Milwaukee Fall Fun

The year 2020 has thrown us several curveballs, and life just isn’t the same. There are many places we can no longer go, and many activities that we have not been able to do together as a community.

However, there are some events and places that are still open and allow you to be part of a safe environment. Here are some great opportunities to have fun in this recently-changed world:

Oak Leaf Trail A great place to walk, jog, or bike while enjoying the outdoors is the Oak Leaf Trail. This trail is actually 125 miles long with various sites to see. Since this is open to the public, there is no need to schedule a time or pay for a ticket. While there are no actual Covid-19 safety rules, in order to feel safe as you travel through all 125 miles, you may want to wear a mask and practice social distancing if you are in close proximity to others.

Sculpture Walk on Wisconsin Avenue in Milwaukee A simple way to observe a vast array of art is by traveling down Wisconsin Avenue where you’ll find 19 different sculptures over a course of 1.5 miles. These displays are always open, and seeing them requires no fees. There are stickers to stand on that are placed six feet apart to ensure social distancing while viewing the sculptures. Also, masks are required. If you prefer to stay at home, an audio tour is available. Go to https://www.sculpturemilwaukee.com/ for details.

Milwaukee Film Festival

Gothic Milwaukee Tour Love ghost stories and history? This unique and spooky tour is made for you. The Gothic Milwaukee Tour takes you around downtown Milwaukee and explains the stories behind some historical buildings. You’ll also get a chance to learn about the folklore and legends that surround these places, which is perfect for getting into the Halloween spirit. This is a year-round tour that departs at Cathedral Square Park, at the corner of Jackson and Wells Streets. There is an 8 person limit per tour, with mask and social distancing rules in place. Tickets are $20, and you must buy them online. Rain or shine, this tour is on for everyone who enjoys the historic side of Milwaukee!

Activities

You don’t even have to leave your couch to enjoy this year’s Milwaukee Film Festival which is being presented virtually. From October 15th to the 29th, Milwaukee is celebrating cinema by streaming independent movies and short programs. Last year’s festival had more than 170 productions and record-breaking in-person attendance.

This year’s ticket prices for each movie are reduced to $8 instead of $13. For access to all movies, you will need to buy the pass which is $140 through October 14th and $160 starting on October 15th. Visit their website to purchase a ticket or pass. All screenings will be online through CineSend which also works through devices like Roku and Amazon Fire.

The Milwaukee Public Market The Milwaukee Public Market is a wonderful place to get a diverse range of fresh foods sold by many different market vendors. Located at 400 N Water St, Milwaukee, WI 53202, the Milwaukee Public Market is devoted to keeping their customers safe by asking everyone to wear masks, limiting the amount of people inside, having hand-sanitizer, and encouraging customers to eat outside if possible. The market offers curbside pick-up as well as delivery. The indoor hours are 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. Be sure not to miss out on the amazing food!

We hope that these activities will inspire you to stay strong during this time and help you enjoy fall to the fullest. These events allow us to experience something positive in the midst of all the changes, so remember to stay safe and follow any guidelines put in place.

Cooking

TRY A NEW

Cooking became a popular activity during Covid. In fact, people searching for the word “recipe” reached an all-time high in the U.S. and worldwide, Google Trends found. This may be because “baking can bring comfort in times of uncertainty,” culinary art therapist Julie Ohana told CNBC. People baked banana bread, cloud bread, lasagna and other delicious treats.

In fact, according to Google Trends, “the top searched for recipes include baked goods, like banana bread and brownies.” The student body and staff at WLHS tried many of these recipes and more. Some recipes tried were spicy ramen, baked oatmeal, soft pretzels, dutch oven bread, and cream puffs. The recipe most people tried was whipped coffee (see recipe below).

90.7% of people who responded would recommend their recipe to others. The platform most people used to find these recipes was TikTok.

TikTok’s Whipped Coffee

Ingredients 2 tablespoons instant coffee (not regular coffee grounds!)

2 tablespoons white sugar 2 tablespoons hot water 1 and 1/2 cups milk Instructions --Add the instant coffee, sugar, and hot water to a small bowl. (hot water from the faucet) --Use a hand mixer with a whisk attachment or a hand mixer with just one beater attached to whip the coffee mixture until it is thick and creamy.

--Fill a glass with a good amount of ice, and milk. (Use more or less milk depending on how strong you want the drink) --Add the whipped coffee mixture to the glass with the milk and stir to enjoy!

George Washington, Rosa Parks, Walt Disney, and Susan B. Anthony are five Americans who helped to change this country, and so do you. George Washington was the first President, Susan B. Anthony created major change in the country for slaves and women alike, and you have the opportunity to elect the next leader of the United States of America.

The Presidential Election is swiftly approaching, and it is of the utmost importance that all who are eligible get out and vote. Voting is a privilege in this country that is denied to many; take advantage and express this right on November 3, 2020.In the words of Mr. Jason Goede, “For some, [voting] is a duty to participate in a process that previous generations have fought for. I want to participate in order to have a voice.” Han Le seems to agree with the Wisco economics teacher when she says, “[Voting] is the time when your voice is extremely valuable.”

Although you have to be 18 to vote, teens can still can have a big impact on the result of the elections. Sit down with someone who is eligible to vote and have a conversation about every candidate’s pros and cons.

