Te Pūkenga is building a national network of integrated learning in Aotearoa New Zealand that better meets the needs of learners, their whānau, employers and the community. StudyLink

StudyLink is a service of the Ministry of Social Development (MSD). The service helps students make choices about their student finances, including Student Allowances and Student Loans. For more information contact StudyLink on 0800 88 99 00 or visit www.studylink.govt.nz.

Student Loans

A Student Loan can be used to help finance your study. It’s made up of three parts – compulsory fees, course-related costs and living costs. The course-related costs part of a student loan help with costs related to your study, for example, stationery, books, computer equipment and travel. The living costs part of a Student Loan can help with your weekly expenses if you don’t qualify for a student allowance. Student Loans have to be paid back. Student loan repayments start when you begin working so it is recommended to borrow the minimum amount required.

Student Allowances

A Student Allowance is a weekly payment to assist with your costs of living while you study full-time. Student Allowances do not have to be paid back. In general, to get a Student Allowance you’ll need to be:

• 18 or over (some 16-17-year-olds can also get it)

• going to study full-time (or limited full-time with StudyLink approval)

• at secondary school or on a tertiary course approved by the Tertiary Education Commission

• a New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or refugee.

As part of a Student Allowance, you may be able to get an Accommodation Benefit if you live away from your parental home while you study, or have a partner and your combined income is less than the threshold. While receiving a Student Allowance you can also work and earn up to a certain amount a week before your allowance payment is affected. For more information contact StudyLink on 0800 88 99 00 or www.studylink.govt.nz

Apply early!

Loan and allowance applications can take up to eight weeks for Studylink to process, and longer if you apply in December or January. Applying early gives you time to provide any supporting information and allows you to get your loan application sorted before your first fee payment is due. You can apply to StudyLink before your enrolment is finalised, so it’s never too early.

RealMe

You will need a RealMe login to apply online and access MyStudyLink. RealMe is a secure service used by many government agencies and other organisations. For more information visit www.realme.govt.nz

Other help

In addition to helping you while you study, StudyLink may also be able to assist you if you are on a study break and can’t find work. This assistance includes help moving from a Student Allowance to a benefit, accommodation costs, ongoing medical and disability costs, work costs, childcare, emergencies, study costs if you are on a benefit and Working for Families Tax Credits from Inland Revenue.

My most invaluable lesson learned in WITT was to acknowledge my value, abilities, and skillsets. This gave me the confidence to complete my bachelor’s degree and to apply at an international engineering consultancy. I am currently three to five years ahead of where a fresh graduate should be. WITT saw more than a student; they saw my value. For that I will always be grateful.

I left school at a young age as I didn’t really enjoy the school experience. I have known since a very early age that I wanted to become a hairdresser. My family and I did some research and we found out about the Youth Guarantee programme at WITT. In 2021 I enrolled on the Level 3 New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing Salon Support and I made some really good friends there. In 2022, I then enrolled in the Level 4 New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Emerging Stylist) programme and now I am currently in my third year and at LA Hair doing my apprenticeship and couldn’t be any happier with the career I have chosen.

I loved every aspect of my horticulture studies at WITT. It helped ignite a true passion of mine with a wealth of knowledge and skills that I am now able to apply at my job in the garden centre at Mitre 10. My wonderful class and experienced tutor made an encouraging and fulfilling learning environment, we still keep in touch today, bonding over all things plants. I look forward to continuing my studies this year with the Organic Primary Production course and am excited to see where my horticulture journey takes me.

Being around like-minded people, all working toward the same goal made our time learning in the workshop more exciting and less of a chore. The tutors are packed full of knowledge from their time working in the industry and provide a safe environment to learn effectively. The Kaitakawaenga team helped me access a Māori Pacific Trades Training (MPTT) scholarship to cover my tools and were always keen to give an extra hand when I needed help. I now have an apprenticeship at a Toyota dealership where I plan to develop myself further and become an expert in my industry.
