OHFHS Project: Every year, NHS, Student Council, and OHFHS team up to raise money for a certain project. This year’s project is buying new motorcycles and putting running water in a high school, both in Zambia, Africa. This year’s goal is to raise $32,000.

Students from Wisco had the opportunity to visit Martin Luther College (MLC) in New Ulm, Minnesota. They visited classes, toured the campus, and talked to college students. They stayed overnight in the dorms with the college students. During the first focus trip, students had the opportunity to watch the MLC basketball game. During the second trip, the students had an opportunity to see the Crucible.

Dance: The Wisco Dance team traveled to Florida in January to compete at nationals.

Cheer: The Wisco Cheerleaders went to LaCrosse to compete at the State Championships. They cheered well, but did not make it to the finals.

Girls’ Basketball: The girls’ basketball team played hard in the regional semi-final, but lost against Tosa East with a final score of 43-30.

Boys’ Basketball: The boys’ season ended at the regional final against Milwaukee Washington with a final score of 75-66.

Lucas Roecker qualified for state in wrestling this year. He finished his season with a record of 39-10 overall. During the season, he earned the titles of Milwaukee Lutheran Tournament, Conference champion, and Regional Champion.

He was also a Sectional Runner-up. Congratulations on a great season!

On April 25th, Wisco will be hosting a blood drive. Sign up and you could save 3 lives! The American Red Cross has had a shortage over the winter months, and we can help!

The Greatest Showman

About the movie: The Greatest Showman was inspired by the life of P.T. Barnum, a man who became great out of nothing.

Follow along to watch P.T. Barnum as he goes from a tailor’s son to the “King” of the circus. Barnum finds the love of his life, stays in contact with her, and eventually marries her. They are happy with their lives even after Barnum is layed off from his job.

Barnum now has two daughters, and he has bought a museum. Go see this movie to find out how he becomes a success.

Historical Accuracy: While the movie follows the basic storyline of P.T. Barnum, there are some differences. For example, the characters of Anne Wheeler and Phillip Carlyle do not exist in history.

Also, even though Jenny Lind is a real person, there is no true evidence of Barnum and Lind falling in love with each other.

The Great Debate Over Minimum Wage

By Blessed Ikuobolati For over eight years now, minimum wage in the United States has been $7.25 an hour. Though some states have their own variations of the minimum wage, such as California with a current wage of $10.50 per hour, speculation has been the same: Should we increase the minimum wage in America? It may seem like a one sided argument at first, considering that many people feel more money is the simple solution, but before making such a decision it is critical to look at both sides of the argument, taking into account the short and long-term effects.

Many will argue that the answer to minimum wage is to increase it. According to the article “The Wages of Wage Fear” by Bill Emmott, “Without a sharp increase in wages - mainly statutory minimum wages - populism will continue to thrive, and most Western economies will be saddled with slow growth.” Populism is a term that describes highlighting the concerns of the average individual, or appealing to ordinary people. This can be used in instances such as elections or debates in order to gain favor with the average person who may feel like their interests are not being met. The term populism can be applied to the current minimum wage. Many people find it hard to support themselves and their families with the current minimum wage. This is especially true for those with larger families who try to provide for the needs of their family with such low wages. The article, “What Life is Like for a Low Wage Worker,” written by correspondent Briana Vannozzi, quotes Director Carl E. Van Horn of John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development by stating, “If you work 40 hours a week, 52 weeks of the year, which most people don’t, you’d make around $17,000 a year. That’s just around the poverty wage for a family of two.” For families living in these conditions, the increase of minimum wage may increase their ability to provide the necessities they require.

Despite the obvious positives of increasing the minimum wage, there are still negatives that should be examined. For example, if the minimum wage were to increase, how willing would employers be to pay their employees? The article “Does a Higher Minimum Wage Pay Off,” written by Michael Hiltzik discusses a study done by the University of Washington about the effect of a higher minimum wage in Seattle. The article says that, “The group’s initial report...found that the city’s low-wage workers earned more, but that effect was muted by reduced hours, and the effects canceled out each other almost completely.” It brings up the point that even if the wage were to increase, how would business owners and managers respond? Workers may get reduced hours to balance out their increased earnings. Inversely, it may even be possible to assume that lowering minimum wage could encourage bosses to give workers more hours and pay them accordingly. This shows that increasing minimum wage does have its risks and should be planned out carefully.

The Olympic Games:

Not many things in the world are able to unite a whole country, but one thing that has almost every country cheering is the Olympics.

Held every two years, the Olympics is a special event that showcases the best athletic talent from all of the participating countries.

