Bob Dohnal hatched Wheeling Weekend at the State Fair Park race track back in the early 1980s. The events featured open riding on the one-mile oval as well as serious racing for kids and adults in a criterium series. Wheeling Weekend became hugely popular. This year, VeloCause is bringing cycling back to the Milwaukee Mile. See page 26 for the story and list of events.

This 2018 Ride Guide edition of our magazine is packed with stories about great Wisconsin bike rides you will want to put on your calendar. All our fun Bike Fed rides are back again too. The year kicks off with our Lowlands Spring Classic Series, a handful of free early sseason training rides across the state we organize for those who want to shake the winter out of their legs. Next up on June 22nd is our family-friendly Polish Moon Ride in Milwaukee. The Polish Moon is a rolling Polka party on two wheels that is fun for riders of all ages and abilities. Then on August 11th is the big enchilada, our 175 mile Ride Across Wisconsin. New this year we are offering a 105 mile option. No, we have not found a secret shortcut from the Mississippi to Lake Michigan, but we have figured out a way for you to experience the best of RAW without pedaling all the miles. As of this printing, there were still about 10 spots open on our Tour de Chequamegon bikepacking weekend. Hurry to sign up if you want to join us and the crew from Fyxation Bicycle Company for this three-day guided trip through the beautiful Wisconsin Northwoods. The trip is limited to 30 people and sells out early every year. Last on the calendar of Bike Fed rides is our Santa Cycle Rampage, always on the first Saturday in December. Despite the winter weather, this Milwaukee ride attracted more than 2,000 holiday revelers last year. Of course the Ride Guide still has a calendar and advertisements for hundreds of other great rides around Wisconsin. This issue also includes a story about the Trek 100, one of our favorites for the incredible food at all the rest stops. While we hope this issue gets you raring to ride, we also include an update on Wisconsin legislation that affects all cyclists and introduce you to our new vision for more effective statewide bicycle advocacy. You can learn even more about that vision and hear local success stories from communities across Wisconsin at this year’s State Bike Summit, Saturday, May 5th in Madison.

WISCONSIN STATE ADVOCACY by Dave Schlabowske

2.0

10

Once upon a time, not so long ago, the League of American Bicyclists ranked Wisconsin second in their Bicycle Friendly States program, just behind Washington. Then in 2015 we fell from the second best state in the nation for cycling to ninth, and in 2017 we plummeted all the way to 26th. As Wisconsin’s only statewide bicycle advocacy group that represents the interests of everyone who rides a bike, we don’t like being pack filler. It is time to work together to get back to the front. What caused the drop in state ranking when communities from Ashland to Kenosha have been embracing cycling like never before? There are a number of reasons. Top of the list is probably that Wisconsin became the first, and so far only, state to repeal a Complete Streets law. Wisconsin eliminated all dedicated state funding for bicycling. Our state budget only allocates the bare minimum allowed by federal law for bicycle and pedestrian projects, and diverts half the federal funds for bicycling to highway projects. There is no longer any sizable funding for non-motorized safety programs other than a small amount for law enforcement agencies. Local officials are no longer allowed to use eminent domain to acquire right-of-way for bicycle or pedestrian facilities. Thank you to everyone who responded to our action alerts about all these issues, but bicycling came out the loser in each case. We have had some state legislative successes, like being part of a coalition that pushed for a significant increase in state funds to repair local roads, making for fewer potholes, passing an increase in penalties for the kind of vehicle mov-

ing violations that often result in injury or death for cyclists, and most recently, heading off a state rule change that would increase conflicts between motorized and silent sports users of our state parks and forests. While many of our electeds in Madison have pulled back on Wisconsin’s investments in cycling, our neighboring states of Minnesota and Michigan have added hundreds of miles more trails. Michigan’s Governor Snyder and our neighbors to the east have continued to invest in transformative projects like the Great Lake to Lake Trail and the Iron Belle Trail. To our west, Minnesota’s legislature has bipartisan support for a $15 million increase in state spending on non-motorized transportation projects and $6 million more for Safe Routes to School compared 8 million in Wisconsin. Federal law allows states to divert up to 50% of Transportation Alternatives Program funds to highways instead of the bicycle and pedestrian projects the set-aside program was created to fund. Minnesota and Michigan use all their TAP funds for biking and walking projects. Wisconsin diverts the maximum to roads. It was only about 10 years ago that Wisconsin led the nation in miles of trails, now Michigan and Minnesota have hundreds more miles than we do, with even more planned. While our state legislators have let our state fall behind our neighbors, a growing number of communities large and small across Wisconsin have embraced bicycling and walking. Local cycling groups have been very successful, advocating that their communities add trails, on-street bikeways and safety programs. From north to south, here is a short list of transformative projects done by local communities:

Bike lanes and wider sidewalks on S. 2nd St. in Milwaukee lured millions in private investment.

