Otto Muehls Biographie ist komplex und skandalös.

Nicht nur die Anklagen und Verurteilungen, mit denen die österreichischen staatlichen Autoritäten auf seine Aktionen in den 1960er Jahren reagiert haben, sondern vor allem die Gesetzesvergehen in der Kommune sind zweifellos eine Herausforderung an den Rezipienten seines Werkes. Es gilt aber, so wie bei vielen hervorragenden Persönlichkeiten der Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte, sein Werk unabhängig davon der Öffentlichkeit zur Sichtung, Diskussion und Beurteilung zur Verfügung zu stellen.

Otto Muehl's biography is complex and scandalous.

Not only the accusations and condemnations with which the Austrian state authorities reacted to his actions in the 1960s are undoubtedly a challenge to the viewer of his work, but also Muehl's violations of the law within in his Commune. As with many outstanding personalities in the history of art and culture, it is important to make his work accessable to the public for viewing, discussion, and evaluation, regardless of the circumstances.

Das Gesamtwerk des 2013 verstorbenen Künstlers umfasst künstlerisches Schaffen aus einem Zeitraum von mehr als sechs Jahrzehnten, von den Aktionen der 1960er Jahre bis zu seinem an der Algarve entstandenen Spätwerk. Die Ausstellung bei W&K – Wienerroither & Kohlbacher konzentriert sich auf Werke Otto Muehls aus den 1980er Jahren, die durch bewusst gesetzte Stilwechsel gekennzeichnet sind.

The oeuvre of the artist, who died in 2013, covers a period of more than six decades, from the actions of the 1960s to his late work in the Algarve. The exhibition at W&K - Wienerroither & Kohlbacher focuses on works by Otto Muehl from the 1980s, which are characterized by deliberate changes of style.

"Auf die energetischen und ekstatischen Körperdarstellungen der ersten Jahre folgen mehrere Phasen des spielerischen Umgangs mit den Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten der Malerei – seien es Farbfeldmalereien, welche die formalen Möglichkeiten des von Muehl bevorzugten Siebdrucks auf Leinwand übersetzen, ein neuer Blick auf die Landschaftsmalerei, stark gestische und abstrakte Aktionsmalerei, ironische Paraphrasen über Werke Vincent Van Goghs und Pablo Picassos bis hin zu einer Gruppe monochromer Arbeiten mit Gold, denen trotz aller Reduktion eine intensive Materialsinnlichkeit eigen ist.

Diese mit „Das goldene Zeitalter“ betitelte Serie ist vor dem Hintergrund der Produktion des Filmes „Back To Fucking Cambridge“ eine Hommage des Künstlers an Gustav Klimt. Hier schließt sich ein Kreis zwischen der Wiener Moderne um 1900 und der Neoavantgarde des von Otto Muehl maßgeblich mitentwickelten Wiener Aktionismus."

"The energetic and ecstatic depictions of the body in the early years are followed by several phases of a playful approach to the expressive possibilities of painting - color field paintings that translate the formal possibilities of Muehl's preferred silkscreen printing on canvas, a new view of landscape painting, strongly gestural and abstract action painting, ironic paraphrases on works by Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso, and a group of monochrome works with gold, which have an intense material sensuality. Against the background of the production of the film "Back To Fucking Cambridge", this series entitled "The Golden Age" is the artist's homage to Gustav Klimt. It closes the circle between Viennese Modernism around 1900 and the neo-avant-garde of Viennese Actionism, which Otto Muehl played a decisive role in developing.“

SIEBDRUCKMALEREI Otto Muehls Malerei ist in den 1980er Jahren von spielerischen Stilwechseln geprägt. Auf die expressive Figurenmalerei der ersten Hälfte des Jahrzehnts folgen 1986 Bilder, in denen er die kompositorischen Möglichkeiten des Siebdrucks in Malerei umsetzt und die seine bereits um 1968 entstandenen Siebdrucke der Serie „Persönlichkeiten“ bestimmt hatten. Die Bildmotive werden nun aus für die Kamera inszenierten Fotoaktionen ausgewählt und in einer Art Umrissmalerei auf die Leinwand übertragen. Gegenstände und Personen wurden szenisch arrangiert, die dabei entstehenden Fotographien projiziert. Muehl zog die Umrisse und schrieb die jeweilige Farbe auf die noch leeren Flächen. Assistenten führten die detaillierte Farbgebung durch.