The Winter Olympics includes 15 events--bobsleigh, ice hockey, curling, snowboarding, figure skating, speed skating, skeleton, freestyle skiing, short track speed skating, biathlon, alpine skiing, luge, cross country skiing, nordic combined, and ski jumping. The location changes every 4 years, and this year it was located in the city of Pyeongchang in South Korea. This city is unique with its vast array of colors.

Bright and popping colors are used often in advertisements and regular everyday life.

One issue with this location was its cold temperatures. Many of the workers involved in the Olympics expressed concern. The makeup crew dealt with issues of their cosmetics freezing to the athletes’ faces. Along with that, 13 staff members were injured from the high winds. Despite this issue, Pyeongchang was a beautiful place for the 2018 Olympic games.

One other change noticed in these Olympic games was the name change for Russia. Athletes from Russia were caught using performance enhancing drugs in the past games.

Because of this, the International Olympic Committee decided to suspend Russia from competing in the 2018 Winter Olympics. Russian athletes were not be allowed to represent their na-

tion; instead, they competed under the name “Olympic Athletes from Russia.” In addition, their nation’s flag and anthem were not used, but the official flag and anthem of the Olympics was used instead. However, that is not all; the Russia Olym-

pic Committee will have to pay $15 million for the doping investigation and also give money to the Independent Testing Authority. This group is not only testing athletes for performance enhancing drugs but also

: PyeongChang 2018 working to stop the use of the drugs.

Another change is that North Korea has been allowed to have athletes compete. The athletes from North Korea seemed to be under-prepared as their best performance was a thirteenth place finish. The thirteenth

place finish came from Ryom Tae Ok and Kim Ju Sik in the pairs skating. They were the only ones who qualified in the pre-games. South Korea also allowed North Korea to have players join their hockey team.

Even though they lost every single one of their matches, they won emotional support from the South Koreans.

Finally, what some might consider the most important part of the Olympics is the athletes and the medals. The United States of America has quite a few popular athletes such as Shaun White (snowboarding), Adam Rippon (figure skating), Gus Kenworthy (freestyle skiing), Alex and Maia Shibutani a brother and sister duo (figure skating), Jessie Diggins (cross-country skiing), and also Chloe Kim (snowboarding).

Everyone can get into the Olympic game spirit by supporting their country. With a multitude of events and athletes, it is easy to cheer for a favorite performer or event. The Olympics are a great way to celebrate nationalism for one’s country even when people are divided about other topics.

Women’s History

Women in the Military

In the early years of the United States, women were typically restricted to tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and taking care of children.

As time went by, women decided to take action to work toward equality. The right to vote was granted in 1920, and in 1948 women could officially serve our country in various branches of the military.

There was much that led up to the official decision that women could serve in the military. In 1782, Deborah Sampson, a woman from Massachusetts, served in George Washington’s army during the Revolutionary War. She disguised herself as a man named Robert Shurtleff and was discovered after being wounded. Sampson was not the only one. In the Civil War, many women served as spies or soldiers disguised as men.

On March 17, 1917, Loretta Perfectus Walsh became the first woman to ever enlist in the U.S. Navy. Not only was she the first woman to enlist, in the Navy, but she was also the first to reach the rank of Chief Petty Officer (CPO).

In addition, many women were able to work with the military earlier than 1948 by serving as nurses and supplying food and other services from home.

In February of 1945, five women named Olivia Hooker, Dor-

othy Winifred Byrd, Julia Mosley, Yvonne Cumberbatch, and Aileen Cooke, were the first African American women to join the Coast Guard (SPARs).

Women and men can be very different in terms of body strength.

Women in the military often face greater risks of illness and injury than men do. Men have more testosterone in their bodies than women which can grant them greater muscle mass and stronger bones.

Women also have smaller hearts which require more blood to be pumped per minute. This doesn’t necessarily mean that men are better, it only means that women often have to work harder.

There are many benefits to allowing women into the military. The obvious one is that it is a step toward true equality but there are others as well. For instance, with women being able to serve in the military, the military is larger. According to the Pew Research Center, a census in 2015 states about 1.3 million troops were in active-duty including the U.S. Coast Guard. That number is continually increasing now that women

are eligible to fight.

All U.S. veterans, regardless of their gender, deserve the utmost respect and thanks for giving up their lives, time, and sometimes sanity just so that everyone in America is able to live the way they do. Thank you.

It is truly amazing to be able to see how technology has helped society advance. Maybe soon, there will be other types of vehicles that will drive themselves. All anyone can do at this point is to wait for what the future of advanced technology holds.