Mt Ashwabay mountain bike trails by Bayfield, Washburn and Ashland were built with private and local funds. • WinMan mountain bike trails between Winchester and Manitowish Waters were built with private and local funds. • The new Sylvan Hills mountain bike park in Wausau was built with local public funds. • Much of the Heart of Vilas County Trails system around Boulder Junction was done with local and private funds. • La Crosse bicycle commuter share increased 50% since they adopted and began implementing their new bicycle master plan. • Green Bay recently began plowing trails and started a community bike shop earn-a-bike program. • Milwaukee County added dozens of miles of bike trail filling in gaps in the Oak Leaf Trail network. • Wauwatosa added green bike lanes and improved pedestrian ways on North Avenue in East Tosa and saw a huge investment in new businesses, creating a new destination retail strip. • Local advocates in Racine raised private funds for a new bicycle and pedestrian master plan after state funds were eliminated. • Kenosha is hosting the opening race of the Tour of America’s Dairyland, the finish party of the Ride Across Wisconsin, and has resurfaced the nation’s oldest velodrome in Washington Park. This is by no means a complete list, and I’m sure many readers can think of successes I failed to mention. In all of these cases, local advocates were able to persuade their neighbors, fellow citizens and locally-elected officials that paved trails, mountain bike parks, and on-street bikeways will have a great return on investment, making their home towns better places to live, work, do business and ride a bike. The question for the Bike Fed is how do we harness this local energy? How do we bring together all these small local groups so we all speak with one voice for Wisconsin? Before cyclists can be more effective at influencing state government, we need a shared vision for what a more bicycle friendly Wisconsin looks like, a clear vision 12

that we can all rally around and easily articulate. We don’t think we need to reinvent the wheel though. America’s Best Ride was the vision that came out of our 2013 Wisconsin Bike Summit. At the time it had broad support from our members and the bicycle industry. That vision was built around three basic planks: A signed, mapped Statewide Trail Network built around all the many existing state and local trails, with plans to fill in the gaps. Bicycle Friendly Communities with safe street networks that include modern bicycle design treatments like protected bike lanes and neighborhood greenways That vision might need some further refinement and some detailed examples, but it seems like something everyone should be able to support. We have three strategies to organize everyone who cares to move us toward America’s Best Ride: Organize local clubs and groups across the state so we have designated cycling representatives in each of our 72 counties. We need to unify all the disparate, but effective local cycling clubs, teams and advocacy groups across the state. If the Bike Fed can organize these successful local groups into an effective federation that speaks with one voice about statewide issues, we will have greater influence at the state level. The Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs is a good example of an effective statewide organization that is really made up of local clubs. The local clubs in the AWSC select a director and representative for each of the 72 counties. Whenever an important statewide issue arises, the AWSC has an organization in place that allows them to activate their members across the state. Legislators hear from people in every county who represent their local clubs and 42,000 families that are members of the AWSC. Organize a caucus of elected and municipal leaders who already support cycling in their communities. Minnesota has just such an organized group of mayors who are already embracing bicycling. The Minnesota Mayoral Active Transportation Caucus was created to highlight the importance of pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure to the communities of Minnesota. When important state legislative issues arise, the Minnesota Bicycle Alliance

can call on this group to contact their state representatives. Because Wisconsin has supportive county executives, mayors, village administrators, town chairs, and council members, we would not limit our caucus to mayors. Highlight local business support for biking and the economic impact of bicycling in Wisconsin. There are so many businesses that invest in bicycling as a way to attract customers as well as provide employee benefits that retain a talented workforce. Many of these business leaders want to see more public investment in cycling as well. From huge office parks like Schlitz Park in Milwaukee to small businesses like Red Eye Brewing in Wausau, we have hundreds of business friends of bicycling. To quantify that business support, the Bike Fed would like to update the nearly decade-old economic impact study for bicycling in Wisconsin. We worked with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the University of Wisconsin on previous studies, but much has changed in the last decade and there is every reason to believe that cycling makes an even greater impact than the $1.5 billion and 14,000 jobs documented then. In addition to statewide numbers, we need case studies highlighting the impact cycling has had in local communities across Wisconsin. Statewide impacts are great, but local officials want to know what it means in their own backyards. With statewide statistics and local examples everyone can relate to, the economic impact study will be another powerful argument to make Wisconsin America’s Best Ride. How we move forward with this new vision and organizing effort is up to you and will be the theme of the 2018 State Bike Summit being held on May 5th in Madison. The Summit will be attended by members and representatives from bike clubs, teams, local advocacy

organizations, business leaders and elected officials who can lead discussions about their successes and challenges. Every Bike Fed member is encouraged to join us there as it doubles as our official Annual Meeting. The Summit will also be a chance for staff at the Bike Fed to hear how we as an organization can help local groups and communities more. We want everyone to leave the Wisconsin Bike Summit energized with a new common vision and a plan regarding how we all fit into a more effective statewide network of advocates for cycling. We hope everyone leaves the summit sharing a common vision for making Wisconsin America’s Best Ride. We also hope everyone returns to their communities with a plan to help us reach the following goals by 2019: Two County Bicycling Representatives from local advocacy groups, bike clubs or teams for each of Wisconsin’s 72 counties organized in a

A Wisconsin Bicycle Business Council made up mostly of business leaders from outside the bike industry, but including bicycle industry and shop owners. An updated study of the economic impact of cycling in Wisconsin, with case studies of local successes. Wisconsin may have fallen off the front compared to other states, but we are still in the race. We can rejoin the leaders if we regroup and work together. We are excited to hear your thoughts about this approach to organizing and harnessing the energy of the thousands of bicycle loving local advocates, elected officials and business leaders across our great state.

175 MILES • 5,889 FT OF CLIMBING • ONE DAY August 11th, 2018 175-mile and 105-mile options

SHUT UP LEGS!