SILKSCREEN PAINTING Otto Muehl's paintings of the 1980s are characterized by playful changes of style. The expressive figuative painting of the first half of the decade was followed in 1986 by pictures in which he translated the compositional possibilities of silkscreen printing that had already determined his silkscreens of the series „Persönlichkeiten" (personalities), created around 1968. The motifs are now selected from photo actions staged for the camera and transferred to the canvas in a kind of outline painting. Objects and persons were arranged scenically, the resulting photographs were projected. Muehl drew the outlines and wrote the respective color on the still empty surfaces. Assistants carried out the detailed coloration.

GRUPPENDYNAMISCHE SELBSTDARSTELLUNGEN Die in der Praxis der Kommune aus den Material- und Körperaktionen der 1960er Jahre hervorgehende therapeutische Aktionsanalyse entwickelte sich im Lauf der 1970er Jahre zur fast täglich praktizierten gruppendynamischen „Selbstdarstellung“. Dabei wurden die theatralischen und tänzerischen Improvisationen, die angstfreien und möglichst souveränen Ausdruckmöglichkeiten der Teilnehmer gefeiert und kritisiert. Die angestrebten energetischen und sexuellen Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten des ekstatisch bewegten Körpers stehen im Zentrum der in dieser Zeit entstandenen Werke des Künstlers.

GROUP DYNAMIC PORTRAITS OF THE SELF The therapeutic action analysis that emerged in the practice of the commune from the material and bodily actions of the 1960s developed during the 1970s into the almost daily practice of group-dynamic "selfrepresentation". The theatrical and dancing improvisations, the participants' fearless and as confident as possible expressions were celebrated and criticized. The desired energetic and sexual expressive possibilities of the ecstatically moving body are at the center of the artist's works created during this time.

VAN GOGH SERIE In den 1980er Jahren wurden in der AktionsAnalytischen Kommune am Friedrichshof eine Vielzahl von Filmen produziert. In der 1984 entstandenen Verfilmung des Lebens von Vincent Van Gogh („Vincent“) kritisiert Muehl die in der bürgerlichen Kunstgeschichte betriebene Fetischierung der Rolle des Künstlers und seine Denunzierung als „heroisches Opfer“ und „Märtyrer“. Dabei entstand eine Serie von Bildern in denen er einige der bekanntesten Bildmotive Van Goghs mit könnerhaftem Pinselstrich ironisch paraphrasierte und umdeutete.

VAN GOGH SERIES In the 1980s, a large number of films were produced in the Aktions-Analytische Kommune at Friedrichshof. In the 1984 film adaptation of the life of Vincent Van Gogh ("Vincent"), Muehl criticized the fetishism of the role of the artist and his denunciation as a "heroic victim" and "martyr" that was practiced in bourgeois art history. This resulted in a series of paintings in which he ironically paraphrased and reinterpreted some of Van Gogh's most famous pictorial motifs with masterly brushstrokes.

MATERIAL UND MATERIE In der zweiten Hälfte der 1980er Jahre blickt Muehl auf den um 1960 vollzogenen Durchbruch zur konkret-abstrakten Kunst als Vorbedingung der ab 1963 einsetzenden „Materialaktionen“ zurück. Die damals von ihm erhobene manifestive Forderung einer „Zerstörung des Tafelbildes“, der Gleichsetzung von „Materie ist Farbe“ und der daraus resultierenden virulenten Farbnegation bei der alle Farbigkeit im Graubraun des Urschlamms endet, führt nun zu Bildern in denen er einer riskanten und hedonistischen Farbigkeit frönt. Nach den zwischen 1980 und 1986 entstandenen figurativen Bildern und den Umrissmalereien reinterpretiert sich Muehl als abstrakt-expressiver Maler und variiert die gestischen Möglichkeiten seiner Malerei mit der Souveränität jener formalen Freiheit, die auch von ihm in den Revolutionen der 1960er und 1970er Jahren erkämpft wurde.

MATERIAL AND MATTER In the second half of the 1980s, Muehl looks back on the breakthrough to concrete-abstract art that took place around 1960 as a precondition for the "material actions" that began in 1963. The manifestive demand he made at the time for a "destruction of the panel painting", the equation of "matter is color" and the resulting virulent color negation, in which all color ends in the gray-brown of the primeval mud, now leads to paintings in which he indulges in risky and hedonistic coloration. After the figurative pictures and outline paintings created between 1980 and 1986, Muehl reinterprets himself as an abstract-expressive painter and varies the gestural possibilities of his painting with the sovereignty of that formal freedom that he also fought for in the revolutions of the 1960s and 1970s.

