Now that the inauguration is over, Donald Trump, his wife, Melania, and their son, Barron are entering the White House ready to experience life in a new way.

Once the owner of the Miss USA pageant and now the 45th president of the United States of America, Donald J. Trump and his family have entered into the White House. He has many plans for his next four years in office.

He is focusing on negotiating trade deals, rolling back regulations, and repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act. Trump said, “I’ve asked my transition team to develop a list of executive actions we can take on Day 1 to restore our laws and bring back our jobs.” Though he lost by 2.8 million popular votes, he won by gaining over 300 electoral votes.

Melania Trump, who is originally from Slovenia, became a citizen of the United States of America

in 2006. She is only the second First Lady born outside of the United States. The first since Louisa Adams

(born in London), wife to John Quincy Adams, the nation’s sixth president. Melania Trump and is planning on focusing on the issues of bullying, and the negative effects of social me-

dia on children.

President Donald Trump, however, is using social media to his advantage. He believes that it is a way for him to connect to the American people directly, without having the media give out false information.

Trump is quoted as saying, “If the press would cover me accurately & honorably, I would have far less reason to ‘tweet.’ Sadly, I don’t know if that will ever happen!”

Ten-year-old Barron Trump is going to be the first son (only daughters in recent years), under 18 to reside in the White House since J.F.K. Jr. in the 1960’s. However, he will remain in New York with his mother, so that he can attend school until the end of the year.

Valentine Surprise

Roses are red, violets are blue, but what should someone get for his/her Valentine this season?

It is the time of the year that couples love and those who are single wish would be over; that day is Valentine’s Day! On this day, sweethearts often buy something special for each other. Although many people enjoy the holiday and love the idea of getting an adorable and sentimental gift from that special someone, they may not always know what to get.

Here are some ideas . . .

Gift Ideas for Girls

For guys who don’t know what to get for their girlfriend, there are a lot of gifts that she will adore.

Not all girls like roses and chocolates for a Valentine’s Day gift. Girls look for originality and something from the heart. Some girls do, however, enjoy the traditional hearts and flowers, but over time it can get a little cliché. Depending on what her interests are, guys should get something that is meaningful and shows that thought was put into the gift.

If she likes food, then perhaps buying her favorite candy, chips, and drink could be a nice, inexpensive gesture. If she likes surprises, get her a big teddy bear with her favorite flowers.

Maybe, she would prefer just spending the day with her boyfriend, so take her out to eat at her favorite restaurant and let her

pick the movie. If you both love the same TV show, bring some snacks and watch a season of it together. A trip to the zoo, the Domes, or Discovery World would also be a great date.

There are always things to make just at home. Perhaps a homemade Valentine’s Day card and some cookies.

Get creative.

Gift Ideas for Guys

Getting that important guy something special for Valentine’s Day can be difficult. One idea is buying that amazing new video game that he has been eying for weeks; however, a gift does not have to be expensive. Since most guys love food, get him some of his favorite snacks and chocolates, bake him his favorite dessert, or make him a special dinner. If your boyfriend typically pays when you go out, take him out to dinner and let him choose the movie. If you

both love music, buy tickets to a concert. If that is out of your price range, relax while listening to his favorite band or sing along karaoke style. Another great activity is to plan a night of bowling, ice skating at Red Arrow park followed by some coffee, or arcade games at Dave and Busters.

Have an inside joke that is funny every time? Get something as a reminder of the best night or funniest night together. A card made at home can be a perfect Valentine’s Day gift.

No matter the simplicity of the gift, he will appreciate it if it comes from the heart.

Celebrate Friendship

Valentines is about love, but that also applies to friendships. Get a group together for a marathon of TV shows or choose a favorite actor or genre of films and enjoy their movies.

Girls can have a spa or makeover party, or set up some lights and have a dance party in the basement.

And, games are always fun! Plan an activity such as making tie dyed shirts, or buy something at a craft store and have a painting party. Don’t just sit home, get a group together and go ice skating, or roller skating. Make Valentine’s Day one that is never forgotten.

What gifts should we give and why do we give gifts anyway?

Christmas is one of the most anticipated times of the year. It’s a time for giving, being with family, and for celebrating the birth of Jesus. The thought of receiving gifts is one of the traditions that is in many children’s minds during the holidays.

According to Dana Hinders, Christmas gifts have been given since ancient Roman times when they exchanged gifts on New Year’s Day in order to celebrate the winter solstice. The idea of gift giving to show love and affection is also reflected in the Bible story of the wise men giving gold, frankincense, and myrrh to a newborn Jesus. The legend of Santa Claus, however, can be traced to a monk named St. Nicholas who was born around 280 A.D. He was known and admired for his piety and kindness. He actually spend

Obviously as one could imagine, there were many popular gifts for people of all ages in 2016. For kids, their top gifts could be boardgames, a new stuffed animal, or Star Wars merchandise. For teens, it could be the new iPhone 7, an Xbox One S, or a new pair of headphones. And for adults, it could be a new laptop, a purse, or Amazon products. All of these things are great gifts, and they show that as people age, the price tags for gifts usually increases.