Join 17-time Tour de France finisher Jens Voigt and the Trek-Segafredo Racing Team for the fourth annual Ride Across Wisconsin. RAW is a one day 175-mile bucket list ride from the Mississippi River to Lake Michigan. You won’t want to miss the incredible route, unbeatable scenery, and rare chance to ride handlebar-to-handlebar with cycling legends, from Dubuque to Kenosha. The ride begins in Dubuque and follows scenic, low traffic roads across the bottom of the state. With well-stocked rest stops every 25 miles, expert ride support from Wheel & Sprocket and hundreds of riders of varying abilities to sit in with, RAW is surprisingly doable. This year lunch will be hosted at The Rock Bar and Grill right on the Rock River in Beloit. The ride ends with a finishers party at Kennedy Park along the shore of Lake Michigan in Kenosha. Ride under the finishers truss, grab your cool (bottomless) finishers mug and celebrate with fellow riders with beer from Public Craft Brewing and great Italian food from DeRango’s, both of Kenosha. You’ve earned it! Interested, but not sure you can ride 175 miles in one day? We offer a 105-mile option that ends in Beloit where you will have lunch and then hop a bus to the big finish party in Kenosha. While RAW is a long day in the saddle, very few people have taken advantage of the sag wagon. You can do it! In the following pages, we hope you find inspiration from Kate O’Keefe’s story of how she set RAW as a goal and finished last year, and some sage advice from Jens Voigt.

ADVICE

Interview and photographs by Dave Schlabowske Illustration by Peter DiAntoni

Question & answer with Jens Voigt The first time you were asked to do a 175-mile “fun” ride after you retired, what did you think? To be perfectly honest with you, the first time I learned about it was when I read a press release at breakfast announcing Jens Voigt was going to do a 175 mile ride across Wisconsin. Needless to say I was a bit surprised, but still happy to participate in the first. I struggled in my first year, but maybe because mentally I wasn’t prepared. The next two years I didn’t have any trouble. I just break the distance down into chunks between rest stops. And the rest stops are great, lots of good food and super nice people. Despite the distance, the ride is just perfectly reasonable and is absolutely doable. A 175 mile ride all in the Rockies would be another story. The RAW is long, but without too much climbing. I know you do some other charity rides. Other than RAW, what is the longest ride you do now? Your ride is the longest. I did the Everest Challenge though, where you ride a local climb or mountain as many times as it takes to equal the distance to ride up Mount Everest. I rode this little mountain very close to my home, so I had to do the mountain 100 times. It took 26 hours and 410 kilometers or about 280 miles for me to reach the height of Mt Everest. I did raise $30,000 for the Tour de Cure though! Do you have to train for RAW now that you are no longer racing? I do travel a lot, so I don’t have time for a proper training schedule. I use the hotel gym when I travel. I run a lot of marathons. Sometimes getting up early enough to run a marathon before I announce a race. But mostly I am counting on the muscle memory and all the thousands of miles I rode as a professional to carry me through.

20

I was always good at the longer races. I was never a crit racer or sprinter. I feel as retired, I would suffer at the high intensity rates. But I can go forever if I don’t over do it. How many miles a year did you ride as a pro? 35,000K and about 15,000K was racing, so at a very high intensity. I was so skinny and fit back then! Who of your cohorts of retired racers would you like to see come ride RAW with you? Well, it would be great to ride with Cancellara. I’d like to see him suffer a little? Bob Roll, would be great. You know he is super funny, but behind that he is extremely intelligent and thoughtful. Andy Schleck, would probably be hugely popular with the ladies! How did Ivan Basso fair after RAW last year? Ivan Basso was a bit knackered after the ride last year! After we left the finish party in Kenosha, he fell asleep in the car right away. Maybe it was the beer, but I think he didn’t have his mindset ready. I think maybe he skipped the first rest stop, perhaps went out harder than he should. But he finished with a smile. You know when he was a pro and training for a big race, like 250k, Ivan would do 300K motor pacing. But he was probably doing 28 mph the entire distance, so it goes faster. He would only be in the saddle six or seven hours. How many more Rides Across Wisconsin do you think you have in you Jens? You have certainly earned a rest! Well I am 46 now, so maybe I could do RAW another ten years? I don’t know, but I have to do something to stay active. Maybe some time I could come over a few days early and we could ride from Kenosha to Dubuque before we ride back?

INSPIRATION

Kate O’Keefe got herself a tattoo. That in itself might not impress you. After all, Kate lives in Milwaukee’s Bohemian neighborhood of Bay View. Tattoos on bodies are as common there as bratwursts at Brewer tailgate parties. Says Kate, “Everyone there has a tattoo… and an opinion.” What might get even Bay Viewers to notice Kate’s tattoo is that it was inspired by her 2017 Ride Across Wisconsin triumph. No, RAW isn’t a race, but for everyone who completes it, it is a personal victory over self-doubt. And, in Kate’s case, it represented a remarkably rapid transformation from a casual cyclist to a woman who crossed the state in only twelve hours and twenty minutes of saddle time. Kate, 47, is a nurse practitioner at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital, but she had never considered using needles for anything other than medical reasons before her RAW experience. “Even though I’m a nurse,” says Kate, “I am not a fan of pain.” But when it came time to get the deed done, Richie at Horseshoe Tattoo on Kinnickinnic Ave., did a professional job that on the pain scale was, “not as bad as I thought it was going to be,” according to Kate. The surprisingly not excruciating design is a simple outline of Wisconsin with a dashed line depicting the 175-mile route from Dubuque to Kenosha. At the end of the route you’ll find a true-to-life representation of Kate’s bike, a Specialized Tarmac she received as a Christmas gift from her long-time partner Bill Rouleau who bought it at the iconic Ben’s Cycle. 22