If your friends or family are not registered to vote, try and encourage them to do so.

It is easy to vote. All you have to do is go to myvote.wi.go and fill out the forms. It only takes a few minutes to make a big impact on this country. Once you have finished registering, you can choose whether you want to mail

in your ballot or deliver it in person.

Additionally, those under 18 can also preregister to vote, so that when they turn 18 they will be automatically registered. According to the USA.gov website, “Typically, a pre-registrant will fill out an application and be added to the voter registration list with a “pending” or “preregistration” status. When the individual turns 18, the individual is added to the voter registration list and able to cast a ballot.” This is a great way for minors to feel included in this election.

It is important to remember that whoever is chosen to lead The United States in the next four years was put in place by God. God knows what he is doing and will ultimately work through our next president for His and our good. Mr. Goede perfectly encapsulates this thought, “Officials aren’t in charge, God is.” Trust in Him that whatever happens, it will work out just the way it is supposed to. Keep this in mind and accept the outcome as a gracious child of Christ.

Lastly, Principal Leyrer sums it up perfectly when he says, “A person who does not choose to vote will have his reasons, and they are reasons that make sense to him or her. However, voting is a way that we express thanks for the blessing of living in a country that gives us the right to choose our elected officials. One should not take that privilege lightly or throw it aside because it is too inconvenient or because you don’t believe your vote will make any difference.”

Welcome New Teachers!

Pastor Koschnitzke

Pastor Koschnitzke was a pastor at St. John Lutheran Church (Newville) in the town of Lake Mills, Wisconsin for 5 and a half years before coming to Wisco. He also taught Freshman Old Testament, and Junior Church History at Lakeside Lutheran High School in Lake Mills, WI. Pastor Koschnitzke says that he was drawn to the opportunity of having a spiritual impact on the next generation.

He is currently enjoying getting to know all of his students, and he comments on how helpful and caring the staff is. Something he enjoys doing is going to Brewer games, playing softball, or just having a nice quiet night with his wife and kids.

Mr. McBryde Mr. McBryde is a new teacher at Wisco this school year. He teaches U.S. history, and he is also a dorm supervisor at the Honey Creek Hall dorm.

Mr. McBryde is from the small town of Zumbrota, Minnesota. He came to Wisco because there are a lot of opportunities and activities going on here. Mr.McBryde describes himself as fun-loving, energetic, and a person who loves to read about history. As a teacher, he wants to make history more than just a subject. He wants his students to learn while having fun; not just sitting at their desks writing what is on the board. He makes history interesting by having students stand up, go around the class, and talk about their opinions with others in the classroom. Other than teaching history, he also enjoys reading books about history, hiking, jogging, and being active. He is also a huge Taylor Swift fan and hopes one day to travel to Scotland.

Mr. Liepert

Mr. Liepert is a new teacher at Wisco this year. His office is room 116 where he teaches both American Literature and Speech. He is helping in the theater department with the fall play and directing the musical. Before coming to Wisco, Mr. Liepert was a teacher at Winnebago Lutheran Academy in Fond du Lac. He decided to move to Wisco as a way to experience new culture, and he is interested in seeing the differences between the two cities. Mr. Liepert has a love for cooking and baking, and his favorite food is pizza.

Mr. Liepert has always wanted to go to Germany to visit his relatives and to explore this country.

Mr. Leyrer is Wisco’s newest IT expert. He used to work for Newline Technology, but decided it was time for a job switch. He enjoys working with both students and teachers in the Christian atmosphere that Wisco provides. He has four little girls, and he enjoys taking walks with them to the park. He is a member at Nain Evangelical Lutheran church and helps record the services there on Saturday nights. Mr. Leyrer’s advice for the students at Wisco is to “Restart your chromebooks every night!”

Ms. Radue

Before coming to Wisco Ms. Radue taught Geometry and Consumer Math at Great Plains Lutheran High School in Watertown, South Dakota. She says that she always wanted to come back to teach at the place she went to high school, and she joins the many other WLHS alumni who also have come back to Wisco to teach.

Her current church is St. John’ Wauwatosa. One thing she looks forward to at Wisco are Homecoming, Festival, and Christmas spirit weeks.

Dr. Berg

Dr. Berg teaches Senior Apologetics. He works at WLC, and has for the past few years. When Pastor Doebler (previous Senior Apologetics teacher) took a call to California, Dr. Berg took his place.

His favorite thing about Wisco is the kids and how bright they are.

“Their ability to work through all this online stuff has been amazing,” he said. He enjoys yard work, preaching at St. John’s Mukwonago, and he co-runs a podcast (Let the Bird Fly) with fellow college professor, Wade Johnston. His piece of advice for the students at Wisco is “to know that whatever job you find yourselves in, that it is God’s work, and you are free to get lost in the craft of your job because Christ has forgiven you and will always love you no matter how you perform in life.”

Before joining the Guidance Department at Wisco, Mrs. Chavez was a counselor for eight years at Bruce Guadalupe Community School. Mrs. Chavez decided to move to Wisco because it was closer to home, and she felt compelled to be at a WELS school again.

She praises the staff for being so welcoming and kind to her, and she thanks them for answering all her questions. Her current church is Peace in Hartford. She enjoys traveling with her family to visit her husband’s family in Mexico!
