Welcome to the largest youth basketball tournament in the nation
IN 1991, THE FIRST MYAS GRADE STATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS WERE HELD WITH 22 TOTAL GIRLS TEAMS. FAST FORWARD 32 YEARS...
1,540 TEAMS ARE PARTICIPATING IN THE 2023 EVENT.
LARGEST GRADE STATE EVER.
CULTURAL INTERACTION THROUGH SPORT
WE ARE ONE TEAM
WELCOME TO THE 2023 MYAS GRADE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS!
The entire Minnesota youth basketball community should be commended on their commitment to providing the safest environment possible for our youth basketball participants as we continued to deal with various strains of the pandemic. We once again saw a unified effort of the 160+ Minnesota Youth Basketball Alliance member associations and teams’ practices and competitions were conducted in a safe way during the 2022-2023 winter community-based winter traveling basketball season.
We would like to thank the efforts made by MYBA member associations leaders, the youth basketball coaches, who volunteer countless hours of their time providing opportunities for youth through basketball and the dedicated parents who spend countless hours transporting their son or daughter to practices and games and supporting them throughout their youth basketball experience.
As we move into March Mayhem – Minnesota style, the entire MYAS internal/external staff and our wonderful host groups are committed to ensuring the highest quality of programming by providing a safe, positive, and productive experience for the participating teams during the culminating event of the Minnesota winter community-based youth basketball season.
The Grade State Basketball Championship is in its 32nd year of existence and is the premier event of the 2022-2023 winter community-based youth basketball season. It features youth travel teams of all levels of play, from over 160 associations around the great state of Minnesota. Grade State should be about positively showcasing the kids and competition, not the negative unsportsmanlike behavior of players, coaches, and spectators that can creep into youth events.
During the 2023 tournament, we are emphasizing sportsmanship with our strategic partner, Youth 1st . A Conduct 1st environment will be instilled at each playing location, and messaging before and during the event will focus on the importance of creating this environment during each state tournament game. Each participating team (coaches, players, and spectators) that displays good behavior and positive conduct during each of their games, as voted upon by the game officials, will be recognized as Youth 1st Team Award winners following the Championships.
The 2023 MYAS/Youth 1st/Conduct 1st environment at each Grade State playing location will emphasize sportsmanship, fan behavior and retention of officials. As a leader in youth sports throughout the great state of Minnesota, we want to be proactive and impact participants (youth athletes, coaches, parents, and officials) in a positive way.
The MYAS wishes the 1,538 participating teams nothing but the best as you begin your journey toward the elusive state championships title. Each role (coach, parent/spectator, and officials) of the youth sports experience must:
REMEMBER … It’s about the kids.
I WILL … Keep my competitive energy in check. I WILL ALWAYS … Treat officials and opponents with respect.
This tournament marks the end of the 2022-2023 winter-community based season. Let's have a spirit of appreciation for each of the practices and games and tournaments that remain, and not one of fear, and anxiety and anger about cancellations, quarantines, a call that didn’t go your way or a game that may be running behind schedule. Our kids are not only depending on us, but they're also watching us.
Thank you for your time and dedication to youth basketball!

The state of sports officiating
We are experiencing a mass exodus of youth sport officials which is resulting in Cancelled games and reduced opportunities.
Remember… it’s about the kids.
I will… keep my competitive energy in check.
I will always… treat officials and opponents with respect. Help promote a conduct environment
No officials = no games
Of officials are 55 years old or older Rank verbal abuse as the #1 reason why officials quit Survey data provided by:

At the new MYAS Spring Prospects Combine, players will test their physical and basketball skills against their age/grade group and also perform in front of potential club/association coaches looking for players for their club teams. This 75-minute workout will give players an opportunity to be tested in physical skills important to success as a basketball player. We are partnering with Flexx Sports on all testing and players will also have an opportunity to create a personal profile that can be referred to and updated as they grow.
The MYAS Spring Prospects Combine is open to players in grades 5th-12th and limited to the first 32 players to sign up for each session.
The Gopher State Spring Basketball League is a great supplement to the Spring/Summer tournaments. Games are played on Sundays in the Twin Cities Metro Area. All teams are welcome to participate. You are even welcome to put your own team together!
Choose your location! We will host a league in the North Metro and South Metro.
Space is limited - register early!