Until very recently she wasn’t all that much into cycling. She enjoyed neighborhood fun rides like the annual Tour de Farce, sponsored by the Rushmore Ltd. Music store, owned by her partner Bill, but that was about it. When she started to take cycling more seriously she set her sights on the 2016 Door County Century and completed it all by herself, her very first century ride. Her confidence now growing, she didn’t waste any time going for the big prize. Throughout the winter of 2016-2017 she worked indoors with Corey Hensen, a trainer at Wheel & Sprocket. She worked hard all winter and into the summer months. “Once I get it into my head to accomplish something, I do it,” Kate says. Corey and Kate’s mutual goal was to ride RAW 2017 together. And that’s exactly what they did… for the first 130 miles. Then Corey’s day ended but he encouraged Kate to press on alone and finish the ride. Kate fell in with a couple of RAW veterans, who provided friendly encouragement, and the three of them arrived in Kenosha together. Bill was there waiting at the finish arch to help her celebrate with their schnauzer, Wolfgang. A great accomplishment, no doubt, but why commemorate it with a tattoo? “My body worked pretty hard for this,” Kate answers. “I used these legs and it’s a good canvas.” Kate is definitely taking 2018 off, but she may return to RAW in a future year. For now, she’s looking for new adventures. In fact, she tells us that she’s waiting impatiently for this very Ride Guide to help her plan her next conquests. In addition to making the Door County Century an annual outing, she’s considering the Scenic Shore 150 and the Horribly Hilly Hundreds for this year. But here’s what we really want to know. Is RAW going to have to compete with new body art honoring each ride? “Nope,” says Kate, “this’ll be the only one.”

BIKES BRING MILWAUKEE MILE BACK TO LIFE by Dave Cieslewicz photographs by Dave Schlabowske

Bob Dohnal had a problem. And his answer was in bicycles.

In the early 1980’s Bob had five kids with more energy than outlets. “After school they were just driving me crazy,” Bob said over coffee at the West Allis Hampton Inn across the street from State Fair Park. To help his own sanity and his kids’ development Bob got them into competitive cycling. But Bob was also interested in helping promote his hometown of West Allis. A pharmacist, he ran a business there and even served as president of the local Chamber of Commerce. So, Dohnal combined a need to find a positive outlet for his energetic brood and his desire to make West Allis a cycling destination. He hatched Wheeling Weekend at the State Fair Park race track. The events featured open riding on the onemile oval as well as serious racing for kids and adults in a criterium series. Wheeling Weekend became hugely popular. Cycling is a natural option for cross training for speed skaters. With the Milwaukee Mile so close to the ice rink at 26

State Fair Park, Olympians such as Bonnie Blair, Eric Heiden, and Rebecca San Felippo (wife of Rep. Joe Sanfelippo) dreamed of gold medals while training on our banked oval. Over the years the event lost its steam, but now it’s back. Andy Feuersthaler, who is president of both the Wisconsin Cycling Association and Velocause, is partnering with the Bike Fed to host three days of crits and open riding at the race track this summer. Bob is serving as an informal advisor.

The dates are May 30th, June 6th and June 13th. Each evening will kick off at 4PM with paceline, eschelon and drafting practice. Then there will be junior races, women’s races, cat 4-5, and cat 1-2-3 races, ending with time trials. During the entire evening casual riders are invited to ride in the outer lanes, safely away from the racers. The Bike Fed is helping with some of the upfront costs and riders will be charged $15 to cover insurance and other costs. Bob and Andy have no idea how many folks will show up, but they’re hoping for around 175 per night.

28

One of the goals of the project is to improve riders’ knowledge of strategy. “A lot of riders train hard and are strong now,” said Andy. “But they really don’t have any knowledge of strategy: when to attack, when to hold back, how to ride in a paceline. We want to help them build a skill set that you just can’t learn riding on your own.” That’s especially true for young riders. Veteran Velocause riders will be riding along during the youth races offering advice to riders as they race. One of their goals is to reinvigorate the sport among women and young people while they also improve the skills of master class riders. Bob and Andy can see West Allis becoming a center for young riders who will eventually find their way into elite racing. After our coffee in the cozy Hampton Inn, Bob and I drove across the street to the race track, which lay covered in a layer of ice and snow. We stood in the pit lane as he pointed out where the events would take place in just a few months. It was a fitting setting. When spring comes an underused resource will power back into life and feel the energy of people on bikes. With auto-racing lagging, the future of the iconic old track is uncertain and it just could be bicycles that save it for future generations. It was cold out there on a January afternoon, but just imagining the possibilities I felt warmer already.

isconsin is home to hundreds of great bike rides and biking events and we’re happy to list as many of them as we can find each year in our Ride Guide. But we would be remiss if we didn’t admit that we’re also partial to our own homegrown Bike Fed events. Are we shameless for bragging on ourselves in our own magazine? Yeah, probably, but we’ll get over it. Here, in our humble opinion, are a few of the greatest cycling events in the history of two wheels and a frame.

Bike Fed Rides & Events Rock

The Spring Classics Series Ever wanted to ride to Belgium? How about Paris or Rome? Well, you can ride to those places without ever leaving Wisconsin in our Spring Classics Series. Yes, Wisconsin has a Paris and a Rome and Belgium, and while they might not be exactly like the ones in Europe, the cycling is just as good if not better. The annual series of longish, no-drop training rides starts in March and runs until May. As you can imagine, the Wisconsin weather ranges from surprisingly wonderful to, well, just surprising.