Most people here at Wisco know the real meaning of Christmas is that our Savior was born. Even so, it is safe to say that those same people still feel the thrill of imagining what they might receive as a gift. That also is part of the magic of Christmas.

New Year’s Resolutions Tips for making and keeping lasting New Year’s Resolutions.

Christmas is sadly over, and the decorations are down. Family relatives have left (until next Christmas), and everything is back to normal; well, almost. During the new year, many people set goals for themselves (resolutions). They recall what they did last year, and evaluate what they could have done better.

These resolutions are a promise for the new year. It is a way for people to start fresh and think positive for the incoming year.

The tradition of making New Year’s resolutions dates back to 153 B.C. The month January is named after the mythical Roman god Janus, who had two faces--one looking forward and one looking backward. On December 31, the Romans imagined Janus looking backward on the old year and forward into the new year.

This became a symbolic time for Romans to make resolutions for the new year and forgive enemies for past issues.

Although many people like the thought of having a list of New Year’s resolutions, very few actually follow through with making one.

According to strategist and author, Richard Zalack, only about 3% of people make New Year goals, while the other 97% do not. In addition, out of those who do choose to make resolutions, only about 8% fulfill them.

One reason for not following through on a goal might be how busy people’s lives are. They make make resolutions but work, school, and other activities take priority and those resolutions begin to fade. One way to try and keep these resolutions is to write them down with pen and paper. Being able to see the goals will keep them fresh in your mind. Another tip to keeping these goals is to make the resolutions achievable. Be realistic and start simple.

According to the article, “New Year’s Resolution Statistics,”

the number one goal, made by 21.4% of people is to lose weight or eat healthy. This is by far the most popular resolution. The second most popular goal made by 12.3% of people is to make self improvements. The third highest goal made by 8.5% is to make better financial decisions. Writer Jane Collington suggests setting a time frame to help keep the New Year resolutions. She says that this is necessary in order to stay motivated.

Keeping a diary or calendar can also help with tracking short and longterm progress.

Additionally, sharing New Year resolutions with others helps motivation to stay in check; friends and family serve as a daily reminder of the plans and goals set. Receiving support is a great way to stay positive. Finally, do not give up! It may seem hard at first; however, in the end it is rewarding, especially when reflecting on the next year and seeing all that was accomplished.

Some interesting and unique holiday traditions in other countries

Christmas Traditions Norway In Norway, on Christmas Eve, the Norwegians hide their brooms in fear of evil spirits and witches stealing them.

Japan In Japan many people eat Kentucky Fried Chicken on Christmas Eve. This started in December 1974 when a clever marketing campaign for KFC promoted it as “Kentucky For Christmas.” The BBC estimated that 3.6 million Japanese families eat KFC during the Christmas season.

Germany Another tradition, which may be a little more well known, is hiding ‘the pickle’ in the Christmas tree, and whoever found the pickle ornament first got a special present and could open his/her Christmas presents first.

Although this tradition originated in Germany, many Americans hide pickle ornaments today.

Venezuela Residents of the Venezuelan city of Caracas travel to Christmas Mass on roller skates. Many streets are closed to traffic, and whole families wheel their way into the church pews.

Red is meant to symbolize the blood of Jesus Christ and rebirth.

Bermuda Many people fly kites on Good Friday. The kites are meant to represent the ascension of Christ into heaven.

Valentine’s Traditions Denmark Rather than roses, friends and sweethearts exchange pressed white flowers called snowdrops. Men can also give women gaekkebrev, a “joking letter” consisting of a funny poem or rhyme written on intricately cut paper and signed only with anonymous dots. If a woman who receives the gaekkebrev can correctly guess the sender, she earns herself an Easter egg later that year.

Philippines Mass wedding ceremonies have become popular in the Philippines in recent years, leading hundreds of couples to gather at malls or other public areas around the country to get married or renew their vows in large groups.

Animals in Captivity Are zoos or the wild a better home for animals?

Many people view zoos as a place to have fun and see animals that they has never seen before. However, zoos are viewed by some in a negative manner. Research has been done on the positive and negative effects of animals being placed in captivity.

