BHUNGANE MEHLOMAKHULU:
Dancing in Rhythmic Harmony with Sustainable Fashion By Zimkhita Kweza
BORN OF NECESSITY: THE QUARANTINE REVELATION
Born and raised in the bustling heart of Zone 14 Sebokeng, a remarkable artist is forging a unique path at the intersection of ballet and sustainable fashion. Meet Bhungane Mehlomakhulu, a name that resonates with creativity, innovation, and a deep commitment to breaking the mould.
Bhungane's journey epitomizes resilience and ingenuity. His journey into recycling and sustainability began during the 2020 Covid-19 quarantine period when purchasing fabric from stores was not possible. However, this setback did not deter Bhungane; it fuelled his creativity. During the Covid-19 lockdown period, he embarked on a transformative journey, crafting high fashion pieces from discarded materials, including humble Woolworth's shopping bags. This moment marked the organic birth of Bhungane's unique approach to sustainable fashion. “Tailoring and fit is so important for me I was only taught how to make a bucket hat and skirt. I never went to fashion school, so I had to learn everything from YouTube and teach myself a lot,” says Bhungane.
SUSTAINABLE COUTURE WITH A TOUCH OF BALLET
What sets Bhungane's creations apart is his unwavering dedication to sustainability. His sustainable fashion pieces are a testament to his keen eye for beauty hidden within everyday objects. What once seemed like mundane materials are meticulously repurposed, carrying his message of environmental conservation. Each piece is a work of art, an embodiment of the potential that recycling and up cycling hold for the fashion industry. But Bhungane's connection to dance is not confined to the stage; it is woven into the very fabric
