M

y wife Deena’s and my story at Stephen S. Wise Temple is one of evolution, from being total strangers to finding a welcoming community; from getting involved in something that interested us to taking on leadership roles; and from making modest charitable contributions to joining with others in fulfilling philanthropic commitments that make a real difference to the future of our Temple and Schools.

Over the years, as a result of becoming more engaged with Stephen S. Wise Temple, we connected with other Temple members, grew to personally know our Clergy, and appreciated the tremendous importance and value of belonging to a community. That deeper connection, combined with our desire and readiness, was the impetus for us to think more meaningfully about giving something back to our Temple and Schools.

Volunteerism and charitable giving are tangible ways to express one’s gratitude and dedication to particular causes, programs, and values. These are the kinds of opportunities that exist at Stephen Wise every day. Yet, during these challenging economic times, appeals to our Temple members take on additional meaning. Getting involved or being generously supportive become even more purposeful because resources are more and more limited.

Stephen S. Wise Temple is a place to experience life, build wonderful lasting relationships, and to create memories. It has been true for thousands of families over the past nearly fifty years. As for Deena and me, getting there has been one of evolution. But it is one of the best things we did for ourselves, our families and, we hope, the best thing we could have done for our Temple and Schools.

Extend yourselves and you will find our Temple is reaching out at the other end to meet you.

Volunteer your valuable time and talent – they are much needed. And, give meaningfully of your financial resources. Make these your priorities in the coming New Year, and as a result, you will transform lives, including your own, in some extraordinary ways.

Ed Nahmias, along with Linda Rosenson and Janine Kolodny, serve as Board Officers in Charge of Fundraising at Stephen S. Wise Temple. Ed also serves on the Temple’s Executive Committee and the Boards of Milken Community High School, The Center Theatre Group, and Para Los Ninos, a community service organization in South Central Los Angeles.

@Noteworthy A Commitment to Jewish Education

On Friday, June 1, 2012, over 1200 people, seated in our Sanctuary for Shabbat services, witnessed a memorable evening of recognition and celebration as our community honored Metuka Benjamin, Director of Education at Stephen S. Wise Temple and Schools.

We heard about an unshakable commitment to Jewish education, to academic excellence, and the many opportunities for our children which are unparalleled in any other Jewish community across America. Built upon decades of achievement, our Schools have produced intelligent, articulate, confident, and deeply committed young Jews who are a source of tremendous pride for our Temple, their families and friends.

That same Friday evening, we also witnessed the creation of the Metuka

@B’nai Mitzvah

Benjamin Scholarship Fund. This new fund is not only a declaration of Metuka’s dedication to Jewish education and our Jewish future, but a proactive and practical response to the exploding need for financial assistance by those families who cannot afford the full costs of educating their children.

Our Temple and leadership are deeply committed to ensure that every family who wants a strong Jewish and secular education for their children be afforded one. Over the past several years, our economy has made this more challenging as requests for assistance have greatly outweighed current available funding. With the establishment of the Metuka Benjamin Scholarship Fund, we have taken a giant step forward. And yet, we must continue to grow the fund each and every year because, at least for the foreseeable future, Jewish education is no longer affordable to increasing numbers of our families.

Our Patron & Sponsor Program Now in its 16th year, the Patron & Sponsor Program has provided millions

of dollars to our Temple and has allowed for the expansion of many outstanding services, activities, and programs offered to all members of our Temple community. The funds raised have also enabled hundreds of young singles and couples the opportunity

to join Stephen S. Wise Temple at very affordable rates. Our Temple would look very different if it were not for our Patron & Sponsor Program.

Last year alone, over 300 Temple families provided nearly $800,000 in support. Some were first time members, and others have been loyal to the Program since its inception. Last year was also the first time a concerted effort was made by Patron & Sponsor leadership to reach out to our School families and their active participation in the program.

NEW! Vessels of Hope and Inspiration

S’lihot Saturday, September 8

Start the year off right with our Vessels of Hope and Reflection. All the adults and children in our community are invited to visit the Sacred Vessel Displays at the Temple and write their thoughts for 5773 and place them in the vessels.

Your hopes and reflections will be incorporated into the artwork that will decorate our Temple Sukkot during the first week in October.

As the month of Elul draws to a close, the mood of repentance becomes even more intense.

We continue our spiritual preparation for the Days of Awe with a S’lihot service, allowing the powerful music of the holidays to penetrate our soul. The ultimate goal of S’lihot is to seek forgiveness from God and others whom we have wronged and, most importantly, to improve ourselves in the coming year.

After the success of last year’s pilot program, Rabbis Medwin and Anderson will head to the beach with our Wise community to symbolically “send off” their sins into the waters of the sea and set our sights on the new year to come.
