On behalf of the Minnesota Youth Athletic Services (MYAS) and the Spring Lake Park High School Swim Team, we welcome you to the 2023 Midwest Regional Swim Meet. We look forward to another great event. We have athletes competing from different seven states this weekend!
We are excited to be showcasing some of the best talent at one of our nation’s best facility, the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Please treat the facility with respect.
As always, safety is our top priority. Please make sure to adhere to all meet and facility policies. We are expecting large crowds – please do your part to encourage a positive atmosphere. We are all here to have a memorable experience!
We would especially like to thank the University of Minnesota, the meet officials, and our volunteers, who commit so much of their time and dedication to ensure a fun and successful, meet. We are extremely appreciative and know this meet would not happen without their hard work.

Policies and Procedures
Pool deck access is only available to coaches and athletes with approved credentials. Coaches and swimmers must show credentials every time they access the deck. There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this policy.
• No Glass is allowed.
• Any person (including swimmers and coaches) caught handing or receiving anything over the railing (spectator seating) will be immediately removed from the event.
• Nothing may be brought or carried behind the blocks. This includes bags and shoes.
• The catwalk between the diving well and the east pool may only be utilized by meet staff and swimmers who are getting ready to swim in that pool. It may not be used as a walkway to the other side of the pool.
• No cameras will be allowed on the pool deck – they may be used in spectator areas only. Only the official meet photographer (We Got Game Sports Photography) will be allowed to have cameras on the deck.
• Any coach, swimmer or other person found to be in violation of any of these policies will be immediately removed for the duration of the meet. Depending on the nature of the violation, the entire club (affiliated with the offender) is subject to removal from the meet.

• I will encourage good sportsmanship by demonstrating positive support and complete respect for all athletes, coaches, meet staff, officials and spectators at all times.
• I will place the emotional well-being of my teammates and opponents ahead of my personal desire to win.
• I will demand a sports environment that is free from drugs, tobacco, and alcohol and will refrain from their use at all MYAS sporting events.
• I will do my best to remember that youth sports are supposed to be FUN and that winning and losing are part of everyone’s experience.
• I will express my concerns through the proper channels in a dignified manner.
• I will respect and adhere to the rules governing eligibility and competition. This includes, but is not limited to, policies set in place by the MYAS and the U of M Aquatic Center.

At times, it’s interesting to take a look back at former Midwest Swim Regional Meet participants and check out what they’re up to now…
The article below was published in the 2012 MSRM Program featuring Michael Andrew who was 12 years old at the time. Michael went on to set twelve MSRM Meet Records and two National Swim Records that still stand as of March 2023. You can see him listed multiple times in the Meet Records portion of this Fan Guide.
Fast forward 10+ years and Michael has certainly made his mark on the sport of Swimming. The pinnacle of his many accolades is an Olympic Gold Medal in the 2020 Summer Games in the 4x100 meter medley relay while setting a world record. He has won 78 medals at Swimming World Cup circuits.
The Midwest Regional Swim Meet has showcased some of the finest young swimmers in the nation for nearly two decades. These athletes have gone on to be high school and even collegiate stars. However, perhaps none have been better than Michael Andrew. Only 12 years old, he currently holds 17 individual Midwest Regional Swim Meet records. What makes this kid so successful? What is next for such a young athlete who has already achieved so much success?
Michael and his family will be the first to admit if you want to be the best, you have to work harder and want it more than your competition. Michael ONLY trains Race Specific Training. Every yard he swims is specific for the race he plans to compete in. It is an anaerobic based training program, which means he trains at race pace. For example, when training for the 100 freestyle, he will swim 20 x 25’s at 100 pace with repeats. It is all about neural patterning and this training method allows Michael and Peter (father and coach) to almost predict what will happen on race day. He swims no “junk yards” and does not use any “tools” such as kick boards or hand paddles. The Andrews place high emphasis on rest and recovery because “a tired swimmer is an imperfect swimmer.” Perfecting technique is their goal, and so far, so good.

• 100 Freestyle Time: 47.95 Set 3/9/12 at Topeka, KS

• 200 Breaststroke Time: 2:13.33 Set 1/7/12 at Independence, MO
• 100 IM Time: 54.66 Set 12/11/11 at U of Maryland

Michael qualified for his first sectional meet this season. His parents aren’t sure if any 12 year old boys have ever competed at sectionals before in individual events but for Michael, it was a huge step toward his goal of becoming a professional swimmer. It is easy to look at the seven records listed above and be impressed, but consider this: Michael has actually set 14 new national age group records this season. The problem? He keeps breaking his own records!
His mom, Tina says, “Michael stands out from other elite swimmers because he is phenomenal in all four strokes. He has an incredible feel for the water and has an extraordinary ability to implement stroke adjustments immediately. He truly has the whole package...he is naturally gifted with the perfect swimmer’s physique (6’2” at age 12, huge hands and size 14 feet!). He hates losing more than he loves to win, he has incredible vigor, excellent sportsmanship, and, of course, a super, crazy, supportive family!”
According to the Andrews, “Swimming is one of the greatest and safest sports that teaches kids life skills. he fact that it is not celebrated on the level of basketball or football is unfortunate.”
That won’t stop Michael. In fact, nothing will stop Michael. He wants to be a professional swimmer. He loves to travel and he dreams of competing in international meets and having opportunities to see the world. Michael’s short term goals include qualifying for Junior Nationals and Grand Prix Meets. Note: Michael did qualify for the MN Grand Prix in the 100 breaststroke prior to the entry deadline, but due to high demand and cap for that meet, he was unable to get in as entries closed shortly after they opened. For this weekend, Michael’s focus is on the Midwest Regional Swim Meet. Tina says, “When the kids first started swimming, MYAS was our first ‘big’ meet and it became a signature meet for us. Michael has certain pools that he loves to swim in and the University of Minnesota is one of them. The logistics are perfect, it’s a great pool, convenient accommodations, excellent competition, as well as a fun event to catch up with an old friend.”
Michael was recently featured in Sports Illustrated for Kids and ultimately hopes to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Tina says, “For me, Michael’s most impressive accomplishment to date is how he is handling everything and how he conducts himself. Even though he is super competitive, he is humble, gracious, and has excellent sportsmanship. Michael believes that God has blessed him with a talent and that his ability, his health, well being, and opportunities are all a gift from God.”
There is no question that the future holds endless possibilities for Michael Andrew and he will undoubtedly tackle those challenges head on. He will not be outworked, outsmarted or outclassed by anything that crosses his path...and for those reasons, he will be successful.