Wisconsin Bike Summit Planned for Madison on May 5th, the theme this year will be “Bike Fed 2.0.” As the Bike Fed moves into a new era of leadership this is a good time to take stock of where we are, what we’ve accomplished and how we can keep improving. Show up and share your ideas. Details will be available on the Bike Fed website and sent to you via email. Not on the list to get our email updates? Just send us an email at info@ wisconsinbikefed.org and you’ll be good to go.

Bike Week It’s a week for all things biking and all people who love bikes. The Bike Fed not only sponsors events, but also promotes the events of other groups around the state state each year during the first week of June. From commuter stations in Madison and Milwaukee to slow rides and special events for families, Bike Week is getting bigger every year. Check out this year’s details on our website.

Bike Fed Rides & Events Rock The Polish Moon Ride Look people, if you’ve never ridden the streets of Milwaukee’s near south side at dusk accompanied by an accordion player on the back of a cargo bike and about 700 of your closest friends, well, then you’ve been missing out. Named for the iconic Allen-Bradley (now Rockwell Automation) clock hovering like a giant moon over the once heavily Polish, and now mostly Latino, neighborhood, the Polish Moon Ride is a slow-going party on wheels. Polish and Mexican cuisine are featured during the street party before the ride and there’s plenty of polka dancing afterwards in this family-friendly event. Best of all, your modest registration fee covers not only the cost of providing Milwaukee Police to keep us all safe during the ride but there’s enough left over to support the Bike Fed’s southside Mobile Bike Repair Program. This year’s ride starts at Fuel Cafe on S. 5th Street on Friday, June 22nd.

The Ride Across Wisconsin It’s fitting that we call this “RAW” for short. And if we have to explain why this hard-as-hell one-day 175-mile trek across the best state for cycling in America is “raw,” maybe you need to spend more time in the saddle. We’ve moved up the date a couple of weeks for this fourth annual ride to give everybody a little more daylight to go from the Mississippi to the shores of Lake Michigan in Kenosha. So, mark your calendars for August 11th, sign up now because we cap this ride, and start training. Did we pique your interest? You can read a lot more about RAW elsewhere in this issue.

Tour de Chequamegon Have an adventure with us...Ride the scenic gravel roads of Wisconsin’s amazing Northwoods this fall with Fyxation and the Wisconsin Bike Fed. Roll through dense forest, uplands and remote lakes of the Chequamegon National Forest. This bikepacking adventure has put Wisconsin gravel on the map! The trip is limited to 40 people, and sells out very quickly. You bring your bike (or rent an amazing Quiver or Carbon Adventure Bike from Fyxation), your camping gear, clothes and we provide the rest. We guide you and provide mechanical support on the 112-mile, three-day trip. Food is catered in from an area chef. We even have beer brought in from the Whistle Punk Cafe. Santa Cycle Rampage This is the original Bike Fed ride, and remains our biggest, family friendly ride. Last year police estimated more than 2,500 people on our ride that stretched 25 blocks. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and now there are Santa Cycle Rampage spin-offs in other cities around Wisconsin and as far away as Boston. While we encourage those other rides, you really owe it to yourself to experience the ear-to-ear grins and holiday joy of the original. The Santa Cycle Rampage is Saturday, Dec. 1st this year. So, whether you want to stroll through the streets of Milwaukee as part of the state’s largest rolling party, get from one side of Wisconsin to the other in one grueling day or help us reinvent bicycle advocacy we’ve got just the event for you.

t’s no secret northwestern Wisconsin is home to some of the best mountain biking in the Midwest. Millions of acres of wooded public land administered by sympathetic land managers who understand the benefits of off-road cycling make it a natural fit. Local cycling clubs, most notably CAMBA (the Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association), have built hundreds of miles of singletrack meandering through forested uplands and along pristine lakes. A few trails afford long views of Lake Superior. For some reason, though, the area isn’t as well known for its gravel and road riding, but that isn’t for a lack of routes and terrain, most with minimal traffic. A wealth of pavement and gravel wait to be discovered and ridden, so both skinny and fat tires are at home in northwestern Wisconsin. Listed below is a sampling of ten local events for all widths of tires.

THE

Northwoods REPORT

Fat Bike Birkie, March 10: The largest fat bike race in the country. Last year, the fifth edition, drew over 1200 riders. The FBB offers two race options – the 47 km Big Fat and the 21 km Chico – both starting at the Birkebeiner Trailhead in Cable and using the wide Birkebeiner Ski Trail. It’s a fast, non-technical course. See birkie.com for more info.

Hungry Bear 100, May 12: Gravel racing in the Northwoods. The self-supported Hungry Bear and the shorter 60-mile Snacking Bear circle Lake Namekagon in Bayfield County. Both loops spend most of their miles in the deep woods of the Chequamegon National Forest, where you’re more likely to spot a famished bear than a bar or a convenience store. In other words, come prepared and bring your own snacks and drinks. See hungrybear100.org for more info.

Borah Epic, June 9: The inaugural point-to-point event took place in 2013 to raise funds for the CAMBA trails and also show off the newly completed singletrack from Cable to Hayward roughly paralleling the Birkie Trail. Since then, the race, started by clothing company Borah has raised over $72,000 for the trails. The field limit of 750 fills quickly for the 34 and 16 mile events. Go to borahepic.com for more info and registration.

Chequamegon 100, June 16: You might actually get sick of singletrack after this ride, which seeks to include as much of the CAMBA system as possible, the long race using trails from Rock Lake east of Cable down to the Hatchery, just north of Hayward. There are also shorter versions of 70 and 32 miles. Choose wisely – even 32 miles of singletrack can be a long day in the saddle. Check out the cool event t-shirts made by Twin Six and designed by former Chequamegon 100 champ Jesse Lalonde. Chequamegon100.org has more ride details.