Looking at the behavior of animals in captivity compared to their actions in the wild, researchers can determine what is best for a particular animal or species. The article “Empty the Cages and Tanks,” states that elephants in the wild are known to be quite social and will live with as many as 100 other elephants. Also, wild elephants walk approximately 40 miles a day and can live up to 70 years. In zoos, however, elephants are kept in groups of 3 or 4 and only live around 40 years due to the unnatural living conditions. Elephants are not able to walk 40 miles in their enclosure; therefore, they do not get enough exercise. Michelle Carr’s article, “The Reality of Zoos,” states that captive animals are known to suffer from ‘zoochosis,’ a condition of extreme depression. Nadine Gordimer, a South African writer, once said, “A zoo is a prison.” Animals become

bored and lonely from the unnatural environment they inhabit; therefore, it is shown that for some animals, the zoo lifestyle is not the best. One example may be Jabari, a 300-pound gorilla from the Dallas Zoo who tried to escape from his enclosure by jumping over a moat. As a result, he was tragically shot to death by police in 2004.

“It tried to charge two of our officers, so we had to shoot it,” Deputy Police Chief Daniel Garcia said. “You can imagine the pandemonium we had out here when he got loose. We felt terrible that we had to put this animal down.”

Although zoos may not be the best place for some animals, they can also be good and beneficial living environments for other animals. The article “How Zoos can Save our Animals” says that zoos can give animals a safer and more adequate habitat for them to live in. Ruth Padel said that “responsible zoos have become places of education and science whose prime concern is conserving the wild.” Recently, animal habitats have been destroyed and global warming is taking its toll. Zoos can give animals,who no longer have a proper habitat, a home.

Zoos can help increase the population of certain animal species, such as the giant panda and many others. Animal extinction is on the rise for mammals,

amphibians, birds, reptiles, invertebrates, and freshwater fish. Ruth Padel states, “Zoos are a concentrated image of the way nature has to survive in our world now, because of us.” For instance, tigers have lost their forest homes to coffee plantations in Sumatra, bauxite mines in central India, (where aluminum for cell phones is made), and to paddy-fields for basmati rice. Good zoos, in general, are helpful in saving animals. For instance, in Australia, zoos such as Taronga, Perth, Adelaide and Zoos Victoria (which encompasses the Werribee Open range Zoo, the Melbourne Zoo, and the Healesville Sanctuary), are all non-profit organizations. Zoos Victoria states that their goal is “to generate income, so that we can better serve the animals in our care and the increasing number of threatened species that require our help including the Baw Baw Frog, Brush-tailed Rock Wallaby and Orange-bellied Parrot.” Therefore, zoos can be seen as a sanctuary for many species, especially for those that are endangered.

There are many pros and cons to keeping animals in captivity. While God has given mankind dominion over all the animals, it is important that people not abuse this power and recognize animals as part of God’s creation.

Furry Fashion Just like us, our lovable furry friends also can make bold and unique fashion statements.

Trends come and go often, especially clothing trends. People can look back over the past years and see a variety of different changes as proof. While styles may come back, others stay where they are--dead. One clothing trend that has been popular for centuries is surprisingly not worn by humans at all. It’s clothing for animals! Over time people began to clothe pets and other animals either out of necessity or for fun. However, lately it has become more popular than ever to dress dogs in costumes.

Just as parents dress up their children for holidays such as Halloween in adorable costumes, owners are doing the same with their dogs!

Many costume stores such as Party City, Costume Express, and Spirit Halloween carry costumes both on-

line and in store. Even stores such as Target, Walmart, Amazon, and of course the pet stores carry them.

Costumes range from adorable characters, other animals, and food items. Sometimes it is hard to have creative ideas, but luckily websites and apps like Pinterest, Popsugar, and Buzzfeed have great ideas for pets of all sizes.

Not only are dogs dressed u p for holidays, but also for special events. While people may wear a nice dress or a fancy suit, animals may wear the same. Online stores such as The Funny Fur and Posh Puppy Boutique sell formal clothing for dogs. They have embroidered shirts, bow ties, dresses, tux sweaters, and many more, but the pet-dressing movement does not stop just there. Owners can dress up their companion in sports appar-

el, lounge wear, sweaters, hats, and jewelry. Brands like Ralph Lauren, Armani, Calvin Klein, Tom Ford, or Prada may sound familiar to pet owners who like to dress up their animals. Furthermore, Hartman & Rose, Dogo Design, Kenzo Lacroix, or Oscar Newman also have one thing in common in regards to animals. All of these people and companies are designers for furry friends.

This is another way for people to show off their style. They can choose to match the dog’s outfit with how they like to dress. Either way, it is fun.

Pizza! Pizza!

Find out where pizza really came from and how it has become such a popular choice of foods.

What comes to a person’s mind when the phrase flat bread is brought up? Most likely the thought that it’s just a type of bread. It sounds plain and does not sound like something very appetizing. However, flat bread is actually the beginning of a favorite food--pizza. It all started in the 18th century with Queen Margherita of Savoy. According to popular tradition, in 1889, while walking through the streets and marketplaces, she saw many poor people eating this “flat bread.” It was large round bread which was baked with oil, herbs, and spices. (At the time, tomatoes were not used.) So, she ordered a servant to get one, so that she could try it. With one bite, she instantly fell in love. The Queen ordered Chef Raffael Esposito to move from his pizzeria and come to the royal palace. To show his gratitude, he made a special pizza. That is when the use of tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and fresh Basil came into play. The colors of the ingredients resembled the colors of the Italian flag.

