating. One of the highlights of the school year is the Annual Band and Chorus Concert, to be held this year on Sunday, December 13. All are welcome!

DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS In 2014-15, Moeller students completed 26,000 hours of community service. In 2014-15, 93 students received an Outstanding Service Award for completing more than 50 hours for freshmen and sophomores and for completing more than 100 hours for juniors and seniors.
DEPARTMENTAL OUTCOMES Moeller’s mission is to foster young men with a vision of becoming men for Christ. The Marianist Charism calls us to make faith the center of our lives, and the Gospels teach us that the center of faith is a desire to serve and create a just society “on earth as it is in heaven.” All Moeller students are encouraged to create this life of faith by engendering a willingness to serve the larger human community and developing a habit of personal prayer and communial worship.