Superior Vistas Bike Tour, June 23: Bike tours of seven different lengths from 13 to 100 miles. As advertised, the view from the ridges above the lake are superior. Starting lakeside in Washburn, all loops run on scenic, low traffic routes in Bayfield County with the 40-mile out-and-back loop and the century running past Siskiwit Falls and passing through the fishing village of Cornucopia. Firehouse 50, August 4: The 39th edition of this 50-mile citizens race, starting and finishing in Grand View, up and over the continental divide. Cyclists can choose to do it against the clock as a time trial (both team and individual categories) or as a mass start road race. There’s also a shorter and less competitive 33-mile Ride the Divide. All proceeds help fund the Grand View Fire Department. See firehouse50.org for more event details.

Gitche Gumee GranFondo, August 25: 100-mile road ride from Hayward to Bayfield on low traffic roads. Shorter options of of 80 and 60 miles also available, all with an optional stop at the iconic Delta Diner. Taking in the smooth asphalt of Forest Road 236 through the Moquah Barrens, all routes end with a stunning view of Lake Superior before dropping down a twisting descent to its shore. When finished, dip your tired body or maybe just your front tire into the cold water of a Great Lake. See GGGF’s Facebook page for more info.

Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival, September 16: The race that started all the fat tire development in the Northwoods. The 36th annual version of the country’s largest mass start mountain bike race will start over 2500 riders in two races. The Fat Tire 40, the main race, starts in downtown Hayward and runs on a combination of logging roads and the Birkie Trail to finish on the old grounds of the Telemark Resort. The Short and Fat, a 16-mile event, starts in Cable and finishes with the longer race at Telemark. The King of Fat, Gary Crandall, still directs this influential event. See cheqfattire.com for all things fat.

Tour de Chequamegon, October 4-7: A three-day guided bikepacking trek through the Chequamegon National Forest. You ride a loaded bike, carrying clothing and camping gear, while enjoying catered meals and remote campsites in the Northwoods. In early October, the maples, birch and aspen should be in fine autumn splendor, the days crisp and cool. Limited to just 40 riders, expect this event to fill fast. See ridefyxation.com for more event info, pictures and registration. Heading out on one of the many quiet fire roads experienced along the Tour of Chequamegon. photo: Peter DiAntoni

THE

Northwoods REPORT

LODGING There are numerous options for overnighting in the Northwoods. The Ashland, Bayfield, Cable or Hayward chambers of commerce are good starting points for traditional hotel and motel lodging. Airbnb is another option. The Bayfield County Forest lists their two yurts on Airbnb (called rustic yurts) – one at Mt. Ashwabay a few miles south of Bayfield on the CAMBA trails, and the other near the North End ski cabin on CAMBA’s Ojibwe Trail. Both yurts book quickly, even in the winter. Another intriguing option is the ROAM Adventure Basecamp in the Seeley Hills, adjacent to the Birkie and CAMBA trails. The CAMBA trails, groomed for fat bikes in winter, can be accessed literally within spitting distance of ROAM’s driveway off Janet Road, and several of the events listed above go right past ROAM. The base camp offers four rustic cabins and 30 campsites, seven of which are walk-ins. ROAM also matches CAMBA donations on their website dollar for dollar. See roambasecamp.com for info and reservations.

CAMBA News CAMBA will focus again on the Mt. Ashwabay trailhead in 2018. According to executive director Ron Bergin, CAMBA needs to complete about four and a half miles of trail to finish the project, bringing the total mileage up near Bayfield to 20. Farther south in Cable, CAMBA hopes to finish the connector, started last year and now named Dirt Candy, from the Ojibwe Trail to Esker. “There will be a short one-way flow/ play area adjacent where we will try to take advantage of some cool glacial terrain,” said Bergin. And finally, CAMBA will continue to work on the Hospital Gateway trail in Hayward, building another two and a half miles of similar, entry level trail. 44

With over 100 miles of singletrack spread throughout two counties, maintenance is ongoing for CAMBA. Bergin says the club will again hire five to six summer workers to repair and maintain the trail. Ziegler CAT has donated the use of a mini-excavator to help with these and other tasks. CAMBA also has a full slate of yearly events, from races to clinics to fundraisers. Don’t dismiss it. It’s real. From kissing bike fall boo-boos, helping with new math homework, organizing community outreach efforts, and celebrating entrepreneurial success, moms know how to get things done. Shelly Petrick and Larissa Gallagher of Union Grove, Wisconsin know this well. Two moms balancing work, family, and the urge to reconnect with nature, Petrick and Gallagher have dedicated themselves to establishing and raising awareness for the Union Grove Rails to Trails movement; an initiative to convert the Canadian Pacific Railway Corridor, an 11-mile abandoned rail corridor between Vandenboom Road east of Union Grove and Sturtevant, into a hiking and biking trail. The new trail would extend the White River Trail in Burlington to trails very close to Racine and to Lake Michigan. The result would extend the Burlington-Kansasville section of the White River State Trail to Sturtevant. This would be a vital addition within the overall Route of the Badger Trail Network and an important step forward in connecting the trails to Racine. The Route of the Badger is a partnership of Rails-to-Trails Conservancy and the Wisconsin Bike Fed whose stated goal is to build a powerful 500-mile inclusive regional trail network with new opportunities for physical activity, tourism, recreation and stronger businesses along its route. It all began over two years ago when Petrick and Gallagher attended a business and economic meeting in Union Grove where John Siegert from Rails-to-Trails Conservancy was speaking. His enthusiasm