They named it after the Queen--Pizza Margherita.

As Italians migrated to the United States, so did the concept of pizza. (Originally this was an inexpensive food made by Italian immigrant women in their kitchens.) The first modern pizzeria in the USA was Antica Pizzeria Port’alba in 1830.

Slowly more pizzerias were built.

The 1930s saw pizza spread to Boston, San Francisco, and Chicago.

Pizza began to be part of American life after World War 2 ended, and soldiers returned to their homes. They missed the taste of the pizza they had eaten overseas when

stationed in Italy. In 1945 one of these returning GIs, Ira Nevin, combined his love of pizza with his knowledge of repairing ovens. He built the first gas-fired pizza oven which allowed the pizzas to be baked quickly and efficiently. This creation helped the spread of pizzerias across America.

Between 1945 and 1960, pizzerias began to be popular. Word spread about the delicious new food-pizza. Going out for pizza was an affordable way for families to be able to go out for dinner. Thin crust pizza was made by hand with fresh mozzarella and the sauce was made from fresh tomatoes. Pizza has a combination of warm dough with cheese and sauce that made (and still makes) it addicting. People loved it.

Pizza chain restaurants changed the pizza business. In 1958 Pizza Hut started in Wichita, Kansas, and Little Caesar’s in 1959. Domino’s pizza opened in 1960 in Michigan and Papa John’s in 1989 in Indiana. The pizza was still made by hand, but the sauce, cheese, and dough was made

somewhere else and shipped to the restaurants. It was difficult for pizzerias to compete with the lower prices that the chain restaurants offered. The war between the chain restaurants and the handmade Italian pizzerias continues. Studies show that 94% of Americans eat pizza regularly. The average number of slices of pizza a person eats each year is 46 slices, and if they have an addiction even more!

Pizza is an extraordinary food.

The percent of Americans who eat at least one slice of pizza per month is 93%. Pizza accounts for more than 10% of food services.

It is an amazing food that all can enjoy. All a person has to do is pop in it the oven, or go to a restaurant or pizza parlor to customize your own. There are a total number of 70,000 pizzerias world wide. The total number of pizza sold worldwide each year is 5 billion!

Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes--small, large, circle, square, thin crust, stuffed crust, extra toppings.

Battery that never dies

A battery that will last forever . . . or so it seems. Discover how one girl broke through the barrier and was able to come up with a solution to pioneer the first steps toward creating the first longlasting battery.

One of the most annoying things in life definitely has to be a dying battery. Whether it is during a half-completed text, or an exciting computer game, it is quite frustrating when everything freezes and goes black. However, what if there was a battery that lasted forever, or at least a lifetime? Although this sounds too good to be true, such an invention exists, and it was discovered accidentally!

On a typical school day in the spring of 2016 at the University of California (UCI), doctoral candidate Mya Le Thai, who was working in coordination with the Nanostructures for Electrical Energy Storage (in association with the U.S. Department of Energy Services) was experimenting with different chemicals in the lab. She coated a gold nanowire, which are smaller than a strand of hair, in a chemical called manganese dioxide. After coating the wires, she encased the assembly in an electrolyte gel that is similar to plexiglass. The test results showed that the nanobattery was able to endure an astounding 200,000 charge cycles!

Could this discovery be the solution to dying batteries? More-

over, Thai said, “This research proves that a nanowire-based battery electrode can have a long lifetime, and that we can make these kinds of batteries a reality.” Thai, “cycled the testing electrode up to 200,000 times over three months without detecting any loss of capacity or power and without fracturing any nano-wires.”

According to the head of the Chemistry department, Mr. Penner, “She discovered that just by using this gel, she could cycle it hundreds of thousands of times without losing any capacity.” In this case, “Hard work combined with serendipity paid off in this case.”

The newly discovered battery does not degrade after thousands of charges like a normal battery. (A typical lithium battery can endure 5,0006,000 uses.)

Although this battery sounds incredibly convenient and practical, it does not last forever. It can be continuously recharged, yet if it is not recharged for a lengthy amount of time, it may still die. It is a pioneer for the invention of the true “battery that never dies.” There is still research left to be done, and there is not a definite price tag on it; however, once it is released to the public, it will most likely be used in smartphones, cars, appliances, and other electronic products.

Having an everlasting battery would be extremely beneficial for the community. Students would not have to worry about their laptop dying in the middle of a school day, and parents would not have to fret about their phone dying in the middle of an important call. A battery like this could further enhance the technology that we have today.
