Phone Addiction

Why are an increasing number of people becoming addicted to cell phones?

As a society, people tend to focus greatly on how they communicate through electronic devices- especially through cell phones. Today, many people don’t set their phones down, even though they are aware of healthy ways to conserve phone usage. The way the world works is drastically changing because of cell phones. According to USA Today, “Apple says that iPhone users unlock their phones 80 times a day. We tap, type and swipe our smartphones more than 2,600 times a day, on average.”

In an article titled, “Why You’re Addicted to Your Phone … and What to do about It,” the author gives readers some insight on why more and more people are becoming addicted to phones. Researchers and specialized scientists often compare phone addiction to drug addiction.

These devices lure us into the cyber

world where we just can’t abandon it. This article tells readers that there is a chemical that helps this addiction process. This chemical is called dopamine, and it is often released when finding pleasure in what a person likes to do.

The writer, Jeff Stibel, compares this concept to both gambling and the indepth use of phone addiction. Stibel states that what dopamine does: “It’s the same principle behind gambling, and this is the reason it is such a common addiction. Our brain’s need for dopamine makes us pull that slot machine arm just one more time, even if we know rationally there is little reward in gambling. Incidentally, dopamine is also the driver of heroin and cocaine addiction. These drugs flood the brain with

imitation dopamine, creating a euphoria not unlike that which occurs when you get a few dozen “likes” on your latest Instagram selfie.”

What are some tips to unplugging?

After sharing the effects of phone addiction, sources tell the reader what they can do to unplug from their phones. The New York Times Upfront offers a few tips regarding how teens and adults can find ways to unplug. The writer, Ana Homayoun, gives readers four steps to control phone addiction or use.

Her steps are as follows: 1. make a plan, 2. monitor usage, 3. take a time out, and 4. be a role model. She goes more into depth on how to put these plans into action. By making a plan, the readers are encouraged to develop family procedures concerning how and when devices should

be used. One of the most important steps is to unplug. When taking time outs, a teen’s apps should be disabled, which allows a person to foucs on other things. Psychologist Larry Rosen believes that one of the most critical things is to remove cell phones from a teen’s room at night, so that they do not have problems falling asleep.

How do phones affect our society?

The article, “Are you addicted to your phone?” explains the effects that cell phones leave on the society of today’s teens. “In Chi-

na, an estimated twenty-four million people ages six to twenty-nine are internet addicts.” The article tells readers that if this pattern of phone addiction keeps happening, the world will start to have teens— eventually adults—with underdeveloped mentality.

Some people are demanding some apps, including Facebook, be disabled saying they pose a threat to their child’s mental health. The article, “The Impact of Mobile Technology on People’s Lives,” states that cell phones have been affect-

ing people physically. Today, many people have become lazier because they rely on their phone more than their own knowledge. Instead of thinking about problems that human beings are capable of solving, they rely on companies like Google to answer their questions. As people start to rely on computers too much, they will start to lose brainstorming strategies.

Therefore, it is important for teens to unplug from their phones and relax.

So put down your phone and talk to the people around you. Your brain will thank you.

High School Jobs

Having a job in high school can be extremely difficult. With responsibility and correct time management, high schoolers are able to maintain having a job while being in school. Fitting schoolwork and extracurriculars into one’s day can be tough, but adding a job on top of that can be even tougher.

Advantages

There are many advantages that come with having a part time job during high school. Acquiring a job can give young adults a sense of accomplishment and independence.

Most teens have spent their whole life before age eighteen being reliant on their parents. Having a job gives

teens a better understanding of what it is like to provide for themselves.

It can be a truly liberating experience for them to start making their own money to help pay for food and clothes. Brandon Williams, a junior at Wisco, said, “Yes [I’m glad I have a job], because I have my own money, and I don’t always have to ask [my parents for money].” This helps teens to feel more independent. It is important that teens are able to prepare themselves with these experiences before becoming adults.

Additionally, being employed can give young scholars a better appreciation of the value of money. When teens spend hours working to make their own money, they will in turn start to realize the actual value of it. In this current era, children as young as ten years of age often receive phones that can barely fit in their pockets as well as receiving expensive clothes and shoes. Furthermore, having a part time job can help teens improve their communication skills. It is important for high school students to learn to communicate with adults in a work environment. Students can also learn how to network by getting to know their managers and coworkers. Also, students learn that it is important to use integrity and honesty when completing tasks at their jobs. Additionally, arriving to work regularly and on time aids in developing time management skills, which also helps to teach responsibility.

Drawbacks

Even though there many advantages to having a part time job in high school, there are also some drawbacks. Working at a job requires responsibility, and with responsibility comes stress. Teens are already under a lot of pressure because they are trying to fit many things into

their lives such as doing homework, maintaining a high GPA, spending time with a boyfriend/girlfriend, or friends, and family. A job can add even more stress onto a teen. Extreme stress can cause depression, especially when the stress results in failure. According to suicide.org, about “20% of all teens experience depression before reaching adulthood.”

Another disadvantage of having a job in high school is that it can cause a student to feel exhausted, which may lead a student to be absent from school and other events.

Often students go to school for eight hours, and then work another four or more hours at a job. When they come home, they still have homework to complete. Jobs that cater to young adults may not always take this into consideration when making out a schedule. If a student is working 3-4 nights during the week, this can become overwhelming for the teen. A teen may be working

too many hours, leaving no time to complete homework. Perla De Santiago said, “ I have been late to school more often, since I tend to oversleep [since having a job]. I’m also tired all the time, and it’s not like I can just go to sleep after I get done with my shift, because sleep is

So whether a job is right for you is up to you and your parents to decide. Whatever you decide, be sure you can balance all of the parts of your life with a job.

Unusual Pets

Capybara Capybaras are social, water-loving pets, known to be the largest rodents in the world. The Capybara’s name means “grass eater” or the “one who eats slender leaves” and can be described as a giant guinea pig.

They can grow to be 4 feet long and usually weigh over 100 pounds. Considering that they are social animals, they need to be kept in groups in order to prevent them from getting depressed. These animals need plenty of room and care, but they make loving pets for those who have the resources to take care of them.

Fennec Fox

Fennec Foxes are tiny, big eared foxes with a personality similar to a dog. They love to run around, dig, and play as they do in the wild, so they can be a handful. When outside of a fully secured area, Fennec Foxes need to be leashed, because they tend to run and be energetic.

Hedgehogs are quiet, solitary animals.

They are nocturnal, so they can be good pets for anyone who spends more time at home during the night. Unfortunately, they are not good with small children because they need to be handled carefully and gently. They can be very skittish and scare easily, so it may take time and patience for them to get used to their owner. Nevertheless, they make sweet, adorable pets for anyone who can care for them.

Skunk Though this animal has a reputation for being smelly, many skunk owner’s disagree.

Domesticated skunks do not have the gland used to emit their notorious, rancid spray.

Curious and clever, skunks can provide companionship for someone looking for a uniquely odd pet that will turn visitors’ heads. With their rambunctious nature, skunks do not like being confined in a cage for too long. Skunk owners have to make sure their house is skunk proof to prevent escape and prevent their skunk to steal household objects out of curiosity.