MOMS BLAZING A TRAIL Route of the Badger

and vision for how trails can spur economic development and promote healthy living was the catalyst that sparked the moms into action. “I could envision how the trail could connect communities and revitalize our downtown. The potential for business growth would be tremendous for our community,” said Gallagher. “After that meeting, I went to visit a friend in Indiana and we walked a trail that went through downtown. All the shops, art and coffee places provided growth for the local economy with people wanting to live there. I began to think we can have that in Union Grove and I wanted to be a part of it,” said Petrick. Accomplishing this growth is no small feat, but the moms are making progress through good old fashioned grassroots campaigning and relationship building. Petrick and Gallagher organized a strategy and began outreach efforts to spread the trail message through marketing sponsorships with the Union Grove Kiwanis Club, Union Grove Lions Club, Inc., and created a Union Grove Rails to Trails Facebook page. They also have the full support of the Route of the Badger Trail Coalition. Recently, the State of Wisconsin allocated $1 million from the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Fund for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to purchase the 11-mile property in the state’s budget to help the Union Grove Rails to Trails cause. Plus the project received support from Racine County as well as the towns and villages on the proposed trail, including Dover, Union Grove and Sturtevant. “The work Shelley and Larissa are doing is phenomenal,” praised Willie Karidis, Route of the Badger project manager. “Through their dedicated advocacy efforts, the trail in Union Grove and Racine County will connect communities in a way that will build opportunities for business growth, healthier lifestyles, and more transportation options for residents,” Karidis continued. The moms’ investment is multifaceted. They volunteer their time because of their desire to share the outdoors with their families; moments with nature that were instilled in both at early ages. “I grew up camping with my family and loved it. Being outdoors was our entertainment and I want my kids to have the same connection with nature that I

did,” said Petrick. “There is a value to spending time together outside as a family, as well as utilizing that time to be teaching moments. My kids and I discover ecosystems on a smaller scale and then discuss how these smaller moments grow into one green earth.” Petrick continued. “Growing up, my family didn’t really have vacations per se. We spent summers at my grandmother’s farm in Iowa and made our own adventures,” said Gallagher. “Now, my family loves to bike and spend time creating new outdoor experiences together. I want to help institute a safe space for not just my family, but all Union Grove families to enjoy nature together,” Gallagher continued. Current efforts are underway to close the purchase price gap of $500,000 that exists to complete the deal. Work is being done to approach businesses, foundations and individuals who might be interested in helping monetarily to see the trail come to fruition. As the trail abuts Hwy 11, and the northern boundary of Foxconn’s new development, it was essential to determine whether the rail corridor was needed for their operations. Fortunately it was not and Foxconn executives are supportive of the project.

Mom power can never be underestimated. Said Karidis, “Thanks to the work of people like Larissa and Shelley, they constantly remind us of the value of this project and inspire us to continue to work to help create an extended trail through Union Grove. This trail will provide a new opportunity for the communities along the trail to bike with their kids, enjoy a peaceful walk, and stimulate economic growth for a multitude of businesses. In the future it will serve as a connection point to the new Foxconn Campus for thousands of people who would rather bike or walk to work. It is a project to be proud of.” Learn more about the Route of the Badger at, https:// www.railstotrails.org/our-work/trailnation/route-ofthe-badger/ Katie Newcomb is the Co-Chair of the Economic Development/Public Relations Work Group of the Route of the Badger Willie Karidis is the Manager of the Route of the Badger Project for Rail-to-Trails Conservancy

29th Annual Trek 100 Ride for Hope Saturday, June 9th, 2018 by Dave Schlabowske

W

ith all the incredible food offered up at the start, rest stops and finish party, I might have actually gained weight riding 100 miles at last year’s Trek 100. Pancake breakfast at the start? Sure, I’ll take a short stack. What, Famous Dave’s BBQ wings and bread pudding at this rest stop? I’ll just have a taste. Seriously, who can say no to wood fired pizza at the next stop? Just one slice for me though, I need to save room for the pulled pork back at the finish! And those are just some of the epicurean highlights I tasted. There were also Cousins sub sandwiches, Starbucks frappuccinos, Sassy Cow Ice Cream, Girl Scouts cookies, donuts, and ample standard rest stop fare, like Bonk Breakers bars, Honey Stinger gels and chews, and fruit. So my advice is to skip the usual carbo loading the day before a long ride and come to the Trek 100 hungry. Not only do our pals at Trek pull out all the stops on food, they bring in some real star power. Last year Brett Favre and Bo Jackson did the ride! Bo, the only man to make the Major League Baseball All-Star Team and to play in the NFL’s Pro Bowl, was so busy accommodating fans with selfies, I’m surprised he got out of the parking lot at Trek’s Waterloo headquarters. This year Trek Bicycle Corporation and the MACC Fund are hosting the 29th Annual Trek 100 Ride for Hope on Saturday, June 9th, 2018. Proceeds from the ride support research critical to finding a cure for pediatric cancer and related blood disorders. Since 1990, the Trek 100 has contributed over $13.8 million to support that research. Once again, the ride begins and ends at the home of Trek in Waterloo. Located in beautiful Jefferson County, the 100, 62, 36, or 19-mile routes will take you through the scenic low-traffic, paved town roads Wisconsin is famous for. No matter which route you choose, with every pedal stroke you provide the gift of hope to kids suffering from cancer. The early entry fee for the Trek 100 is $45 per rider and includes a 2018 Trek 100 T-shirt, the pre-ride breakfast, snacks along the routes, and post-ride festivities. In addition to the registration fee, all riders must raise at least two dollars for each mile they pledge to ride. Fundraising which exceeds your minimum requirement may make you eligible to win great Trek 100 gear and bikes! A great ride, with great food, hosted by a great company for a great cause. Why wouldn’t you sign up?

