Higher speed, high axle load on heavy haul trains and extremely climate conditions are the challenges in regard of safety and reliability of trains. In winter ice blocks are impacting the axles. Therefor axles must undergo frequent ultrasonic tests to avoid breaking wheel set axle under the train.
Manual testing of hollow axle has been done in the past The hollow axles have been checked against defect by the SJ ultrasonic specialists with manual ultrasonic equipment. The probes are fixed on a lance which have to be rotated and forwarded by the operator himself. On the screen of the analyzing unit he can see eventually defects. For the operator this type of work is difficult, it is very sensitive and need a lot of practice. Such tests need about 2 hours per axle, per day no more than 6 axles could be tested. It was also not possible to safe the test data in a way which allows to restore them in case of an incident or whatever. The influence of the ultrasonic specialist on the result of testing was critical.
