BENEDICTINE MONASTERY
TUCSON, ARIZONA
Within Studio created a space that honors the women who built it, sisters who tended every corridor with devotion. The new architecture embraces the historic monastery like a protective gesture, preserving its soul while inviting new life. New linoleum (an extension of the existing materials) from the original build forms a florette in the lobby, echoing the stained glass of the chapel. Historic images line the walls, whispering stories of care, resilience, and quiet beauty.
Every detail is a tribute. Every gesture, symbolic.

BENEDICTINE MONASTERY
Historic Core Preserved | The 1940s Benedictine Monastery, designed by Roy Place, was preserved as a Historic Landmark. Original flooring, arches, corridors, and the chapel remain intact.
Adaptive Reuse | Former nun living quarters were transformed into 37 apartment units, plus amenities like a fitness center, multi-purpose room, and rooftop bar/game room.
New Construction | Two mid-rise buildings added 255 apartments, 3 commercial spaces, and a 2-level parking structure, all designed to complement the Monastery’s presence.
Landscape & Flow | Courtyards, a sunken plaza, and connective outdoor spaces foster a seamless dialogue between old and new, enhancing community and honoring the site’s legacy.

16 sisters traveled from Switzerland to Missouri and to Tucson to build the Benedictine Monastery. DID YOU KNOW?

THE GALLERY ON FIFTH

Designed for the creative soul, The Gallery on Fifth transforms everyday life into a curated exhibition, where the art story begins in the lobby and unfolds floor by floor.
Each level features a distinct theme, from iconic movie posters to famous works of art, with custom imagery adorning every apartment door. Residents live among legends, Grace Kelly, The Goonies, Girl with the Pearl Earring. Each space is a tribute to culture, memory, and imagination.
This is not just a building.
It’s a living gallery.

THE GALLERY ON FIFTH
TUCSON, ARIZONA
At The Gallery on Fifth, 96 fully customized interior doors were designed as permanent architectural installations and became a defining feature of the project, merging storytelling with long term performance.
Each floor carries a distinct theme: Hollywood Icons, Master Artists, Movie Posters, Global Landmarks, Famous Paintings, and Music. Our Creative Director led the concept and execution, developing the themes, sourcing imagery with minimal copyright restrictions, digitally enhancing each piece, and composing full height door graphics that read as complete visual statements.
The team selected Wilsonart® By You (WXY) High Pressure Laminate with RECOVER™, a custom HPL solution with pre applied adhesive. The installation was later featured in a Wilsonart case study for its successful integration within a high traffic residential environment. Within Studio also created a custom directory for each floor, giving tenants context behind the featured figures and artwork.

THE MELBA
PHOENIX, ARIZONA [ON THE BOARDS]
Within Studio reimagined a former 160 room Four Points Sheraton into The Melba, a 104 unit apartment community named in honor of NASA mathematician Melba Roy Mouton. Inspired by her legacy, Within created the brand, name, logo, and thematic concept: a celebration of worldchangers across disciplines. Each floor pays tribute to a genius, Melba Mouton (Math), Rosalind Franklin (Science), Frida Kahlo (Art), Kobe Bryant (Sports), Ray Bradbury (Literature), and the Wright Brothers (Geography). Custom imagery, layered palettes, and curated interiors transform the building into a living tribute to brilliance. This is adaptive reuse with soul, where every corridor tells a story, and every resident lives among legends.
