Hard water Anglers make most of limited ice fishing

For all the people who head south when winter arrives, there’s one group that actually relishes the arrival of frigid, freezing cold weather: Ice fishermen. These fishing diehards keeps a close eye on temperatures and make frequent trips to local bodies of water to assess ice conditions once freezing starts. When a safe four or more inches of clear ice coats a body of water, it’s time for hard-water fishing season to start. And when the chance arises, you had best not wait to get out, since ice fishing can be a fickle pursuit in central Illinois, where temperatures fluctuate considerably this time of year. This week is a perfect example. While frigid temps have produced plenty of ice, the threat of rain on Friday and beyond means the window of opportunity could be limited. The 47-yearold former Elmwood science teacher and coach will replace Stan Matheny, who’s retiring at the end of this year. Dan Kelch, who’s also Kickapoo Township’s Road Commissioner, said he wants to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest, so he declined to run for the Board’s race. That election already has four new faces competing for seats now held by Dave Harmon, Constance Johnson and John Moon, plus an unexpired term held by Brent Graham.
“There’s no law in Illinois prohibiting a road commissioner from serving on a school board, but there’s a [court] opinion against it,” Kelch said. “I guess the idea was to prevent schools from getting special treatment from road commissioners.