PICASSO SERIE Nach dem Biopic über Van Gogh entstand 1986 im Rahmen der am Friedrichshof produzierten Filme ein ironisches Porträt Pablo Picassos („Picasso“). Der große Maler wird von Muehl zynisch als Künstler charakterisiert, der, von seinem Erfolg überwältigt und von ehrgeizigen Partnerinnen und dem Kunstmarkt kontrolliert, unter seiner Mutation zur extrem produktiven „Malmaschine“ leidet. Im Gegensatz zu Van Gogh, dem unglücklichen und zu Lebzeiten erfolglosen Künstler, kritisiert Muehl am Beispiel Picassos die kapitalistische Pervertierung des Künstlers zum erfolgreichen „Malerfürsten“. So wie bei „Vincent“ entstanden parallel zu den Filmaufnahmen, Arbeiten auf Leinwand und Serien auf Papier in denen er den Stil Picassos satirisch und verspielt stilsicher paraphrasiert.

PICASSO SERIES After the Biopic about Van Gogh, an ironic portrait of Pablo Picasso ("Picasso") was created in 1986 as part of the films produced at the Friedrichshof. The great painter is cynically characterized by Muehl as an artist who, overwhelmed by his success and controlled by ambitious partners and the art market, suffers from his mutation into an extremely productive "painting machine". In contrast to Van Gogh, the unhappy artist who was unsuccessful during his lifetime, Muehl criticizes, using Picasso as an example, the capitalist perversion of the artist into a successful "painter prince". As with "Vincent", parallel to the filming, he produced works on canvas and series on paper in which he satirically and playfully paraphrased Picasso's style in a stylistically confident manner.

LANDSCHAFTSMALEREI Im Sommer 1987 beschäftigt sich Muehl unter anderem mit einer neuen, revidierten Form von Landschaftsmalerei. Dabei wird die Umgebung des Friedrichshofs, die Parndorfer Heide, sein bevorzugtes Motiv. Auf großen Leinwänden entstehen in einer Art Schaumalerei im Freien vor Publikum dick bemalte Bilder mit stark abstrakter Charakteristik. Später beruhigt sich die Gestik, glatte Malflächen und klare dünn aufgetragene Farbigkeit dominieren. Das ursprünglich expressiv gestaltete Motiv der Parndorfer Heide wandelt sich nun zur abstrakten Farbflächenmalerei.

LANDSCAPE PAINTING In the summer of 1987, Muehl was engaged, among other things, in a new, revised form of landscape painting. In the process, the surroundings of Friedrichshof, the Parndorfer Heide, became his preferred motif. On large canvases, he creates thickly painted pictures with strong abstract characteristics in a kind of show painting outdoors in front of an audience. Later the gestures calm down, smooth painting surfaces and clear thinly applied colors dominate. The originally expressive motif of the Parndorfer Heide is now transformed into abstract colored surface painting.

GOLDENES ZEITALTER 1987 entstand die Filmsatire „Back To Fucking Cambridge“, ein ironischer Blick Muehls auf die an Kitsch grenzende kulturgeschichtliche Interpretation von „Wien um 1900“. Zusätzlich zum Film reagiert er mit einer „Das goldene Zeitalter“ betitelten Serie, eine Hommage an Gustav Klimt. Die dabei entstehenden monochromen Goldarbeiten, denen trotz aller Reduktion ein intensiver Materialcharakter eigen ist, sind eine extreme Interpretation der sinnlichen Ornamentik des großen österreichischen Meisters in der Wiener Malerei um 1900. In diesen Bildern schließt sich der Kreis zwischen der Wiener Moderne um 1900 und der Avantgarde der Wiener Aktionisten nach der desaströsen kulturellen und politischen Entwicklung Österreichs in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts.

GOLDEN AGE In 1987 he created the film satire "Back To Fucking Cambridge", an ironic view of Muehl's interpretation of the cultural history of "Vienna around 1900" that borders on kitsch. In addition to the film, he reacted with a series entitled "The Golden Age", a homage to Gustav Klimt. The resulting monochrome gold works, which despite all their reduction have an intense material character, are an extreme interpretation of the sensual ornamentation of the great Austrian master in Viennese painting around 1900. In these paintings, the circle is closed between Viennese Modernism around 1900 and the avant-garde of the Viennese Actionists after the disastrous cultural and political development of Austria in the first half of the 20th century.