OUR FIGHT FOR YOU IN MADISON by Dave Cieslewicz

54

The two-year legislative session wraps up at the end of March. Then legislators go back to their districts to campaign for reelection. In November, all 99 State Assembly seats and half of the 33 State Senate seats as well as the governor’s office will be up for grabs. As of this writing in February here is a brief update on the good, the bad, and the still to be decided issues related to cycling. More Money for Local Roads The biggest legislative victory of this session for us was an eight percent increase in funding for local road repair. This is money to fix the roads we ride on – the city streets, town roads and county highways that account for the overwhelming number of cycling miles. But while it was a good start, this kind of effort will need to be sustained for many years into the future just to catch up on the repair work that has been deferred. We still need a long-term funding solution to address our decaying infrastructure. The governor did open the door to a gas tax increase, but it’s not clear that anything can be put in place before the end of the session.

Silent Sports Victory An attempt to repeal a two decades old rule (NR 44) requiring separation of silent sports users from motor sports in our state parks, forests and other lands was turned back by the Natural Resources Board in January. It won’t end attempts by ATV riders to gain access to more bike trails, but it’s a step in the right direction.

Penalties Strengthened for Moving Violations This law change (AB-201), passed last fall, increases penalties for vehicle moving violations (like the infamous right and left hooks that are the bane of so many cyclists) when they result in serious injury or death. It also requires that drivers attend remedial classes even when their violation doesn’t result in an injury. We would prefer that nobody gets slapped with these increased penalties because the violations don’t happen in the first place, but when they

do occur this law will more nearly match the punishment with the violation. This bill isn’t as strong as the full-on “vulnerable users” bill we had been pushing in previous sessions, but we can still count it as progress.

Eminent Domain Author Identified The most disappointing action this session was a provision slipped into the state budget at the eleventh hour (literally – it happened one late evening near the end of the budget process) to prohibit local governments and the state Department of Transportation from using eminent domain (sometimes described as condemnation) for bike paths, bike lanes and even sidewalks. To make matters worse the provision’s author was unidentified at the time. Since then Rep. Rob Stafsholt (R-New Richmond) has come forward as the sponsor of that amendment. While he initially indicated that he would be willing to work on legislation to soften his language, he has not signed off on a specific proposal. We will work to reverse this law in the next session.

Modernizing E-Bike Laws In coordination with the bicycle industry we’re working to update Wisconsin’s laws regarding electric bikes to bring them into line with current technology and national standards. This bipartisan legislation would mirror laws passed in at least five other states. It sets up categories of e-bikes and regulates how and where they may be used.

Drunk-Driving Laws Toughened When impaired drivers take to the road it’s people who bike and walk who are the most vulnerable because they lack the protections of tons of glass and steal. So, the Bike Fed has been supportive of efforts to strengthen Wisconsin’s notoriously weak drunk driving laws. We have been pleased to have the chance to support bills increasing the instances in which breathalyzer interlock devices must be used and which increase the minimum prison time for those who kill others as a result of driving drunk. The interlock bill (AB-98) was signed into law late last year. We hope that the minimum sentence bill (AB-97) will pass before the end of the session. WisconsinBikeFed.org 55

Focusing on Distracted Driving A growing threat to people who bike and walk are drivers who, while they might not be using substances, just aren’t paying attention. Current law prohibits drivers from texting while driving, but it doesn’t prevent them from doing many of the other myriad things we can do with a cell phone these days. So, we’re supporting legislation (AB-463), which expands the definition and increases penalties for distracted driving. The bill is moving through the process and we think it has a good chance of becoming law.

Lights on Trails As global warming reduces chances for snowmobilers and cross-country skiers to enjoy their sports, it is bikes that may come to the rescue for Wisconsin’s tourism industry. The fat bike phenomenon continues to grow but it has also set up some conflicts, especially with snowmobilers. So, the Bike Fed is supporting common sense legislation (AB-668) requiring cyclists to have front and rear lights when biking in the dark on certain multi-use trails.

Calendar Year Trail Passes When you buy a state trail pass do you ever wonder why it expires on December 31st no matter when you purchase it? So do we. We’re supporting legislation (AB624) that would make your trail pass last for 12 months from the day you buy it. It’s just common sense and we hope it will increase sales of passes to support our great trail system. 56

Studying Automated Vehicles The governor has appointed a committee to study the impacts of automated vehicles or “self-driving cars.” That technology is coming on fast and while it has great potential to reduce crashes involving cyclists and pedestrians, even the industry acknowledges that bicycles are the biggest challenge for their systems to detect. So, we’re monitoring that committee’s work closely. A report is expected this summer. All-in-all, other than the blow of the eminent domain prohibition, this has been a modestly good session for cycling advocacy amid a pretty tough environment. Your responses to our email action alerts have played a big role in that success. Thank you! Since our print deadlines require that this article be completed well in advance and because a lot happens fast toward the end of the session, please check in on the Bike Fed’s website to get the latest news on bills that were still in process at this writing.
